Colt: ‘I’m lucky’

Colt Brennan, who was seriously injured in a two-car accident in November, said he expects to resume working out as early as next week.

Brennan said he has “no vivid memory” of the Big Island accident. He said he “woke up” in The Queen’s Medical Center and eventually learned “my life had changed.” He said all he knows of the accident is through news reports and other people’s accounts. Brennan suffered a broken left clavicle, which required surgery, a fractured eye socket and rib injuries.

“I want to thank the doctors and the paramedics and nurses,” he said. “They were great to me. … Of all the things that happened, from head to toe … I’m lucky.”

Practices makes … a nice paycheck.

Former UH linebacker Brashton Satele earns $5,000 a week being on the New York Jets’ practice squad during the playoffs, according to agent Kenny Zuckerman.

Good to hear about Colt. Whenever he’s ready to move back to Hawaii for good, he can pretty much write his own ticket. NFL or not, he’s got a bright future.

Get well wishes to Colt, Shakti & Dr. Wang.

    Go Brashton!

    FYI

    1/6/11

The Big Island woman who was injured in a Nov. 19 crash in North Kona involving former University of Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan has filed a lawsuit.

According to West Hawaii Today, Theresa Wang’s lawyer filed the suit against 27-year-old Shakti Stream of Kailua-Kona in state court on Dec. 30. It seeks special and general damages that could exceed $150,000.

Police say Wang’s car apparently was struck head-on by an SUV driven by Stream, Brennan’s girlfriend.

Brennan and Stream were treated and released in about a week.

However, the 47-year-old Wang suffered life-threatening injuries and is now in a Denver rehabilitation hospital that specializes in brain and spinal cord injuries.

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Great news about Colt! Best wishes to him. Hope some team gives him a chance to show what he’s got.

Think ST got the loudest ovation for his “kill”. The players had fun. At different points, there were about 10 players per side, Umlauft had a head “bump”, Nejc hit one off his elbow, Walker tried to “help” the other side and Dyer threw up a toss higher than Yuval’s, but alas, the serve went into the net and 3 guys just ran in and triple blocked.

Wanted to see ST play more. 😀

Da Screechers were dressed as Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum. j/k. They will be in their element starting Thursday!

  14. Matt January 9, 2011 10:10 am

Good for Brashton. I guess we should cheer for the Jets to beat the Patriots so Brashton can continue to rake in the dough.

Wonder how many weeks a player gets paid on the practice squad in a season, from start to finish?? my thinking along those lines,(48 wks.x $5000=$240,000).

  19. SteveM January 9, 2011 10:44 am

    Good morning everyone!

Good luck and best wishes to Colt!

  20. mctruck January 9, 2011 10:47 am

    Speedy recovery, Dr. Wang.

Likewise, for Colt and ms. Stream.

  21. josh January 9, 2011 10:50 am

Loved the autograph session, Josh Walker and Jonas Umlauft are very nice guys.

Next season they should add a table where you can join the men’s volleyball booster club, I had a friend there that was interested in joining.

  22. jm2375 January 9, 2011 11:02 am

josh – #21 – booster club membership – the form is on hawaiiathletics.com

  23. wafan January 9, 2011 11:26 am

While it is nice to have the application on-line I would rather have cash, cheque, or credit/debit card approval in hand. Having a membership table at the event might have garnered a few new members last night because of emotions.

Same thing as selling bowl tickets right after the invitation is accepted, or season tickets right after winning the championship game.

UH needs to get proactive and act on the emotions of the public rather than waiting for whatever reason. Heck, they have all year to plan and somethings are annual events that just require a little tweaking.

  24. Ralph January 9, 2011 11:30 am

what, we didn’t hear PowderPuff! Must have been the score, we were already dejected and numb.

Our team looks as though they were moving in slow motion in the second half. All four teams in the WAC out quick us, leading to a rebound and loose ball possession advantage, also their quickness gave them a lot of open looks and unfortunately for us they hit them.

  25. koakane January 9, 2011 11:37 am

mahalo for dat Ralph thought I was watching some other game.

