Class act

In 2012, the Warriors will subsidize the costs of charter flights for visiting Mountain West football opponents.

The bill will be in the six figures. Per trip.

That’s the cost of doing business in a new league.

This year, as part of  higher-level instructions to act like a business, the Warriors will stay on the Mainland between the Washington and UNLV games. The savings of not coming back to Hawaii are said to be about $95,000. Not sure how that was calculated since, no matter what, the Warriors would have had to return to Hawaii at some point. Does that mean that the extra roundtrip — between Hawaii and Las Vegas —  would have cost  $95,000 plus the expenses of an additional four-day stay in Vegas? I guess Cheap Tickets’ tours were booked.

But I digress.

The thing is, the Warriors will miss an extra three days of school by remaining on the Mainland. This from a team that was on the road 26 days last year, missing 20 days of classes. The Warriors probably will miss the same amount of class time this year.

At some point, the missed class time will have to be made up. Last year, the Warriors, who already play the longest regular season, needed to take off a week after the regular-season finale to make up school work. Then, they canceled two scheduled Hawaii Bowl practices because of final exams. Several players, including star slotback Greg Salas, missed three other practices to complete work necessary to earn a bachelor’s degree.

Yes, in these tough financial times, the athletic department needs to act like a business. But for a school that established a bridge session during the summer, and an athletic department that has raised money for summer school and maintaining an outstanding Nagatani academic center, maybe $95,000 should be viewed as an investment in 64 players’ education rather than a liability.

But I digress.

Nineteen Warriros participated in pro-football evaluations yesterday afternoon. Two NFL scouts conducted the testing, with the results to be forwarded to 26 of 32 NFL teams. Aaron Brown, Brett Leonard and Matagisila Lefiti had class obligations, and met with the scouts earlier in the day.

hmmm. It’s true that the Athletic Dept should be run as a business. However, doesn’t the word “student” come before the word “athlete”?

To me, education is more important than $95K.

In the age of the Internet and web-based learning there is no reason a class HAS to be

made-up by sitting in a seat listening to a lecture. Mentoring and guidance can be done online.

  13. Okole Maluna May 6, 2011 8:40 am

Now that most of ‘Original WAC” teams are gone.

They should think about changing the name to Athletic Western Conference so that they will be 2nd on the list of Conferences after ACC and not Last alphabetically. It would also Shred the “WAC – Wacky” Conference Stigma.

Amazingly there is no one listed after Sun Belt Conference.

  14. homey ℞ May 6, 2011 8:40 am

Give me $95k and I’ll make education a low priority in my life.

  15. Derek May 6, 2011 8:42 am

There are always concerns when athletes are on the road and miss a lot of class time. However, in today’s age with the internet and laptop computers, every football player has the means to study everyday on the road and can do their assignments. And at the same time the teachers and professors should be able to make their assignments available for the players through the internet. It is called “reasonable accomodations” like they say in the Disability Law. Technology makes a lot of things possible. Of course, if the athlete doesn’t study anyway, well, that’s their problem. That’s way there are supposed to have some tutors to help them. Another “reasonable accomodation”.

  16. LizKauai May 6, 2011 8:49 am

Yes indeed. MAKE IT HAPPEN for our STUDENT ATHLETES!

    Talking about rising air fare:

Clapp said the football team expects to spend $502,010 in airfare for its 2011 flights, about $23,000 more than it spent to go to identical destinations (Seattle; Las Vegas; Ruston, La.; San Jose, Calif.; Moscow, Idaho; and Reno, Nev.) in 2009.

Too bad Hawaiian don’t have a early morning flight to LV, checking the booking I see that if you fly on September 17 and return Wednesday, September 21st round trip will cost $330.

Can the game be moved to Monday night Football will be nice. Book’um Dano’

    Hola Senor Homey –

Followed your recommendation and watched the new series on HBO, Game of Thrones.

Alls I gots to say is hot dayum!

