Columnist Dave Reardon and I have arrived in … Parkridge, N.J.

We thought we were lost — what do ya know? — we actually found our hotel. Now we’re going to make the trek to West Point, which, we’ve been told, is actually North. We’ll file updates after the Army news conference.

And a happy birthday to Wena.

Got the Tsai-kos logo to put on my shirt for the game.

Shirt says “Go Bows ‘cept when playin’ Army” Using “old-school” logos for both. Probably put the Tsai-kos logo on each sleeve.

Sagarin is one of the computer rankings that the BCS uses, so it will be interesting to track how the WAC is doing in the rankings this year. The stronger the opponent is when UH plays them, the bigger rankings boost UH will get for beating them. The ELO_CHESS column is the one that counts for the BCS.

    1. BSU

    2. TCU

    10. Fresno State

    52. Nevada

    74. UH

    78. Utah State

    82. SJSU

    83. La Tech

    102. Idaho

    154. NMSU !!!

    91. Army

If I read this correctly, Sagarin predicts that UH will beat Army by 12 points (15 point difference minus 3 points for Army being at home).

  16. gigi-hawaii September 7, 2010 6:22 am

Is it ST’s birthday, too? Thought it was just Wena’s.

  17. Garret September 7, 2010 6:23 am

    WassupDoc,

Since you are here now, I should answer your question about pan lau lau. Pan lau lau is something my Mom brings to tailgates–she makes a huge pan of lau lau. It disappears quickly, so if you weren’t there when they showed up you might not have seen it.

I heard from Dad that pan lau lau might show up at tailgates 2 or 3 times this season because people seem to want it. *I* wish I could have some of that!

Kazz… just spoke with my neighbor about her daughter. For her senior year, she’s decided to drop softball (Catcher), and stick with volleyball (Setter). Too much coming up for her this year to concentrate on both, plus choir. Even with my daughter back home, (they were together in choir for a couple of years), this girl probably will not want to go to school in Hawaii… too far away from the rest of her family and friends.

According to USA Todays Sagarin link, looks to me that its saying Warriors favored by 6 points. Vegas Insider reports an opening line of 3 point favorites for Army with a mention of Moniz starting as probable. I’m sure the line will adjust once they get confirmation. Or maybe not.

Nice read by “ferd” about the Cadets’ HC.

…that stadium opening loss to NAIA defending champion Texas A&I was disheartening. Ahhhh, memories. 😈

  35. Buffoman September 7, 2010 7:18 am

I know that I may be stepping ahead but if there is not marked improvement in our defense and special team play, having watched that BSU – VT game, I’d have to say that playing on that blue turf could turn out to be a disaster. face it, BSU is just a well coached, disciplined team. Their defense is relentless and simply do not make many mistakes, and they’re fast. As much as I may dislike BSU, you have to give Peterson props for his team’s preparation, both mental and physical.

The weekend visit by USC was good for Hawaii even though we did not win. great barameter to see where we stand. Until I see something different, I give the edge to Shoji to make the adjustments to be able to be successful.

This game against Army this weekend really will not say much about our defense as the offense is quite single dimensional. Look what maryland did to Navy in the red zone. The test will be against Colorado. Not to say we’ll beat Army. Given that we are somewhat lacking on D, I’d say it won’t be an easy win as they will score. We’ll have to score more.

  36. USMA BOW FAN September 7, 2010 7:23 am

I think getting creamed by Texas A&I the following year was even more disheartening. Ray Nagle spoke at my Dad’s Rotary club that year and said they would not be scheduling Texas A&I anymore.

Always interesting to note that if you know both the blog and real name of a Tsai-ko… and must call out to them suddenly…the blog name will come out in most cases. At least for me…

  68. Garret September 7, 2010 9:54 am

It would nice if UH could have Mack’s show broadcast on regional and national networks–maybe Fox Sports West would be interested in re-airing Mack’s show? I thought of this because JJ’s show will be shown ever week regionally on Fox Sports SW (multiple times) and nationally on CBS CS (11 times this week).

