Mr. Popularity

There’s no doubt Colt Brennan is still popular in Hawai‘i. All 1,000 tickets were sold for his autograph session today at Pictures Plus. Here’s Colt:

Here’s his schedule:

Tonight — A homecoming party will be held in his honor, starting at 9 p.m., at Studio 36 (Aaron’s, on the 36th floor of the Ala Moana Hotel). Brennan will make an appearance. Sorry, kids, but it’s for those 21 and older.

Tomorrow —
Brennan will autograph 240 specially designed shirts and 40 limited-edition felts at the Barefoot League store in Kapahulu (next to the Safeway). Brennan will be at the store from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The items go on sale starting at 11:30 a.m. They priced at $35 (felt), $30 (kids’ shirt, XS to L) and $40 (adult S to XXXL). Brennan only will be signing these items.
For details, call 734-0200.

It’s summer, but spring cleaning continues, as UH officials try to prepare for the coming academic year. For now, the Holiday Bowl and Sugar Bowl trophies are stored on a cabinet in the student workers’ area.

While we’re on the third floor, let’s continue our tour. Here’s Coach Mack’s bookcase:

Here’s Mack’s television:

And here’s T-Mack — grandson Taylor Mack — who knows everything about college football:

It’s always cool to see how the seniors have assumed leadership roles. Here’s weakside linebacker Adam Leonard (rigth) offering advice to incoming freshman Paipai Falemalu:

Here’s quarterback Inoke Funaki helping out grayshirt receiver Kalua Noa:

In a pinch, some will play out of position to fill spots during unsupervised workouts. Here’s Funaki aligned as a slotback:

Apparently surfing is a big activity this summer. Wideout Jett Jasper has taken quarterbacks Brent Rausch, Steele Jantz and Greg Alexander surfing. For Alexander, who is 6 feet 5 (or 6-4), a looooong board had to be rented. Adam Leonard, wideout Malcolm Lane and cornerback Ryan Mouton have gone surfing. Last week, Mouton stepped on wana. He toughed it out, making it to an unsupervised workout, but he didn’t want his picture taken. So here’s Mouton’s hand:

Malcolm Lane, on the other hand, is not as camera-shy. He said he wears the Reds’ cap because he is a fan of Ken Griffey Jr.

It’s been called to my attention from an anonymous caller that slotback Jon Medeiros does not get enough blog love. Medeiros is listed as the No. 2 left slotback (behind Mike Washington). Besides being a talented player, Medeiros is one of the few who can make a perfect shaka while wearing gloves:

30medeiros.JPG

And here’s a shot of Medeiros and safety Spencer Smith. Sorry, ladies, but Smith is going back to his home in Georgia for three weeks, meaning we won’t have any more shots of him for a while. As for why he practices without a shirt, Smith said he needed a tan for his homecoming. Smith also is an admitted lurker. The other day he was giving the Warrior Beat address to another player.

Welcome back Colt…I hope you take back the spirit of Hawaii with you on your return.

  2. SteveM July 5, 2008 12:58 am

Wow– 2nd? …and I had to get past the HA survey…AGAIN!.

  3. Stephen Tsai July 5, 2008 1:04 am

    This site is horrible today.
I’ve been trying to post since 11:55 p.m.
It’s those nerdy techs again, fussin’ around in the midnight hour. What can you do?

  4. SteveM July 5, 2008 1:09 am

I know Colt has had a lot of autographing practice, but doing a little math, if he signs 1,000 items in a 3-hour period, that averages to 5.56 items/minute or one item every 10.8 seconds. It’s been done before, but that sure takes endurance…

Anyway, good to see Colt back !

  5. Stretch July 5, 2008 1:17 am

Since all those Holiday and Sugar Bowl items are sitting in a cabinet, I am sure that Koakane can find a place to “air them out” for a few hours on Thursday night.

  6. HiFlyer July 5, 2008 1:21 am

SteveM, you’re seeing the survey again too? I can’t get past the survey to read the comments and have to keep going through the featured blogs page and then click on the current post.

  7. Ralph July 5, 2008 1:26 am

Mac has about 5 autographed footballs on his shelf.

  8. BigWave96744 July 5, 2008 1:28 am

    Stephen,
I heard that in his senior year, Colt spent a lot of time in the compliance office signing waivers that he was not profitting from all the Colt For Heisman shirts being printed and sold, or all the signed stuffs on ebay..

At one point during the season, he was making trip daily…

Glad to see now he’s cashing in.

  9. Ralph July 5, 2008 1:30 am

refreshing and sending comments sure takes a long time, especially when you look and there are only 6 posts

  10. las vegas July 5, 2008 1:33 am

    Hey, I’m alive!
Mrs LV has decided to use the cold shoulder treatment.
I just have to last a week or two eating at fast food joints

  11. HiFlyer July 5, 2008 1:36 am

I see that coach Mack has a copy of HA book displayed on the shelf and he has a nice stand for his TV.

  12. HiFlyer July 5, 2008 1:38 am

LV, glad your still with us, so did she say anything at all about the new car?

  13. Ralph July 5, 2008 1:38 am

Las Vegas bring home sushi and nabeyaki udon for the wifey see if that helps

  14. Stephen Tsai July 5, 2008 1:42 am

I believe all of the “game balls” are from Texas Tech and the Seattle Seahawks. He has a cool photo with some of the 49er standouts.