I was concerned about some of the more “adult content” at first, but after watching a couple of episodes, I can see those scenes aren’t gratuitous and serve the theme of the series well. The writing and most of the acting is incredible, better than most movies and and television series.

Who’s your favorite character so far? I have one. See if you can guess who it is… Hint: he reminds of a certain blogger here. 😉

  20. gigi-hawaii May 6, 2011 8:56 am

Some classes like chemistry require labs. How can lab work be made up on the Internet?

My daughter told me her labs were graded separately from her lecture classes.

  21. Garret May 6, 2011 8:57 am

It looks like NMSU has found a loophole in the NCAA’s recruiting rules to create a “blueshirt” category for recruits. NMSU even openly categorizes certain recruits as blueshirts on NLI day.

A blueshirt is someone who is technically a walk-on on NLI day but has already been promised a scholarship when they enroll in school in the Fall. The player gets his scholarship when he enrolls in school and can play that season just like a regular recruit…but his scholarship counts towards the *next* recruiting class even though he’s already playing for his school!

The NCAA rules prevent scholarship offers to walk-ons to be made *in writing*. There is no rule against promising a “walk-on” recruit a scholarship verbally.

UH grayshirts a number of recruits already. What a blueshirt does is let UH delay when the scholarship counts until the next year but allow the recruit to play right away instead of waiting a semester to enroll.

Above all else, the process of assigning a blueshirt pushes a recruit’s scholarship number to the ensuing class, regardless of when he joined the program. Look at it like this: it’s like a greyshirt, but one where the recruit can actually play during his initial semester. A player is part of the 2010 recruiting cycle, for example, plays during the 2010 season yet counts towards the 2011 recruiting class.

That was me at one of UH class for Japanese II when I went to class first time the instuctor says “do you know today is test day?” and I told her that’s why I came.

Few weeks later she sent me to Japanese III but I still attended only on Friday – Test day.

  25. Okole Maluna May 6, 2011 9:03 am

Lab class work – you only need to listen last 10 minutes when you have to answer that week’s quiz

  26. Garret May 6, 2011 9:05 am

It is very, very sad that UH wasn’t able to let the players come home to take classes like they said they were going to try to do. This is an example of how money affects the quality of education that UH athletes can have.

I have no doubt for a second that this type of class time loss due to money will be used against UH in recruiting. Parents that care about their son’s education will look at 20 days of missed classes (a semester only has so many days, that is a HUGE percentage of the total class time) and worry about that.

It is nice for the MWC and Big West that UH will pay for their entire cost of a charter flight so that their athletes can miss the minimum amount of time. It is really sad that UH cannot do the same for its own athletes.

  27. gigi-hawaii May 6, 2011 9:09 am

    Garret,

I read somewhere that many student athletes take only 12 credits during the fall semester because of their football schedule.

They take 15 or more credits during the spring semester when they have more time.

  28. Stephen Tsai May 6, 2011 9:15 am

I think accommodations can be made.

But, come on, it’s still tough to miss 20 days in a four-month semester.

  29. Okole Maluna May 6, 2011 9:15 am

Is it against the NCAA rules to let a student atheltes take with them on long trips professors notes and audio tape for the coming week lessons and take a quiz or test after listening to that week? That will make up for missed time in class or lab works.

  30. Da Punchbowl Kid May 6, 2011 9:17 am

My thoughts exactly, Homey. Diggin’ the imp big time! 😆 Momoa ‘s gonna be a super star.

Doesn’t Ned Stark loook like the late Captain Phil Harris from “Deadliest Catch”?

  31. Da Punchbowl Kid May 6, 2011 9:18 am

    #28 – Gotta agree, sir.

  32. Stephen Tsai May 6, 2011 9:19 am

That blueshirt idea is very innovative. Of course, blueshirts and grayshirts, they’re all like credit-card bills. At the end, they have to be paid. Just have to make sure you’re not borrowing too much from the future.

  33. Okole Maluna May 6, 2011 9:19 am

I think the rest of the conference should pay for UH charter flight so that their athletes can miss the minimum amount of time. UH student athletes must take 4 times to conference games when others need only take one trip to Hawaii. Where is the fairness.

