Court presence

It doesn’t matter the sport. It is a big deal whenever Hawaii and UCLA meet in anything. Adding to the appeal of tonight’s Outrigger Volleyball Invitational are:

• UCLA has a rarity — a 7-foot player. But opposite Robert Page isn’t just there to block and hit over the block. He also has some defensive skills. Against Ohio State, Page had four digs.

• Every so often there is a UH opponent who is so good for so long the player enters Chris Herren status. Bruin outside hitter Gonzalo Quiroga has been good for a long time — and mostly against UH.

• Nobody pays to watch somebody coach, the saying goes. But John Speraw is an exceptional coach and strategist. A lot of volleyball can be learned from watching how Speraw manages a match and his players.

Aloha all. Just recalling a volleyball story from back in the day. It’s not men’s vball, but very entertaining. In the mid 80s, the wahine s were at the apex of their rivalry w the bruins. Upon losing a big match with the women, and Hawaii folk celebrating accordingly, I caught the bruin’s star player, Luz Masyakayan, part hapa-part Filipino , future Olympian, our of the corner of my eye. Well, what ensued was mind blowing for me, she proceeded to throw, with full might several of the bench chairs into the stands. Now, certainly in bad taste, I had never witnessed this type if ferocious competivene before out a gal- sort if breathtaking.

  16. Warrior Dave January 11, 2014 10:40 am

    Mr. A-House,

I think recruiting doesn’t open up till 1/15 of whenever the conference meetings are over. I think that’s what Al is saying above.

  17. Hilo-Warrior January 11, 2014 10:51 am

Is it me or are other fans surprised by the very strong start that the Mens Volleyball team has? Haven’t really followed since moving to Texas last year. But I am happy for the team.

  18. Warrior Dave January 11, 2014 11:06 am

I too am very happy for Charlie Wade and his Warrior men. What a total surprise and I just hope they continue to on his magical run. Not sure if any UH sport can get back to old day attendance records but steady grow in increase attendance is what I’m looking for.

UH basketball team needs to win today or we may only have 5,000 for the next home game. If they win today, I’m hoping for 6,500 to 7,000 fans. Good luck Warriors!!!!

  19. Jm2375 January 11, 2014 11:16 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!!

    Go Bows! Beat UCLA!!
    Let’s pack the house tonight!

  20. Inyoface January 11, 2014 11:31 am

    Beat Northridge too!

  21. Stephen Tsai January 11, 2014 11:48 am

UH is bringing in recruits next weekend and the weekend that’s not the Pro Bowl weekend. Most of the guys who are coming already have committed. Except for some linemen, linebackers and another corner or two, UH is pretty much done.

  22. ai-eee-soos January 11, 2014 11:59 am

    re: 21.

Are they bringing in a QB, JC, perhaps ?

… kinda thin at QB …

  23. Aaron January 11, 2014 12:02 pm

I would put Paul Nihipali into Chris Herren status. I hated that guy and his lollipop serves!

  24. Traitmanz January 11, 2014 1:27 pm

The DBs coming in is the one Daniel Lewis is trying to bring in

  28. PurpleMaple January 11, 2014 2:41 pm

This may turn out a really bad recruiting year. I guess that’s what you can expect after a 1-11 season.

is that 7 foot dude 4 ucla as good as chamberlain was ?

  35. Boolakanaka January 11, 2014 4:35 pm

34–I know you are joking, right??? Wilt was a beast. In several sports he ruled the roost, he was the Big 8 high jump champ 3 years in row, also ran the 100, and threw the shot put . In regards to volleyball, I think it was 78 or 79, visiting some ohana in Seattle and I saw him in a pro vball league, and he dominated. He was not just tall, but he was a freakish athlete….That said, I have not seen the UCLA kid.

  36. d1shima January 11, 2014 5:05 pm

    mi mi mi mi…

  37. st. anthony trojan January 11, 2014 5:08 pm

    Wish I could be there!

  42. Inyoface January 11, 2014 7:09 pm

Tough loss in Northridge but UH got a real decent basketball team.

