UH lands California QB

Corey Nielsen, who led California High School quarterbacks in passing last season, today accepted a scholarship offer from UH.

Nielsen, of Gahr High School, threw for 4,363 yards and 35 touchcdowns last season.

“Hawai‘i feels like home,” Nielsen said. “I’m so happy to be a Warrior.”

UH is hoping to sign two quarterbacks for the 2009 recruiting class.

And here are two photos taken by Corey’s uncle, Jon Nielsen:

Greg McMackin is attending the ESPYs tonight in Los Angeles. He’ll be back in town tomorrow.

Anita Manuma has requested — and received — a release from her softball scholarship at Tennessee. She said she plans to transfer to UH. Here’s Manuma with her pal, UH defensive end John Fonoti (she’s standing on a platform; she’s not really 9 feet tall):

The Class of 2005 included Colt Brennan, Davone Bess, Dan Kelly, Blaze Soares, Adam Leonard, Solomon Elimimian, etc. Here are three other key members of the ’05 Class — linebacker Brashton Satele, defensive tackle Rocky Savaiigaea and John Fonoti:

Soon after this picture was taken, Savaiigaea called Princess Leila, begging her to resume shooting videos. Every day, people from UH — players, coaches, head coaches and administrators — keep asking me about Princess Leila’s return.

There was a large turnout for yesterday’s Skills Camp for quarterbacks, receivers, running backs, linebackers and defensive backs. The session ended with Brad Kalilimoku teaching the campers the ha‘a that he co-created.

That guy in the floppy hat is former UH safety Leonard Peters (now with the Chicago Bears). Word on the street is that Peters will appear in a print ad for a clothing company in a fall issue of ESPN the Magazine.

These camps become a yearbook-come-to-life. Here’s former UH cornerback Al Hunter, who owns a business and is a father of two (and soon to be three):

    Carryover from previous post….

I happen to read the Mark Takai June/July newsletter that he sends out to the residents in his area. He has set up a town meeting that most of us might be interested since guests speakers will be Jim Donovan and Coach Mack.

    Wednesday July 30
    Waimalu Elem School
    7:00pm – 8:30pm

  11. Mike July 16, 2008 8:05 am

no im not… sorry i confused everyone.

Hmm, LoCal in Tustin or Koreatown in LA, LoCal or Koreatown…hmm…

I guess I better go see my sister since she’s only in town until tomorrow.

  13. (Jesse) James July 16, 2008 8:07 am

    Good morning Tsaikos….

Didn’t Manuma have some issues with the Tenessee program after their run in the softball world series after they played UH???

Stretch – agreed about the turnout. That, along with the camp they had on Sunday with coach Mack et al. that drew over 400 kids only helps to solidify support for UH Football. I only see the trend continuing. To me, it gives the kids a connection to UH establishing future fans at least and possibly gaining future players. When I was in 7th and 8th grade, Coach Tomey held weeklong football camps complete with meals and schedules similar to what the players did, workouts, weight training, watching films, etc. Those were good times and I felt really connected to UH after that (although I was already a fan).

1 The third room. Lions that haven’t eaten in three years are dead. That one was easy, right?

also listed Pilares still as a RB, and Libre at WR

    ST – 2 questions:

Is the clothing company ad Peters will be a certain new sponsor of UH uniforms?

Will Manuma be under scholarship at UH and/or will she have any eligibility to play? (she was an incredible talent in youth/high school leagues!)

  24. gigi-hawaii © July 16, 2008 8:22 am

I’ll be amazed if Graunke doesn’t start. He is battle tested and scored during the Sugar Bowl. Need I say more?

  25. gigi-hawaii © July 16, 2008 8:24 am

Well, Tom, I guess you’re right. Yenta is not a flattering name to be called. haha

I downloaded the eo na toa music tracks to play during certain game situations. One of the best new features of the game in my opinion.

  27. tom mui July 16, 2008 8:28 am

GIGI:Lois reminded me that Yenta was the name of the Matchmaker in Fiddler on the Roof

  28. Mike July 16, 2008 8:30 am

J-Dog, no doubt one of the better new features in the game.. i plan to do the same. also like the new “ice the kicker” feature.

  29. gigi-hawaii © July 16, 2008 8:30 am

OK, Tom, I sort of remembered that too. I watched Fiddler on the Roof several times. Yenta was Barbra Streisand’s matchmaker.

If you have a chance, you should come out to the practices. You will learn a lot watching these guys. Funaki has been throwing really well. Graunke has been doing pretty well also. I think that Funaki has the edge right now. It will be an interesting camp coming up.

  35. chawan_cut July 16, 2008 8:49 am

Not trying to be lame here, and I’m just echoing the sentiments of the rest of the readers, players, fans, etc. We all miss THE Princess’ videos as well as the other videos from the other camera wielders. But I think this whole thing is bigger than THE Princess and her videos. I believe it affects all of the Advertiser.
We here on ST’s blog are a big voice, and we can make a difference I believe. Is there anyone we can write to, call, make our voices heard? This is getting ridiculous.
For some people common sense makes no sense.

ST ~ Can you ask Leila to shoot stuff just for our exclusive viewing? Just because HA won’t use her work, we would certainly welcome it on Stevem’s site for Tsaiko only distribution.

  50. SteveM July 16, 2008 9:29 am

Read the HA story: Gannett second quarter profit falls by 36 percent.

This period covers the intrusion of this blog bloatware and subsequent problems…but I know I can’t judge things by the Honolulu Advertiser alone… unless the implementation was system-wide….naaah. ❓

In this little corner of the Gannet empire, loss of readers and advertising revenue on the ON-LINE portion can’t have that much effect. But for sure, HA certainly didn’t help itself in this arena. Advice: Cut expenses by dumping things that don’t work and boost sales by paying the people that cover the news and produce the stories and video.

  51. J July 16, 2008 9:33 am

    Kekoa:

ST ~ Can you ask Leila to shoot stuff just for our exclusive viewing? Just because HA won’t use her work, we would certainly welcome it on Stevem’s site for Tsaiko only distribution.