FoxSports Southwest and CBS College Sports will showcase the SMU Mustang football program in a series of half-hour shows beginning Tuesday, Sept. 7. The show, titled “SMU Football 2010: The Climb”, will feature SMU head Coach June Jones, but will also provide insight into the inner workings of a college football program, by giving viewers a first-time look at practices, team meetings and campus facilities.

Agreements with both FoxSports Southwest and CBS College Sports allow the show to have both a regional and national footprint. Shot in HD, the show will debut on Sept. 7 on FoxSports Southwest following the Texas Rangers game around 11 p.m. CT. CBS-C is scheduled to air the show starting on Wednesday, Sept. 8, at 8 p.m. CT. CBS-C also has the show slated for two more primetime replays during the week and an additional eight re-airs in other time slots. After this week’s series premiere, FSSW air the weekly show on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. and will also re-air the show throughout the week.

  71. Garret September 7, 2010 10:00 am

Maybe UH could offer to let Fox Sports West, Fox Sports Northwest, and Fox Sports Bay Area (the areas where UH recruits heaviest and players are shown from all 3 areas) to be able to show Mack’s show for free. It might help them fill time slots and would be good exposure for the Warriors.

  86. rage777 September 7, 2010 10:37 am

    Garret,

Should we be rooting for BSU or against? Since they are leaving the WAC, I don’t think it’s good for us if they do good this year since it will help the MWC next year. The only good thing is the BCS bowl money. Does BSU have to give up the bowl money if they go to a BCS bowl next year like the MWC teams had to give the WAC money after they left?

  87. Slugger September 7, 2010 10:45 am

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY, WENA!!!

    Good morning, gang!

Good practice this morning. Moniz was out there throwing, as well as Rausch & Austin.

  88. Garret September 7, 2010 10:48 am

    rage777,

If BSU makes a BCS bowl, they keep $3 million (whether or not they are in the WAC) and the rest of the WAC teams split $3 million.

If Fresno and Nevada leave after this year, that means UH would get $500k if BSU makes a BCS bowl.

If Fresno and Nevada stay for another year, they will get their shares of BSU’s money and UH will get $375k.

All of BSU’s computer points this season count for the MWC in the BCS evaluation period. The *best* thing would be for BSU to go undefeated until UH beats them later this season, as the amount of computer points UH would get then would be amazing. The next best thing to me would be if BSU wins their nonconference games and loses at least a couple of WAC games…as long as Fresno/Nevada aren’t the teams that beat them.

If Fresno or Nevada is ranked at the end of the season and go to the MWC next year, they will big a huge boost to the MWC’s AQ chances. So, I’d actually rather BSU beat both of them and lose to the other WAC teams…but it is extremely difficult for *anybody* to beat BSU.

Gave a specific example of why it’s beneficial for the coaches to review the film for the benefit of the players. 😉

Glad I made it to this one; may be the only one for the season…

  106. Garret September 7, 2010 11:52 am

Official announcement of Big Sky expansion included the news that D-IAA ADs weren’t interested in the WAC.

It’s now officially official: Cal Poly and UC Davis are in the Big Sky Conference as football affiliates.

The biggest thing that this says is that FCS teams – especially the ones out west – are not as enticed by the WAC as some people seem to think. UC athletic director Greg Warzecka and Cal Poly athletic director Alison Cone are expected to talk today about how a move to the WAC made absolutely no sense for either school financially.

imho benson needs to gets some of his priorities straight or be replace.

  109. kev-1 September 7, 2010 12:05 pm

sooo . . . kinda unrelated to anything being talked about here now, but I have been thinking about Colt and feel pretty sour about the whole deal. At this point, he has cleared waivers and no interest or practice squad offer.

