Club med

Here’s the Warriors’ medical team:

Team physician — Dr. Gale Prentiss

Orthopedic surgeon — Dr. Mark Santi

Orthopedic surgeon — Dr. Elizabeth Ignacio

Head athletic trainer — Eric Okasaki

Football trainer — Brian Wong

Notes: The Warriors will only have a nurse on the sidelines for home games. … The hydration specialist has left UH.

It is interesting that Jim Donovan, who is supposed to be on indefinite paid leave, is no longer listed in the directory on the UH athletic department Web site.

It also is interesting the directory lists two assistant equipment managers but no equipment manager.

The Warriors are waiting for status resolutions for:

• Jordan Pu‘u-Robinson, who would compete with Paipai Falemalu at the hybrid defensive end/linebacker position. He is allowed to practice, but he has not been cleared to play. Pu‘u-Robinson transferred from Washington State because of family reasons. A transfer usually has to sit out a season, but he is seeking a special-circumstance exemption. He relinquished a football scholarship and significant role to move back to Hawaii.

• Mike Milovale, who is projected to compete at tackle or guard. Milovale is in Hawaii, but is waiting verification of his junior-college transcripts.

• Ronald Fields, a cornerback who is in the same situation as Milovale. He’s also here.

• Justin Turner, a cornerback who learned he still needed to complete coursework at a junior college. Turner is back on the mainland.

Head coach Norm Chow said he will hold roster spots for Fields and Turner through Saturday. Training camp moves to Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam next Sunday.

JMHO but need a full-time nutritionist.

  3. papajoe2 August 5, 2012 7:57 am

    top 100

  4. Bugaz August 5, 2012 7:59 am

I nominate Kekaula as Team Nutritionist.

  5. Bugaz August 5, 2012 8:00 am

The o line would be healthy!

  6. Ben A Lurker August 5, 2012 8:04 am

    top ten!

  7. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2012 8:13 am

Well, they now will have two training-table meals and more money for the third meal so there won’t be a problem with quantity.

  8. Shoko August 5, 2012 8:14 am

    lol

  9. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2012 8:17 am

We could ask Al to be the nutritionist, but he lost 20 pounds.

  10. Shoko August 5, 2012 8:17 am

I find it disconcerting that we need to know who is on the Warriors’ medical team. Are we expecting alot of injuries this season?

  11. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2012 8:18 am

    Nobody trusts a skinny chef.

  12. Shoko August 5, 2012 8:19 am

Whats the average calorie intake for an O-linemen. 5000?

  13. Shoko August 5, 2012 8:22 am

    According to one source.

“Football players need about 50 calories per 2.2 pounds (one kilogram) of body weight, according to the National Strength and Conditioning Association.”

    Shoko:

Actually, there were a couple of changes. I think there was a second physician last year.

And Dr. Santi, whose wife is Lori, has an official title. I think he worked on Ostrowski’s heel last year.

  15. al August 5, 2012 8:26 am

ummm. milovale is from hartnell jc and fields from san mateo jc.

  16. al August 5, 2012 8:27 am

yes…i, too would keep dr. ignacio around.

  17. Bugaz August 5, 2012 8:28 am

Wow someone’s Annoyed…QBs should be feeding o linemen

  18. al August 5, 2012 8:29 am

i may have lost that weight, but, i still love to cook (and eat).

and no, i am not yet skinny (enough).

    hahaha.

  19. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2012 8:29 am

    Al:

Oh, my, now I know why the transcripts are taking so long.

  20. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2012 8:30 am

    Bugaz:

    Hungry people are unhappy people.

  21. Bugaz August 5, 2012 8:31 am

Hope these guys get finished with their transfers

  22. MattyBoy August 5, 2012 8:31 am

    ST,

Is it even possible for Turner to get everything he needs done by Saturday? Highly unlikely right?

  23. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2012 8:32 am

Saw DPK yesterday. He lost some weight, too.

    I also saw “Laura.”

  24. Bugaz August 5, 2012 8:32 am

Yes I know! So is hungry gout people that cannot eat what they want

  25. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2012 8:34 am

    MattyBoy:

I keep asking if he’s out. They keep saying, no, he’s not.

I think Grimes and Phillips help ease his absence. Jackson also has been playing a little corner. But they can do more things if they have Turner and Fields in camp.