That’s asking her to work for free. She’s a professional, even if the HA doesn’t consider her to be for accounting purposes. If she volunteered on her own, that’s one thing…But if ST asks, that’s almost a guilt trip by one of her elders.

  52. addahknowjoe July 16, 2008 9:34 am

ST- When and where is WAC Media day? You going?

  53. Mike July 16, 2008 9:44 am

    SteveM,

You should see the company’s latest “offer.” It’s clear they have no intention of resolving our contract situation and are instead trying to force a fight that will allow them to try and break our union. The Princess and our other volunteer videographers deserve all the support they can get for standing up for our union workers with their ongoing video strike. It’s too bad our negotiator, who went on vacation during all of this, hasn’t shown the same commitment.

Mike (the brother, not the lurker)

Gannett is making moolah, something like 17 percent profit, right? What does Bank of Hawai‘i do, something like 7 percent?

nice pick up today. we all know that anyone with that kind of stats whether he is a system qb or not got to have some talent right.
oh. its a four side system that he plays in, yeah very similar to the warrior offense.

    here’s some stuff from scout.com

As a junior at Cerritos (Calif.) Gahr, Nielsen led California in passing and was second in the nation in passing after throwing for 4,363 yards and 35 touchdown passes to five interceptions. Had a 65% completion percentage. Had five games where he threw for over 400 yards including a 453 yard, six touchdown game in the opener. Was the San Gabriel Valley League MVP in leading Gahr to a 10-3 record and the CIF-SS Western Division semifinals.

two qb’s to recruit? will a local qb decommit and stay home???

kkv2000 ~ Yep!… No practice today, but if you want a glimpse of the future, plan a day to check out the Speed & Quickness next week in the morning, and hang around town to watch the afternoon practice with the UH guys.

I’ll try to confirm some times for you. leave me your email addy at kekoa22 (at) aol (dot) com.

Man-O-man did you miss a blog bash to remember! I know you lurk, but this one you had to feel for freshness Doc. Your old pal ‘BG’ was one of the organizers of this gig. Your ears must have been ringing, ’cause we talked about you and the RSN!

I wonder if Steele Jantz will get a scholie also?? Right now he is paying his own way. If he does, then NEXT year, it is possible to have 7 QB’s on scholarship – Funaki, Kepo’o (??), Alexander, Raush, Jantz, Nielsen and the other QB they are looking for. That’s a lot!!

  113. Jason July 16, 2008 11:47 am

I watched some of Nielsen’s highlights on YouTube. He is accurate, has a quick release, and reminds me a lot of Colt in his ability to improv when the play breaks down. He’s obviously a great athlete (they sometimes run a spread option), and can move around in the pocket very well. The system has similarities to UH, although they flank out the RB more, sometimes motioning him to the backfield. He needs to strengthen his core, though. When his feet aren’t set, he doesn’t get as much as I’d like into his throws. But when his mechanics are good, he has good zip, although he can put touch on the throw when he needs to. I definitely think he has the potential to come in and contribute after a redshirt year. Strengthen that core, hopefully grow an inch or two, while adapting to Ron Lee’s R&S. I think UH got a good one.

  114. Da Menehune July 16, 2008 11:50 am

    Nielsen’s middle name is Masaru.

In light of the discussion concerning Princess Leila’s videos and how to get them back on-line while making sure she’s paid for her work, here’s a post from yesterday updated to reflect this situation

HOW TO RAISE MONEY FOR FUN AND UH ATHLETICS

Some people here on the blog are vaguely aware that my work with a non-profit focuses on sustainability/environmental/energy issues, but not very many folks know that the non-profit itself is supported in part by RECYCLING FOR CHANGE which provides a wide range of services & products to businesses, families, educational institutions, and other non-profits including planning community environmental projects and recycling drives.

Earlier this spring, shortly after Jim Donovan came on board, RFC gave him information about the loss of revenue to the Athletic Department by not providing recycling bins at the Stan Sheriff Center, Les Murakami Stadium, the Women’s Softball Stadium, and in the Athletic Department Complex itself. In not redeeming the containers, the Department has lost an estimated $30 – $35,000 in HI-5 fees since January, 2005, when the law went into effect.

We Tsaikos might also consider using the HI-5 redemption program to generate financial support for the Athletic Department as well as for underwriting the costs of our own in-house communications. Would it be worth our time & energy? Yes, a very definite emphatic YES!!

Using the most conservative figures generated by the Department of Health, 800,000,000 HI-5 containers are sold each year.- that’s eight hundred million. Of the total sold, slightly under 70% are redeemed. If we were to collect and redeem one-tenth of one percent of the remainder – 800,000 – we could generate $40,000 a year in gross revenues.

Several schools have raised an average of $20,000 a year each for their Project Graduation programs just by holding on-campus drop-off drives once or twice a month. Other community groups offer pickup services from local businesses & households as well as drop-offs and bring in two to five times as much cash. Still others run all kinds of metal and plastic recycling drives.

In fact, there are all kinds of options and alternatives to explore. No matter how limited we start off with, IF we Tsaikos were to set up a basic no-frills all-volunteer recycling program, we would then be able to help underwrite & support everything from meals for the teams on game/match days to awards for winning WAC championships to speed & quickness camp expenses to supporting Doris Sullivan’s work with PIAA to paying Princess Leila for her videography.

Furthermore, the Tsaiko recycling program could be a state-wide initiative – it’s a state-wide law – so not only will we be supporting our UH athletic teams but also we’d be helping to keep Hawai`i free from litter. Definitely a win-win for everyone.

If there is any interest in exploring recycling as a way for Tsaikos to raise money, please send an e-mail to info at waa-hawaii dot org or info at recycling4change dot com. NOTE: We’re still de-bugging the second address, but it should be fixed by the end of the week.

For instance, if me and all my friends (including Tsaikos) commit to drinking at least a case a week of whatever beer they want us to drink, how much more in matching $$$ are they willing to give to UH Athletics? Then we recycle all the cans/bottles and give even more $$$! We’ll have those away charter flights paid for in no time.

