Day after: Game 2

The Warriors’ defense played well, the offense did not. That, in a buckeye nutshell, summarizes the Warriors’ 38-0 loss to top-ranked Ohio State.

The Warriors return to Hawaii today, then begin preparation for Saturday’s game against UC Davis.

They also hope to receive health updates on such players as linebacker Julian Gener and tight end Tui Unga.

Defensive Effort bodes well for rest odd season. Offense was overmatched by an exceptional defense. Jury still out. Overall was proud of our TEAM.

UH didn’t shock the world by beating OSU, but they sure did shock many people by holding the Buckeyes to 17 points to begin the 4th Q. Let’s face it, the Buckeyes are extremely talented and deep. We still have a ways to go but we’re heading in the right direction.

These trips are not only about the game for me. Its the experiences before and after. After many years, I finally got to meet 3 Prong, Chawan Cut, Mad Dog 50 via A House. Can’t wait to see the photo that Mrs. A House took.

Great experience at Ohio State yesterday.
    Attendance announced at 107,000.

  4. Da Punchbowl Kid September 13, 2015 3:56 am

Thanks to you guys for representing UH fans in Ohio. I echo the sentiments of comments 1 and 2 – lots to build on. Defense wins championships. Offense needs to gel. One snap and clear.

The Lei O Mano battle axe was a very nice touch to the entrance.

Quick healing to the wounded Warriors.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

    Morning all,
I have to say I really like Urban Meyer’s responses to people asking him “Did the short week affect the team’s performance?” He responds “that’s really good excuse but that’s one that not allowed—That takes away from that team that came in here and played their tails off”

I am still so proud of the Warriors for coming here and playing tough. Trust me, many of my friends in Columbus know what a tough team Hawaii has now and they have earned much respect! I honestly think the ‘Bows have an extremely solid chance at beating Wisconsin, I really do, not to overlook UC Davis of course. I plan to watch every game I can!

One thing that I thought was great is I heard one of the OSU players tweeted that Hawaii’s Defense was #DBU… In case that doesn’t make any sense let me say this… Virginia Tech with a top rated Defense calls themselves Defensive Back University. So that OSU player is saying that Hawaii’s D was better than VT!

    PRIDE!

    Aloha everyone!

  8. Inyoface September 13, 2015 5:31 am

Defense should take the week off. Offense should be working double time. I felt they left at least 17 points on the field. Would like to see Hagger at wideout more even though he had a costly drop.

  9. H-Man September 13, 2015 5:40 am

It was bitter and sweet. The sweet is lasting a lot longer. Go Warriors !!!

  10. tom-warriornation September 13, 2015 6:35 am

Yes; we have a great defense–played like a top 10 defense–keep working hard! Harris & Davis looks great at RB. We need more creativity on offense; mis-direction, screen & flare passes, reverses–seems like we ran the same plays over and over.

  11. UHfan808 September 13, 2015 6:42 am

Happy Day After Game Day, Tsai-kos!!

    😀

  12. wow September 13, 2015 7:25 am

The offensive productivity should improve over time but the turnovers needs to be a focus for improvement.

  13. Ratmin September 13, 2015 7:26 am

Had to work yesterday so could only watch parts of the game at times. What I saw was a Hawaii team that played hard and tried to take it to the bigger boys! Like I’ve said said before we do have things to work on and it is hard to figure things out playing against the number team in the country but we showed that we are almost there. If everyone is able to stay healthy and the offense can put it together a little bit more we can seriously dominate the Mountain West.

    GO WARRIORS!!

  14. dwc13 September 13, 2015 7:44 am

Ohio State alum. I was very impressed with the all-out effort given by Hawaii players, especially the defense. Keep it up the rest of the season and good things can happen.

Not much was said about the 4,500 mile trip and 6 time zone difference for the Hawaii team, which required some major adjustments to try and overcome in a short period of time. Kudos to the Hawaii football program for being prepared to play. Other than the final score, I hope everyone that made the trip to Columbus had a very enjoyable and memorable experience. Not many college players can say they played against a team that is ranked #1, let alone the defending national champion. Perhaps 50 years from now, they’ll look back and have some great stories to tell their grandchildren.