  26. koakane January 9, 2011 11:39 am

what you saying Willis um Wafan.

    preaching to da choir again

  27. Bowwar January 9, 2011 11:57 am

Really didn’t like last night’s UH men’s basketball game…Our guys played without any passion at all.

  28. Ralph January 9, 2011 12:07 pm

K State wbb is playing Oklahoma State before 7K fans on a Sunday afternoon Why and why can’t we have such a following for at least our men’s bb team. Both women teams are predicted to finish 8 or 9th in conference, not good, but game is played and the fans needed to be there.

The K State AD and marketing people stepped up, it’s Military day promotion, they honored the Military troops from Fort Riley and they had Fox Sports interview the commander.

UH needs to promote military day for all sports, men and women, and honor our troops. It’s a good project and adds to the atmosphere at the game. Why have 6K empty seats at the SSC last night, more for the women’s game. Same goes for men vb and baseball. If JD is hoping to sell the ticket to fill the arena and stadium he has a long wait on his hands. Penny counters got to be patient.

  29. josh January 9, 2011 12:16 pm

hard to explain why the basketball team can’t score in the second half. Everyone around me was frustrated, lots of my friends won’t be back for more games, unfortunately.

  30. wafan January 9, 2011 12:18 pm

    KK . . .

I know. But, I also know JD, et al, read the WB. Maybe they might catch a clue? And actually implement the idea.

Seems odd UH is reluctant to “give away” tickets at a discount to honor the military or other youth sports groups. Not as if they were going to sell the tickets anyhow.

  31. Ralph January 9, 2011 12:26 pm

Foxs Sports up dated the attendance at K State wbb to 9K. K State won by 18 points, 9-0 at home this season, 11-3 overall. Non conference schedule was very weak, the Big 12 season started this weekend.

  32. Derek January 9, 2011 12:29 pm

Went to the game last night. It was painful to watch the second half. However, today is a nice day and the sun is shining so I’m happy. We have to hope that things will get better, but it would have to be real soon. With a road trip on tap, it would behoove the team win at least a split. The main problem I see is that the team is not shooting the ball as well as earlier in the season and the 3 pt. percentage has gone down quite a bit.

  33. jm2375 January 9, 2011 12:38 pm

    EARTHQUAKE! 😀

  34. josh January 9, 2011 12:42 pm

Next year’s volleyfest hopefully won’t start an hour late. Most fans left because of the time.

I hope they introduce the players one by one and have them wave to the crowd, not introduce them as they are all warming up.

Also it would be fun if the warriors did the haka , like the basketball and football team.

  35. A-House January 9, 2011 12:44 pm

    Garret:

your #131 from previous post – you think that most Hawaii football players will qualify academically for Stanford?

    If they do, that’s GREAT!!!!!!!!!

  36. Ralph January 9, 2011 12:52 pm

UH scored 15 and 24 second half points against Idaho and Boise State respectively, but I didn’t see an over whelming defense by those teams to stifle UH. What I saw was a lack of spacing and movement by the UH, lots of standing around and slow runs that made defensing them a lot easier and contesting each and every shot UH attempted.

Whereas the opponents had wide open looks and made a number of those shots uncontested, add the drib drive to the hoop without a lot of pressure or back side help and it became an unbearable long night.

  37. jm2375 January 9, 2011 12:55 pm

josh – #34 – hopefully, next year, they won’t put at the tail end of a double header. It would have started around 9:45ish anyway, since the bb game was scheduled to start at 7:30.

I’m wondering who took the player pictures this year. They look like driver’s license pictures. The girls (15 yr olds) were lamenting that there weren’t any “hot” guys on the team this year. They were surprised when they saw them last night.

UHAD – take better pictures of the players and start sending them out to the high schools. They might have to start taking the players out in laundry carts again. 😆

  38. Ralph January 9, 2011 12:55 pm

men vb starts Jan 13, tournament time, some thing to look forward to as the men and women bb hit the road.