I have a question about the HI-5 law. Why did they make the law structured so that the recycling companies do not have to pay for the scrap value of the aluminum cans? With the aluminum price at around $1.30 per pound, there is a lot of money going to those companies while we are essentially getting back our own money in the form of the deposit we paid up front. Just wondering…

The HI-5 redemption law assesses a 6 cent fee on plastic, glass & aluminum beverage containers up to two liters in size of which 5 cents is redeemable – until such time as at least 70% of all eligible cans & bottles have been redeemed during a single calendar year when the additional penny will no longer be charged starting the next fiscal year.

No fees are assessed on other kinds of aluminum, plastic, glass & metal, and they can be recycled at various locations. For example, one of our boardmembers owns an engineering firm with contracts to replace wiring in buildings. Since there’s currently no requirement to recycle copper wiring, he makes arrangements for us to pick it up and take it to one of the recyclers – and, yes, we provide documentation as to the ownership.

The law is to encourage consumers to recycle beverage containers made of glass, plastic & aluminum to reduce litter and the need for additional landfills. In fact, one of the biggest opponents to beverage container recycling early on – in fact, for nearly 30 years here in Hawai`i – was the City & County since they’ve picked out all kinds of metal for decades to sell to scrap dealers. Even now, they probably sell maybe 500,000 lbs or more of metal every month to recyclers.

If you have sufficient quantity – off-hand, I don’t know what that threshold figure is – you can negotiate a deal with the recyclers to pay by the pound.

Anyhow, please visit the website and then contact me directly for more information. Some people don’t like this blog being used to discuss non-sports or non-Tsaiko-related issues.

Back on line…lost my server yesterday late afternoon. Hi Everybody!!

    ST –

Sorry to hear that your dear sister is in the hospital. Best wishes from all of us for her speedy and complete recovery.

    Corey Nielsen –

I’m sure you have given much thought re whether or not to accept a scholarship to play at UH. Trust me, my fine young friend, you will not regret it…the love and support you will receive from the Hawaii Ohana is second to NONE!

    Anita Manuma –

Mahalo for making the decision to transfer to UH. John Fonoti and the rest of the State welcome you back with open arms.

    KKV2000 –

All the way from Kahuku just to view a workout!?…and with gas prices what they are today…Mahalo for your support. Hope to get your autograph some day soon.

    HawaiianBod –

So glad to see you posting again. I’m so happy that you’re feeling well enough to do so. Continue to take good care now…

Blackie / Curveball / Jack Flash / Kaimuki Kid / Mike (the poster) –

Hope to get your autographs soon, also. Jack Flash, sorry I missed meeting you at the blog bash. Glad that you won a nice door prize.

    ICYUL8 –

Your graveyard shift is TOUGH, but you’re still young, strong and can take it! Be extra careful driving home at that early hour.

    Brie –

How’s your research coming. Sorry I can’t be of much help to you. Like Kekoa, I, too, would love to read your completed thesis.

    Mike (the writer) –

Hi Mike! Since a second “Mike” has started to post, would you consider modifying your moniker to “Mike-T” or “Mighty Mike” or “MrMike”. Just some suggestions. Sorry, I should mind my own business.

    W-Doc –

You are the epitome of the Energizer Bunny…always on the go! Thanks very much for your continuous efforts to keep Tsaikos apprised of ways to support worthy causes.

Liz & homey: Doris is satisfied with the quality and functionality of the inkjet for now. We reminded her that Tsaikos are ready and willing to help out, just have to let us know. So Doris, if you’re reading this, would a laser printer be better?
If you haven’t seen the work that Doris does, go to her site.

Day 2 — spray paint the eaves white

Day 3 — paint the body of the house beige

Day 4 — paint the trimming

Day 5 — paint the doors

Does anyone know any higher-ups at the local Anheuser-Busch offices? We should get them to include more variety of beers for us to drink (for our Warriors.) More money too!
    ___________________________________________________________

Only one with a mind as great as Jack Flash could find a way to “drink” UH into chartered flights. What an unselfish Warrior loving guy. Have another for me, Mr. Flash! SOCIAL!!!! 😆

Mrs. A-House thanks for the concerns. But the funny thing is I drive cars, trucks, suvs etc. etc. all day long. So I don’t think driving for me is an issue I think the people driving on the road besides me are the trouble that early in the morning. To many drunk drivers nowadays thinking they can drive home after having a few at the clubs & bars. I think Hawai’i is ranked #3 in casualties from anytime of accidents. Understanding that most drivers are cautious and drive with the spirit of “ALOHA” you still got those few that drive a little to “HANG LOOSE”!!!

Paper newspapers will be gone – except for MidWeek & Honolulu Weekly types – long before 2020. With reader-generated stories and blogs, there really isn’t much reason to keep a lot of journalists on staff except for key departments such as politics and sports.

However, what will continue to happen is that instead of having separate beats for City Hall, the Legislature, the courts & state government, they will be combined into one government unit with reporting staff reduced by at least a third.

Same thing with sports – with over a dozen reporters, their beats will be consolidated and the staff gradually reduced by a third or more over time.

The other way that the HA management will continue to reduce expenses will be to nudge highly-experienced and very expensive – thanks to union contracts – reporters out the door and then hire fresh-out-of-J-School replacements for way, way less money. These young’uns may be good writers from a technical perspective, but they don’t have the knowledge, experience & contacts that their professional elders do.

Every year from here on out, there’ll be another purge. By 2013, I predict that the HA staff will be down to around 275 people and a decade from now about 150. What say thee?

They are not obligated to pay us for the value of the scrap. I think that we should get some kind of value besides the deposit that comes out of our pockets to begin with…. Jus thinking

Prior to the recycling law that was put into effect, the scrap dealers were paying out for aluminum cans and such. It is no different now, except that we have that law. They still had to pay their workers and the trucks, besides I believe that they get a penny for every can they process, that is why we pay 6 cents and get back 5 cents…

KK — I guess if recyclers didn’t find it “lucrative,” there would be no recyclers. Too much humbug.

Hubby likes to take his cans and bottles to the place on Dillingham. They don’t measure and they don’t count. They take your word for it and we usually get about $18-20 for quite a few large bags.

