Malcolm Lane suspended

Wideout Malcolm Lane’s comeback attempted has been derailed.

Head coach Greg McMackin announced on the Warrior Beat Show that Lane, who did not play last season to focus on academics, has been suspended for violating team rules.

That means Lane will not participate in the offseason conditioning program. He also is not expected to be available for spring practice.

It was hoped Lane would compete to reclaim the starting right wideout’s job he held in 2008. Jovonte Taylor, who led the Warriors in yards-after-catch average last year, also will not be back.

Royce Pollard, Billy Ray Stutzmann and Darius Bright are the likely top contenders at right wideout.

  4. Bulla February 9, 2010 6:32 am

    Coach Mack,

Will you be changing your defensive scheme from a 4-3 to a 3-4 since you have recruited DE’s very heavily?

    Mahalo and GO WARRIORS 🙂

  5. LizKauai [iMac] m/ February 9, 2010 6:34 am

Coach Mack- yesterday we got a bystander report that the players were out in the heat doing some serious unsupervised workouts.
What other signs of “the year of taking it seriously” have you seen coming from our guys?

  6. LizKauai [iMac] m/ February 9, 2010 6:35 am

Coach Mack- any sign of a TE position this year?

  7. LizKauai [iMac] m/ February 9, 2010 6:37 am

Coach Mack- Happy Valentines Day! Thanks for all the hard work and the fine new recruits! Can you share with us any news about our graduates and their “next level” possibilities?

  8. bstunna2002 February 9, 2010 6:38 am

    Coach Mack,

First of all great job to you and the other coaches on this years recruiting class I feel we got some great players and it’s great to know that a local boy lead the charge for other locals to stay home and play for the State not just a university. My question is now that you have a clearer picture of the scholarship count are you done recruiting or are there a few left for some players who might have slipped through the cracks?

    Mahalo

  9. LizKauai [iMac] m/ February 9, 2010 6:38 am

Coach Mack- do you forsee any changes with our football mascot this year?

  10. bstunna2002 February 9, 2010 6:39 am

    Coach Mack,

Are there any forseeable coaching changes that are happening this season?

  11. Pukalani February 9, 2010 6:40 am

    Coach Mack,

Who do you see as potential “impact” players this season? Where do Aaron Brown and Kaniela Tuipulotu fit in?

  12. Pukalani February 9, 2010 6:42 am

    Coach Mack,

Of all the new recruits, who do you see getting early playing time?

  13. Fan in LA February 9, 2010 6:43 am

    Coach,

Glad to hear that you recruited a kicker. How good do you think he will be? The next Jason Elam perhaps? We need all the points we can get even if they are field goals.

  14. 702WarriorFan February 9, 2010 6:43 am

    Coach Mack,
Will there be any coaching changes or reassignment this spring?

  15. Pukalani February 9, 2010 6:45 am

    Coach Mack,

Is Moniz locked in as the starter or do you think Rausch, Graves, Nielsen, or Shutter can jump him?

  16. 702WarriorFan February 9, 2010 6:49 am

    Coach Mack,
Last year we read and saw players climbing over the security fence to access the field to practise during a public holiday.
Have we fixed this issue to ensure players will have open gate access to the field without putting themselves in harmsway?

  17. wayoutwest February 9, 2010 6:53 am

Are you done recruiting for 2010?

Is your coaching staff anticipating any non-qualifiers from the recruits that have signed this year?

Which non-conference game are you most looking forward to playing next season?

Appreciate the effort you and your staff put into the program.

  18. Bulla February 9, 2010 6:53 am

    702WarriorFan,

good question because i think the 15th, next monday is a holiday!

  19. Pukalani February 9, 2010 6:54 am

Bulla, did you mean to say “recruited LB’s very heavily?”

  20. Bulla February 9, 2010 6:58 am

    Puka,

you’re right, we got LB’s and DE’s, either way you look at it. the one thing we seem to have is ‘speed’…and if you like having guys flying around the ball, you need speed. hopefully, we can have some depth, and keep ‘fresh legs’ in the game, makes a big difference, just ask Boise State……

good job coach mack, every day we move forward is one less day moving backwards. 🙂

  21. Bulla February 9, 2010 6:59 am

    ST
mahalo for getting the ‘big dog’ to come out and talk to ‘the fans’ today on your show. i tell you, cutting edge, you and the princess…..and i know there are so many people who appreciated the tuesday show……

I know that the DL runs at 0700 a few days a week. Walk ons are training M,T, Th, Fr at 2 pm in the weight room and they run also after that.

others are motivated to train on Saturdays also, i know of a Crusader or two who are at Kalaepohaku at 7 am to do more explosion and power drills every Saturday….and EVERYONE rests on Sunday.

Have a good day to all the Tsaikos, and tune in today for the 11 am show 🙂

  25. whitey February 9, 2010 7:34 am

    Good morning Tsaikos.

Question for Coach McMackin: First of all, thanks for a great job on this year’s recruits. Will Jesse Williams from Australia be part of the 2011 class??????

  26. 808Chef February 9, 2010 7:34 am

    Hi Coach!

With this recruting class being your third since you took over the program, how do you rate the progression since year one? Oh yeah…what are you having for lunch today? Thanks!

  27. Bulla February 9, 2010 7:35 am

    808

i like the lunch question, you can tell alot about a person by what they ‘choose’ to eat…………right Tsaikos? haha

  28. whitey February 9, 2010 7:42 am

Like Ferd, I truly hope Coach Nash and his team have a good road trip cause the light at the end of the season is slowly fading.

  29. maui warrior February 9, 2010 7:42 am

What recruits from the past two classes(’08 and ’09) do expect to take that next step towards being major contributors to the Warrior Program?

  30. Justin February 9, 2010 7:45 am

    Mack,

Will there be any alterations to the pre-game festivities in the upcoming season? The introductions of the 2007 season (e o na toa e warrior chant and personal player intros) were much more intimidating than Hawaii five-o, which I and many others can barely hear from the stands.

  31. HoweLee February 9, 2010 7:45 am

    Morning All
    Great questions for coach today.

  32. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc February 9, 2010 7:46 am

We’ll be at the softball games this weekend as well as the volleyball matches – will come in late for the latter on Friday. As usual, we’ll be sitting on the third base side against the back fence for the former. Please say hi and stop by for a snack pack.

However, if you would like our volleyball tickets on Friday, February 19, please send an e-mail to swood at hoku ddot com. That’s the kickoff game for the 2009 UH baseball season and there is NO way that we’ll miss it. Hopefully, a new policy will be in place by then to allow tickets for one lower campus sporting event to be used to attend another one on the same date.

Off to work – long, long day including a followup eyeball appointment to see if additional surgery can be avoided.

  33. Garret February 9, 2010 7:54 am

Free Denny’s Grand Slam today…last year we had long lines at the Denny’s near us but this year there was no line and we were seated right away.