The Raiders pulled a pretty shady deal on Colt. If there were really other teams interested, why was he led to the Raiders by his agent? His agent knew what he was walking in to. I recently read that a bunch of veteran QB’s were turning down Chicago offers left and right because they were trying to sign “camp arms” just like the Raiders did with Colt. It seems like something that is pretty insulting.

Colt needs to train hard and get rid of his agent. Hopefully he has a future somewhere.

  111. Guy in the office September 7, 2010 12:07 pm

Anyone watching the vaTech-Boise game yesterday see the replay on the last drive in which Austin Pettis stepped out of bounds after making a catch along the sidelines, then stepped back in play and was hit late? I swear I saw that, but the announcers didn’t comment on it. It would have negated the personal foul on the out-of-bounds hit, and Boise would not have picked up the extra 15 yards or so because of it. Not sure if it would have made a difference; just wondered if anyone else saw that play.

  112. Garret September 7, 2010 12:10 pm

    Cleveland just waived David Veikune.

The Browns have conceded the David Veikune experiment won’t be working out.

They waived the 2009 second-round pick to make room for cornerback Derrick Roberson, an undrafted player who’s been on the practice squad of three teams.

    It’s another beee-u-ti-ful day in paradise…enjoying it.

As soon as Coach Rolo walked in the door, I knew I was going to enjoy the Na Koa luncheon! He has such a quick, dry sense of humor! And so honest, but diplomatic. The price is reasonable and the food is good.

He spoke glowingly of his relationship with the Mouse. Also, he keeps in touch with June. As he went through the plays, I could see why the RnS has historically taken 3-4 games for the QB and WR’s to get in synch. There are a lot of reads to make and the QB/WR have to all be reading the same page. If a WR doesn’t do his job correctly, he could negatively influence the pass that’s being thrown to another WR. Did folks notice that June’s wunderkind QB that blew up Nevada last year threw 3 interceptions in this years’ opening game?

I also like how he’s putting in his own touches like formations (not saying which one(s)) that make it easier for the RB’s. He mentioned little things (not going to be specific) which have already made big differences.

Last night was an example of how ESPN values TV markets over rankings:

Virginia Tech got $2.35 million for the game

  174. Garret September 7, 2010 5:33 pm

    Garret,

So there’s no point on UH’s other sports trying to move over to the BW, if there’s several teams already making moves to the Big Sky because they want to play fb as well, is there???

    mctruck,

UH was only going to put their non-football teams in the Big West. *Only* the football teams for UC-Davis and Cal Poly have moved to the Big Sky. Those teams were NOT in the Big West since the Big West does not have football.

So, absolutely nothing changed in the Big West. In fact, the Big West is more stable now because their commissioner had talked about how he was worried that UC-Davis and Cal Poly would leave them completely for other conferences.

  175. USMA BOW FAN September 7, 2010 5:34 pm

The recent HUGE upgrades in the athletic facilities have not been funded by taxpayer dollars.

Here are a couple of links that give examples of USMA’s “Margin of Excellence Project” that funded a number of upgrades throughout the academy.

    http://www.goarmysports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=11100&ATCLID=323762

Transcript of official remarks on the celebration of USMA’s bicentennial. It’s long, but there are a few mentions of how private funding has upgraded facilities:

    http://www.usma.edu/bicentennial/foundersdaydinner.asp

  176. Garret September 7, 2010 5:38 pm

UC-Davis and Cal Poly left the *Great West* to go to the Big Sky conference. The schools left behind in the Great West are Southern Utah, North Dakota and South Dakota…none of those schools are members of the Big West and they may be forced to fold their football teams.

  177. oldie September 7, 2010 5:39 pm

Sent out all requests for the USC DVD. If you don’t get your copy in the next couple of days, LMK. If you’re on the Continent (as JL would say), it’s going to take a few days more to get to you.