  39. A-House January 9, 2011 12:56 pm

    Garret, al, and all others:

I am not asking for Rolo to be replaced. NONE AT ALL!!!

All my posts have been addressing the issue of “play calling” to make ir 1) harder for opponent DC to strategize on how to defend against UH; and 2) making it more enjoyable for all fans who sit in the stadium or use the computer or watch via other means to watch/hear the Warrior games.

Just because Moniz was the “leader” in 2 categories nationally, did it garner any recognition by any sports outlet be it TV or radio or magazines? NO!!!! As a mater of fact, Moniz had better passing status then Cameron or any of the other QBs mentioned nationally by all sports media, BUT it didn’t matter to them when selecting AA players or a consideration for the Heisman or ranking in the top 25!

Speaking of the Heisman, it was mentioned that UH will begin or should have begun the “publicity” for Moniz as a Heisman candidate. Anyone seen anything yet????????

While many will disagree, it was the “coaches” who lost the Colorado, Boise St and Tulsa games – they did not prepare the team well in any category. And, I hope Coach Mack has learned his lesson that 5 days at high altitude is better the 12 hours to get the players acclimated to playing any team in the “high country”. Wonder who his “expert” was?

  40. kawika49 January 9, 2011 1:34 pm

A-house, there are a few 10th Mountain Div. Vets in Hawaii, that could clue in our coaches about altitude training.

  41. d1島 January 9, 2011 1:34 pm

    A-house,

Are you asking for the offense to use some elements of the “spread option” offense like Auburn runs?

  42. Pomai January 9, 2011 1:56 pm

A-House got me curious about us running vs passing

    2010 – Passing Attempts 618 – Rushing Attempts 308

I think overall we ran enough, I think what A-House is saying that he would like to see Moniz roll out to his right or left with the option to throw or run rather than always a stay in the pocket or stepping up?

  43. kawika49 January 9, 2011 2:06 pm

Hope Colt, can get in shape quick. Also hope that all involved heal.

  44. Liquid vitamin January 9, 2011 2:20 pm

Wow!, this was a real quality post. In theory I’d like to write like this too – taking time and real effort to make a good article… but what can I say… I keep putting it off and never seem to get something done

  45. d1島 January 9, 2011 2:22 pm

No question that I hope he heals from his injuries.

That said, with broken bones to heal and having suffered another concussion, this setback may have put Colt’s career into “miracle” territory.

  46. trex 700 January 9, 2011 2:23 pm

He,This is a great and usefull blog.Keep up the good work.

  47. kawika49 January 9, 2011 2:33 pm

There are broken bones and fractures. Many of us have suffered broken bones and never realized it. Having had severe injuries, ironically; the more severe ones healed the fastest and got me back to duty. It all depends on the individuals ability to heal.

  48. A-House January 9, 2011 2:36 pm

    Pomai:

#42 – BINGO!! – that would be a good start which would put more pressure on the on rushing Dline and freeze the LBs – also, keep the DBs more honest to respect the “run”.

This can then lead to other plays, play option or run or pass, as a continuation of the play calling established by Rolo – this was mentioned in an early post.

Because Tulsa diagnosed UH offensive mend set, it was much easier to defned and disguise their actual defensive schemes by the DBs as we witnessed on 12/24/10 – they started with the zone or man and just before or as the ball was snapped, they changed into the opposite – apparently Coach Aranda did not pick this up or had difficulty in getting the message to position coaches or receiver coach could not translate this message to the receivers or the receivers failed to listen/execute or the receivers themselves were not aware of what was happening. For the receivers, what did you see and what transpired? Was this info transmitted to Miano and the DC upstairs? Did the DC see the same? If no, why? If yes, what “changes”, if any, were made to counter act the opponents scheme?

IIRC, all the “worst” pass defense teams UH faced in 2010 had their best game against UH – why? can UH coaches review those games, learn lessons, and teach them to the receivers in 2011?