  296. Rob25 July 16, 2008 4:15 pm

    Hi Esme,

Yep, looks like we’re still here, but 54 of our colleagues are now out of a paycheck. And it shouldn’t surprise anyone if this is just the first round of cuts. This is a lousy, lousy day for our paper, regardless of how some idiot designer and interns are acting.

  298. Rob25 July 16, 2008 4:17 pm

  299. Monkey Face July 16, 2008 4:20 pm

I heard dat da coaching staff from Hawaii go offer scholarship to two guys who only goin be juniors. One guy name Stevenson from Mililani and one guy name Fehoko from Farrington. Gee how come li’dat. Da last coaching staff no even offer da scholarship ’til one week befoa gotta sign, and now da new coaching staff offer scholarship 20 months befoa da signing date. Two or three moa years we goin be like USC wea we get 12 to 15 guys go commit already befoa da summa of dea senior season.

  303. Mike July 16, 2008 4:30 pm

    Hi Gigi,

I’ve stopped teaching journalism. I’m sticking to English, where at least the low-paying jobs are secure from outlandish corporate greed.

  304. PIAA DS July 16, 2008 4:39 pm

Billy Ray and Corey are becoming fast friends. I introduced them yesterday and they spoke for a few minutes. Today they were exchanging numbers and hanging out. Billy Ray said if Taz would commit he thinks it would be a lot of fun being on the field with him.

All in all a good camp. Today the kids were working really hard but at the end of the day all said they had fun. Nice to see more offers came out of it. I told the coaches not to forget to save some for next week. Cant have all the best skill players and not have anyone to block for them! ha!

UH invited me to speak each morning, about 200 of the participants came in early for my discussion on NCAA rules, recruiting, etc, which Ill be doing each morning from 8:00 till 8:45 in the lecture hall. They asked very good questions as well. Mack asked me to come out and speak with the parents as well afterwards. If any of you are hanging out (myki and sjmacro? ) feel free to come in for the session, good information to be able to pass on. I saw BarryM shooting pics all around me (not necessarily from my ‘better’ side, you post those, Ill have my son drop a bomb on your house from 25,000 feet!! hahahaha)

Thanks Al for all your help and myki and skmacro for the ink cartridges!!! That should last me 5-6 months!! You tsikotic tsaikos are great!

On a sadder note, one of my sons school mates from Damien, one year behind him, died in Afganistan on Sunday. Jon Brostrom, only 24 years old. Really nice young man, UH Grad. Lets all pray for him and pray there is an end to this war soon.

  305. da princess' classmate July 16, 2008 4:41 pm

  310. PIAA DS July 16, 2008 4:46 pm

I forgot to mention, the two offers out of today’s camp (not at the camp but afterwards) were Conrad Scheidt of Kamehameha and Taz. VJ came yesterday evening.

Profles are up on the PIAA including Corey on the QB page (taz isnt up but he’s on the recruiting sheet..and Taz has academics!) Taz can be found on our News page.

Putting things in perspective…I sit here getting excited about all the news regarding our UH football recruits and how we’re eagerly awaiting the “war” in the Swamp, when young men and women of college football age are in the frontline fighting the “real” war. How you gonna act?

  322. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc July 16, 2008 5:23 pm

    Kaimuki Kid – #266

Again, the law is designed to reduce solid waste by encouraging everyone to turn their glass, plastic & aluminum beverage containers in and get five cents back. Its purpose is not to provide a source of $$$ independent of the HI-5 fee.

If people don’t want to bother returning their containers, then they can put all three types in their garbage for the City to sell after the garbage is sorted. People can also donate the containers by dropping them into one of the white bins at a nearby putlic school if you don’t want to wait for a collection drive. Some non-profits offer pick up services.

Unfortunately, a lot of people toss containers out of their car windows rather than disposing of them properly. However, that litter – if we see it – gets picked up and transformed into money we didn’t pay out.

If you feel strongly about your position, then I suggest that you contact the chairs of the State Senate and State House Environment Committees who would handle the legislation and ask them to draft legislation to address your concerns.

That’s the first step down a very long road, but it’s the most important one. Even if there are no hassles at any step along the way, it could take up to 18 months for everything to be put into place. For example, Cayetano signed the HI-5 bill in June, 2002, but wholesalers and retailers didn’t start charging the fee until November, 2004, because it took that long to develop the policies and procedures under a new governor who opposed the concept. The redemption part of the law didn’t begin until Jan. 1, 2005.

When war touches someone we know, we stop, pray and say there but for the grace of God, go I.
When I was 24, I was an Army Sgt. I just missed Vietnam, two years later and I would have been in the middle of it as some of you were.

It was great meeting all the names at LoCal CC today. Great food and Shave ice cream really made me feel like a native.
Fresno and Boise are in my mind now after sitting next to Ronnie

  324. Rob25 July 16, 2008 5:32 pm

Al – My hubby was a Marine and is now AD with the Hawaii National Guard. When he left for DS/DS he was stationed at Kaneohe. After he came back we were still living at K Bay but he was with Marine Barracks until they sent us to Okinawa for 4.5 years. He got out and we came home and now he is again full time with the National Guard.

Now our oldest is following in Dad’s footsteps, but hopefully not to Iraq or Afghanistan…but he is ready and willing to serve and die for this country if need be. Have to take our hats off to people who feel the call to sacrifice like that.

Lay-offs that may or may not be part of a hardball management stance in HA negotiations.
Helping hands for PIAA followed by news of a fallen hero.
Ailing Tsaiko family members and then video of that wonderful Miyazawa kid on the South Lawn of the White House.

Like you said, Hoohiki, “How you gonna act?”

  338. Brie (: July 16, 2008 6:58 pm

    Alojah again,

Sorry for such a late response !

Thank you for the information about the ILH/OIA split.
I haven’t been able to find ANYTHING on the internet, but I haven’t really gone and interviewed anyone yet about it.
Your information has helped me greatly so far (:

    Long Time UH Fan-
Thank you; I’m planning on going to the Archives/Library/AD’s later on when I develop my project a little further.

    SteveM-
Thank you very much for your suggestion ! My mom had read your post two nights ago and told me the other morning; she also said that he would be a good person to interview.