  26. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2012 8:36 am

Does gout affect only the feet? Or does it hinder arms, hands, etc?

  27. Shoko August 5, 2012 8:36 am

Glad to hear that some Tsai-ko’s are focusing on health. By the way, how is HawaiianBod doing?

  28. Padron August 5, 2012 8:37 am

We, the public, would like to know what happened with the Stevie Wonder fiasco. It almost feels like there is something to hide with no information being released. More and more it feels like Jim Donovan is being hung out to dry like the scapegoat.

  29. Shoko August 5, 2012 8:38 am

Gout usually affects people with suffer from Diabetes, no? Isn’t it a circulation problem?

  30. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2012 8:38 am

I think UH needs an office organizer. For instance, the business office and the box office are in separate buildings.

  31. MattyBoy August 5, 2012 8:40 am

Hopefully everything works out and they both can get here with no problem…if so, things will be interesting.

  32. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2012 8:43 am

The investigation has gone beyond just the Stevie Wonder incident.

  33. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2012 8:44 am

I have no idea how to rate a cornerback, but Dee Maggitt still gets a lot of work.

  34. Garret August 5, 2012 8:44 am

It will be interesting to see which of the transfers can get cleared in time to join the Warriors when their camp moves. Their getting cleared could make a difference in UH’s season, especially considering the depth needed to get through the season.

  35. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2012 8:45 am

Also, Ijumaa Armstrong was restored to the roster yesterday.

I wasn’t aware he was off the roster.

Even with Armstrong, and including Fields and Turner, there still is some roster room. I think UH would like to set the final 102 roster before they leave for Pearl Harbor.

  36. Garret August 5, 2012 8:45 am

Having JD removed from the directory sure sounds like a decision has been made, whether or not the investigation is over.

  37. Shoko August 5, 2012 8:46 am

I assume en entire AD audit is in progress.

  38. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2012 8:47 am

There’s been some behind-the-scenes movement this summer, too.

Daniel Arakaki, who handled … heck, I’m not sure exactly what he handled, something to do with scholarships … is now the pool guy.

And there’s someone added to compliance. Not sure who that person is because they ran out of office space, so they put a black partition around the desk that used to belong to the AD’s secretary.

  39. Wes'side Warrior August 5, 2012 8:47 am

    Howzit, everyone!

Hope we’re working strong with those we already have, and not banking on the bonuses. If they get cleared to play, then all the better. But…

Good to see and recognize those on the medical team. They keep our boyz going, and keep them FROM going, according to circumstances. Can’t do it without them! Kudos, gang!

Always seems like we take forever to hear of clearances from the NCAA.

  40. Shoko August 5, 2012 8:48 am

If a decision has been made, then I guess we should hear something soon.

  41. Garret August 5, 2012 8:48 am

Nice feature on Chad Owens, who is having a great season.

Owens is on pace to become the first CFL player to eclipse 4,000 yards in a season. But, even better, he is finally getting the opportunity to showcase his talent as a receiver.

“Oh, man. It’s a dream. It’s a dream,” said Owens, smiling wistfully, Tuesday, after the team went through walk-through drills in preparation for Monday’s game against the B.C. Lions.

ST ~ I nominate Mrs ‘C’ for the hydration specialist position…post mortem haste.

  44. Garret August 5, 2012 8:50 am

    Another feature on Chad.

There are other ways to get the same kind of high. Chad Owens gets his fix at work.

The miniature dynamo of the Toronto Argonauts could eventually force coaches to rethink the premise that a returner with his quickness can’t also be effective on offence, because Owens is on a pace to rewrite his own piece of CFL history which already was pretty astounding.

  45. Bryson August 5, 2012 8:50 am

ST any word as to why Jordan Monico is no longer on the team I thought he did pretty well on special teams I thought he was on his way to getting a scholarship from Mack also?

  46. Garret August 5, 2012 8:52 am

Ryan Mouton is finally healthy and there has been a lot of good reports published about him in training camp. Here is what his coach recently said.

Ryan Mouton, this is the first time he has been able to get out and prove what he can do, he is looking really good. He is a chippy guy, a guy looking to make plays, a physical guy, a guy who can bring a little attitude to the back end too.

Med staff good. Mahalo for all they do. Talking to Kapakahi yesterday and he makes a good case for a nutrtionist.