  34. Garret February 9, 2010 7:56 am

    Coach Mack,

What is the current plan for dividing the snaps between the QBs during Spring Practice? Are you going to have the snaps divided equally among the 6 QBs in the beginning and then gradually have 2 or 3 QBs get the bulk of the snaps?

  35. Garret February 9, 2010 8:03 am

Looks like the Pac-10 just hired a deputy commissioner to work on creating a Pac-10 network and study expansion. Weiberg used to be the commissioner of the Big 12 and then he left that to help create the Big 10 network…a pretty impressive hire for a deputy spot with the Pac-10.

Pac-10 expansion will obviously have some effect on the WAC and UH, but the Pac-10 network would possibly have a huge effect on recruiting in Hawaii and around the country. The network could show every game in HD for football, basketball, volleyball, soccer, and other sports…a big recruiting tool.

Kevin Weiberg, left, was announced as the league’s deputy commissioner, effective April 12. The 53-year-old Weiberg left his job as Big 12 commissioner in 2007 to join the Big Ten Network, where he worked for 18 months.

  36. Kazz February 9, 2010 8:05 am

    Coach Mack,

Now that we have green jerseys to add to our home black, some of us fans would like to be color-coordinated with the team on game day like many do across the country. For this upcoming season, through the media, could you release what uniform combination you plan to use for each game prior to game day?

  37. rage777 February 9, 2010 8:06 am

    Coach Mack,

We have heard different stories about this, so can you please explain what happened to Mel DeLaura. And if you wanted to change strength coaches, why not hire the guy in Arizona that seems to work wonders with all of our former players.

  38. Pomai February 9, 2010 8:08 am

Coach, first I know being in Hawaii has some disadvantages, but what can you do to assure or at least try to get a 100% participation in unsupervised summer work outs like Boise State has. I feel that, that is one area that we really need to improve on.

  39. Garret February 9, 2010 8:08 am

So, comparing publicly available TV revenue numbers:

    2008 Pac-10: $43 million
2008 Big 10: $66 million (I’ve seen published reports that it was over $100 million in 2009 since more cable companies added the network)
SEC contract: $200 million per year
WAC contract: reports indicated something like $1 million per year

Forget about the BCS bowl money, that monetary difference between AQ and non-AQ conferences is *nothing* when you look at what conferences make in the regular season. If the Pac-10 can form their network, they could double or triple their TV money and the gap in the West between the haves and the have nots will grow.

  40. rage777 February 9, 2010 8:09 am

    Coach Mack,

With all the anger towards the Fehoko family, what are the plans with Vili?

  41. Garret February 9, 2010 8:11 am

This article credits Weiberg for adding Penn State when the Big 10 wanted to expand by 1 team, so he’s definitely qualified to oversee the Pac-10 expansion. It is nice that their network will televise the nonrevenue sports (soccer, volleyball, tennis, etc.) around the country.

The Big Ten is currently weighing the expansion issue, and that move could have a ripple effect on other major conferences. Weiberg was deputy to Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany from 1989 to 1998, and a Pac-10 statement says Weiberg “was instrumental in the integration of Penn State into the conference.”

Weiberg, 53, also worked 18 months for the Big Ten Network, a venture that will pay that conference $2.8 billion over 25 years and helps expose nonrevenue sports, one of Scott’s avowed goals for the Pac-10.

“I left it feeling pretty good about the potential such a network carries,” Weiberg said. “It’s a wonderful way for universities to extend their brand, and it’s great exposure for sports that don’t receive much of it.

  42. rage777 February 9, 2010 8:11 am

    Coach Mack,

What do you think needs to be done to get more students to the football games? I think $10 seats and free transportation is what the college kids need, that way they can get drunk and not have to drive back to their dorms. 🙂

  43. anonymous February 9, 2010 8:18 am

    Hello Coach Mack,

Two practices I attended last year. Both times I watched the team start practice without any calisthenics or stretching. What’s the theory behind this?

  44. lava February 9, 2010 8:21 am

    Coach,

Were any lessons learned from this year’s shortfalls — Epenesa in particular. He seemed to make us look bad saying we weren’t on him early, and that it may have mad a difference, but we also hear of his lack of interest in UH early on. What’s the story?

  45. 808Chef February 9, 2010 8:25 am

    bulla

you got that right sir! hmm…almost lunch time here in cali. many to think about.

  46. Old Diver February 9, 2010 8:28 am

    Coach Mack,

I like the idea of sending plays in via the receivers because of:

    1. gets the plays in quicker
    2. less wear on the QB’s
    3. forces the rotation of the receivers keeping them fresh.

    Your thoughts?

  47. MauiBoy February 9, 2010 8:30 am

    Coach Mack.

Will UH ever recruit the island of Maui, look at all the kids from Maui going away to play for mainland schools. Look at JoJo Dickson from Maui who made All Wac 2nd team, never got a look from UH. Elvis Kamana-Matagi wanted to go to UH but never got a call from UH until
2 days before signing day, by that time it was too late.

  48. 702WarriorFan February 9, 2010 8:30 am

    Coack Mack,
This past season, the team played FLAT after halftime during the 3rd quarters.

Will you change team/group warm-up after half-time to ensure our team is ready physically?

  49. POIDOG February 9, 2010 8:33 am

Coach Mack who do you think out of the incoming freshman LB’s can possibly start right away at the OLB spot?

  50. Old Diver February 9, 2010 8:34 am

    Coach Mack,

The UH recruiting process was taking hits from some local recruits who could take free shots at you and your coaches for not showing them enough love, knowing you were not able to respond. Have you thought of leaking information to Stephen Tsai who will then responsibly disseminate the information to the public? J/K

  51. Souljah February 9, 2010 8:35 am

    rage777,

The students already have $10 seats and bus service to and from the games…

  52. Pomai February 9, 2010 8:40 am

Is it time that the WAC hires a new commissioner?

  53. bstunna2002 February 9, 2010 8:49 am

    I wish I had $10 seats

  54. Fan-O-War February 9, 2010 8:58 am

    Coach Mack,
Congratulations on a great recruiting class. Recruits that hold up committing to a school in order to pick hats at the end of the process seems like a counterproductive practice. Is there any effort to get the word out to parents and high school coaches to stop the practice?

  55. Slugger February 9, 2010 9:03 am

    Good morning!!!

    Question for Coach Mack:

What changes in the conditioning program do you want to see with Coach Heffernan?

  56. GRM February 9, 2010 9:06 am

    Hi Coach Mack,
Last season was an extremely difficult one with many key injuries thru out. I firmly believe we’ll be better this year. Your expectations? BTW, best of luck this year.

  57. d1島 February 9, 2010 9:16 am

    Great Morning All!

Looking forward to hearing Coach Mack today.
    Have a great day erryboddy!

