Turn the volume down — way, way down — during games and practices, and special teams coordinator Chris “Demo” Demarest resembles Billy Martin or Lou Piniella arguing a missed call. There’s stomping, arm-flapping and dirt-kicking.
Beyond the madness, there is a mad genius, and former Warriors Brenden Daley and Charles Clay credit their current NFL employment in part to the Demo-strations.
Of his first weekend with the Atlanta Falcons, Daley said: “Coach Demo and his teaching style made it a nice transition.”Daley said the Falcons’ meetings were not as “intense as coach Demo’s meetings.”
Daley and Clay said their work on UH’s special teams improved their pro stock. Daley said the Falcons and Warriors use similar punt formations.
“The terminology they use I’ve seen before with coach Demo,” Daley said. “I already have a leg up.”
Today is the first day Daley will train with the Atlanta veterans. Of the nearby activities, Daley said: “You can chew gum, I guess, because Wrigley’s is right next to us.”
The Wrigley Manufacturing Company, like the Falcons’ training facility, is located in Flowery Branch, Ga.

likewise, I don’t remember my 21st birthday, but I remember my 24th birthday as I was running up and down the LIVE FIRE rifle range at Fort Ord, CA putting my squad through “leap-frogging” technique used by the US Army.

Congratulations for Mr. Daley and Mr. Clay! I hope you both make your team’s final roster. While we are on this subject. Mr. Clay has impressive numbers at the Pro Day which impressed the scouts. While listening to ESPN1420, a commercial with Mr. Clay’s voice said that he trained with “so and so”, improve his vertical jumping and improve his 40 yd dash speed, etc. for the Pro-Day… Why can’t these kind of improvements showed up while they were playing at UH? It might have helped each player made one or more plays per game and UH might have won more games.

I am pleased by Ferd Lewis’s Star-Advertiser story today on UH President candidate David Lassner’s view on the role UH athletics. Well worth reading.
Dick Tomey almost ran for Lt Gov with Mufi – residency issues precluded that. Although a Lt Gov doesn’t do anything, a former coach as Lt Gov would be a positive for UHAD.
Lassner does understand the importance of sports at UH for the community at large and for the student experience.
The whole selection process for UH President is shibai. As reported on the news last night, a potential candidate for the position was recommended via a letter submitted by former Gov. Cayetano. When he asked what became of his recommendation, he was told by the Regents Chair Holzman that they were understaffed and the letter “fell through the cracks.” Thus Jeanette Takamura, a local girl who taught at UH and is now a Dean at an Ivy League school was never considered.
How many friggin people at UH does it take to handle one letter?? It’s a shame that the regents do not possess the capacity to recognize qualified candidates. Too bad for UH because Ms. Takamura was easily the best professor I had while attending graduate school.
Being a dean does not mean she would be qualified to be president of a 10 campus state-wide system. I would prefer someone with experience at a public university system-level.

Concur. Because of the letter falling “through the cracks”, I would think the whole process is tainted and the Board (if they have the guts) should reopen the entire process to include Ms Takamura.
This is not an endorsement of Ms Takamura but just to ensure that the process is fair – because right now I think the whole thing smells “cover up”.
If you are touting “transparency, fairness etc”, then walk the walk.

Actually I would have liked Virginia Hinshaw to become UH President – but she did not apply.
OBACHAN….yea is all ‘shibai’ drama he he…but have to remember how political the UH is…n that letter came from a former governor…not in the same corner as the current ‘arsonist’ in power…so when u burn hole in floor…have a very many ‘cracks’ letters can fall through…

Ditto on all points, while she may be my ideal candidate, she is certainly someone that should have been considered seriously to be on short list. I am not at all impressed with the current candidates, and I am actually a little taken back that they will consider someone without a PhD or terminal degree.
It is not so much the PhD itself, but rather that every academic department is run by tenured PhDs. Many in academic quarters would consider it heresy to have a non-PhD at the helm. To place it in the context, if one were to look at the top 100 universities (both public and private) without exception, all of them have a PhD or a terminal degree at the top spot.

Whether she would have been the choice for President is not the point. It’s disturbing that a candidate with qualifications for the position was not even considered due to negligence on the part of the board. Along with the other candidates dropping out and only being left with two, including the interim, I don’t understand why they are trying to rush the decision instead of opening the search again and taking their time to try to get the right person for the job.

Maybe it’s not such a bad idea to get a president without a PhD.
In the past, UH leaders with PhDs were tenured, and then absorbed into the system — at high salaries — after they “retired” or were ousted.
UH is a business.
The key is to raise money through grants, donations and legislative appropriations, as well as set tuition so it’s high enough to pay bills but affordable enough not to see a decrease in enrollment.
ST…quick question, would you welcome with open arms and no reservations, a new writer to the sports page, with absolutely no prior sport writing experience? I am not talking whether they could do the job and transfer skill sets and experience to the endeavor–rather, would you not have any thoughts of 2nd guessing and what does that say that they (mgmt) can place most anyone in this position…?
The best candidate would have experience in both scholarship and running large complex organizations.