The Better Half says “There are fans that want a copy of the game? Do they realize that we lost?” Obviously, she’s not Tsaiko material…

  178. Garret September 7, 2010 5:43 pm

Southern Utah was rumored all weekend to be also joining UC-Davis and Cal Poly in the Big Sky conference to get them to go to 12 teams. It is curious that the Big Sky is stopping at 11 teams *for now*.

The latest speculation I see is that the Big Sky is keeping the final spot in their conference open for a WAC team that wants to drop down to D-IAA (Idaho? Utah State? NMSU?). If nobody drops down, the Big Sky can add Southern Utah next year in time for the 2012 season to join when UC-Davis and Cal Poly join.

The other repeated speculation is that the Big Sky could be worried about losing Montana and Montana State to the WAC so they proactively added teams to protect their conference. However, last I heard Montana did not have the money to move up to D-IA and Montana State nowhere close to moving up to D-IA.

  179. Kazz (click to support UH softball) September 7, 2010 5:44 pm

What did we get for the USC game?

  180. Kazz (click to support UH softball) September 7, 2010 5:47 pm

    Wafan,

The national media will NOT. They will pump up Army’s win over the team that racked up 588 yards on USC a week earlier. If Army wins, Army will get more credit (deservingly so) than any mention of UH or the distance traveled.

  181. Kazz (click to support UH softball) September 7, 2010 5:49 pm

I’ve really come to enjoy playing the service academies.

There is no drama from the other team, NO arrogant fans, and NO arrogant coaches.

It’s nice to play an opponent you respect.

  182. Garret September 7, 2010 5:49 pm

Amazing ratings for the game last night. This should help boost WAC games this season when BSU is on.

ESPN drew a 6.8 overnight rating for Monday’s Boise State/Virginia Tech game, up 21% from Miami/Florida State last year (5.6), and easily the highest overnight of the weekend for a college football game on the ESPN family of networks.

No other college football game on ESPN/ESPN2 or ABC drew even a 3.0 overnight, with LSU/North Carolina coming the closest (2.8).

Boise State/Virginia Tech ranks among the top sporting events of the year on ESPN, trailing events such as the January 31 Pro Bowl (7.9), The Decision on July 8 (7.3) and Cavaliers/Celtics Game 6 on May 13 (7.1).

  183. chawan_cut September 7, 2010 5:52 pm

Happy B-day to Wena and ST.

  185. Garret September 7, 2010 5:55 pm

    Kazz,

ESPN has to right to show any WAC home game as part of the TV deal that gives UH $325k per year. UH *did* get an extra $75k for letting ESPN move the game from Saturday to Thursday. So, UH got a $75k bonus from ESPN while BSU got $1.25 million. It is nice to have ESPN wanting to set up games for a school…wish that was UH.

  186. Garret September 7, 2010 5:58 pm

From what I understand, the BSU game got a 6.8 rating and the UH-USC game got less than a 1 rating.

  187. madeinhawaii September 7, 2010 6:09 pm

If UH can pump those passing yard numbers up and rack up the points, I think the ratings will go up. It will be a joy to see those numbers creep up slowly. UH needs to win the big ones going into it’s confrontation with Boise. Not just for the WAC title.. but to launch UH’s future as a possible independent. Fresno, Nevada are solid this year… even Utah State and Idaho look to do well… So this is the season to make an impression and come back next season ranked.

  188. madeinhawaii September 7, 2010 6:12 pm

How sad that this might turn out to be the best ever and very last season of the WAC.

  189. Kazz (click to support UH softball) September 7, 2010 6:13 pm

    Yikes!

Good thing for USC that not a lot of people across the country saw how much of a liability their secondary is.

  190. Kazz (click to support UH softball) September 7, 2010 6:16 pm

If we beat Boise, the national headlines won’t read much into it to give us decent credit.

It will be a national media onslaught about how BSU was never on par with the “big boys” of college football. You might get a blurb about how we (UH) won the game, but that’s about it.

  191. Kazz (click to support UH softball) September 7, 2010 6:18 pm

Watching the speed of the BSU dline and linebackers, it will be the first time this season our offensive line will be tested to the maximum.