  58. J-Dog February 9, 2010 9:19 am

    Coach Mack,

Would you please consider bringing back the huge on-field speakers for the conch shell and Eo Na Toa music? I definitely miss the chant that played when the defense needed a huge 3rd/4th down stop. I think it really pumped up the fans and the players and was unique to Hawaii.

I went back and watched some 2007 games I thought the stadium really utilized this music to our advantage.

  59. protector February 9, 2010 9:22 am

    Coach Mack,

Great job by you and your staff on recruiting!!

Although it may seem too early to worry about the last game of the UPCOMING season, I feel there’s an important issue to be addressed. At the Wisconsin game, parents of the Seniors were waiting on the field to greet them with leis BEFORE the start of the game (rather than after).

QUESTION: What can be done to return Senior activities and Celebrations to its rightful place AFTER the game?? Or is this decided by the University & ‘powers that be’?

I believe having such activities before the Big Game undermine and sabotage the required mindset of being prepared to play. Guys should be chomping at the bit & hostile toward invading teams, but instead, our Seniors & other players needed to deal with nostalgiac and bittersweet issues that short-circuited their energy. Was it a decision by the University?

  60. d1島 February 9, 2010 9:22 am

    Coach Mack,

Seeing Coach Payton’s 2nd half opening gamble payoff like it did, I’m wondering how “risk-averse” you are and might we see something similar to open the game against….Oh, I don’t know…let’s say a BCS team with a new coach in a season-opener? 😉

  61. J-Dog February 9, 2010 9:23 am

    Coach,

Since we have so many QB’s, is incoming QB Kevin Spain going to be one of the greyshirt candidates? Or do you see him coming in and competing right away?

  62. anonymous February 9, 2010 9:24 am

    Hello Coach Mack,

In the past I’ve noticed how you sign recruits whom aren’t academically qualified on signing day in your hopes that they raise their grades or test scores in time. Are the risk worth the rewards when you consider that you’ve lost about 7-8 (really good) recruits to JC colleges in the last two prior classes?

  63. al February 9, 2010 9:34 am

i hope that my one question is addressed include the prelude.

    coach mack

last year, there appeared to be a reduced role for both coordinators. they seemed to take it on the chin and did not publicly go against the flow of things for the team’s sake. however, you got to know that deep down inside that must have dented their local boy pride.

how much will your offensive and defensive coordinators be looked upon to help define the direction of this year’s team?

  64. rage777 February 9, 2010 9:36 am

    Thanks Souljah,

I didn’t know that. When I was at UH, they didn’t give us any incentives to go to any games. Maybe the volleyball games, but I went to most of those anyways. I would think that being the same price as a movie would entice the students to go to a football game rather than a movie. Maybe they should make a BOGO on student tickets.

  65. Shoyu808 February 9, 2010 9:40 am

Coach how is the progression of the DE’s doing?

  66. Shoyu808 February 9, 2010 9:43 am

Coach mack do you think to add more athleticism to the offensive line we should move Austin Hansen back to the G position so that we have big guys like Adrain Thomas and Brett Leanord at the T’s?

  67. koakaneâ„¢ February 9, 2010 9:43 am

    good morning to the tsaiko’s

good day and mahalo cMac for being on the tsai and wai show today. also interested on hearing what he has to say about this fball season.

free breakfast at denny’s eh. will it cost a dollar here in the 808. seems when the mainland advertises something we pay some sort of xtra fee. but if it is free charge um gangie.

  68. koakaneâ„¢ February 9, 2010 9:46 am

wow al asking the hard question that should be followed up with a lunch cc bbwhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  69. A-House February 9, 2010 9:48 am

    Hi Coach Mack:

Will you use so-called “trick plays”? I do not consider them trick plays if they are part of your regular package.

  70. A-House February 9, 2010 9:49 am

    Coach Mack:

Will you ever allow a QB to change a play at the line of scrimmage based on what the defense is showing/giving?

  71. postmanke February 9, 2010 9:50 am

Coach – 2 part question – We all know that there is not enough scholarships to go around for the amount of football talent that is here in the Islands. This years outbound recruits leaving the state seem to be an exceptionally talented bunch. Do you think you might have to check what we are doing as recruiters to see if times have changed as far as giving the heavily recruited kids the looks they are getting from other Div 1 programs. Seems like the perception of some recruits around here, by comments in the media, are totally baffled by the lack of attention they are getting at the grass roots, local level.

2nd – In regards to the 2011 class, how much harder is it to sell to a recruit a 4 or 5 year commitment to the University knowing that you only have 2 more years left on your contract? Do you think this will have an impact in your recruiting process, as well as the recruits decision?

ok third one.. When was the last time you have spoken to Mike Leach?

  72. al February 9, 2010 9:51 am

    koakane…

the 1st season: all is forgiven. rookie errors.
the 2nd season: discovery period ends. wise decisions need to be made.
the 3rd season: responsibility and accountability is necessary and needs to be aired.

  73. koakaneâ„¢ February 9, 2010 9:54 am

  75. ponojr February 9, 2010 9:59 am

Of the red shirt QB’s, who is starting to show some potential and could push for some playing when Rausch (this year), Moniz and Austin graduate in two years?

  76. d1島 February 9, 2010 10:01 am

To make it easier on Princess Leila, please make the questions short. We’re also limiting it to one question per post.

  77. d1島 February 9, 2010 10:05 am

    Coach Mack,

Pre-season gaffes last season received a lot of unfavorable national attention. What is being done to avoid a repeat this year?

  78. NYUH February 9, 2010 10:05 am

Coach: What are you going to do to improve clock management during the games this year?

  79. mctruck February 9, 2010 10:06 am

    ST,

Seeing how the coach cannot answer all questions due to time constraints, etc., and just like all the previous Q&A’s posted in the past…how’s about the 1st 20-25 questions posted???, otherwise, it’s just wasted motion, and all we’re reading are tons of questions with no answers anyways.

  80. al February 9, 2010 10:07 am

d1…i get hard time with making my questions short.

maybe the pordagee blood in me. but, to get the right response the right question needs to be posed and often times it requires a little background information. you know, a prelude to the real question.

otherwise, the interviewee can just answer anything they want and quite often not specific to the real question.

  81. anonymous February 9, 2010 10:10 am

PAC 10, here we come. I love the WAC and all but it would be so cool if we were able to make it into the Pac 10. Our women’s volleyball is our best sport I would say but were pretty competitive in most of our sports. Were just having a down time in basketball. But seriously, I don’t know if the Pac 10 would ever choose UH because of costs but it would be exciting to be there. Just like when you play ncaa football and UH does good and you move to the Pac 10, haha.

  95. Old Diver February 9, 2010 12:09 pm

Best thing I learned about Coach Mack today is he is a progressive. Always looking to improve things, get better and willing to make tough calls for those changes to occur. Last thing we need is a Conservative Coach who is satisfied with the status quo and avoids like the plague “CHANGE” for the better.