  15. Ralph July 5, 2008 1:42 am

Kekoa is there a cc with pauoa boy today for lunch (Saturday)

  16. BigWave96744 July 5, 2008 1:42 am

    Stephen,
Great seeing your picture of the volunteer workouts.
Besides the JC and walkon guys, I’ve seen you post pictures of Tui and Paipai..
Any sighting of other local recruits (Haku Correa, Geordon Hanohano, Christian Vasconcellos, Alema Tachibana, Earvin Sione, Art Laurel)?

  17. las vegas July 5, 2008 1:43 am

HiFlyer, Mrs has not uttered a sound since 5am this morning, even the dogs cringe when she walk by.

Ralph, from past experience I’ve learned to shut up and make myself scarce, flowers makes her madder.

  18. Ralph July 5, 2008 1:45 am

They snooze, they lose, red shirts for out of shaped fb players

  19. Ralph July 5, 2008 1:48 am

ST how about a chat with the boys of summer or did mac put up a firewall on chatting on line

  20. Ralph July 5, 2008 1:50 am

I’m sure Adam is waiting for you to ask him to chat with the Tsaikos

  21. Stephen Tsai July 5, 2008 1:53 am

Ralph: I’ll have some chats coming up. I was teaching during Summer Session I, and didn’t have time to do chats.

BigWave: Christian Vasconcellos will begin practicing regularly starting Monday. I’ve seen Art Laurel a couple of times. I have not seen Tachibana or Sione.

  22. SteveM July 5, 2008 1:54 am

HiFlyer — the survey pops up everytime there’s a blog tweak, I think. Been seeing it daily recently but it did take a few seconds longer to let me pass tonight. I think this was one of the first complaints when this blog beta test started. But it has always let me pass and loaded the page.

las vegas — what’s with the car problem? She didn’t like the model? She wanted your Hummer? 😕

  23. Stretch July 5, 2008 1:57 am

okay, pau typing out the name tags for the party so time for me go sleep. See everyone tomorrow.

  24. HiFlyer July 5, 2008 1:58 am

SteveM, I just tried reloading the blog and guess what I don’t have the survey pop up anymore.

  25. Stephen Tsai July 5, 2008 2:00 am

I swear the blog tweaks are motivated by boredom … or mischief.
Sometimes I’ll take the scenic route to my desk, and I’ll pass by the techs. They always have the blog up. They should test out the other blogs instead.
By the way, did you know that Donovan had a chat on the Hot Seat? It drew only 30 comments.

  26. HiFlyer July 5, 2008 2:14 am

Stephen, I think it’s because all the feedback comes from your blog site so they think that it’s the only one that has any problems.

  27. las vegas July 5, 2008 2:37 am

    SteveM,
I was good boy, just wen go look at the car, brought it home to show Mrs LV and she approved, told me “keep the payments under 300 dollars”.

I took that to mean GO AHEAD AND BUY!!!!, but I guess not.
Either way good bye Isuzu Trooper, no buyers remorse in Nevada.
In retrospect, she is probably pissed be cause this is not the first time I did it, I guess my mantra would be ‘it’s easier to ask forgiveness than to ask permission’.

  28. Kekoa (iPhone) July 5, 2008 2:39 am

Ralph ~ I have been really busy, so no ‘official CC planned for Pauoa Boy. He knows he’s welcome to hang out with us when he has time away from his family.

  29. las vegas July 5, 2008 2:39 am

who or what is the “hot seat”?

  30. las vegas July 5, 2008 2:45 am

    Hot seat= Jeanne Mariani-Belding
    Never knew this existed

  31. SteveM July 5, 2008 2:51 am

las vegas — aha,..so we can add “cars” to your list of temptations? Pretty long list now… 🙂

    Just kidding. Goodnight my friend!

    Good night everyone!

  32. Kekoa (iPhone) July 5, 2008 2:55 am

LV ~ I am a proponent for Tsaikette interoperability. I buy, you fly!

Applies to most sales. Cars are a very touchy issue. One must define “how far to fly!”

I’m just glad it’s you, and not me!

  33. Kekoa (iPhone) July 5, 2008 2:57 am

    note SteveM!

  34. las vegas July 5, 2008 3:16 am

    Kekoa,
Actually the list is kinda long.

    Suzuki 550 motorcycle
    Suzuki Intruder motorcycle
    Chevy Monte Carlo
    Miniature Schnauzer Spikey
    Miniature Schnauzer Shadow
    Kia Sportage small suv
    Dodge Charger vrooom!

in all fairness the second dog was for her after the first one died.
maybe next time I’ll ask first

  35. 99club July 5, 2008 3:46 am

    Good morning Tsaikos…

    LV-
That’s some funny stuff. I was thinking about getting a Suzuki C50T from the local dealer and of course this morning’s front page story of the local paper is about all the motorcycle accidents due to increased ridership, gas prices, etc. You-know-who made sure to point the article out. Guess my old Trek 700 will have to do.

  36. chawan_cut July 5, 2008 3:56 am

    Stretch, Stephen,

That’s a good idea for the trophies. Is it possible to have them brought downstairs to be on display for us?

  37. Pomai July 5, 2008 4:27 am

ST did you get the email I sent you?