  34. homey ℞ May 6, 2011 9:23 am

Didn’t watch that show much, but yeah there is a resemblance.

  35. Garret May 6, 2011 9:24 am

    Okole Maluna,

The option that UH had was to pay the travel subsidies or stay in the WAC. In other words, UH had no leverage.

  36. Okole Maluna May 6, 2011 9:26 am

On top of that other Conference team coaches complain about how Tough it is to prepare for next game after a flight to Hawaii?

Warriors does it more than their share of crossing the Pacific return home and suck it up for next game.

I’ve never heard our Warriors complain about that.

  37. Kazz May 6, 2011 9:27 am

Anyone ever tried to take a final exam on a road trip?

  38. Stephen Tsai May 6, 2011 9:27 am

I have no doubt in this technological age, you can get assignments through e-mail.

And you can make up the missed class time.

But UH looks bad in saying the decision was money-based. It’s the truth, and the mandate from the Board of Regents has been to treat this like a business. The AD should be commended for being honest and transparent. But still …

  39. Stephen Tsai May 6, 2011 9:29 am

I think the answer is the Boyd Group should pay for a charter flight.

  40. Okole Maluna May 6, 2011 9:29 am

Well then UH should start ‘Deducting’ each time gas and oil fees goes up as cost of business or UH will file for bankruptcies

  41. Kazz May 6, 2011 9:29 am

    Gigi,

Some other student athletes take MORE than 12 credits and they travel as well and their season is comprised of more games than football.

  42. gigi-hawaii May 6, 2011 9:29 am

meanwhile, it is raining hard over Aloha Stadium.

    is it raining in Manoa?

  43. Garret May 6, 2011 9:30 am

I just counted the number of classroom instruction days that UH has this Fall:

    16 weeks x 5 = 80 – 5 days where there are no classes (holidays, etc.)

So, there are 75 days with classes this Fall at UH. The Warriors are expected to miss 20 of those days. That is 27% of the classes, more than 1 out of every 4 days!

The Warriors who are able to get high GPAs while missing so many lectures and labs are amazing. Just being able to pass their courses while spending all of those hours in practices and meetings and missing so many classes is an accomplishment.

  44. SteveM May 6, 2011 9:31 am

As an Ed. Tech, I agree that technology can compensate considerably for butt-in-the-seat time. Look at all the online college credit courses today. But there is a balance there–just not sure where it is today from the professor’s point of view. Of course, I used to wake up late and miss morning classes, go the school and eat lunch at Grace’s lunch wagon, then cut afternoon classes…all without a computer or iPod, or i-something. 😐

As a UH football fan, I would be more concerned about UH losing the back end game (since 2007) whenever they stayed a week on the mainland? Not blaming Vegas distractions…probably the opposite…they over-practice maybe?

  45. Okole Maluna May 6, 2011 9:31 am

  46. gigi-hawaii May 6, 2011 9:33 am

I really want to know how Pilares managed. He was a kinesiology major like my daughter.

How did he make up time for his science labs? These are hands-on type labs that can’t be made up on the internet.

Yet, the guy excelled academically! sheesh!

  47. Garret May 6, 2011 9:34 am

On top of that other Conference team coaches complain about how Tough it is to prepare for next game after a flight to Hawaii?

Warriors does it more than their share of crossing the Pacific return home and suck it up for next game.

No conference has to take UH in, so UH has to provide value to the conference to make it worthwhile. Coaches are CORRECT to express concern about the class time that their athletes will miss…they should be concerned about the student part of student-athlete. They do not have to worry about UH’s student-athletes, their job is to worry about their athletes.

It used to be that the Hawaii Exception made it worthwhile for conferences to take UH and UH didn’t even pay travel subsidies in the WAC for years. But I’ve been pointing out for years now that the Hawaii Exception is nearly worthless now since the NCAA added more regular season games without increasing the length of the season.