Size-wise Colorado may present a HUGE presence, but not much in the way of skill or speed.

BSU is THE test to see how far we’ve come since last Thursday.

#111 G in the O. Sorry, I’m responding so late. I stepped out for a few hours. On that play, I’m not sure, but if the ref blew the whistle and then the guy hit the one coming back on the field, then the call was the right call. Once the whistle blew the play is dead, even though the guy that caught the ball was still playing it. I don’t think they had the sound of the whistle during the replay. It still would be a judgment call though.

  195. Garret September 7, 2010 7:06 pm

    madeinhawaii,

I don’t know how UH’s ESPN numbers will go up when UH isn’t scheduled for any more ESPN games…ESPN might pick up the UH-BSU game if UH is doing well and BSU is undefeated. However, I think that game is scheduled at a time where ESPN would normally have some other game–BSU gets shown on a lot of Fridays, but UH’s game is on Saturday.

  196. Garret September 7, 2010 7:08 pm

Article about Idaho’s record check for playing at Nebraska this week.

The payout for Saturday’s Nebraska game, $800,000, is the largest the Vandals have ever received, according to athletic director Rob Spear. But the high mark won’t last long. Next year, UI is getting $850,000 to play at Texas A&M. And in 2012, LSU is paying the Vandals $950,000 to come to Baton Rouge.

  197. Garret September 7, 2010 7:08 pm

Interesting note about how Idaho has to take these body bag games, in part because of their nonrevenue sports losing money and the high travel costs to Honolulu and Ruston.

When you have away games at La Tech and Hawaii in the same season and the football travel costs alone is $250K for those two games…….

The financial gap between the haves and have nots in college football is increasing exponentially. Idaho can’t keep up the financial arms race by any stretch of the imagination. The lack of current and future TV revenue for Idaho also puts them behind the money 8-ball.

Schools like Idaho have no choice but to take these bodybag games and the big paychecks that come with them. They have to in order to pay for the football program and all the other non-revenue programs in the athletic department.

  199. Garret September 7, 2010 7:11 pm

Idaho got $600k checks for playing at Pac-10 schools a few years ago–the going rate for playing at Pac-10 schools will probably be above $1 million after the Pac-10 gets their new contract. Note that UH gets nothing (aside from a nominal amount that is supposed to cover travel costs–UH gets that number when it goes to USC and USC gets that number when it goes to UH) when it plays at USC since that is part of a home-and-home deal.

The previous high for a payout was $600,000 for the USC game in 2007 and Arizona in 2008

  200. Guy in the office September 7, 2010 7:14 pm

Papajoe2: If I saw it correctly (wish I could see a replay), Pettis stepped out of bounds a few yards before the impact. In other words, by stepping OB, the play should have been dead and there would have been no subsequent late hit. Obviously, since the play occurred on the Boise side of the field, there was no challenge.

  201. greenthumb September 7, 2010 7:15 pm

#186 Garret and others, for comparison/baseline, wonder what the rating might have been for the Boise game if it had been played in that slightly weird UH-USC time slot? Kind of surprising otherwise that the three major groups you would think would watch the UH-USC game added up that low — UH fans, USC fans, people wanting to see a USC post-sanctions train wreck.

Also, is pan laulau basically the traditional recipe without being wrapped in ti leaf?

  202. greenthumb September 7, 2010 7:17 pm

#195, is there some kind of WAC agreement in place for conference games where we shift times if ESPN asks because it wants to telecast?

  203. postmanke September 7, 2010 7:20 pm

…but Fox Sports Network not in hotels says Billy Tubbs

My guess is If we go independent FSN may have a part in it..

  204. madeinhawaii September 7, 2010 7:39 pm

Playing on Fridays, or early Saturday may become a necessity if UH goes independent.

  205. LizKauai (iPad) September 7, 2010 7:52 pm

    oldie-mahalo!