  38. Pomai July 5, 2008 4:32 am

I noticed the other day someone mentioned about all the white space to the right on the blog, it seems like it will be used for more ad’s, they seem to be increasing from day to day.

  39. wafan July 5, 2008 4:47 am

    Good morning everyone!

Looks like things are coming right along for the beastly big blog bash. Awesome! But then, what else could anyone expect from the skilled and talented Tsai-kos?

    Stretch, et al . . .

The glassware looks good. I’ll be in contact with an order a bit later once I figure out which one I would like.

  40. wafan July 5, 2008 4:48 am

    Good morning Pomai!

How is everything out on the East side?

  41. BigWave96744 July 5, 2008 4:51 am

    Stephen,
Did someone tell Mouton that the best thing for to heal a Wana accident is “shishi”?

  42. MeiLing July 5, 2008 4:54 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

ST ~ Good to see who’s at the UWs. Props to Leonard & Funaki for providing the leadership this summer. GO WARRIORS!!!

LV, guess you just have to eat at Yokohama Kaigenro for lunch.

  43. wafan July 5, 2008 5:00 am

Dang, if I had to eat out at Las Vegas every meal for a couple of weeks — wow. I would be HUGE! There would not be enough workouts to keep my svelte figure.

Not that it makes any difference now. HA!

    MeiLing . . .

How is your knee coming along?

  44. gigi-hawaii © July 5, 2008 5:48 am

hmmm. Tell me if this is true —

Hubby said, “Haole men are submissive. Haole women are domineering.”

So why da hell did he marry a Korean?

  45. Garret July 5, 2008 5:52 am

    ST,

Isn’t Jett’s last name “Jasper” instead of “Jaspher”?

  46. Garret July 5, 2008 5:54 am

I think this is the first time I’ve seen UH’s logo on Engadget…and it links to the Advertiser article.

Warrior football fans will need to watch their next QB to put up incredible college numbers and proceed to a career as practice squad NFL QB in standard def for the next season or two. Local station KFVE/KHNL just doesn’t see it being feasible to put its PPV University of Hawaii games in HD yet (although the local cable channel on Oceanic already shows high school games in HD). The good news (we guess) is that HD is on the way, someday, unfortunately the cost of the necessary new facilities — despite the Hula Bowl managing to go HD — has put it on the back burner at the moment.

  47. Garret July 5, 2008 5:57 am

    Congratulations to Jesse Sapolu!

The Farrington Alumni and Community Foundation, Hawaii’s first and largest foundation in support of a public high school, will honor six outstanding leaders on July 22, 2008, at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Coral Ballroom.

Hundreds of alumni of Wallace Rider Farrington High School in Kalihi and their friends will attend the second annual Governors’ Hall of Fame Awards Dinner.

The foundation will induct into the Governors’ Hall of Fame:

Jesse Sapolu, class of ’79, All-State football player at FHS, All-WAC at University of Hawaii, National Football League All-Pro offensive lineman as a member of the San Francisco 49ers, four-time Super Bowl champion.

  48. wafan July 5, 2008 5:58 am

    GG . . .

Is he saying you are more dominate than a haole woman? By the way, I have not found that to be completely true.

Do you tell him what, when, where, how and for how long? Okay, you may not always tell him but do you allow him to think he is making the decisions? No doubt the first time you gave him the “upset Asian woman stink-eye” he cowered in fear.

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

  49. gigi-hawaii © July 5, 2008 6:02 am

    Wafan,

Hubby and I have a strange relationship. He usually lets me be the boss, but when he really believes in something or really wants something, he assumes leadership.

  50. djmitcho July 5, 2008 6:05 am

Good Morning everyone. Hope everyone had a good and safe 4th!

  51. gigi-hawaii © July 5, 2008 6:07 am

The smoke from the fireworks in our neighborhood wasn’t that bad so I didn’t turn on the a/c in the family room, but did in the bedroom.

GARRET, are you familiar with this Wii game? I think it came out this year.

Hubby watched the hot dog eating contest on TV yesterday and plans to buy MLE.

  53. wafan July 5, 2008 6:48 am

    GG . . .

Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! I do not think it is what you meant but it is what you wrote. So, I will ask.

You had a lot of smoke in your bedroom?

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

  54. wafan July 5, 2008 6:52 am

The Wii MLE game sounds “interesting”. Better than eating all that food for real, though.

  55. wafan July 5, 2008 6:53 am

    Gosh. Time for Nap #1.

  56. gigi-hawaii © July 5, 2008 6:54 am

nah, no fireworks in my bedroom so no smoke. We always turn on the a/c in the BR so we won’t hear neighbor’s alarm clock at 4 am.

  57. gigi-hawaii © July 5, 2008 6:56 am

ok, it is shhhh time in the gigi home. Hubby does NOT want to know who won at Wimbledon, but I know it was Venus.

    He’s watching the game now.

  58. wafan July 5, 2008 6:56 am

    dj . . .

Things were great on this side of the hill. A light rain kept things damp enough to prevent fires. Watched the Seattle and Tacoma shows on TV last night. The show on Lake Union (KING TV) is always the nicest display with the best music sync.

I hope your 4th was a good one with lots of food, family and friends.

  59. wafan July 5, 2008 6:58 am

    GG . . .