  43. RainbowCliff January 11, 2014 10:03 pm

Good evening Tsaiko Nation, was at the game tonight vs. the Matadors and all I can say that UH played tough BUT in order for them to win here in LA against the Northridge, Long Beach State, Fullerton, Riverside and a HUGE front line Irvine team they need to play with composure, limited their costly turnovers and not take poor jump shots from 3 point land which leads to run outs and dunks from their opposing teams. Arnold coached a good first half because of ONE main player Issac Fotu, who put on a clinic of post moves, up and under and half hook shots. Issac played SENSATIONAL as Northridge had no answer for him until Coach Reggie Theus went into the half and made adjustments to triple him down low on the block and take his angles away.

2nd half different story as Northridge who’s players are ATHLETIC just started penetrating UH weak interior and was physical and mentally strong the entire night. Stanhardinger did nothing physical the entire night as he was consistently being beat on the boards and to the basket as Northridge athletic bigs were just jumping and flying all over the place. Once the lead got to double digits Reggie went to his spread offense and start eating up the clock but Garret Nevels got them back with just desire and athletic scoring from mid range or lay up. The problem with Nevels he had individual battles with Northridge guards Green and Parks that took him mentally out of the game as his 5th foul he just blew a gasket with slamming his hands on the floor and a few foul words that clearly told his displeasure to the officials. Bows need to play smart with the officials as too many times they were in bad positions or just got beat by Northridge speed which caused reaching fouls on both guards or interior front line players. Shamburger sat on the bench a long time as Arnold was just livid with his poor outside shooting as Enos who played well but he was not a factor offensively as the remaining seconds every time he touched the ball Northridge guards became physical with him as he quickly got the ball to steady players. Smith the first guard just got beat up physically by Northridge players the entire night as he was totally frustrated not getting fouls called his way. Spearman played well but did not get a lot of shot attempts as Northridge defense was just swarming with arms and physical bodies in their 2-3 zone or man to man defense.

To the Bows credit they came back with pressure and GREAT man coverage as turnovers resulted into run outs and lay-ups as Garret Nevels was the catalyst with his TOUGH metal and physical play.

In conclusion Bows are good BUT the Big West is TOUGH and in order to win on this LA road trip, Warriors have to play SMART with their emotions under control. Fotu is a perfect example of calm playing as I had the pleasure of meeting him after the game, sharing my big fro picture when I played as a bow and taking a picture with him. A wonderful young man who will have a stellar career IF he stays or decides to play professional with his New Zealand team as I hope not.

Great game between two both teams who are evenly matched. Round II will be interesting when the Matadors come to Hawaii as of right now bows are 0-2 and the conference is going to get TOUGHER as you have not seen Irvine who has NJAI a 7’6″ freshmen center from Africa with an arm span of 18 inches. Once he starts to get touches inside LOOK OUT as the 2nd coming of Manute Bol has arrived !

    Imua Warriors !

  44. Warrior Dave January 11, 2014 11:16 pm

Awesome recap Rainbow Cliff!! Hope the Warriors can learn and turn this thing around.

  45. UHfan808 January 12, 2014 2:05 am

Good super early morning, Tsai-kos and Lurk-ers! 🙂

  46. UHfan808 January 12, 2014 2:21 am

Had a great time cheering for the men’s volleyball team against the bruins last nite.

Congratulations to UCLA for winning the tournament.

Wish we had won but our mvb Rainbow Warriors worked hard and did their best.

Second set we dominated 25:14; Thursday nite we won against Ohio State; and Friday nite against Penn State 🙂

Good luck to the UCLA, Ohio State, and Penn State teams and for coming down for the tournament!

Even more luck to our team – We’re at a good season start and I’m excited to see how the season plays out!

    GO MVB RAINBOW WARRIORS!!!

  51. Shoko January 12, 2014 8:34 am

Wish the NFL would mic up the players so we can hear all the on-field trash talk that goes on. Then again, its probably not appropriate for television.

  52. azwarrior22 January 12, 2014 9:17 am

Pretty slow football news leading up to recruiting weekends