As for Mrs oldie, she needs to come with you to a T-gate or two and “see the light”. Hahahaha!

  206. Garret September 7, 2010 8:03 pm

    madeinhawaii,

Early Saturday there are no timeslots available because the highly-rated SEC, Big 10, Big 12, etc., games are all playing. They get many times the ratings that UH gets, so UH has to play at night if it wants national TV.

  207. Garret September 7, 2010 8:06 pm

#195, is there some kind of WAC agreement in place for conference games where we shift times if ESPN asks because it wants to telecast?

    greenthumb,

If a WAC team agrees to play on a Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday, they get an extra $50k to $75k. Moving kickoff times on Saturday I don’t think gets any extra money, but all WAC teams would probably do it for the exposure.

  208. Garret September 7, 2010 8:10 pm

    greenthumb,

There is a reason why the Pac-10 gets so much less TV money than the Big 10 and SEC, and even less than the Big 12…lower TV ratings. There are a lot of TV sets on the East Coast that get turned off before night time hits the West Coast.

People in the western half of the US can watch games before their team plays. People on the eastern half of the US are celebrating wins/consoling themselves after losses before the Pac-10 teams play. Most TV viewers are done watching TV for the night before UH kicks off.

That is just a stereotype and some Pac-10 games do bring in big ratings. But even UH in 2007 didn’t get anywhere near the ratings that BSU/VT just got or what the Big 10 and SEC and Texas get every week.

  209. Garret September 7, 2010 8:16 pm

When people complain about the disparity in TV money between the WAC and other conferences, we should keep in mind that the Pac-10 gets 1/3 what the Big 10 or SEC gets. People watch some games more than others, and the time zone problem and the fact that the population is more concentrated in the East Coast and Northwest makes a difference. It makes a difference when West Coast games end well after East Coast TV viewers are asleep.

TV networks pay for viewers and don’t care about which conference is providing them–they will pay any school or conference that will bring the viewers. We cannot blame the BCS for that–they get their money from their huge TV contract, and they have that contract because people watch their games far more than other bowl games.

Playing an exciting brand of football helps bring in TV viewers *if a team wins enough*. ESPN loved UH in 2006 and 2007 and shunned UH in 2010. UH needs to earn the spotlight back or get left behind with a tiny WAC TV contract or a tiny independent TV contract.

#207 & #208 Garret, thanks. It is a good reminder that while Pac-10 makes and gets a lot of noise on the West Coast, the population centers (and majority of viewers) are really farther east. It seems like one way to end-run the MWC is to take Boise’s playbook and out-Boise BSU. Exciting football with surprises, played at least most of the time on Fridays.

Yes the traffic for home games would be terrible. But remember back in 2007 when Hawaii was getting a lot of attention? At the time, I wondered if we would have been getting even more if our home games hadn’t ended so late on Saturdays. We did get the rankings, but would we have gotten even more exposure?

  238. Momo September 7, 2010 9:21 pm

Was waatching my Japanese program every tuesday from 8-9. I am a late sleeper and an early riser 3.30 a.m.

Regular Lau Lau is wrapped and steamed to cook. It is a lot of work. Pan Lau Lau is baked in the oven at a temp of 350 for the first hour and 250 for the next five.

To start , you will need a pan of any size, depending on how many people you will serve it to.. The bottom of the pan is lined with Ti leaves in a single layer, cut to the pan size. Over the Ti leave, a layer of Luau leaf is placed. The leaf is par boiled so it is easy to spread. The basic items is placed in the pan in clusters (meat, pork, butterfish, chicken) but other things can be added. We like to add smoked sausage to give it a good smoked flavor. Over this, another layer of leaf is added and on top of this is added Ti leave. The whole pan is now tin foiled and placecd in the oven. The only seasoning that is added is Hawaiian salt to the meat product. If you have any question, call us

  239. Ralph September 7, 2010 9:24 pm

You can’t get any steam until water boils at 100 centigrade at sea level, so at least 100, then it depends on the container to trap the steam.