38..Sorry A house, not to take a tone, but this is the area where I work. The top 100 universities do not bomb out–they get better. You are talking about schools from Harvard, Stanford, boola to CAL, UTexas, UVA, Michigan, etc…..
Bad leadership, can mean very tangible ruptures in the system from falling enrollment, decline in endowment, and loss of research. Those features are not associated with the top schools.
If u.s. government stopped guaranteeing student loans tuition costs would come down and students would graduate without being so far in debt.

There was 1 player that did that, brashton satele, but he lost his sr year to injury. Money, or lack of it, is probably why its not done before the season. It would be more beneficial to get game film when they are in top shape instead of making an all-in effort for the pro day.
UH should try going without a pres for couple years. Maybe cut some losses. Bring back fujio.
A university president without a PhD would never have the support of the professors who made the commitment of time and effort, not to mention cost, to get a PhD. The president needs that support otherwise there would be no one to lead.
21 I’d also venture to guess that there isn’t much time during the season for physical improvement, as time commitments of bring a student and athlete leave little time for much else. Daley and Clay have been able to devote all their time and energy to making it to the league after graduation.
45 Your are correct in large degree, as the combine and other such test, are very specific movements and motor skills, that can be learned and refined. Thus, most folks in scouting will tell you that their is a form of ‘grade inflation”, in terms of folks who get technically efficient versus those who have more fluid movement, and utilize speed and burst in a more pragmatic way, e.g. Jerry Rice, who I hardly remember ever getting caught from behind, although he was 4.6 guy for most of his career.
i guess the military acadamies should start looking for phd’s instead of generals, admirals, etc and along that these same phd’s should be willing to serve our country’s military where they can sacrifice their lives. to say a general is not equivalent to a phd is plain bs.
i guess someone like general pete dawkins should not be considered for uh presidency because he does not have a phd. he is only a west point grad, a rhodes scholar, and retired army general, and former vice president of citigroup private bank.

I would concede that a military academy is a singular entity and example. That said, I worked with a Brigadier General who previously taught at Army, and he said that that while some could make the transfer of knowledge and skill set to a university, the management structure is entirely different. The military is highly vertical, while a typical university is very linear, with dozens of fiefdoms. So, it is not to say they couldn’t do it, it is rather, are they best suited for such a job.

sa trojan, i completed my 4 yrs of rotc and was set to go, but failed on my final physical and had to resign my commission during the nam war. when anyone tries to make the military personnel not qualified i get kinda peeved because they put their life on the line for us, gave these Phds a chance to get their education, and many died without living a full life. my friend who recently passed away was a U.S. Marine officer went to Viet Nam with 23 Lts from his class. Guess how many returned to enjoy their life??? Three (3)!!!! Those 20 men plus hundred thousands more gave their lives so we could enjoy our life. To say they not qualified is enough reason to get pissed.
Whitey this is just an academic discussion there are no wrongs and rights. And no is saying one person is a better person, just who has qualifications….

I was just reading Island Air Inc. has placed a firm order for two Bombardier Q400 Next Gen turboprop airliners and has also taken options for four additional aircraft.
I was thinking it would be nice if there was a special-themed aircraft that had the Warrior “H” logo on them like Horizon Airlines does with Washington, Washington State, Oregon, Oregon State. Even Boise State and San Diego State has is represented by a Horizon’s Q400 series.
Could be a good exposure and a way to start a business relationship between UH and Ellison.
Energy and passion is a good trait to have in a football coach as long as its kept in check during game time. Don’t want to get flagged for being too unruly by the game officials. 😉

Look at the Obama administration and our 0.1% economic growth/Bhengazhi/IRS/VA/on and on;
90% from the faculty lounge or government.

#71 AHouse: There has been lawsuits by attorneys against attorneys – deep pockets attract lawsuits.
One of the minimum requirements for president of UH was ” Education (general, special or professional): doctorate or terminal degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience.”
Terminal degree would be the last highest degree received. So if a person graduated from a university with only BA or BS, that would be a “terminal degree”. So in theory the BOR has to determine whether the applicant has an “equivalent combination of education and experience”.
So a Ph.D/Doctorate is not a condition precedent in order to apply for the job, that is, you do not have to have a Ph.D/Doctorate to apply.
However, in the world of Academia, as Boolakanaka points out, Doctors look down on someone that only has a Bachelor’s degree. Or in the Army, you don’t want a four-star general taking orders from a one-star general.
while its true the saimin at hamura’s is not as authentic as when the hamura’s ran the place…it sure beats all the zippy’s stuff.
todays dashi was excellent and the won tons were quite plump. but, its those bbq meat and chicken sticks that have really gone by the wayside. too much precooking and poor quality beef have ruined that side order dish.

#76 – let’s take it a step further. A university president with no military experience is made a general in charge of a combat division. The colonels in that division won’t have respect for the person’s knowledge of combat.
In setting a good example for students, IMHO it’s more important for a college baseball coach to have a degree than it is for a university president to have a PhD.