  96. Souljah February 9, 2010 12:13 pm

    ST,

Can you find out what UH is doing to tap into the Japan/Asian market? Especially with the Pac 10 expanding (probably), this type of proactive actions would be attractive to the Pac 10. Also, if the Pac 10 takes 1 or 2 Wac teams not including UH, it would probably make more sense to go independent with the asain market support and our own network, like Notre Dame, being in the last time zone.

  97. A-House February 9, 2010 12:23 pm

Perhaps, it’s just my computer, but tried to watch the replay and got zonked – stop ‘n go, black screen, etc. Gave up after 5 minutes.

Kinda disappointed that someone has not been able to fix the problem(s) cause this was an important live chat to watch.

  98. postmanke February 9, 2010 12:29 pm

clearly not as visionary as JJ

  99. Pomai February 9, 2010 12:30 pm

Navy vs Notre Dame tix may interest some.

Exciting college football action comes to the nation’s newest stadium as Navy battles Notre Dame on Saturday, October 23 at 12 noon. Don’t miss your chance to witness two iconic teams as they meet in the Meadowlands for the first time since 2004.

    http://www.newmeadowlandsstadium.com/

Navy is coming off a 10-4 campaign, including a seventh-consecutive Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy and a victory over Missouri in the Texas Bowl. The Mids were one of 21 teams with ten or more wins in 2009.

Notre Dame is coming off a 6-6 season and will be led by their new head coach Brian Kelly, who was named 2009 national Coach of the Year after a 12-0 season in Cincinnati. Kelly was named as Notre Dame’s 29th head football coach on December 10, 2009.

    Ticket Prices: $70, $90, $110, $150
Limit: 10 ticket limit per order

  103. Kazz February 9, 2010 12:53 pm

If we start winning more games I think no one or the majority is not gonna care what song the team runs out to.

  104. Ralph February 9, 2010 1:01 pm

    I will

  105. Pomai February 9, 2010 1:11 pm

    I agree Ralph.

  106. Ralph February 9, 2010 1:12 pm

I say pipe in the words and chant of the Haka or Haa and let the fans visualize and energize amongst themselves during the game. There are so many breaks between snaps, got to add to the band, cheerleaders and Rainbow Dancers music to keep the fans at a high energy level. Lots of stadiums and arenas on the mainland, the fans, especially the students don’t sit down through out the game.

why can’t we do this at UH. The SMU women tennis coach is appealing to their fb fans to come out to their match this weekend, he says bull horn, cow bells, taunting, beating on the bleachers, obnoxious behavior, and loud cheers are all acceptable at C USA tennis matches. It helps the home team and the Mustangs face the same adversary behavior on the road.

  107. Ralph February 9, 2010 1:13 pm

he=she. The tennis coach’s name is Lauren, got to be a Wahine.

  108. Ralph February 9, 2010 1:16 pm

like A House, I gave up on the video, tried three times, long pauses and frequent black screen, probably refreshing itself.

  109. Ralph February 9, 2010 1:19 pm

Postmanke, it is difficult to imagine or expect Mac to be a visionary at this time, he has issues with clock management and calling time outs during the game.

  110. postmanke February 9, 2010 1:29 pm

True, be he can visualize songs, new mascots and cheerleaders at away games…

..and on occasion he does envision “more touchdown’s” on national tv games.

This is getting aggravating. If OPM decides to shut gov’t down on Thursday, they might as well go 5 for 5 and shut it down Friday to finish out the week (much like the school districts). Re-open after the three-day weekend.

Was the “live chat” without problems experienced on the replay?

  117. kama krab February 9, 2010 2:28 pm

Ho kind of difficult to watch the replay.

    Someone HELP!!!!!

  118. kama krab February 9, 2010 2:32 pm

You know the way I figure it is,

Forget about being a visionary and just win games. Let the marketing people figure out how to be visionary and Mack just worry about evaluating talent that will get us to the next level. At Macks age this is all I expect of him. No W’s then I don’t think anybody will care about how visionary Mack was.

  119. Old Diver February 9, 2010 2:38 pm

At this point Coach Mack’s vision is to win more games. Of course part of JJ’s vision was to have a Hawaii player hold the record for the most passing yards in NCAA history come hell or high water. You can’t have tradition without winning, or you can but no one would care. Anyway who here has had a discussion about vision with Coach Mack. I suspect no one.

  120. Slugger February 9, 2010 2:44 pm

I’m having problems watching the replay of the Warrior Beat show also. Perhaps it’s the advertisement updates happening simultaneously as the show plays. Is there enough bandwidth on the HA site?

  121. Slugger February 9, 2010 2:48 pm

    CRW,

Enjoy the snow days. Keeping people off the roads when it’s socked in saves lives.

  122. kama krab February 9, 2010 2:50 pm

    And just a thought,

If you want big time nostalgia and you want the crowd to be really into it, you play Israels version of Hawaii 78 over the speaker system and have a chanter like Tony C. do a voice over with a chant about protecting the aina while the boyz are doing the ha’a in the tunnel. You talk about pumping up a stadium full to capacity. That’s the way you do it.

Sorry but I don’t think you need that eo na toa stuff. Keep it Hawaiian as they say.

  123. postmanke February 9, 2010 2:53 pm

the live broadcast streams very nice. The replay has some issues recently. I dont remember it being this bad on earlier shows. I wonder if the video that is being uploaded is encoded at a high bit rate or the achilles heel of webcasting – bottlenecking, is taking place.

Webcasting + more viewers + bottlenecking = more hardware, more bandwidth, more $$

Grateful for this awesome medium and hope you can find a way to monetize it so you guys can get the all the equipment necessary to start bidding on the rights to broadcast UH games. =)

Augie Tulba – should be your color analyst – no holds barred, Hawaii 5-0, full HD and in Pidgin! – that i would pay to view even if we’re losing! it’s recession proof!

  125. kama krab February 9, 2010 2:59 pm

    Oh and not to mention,

It will make the other team shishi pants before they even get on the feild. You talk about intimidating, I don’t think you can get any more intimidating than this.JMHO

  126. postmanke February 9, 2010 3:14 pm

can you imagine walking into an interview for a Div 1 head coaching job and the AD asks “ok coach whatcha gonna do for this program”?

Prospective Coach – “well i have this vision that we need a student mascot like every other college football team in america, I like the song Hawaii 5-0 because it’s unique to this area and no other college team in america runs onto the field with that song and i want the cheerleaders to travel with us on away games because they help us win”

AD – “ok how does $1.1 million sound?”

  127. postmanke February 9, 2010 3:20 pm

just enjoy it for what it is.. =) coz not matter what we’re rooting and watching every game! no matter what!