How come? You did not give him permission?

  60. gigi-hawaii © July 5, 2008 7:00 am

    huh? he just likes suspense!

me, I prefer to know the score before the game.

  61. wafan July 5, 2008 7:07 am

    GG . . .

0 to 0 is always the score before the game.

  62. gigi-hawaii © July 5, 2008 7:08 am

    FINAL SCORE, dummy!

  63. gigi-hawaii © July 5, 2008 7:10 am

post 4th of july announcement; waikiki is still here :):):)

ouch, many celebrants, with intoxicants, resulting into deviants….is there such a word? the night life was jumpin and humpin, especially on kuhio ave., cannot believe the crazy activities that the boys in blue allow to happen, must be called supply and demand.

good morning, interesting to see Tui/Paipai working out…..looking for all of the other recruits to show up soon.

  68. djmitcho July 5, 2008 8:33 am

    wafan,
I didn’t even watch fireworks last night. After I got off of work I went to a friends house and chilled in the pool and bbq’d. The only fireworks I saw was the Spokane city show and I only saw it for about 5 secs as I was driving home.

  69. Kekoa July 5, 2008 8:33 am

Pauoa Boy ~ Kona meet Liz this afternoon arriving in from Kauai for a Rotary biz mtg & dinner. She’s here on an overnighter, band practice and then ‘Esme’ back to stage left. On…wait – she will be practicing with Esme, so it’ll be a double Esme outta here! See you on Sunday.

Good to hear that your K-stones are passing without surgery.

Neighbor passed-out due to pain and taken by ambulance to hospital for treatment.

2 years ago, my nephew on Kauai had attack day before we left for our reunion in Vegas – this year, he was fine.

Our best to Mrs LV – tell we said hello and hope to see her soon.

Good Morning Tsaikos!! A few Reminders for the party

    1. I will be making nametags for everyone. It will include your blog name (if any) and your real first name. If there is anyone who has a problem, please email me at tsaikoparty at yahoo.

    2. We will have “Tsaiko” logo items for sale. Glass mugs, t-shirts and stickers. There is limited supply but if we run out, we will take orders and make more. See attached link for pictures of glassware

    3. For people on the outerislands and mainland that are interested in Tsaiko glassware, shirts and stickers, please email me at tsaikoparty at yahoo. It will cost the same as shown plus the shipping. USPS has flat rate boxes that we can use that cost about $10 and can hold maybe 3 pieces. There are bigger boxes that cost $13 for mailing. I will work out the postage with you.

    4. We will be giving one raffle ticket to each person attending for the prize giveaways. Additional raffle tickets can be purchased for $2 each, 10 max. Additional donations will be accepted and all money goes to UH/Football. One prize person – if you win a prize, your other ticket numbers will be void. We want more people winning rather than one person winning multiple prizes.

    5. For those who have not mailed out checks yet, I suggest you mail it out at the latest Monday. If I don’t receive it Thursday morning, you will be required to pay the walk up fee of $25 per person. Any mail that is received after Thursday will be returned.

Re- The first American team to win the 12-under club division at the USA Volleyball Boys Junior Olympic Tournament (source:other paper)

This Hawaii team’s, Ka Ulukoa, remarkable feat not only sees the first time any USA team has taken the Gold but it was in it’s first year of competition.

A division that has been dominated by the Puerto Ricans for the last twenty years and then on this club first try they come in and take gold is a very impressive feat. And it’s deserving of congratulating the team members and the coaching staff of former Hawaii All-American Pono Ma’a and David Engleman. And Ka Ulukoa.

Checking their web site http://www.kaulukoa.com/ to find out more about this youth development program.

Youth sports whether it’s at the high school level all the way down to the Little Leagues, PAL, Big Brothers or club levels irregardless of what sports, male or female, having outlets for the youth is so important in their passage from youth to adults. For the coaches, adults, volunteers and all the sponsors to make this happen knowingly realize that they all are contributing to the full circle effect, which basically means perpetually the youth of today will take away from what they learn from their coaches and years of playing in the leagues and pass it on to the next generation…maybe coming back as coaches or volunteers themselves. And this is good. This handing down effect, one generation to the next, we’re beginning to see…is that more and more of these coaches are products of the UH (like Pono Ma’a), playing at the highest levels and they’re returning to coach and help out with the youth, which the kids of today are the recipients of the *best coaching* that we begin to see results of more, more Hawaii teams are doing well at the tournaments on the mainland. Volleyball, baseball, football, golf and soccer we’re seeing more Hawaii kids enjoying successes and this makes the community and adults very proud and happy.

For Kekoa I know has to be a proud uncle, seeing that his nephew, Pono, returns to his roots, so to speak, and takes a the team to gold is pretty awesome.

We’ve figured out that everyone is Kekoa’s relative.

  76. Bulla July 5, 2008 9:41 am

    Kekoa,

looking forward to seeing your ‘nephew’ this coming week. i actually introduced pono and lisa to each other back in the day. my ex wife used to live with lisa strand, marcie wurts, and diane sebastian. talk about making memories….oh my….coach dave and i had a lot of laughs……2 words to bring back memories….chili & budweiser. haha

    happy 5th of july

  77. Bulla July 5, 2008 9:44 am

    marlis,

i agree 1000% with you regarding teaching our youth; if you don’t know where you’ve been, how will you know where you’re going?

pono is a great example; if we truly believe that our youth are our future, why is it so hard to get more help with quality coaches for various sports? everyone is busy, but if you love the game, really love the game, it boils down to choices……and what we choose to do with the blessings we have been given.

    amen

    A-House Family,

    Good Morning Cousin ST!