  57. al August 5, 2012 9:21 am

it will be nice to see a fully 100% ryan mouton on the gridiron for once. even during his two years here he displayed excellence inspite of the fact that he was never totally healthy.

  58. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2012 9:28 am

Thanks, Al. Yes, the wife is suffering from vertigo.

  59. Hon2255 August 5, 2012 9:31 am

It’s a bit disserving to the docs that helped including eye docs, who donated free time on their own and also donated glasses to athletes who can’t afford them not to mention other physicians ,and medical people are no longer part if program as directed by dr. Prentiss who is now burning a lot of bridges in the medical community coming from California as a outsider she needs to appreciate all the professionals who have volunteered their own time and donated to the programs for the good of the programs.

  60. al August 5, 2012 9:31 am

hartnell cc and san mateo cc are all part of that same cali cc system. perhaps the recent cutbacks by state of cali’s upper educational system has removed many admin positions. they could release the transcripts by late august 2013.

imagine that they were going to cut the football program from the san francisco area cc.

  61. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2012 9:34 am

I do not know why Monico is not on the team.

But from what I understand, the philosophy is that everyone on the roster has a chance to compete for a job. They don’t want to keep a walk-on who won’t play much because that player would eventually become frustrated.

  62. al August 5, 2012 9:34 am

wena…no worry its only temporary. the boss had this decades ago and she said she never had a reoccurrence since the initial onslaught.

(although the rest of the family believes otherwise…snark, snark)

  63. al August 5, 2012 9:37 am

i thought it had to do with his constant bouncing around from one position to another that he too got frustrated as did lolotai.

these guys who physically are “tweeners” should have a position called “st” for special teams and work hard at that craft.

didn’t fenderson make a careee out of that in the nfl as did mosi?

  64. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2012 9:38 am

It is true there are many medical people who donate their time and skills.

The above are the ones who are on paid staff (although they also donate a lot of their time and skills, too).

  65. jm2375 (Infuse) August 5, 2012 9:40 am

Howzit Tsaikos from a slightly chilly Santa Monica Beach.

UH has a nutrition dept. Perhaps they could at least give a grad student some experience while they prepare for their RD exam.

  66. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2012 9:41 am

There are some answers that are apparent but best left unsaid, such as when asked: “Why doesn’t my kid play more?”

  67. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2012 9:44 am

McMackin had a philosophy that “this ain’t P.E. football.”

But he did keep a lot of people. It took one player to have a breakdown and attack another player to get cut.

  68. Ipu Man August 5, 2012 9:45 am

Garret, thanks for the info …especially luv’d:

“…on pace to break Pinball Clemons’ record of 3,840 combined yards.”

    Go Pinball!

  69. Ipu Man August 5, 2012 9:54 am

Wes’side Warrior, Georgia suspensions not as tough as UH…

    Nor Notre Dame’s…

    But gotta trust Chow…

  70. al August 5, 2012 10:09 am

st…time to put the mystery guy to bed.

  71. MattyBoy August 5, 2012 10:19 am

Yeah since there is not going to be any mystery guy anymore, can we now know who we were after?

  72. lava August 5, 2012 10:20 am

This may not be a popular sentiment, but there are some guys on the football team that should probably consider transferring if they ever hope to get any playing time. David Graves is first on that list. June Jones made the transfer and ended up in the NFL. Chow has tunnel vision, and Graves is outside the tunnel, and Graves isn’t the only one. I feel bad for the guys recruited for a different scheme and are now left to fill out the roster.

Re #60, maybe everybody has the chance to compete for a job, but it ain’t necessarily a starting job.

  73. John Fitzgerald Byers August 5, 2012 10:23 am

While Donovan’s name is gone, Rich Sheriff’s name remains. The “investigation” goes beyond the concert deal? Good. While they are at it the 3rd, 5th, 6th, and 32nd names listed in the online staff directory need to be evaluated on what it is they really do and what real impact their efforts are.

  74. Pauoa Boy August 5, 2012 10:24 am

Don’t see why Monico wouldn’t be bringing the boom on special teams like he did previously…

  75. Last Call August 5, 2012 10:24 am

There are times when I feel like the updating and overall maintenance of the UH athletic web site has been outsourced to India.

  76. Last Call August 5, 2012 10:27 am

Isn’t it time UH gives us an update on the Wonder Blunder investigation or is it being swept under the rug ?