  48. Okole Maluna May 6, 2011 9:36 am

#39 ST don’t think that a good idea I can see Vacation Hawaii Fares going up fast.

  49. Garret May 6, 2011 9:36 am

Texas had a starting basketball player that had to take a year off from the basketball team (he had already redshirted, so he burned a year of eligibility) because of all the lab classes he had to take. He was a Chemical Engineering major…you cannot make up those labs and have no access to the million-dollar lab equipment on a road trip.

  50. Okole Maluna May 6, 2011 9:37 am

But the Boyd Group should pay for a charter flight every time UH goes to Las Vegas!

  51. Okole Maluna May 6, 2011 9:39 am

But the Boyd Group should pay for a charter flight every time Warrior goes to Las Vegas.

And that only every other year now.

  52. Okole Maluna May 6, 2011 9:45 am

Another question on UH raising $$ Money.

Can Hawaii or will UH be able to make money by holding games at Aloha Stadium when the Warriors are away and let other conferences or “ESPN sponsored Big games” to play in a neutral site like the Cowboys Stadium does?

  53. Okole Maluna May 6, 2011 9:52 am

So if that’s the case: “It used to be that the Hawaii Exception made it worthwhile for conferences to take UH and UH didn’t even pay travel subsidies in the WAC for years. But I’ve been pointing out for years now that the Hawaii Exception is nearly worthless now since the NCAA added more regular season games without increasing the length of the season.”

Bill NCAA for the cost to make it fair. As a Cost of fair play for each and every member of NCAA teams. They make enough money from us mid level teams. It’s because of teams like us Mid level teams that they can have Big BCS game too. Let them pay to be fair.

    Speaking of academics…

    http://www.hawaiiathletics.com/news/2011/5/6/SB_0506114007.aspx

HONOLULU—University of Hawai’i centerfielder Kelly Majam has been voted to the Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 first team on Friday. She is just the ninth player in UH history to earn the prestigious honor.

Only eight other Rainbow Wahine have ever earned the honor: Tracy Loo (1992), Joyce Lum (1998), Stacie Hirano (2002), Kate Judd (2002), Tracie Uchima (2004), Brandi Peiler (2008), Julie Franklin (2008, ’09), and Clare Warwick, who is the only Rainbow Wahine to earn the honor three years (2007, ’08, ’09).

In order to be nominated for Academic All-District and All-America honors, a player must have completed at least one academic year at UH; must be a starter or significant reserve; must have a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average; and must have completed at least one full academic year at her institution. Voting is done by member of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America).

Welcome to Hawaii Shaquille Stokes, I hope your visit to the island will be everything you’ve been looking for. I hope you choose to become a Warrior and play for our basketball team. You could definitely make a huge impact and become a 4yr. starter for sure. If you choose to become a Warrior just think of the solid core of ballerz you’ll have around you the next 4 years in Gerry Blakes, Dillon Biggs, and Ronnie Stevens… it could be the beginning of something special. You could be the leader of this Fab 4 crew of 2011 recruits for Hawaii by being the point guard we could show aloha and support to for the next 4 years. I think if you choose to become a Warrior I could definitely see you as one of the first guys to have your name on Coach Gib’s Wall of Fame with a framed jersey and the name Stokes on the back. Think of how sweet that would be if you could also be the guy to help your teammates reach that level of greatness by being the leader and point guard for the next 4 years. Blakes, Biggs, and Stevens all have the potential but with a true point guard like yourself leading the way, the 4 of you could become something special. Good luck in your decision but I hope you choose to become a Warrior!

  66. Pauoa Boy May 6, 2011 11:12 am

Another reason why Kelly Majam gets more cool points and her hotness meter goes up. Nothing like an athletic, cute, attractive girl with brains and a good head on her shoulders…

Good Luck to Coach Gib in being able to put on the full court press and persuade Stokes to choose to play for Hawaii!!! Talk about icing on the cake and a cream of the crop group of solid recruits for 2011 if he were to sign with us…

If you are an athlete in intercollegiate sports, they have chosen this path. And they have to do what they have to do to get their academics done. Otherwise, they are done. Period.