  240. Kekoa September 7, 2010 9:28 pm

The temperature setting from Aunty Marialani’s cooking school would reccomend the oven be heated at 5 degrees for 6 days.

To say we lost is not pessimism or anti-UH, its reality. We have a chance to win at Army and Colorado, now the team got to learn how to win and just do it at both places, we’ll see in two weeks.

ralph please stay as positive as you can be. we only played in one game.

once we simplify the defensive sets and assignments we’ll be all right.

special teams looks much improved thus far. i guarantee we won’t make that same mistake on sky punt coverage.

i wish they would give hadden a shot at least to kickoff. i mean if we are going to be scoring often then the kickoff will be a significant part of the game.

  274. Michigan Warrior September 8, 2010 3:01 am

People seem to forget that we had probably the most injuries ever last year too. And yet still made a late run and almost made postseason play.

#238… When I was stationed in Korea, (around the time of the 88 Olympics), my grandmother sent me a recipe for “Easy Laulau”. There were substitutes listed… if no butterfish, then use Salmon; if no Luau leaves, then use spinach. All of this went into a greased pan, since we also didn’t have Ti-leaves.

After being away for so many years, this Easy Laulau actually came out pretty good. Of course, it didn’t taste anything like the real thing, but as a substitute, it opened lots of bruddah’s and sistah’s eyes… especially with da neverending pot of rice, and da full tray of mac salad!!! Yeah, we had few different types of kimchi on da side too.

  275. Michigan Warrior September 8, 2010 3:10 am

Oh, I should have completed the recipe…

This was done in a casserole dish.

The (canned) spinach was thoroughly drained.

The salmon soaked in water for about an hour, then drained and sliced to bite-size pieces.

Everything was layered… spinach on bottom; then pork and salmon; and topped with more spinach.

Pan was tightly covered with foil, and baked at 350 for an hour. Guess you would have to go longer if you loaded up with more meat and/or used a bigger pan.

  276. Garret September 8, 2010 3:24 am

MW ~ The same challenges applied when I was with NATO in Germany. I held workshops at the monthly Hawaiian club meetings. We taught others how to make the staples, like a good Mac salad, or even Huli-huli chicken. I was stunned at how many folks didn’t know how to make Lomi salmon or even slice Sashimi! Teriyaki/Tempura anything was also a popular workshop class. Sushi?…YES!

Those old timers who retired and decided to stay in

is how we could gather the resources to do our

  281. Garret September 8, 2010 3:41 am

Two interesting tidbits in this Star-Advertiser article:

    1. JD openly talks about how UH will need to play games on Thursday and Friday to get on TV “especially if we end up going independent.”

    2. UH has already begun talks about getting travel support from the HTA.

  282. USMA BOW FAN September 8, 2010 4:34 am

Are road game tickets ever available through the UH ticket office? If not, do you just get them through the home team and ask to sit in the visitor’s section? BSU tickets go on sale Sept 15th.

Ref food: No one makes an authentic lomi lomi salmon in Washington – they always put WAY TOO MUCH salmon in it!!!! (Although if it’s also made with Walla Walla sweet onions, that kind of makes up for it).

One game up at Sam Boyd Stadium, we sat two rows above Coach Riley Wallace and his family. He turned to me at halftime and said, “You sure are loud. You need to come to MY games!” I had to sadly tell him that I now lived in Michigan, and couldn’t make it home.

Thing was… these were the metal bleacher seats way up in the nose-bleed section with our backs to the dirt parking lot. So, I thought it was really surprising that this coach and his entourage would even be in (what I thought to be) such deplorable seats.

    UH 34 Black Knights 17

  294. d1島 September 8, 2010 6:33 am

    Great Morning All!

Hope the UHAA/LWC has some Taste of Aloha at the USMA tailgate for the expats.

WooHoo! Already on the downhill glide for Game Day!