  77. RedZone August 5, 2012 10:36 am

If it is the UH Athletics department directory on their website, Rockne replaced Donovan’s name right after the switch announcement was made. I think it was made within a days period. I remember looking at the directory at that time to see who else was in it. I was kinda surprised at the time because I could not remember when changes at UHs website came so quickly before.

  78. Shoko August 5, 2012 10:39 am

Wouldn’t be unusual for players to transfer after a coaching change. Moreso when a coaching change is accompanied with a system change. For Graves, I think his skill set enables him to play other positions such as on defense.

  79. Pauoa Boy August 5, 2012 10:40 am

So Graves pretty much put himself in the Grave as far as getting a chance to see any time as our QB. So what’s next? Does he stick it out or change back to being a Safety or transfer? If Higgins or Schroeder is already the 1 and 2 I don’t see Graves seeing the field this year or next. I mean with both Higgins and Schroeder back plus Graham eligible, then Ikaika plus Zwhalen coming in looks like Graves is the odd man out.

  80. Shoko August 5, 2012 10:44 am

Even Wiki has Freitas as UHAD.

  81. Bigislandkurt August 5, 2012 10:46 am

Gout is a disease that can affect more than just the ankles. It can also attack the toes (Big toe especially), knees, fingers, elbows. It is an ailment caused by heightened uric acid levels in the body. Gout’s close cousin — Kidney stones — are also caused by uric acid. These levels are controlled by avoiding certain foods that may cause the uric acid to spike. Of course, many of us have heard about “rich” foods like shellfish and pork being the culprit of gout. However, there are other seemingly “healthy” foods that can cause a spike in uric acid too. Things like tomatoes, oatmeal, and mushrooms can also cause episodes. Everyone’s body is different and all gout sufferers can have different triggers. There are medication to deal with attacks that work pretty well. If those don’t work, then there is a daily med that works quite well for folks. In closing, Gout sucks.

  82. gigi-hawaii August 5, 2012 10:47 am

Too bad for Donovan. What bad luck! Wish him only the best.

  83. Da Punchbowl Kid August 5, 2012 10:49 am

    Take care, Wena!

  84. Shoko August 5, 2012 10:50 am

Wonder what age group is mostly affected by gout.

  85. gigi-hawaii August 5, 2012 10:52 am

Hawaiian Bod: Hope you recover real soon! Prayers for you, brother.

  86. Shoko August 5, 2012 10:52 am

    Too add what BIK said:

“In the United States, gout is twice as likely in African American males as it is in European Americans. Rates are high among the peoples of the Pacific Islands and the Māori of New Zealand, but rare in Australian aborigines, despite a higher mean concentration of serum uric acid in the latter group. It has become common in China, Polynesia, and urban sub-Saharan Africa. Some studies have found attacks of gout occur more frequently in the spring. This has been attributed to seasonal changes in diet, alcohol consumption, physical activity, and temperature.”

  87. Shoko August 5, 2012 10:56 am

Best wishes and a speedy recovery for HB. 🙂

  88. tommui August 5, 2012 11:00 am

    AL #53 – after a fashion …

The MDs released me for driving (more fool they…)

Going to see another MD re left leg but am able (more or less) to hobble here and there.

  89. tommui August 5, 2012 11:01 am

#69 AL said: “time to put the mystery guy to bed.”

    Apparently he was a sleeper?

  90. SteveM August 5, 2012 11:02 am

Well, I hope JD’s not gone yet.

    Waiting on the investigation results.

While there were no locals with ropes, pitch forks and torches surrounding the SSC for the “Wonder Blunder”, Dole street is another matter for the shibai … 🙁

  91. tommui August 5, 2012 11:29 am

    #91 SteveM

Jim Donovan is one terrific guy and hope that the powers-that-be make a full, fair and complete investigation of the Wonder fiasco.

  92. John Fitzgerald Byers August 5, 2012 11:34 am

Goes to show that all the slow poking uh does is all due to laziness and a lack of effort. Things can happen in good time when they want to change or do something. Everything that falls by the waist side only shows where certain people have their priorities and the same goes for athletic administration when it comes to programs. Lots of inconsistent effort hiding behind consistent laziness and lack of initiative.

  93. John Fitzgerald Byers August 5, 2012 11:37 am

Its a wonder the UH teams and their coaches get anything done and all credit goes to them for working in such cumbersome conditions. They win in spite of all of administrations ineptitude. Imagine what the coaches and players in all teams could do with a competent and efficient administration?