  128. Old Diver February 9, 2010 3:23 pm

124 – Cheap uninformed shots at Coach Mack solves nothing. While no one deserves a free pass especially with a million dollar salary, insulting remarks about one’s intellect go too far. 140. madeinhawaii February 9, 2010 4:55 pm

I felt that Coach Mack embarrassed himself and the UH, as it’s football coach.. but in no way “insulted” the institution. There’s a difference. As a person, and in his personal relationships with the public that has met him, I think he’s represented well.

I think the likes of Dobelle and HF brought greater insult to the University. Having a personal friend of Lingle sit on the board longer that she was welcome was also a huge insult on the highest level.

Mack made some human foibles, but they weren’t planned or malicious. They weren’t self-ingratiating.

  141. madeinhawaii February 9, 2010 5:01 pm

Now back to selling on ebay.. nyah har har har!!

Sometimes I think trying to buy and sell on ebay is “planned and malicious.” Been trying to sell for 10 days now. Sold all my older camera gear, including the “antique” 40 y/o pocket cameras. Turned around and immediately used that money to buy a 24.6 MP SLR for the wifey. Not too shabby!!

  142. anonymous February 9, 2010 5:15 pm

    Coach Mack is a visionary.

I’ve listened to almost every news conference, including the first day he was hired; Call the Coaches Show, interviews, chats and Warrior Beat Shows and I’ve always came away with the impression that Coach Mack is a visionary. Often times when you listen to him he’s outlines, he presents a blue print of what his plans are for the future, what directions he wants to take, the type of athletes he wants in the program and personal changes he wants to make.

With so many things, good things, associated with the program with his signature on it it would be hard to debate in my opinion that he isn’t a visionary.

And yet almost to fault, I think he’s too much of a visionary. I think he has a lot in common with an evangelist. When he’s speaking, witness the conviction and passion in which he foresees the future for the football program. I think in some respects I see this as good quality.

Additionally, I think it’s too early, and too premature to judge his envisioning against Coach Jones. And it’s not important right now, either.

Granted that some of the things he’s envisioned, like being a perennial WAC contender and top 25 team, hasn’t manifested it will take time for the pieces of the puzzle to all fall into place the coach contends..

However given the short ammount of time he’s been here there are other signs that point that the fruit may be baring . And pointing towards that he is a visionary. And Coach Mack should be acknowledged and credited if they do materialize and yield better results, a good crop.

Like moving Rolovich into calling the plays.

Like having faith in his younger coaches. And wanting all of his coaches to grow and advance in their careers.

Like molding his team’s defense similarly like Miami’s. And with emphasis on team speed in all three phases. This what he said from day one.

Like moving Tommy to strength and conditioning coach. And then proclaiming he’s moving in a better direction because he wants the team to be the best conditioned team in college football.

Like having less of a self reliance on JC’s.

Like going into every high school on the island in getting acquainted with all the coaches and players.

Like putting his signature on camps, kids clinic, coaches clinics, junior day, and speed and quickness days and which are all signs of the coach planting the seeds where the youth is better served so they have better opportunities.

Like taking advantage of all computer technology. With state of the art video system that films practices and games. Where he also wants his players to track their progress, practices and workouts on computers.

Like shedding the bad boy image on the field and off, where in one year the teams penalties have been cut in half; and where there’s less trash talking amongst the players.Where there’s better discipline. Where we also have seen none of his players appearing in the police beat. This is what he said he wanted to do. This is what he wanted to clean up. He did it.

Add also where there’s a greater pride in players graduating with a greater emphasis, now, of players wanting to continuing their education beyond with graduate school. This something he’s stressed from day one and the players are buying into it.

These are small steps that can lead into big steps for the program. All because of the coaches vision.

The X’s and O’s will come around, too, he contends.

And you know what, there’s probably more to come. Hopefully more fruition.

You can shake your head at some of the things that Coach Mack says, lampoon him for this or that and criticize a decision on the field but there’s no denying that the man is a visionary.

  143. wafan February 9, 2010 5:16 pm

Show seems to be playing okay. Just a few blips.

  144. wafan February 9, 2010 5:22 pm

  145. kama krab February 9, 2010 5:23 pm

    Ralphie,

Just doing quick research and from what I know off hand with regards to the Hawaiian language itself the phrase Eo Na Toa does have a Hawaiian meaning to it but if I am not mistaken, the phrase does encompass all of polynesia.

Just as referrence, Eo in hawaiian is kind of like a call to arms. Na Toa I am not really sure about.

So I guess what I am trying to say is, yes you are correct that this phrase does represent Hawaii and it also represents the whole polynesian chain.

  146. kama krab February 9, 2010 5:29 pm

So I guess to kind of change frame of thought,

What I was trying to get to in #122 is, bring in something that everyone is familiar with like Israel version of Hawaii 78.

Everyone knows the lyrics and almost everyone knows what the song speaks about. The song playing will make people even more hype and some people will even start singing along with pride.

And that’s the point that I was trying to make. Sorry if I came off the wrong way. Oh and Ralph no get mad at me. =)

  147. wafan February 9, 2010 5:37 pm

Will Hawai’i be part of the PAC-12? Could be ugly is we are not.

Like going into every high school on the island in getting acquainted with all the coaches and players.

Tough to watch the replay of today’s show but great job again Leila, Stephen and gang.

I am piecing together in his response that Mack’s answer to, “what can the Tsaikos do in the off-season for the football program?” had mostly to do with bridging a gap in funding for summer school.

    Is that right?
    What can be done?

    good post

  157. Kazz February 9, 2010 6:26 pm

Last thing I’ll say about this green vs white vs piped in music vs the live marching band.

People are always gonna complain no matter what, but most of the time winning overshadows all complaints.

Recruits are not coming to a program because of what music or colors a school has, in fact, I think recruits would like a clearly defined identity of what a prospective school is “all about”. I mean, what the hell is up with black, silver, green, and white. Bows, Warriors, Rainbows, Rainbow Wahine…etc…

E’o Na Toa was cool. Then it went to Dallas and got slapped across a white helmet with a red gallopping horse.

In 2007 when the masses weren’t busy gushing about Colt and Co. and BCS possibilities, some pondered the return of the Green and White and some complained the piped in music sounded like someone in the stadium with a loud radio, but hey BLAME the crappy sound system at the stadium on that one. So go figure…

People point out to the “E’O” chant on 3rd down as getting the crowd nuts. No. They could have played a tape of me farting on 3rd down and people would go nuts. Why? Because it was a situation where we were winning or doing well enough to win. Does anyone want to dispute that the crowd noise at certain times against Navy and Cincy the past two seasons is “SIGNIFICANTLY” less than that against the times in the past when “E’O” was being pumped in on 3rd down situations? Nope…

Win and people will be happy.

Going forward…I think UH admin needs to micro manage all this off the field stuff and finally put a stamp on the identity of our school.

In the meantime, let’s win football games.

Garans, we go to the Hawaii Bowl last year and win it, this would be a faded discussion.