    Kekoa-
Ooh, I think I remember my mom saying something about Wes Nakama. I think I will email him in a little bit when my project is a little more detailed.
But at Maryknoll we need a CWC (disciplinary works from all four years to show improvement) and a Senior Project. The senior project is supposed to be a year long process in which seniors can do something that benefits the community and shows Maryknoll values. The project is supposed to resemble what students would be going through in college. Students can pick their own topics and have to research it on their own. Since we live in Hawai’i there’s always very interesting topics; this past year two former seniors chose to work together in theirs. One student chose pig hunting and the other chose making kalua pig in a traditional hawaiian imu.
During my freshman year I qualified for States in Cross- Country. PAC-5 girls varsity had won first place for team scores in the ILH Championships and we had all qualified individually but since we were a compiled team we cannot run under PAC-5 at States, we all had to run under our own school name and stripped of our top seed in lane selections for the race. We were booted all the way down to last because we did not have at least 5 girls from one school. So for mine I am trying to change the HHSAA rule that any compiled team will be allowed to run as a single team in the state championships.

Thank you for the compliment (: I’ll try my best.
    Haha.

  339. Pauoa Boy July 16, 2008 7:00 pm

    Howzit Gang,
Just got back from ordering my youngest boys birthday cake for tommorrow, so gotta catch up…

Aunty Rob25 – Good luck to your son, MP is one of those demanding jobs that the Marine Corps loves to send all over. As a Marine and parent I understand the fear of your loved one having to go into harms way, etc… Call us crazy but all Marines have that pride instilled in them, that if called to duty regardless of situation will be more than willing to go. I know as with most of you we all wish there was no war and it would end, but unless you were ever overseas you would never understand that we cannot leave the job undone! I don’t want to get into a debate over this but I can assure you our job does not include oil and lowering your gas prices…it goes far beyond that! Anyway, hopefully I’ll run into your son someday, and he can get stationed close to home…

  340. Pauoa Boy July 16, 2008 7:02 pm

    Howzit Brie,
Sorry I made you guys leave Genji’s early the other night, I didn’t mean to make your ears bleed…it was the uh alchohol I promise 🙂

  341. Pauoa Boy July 16, 2008 7:04 pm

Also prayers to all who need it…we all know it’s never too late…

  342. Mrs. A-House July 16, 2008 7:10 pm

    Pauoa Boy –

Hi there, my boy – hope you got your posters from Ronnie at the CC. Isn’t she one of cutest, friendliest ladies you have ever met. Wait til you meet Rob25. She…yes I said she…is also one of the sweetest ladies with a million dollar smile. Give your little one a big hug and kiss from his “hanai grandma?” and wish him a HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

  343. Mrs. A-House July 16, 2008 7:19 pm

    ST –

I am just sick to my stomach about the 54 HA employees being laid off without ANY advance notice. How can “they” treat loyal employees with such disrespect!! If an employee has to give at least two-weeks’ notice, why can’t the same courtesy be extended by management?!! I’m really dismayed and disappointed…no class.

  344. PIAA DS July 16, 2008 7:22 pm

Ill be going to my sons graduation from flight school. He has been given the option of becoming a flight instructor or going to F-16 or F-22 training, as he’s been training on the T-38 fighter. I told him I want him to be a flight instructor for 3 years so he doesnt have to go to the Middle East. He wants to fly F-22’s, as all crazy jet jockeys do. But he’ll always be my baby. I told him to go fly for the Coast Guard, then he’ll be protecting our boarders and not another country, but the good military man he is, he will do his duty as assigned. Mommy says tell your commander I said “you are not allowed to go to Iraq”. dont think that will fly, but its going to kill me if he has to go. Im so very very proud of my sons, but Im so scared for all our sons who chose to serve their country.

  345. d1shima July 16, 2008 7:28 pm

    Stephen,

Very painful for those who lost their jobs of course. But with the way mgmt went about it today I can’t help but think of the concern you who remain must feel.
Jodi Leong mentioned in her report that the HA mgmt was supposed to go by seniority in determining who got cut. It sounds like they did, but not in the direction I was thinking when she reported it!

  346. Pauoa Boy July 16, 2008 7:31 pm

Mrs. A-House – Howzit Ma…I got the posters…mahalos planny. Yes was nice to meet most of the LoCal crew, Aunty Ronnie is very beautiful of course and knows her football well! Can’t wait for the next CC or a tailgate at one of the games garrans going be fun. Yups so much more of the Tsai-ko family to meet and looking forward to meeting Aunty Rob25 soon. The little one going be 2 tommorrow but amazing how akamai they get. We went to pick out a cake and he was flipping through the decoration book, he started to name all the characters, Buzz, Spongebob, but I guess like me he’s a car guy so ended up stopping on Cars Lightning McQueen. Then with influence from the older brother kept askin I wonna pezzent daddy peez…

  347. d1shima July 16, 2008 7:43 pm

From a feature story on Cory Nielsen from last season:

he has an early eye on the University of Hawaii, in his mother Cheryl’s hometown of Honolulu. Mom has made it plain that she’d prefer to have him on this side of the Pacific.

“I know my mom doesn’t want to hear that, but I have some cousins who go there and I have family out there, so that seems like home right now,” he said.

    Welcome home, brah!

  349. Pauoa Boy July 16, 2008 7:45 pm

LixK: prayers for your mom…Hope you receive good news soon..

Deepest sympathies to the Brostrom family..for the ultimate sacrifice…got a niece in the Navy right now stationed in Virginia (I think)

It was very sad to hear of the layoffs(firing)…Dick Adair’s oldest son was a classmate of my 1st daughter for many many years. His wife is a teacher at Brie’s school.

PB: No..no..no..you and Kai did not run us off…if not for the week night thing I probably would have stayed till closing like the last time.

Great news on the early verbal commits…have been watching BR Stutzman run in track till his hammy prob.

PB: Sending my best wishes for a very Happy Birthday to your son…Give him a great big hug from another “hanai aunty” from the WB..so dad did his little “peez” for a pessent work? Whadja get him? A brand new car?