  94. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2012 11:41 am

UH was contacted by a starting lineman from a BCS school. Chow and the HC of that team are friends. HC would release him only to UH. But Chow doesn’t want to poach from a friend. Player still is in limbo, last I heard.

  95. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 5, 2012 11:43 am

If Rockne doesn’t take the AD job past the interim, I think someone from the PAC 12 conference administration should be considered.

  96. manoa#1 August 5, 2012 11:44 am

#44 jordan monico is still on the team, he was told to report on the 1st day and was promise a starting job on speacial team if he was healed from his recent knee operation,i bet st never knew that and he said his operation is not healing right.and guess who operated on his knee…..some one st mentioned on the top of these blog…dat’s da inside scoop.

  97. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 5, 2012 11:46 am

Chow must be friends with so many BCS school coaches. A very good thing. I’ve heard him reference to Urban Meyer on a few occasions. I wonder if they are close.

  98. manoa#1 August 5, 2012 11:49 am

gout attacks all the joints on ur body most of my buddy’s have it and the bugga can put u outta commission for couple of days cause it is really painful.

  99. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2012 11:52 am

There was a RB or FB from Ohio State who contacted UH but nothing came of it.

  100. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2012 11:54 am

    Manoa1

    Thanks.

  101. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2012 11:56 am

I’m curious to see who ends up on special teams. They haven’t been able to go live. Word is they’ll go through fundamentals this week, then pick up the intensity on base.

  102. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2012 12:00 pm

Check that. There was a real bad FG attempt yesterday.

  103. WarriorNY August 5, 2012 12:01 pm

  113. kev-1 August 5, 2012 12:25 pm

I wouldn’t be so quick to rush Graves to another position. As excited as people are about having Coach Chow coaching these young QB’s, people need to remember that we are talking about QB’s that come to us from Duke and Utah St. Graves is likely struggling with the system switch more than the others, but we do know that the kid is a gamer. He may not end up being the starter, but as the rebuilding season plays out, there may be some packages for someone like Graves to see the field as a QB.

As for his future, if he ends up 3rd string, he should definitely go the Steel Jantz route after this year. He can be a starter somewhere.

  114. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 5, 2012 12:26 pm

Any update on the Penn State running back? Was it only just a dreeeaaam.

  115. Da Punchbowl Kid August 5, 2012 12:26 pm

Noticed a familiar surname on the Saint coaching roster in today’s SA article. That offense coordinator I believe. Care comment d1?

  116. gigi-hawaii August 5, 2012 12:32 pm

Well, wasn’t Moniz QB#6? After the other QBs sustained injuries, didn’t Moniz step up?

  119. d1shima August 5, 2012 12:35 pm

…or in the case of this year’s team, The Wright One’s…

  120. kev-1 August 5, 2012 12:35 pm

Been reading some of the other blogs and noticed that people say things like Schroeder reminds them of Steve Young. I think the excitement needs to be tempered a bit. Just because he’s left handed, we shouldn’t be throwing around those comparisons yet.

Let’s see the kid actually play a Div. 1 game first before we start calling him a pro-prospect or whatever.

With that said, I hope to be praising whoever our QB ends up being this year as being the next big thing.

  121. oldtimer808 August 5, 2012 12:37 pm

It is unfortunate for Graves but these things happen when there is a different offensive strategy. Coach Chow has to fit people within the system so how he is tunnel vision is beyond me. Change happens in life all the time so we have to adapt with the right attitude and move forward instead of lamenting when change happens. These are life lessons that the football student/athletes are experiencing. This is how we grow as an individual and adversity is not a bad thing if approached properly. I’m excited for the team, I’m excited for the coaches and the fans so hang in there and have patience. I hope the students support our UH teams and that movement should start with the students themselves and not the administration.

  122. WarriorNY August 5, 2012 12:38 pm

    Kev-1,

I just think Graves is a gifted athlete. I would just like to see him on the field in some capacity…

  123. kev-1 August 5, 2012 12:39 pm

    WarriorNY . . . that’s true. I guess I agree with you there.