  158. Kazz February 9, 2010 6:29 pm

    Kama,

The way the band incorporated “Hawaii 78” leading into “Hawaii Five O” was pretty cool yeah? 😎

  161. uhwarriors February 9, 2010 6:40 pm

The replay of the show is bad again. I can’t watch them live and the replays are almost always bad. I’m finding watching the replays are just not worth it.

  162. A-House February 9, 2010 6:52 pm

Certain Hawaii fans will not be willing to participate in yells, cheers, etc because they are still “stuck” to the “old ways/culture” of being quiet and not bring attention to oneself.

I firmly believe that this notion is changing and the comparison to the mainland schools is a far way off – look at the south, they are still fighting the Civil War and that’s a long time ago.

It would help if more “wins” come this way and more people opt to attend the game in person. The younger fans may grow up faster then anticipated and this would be a welcome signt, but it will not happen in my life time.

Change, for whatever reason, takes time. Winning goes a long way to hasten its appearance.

Really, what can be done to create a tidal wave of change?

  163. Ralph February 9, 2010 6:53 pm

    hey gang

i never get to watch the show and i no can make da replay work, so i’m asking you all

whats the verdict on our mascot?

whats the verdict on who is doing what with the OC and DC.
whos is actually calling the shots on D scheme during the game?
in other words, who is doing what during actual game time?
in the second quarter? in the fourth quarter?

who is gonna call in the kickers?

and most most importantly, are the players gonna run along the sidelines, slapping fans hands as they head for the tunnel. i mean, if the gestapo gonna act up, like they’re garanz to do 5 minutes before half and five minutes before end of game, kicking the kids away from the tunnel, putting their big gestapo bods in the viewing lanes at the end of the game, i mean, fair questions….

  167. postmanke February 9, 2010 7:03 pm

142 – “Additionally, I think it’s too early, and too premature to judge his envisioning against Coach Jones. And it’s not important right now, either.”

Next time you watch a Warrior football game look at the field, look at the jerseys, look at the football teams name, The Warriors! this was all because some coach had a little vision, now legendary vision. simple things like vision may be unimportant to some but to others that have the vision, the creative mind, it can transform a program, a sinking budget, a community, a state, a region, so much so that it enables you to win championships and have multi million dollar payouts for playing in a bowl game. Premature to judge? really? take as much time as you need. It’s Legendary! you can go 30 more years, this wont be topped!

  168. RedZone February 9, 2010 7:04 pm

    😆

But yeah, you going softball on Thursday?

  171. expat February 9, 2010 7:13 pm

Stephen and the Princess do such a good job on the show that it is a real shame that the replays are painful to watch for purely technical reasons.

I too think that Mack is a visionary… clearly he has a vision for what he wants out of the team. We should all be proud that one of his highest goals is to graduate the players and that he is delivering on that goal.

This is a college team. The whole point is for players to get an education and degree. Some schools do that extremely well but for many of the “elite” programs the academic aspect is an afterthought. Those programs don’t really care about their players. Mack clearly does.

When you establish high goals and expect excellence from your players on and off the field the players will rise to the occasion — or not. But the ones who follow will learn from the ones who failed.

It would have been pretty easy for Mack to have glossed over any problems Graunke was having and just started him in 2008. How many coaches would have just gotten “special tutors” or whatever they needed to ensure that the guy who had the most experience and knew the system just played. No question Tyler would have been the guy.

But you know what? Mack can wake up in the morning and look at himself in the mirror knowing that he didn’t throw away his principles to make the road easier. It is easy to respect that and it is worth more than a an extra win here and there.

I didn’t catch all of the replay but I did get a snippet about what Mack said regarding recruiting — that they want to be ethical and not string guys along. Good deal.

  172. Kazz February 9, 2010 7:13 pm

    Wow!

The lasting effect of the 2007 season is really starting to become evident right about now.

    BH2,

unless the current mascot enrolls at UH, he may not be the mascot much longer..

  175. Ralph February 9, 2010 7:57 pm

I would think all college coaches want their players to graduate, doesn’t the APR impact future recruiting numbers and therefore the life of the program. Is that vision, caring, etc. or simply survival of the program to continue progressing or suffer the fate of San Jose State because they loss 7 scholarships due to their APR.

APR I may be wrong about the abbreviation but you get the essence of what I am referring to.

  176. Ralph February 9, 2010 8:00 pm

Kazz I’ll be there on Friday night for the Stanford game.

  177. Ralph February 9, 2010 8:05 pm

I asked Shauna for a transcript of the show, Redzone makes the same request from Stephen. We’ll be surprised, Morifuji will deliver, it’s a matter of pride-never leave anything on the table, get the job done right.

  178. postmanke February 9, 2010 8:09 pm

I think come mid or fall 2010 there is some sort of new metrics chart, rankings whatever you want to call it to see publicly where each school stands. I believe the rankings will be more on the head coach – i guess to make them more accountable. – they are saying it’s unfair system to judge by – but judge they will! I think a transfer is just as bad as not graduating.

Coach Nash – feeling for you!

Should be an interesting ranking system

  179. Kazz February 9, 2010 8:09 pm

Bob Coolen was on the Sports Animals today.

-With the anticipation of Kelly Majam’s debut, Jenna Rodriguez (who will be starting at LOF) is supposed to “quietly” raise some eyebrows. Coolen likes her strong arm and “mound presence” and says she’s a real competitor. Originally wanted to come to UH as a freshman but couldn’t get in (academics?) so she went the JC route, did her work, and found her way back to her original destination of choice as a Rainbow Wahine.

-Ricketts will start against McNeese State, Kaia Parnaby will make her UH debut against Texas A&M CC at 5pm on Friday night and Ricketts will again get the nod later that evening against Stanford at 7pm. On Saturday, not sure at this point.

-Coolen likes the fact that Rodriguez adds to the pitching depth, obviously something lacking last season, and the first road trip Rodriguez will see some time starting on the mound.

-Coolen notes that recruiting in Australia will continue as always. Notes it’s not that hard to get Aussies out here as they “HATE” cold weather and Hawaii is a “short” plane ride for them.

-RPI this season will be in UH’s favor for an NCAA at large bid if they can do what the pre-season WAC polls predict (finishing 3rd in the WAC) or surpassing that and winning the WAC tournament. Lots of PAC 10 competition in the Vegas tourney as well as overall top 25 teams to go up against.

-Kauai High standout Jessica Iwata is competing for the starting SS position and is hitting “very well” right now at practice.

  180. Kazz February 9, 2010 8:13 pm

    Ralph,

Will see you there then. Just posted above that Coolen says Parnaby will be starting the Friday 5pm game against Texas A&M CC and Ricketts will start against #10 Stanford.

I can’t make it at the 5pm as I don’t get off work until 6.

Kinda curious to see the lefty freshie Aussie in action.