  357. Garret July 16, 2008 8:31 pm

It was *great* to see so many people at the Calf Call! We had many regulars (Ronnie, Ed, UKU, Paul, etc.), some posters who had never been to a Calf Call before (great to meet Dennis, losthawaiian, and Pauoa Boy and his family), and even a lurker or two. I’m sorry that I’m leaving out a few names…I’ve been off blog since the Calf Call because I have a proposal due tomorrow and the caffeine is wearing off, so I’m pretty brain dead right now. Or I should say even more brain dead than normal…

I *loved* the food at Ono’s! Rice, long rice, miso soup, chicken katsu, spicy pork, and kalbi for about $9 was a good deal. The free shave ice/ice cream that they provided was great too.

Ronnie *really* tried her best to convince everyone to go to the BSU game…but I don’t think she had much success. We were talking so much about the different games and getting to know a little about each other that I forgot to ask Pauoa Boy about the Blog Bash! I’ll hopefully get to see him other times soon so I’ll ask then.

SteveM, thank you very, very much for the polo shirt. It looks awesome and I will treasure it and wear it on special occasions. Thank you to Pauoa Boy for the decals that were left over from the Bash…those will be proudly used by my family!

  358. Garret July 16, 2008 8:33 pm

It is horrible to hear about the layoffs at the Advertiser. And informing people that they are fired via e-mail really shows a lack of respect and courtesy. I hope that everyone finds a good job soon…

  359. Mrs. A-House July 16, 2008 8:34 pm

    Momotaro –

Looked for you at the blog bash. Wish you could have joined us. I want you to sign my book. BTW, if Pauoa Boy can call me “mom”, no shame, you can call me Aunty A-House. LOL

  360. Garret July 16, 2008 8:34 pm

My deepest condolences to the Brostrom family.

  361. Garret July 16, 2008 8:36 pm

USC got a good QB for the future…

Matt Barkley, a guitar-playing, spiral-throwing quar- terback from Santa Ana Mater Dei, was selected Wednesday as the Gatorade male high school athlete of the year during a celebrity-filled ceremony at the Sofitel Hotel in Los Angeles.

Barkley, who has committed to USC and is preparing for his senior year of high school, is the first junior to win the award. Past recipients include LeBron James, Dwight Howard, Greg Oden and Kevin Love.

The 6-foot-3 Barkley, who has a 3.77 grade-point average, plays guitar at church functions and helped spearhead Mater Dei’s Monarchs for Marines project that raised more than $100,000 for families of wounded and fallen Marines.

He also completed 63% of his passes for 3,576 yards and 35 touchdowns last season.

  362. Garret July 16, 2008 8:37 pm

I have to pull an Esme now…got to get back to work.

  363. Pauoa Boy July 16, 2008 8:38 pm

JaM – Sheesh new car? He’s onleh 2… We actually have to go pick up his presents in the morning… plus we’re taking him to Lego Land this weekend, probably Saturday, so anyone in the LoCal area who would like to join us can…just email me at pauoaboy31 at yahoo dot com…

Gotta second what Garret said about the food at OnoOno Hawaiian BBQ in Tustin. That place garrans broke mout akshon. Probably the best tasting local kine grinds I’ve tasted away from home so far.

Just to tease my plate consisted of the following mouth watering entree:
    DA LUAU SPESHO…
Laulau, Kalua Pig, Ahi Poke, Potato Mac Salad, Rice, and someones specially made Kim Chee…winnahs fo sho
Plus to top it off the Shave Ice – Ice Cream combo was refreshing to say the least…

  369. d1shima July 16, 2008 8:55 pm

Boy that sure sounds bettah than the yakidofu and watercress I had tonite.

PB: What about a new set of “Hot Wheels?”

  372. gigi-hawaii © July 16, 2008 8:59 pm

    PB, no poi?

  373. Pauoa Boy July 16, 2008 9:01 pm

d1shima – Definite grinds that place…I’ve been to many local food places near and far and this place is probably top 3 as far as taste of food, portion size, reasonable pricing, and you also get complimentary miso soup when you get one plate.

  374. Pauoa Boy July 16, 2008 9:04 pm

JaM – Hot wheels…I get one room in my house designated for toys. Put it this way my boys have at least 4 plastic tubs full of just cars. I think though since he loves cars so much it might be time for a Big Wheel car or truck. Trying to find the Lightning McQueen one from the movie Cars since it is his favorite…

    Alojah again,

Sorry for such a late response !

Thank you for the information about the ILH/OIA split.
I haven’t been able to find ANYTHING on the internet, but I haven’t really gone and interviewed anyone yet about it.
Your information has helped me greatly so far (:

if you need someone to interview I know a few who was in the thick of it when it happened. some were coaches, school principals, athletic directors and even league directors.

  376. Pauoa Boy July 16, 2008 9:07 pm

Aunty gigi – I would’ve love to have poi, but I no trust when the poi is frozen, then defrosted and served. I’m really picky when comes to poi, has to be fresh for me or else I no like… But that would have definitely put the dish over the top garrans…

Just got through watching Florida and Michigan in last year’s bowl game. Our defense can get to Tebow and disrupt his passing game and with our LB’s, stop his run. Michigan played man coverage and went after Tebow and it worked…We can to with Mouton, Dowling, Roberts, etc., just got to believe….

my aunty used to send up poi when we put on the luau at our school. she and my uncle ran the poi mill in Kalihi, later moved to Kauai and ran the Waimea mill for the Robinson family. I rememba she said ” boy the poi going be frozen so no defrost and lomi. you got to reheat the poi first, let it cool den lomi it.” she used to ship up 4 – 25lbs bags to us in Wahington. after did what she said poi was really fresh and last long too.

as for me I ono day to two day old poi. at my grandma house used to eat straight from the barrel.

My husband (and the family) were stationed in Okinawa. Our youngest was born in the Naval Hospital there. koakane – I can eat day ol das about it though as sometimes the poi get too sour for my taste buds. I no trust though when poi is served in mainland cause I know they defrost um and then mix em with water lil bit to soften em up but can taste the difference. Maybe if they carry the root so I could buy em and pound the kalo to make poi myself then I wouldn’t mind…but ah das auryte…

Ronnie wanted me to go to BSU again. I haven’t been back there since we left when I was in fourth grade. I just can’t handle them cheating with that stupid blue field. She’s very persistant!