  15. oneseason September 13, 2015 8:43 am

The UH defense holding Ohio State to 17 points through 3 complete quarters was outstanding & it was good to see the OSU post-game interviews that commented on it. In the best of all possible worlds, I could (in hindsight) see a score of UH 9 – 27 OSU. Of course, if UH had started scoring, I wouldn’t be surprised if our players started getting injured as happened to VT in the Monday game. So maybe UH 0 – 38 OSU wasn’t so bad from a season standpoint.

  16. 808warriorfan September 13, 2015 8:48 am

Former UH QB Jeff Duva was at the game. He says that the Ohio State fans were impressed w/ the UH “D”. Just hope that Gener and Unga are OK to go in a week or so …

  17. islandman September 13, 2015 8:49 am

The defense was great, but hope they can sustain it. Remember last year, the UH defense played well in the first game against Washington which won, 17-16. The defense shut out the Huskies in the second half. After that game, the UH defense had some good games and some not so good, but better than the offense.

  18. Down with... September 13, 2015 8:58 am

Great game yesterday Warriors!!! Offense was terrible but defense held it together for Team. Hope no serious injuries. Get well Gener!

  19. ArcumFortis September 13, 2015 8:59 am

What I take away from this game is that our current team has the capacity to compete with anyone. This is not saying that we can defeat anyone because we cannot and web were clearly bested by a superior team yesterday. But for three quarters we looked like a worthy opponent.

I compare our Sugar Bowl team of 2007 and its performance against Georgia with the Ohio State game yesterday. For three quarters I felt our team yesterday matched up better than the 2007 team did with the exception of offensive production. But even considering the offense I remember coming away from the 2007 game with a clear sense that Georgia was able to pressure Colt without blitzing and this alone took the 2007 offence out the game. I think it was much the same yestersday. Our 2007 offence was better against Georgia but not by any astounding margin.

So net net, I think we competed hard and the final score actually compliments Ohio State a little more than they deserve. Yes they won and won handily. But we made a decent showing against an amazingly deep and talented team. Our offense needs work. But I think they have the talent to improve and do well. It will be interesting to see what the offence can do against Davis and even more interesting to see how we play against Wisconsin and Boise. We will obviously not be favored against these latter two opponents but I feel a little better about our chances to compete with them now then I did prior to the game yesterday. So a glimmer of hope.

  20. Down with... September 13, 2015 9:05 am

Wisconsin and Boise don’t look so scary anymore if the Defense can maintain and offense get’s it together. We got haggar, Haynes, stubblefield, collie, kemp, pedroza, ungainly, barker, ursua, ewaliko, Bernard and more. One of them has to be able to break away, get open, and lastly catch the ball. We need to work on catching the ball or max needs to throw game speed in practice

  23. Bryson September 13, 2015 10:38 am

Yesterday was definetly a bittersweet day…Sweet of course because our defense played phenomenal against a offense that was supposed to be bigger, faster and stronger….Our offense however was definetly the bitter part being shut out is one thing but being shut out and not able to move the ball is a whole different story…but hope still remains I’m actually a bit more optimistic about the season we could possibly have if the offense begins to click…there’s no doubt that we won’t face a more talented team on our schedule then the one we played yesterday…

  24. Willie September 13, 2015 10:47 am

Reading Urban Meyer’s comments in the paper places blame with his team. This is disrespectful IMO to the tremendous effort that the Warrior D put in. Come on, you have freakin choke 5 star recruits and tons of HS all Americans on the roster. Sometimes you have to be humble and give props to the other side of the ball.

On another note great to see that Trevor Dacis at Cal recovered from a devastating hit last year. Had 3 catches for 138 yards yesterday. What could have been if he chose to stay.

  25. oneseason September 13, 2015 10:50 am

Tampa Bay does not have a balanced offensive attack … but still leading 21-0 in the first quarter.

  26. oneseason September 13, 2015 10:54 am

    Make that Tennessee … sorry.