(Ok that was freakin’ lame, but yeah…)

  181. OldDiver February 9, 2010 8:22 pm

Mack said Vili is not the mascot but would be all in favor of a student being one, but he also said the responsibility of choosing one is up to someone other than himself. He also said offensive play calling where the QB runs over to the sidelines is too slow a process. He wants to use hand signals to speed up the game and make it harder on defenses. It was also his choice to move in another direction concerning the strength and conditioning coach. He mentioned Fresno is good a special teams because their starters are on them. They brought in a kicker to compete with Enos and he believes special teams will be better as time goes by because recruiting is getting better. After Moniz he really like Graves and Shutter at QB and may use them in special situations, he also said Nielsen is coming along nicely. He is really high on Paipai and Billy Ray Stutzmann who he considers the anchors of his first two recruiting classes. ST got Mack to say he will onside kick on the first play against USC.

  186. Garret February 9, 2010 9:27 pm

I cannot see the WB show live due to work and I’m really sad to read that the technical problems with the replay have not been fixed. Given how long the show has been going on, this really should have been fixed. I guess I’ll wait a day or two before trying the replay and hope it gets fixed by then.

  187. Garret February 9, 2010 9:31 pm

The LA Observer has a *very* detailed article about the Pac-10 expansion issues. One interesting thing to note is that a Pac-10 expansion to 12 teams would mean that each Pac-10 team would have an extra nonconference game…that could be good for UH. However, none of the Pac-10 teams would be available late in the season due to the conference championship game.

adding two more teams could allow the conference to earn a larger television contract and provide more revenue for the schools. It would also allow the Pac-10 to have a lucrative football championship game. While playing nine conference games sounds good at first blush, it’s one more than every other conference in football. That means five Pac-10 teams are guaranteed to have an extra loss, while teams in the SEC and Big-12 fill their non-conference schedule with lackluster mid-majors or I-AA schools.

The Verdict: Without Colorado, I don’t think Pac-10 expansion happens. At the end of the day, I think Colorado would ultimately move to the conference, but it won’t be an easy decision for them.

As for the second team, my money would be on Utah. Nebraska is really enticing, but it’s probably just too far away. That being said, Saint Louis University is in the Atlantic 10, Boston College is in the ACC, and South Florida and Marquette are in the Big East, so there are plenty of awkward conference arrangements out there. Maybe Nebraska would be a good fit after all.

  188. Garret February 9, 2010 9:32 pm

    The article mentioned UH:

Hawaii: This school has had its good teams over the years, but I don’t think Pac-10 teams want this long flight on their schedule annually.

China found 170 more tons of tainted milk powder that should have been destroyed in 2008 were instead reused! Despite the order to destroy all the tainted milk powder (after more than 300,000 children were sickened and at least six died from the contamination), they found that the dangerous dairy is *still* being sold by at least 5 companies all throughout China.

Just finished watching the replay of the WB show with Coach Mac, streaming was very good without stops and jerks like earlier tries. Coach Mac was very good in answering the questions. His enthusiasm for the team is making me feel very very good about this year’s team. Good job Coach, ST and Leila. g’night all….

    Pipe Music vs. Band….

Personally I don’t have a particular preference. However the Hawaii 5-0 thing always seemed a little odd to me as it doesn’t seem to have any meaning to the University..or does it? If it does I have never heard the story behind it.

I mean what if Wisconsin turned their song from whatever it is now to the opening sequence of Laverne & Shirley….?

One thing that I wish the band did though is line up on both sides of the entrance area in some kind of clearly defined and thought out formation. They always line up on the sidelines in this “giant ink blotch” formation….Looks kinda messy imo.

Then again this should be the least of our concerns right? haha.

In case anybody wonders, there will be no transcript of the show, because I’m not going to transcribe it.
And I doubt anybody can make Leila or Shauna transcribe it, either.
However, if anybody is willing to volunteer, they’re more than welcome.

  204. Stephen Tsai February 9, 2010 10:34 pm

Anyway, Scott Morifuji handles the technical aspect of the show.
You’re free to call him tomorrow morning and ask what the problem is.

Ralph – brew’s in hiding. No can handle his TarHeels losing. Hoyas win two, lose one. Big East is one brutal conference. Hoyas in the top 20 and still in 4th place.

“uhfanzonly” of the WSN board summarized the intervew with Coach Mack.

    LINK: http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=219&f=1136&t=5596299

FOR THOSE WHO MISSED OUT HERES SOME OF WHAT COACH MAC SAID…

Really high on Tommy Heffernon..Wants everyplayer to have a computerized goal because kids today are more into computers than paper.

-He doesnt want everybody doing the same THING and wants each positions do things that are important to whatever they have to do like I guess the K doesnt have to build up his upper body strength since all he does is KICK the ball.

..Wants this team to be the best conditioned team in the nation, seemed like he wanted Heffernon more than Mel del lura.

SAID HE IS REASIGNNING SOME COACHING POSITONS THIS YEAR BUT NEXT YEAR IT WILL BE SOLIDIFIED.

    RECRUITING PART
-Said after 07 we lost the offense so we had to recruit the offense and in 08 we lost the Defense so we had to recruiting heavy on Defense…SAID HE HAD ONLY 22 SCHOLARSHIPS TO GIVE OUT THIS YEAR.

The stars of his 3 CLASSES ARE PAIPAI..BILLY RAY-STUDZMANN..DAVE LEFOTU.

When UH recruits hawaii, sends 2-3 coaches to every School so probably high school in hawaii and asks the coaches who there top players are so and so forth.

THE TOP 100 PLAYERS THEN GO TO UH’S JR. DAY with their families.
Funny part of the show..Coach having the bob marley ringtone “Every little thing is gonna be alright” lol funny

-Says he tries to use Ethics in recruitng tells players that they offered 5 guys but only have 1 scholarship so whoever commits first get’s it.

…….Then he talked about how the QB doesnt really change the play at the line but CAN IF CAN HANDLE.

GA-He was getting to that point before he went down with an injury…Really starting to get a hold of this offense.

    DE’S
Paipai SHOULD START AT ONE OF THE ENDS THIS YEAR IS AT 255LBS NOW.

Ervin Sione got BIG FAST he’s now 230lbs…Also said that now all of them have been in the system for a full year so the experince should pay off.

WANTS TO PICK UP THE PACE ON THE OFFENSE TOLD THE OFFENSIVE COACHES THAT.
Doesnt like how Moniz goes to the sidelines on eachplay to get the play call MAC wants everything to go faster so he said there gonna put in some no huddle stuff but probably signal it in but wants the offfense to move faster to confuse the defense.

REALLY LOOKING FOWARD TO USC THIS YEAR..Philosophy this year is “take one game at a time”
Said the first game needs to be packed.

MAC SAID A CHANGE TO A STUDENT MASCOT WOULD BE GOOD BUT LIKES VILI…Wants the cheerleaders to go with them on the road and the band but the economy is down.