  49. Garret January 9, 2011 2:51 pm

    A-House,

I *am* in favor of having UH move the pocket. Having the QB roll to the left or right changes the blocking scheme and forces the DL to adjust, instead of having the QB in the same spot every time. If that is the type of adjustment that would make you happy, that would open up a lot of options for the offense and UH would take advantage of the mobility of Moniz (and one soon-to-be sophomore QB has great mobility also).

Moving the pocket is also a way to help give the QB some time if the OL is having trouble blocking the DL.

  50. A-House January 9, 2011 2:51 pm

    d1:

smart football – after reading the first paragraph, my impression was “principles and strategy”.

how a coach and/or player employs that “principle and/or strategy” will be different because who the coaches are and what scheme/system they run; also how it is taught to the players may make a difference. Will they understand the “principle or strategy”?

It is better to teach principles than “situations”.

  51. Garret January 9, 2011 2:57 pm

    A-House,

Not all the local athletes would qualify for Stanford, of course, but a lot would (especially those from the private schools who take a lot more college prep classes than the minimum needed to graduate) since the admission standard at Stanford is lower for athletes. The athletes get great individualized tutoring and the school is really set up well to make sure they keep up with classes.

I took some classes at Stanford where I knew that the football players did not miss a class unless they were on a road trip…it was hard to miss them in the classroom! The professors and students would have let the coaches know immediately if a student cut class.

One thing that Stanford has that I wish UH had was TV recording capabilities in many classrooms. So, most classes are taped and broadcast to the dorms (can be DVR’d by the students) and the lectures are available anytime in the libraries. Athletes on a road trip can watch the lecture when they get back…in fact, if they have internet access while the lecture is going on they may be able to watch the lecture live and even ask questions during the lecture by calling a number via their cell phones. Lectures are archived so it is possible for athletes to catch up with lectures while they are waiting at an airport or in their hotel room.

  52. A-House January 9, 2011 2:59 pm

    Garret:

My happiness, when it comes to UH, is for the team to win games and be recognized for their effort: football, basketball, volleyball, etc. My personal satisfaction will be the accolades heaped on the players and coaches.

For the players, unless they quit, it means 4 years at the same school. Conversely, for coaches, it may bring “offers” that may be “too good to refuse” and move on thus creating a “situation” where the entire team is affected. Not to mention who the replacement will be and how well this person will work with the other coaches and ultimately the players.

  53. Garret January 9, 2011 2:59 pm

Wonder how many weeks a player gets paid on the practice squad in a season, from start to finish?? my thinking along those lines,(48 wks.x $5000=$240,000).

    mctruck,

The NFL only pays for the 17 weeks of the regular season, so $5k x 17 = $85k. Each week of the playoffs is a HUGE bonus, since they get 1/17 of the pay for the entire season.

I actually think that the pay is $5200, not $5000, but that is a minor point.

  54. vimax January 9, 2011 3:02 pm

Hello just thought i would tell you something.. This is twice now i’ve landed on your blog in the last 3 days hunting for totally unrelated things. Spooky or what? sbbhs2011

  55. Garret January 9, 2011 3:05 pm

    A-House,

My biggest worry for UH’s success, is that the “haves” are getting FAR more money than the schools like UH…and the gap is growing.

This season, UH will get about $3 million from TV. Pac-10 schools will get about $6 million from TV. The difference is significant, but not horrible…though there is no doubt that Pac-10 schools have much better facilities.

In 2 years, UH will get less from TV if PPV is lost, maybe something like the $1.3 million that MWC schools get now. Pac-12 schools are projected to get $15 million to $20 million per school. That is a HUGE difference! SEC schools will get about $20 million per year from TV, Big 10 schools will get about $30 million per year from TV, Big 12 schools will get about $15 million per year from TV plus their local TV contracts (Texas will get $32 million per year from TV because ESPN is their “local” TV channel).

When we have been looking at $3 million vs. $6 million for TV between UH and Pac-10 schools, we have a difference but it can be overcome. When we look at $1.3 million for UH and $20 million for other schools…that is a completely different deal.