  124. Pauoa Boy August 5, 2012 12:40 pm

Kev-1, reality says Graves sees no action at QB this year or next. The QB will be better protected in this offense and I don’t see Graves moving up the depth chart. Chow is an excellent QB Coach having been a part of some great QB’s in the past. If Higgins and Schroeder are emerging ahead of Graves then I don’t see how he will see the field behind center. Besides Graham is in the waiting for next year too which makes Graves the odd man out. Plus he is a junior so time is running out if he decides to transfer. I like Graves but I trust Coach Chow more in his decision making when it comes down to who will lead this team come Sept. 1st.

  125. Pauoa Boy August 5, 2012 12:44 pm

Moniz got lucky because our OLine at the time was horrible…just saying. This offense offers more protection and a more balanced approach with the running game to open up the play action passes.

  126. kev-1 August 5, 2012 12:56 pm

Let me clarify my point. I am not opposed to Graves transferring if he doesn’t see the field, especially since he will earn his degree this year and can play elsewhere next year without sitting out. I am just not sold on Schroeder or Higgins yet. I trust Chow too, so I back whoever he names the starter and will get behing him 100%.

  127. gmahoney August 5, 2012 12:56 pm

d1 #118, why not just say “Let’s go Crusaders”? Yikes, what did I just say? Ptooey!

  128. AIEA August 5, 2012 1:01 pm

Puu Robinson should be granted. Isnt his situation similar to Phil Sims who is allowed to play for UVA this year?

  129. RedZone August 5, 2012 1:04 pm

Chow said the real evaluation is when they review the tapes after the practice session. So I am assuming that it is what they are doing?

  130. d1shima August 5, 2012 1:08 pm

    gmahoney,

    Gotcha!

    heheheh

  131. kapakahi August 5, 2012 1:09 pm

A nutritionist would definitely help players to retain and/or gain weight AND others to lose weight…..the right way……while gaining strength & stamina…..instead of through their own means…..as ST alluded to with current OL (Muir, Clarke, Lefotu, Loeffler, etc.) in this morning’s article.

  132. d1shima August 5, 2012 1:10 pm

It looks like The Former Coach is not the only one who thinks TOP is “the most overrated stat”

The Ducks last season ranked fifth in the Pac-12 in total defense at 390.1 yards per game. That might not seem all that impressive until considering that Oregon faced a conference-high 1,077 plays thanks mostly to its fast-paced offense that ranked last in time of possession (24 minutes, 59 seconds per game).

  133. gmahoney August 5, 2012 1:12 pm

    d1, yes, you did.

On the other hand, Let’s Go WARRIORS!

  134. d1shima August 5, 2012 1:13 pm

    How do YOU define “reload”

One of the top 5 questions facing UofO as they open camp

    2. Will aNo. 3 running back emerge?

Last year, freshman De’Anthony Thomas quickly established himself as the No. 3 back behind LaMichael James and Barner. Barner is now the lead back with Thomas at No. 2. Freshman four-star recruit Byron Marshall is the only other scholarship running back on the roster. Walk-ons Ayele Forde and Kenny Bassett have shown promise. “We have to see who we will develop as a third and fourth, because you’re going to need depth in this league,” coach Chip Kelly said.

  135. kev-1 August 5, 2012 1:13 pm

speaking of the Crusaders and Oregon, I wonder how the former Crusader QB is doing in the QB competition with the Ducks.

  136. Bigislandkurt August 5, 2012 1:21 pm

I feel bad for Graves, but that is the name of the game. Unless some other great offer comes calling, I trust he will remain as a QB candidate at UH. He does have some moxy, but just did not perform under this new system. Not yet, at least. I still think that he has what it takes. But will he roll the dice and hope for a “mo-like” assention to the top? Kind of a hard place to be I’m sure.

ON the lighter side of things, it is almost certain that UH will have a lefty for a QB this year. Me likey plenty.

    saweeeeeet!

  140. kapakahi August 5, 2012 1:39 pm

    #126,

That’s what happened last season when there were injuries to the OL (Laurel, Lefiti, Leonard, Shigematsu, Winchester-Makainai)….unlike the previous 2010 season when OL was virtually intact the whole regular season (LT Hansen, LG Ginlack, C Tiwanak, RG Thomas, RT Letuli / LaCount).

JMHO that this year’s OL has very high potential…..BUT still with very limited live game experience thus far. Kinda reminds me of the 2003 OL when 4 then redshirt frosh OL (Tala Esera, Jeremy Infererra, Samson Satele, Dane Uperesa) started and/or saw significant PT.