    Have a terrific one erryboddy!

    HiHo….

  295. Buffoman September 8, 2010 6:45 am

Don’t know if anyone has said it or believe it but for UH to get the attention of ESPN if they go independent after the 2011 season (when FSU and Nevada leave, if they hopefully do not exit earlier) they would need to: 1). stay close or beat BSU this year, 2). beat FSU, Nevada and LaTech this year and then 3). beat FSU, Nevada and La Tech next year. This would mean that they would, if they beat BSU and others be the WAC champions this year and when they do the same in 2011 they would be WAC champions again.

Let’s face it, if they go 8 – 5 this year, that would mean that they lost to USC, BSU, FSU, Nevada and either Colorado or LaTech. That would translate to their beating the bottom half of the WAC. And if that is repeated in 2011, I cannot see UH as being attractive to ESPN.

There is only so much Diamond Head and hula they can sell on television, much less a sport channel. To be attractive to a possible ESPN television package on a thursday night as an independent, they have to win competitive games.

Sorry, but if UH can’t beat the big boys, they need to think in another direction. June did it and so did Tomey and Wags. Simply put, Mac has to be like them.

  296. expat September 8, 2010 6:51 am

Boise State has been extremely aggressive the past five or so years in getting television exposure even if it means playing during non-traditional times — Sunday games, Thursday games, etc in the middle of the season. Proactive thinking by their AD in building their very young brand. Of course it helps that they have been winning too. I thought that they were cooked against VT at the end but they did it. The best part for them is that they did it without any “trickery” (whatever that means). The ESPN announcers would have loved to have the “trickery” excuse to make it seem like Boise was undeserving.

I think UH has a shot against Boise. It will be a challenge playing them at home, but their secondary is beatable.

  297. Kekoa (iPhone) September 8, 2010 7:11 am

Buffoman ~ I gotta tell ya this story 1st.

One of the O-line guys on our fb team was said to be stronger/faster than a Buffalo, and uglier than a Gorilla. Thus, his nick became *Buffarilla!”

So now whenever I see your blog name, I think of my good friend, Buffarilla.

Anyway, I just want to say that as stated by certain members of the Press, we shredded their defense for nearly 600 yds! So even tho we nevah did beat the big boy, we still gave ESPN something to talk about.

  300. Turf Management NY September 8, 2010 8:01 am

I really liked this post. You write about this topic very well. Your turf management company should recommend a professional assistance and advice towards the development and care of your athletic fields. Grounds staff can be extremely creative and some have a skill of taking a bleak playing field and turning it into your very own “field of dreams.” These results motivate your sports teams, but more importantly, instill a community satisfaction and restore morale.

  313. protector September 9, 2010 4:45 am

    al on 272,

I felt the same way as you do about Hadden (Haddon?) kicking off. Though it’s eye-opening how much improvement he’s made on field goals, Enos’ kick-offs are discouragingly short. I just think they want to red-shirt the guy (Hadden) to have him for the next 4 years. What about Kyle Niiro; how’s his distance on kick-offs? Or even Dunnachie?

Just wondering if eBay enables you to market concert tickets on the net? Do you know if you’ll find any restrictions based on what country you are in?

My parents have just called me and asked if i could “get rid” of their two tickets to some concert as they wont have the ability to make it because of an additional family event.

Apart from asking close friends etc, i thought ebay would be an excellent place to sell them.

But whats ebay’s policy on marketing tickets? Ive heard alot about it for the news but ive forgotten what happened.

and if it matters, the concert is inside this coming month

Thanks in advance for the advice.

nice James Cameron movie. But how do we know how to interact. Its all gestures. Also, looks like all projected interfaces from some mysterious hidden projector. May be all future materials can change color if given some current. Like E-ink. Also if the data needs to flow seamlessly from one device medium to another, we need to buy all microsoft product only including the coffee cup shown. How does iPhone fit into this ecosystem.