  56. A-House January 9, 2011 3:06 pm

    Garret:

your #51 – wonder how much it would take for UH to have such a system in place for ALL classes? – I would venture to say $10-25 million or more?

Would this be more worthy of an expenditure than spending $10 million or more on “capital improvement projects?” ie, renovating Gartley Hall. Last I heard, the CIP amounted to over $548 million.

  57. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc January 9, 2011 3:07 pm

Spent a frustrating five-plus hours at The Stan last night so we really appreciated the Volley Fest.

A quick reminder – Three spring semester sports will be starting up over the next five weeks so let’s make sure that we are there for them.

NON-SPORTS TOPIC!!! Skip over if you don’t want to read this.

    FORESTS FOR WATER AND WETLANDS

FOURTH ANNUAL RAMSAR WORLD WETLANDS DAY

    Sponsored by Ho`olaulima Ia Kawainui

A consortium of environmental & cultural non-profits, local businesses, and the Department of Land and Natural Resources

    9 am – 1:30 pm

    SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 2011

Windward YMCA & Faith Baptist (shared) Campus

    1200 – 1230 Kailua Road

As the overall coordinator for the Fourth Annual Ramsar World Wetlands Day here in Hawai`i, I extend an invitation to you, your family & friends, and a for-profit or non-profit organization you support to join Ho`olaulima Ia Kawainui, a consortium of environmental & cultural non-profits, local businesses & public agencies in celebrating the designation of Kawainui Marsh & Hamakua Marsh as a Wetlands of International Importance.

The event has been designed to provide attendees with a wide range of family-friendly environmental & cultural activities for folks of all ages, Hawaiian and Western games for children & teens, a Talk Story session with folks sharing their memories of what it was like living inWindward O`ahu prior to, during & immediately following World War Two, food sales, live entertainment, a local plant sale, artists’ displays, and FREE guided tours by bus & on foot exploring Kawainui Marsh.& Hamakua Marsh.

Although state & county elected & administrative officials are expected to attend, I promise you that there will be no boring speeches by the Big Muckamuckas.

TWO of the FIVE WAYS to take part!!

    1. Sign up to be an exhibitor at the event itself. There’s no charge, but we do ask that you make your exhibit lively and interactive rather than passive with just pictures and handouts.

    There are no geographical limitations.

Contact me by e-mail. See below.

    2. The second way to get involved is to volunteer to help with the event itself. All tasks except one will be on February 5th and either the specific activity is time-limited or there will be shifts set up. Community service credit for students will be available plus all volunteers will receive a free lunch and a gift certificate.

The one pre-event task I really, really need help with requires strong Social Media geek skills. I am looking for someone to work with me to create a quality 4 to 5 minute video which can be streamed on a website, sent out via e-mail, and even posted on various social media sites such as YouTube and Facebook.

The position we’re looking to fill is someone with strong video production skills – camera, audio & editing. I’ll be writing the script, making the arrangements for on-camera appearances, and getting the various permissions to do the on-site shooting. Shooting and editing will take about 15 hours all totaled.

The stipend for this would be $300 plus community service credits if needed, a gift certificate from a local business and a voucher for lunch from one of the food vendors at the event.

For more information, visit our organizational website – click my name above or send me at e-mail to info at waa dash hawaii dot org.

  58. A-House January 9, 2011 3:15 pm

    Garret:

your #55 – it would appear that UH agve up ALL or nearly all of the K-5 tv $$ AND had to pay travel subsidies to gain entrance to the MWC.

Hope it will be worth it!

I say again, with great planning and execution, UH can be the “leader” within the MWC for TV and game attendance income thus INCREASING its value and maybe gain more “bargining” power in the future.

As someone mentioned last evening, if UH played the right marketing/merchandising angle by encouraging Far East and Down under media to “spot light” athletes from that area – could bring in $$ for attendance and TV; maybe, even tour groups to watch the athlete at an event; maybe, even the “golden touch” to recruiting for all UH sports.

  59. mctruck January 9, 2011 3:16 pm

    Garret, thanks for ur #53.