With Mike Milovale’s status still uncertain, this year’s OL is barely 2-deep so avoiding injuries will still be the key this season.

With true frosh OT Leo Koloamatangi currently lining up at 2nd team LT behind Blake Muir (himself a redshirt frosh), all the LT candidates haven’t yet even taken a live FBS game snap…..unless Kapua Sai sees action at LT this season.

Redshirt frosh Kody Afusia has seen limited game action, the other 2 C candidates (Ben Clarke & Kiha Sai) are both true frosh……unless Kapua Sai sees action at C this season.

  141. Shoko August 5, 2012 1:40 pm

However, I heard the same thing about Bennett. Did I temper your excitement…lol?

  142. kapakahi August 5, 2012 1:41 pm

While he’s listed on the Fall Camp roster, he was MIA at yesterday’s practice.

  143. Pauoa Boy August 5, 2012 1:44 pm

Kev-1, I got you as I myself am not sold on any of our current QBs. I like Graves and thought he would have the upper hand which he did but obviously he hasn’t adjusted well enough.

  144. Pauoa Boy August 5, 2012 1:48 pm

I’m just saying Coach Chow isn’t Mac and the former merry go round QB system we had prior isn’t happening again with Coach Chow Garranz on that! So with Graves not considered in the top two to me seems like his chances are slim in being a starter this year or next, just saying… I hope as we’ve had in the past a QB steps up and takes control.

  145. BigHiloFan2 August 5, 2012 1:49 pm

    Yep, pretty quick kid.

  153. al August 5, 2012 3:17 pm

as noted the other day by another tsaiko. having two frosh at lt is not of great concern this year.

for one, blake muir had nearly a year and half to develop the american football skills and physically no one worked harder than he. he is ready and has the mental aptitude and toughness to do so. leo the lion is young and will develop. when he adds 25lbs he will be a force. i think kapua or kiha may slide over if they needed another body there.

two, with the two qb candidates throwing from the south, it is the right tackle who will now hold the blindside responsibility. shigematsu has just been waiting to get back out there.

three, while depth is a concern it is not a problem.

  154. Pauoa Boy August 5, 2012 3:18 pm

Mariota is going to be a beast for the Ducks…

i believe after studying a lot of tape today chow and company will come up with 75% depth chart. meaning, at least 3/4 ths of the spots will be penciled in, thus making monday or tuesday very important practices.

no later than wednesday is when the holy grail candidate is named.

    Kapakahi,

After watching practice for two days it is obvious that they have put the Golden Boy status on Blake, like you said he have not played a down of american football, And to make sure he wrap up that position, they moved Loyd to right guard a player who would and can give Blake a run. currently playing a true freshman as a back up. I think a little hanky panky going on No sour grape just saying. But I am very happy with our o-line this year and for the next three years

  164. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2012 4:48 pm

Doe has some sort of injury.

He was working with Heffernan yesterday.

  165. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2012 4:48 pm

    Doe is falling behind.

    And Alo is catching up.

  166. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2012 4:49 pm

The biggest challenge to Muir is going to be Milovale, who should be cleared to play before Wednesday.

I think Loeffler has had a pretty good camp, too.

And, of course, Kapua Sai is doing a nice job.

  167. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2012 4:51 pm

Kev-1 is correct that Graves is a gamer.

Unfortunately for Graves, he has the most experience in a system that no longer exists at UH.

  168. Pauoa Boy August 5, 2012 4:52 pm

Ainokea who the QB starter going be… I’m more interested in our running game this year as I feel both Will Gregory will breakout and Joey Iosefa is going to get nasty. Plus I want to see our defense in action. Especially our improved secondary with my man Tony Grimes and JHT, plus Edwards, Sellers, N’Quan and hopefully JT and Fields.

  169. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2012 4:53 pm

Word on the boulevard is the Warriors will add some practice players after training camp ends. Not many. Maybe five?

Word is the next player to be added would be Jack Damuni.

  170. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2012 4:53 pm

    PB:

One of the most impressive has been Bubba Poueu-Luna.

  171. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2012 4:56 pm

Former USC offensive lineman Fred Matua died.

He was one of Chow’s favorites.

When Chow was at Tennessee, he brought in Matua, who spent almost a year on the practice squad.