DOESNT LIKE WHITEOUTS EVER SINCE THE SUGARBOWL..Also said he’ll tell eveyone what the players will wear for color cordination.

    SENIOR NIGHT
he’s gonna change that…at the start their gonna intro the seniors WITHOUT THE PARENTS then the team.
    AFTER THEN THE SENIOR WALK.
wants to make it faster than last year….Doesnt plan it but wants it faster.

LOVE TO SEE MORE STUDENTS AT THE GAME.

LETULI,SATELE,ROCKY have their papers in so the NCAA has to decide if they can have an extra year.

JOVANTE TAYLOR is gone so he’s going to UH’s pro-day.

AS FOR MIKE LEACH COMING TO HAWAIII…NOPE.

    REDSHIRT QB’S.
Rausch-wants to get the medical redshirt for next year
looks like DAVID GRAVES and CAYMAN SHUTTER are the 2 leading the young guys.
    He really likes DAVID GRAVES.

MALCOM LANE IS SUSPENDED FROM THE TEAM…BROKE TEAM RULES.

    SPECIAL TEAMS
Since CHRIS TORMEY took over UH’s special teams have been way BETTER THAN the year before.
GOT A K TO COMPETE WITH ENOS.
-said that since most of the guys on special teams are coming back THEY get more experince that will be benefit this year…

  216. Jason February 9, 2010 11:44 pm

What do you think I do on Furlough Fridays, party? I get to catch up on sleep, but then I’m grading papers, creating worksheets, doing my HPU assignments …

  217. Jason February 9, 2010 11:45 pm

Those were ten-minute radio interviews that I recorded on tape and replayed over and over. Compare that to a very, very long video interview that does not allow for rewind. 😀

  218. Jason February 9, 2010 11:47 pm

That’s a pretty good summary, and all I had to do was read it. 🙂

  219. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc February 9, 2010 11:54 pm

Still working on mascot stuff and should have a report on what are the options and alternatives within a week.

Again, does anyone want our volleyball tickets for February 19 – we’re doing the baseball season opener that night and will hele on over to the Center if the game ends by 9 pm – just in case the match is still going on.

Look forward to seeing some Tsai-kos this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at the softball games.

Does anyone have information about the radio broachcast schedules for softball & volleyball this week. Will both be broadcast?

    Sleep? Why? You’re not 30 yet…. 🙂

Math teachers grade papers? Do your worksheets require batteries or electricity? 😛 But seriously, I remember those days. Good luck!

…but cutting out dates and skipping a few meals might give you transcription time…. 🙄

  222. idono February 10, 2010 12:13 am

If UH wants to get into the Pac-10 they need to start selling themselves now and do everything possible to assure that probability.

Starters: Hawaii would be an attractive addition to many team sports from Baseball, Softball, Women’s and Men’s Volleyball, Men’s Basketball, Water sports, and Football. Some other schools might only have football.

The sell is recruiting for current Pac-10 teams can be improved farther east due to the sell of Hawaii. Many young people would like playing in the conference with the ability to go to Hawaii at least 2 times in their college careers. On top of that traveling to Asia too. The time traveling to Hawaii or Asia can be a negative but if promoted with the help of businesses, can create an international following with Hawaii being the bridge from the west coast to Asia. Each Pac-10 school also will need to promote in having parts of a country to identify them as their team or school from the U.S.

Imagine 4 teams from basketball, baseball, volleyball traveling together to Japan, China, Korea, playing in a tournament format once a year. If 12 teams rotate 4 schools every 3rd year. If sold properly with television imagine the possibilities. Imagine having a championship game for any sport somewhere in Asia. A reward for players playing in a championship game in Asia will definetly motivate and excite athletes to be part of a Pac-10 school.

As far as additional cost to the current Pac-10 teams they will need to be assured that it will be minimal due to commitments from business on the west coast, Hawaii and Asian countries. The Pac-10 must see the risk to be minimal and with greater exposure & interest, the chances of greater financial rewards can be astronomical.

This is a far fetched vision but bottom line is, if Hawaii wants to get into the Pac-10, action and commitments need to be made so things can be presented as reasons why, Hawaii can enhance the future of the Pac-10 both athletically and educationally with Hawaii being the bridge to Asia and the Pac-10.

    Good Morning Gang…

Wow what is with these boys screwing themselves. C’mon Malcolm Lane, you would think you had your stuff together brother. You got a bright future as a kick returner and deep threat guy for us this year. Plus it’s your last…sad. I hope its nothing too serious though but missing time will only hurt you my bruddah. Please do yourself a favor and get back on track, would love to see you burning down the field into the endzone this year…

Wouldn’t Royce Pollard have the upper-hand in this situation? My choice would be Billy Ray though…

  227. Pauoa Boy February 10, 2010 4:50 am

Wow Earvin Sione is 230lbs now, that was quick…
Paipai is going to dominate I’m telling you…another Al Noga clone resurfacing itself…

  231. Inspect Articulate February 10, 2010 6:03 am

Great post. It is clear You have a great deal of unused capacity, which you have not turned to your advantage.

The way you write shows you have a need for other people to like and admire you, and yet you tend to be critical of yourself.

It seems to me that while While you have some personal weaknesses you are generally able to compensate for them.

  232. protector February 10, 2010 6:33 am

Mahalo to ‘sportsbow’ for the summary!

Hope Lane takes Pauoa Boy’s sentiments to heart. Would like to see his (Lane’s) speed utilized. If not though, we seem to have enough depth / weapons to challenge opponents’ D. They will have to recruit a number of receivers next year, though (to replace the seniors leaving).

Crossing my fingers that Rocky, Brashton & Pepa will all be on the field against the Trojans, but because we’re dealing with the NCAA, won’t hold my breath.

  233. bighilofan2 February 10, 2010 6:34 am

After AL and Kekoa (w/da slippah in hand) get through reaching through to Dwain Williams, perhaps they should take the short walk over to speak with Malcolm Lane too.

You need to thank “uhfanzonly” of the WSN board. He’s the one that summarized the intervew with Coach Mack.

I guess we all had the same problem in viewing the interview replay. He’s the one that saved the day. All I did was copy and paste of what he said.

Is Mike Sealy to UCLA a done deal?

  248. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc February 10, 2010 9:47 am

Chawan-Cut: yes, we’re going to the Grand Skan fundraiser; however, we aren’t part of the group that usually plans various get-togethers at functions or at games & matches – usually off the blog. Perhaps someone will contact you directly.
    .
Hope to see you at tonight’s game. BTW – I saw several fluorescent green raincoasts on state DOT workers yesterday in the upper pali area. They are really bright.

I Will have to come back again when my course load lets up – even so I am taking your RSS feed so I can read your site offline. Thanks.

Your site design is a bit off in Galeon. Even So I like your website. I may have to install a “normal” browser just to enjoy it. 🙂