  27. Maddog50 September 13, 2015 11:01 am

AHouse, Warrior Dave, three prong chawan cut, my pleasure to meet you. This was a struggle in several parts. Each and every element of this team will improve and click. Tough to do what they did and WI will be similar. I really like this team and barring season ending injury expect much improvement in all phases. Here to hoping that the home game is a homecoming of sorts somebody has got to shake the tree and put butts in the seats Saturday….well worth the price of admission!!!! Met a lot of people who tried to be nice to me from Comlombus! They don’t get it they a

Watch the replay. Any criticism will boil down to dropped passes missed interception and not aggressively going after balls thrown to you.

  31. 99club September 13, 2015 11:43 am

I’m sure several players got the attention of NFL scouts with their performances yesterday! This team is goin’ bowlin’, for sure.

  33. st. anthony trojan September 13, 2015 12:12 pm

It seemed like the Oregon offense….moved to Tennessee…35-7 first half…why does it seem that his receivers are always open n make it so easy to put points on the board…???…for this first game ne way…or is Tampa Bay just that bad ???

  34. Maddog50 September 13, 2015 12:31 pm

    meant to say Benny Fonua.

  36. Barak September 13, 2015 1:30 pm

I live on the mainland, so everything I know about training camp is second-hand but I seem to remember hearing that during drills and scrimmages the offense was performing better than the defense. What’s up with that? From what I’ve seen in the last couple games is one of the most solid UH D’s in a long time and a sputtering, out of sync O.

  37. Dale Moore September 13, 2015 2:29 pm

Good luckI don’t usually post on blogs of fans from other teams, but I was enamored with my team (Ohio State) playing Hawaii. I mean it’s not every day the Buckeyes get to play a team from so far away and from such a beautiful place. And of course, my hats off to your teams performance! My buddy and I were sitting in my house, drinking some beers, as we do every Saturday while the Buckeyes play, and wondering; why does the Buckeyes offense look so flat?!! I think it took me until the 2nd quarter to realize- Hawaii’s “D” wasn’t intimidated and they were in Beast-Mode the whole game! Props! I won’t sit here and patronize your fanbase by heaping congratulatory niceties about moral victories because your team is far above that! Good luck on the rest of the season. And, like I remarked to my buddy –while it does suck when your team loses, at least you guys get to go back home to beautiful Hawaii!! Lol!

Lol I see that you corrected yourself so you meant that Tampa Bay does not have a balanced offensive attack but the Tennessee Titans do and leading by a score of 21-0 in the first quarter.

    Maddog50:

most memorable items of this road trip:

    1) meeting Maddog50

    2) seeing the Ohio State alumnae marching band that occupied the entire 60 yards of the playing field – students have not yet started classes.

    3) visiting Hollywood Casino – smoke free except for a small section in the back of the casino – collected by $1 and $5 chips for our collection.

    4) seeing Jeff Duva and Mike Biscotti at the tailgate

    5) met 5 former players from the 1969 – 1971 teams

  41. NYUH September 13, 2015 3:03 pm

Likewise we have to give a lot of credit to Ohio State’s defense. The spread has allows had difficulties against great athletes.

oldtimer808 … I meant to write “Tennessee does not have a balanced offensive attack … but still leading 21-0 in the first quarter.”

It was supposed to be a dig at UH’s add that folks should buy football tickets to see UH’s “hard hitting defense” (100% agree) and “balanced offensive attack”. Marcus’ passing resulted in 14 points for Tennessee and their defense had a pick 6. So Tennessee had an effective offense, and it really doesn’t matter whether it is balanced or not … as long as it manages to be effective.

Despite my snarkyness, if Chow’s “balanced offensive attack” gets the Rainbow Warriors to a bowl game, I will happily join a cheer for “Balanced” and “Offense” back and forth between the Mauka and Makai sides of Aloha Stadium. 🙂

Colorado’s 48-14 win at home against UMass was a relief.

Tomorrow, on the revamped “Herd”, Colin will, predictably, find something negative to say about Marcus Mariota.

Take the sack, Eli. Everytime I see a coach calling a passing play when the objective should be to run out the clock, I keep returning to Provo in 1993.