I am looking forward to going to Fresno and showing our Hawaiian pride! Hopefully, Ronnie’s boy Ian will have some big friends that we can take along for protection…not necessarily for us. LOL

    Pauoa Boy

Just want to thank you for your service. I know that your family deserves some gratitude as well. Hopefully, we will get a chance to at least meet at the Fresno game. I will be at Ronnie’s for about five days…we’ll have to try and get together then.

  393. Rob25 July 16, 2008 9:41 pm

Koakane – I agree that the poi is good if you defrost and then mix it right. I’m like PB…gotta have only fresh poi. I usually buy the Hanalei Poi because I think that it stays fresher longer and most of my family doesn’t eat poi. I gotta have poi with my luau stew and lomi salmon!

  394. gigi-hawaii © July 16, 2008 9:43 pm

Roy’s Waikiki served hubby a small dish of poi to eat with his beef shortribs. He said it was too bland. Waiter told him the poi was to offset the spicy ribs. But hubby no like. lol

  398. Mrs. A-House July 16, 2008 9:46 pm

    duffer –

Mahalo for the fishing pics site address. A-House is really looking forward to sharing his rock cod with the Tsaikos. He told me there is one 13-lb.? butterfish reserved for the Tsaiko-gate in September. Hope you, Keyton and Whitey can join us.

    sjmacro –

Mahalo for posting the pics of the JUGS machine. Midori and I had never seen one before…such a clever invention. We hope to see it in action soon.

    Pauoa Boy –

Midori and I love poi…prefer fresh, but day old is ok, too. Midori mixes the lomi salmon into the poi. Poor ting…A-House never touches poi. Bad experience from small-kid time turned him off, big time. He’ll tell you the whole story some day. And what a nice customer appreciation touch to serve a complimentary ice-cream-shave ice dessert. Only in Tustin, I guess. Got to admit, though, local-kine fuud tastes twice as good when dining with Tsaikos.

    Koakane –

Midori and I don’t do well at vacation destinations that are isolated from shopping malls, have no tv / radio / telephones / internet hookups. We could handle fishing, but only with solid ground underneath our feet. I especially get seasick very easily. I don’t even have to be in a boat to get sick. Once on a trip to Hong Kong, A-House warns me, “don’t look at the boat.” Can you imagine?…standing on the pier just looking at the ferry bobbing up and down in the water made me ill. I’m pathetic.

  402. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc July 16, 2008 9:49 pm

    Gigi – #262:

Please go visit MSN or any news website and look at the advertising and how it is placed on the site – advertisers started flocking to the Internet about 2001 and have flooded the ether ever since. These days, the technology can actually direct advertising to selected readers.

I made the mistake two years ago in clicking on an ad for a very specific type of cosmetic product and, ever since, every time I log onto the website, similar products start racing, flashing, jiggling, and “yelling” at me. When I log onto the same site on other computers, nothing like that happens.

I really shouldn’t complain, however, as I haven’t bought a “real” paper in years. Perhaps if I were looking for a job or a place to live, I probably would want to have access to a classified section, but other than that, I can’t see buying a paper for the advertising if I’m not buying anything. I do know that I was surprised a few months ago while reading a paper left at the laundromat as to how much color is used in printing these days.

When I do read a “real” downtown daily, it’s been bought by someone else.

From time to time, I wonder how things would have turned out had we been able to find the right partner. We owned a multi-media production company from 1992 through October, 2006, when we shut it down because we simply could not compete in the market anymore. I remember begging two potential investors back in 1999 to envision the Internet as the most critical business tool at their disposal and being patted on the head while being shown the door because, as they kept telling me, nobody is going to buy things on the Internet or watch videos on their computer screens.

AL: Will attendees be able to get take-out at the Cattle Call if we don’t eat anything on site? Or can people pay a small service fee to sit at the table without eating? If we have to pay the full price to attend but do not eat, then who gets the money?

What a day – off to drain the brain by watching some tellybizion.

  403. bighilofan2 July 16, 2008 9:49 pm

    KOAKANE KOAKANE pretty please

howzit. exactly how do you reheat frozen poi? microwave… how many minutes? cut em in chunks an put em in plastic bag and put in boiling water? for how long? pretty please for the lesson in cuizine culcha. ho boy, dis is extremely super valuable info, we all get family on da mainland who’d love to taste da islands more often, and dat would be da bomb.

    thanks for your grandma!

  404. Rob25 July 16, 2008 9:51 pm

Mrs. A-House – I’m with you and Midori. That’s why my idea of camping is a nice carpeted, a/c cabin at Waianae with TV DVD and full kitchen. I don’t always need the shopping, but other amenities are nice.

I went fishing on a boat with a couple that we are friends with. That was fun, but then the water was pretty good that day. I don’t eat fish or like to touch bait….but other than that I think that I am a good fishing companion because I don’t want anything that I catch.

  405. Jason July 16, 2008 9:51 pm

Nah, I didn’t like poi as a kid. As I got older, it became an acquired taste.

    Rob25,

    Howzit.
Thank you for being such a “rock” in your family. Your pride shines through.
btw, if your hubby should decide to join us at the KK it would be my honor to “treat” you folks that night. Let me know.

I’m gonna join in with Ronnie and start buggin’ you to join us in Boise for da game! Although, having visited there once, I gotta say the shorter the trip, the better 😉

  409. Pauoa Boy July 16, 2008 9:55 pm

Aunty Rob25 – Fo reals Ronnie persistent about the Boise game lol. Nah, I would love to make all the away games but with my job, plane tickets, etc…I dunno. If anything I would probably make Fresno for sure and then maybe a slight chance for Boise, since we get family up there. No worries I garrans we will meet when you come over this way.

d1shima – Nah, when it comes to poi, I gotta make um myself cause get spesho ingrediments other than water to make um not too sweet, not too rancid, but just right ah… 🙂

  410. gigi-hawaii © July 16, 2008 9:56 pm

Doc, there are lots of stories in the newspapers that never make it to the internet or TV, so it will be a pity if newspapers bite the dust. Knowledge is power.