Looking forward to reuniting Pono and his lovely wife Lisa with Coach Bulla. I will also be forwarding those very insightful words Marlis had to share with us this moning to ‘Coach’ Pono.

Having a chance to mix and mingle with their fans is what really makes the Ma’a family happy. Those of you who may remember when Pono played for UH might recall him always thanking any and all fans for coming out to each game. He was always very open and appreciative to everyone.

Bulla if you may recall, when you looked up at the very top row of bleachers in Klum gym, there sat the entire klan, including me and Pops. Pono’s dad always wore his lucky ‘K’ cap, and his mom, Blanche appeared as radiant as ever. His sisters, Lani and Lei were always in attendance with a host of wannbe boyfriends seated at a respectful distance from the ladies.

welcome back Colt. kick some ” da kine” this season with da skins.
I lurk alot here, all of you got plenny info. on all kines stuff. Used to go to games when the stadium was built, but stopped going after UH decided to add ‘premium taxation” on the cost of the seats.( 11 of us were in south end loge and even sat thru the von appen years).

but anyways… we all now watch ppv. did anyone see or hear about ppv renewals for this upcoming season. I haven’t seen any notices yet. did i miss them.

    mahalos

    today’s musings………

gigi….darn you did it again. do not reveal the score on this forum in consideration of others who like to watch the results/taping later.

bigwave dave….funny, i instantly thought that too. i am sure he would have some teammates who would volunteer. haha.

pono…..hmmm. we just named the black labrador puppy, “pono” and he sports a green collar of course. i wonder if one of those stickers would stay on his fur?

    B,

The new PPV rates were written about in the Advertiser last weekend.

    $380 for previous subscribers

  86. Kekoa July 5, 2008 11:11 am

…and for all of my Tsaiko Cousins, a gentle reminder.

As with any event, there are costs involved. When we planned the blog bash, it was with just under a month away. The date had escaped the original party planners, and I asked if I could step in and pick up where they left off.

Thank goodness for hard charging Stretch for his stepping up when I asked for his help in handling the financial accounting. His ability to organize a method of payment that would make it so easy for people to RSVP and pre-pay was brilliant. What made things a bit gray was the *special guests.*

Not everyone made the effort to consider paying for the invited guests that they invited, and either paying for them, or collecting from them and turning the money over to Stretch. So that is why the system faltered. Al, had a similar experience as well recently. Their good intentions sometimes fell short of expectations. These are the good folks among us who just suck it up and quietly pay the shortage, because they want everyone to enjoy, albeit at their expense.

We’ll be ok as the ship rights itself this week and final payment comes trickling in, but for future events, please be considerate of anyone who is put in charge of funding our good times, by paying on time or early for you and yours.

Let’s make it a priority to be mindful of this very important part of our functions from now on. As Lex Brodie always used to say…THANK YOU, VERY MUCH. (Jason, ask uncle Al who Lex was).

Neighbors have started their grill and I still have to decide what to have for my snack. Decisions, decisions.

How is everyone on this slow and lazy Saturday?

    Happy Saturday everyone!!

Looking forward to seeing my peeps from UHS again tonight.

Don’t know why, but this just popped into my head – I usually think of it during the season. Could the AD make it recommended/mandatory for all student athletes to get a flu shot every year? I know the Student Health Center gives them for a reduced price. Seems like every year at least one of the teams has an outbreak of something. Just a thought.

  116. Stephen Tsai July 5, 2008 1:46 pm

this function is set up that everyone pays their own way.

btw, who are the “official” invited guests and who is supposed to pay for them?

A-House family is, as most of the regular group of folks who attend all or most of the functions, paid in full. No intent to offend anyone, only a gentle reminder to be mindful of the logistical costs of these productions, and an open discussion of our operation. You are correct, and we did have a plan to pay for the guests, but there were hidden costs beyond our control that factored in later that hindered our plans, thus undermining our budget excess as planned.

The complete list has been kept by Stretch for each day. He can supply you with a list if you would like to see how he had it organized. We simply wanted a firm way of tracking everyone who is coming, and who they were invited by. Please see me at the event for a full explanation of the problems we encountered.

As people check in at the entrance manned by your daughter and her twin, they will be checked off that Master list, given their name tag and sign in. This is the best system we could come up with on short notice. If you recall, at our smaller gatherings, we all just show up and the money got collected helter skelter because it was only 25 or 30 people. Now that our numbers are growing, we had to have something in place.

As you know, we are not set up as a real club or any type of Hui. Not a non-profit with all the audit requirements, etc. This was just us, trying to keep it simple and fair for everyone, without the pilikia. We decided to keep historicals so that when and if we ever did something as large as this or larger, we have a pay system in place. We learned a lesson, and we are dealing with it to improve it for next time.

If you or any of the Tsaiko Ohana have some positive input to help us in this area, by all means please contact stretch as this is his kuleana. The other members of the group besides myself, were, BG, Wreck, Koakane, James, D-1, A-Joe’s, and Gigi. They have all worked long and hard on putting this event on, and need everyone’s cooperation. Mahalo to those who have already shown their support.