  60. Garret January 9, 2011 3:17 pm

Nonrevenue sports will be hurt even more severely if the Pac-12 gets their network running. Right now, Hawaii homes can see most UH games in the major nonrevenue sports (basketball, softball, baseball, volleyball). If the Pac-12 channel is set up like the Big 10 network (the Pac-12 hired the guy who set up the Big 10 TV network to set up their network), then EVERY game will be able to be seen *in HD* anywhere in the country. This even includes sports like soccer and swimming that normally are never seen on TV.

The Big 10 volleyball/softball/etc. coaches have been very happy with their Big 10 Network, saying that it brought their recruiting up to a level they never had before. A Pac-12 coach would be able to go into a home in Hawaii and tell the athlete’s parents that they could see EVERY game their kid plays IN HD if they pay for the sports pack from their cable or satellite TV provider (about $6 per month, much cheaper than PPV).

In other words, Pac-12 schools will be on TV more in *Hawaii* than UH will. Some UH games are only available via PPV, and some road games are only available via the sports pack or via streaming video. For some sports (not talking about football or men’s basketball), road games aren’t available often and other sports (soccer, etc.) aren’t seen much at all.

Is every softball road game on TV? Are any in HD? A Big 10 coach can tell parents that every game will be in HD, and if the Pac-12 coaches can say the same thing then the recruiting situation for UH (especially for mainland athletes). Having the TV revenue gap go from $3 million to $18 million is a huge thing…but having every game in HD in every sport (and the coaches shows, etc.) is a huge thing for recruiting.

  61. Garret January 9, 2011 3:25 pm

    A-House,

The MWC’s highest earning school for TV money earned the same as their lowest earning school, $1.3 million. They seem to be hoping that UH will help them keep the TV money at that level instead of getting less for each school after BYU/TCU/Utah leave. Even if the MWC maxes out their TV money, UH is looking at $15 million or so *less* than the Pac-12.

BYU is looking at $8 million to $11 million for TV revenue for itself each year. That will open up a huge gap in revenue between them and the MWC.

Wouldn’t UH already have the highest home attendance of any of the teams that will be in the MWC in 2012? UH still is running a deficit, partially due to high travel costs. UH will need to work hard just to make up for the travel subsidies and lower TV revenue…while BYU gets $10 million or so more per year from TV and the Pac-12 schools get $10+ million more than they get now.

UH could sell every ticket in every sport (remember, softball seats are free and sports like soccer/swimming/tennis don’t bring in money) and is would still be $10+ million less in revenue than the Pac-12 will have after their next TV deal. *That* is the reason I was pointing out that UH should appreciate what they have in Rolo, since UH isn’t going to be outbidding any AQ school for a coach…the difference in revenue levels will make the salary differences significant.

…yeah, but now we get HawaiianMiles from Foodland! 🙄

  63. Garret January 9, 2011 3:31 pm

    A-House,

The TV broadcasts of lectures is a great thing for Stanford, but it is paid for by the Silicon Valley companies that pay for their students to take Stanford classes without having to go to the campus. That is such a huge money-maker for them that they make a huge profit by televising and web-streaming their lectures. The only time that the students have to leave their work to go to the campus is for exams.

Unfortunately for UH, there isn’t the large base of companies that can subsidize the lectures like in Silicon Valley. Even though there are a ton of companies in Austin, even UT-Austin found that it was a big money-loser to do the TV lectures so they stopped it after a few years. There is a *huge* cost to run the facility, in addition to the tens of millions to set up the classrooms and build the facilities needed for broadcasting, and UH has greater needs for that type of money (classrooms falling apart, etc.).

  66. iwonderwhytheyhate January 9, 2011 3:47 pm

carry over from last blog on “under center”

can the RnS be pass oriented and still utilize play action is the question since we are using a Pistol formation. It wouldn’t work with the RB to the side of the QB but its different now. Wasn’t the pistol formation created for a spread option offense with a mobile qb and a rb willing to run between tackles? Everything I read seems to point to that.