  411. Rob25 July 16, 2008 9:59 pm

d1shima – That is soooo sweet of you. I am very proud of all that serve. My being a “rock” is the least that I can do to support my husband and let him serve without concern about what is going on at home.

I would go, but I had to make a choice and I might be going to Fort Hood to see hubby before he leaves for Iraq. Unfortunately, I am not a millionaire and need to show up for my job. 🙁 I will keep it in mind though should circumstances change.

  412. BG July 16, 2008 10:02 pm

    Rob25 (and Doris too)

There are a number of us who have attachments to the military…some old retirees like Kekoa, Warriormojo, A-House and others…and the young warriors like Pauoa Boy. Many more just have feelings for the folks who bear the burden for us. Hoohiki asked, “How you gonna act?”. I would answer it this way…do not carry a guilty conscience because we live in paradise and can attend the myriad of fun Tsaiko (and otherwise) events. The folks who die doing the dirty work do so because they, and many others, think the American dream is worth dying for. So, make sure their sacrifices are not in vain. Laugh and cherish each moment, “making memories”…and also be thankful. I think that’s all that’s needed…just say “Thank-you”.

There are many who are tired of the “war”. There’s hope that getting out will stop all the pain. Unfortunately, we’re going to have to learn to live with the present realities…which may not be self-evident to Mr. and Mrs. Person-in-the-Street. What’s going on now is not our parents’, grandparents’, or great-grandparents’ wars. Terrorism is pervasive. It’s even underground in the US. Not saying this to scare anyone. It is what it is. Let’s just say that America is OK as long as there are enough citizens willing to defend it. From my viewpoint, that number is dwindling as less young adults and parents are willing to put aside the good life. Look at the troops in the forefront of the action and you will see an ever increasing number of non-citizens from Mexico, the Philippines and other asian countries…those who would risk their lives to become citizens and have their families live a piece of the good life.

Rob25, I was at the stadium the last time the 29th went out. And I saw all of them off at the airfield. I can’t miss supporting them on this mobilization also. The KK will have to wait a little bit. I’ll be there.

  413. Pauoa Boy July 16, 2008 10:04 pm

gigi Sugar in poi, what you trying for make candy, aiyah no can already lol…

  414. Stretch July 16, 2008 10:06 pm

Stretch…did you have your white board at the bash? If you did, what did you write on it?

Rob – the board was there but I didn’t write anything on it. I had the “Boise” Potato Head on top of it. I will make it an “Idaho” Potato Head for this coming season.

  415. Rob25 July 16, 2008 10:09 pm

BG – Thank you for your thoughts. You are such a wise and compassionate man. I am lucky to have found people like you on this blog. I agree completely with all that you said.

I will also be there as they mobilize again. I would never miss seeing my husband off as you just never when we will see each other again. Like I stated before, that is my duty to him as his wife and the country, to support his call to protect the American way of life and improve things for others around the world.

I’m proud and privileged to count you and the many others on this blog as my friends. I know that our friends at the KK will be there when we are done attending the Aloha ceremony.

  420. Rob25 July 16, 2008 10:18 pm

SteveM – Just some information so that you can update road game plans. I will be attending with my friend hibiscuslei who is too shy to post anything. We are going to be staying with Ronnie. Ronnie wants to stay up in Fresno the night of the game, but I would rather go somewhere else…not sure what we will do.

Will the Alumni association have their tailgate at this game? I wonder how we can get some information about the tailgate.

Anyone else going up for the Fresno game?

  438. Kekoa July 17, 2008 12:25 am

BHF2 ~ How to reconstitute frozen poi and make ’em taste like it was fresh poi if it was in fact flash frozen when fresh to start.

    1. Take it out of the bag(s) still frozen of course and place inside a proper sized Pyrex bowl (or one that can resist high temp).

    2. Place inside a large steamer pot. and let the poi steam until it has liquified into the gooey glob we know and love. Take the whole bowl out of the steamer (careful, dat maka is hot!) and let it cool inside the fridge for about an hour.

    3. The bowl will still be a bit warm, but way cool enuff to handle. Get a portable cake mixer, and mix the poi with some crushed ice and a little water sprinkled inside. 2 Things will happen. One, it’ll mix & stretch the poi a bit and two, it’ll cool it down to a respectable, but very nice taste level. Also, at this point you can add whatever you prefer in it, because it is now fit for human consumption.

    4. The process may be a bit lengthy, but it will help keep you from ‘burning’ the poi by cooking with direct heat as some folks try to do. Steam it, and you will never scorch it or ruin the taste.

    Chef Kekoa

  439. ラスベガス July 17, 2008 2:18 am

one year in summer fun I entered a poi eating contest.
it was the first time i ate poi.
needless to say, I placed last and chunks of poi rained down among the spectators.

took Mrs. LV to a sushi restaurant tonite.

very disappointed with the quality of fish, Mrs said “nama kusai” i.e. a little old and overly fishy taste.
Mrs. also said that all the sauces were too sweet, even for a non Japanese chef.

Large Sapporo cost $7.95 and an Ume shu cost 4.95.

Owner/chef is a local boy from east shore area and gave us a generous discount, but cannot recommend.

nice owner and wife, but need to work on freshness also out of maguro.
what sushi joint has no maguro!

    😈

  474. MeiLing July 17, 2008 6:50 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!!!

I just experienced the warp zone on the blog…ST’s pic not showing, text really tiny, ad up at top took up 1/2 the window… then back again.

My hula sistahs & brahdahs just gave me a going away present at our ho’ike that included a UH “H” magnetic logo. Since my Subaru is plastic on the back (yuck), the only place it is sticking is the gas filler door. Anyone know if this is a problem if I stick it on there?

d1shima, you work for a dealership…. do you know???

poi… I’ve never had a problem heating frozen poi with some water in a pot to reconstitute it. Just have to make sure you stay at the stove & stir. The keeds here put some coconut milk in the poi last year and it was ono!

    Condolences to the Brostrom ‘ohana.

  475. d1shima July 17, 2008 6:58 am

    Great Morning All!

    Mei Ling,
    Yep.

Remember that we did the poi melting thing once for #1 son wen he was in OR.