Got to get on the road to pick up Liz at the airport. I’ll check in for your response later.

One area that isn’t a concern is the offensive line, which should be sturdy in 2008, as the unit as a whole is more experienced. They lose First-Team All-American LG Hercules Satele and starting RG Larry Sauafea. However, First-Team All-WAC C John Estes returns, along with LG Keith AhSoon.

Only response is that if I invited a guest, I would expect to pay for that person as soon as possible.

I could not, in good conscious, ask other Tsaikos to assist with paying the expense.

So, if ST is paying for all the “special” people, and Kekaula, Takai, and Leahey are paying their own way, who are we paying for? I have no problem contributing to the cost of the “special guests” of the committee.

  167. BG July 5, 2008 3:36 pm

I think Kekoa went to the airport to pick up LizK, so I’ll step in as the assistant in charge of making the blog party happen and explain some of the happenings.

Straight up (from my perspective anyway), this is what has happened. I was part of the initial meeting to plan the party after accepting an invitation from Gigi. After the meeting, a few planning things were done like checking different sites and looking at possible dates. Things seemed to be put on hold after word came out that things were going to be handled by JD…location, wine-tasting, etc. The excitement of the Spring game also jumped out in front too.

Finally, about a month ago, Kekoa started asking question about the party and no one had answers. Like the Tsaiko he is, he stepped up to fill the gap. He organized a group and assigned key responsibilities to people and asked them to recruit people to assist. Gigi was at the initial meeting, but was not assigned a key task. Not everyone there was assigned such a task because there were more people than tasks. However, everyone could assist in the project in some capacity.

I think everyone realizes that one month is not enough time to plan an activity of this magnitude. It would be a challange if I were back on active duty and had all my sergeants scurrying around to get things done. Here, we have so very little structure. We know who the boss man is…beyond that…??? We don’t have daily face to face contact. No one gets paid to do stuff. We don’t have a conference room to meet in. Everything is being done on the fly. People have day jobs.

So, how does it get done? It gets done because there are folks who believe in what they are doing. They follow in the same footsteps of Rich and the UNLV tickets, or Pomai and the SB bracelets, or the iTouch. It doesn’t get done because someone “owns it”. Rather, it’s because everyone feels like they own “it”. I feel privileged to work with people like this. I’d work with them any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

  169. BG July 5, 2008 3:58 pm

    A-House

I don’t believe that the difficulty lies in guests not paying. Here we are, four days from the party and (due to the short fuse in planning) the guest list is/was still in flux. By now, we can’t be saying I THINK they’re coming. We can’t be saying “they’re going to pay”. You know and I know that it should be “Yes, they are/aren’t coming”, and “they’ve paid already”.

But, A-House, we also know that the party will turn out great. Then, we’ll done a first rate AAR and make the next one even better. No worries.

  170. wafan July 5, 2008 3:58 pm

Probably poking my nose where it does not belong. But, I am sure everyone appreciates what the planning committee has done and is doing for the event. As usual, there are people who deem it their responsibility to stiff the committee, not follow-through, believe their personal time schedule supercedes the need of the many, or just complain. Sadly, there is nothing that can be done with those kinds of people except to eventually leave them behind. I do not believe, though, that is the Tsai-ko Way.

There will be changes next time. Apparently, there must be.

Seems those who complain the most but do little to nothing to help solve the problems need to examine their motives, their expectations, and their level of commitment.

    Sorry for the message.

DPK, Leahey did not pay and stay for dinner at our 1st anniversary bash. When food was served, he walked out.

Well, maybe he had somewhere else to go, but I really thought that was strange.

Another person who did that was Jeff Reinebold, who also left.
    _______________________________________________________________

    gigi-
Leahey did have somewhere else to go that night. Bible Study. He told me so before he left. On another occasion, myself, pride and Ajoe joined he, Kekaula, Tsai, Kanoa, and Felipe for breakfast. Leahey took care of the tab. “LEAHEY WOULD PAY”. 🙂

  174. gigi-hawaii © July 5, 2008 4:10 pm

haha, OK, DPK, but are you SURE you all didn’t go to the restroom and leave Leahey behind to pay?

  175. Jason July 5, 2008 4:12 pm

gigi, are you saying you’ve done that before? Shame on you!

  176. gigi-hawaii © July 5, 2008 4:15 pm

What, Jason? I sometimes leave to go to the restroom and have hubby pay for both of us. I rarely eat out with friends, but when I do, we split the tab or I treat.

  177. A-House July 5, 2008 4:17 pm

    BG:

No can make lunch next week and week after that – will call you later to set up a lunch.

  178. Jason July 5, 2008 4:17 pm

Tsk tsk, leaving hubby to pay the check. 😉

  179. gigi-hawaii © July 5, 2008 4:19 pm

Jason, word to the wise: Women expect the guy to treat them — or at least women of my generation.

  180. Jason July 5, 2008 4:23 pm

Indeed, that’s true. The history books state that when gigi was dating George Washington, the British had just levied a huge tax. He was short on cash, so gigi dumped him.

  181. wafan July 5, 2008 4:25 pm

So that would make GG around two and a half centuries old?