Mike Leach has utilized play-action even under his air raid offense. Which is a mix of pro-style and the spread RnS (heavier with the RnS side). Someone like Hawaii he took less prime athletes and in his system kept them competitive in the big 12.

I saw pretty much every game when Ron Lee was coordinator and I can’t remember a single time outside of the 5 yards that we went under center.

If play action are solely placed upon having the additional pass blocker TE then I guess we couldn’t do it…then again maybe the whole idea of play action is a hard sell for hawaii because it assumes you have a real running game threat. receivers, line, qb, rb all have to be willing to sell the idea of the run. if we don’t actually run it up the middle that often or successfully it probably wouldn’t trick the D.

    oh wells wutevers.

Seems like all quiet on the Western front! No recruits today. Looking at the Star Advertiser top 10, UH would be happy to get at least 2 of them. Funny, I thought McMackin said he had local recruits but they are not telling which ones because some other schools like the Pac 10 would poach our verbal commits. Well, maybe, just maybe some of the verbal commits are not Top 10 material and maybe we should just chug on down to mamby pamby land and try to get some self-confidence you jack wagon!!!! Tissue? Cry baby!!!!!! There is not crying in Division I football! This is the WAC! Soon to be the Mountain West! This is not P.E. football, and it ain’t intramurals either. I don’t get it. It’s not like it’s a secret as to who are the Top players. I’m a little surprised Hawaii hasn’t at least made an offer to Kaai. After all, his father played for UH. Oh well, Feb. 2 will be coming soon so the the verdict will be in. At this point, it doesn’t seem to be a very strong class coming in but I am still hoping we can get a few surprises down to the wire. Let’s pray!!!!

let’s it this straight, Rolo aint goin anywhere. he isnt in demand. Neither is the offense he coordinates. The run n shoot is dead. That is all he knows, or is attempting to learn. The updated spread sets the tone on O with hurry-up Os at an 80 play or more per game clip. The O recruits athletic QBs who run, dance and pass. Not just QBs that pass and get crushed in the pocket. They employ slots and receivers who skirt the perimeter on counter flow run plays and more importantly, do not set their QB as a fixed target in the pocket.

In 2005, Gus Malzahn, Auburn offensive coordinator was head coaching Springdale High school and Chip Kelly was OC at New Hampshire. They both used the spread to pass n run at breathneck speed. They both used their receivers to run the perimeter and they never allowed their QB to become a predictable pocket-pinyata. Since then, they have risen faster than facebook stock. Malzahn going to Arkansas with his QB, Mitch Mustain, then to Tulsa and now Auburn. Auburn bumped his salary and Malzahn turned down a lucrative Vandy offer. he is still puzzled why he did that. Not bad for a guy who was making $36,500 in 2005. Kelly didnt leave New Hampshire until 2006 and his rise was even more incredible. He has produced 3 outstanding QBs at Oregon including Dixon, Masoli and now Hoston HS phenom, Darron Thomas.

If you want to know why the run n shoot has fallen from grace watch tomorrows game against two teams that use the spread with innovation and out-of-the-box daring….and at a pace the ESPN cameras will be find challenging to cover.

More teams are employing this O that use the spread. eh, you saw Tulsa….or did you bother to note?

Did you watch Troy demolish their opponent?

    Rolo?

    He is expendable.

Unless he can learn to keep pace and start thinking out-of-the-box.

Difficult to do when he is being mentored by the inventor whose O has come and gone.

    go figure,

  87. al January 9, 2011 5:49 pm

pomai…i pointed out that the pass play-run play ratio to ahouse yesterday.

including the fact that we ran for about 5 yds per attempt and 9 yards per attempt passing. the totals looked like 1500 yds running and 5500 yds running for a mere 7000 yds.

yah why aren’t we running more???

and we average only 500 yds pg.

good grief we scored only 554 points this season. jeesh. 40 points per game how pathetic.

our red zone scoring really needs to get up there next year. 81% is just unacceptable. 72 touchdowns yikes.

    come on rolo.