  175. kapakahi August 5, 2012 5:27 pm

    #167,

JMHO that Blake Muir looked solid yesterday….as did Leo Koloamatangi. To clarify, none of the LT candidates (Muir, Milovale, Koloamatangi) have yet played a live down of FBS game action.

Koloamatangi is long and rangy so definitely better suited to play OT. Peformed well in one-on-one drills. Definitely got the frame to add the necessary bulk…..to contribute down the line. Definitely nice to see some long & tall OTs (Muir, Shigematsu, Loeffler, Koloamatangi).

While he played tentatively in spot duty last year, JMHO that Frank Loyd Jr. definitely looks like an improved version…..in better condition. Loyd Jr. currently lining up with 2nd team at LG ahead of redshirt frosh Ben Dew. Chauncy Winchester-Makainai running with 2nd team OL behind David Lefotu at RG. Kody Afusia running with 2nd team OL at C (behind Clarke but ahead of true frosh Kiha Sai) with Jordan Loeffler at RT.

Hopefully he’ll be cleared by Wednesday, so that can see Milovale compete in pads by next Saturday.

  176. kapakahi August 5, 2012 5:34 pm

    Aloha Fred Matua!

Will always be a Banning HS Pilot!

  177. kapakahi August 5, 2012 5:44 pm

Can’t help but notice that quite a few safeties….and a couple of cornerbacks…..that were left off of the Fall Camp roster (from Spring Ball).

Resolution of the eligibility issues with Fields and Turner will ultimately influence who (from the “bull pen”) will be invited back to re-join the team.

BUT then again…..there’s always the possibility that Graves could also switch to safety too. Hmmmm……

chow will never employ a two-qb system.

he has hinted at a wildcat formation. they hybrid could be joey iosefa or david graves.

i picture graves also as a slot receiver candidate or in the backfield next to the fullback in a pseudo-runnng back position. he could be a threat; is he going run with the ball, run a bubble screen, or fake a sweep and toss it deep. ah, the possibilities are endless.

after all chow likes to put his players in a position where they can exploit their talents.

    Hey, got chance for 200!

  199. wafan August 5, 2012 8:32 pm

    200!

  200. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2012 8:32 pm

OK, who’s visiting naughty sites and leaving the spam door open?

  201. wafan August 5, 2012 8:39 pm

Coaches will make the decisions that is why they make the big bucks. The rest of us are just spectators.

Oops, now the comments are closed . . . darn spam . . . now it is open.

    Go Warriors!

  202. wafan August 5, 2012 8:40 pm

    Nytal!

  203. wafan August 5, 2012 8:40 pm

Anyone watch the Mars landing on line?

  204. kev-1 August 5, 2012 8:44 pm

why am I craving a musubi right now?

  205. kev-1 August 5, 2012 8:45 pm

Mark my words . . . David Graves will throw a touchdown pass and run for at least one more for the University of Hawaii Warriors THIS season.

  206. kev-1 August 5, 2012 8:46 pm

Best man for this offense? Nope. Great for lining up on the outside, running a reverse in the backfield, catching the pitch and throwing one deep for the score.

  207. kev-1 August 5, 2012 8:47 pm

ooh! just got caught in a spam sandwich

  208. kev-1 August 5, 2012 8:50 pm

Anyone watch the room full of nerds cheering after the Mars landing?

Okay, I’ll go to the time out corner for that one.

  209. Bugaz August 5, 2012 8:54 pm

    Too much spam…gives me gout

  210. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2012 8:58 pm

Somebody named ALLAN was found to have a spam attachment. I have no idea what that means. But that’s what i was told. So, please, clean your caches after visiting naughty sites.

  211. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2012 9:01 pm

Looks like NBC is adding the commentary after events. That’s why the announcer said, “look at the height she’s getting,” before the gymnast jumps.

  212. Bugaz August 5, 2012 9:03 pm

So how do you clean caches? 🙂

  213. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2012 9:06 pm

If you’re using Safari, go to Safari, and there’s a place that says, clean cache.

  214. al August 5, 2012 9:26 pm

  228. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 5, 2012 11:42 pm

I remember Coach Chow saying he would be the recruiting coordinator. Is Demarest the 2nd in command? His name pops up quite a bit when it comes to recruiting on the mainland. Wouldn’t be surprised if he was brought on board for that reason.

  229. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2012 11:44 pm

    JT update in eight minutes.

  230. Stephen Tsai August 5, 2012 11:44 pm