  182. gigi-hawaii © July 5, 2008 4:28 pm

I have a hunch that most women are drawn to sweet, rich, and handsome men. Unbeatable combination in a man. Wow!

  183. chawan_cut July 5, 2008 4:43 pm

    darn,
    what am i missing???

  184. Da Punchbowl Kid July 5, 2008 4:44 pm

    gigi dahling-
If you don’t believe me, ask one of the guys who were there. “LEAHEY WOULD PAY”. gigi would sneak into the bathroom. 😆

  185. Da Punchbowl Kid July 5, 2008 4:45 pm

What about fat, old, and poor?

  186. gigi-hawaii © July 5, 2008 4:46 pm

DPK, like I said, I rarely meet friends for lunch. Anyway, I think it’s great papa L treated everyone. Makes me respect him even more.

  187. stacyj July 5, 2008 4:47 pm

Gigi, my dear, there is more to a man than his riches and his looks.

I don’t think women of this generation are that into the man/woman paying. My husband and I just went out on a date this week and I took care of the bill.

I also have a friend who is in the dating word right now and she actually thinks it is “ugly” of a woman to expect a man to always pay for dates. I would guess guys like it when a woman treats them every once in a while and doesn’t expect everything given to her on a silver platter.

    BTW, hi everyone!

  188. gigi-hawaii © July 5, 2008 4:48 pm

I was just thinking how rare it is to find a sweet, rich, and handsome man. Look around you. Most married men don’t have ALL of those attributes.

On the other hand, most women don’t look like Marilyn Monroe, either!

  189. stacyj July 5, 2008 4:50 pm

I am sure I’m missing something in the discussion but from what I gather, the bottom line is this, Stretch has footed the bill for this big event and nobody wants to see him stuck paying more than his share for the party. SO, please, pay up.

Regarding planning a big event in such short time. When is it too early to get started for next year? Maybe set the date, find the venue and start making decisions come the end of Spring ball.

  190. gigi-hawaii © July 5, 2008 4:51 pm

Men make so much MORE than women so it would be nice if they paid the tab.

  191. 99club July 5, 2008 4:52 pm

Something I just noticed about the Boise St. – Hawaii game. Both teams are playing only 6 days after their last game. But I think we have a slight edge since they are coming back from playing So. Miss. and they also head out on the road to San Jose St. the following week. If you have to play Boise at their place, that’s the kind of situation you would hope for, IMHO.

And one addah ‘ting. How come no one ‘jes wear ‘da yellow glasses to make ‘da turf look green, eh?

  192. stacyj July 5, 2008 4:53 pm

    Stretch, where are you????

Why you not going to the alum stuff? Tired of your picture being all over the internet?

  193. stacyj July 5, 2008 4:57 pm

Okay Gigi, I gotta address this one. “Men make so much MORE than women.” Before I had kids, I made way more money than my husband. It all depends on what you do. When I worked for the State, yeah, my husband made more. When I began working for a private law firm, I smashed him.

I have a friend who is a nurse. She made over $90K last year with overtime. I don’t know about you but I know a lot of men who do not earn that kind of money.

Times have changed and there are many women in higher paying jobs these days.

  194. jm2375 July 5, 2008 4:58 pm

sure it makes it a little easier, but does it make you happy?
can it smile at you, cheer you up and put a smile on your face? can it give you a hug when you’re feeling down?

ok, enough from me, i think its past my bedtime.

    JM2375:

We’ve been in the Enchanted Lake area (interior of Keolu Drive) since 1998. We’re renting one of the original Joe Pao houses built back in 1959 from the original owners – well, their kids now own it since the parents have long since passed away. I never dreamed that we’d still be living here. Not since I left home at the age of 14 have I lived anywhere this long.

Although we built the redwood fence shortly after we moved in, just about everything else is the same as when they were small kids although we did replace a toilet about six years ago along with the stove, fridge and hot water heater the year before that. Most likely, we’ll leave the appliances behind when we move out.

Perhaps we can meet for coffee and conversation somewhere nearby. Do you like to bowl? Maybe we can hit the Pali Lanes before Kaneohe Ranch tears it down. I’m not sure how well I can do – I’m still dealing with the aftermath of a broken shoulder and will probably start off with a kid’s bowling ball for a few games.

A BIG HAND FOR OUR COACHES!!!!!

Coaches Cal Lee, Alex Gerke, and their boss Coach McMackin deserve alot of praise.

They came to the big island today with their friends – coaches from Leilehua and Mililani, helping out. I don’t have a complete list of the coaches because I wasn’t there this morning, only got to see them starting around 2 pm. But they were there and the kids and their parents were loving it, loving it, loving it.

They weren’t in Hilo. They weren’t in Kona. They were in a little town called
Honokaa. With about 140 high schoolers, some big, some small, but from all over the island and all were there and full of enthusiasm. Made me well up with pride, no kidding. I speak for alot of parents and grandparents; we’re really grateful that the coaches took the time to come way way way out of their way.

I mean, Coach McMackin is keeping his word. And he isn’t sending scrub coaches, and his boys aren’t next to the golf greens. They are among the real people.

My hat is off to you, coaches. Really!!!!!! REPRESENT.

    GO WARRIORS!!!!!