  88. el guapo January 9, 2011 5:50 pm

The Hawaii offense during the Dick Tomey years seemed boring and unimaginative (sorry Pride.), it’s not like I looked forward to seeing Jim Asmus and Frank Natividad punt. However, those were some very successful seasons, attendance was over 40,000 per game, and it was like a social event with a football game thrown in. It isn’t important to have an entertaining and varied offense, it’s important to get the W.

  89. zbm2 January 9, 2011 6:11 pm

I agree to some extent with ahouse. I would like to see more options on offense and I do not mean just running the option. R&S relies too much on one individual. If his game is off or he gets hurt aloha. If he gets knocked out of the season in the first game there goes the season. JJ himself has said it takes a season for the qb to pick up the system. In college football I have always thought that having a quarterback who can also run is the way to go.

  96. cheepono January 9, 2011 7:19 pm

A-house’s concern over our offensive production is very much warranted. Rolo, under the guidance of Mouse has done a decent job at OC in his 1st year at the helm and will hopefully get better in the future with his game time adjustments and planning. Jury is still out but I hope he exceeds all of my expectations.

Al keeps mentioning the gaudy numbers we put up this season and all of the great stats on offense. Our offensive production is amazing against sub-par D1A/AA teams. This is a fact. However, against respectable competition, the production plummets significantly.

Against the better teams this season we scored the following:

    USC – 36

    Army – 31

    Colorado – 13

    Nevada – 27

    Boise St. – 7

**This averages to 22.7 points/game as compared to the season average of 40+ points/game.

Our D gave us the W against Army and Nevada but all those “season average” numbers Al keeps referring to are padded because of the numbers we put up against Charleston Southern (66), UNLV (59), NMSU (59), etc.

Like I already stated earlier, against lesser competition we put up video game numbers, but as a die hard Hawaii fan, I want to see the team be competitive against anybody and everybody. Rolo is a young OC so he has time to learn. No Hawaii fan should be complacent with this past season, especially after the Tulsa massacre.

Are we happy the team exceeded our expectations this season? Hell yeah!

Do we expect improvement next year? Hell yeah!

Is there a lot of room for improvement? Hell yeah!

Am I setting an unreal expectation on the team and coaches? I sure hope not.

After reading the posts the last few days, I’m with A-house. I hope and pray Rolo comes up with something on offense that won’t be made an embarrassment of by any team on our schedule in 2011.

  97. tommui January 9, 2011 7:45 pm

AL re:85 – too old to catch the ambulance now – unless they wheel me into it!

    What’s more important… ?

Getting a top ten Hawaii recruit..

Or getting the best local talents to fill in the positions that need to be filled in even if they are not among the top 10?

  101. Pride. January 9, 2011 7:59 pm

We don’t need the best talent. We want the best talent that we can get. What we need is maximum production out of the whatever talent that we are able to get. Production is the key. If the most talented teams were to win every year, then USC and Texas would be in the championship game on a yearly basis. But the teams that win are the most productive.

    MadeinHawaii

i agree that we should get the players that we need, and hopefully we get them in Hawaii.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

    Cheepono,

The problem I have with your point is that you can make that case to be true about any team who is playing better talent. Oregon only netted 15 or 16 points against Stanford. Auburn just squeaked by many teams. TCU was the only other undefeated and you can see that Wisconsin was in it all the way. Every team will have bad offensive days, but what I find interesting, outside of Colorado and Boise, those were good offensive games.

Most people rewrite their job description – this tells the reader nothing about how you did it, or what you actually do and serves no purpose. Much better to list your achievements (I use a bullet point format and never more than 2 lines per example), describing what you did and the outcome.

Great review. Thanks for posting such an in depth impression. I’ve handled one in the store, but your review covered alot of ground that I couldn’t with such a limited amount of time. Based on my in-store experience and your review I think I’ll be waiting for a future generation to arrive. The potential is certainly there for this device, but based on my current portfolio of tech devices (laptop, desktop, iPhone, iTouch) I’m not sure this device quite justifies the expense at this time for me.