  247. Da Punchbowl Kid July 5, 2008 7:14 pm

  250. bighilofan2 July 5, 2008 7:18 pm

I mean, I didn’t see Mack, but Cal Lee and Alex Gerke were there. Mr. Gerke is a hulk, no shirt, plenty raw meat. And barks big time. The kids and parents were loving it this afternoon. Again, a big mahalo from the big island, Cal. THANK YOU!!!

You can do it too, MauiMom. i mean, I didn’t know they were coming, they didn’t tell me, they just showed up, but you could tell there was preplanning that went on.

    GO WARRIORS!!!!

I’m glad to hear about the coaches going that clinic in Honokaa! I’m sure that it was great for the kids, for their parents, and will make tons of even-more-loyal Warrior fans…and hopefully some future Warriors!

I understand your point about how they were in Honokaa instead of Hilo or Kona. Pretty cool! I wonder if some of the grandchildren of my Mom’s classmates (Lapahoehoe class of 1954) were there. I should ask my Mom to ask around to get some into.

Congratulations to Texas, Notre Dame…and North Dakota State? Given the disparity in resources, North Dakota State deserves to get some major attention for their success with their student athletes!

Texas led the nation in 2007-08 with 10 Academic All-America selections on teams selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

North Dakota State and Notre Dame tied for second with eight All-Americans, one more than Duke.

  263. Stephen Tsai July 5, 2008 9:29 pm

    Chawan:
Doesn’t look like there will be union-friendly videos in the near future. The union’s position is not to produce any more videos until a fair offer is made. And, yes, management knows the importance of videos. This year, a photo editor (who does not shoot videos or photos) received a big award for the paper’s success in videos. It actually was an award that single-handedly should have gone to Princess Leila, who garnered the most views. When that was pointed out, the editor pouted, complaining that his “achievement” was overshadowed.
They’ve already tried to coax some people into becoming non-union videographers.
For whatever reasaon, KGMB, which runs a union shop, supplies videos that the paper posts online.
And that’s today’s union news. Let’s see how long it takes for somebody to get SMU’d.

  264. stacyj July 5, 2008 9:36 pm

Hey, it went through! I finally got my wireless router to work, and I made that last post from my iPod touch.

    Good evening gang!

Just got back from my alumni dinner. STRETCH, WHERE WERE YOU?!!! 😡

Great to see my friends again. I can’t believe one of my classmates is now a grandpa. Talk about feeling old. 😯

Rich Tomey (son of you know who) attended the dinner tonight. Didn’t realize he was an alum. Looks like his Dad.

OK back to lurking. Have a great evening.

    News Flash!

    The Twins Achieve Success!!

Both are at Aaron’s and were totally successful in getting pictures taken with Colt and having him sign UHfan808 football.

Twins said it’s not crowded, there’s other players as well and all are totally accessible and friendly to talk with.

Lucky buggahz! They having the time of their lives!

  271. Stephen Tsai July 5, 2008 10:45 pm

    Hey, the Twins called.
They’re at Aaron’s. They got to say hi to Colt, and UHfan808 finally got her football autographed by him.
They also said Davone Bess and Ryan Grice-Mullins are there.
Blaze Soares is due there later.
I guess the Twins might not be making rehearsals at Kekoa’s tomorrow.

  272. Barry Markowitz July 5, 2008 10:46 pm

Jason, you are now an Ipod Touchy feely kine guy. Be nice to KGMB, they are really good people (as are most of the TV stations staff). I think KGMB, with Liz Chun’s commitment, did a great job with the June Jone’s Show in covering last year’s magic season. Tiser photo editor’s don’t control corporate policies, which is why my breaking news images haven’t appeared there in over 8 years. I feel sorry for the shaky future all strictly newspaper employees may face…which probably has an affect on the union contract negotiations.

  273. jm2375 July 5, 2008 10:47 pm

Oh, BTW, the closest beach to Washington DC is a 3 hour drive on a good day (4-5 hrs on Friday evening). And the water is cooooold.

  274. Jason July 5, 2008 10:52 pm

Barry: Well, I usually don’t watch KGMB anyways. It’s just not that good. I stick to KITV for my news.

Haha, I guess the girls are having fun.

  275. addahknowjoe July 5, 2008 10:54 pm

jm2375- Any surf to speak of to go with that cold water?

  276. Barry Markowitz July 5, 2008 11:00 pm

Jason, I won’t take it personally, I supply both KGMB and KITV with breaking news. Maybe you like KITV better because you and Kekaula are tight bruddahs.

A/joe – nope. Gotta go to NC for surf. The water was way too cold for this thin-skinned Hawaii girl, even when I was in my college days. BTW, no public outdoor showers to speak of. Maybe 1 or 2 for the whole 3 mile beach. We were camping one time and had to drive home without a shower. Yeeeeech.

  281. Stretch July 5, 2008 11:49 pm

jm2375 – i stopped but the party but since I don’t know what you look like, I wasn’t able to find you and introduce myself.

  282. jm2375 July 5, 2008 11:57 pm

    Stretch,

Oh shoots. We were sitting across from the end of the fuud table. Had a good time talking with Miss Kunioka, the former cafeteria manager. Man, she must be in her 80s by now. Tiny Japanese woman who could keep everybody in line, even the big football players like Konishiki. 🙂