Compared to the past, there are enough resources available to make school a lot more easier than when I went to school where there were not computers, no printers, etc. Nobody has had that it’s easier to be a student-athlete. It is hard work. But, all athletes have goalsand are very determined and driven and most of them find a way to get their academic goals done. It reminds me of the story of Blaze Soares. He thought he might not get a degree. He was determined to do so. And, he did and he said it was the most greatest thing that he has done in his life. As a student athlete it takes in most cases at least 5 years to graduate, includiing having to take a lot of summer school classes. Exceptions, like Andrew Luck can finish their degrees in 3 to 4 years. But, he’s a really smart guy too. In any event, I give these student-athletes a lot of credit. Just going to school to study only, as I did, was tough enough.

  72. d1shima May 6, 2011 12:39 pm

Every team in a conference needs to provide value to a conference. If the MWC want to discuss value then let’s bring Wyoming and UNLV into the discussion.

    Old Diver,

Interesting that you singled out those two schools.

UNLV brought more money to the MWC than UH did in its Sugar Bowl season by getting to the NCAA tournament and winning games in the past. If we compare that basketball performance of UNLV and UH, UNLV is far superior…and they are a case where their basketball performance actually brings more to their conference than many schools do with football success.

UNLV’s location also is valuable to the conference–Vegas Bowl is a lot more profitable than the Hawaii Bowl (higher payout and lower travel cost), easy travel for all schools, lots of conference activities held in their city, etc. It the plans go through for their new football stadium that will be walking distance from campus, their Athletic Department will be able to upgrade everything with the new revenue.

Wyoming won a bowl game more recently (by 3 years) than UH–I looked that up and was surprised. They won the MWC basketball title twice (they also won 5 WAC basketball titles, so this is not new success). They won an NCAA basketball tournament game as recently as 2002 and they made the Sweet 16 in 1987. Their basketball success is far superior to UH’s in the NCAA tournament and the NCAA tournament provides a significant revenue stream for conferences.

Wyoming’s Athletics seems to be supported well–they just got luxury boxes before the 2010 football season, which will bring in additional revenue every year that they can use to upgrade their program. Believe me, I know the importance of luxury boxes and I have been through the numbers…and I beat my head against the wall for months on behalf of UH for that.

Most importantly for Wyoming and UNLV, they are needed for the MWC to satisfy continuity requirements since they lost BYU/Utah/TCU. The MWC’s NCAA basketball credits are worth about $30 mil, so there is no scenario where Wyoming and UNLV would be kicked out and that $30 mil be thrown away.

  75. Garret May 6, 2011 12:47 pm

Can Hawaii or will UH be able to make money by holding games at Aloha Stadium when the Warriors are away and let other conferences or “ESPN sponsored Big games” to play in a neutral site like the Cowboys Stadium does?

Holding extra sporting events at Aloha Stadium is something that has been discussed for years and I know for a fact that it was being studied in some detail last year. Unfortunately for UH, the Aloha Stadium Authority runs the stadium and $0 of that extra revenue will go to UH if/when it occurred.

By the way, Hawaii is a bad location for neutral site games due to high travel costs and time and because there are no luxury boxes. Ticket sales would be poor for neutral site games due to the expense for mainland fans of both schools to get to the game (look at how many tickets the visiting team buys for the Hawaii bowl). It is no coincidence that NFL stadiums are being used for neutral site games…the extra seats and especially the luxury boxes make those games big financial winners.

Most airlines charges $50 per additional baggage up to 50 lbs. With all the equipment needed for just one player, not to mention all other equipment needed to run practices, I can see how it can be pricey to add an additional round trip.

Plus Tue extra flying would be more taxing on the player’s bodies.

As far as the Blue Shirt goes, ST is on point to say if not managed right, it could get out of hand. Especially if a new Head coach is brought in later on. Either a coach or player would be screwed. BTW Colt and the IceMan were thus BlueShirts 🙂

  78. Garret May 6, 2011 12:53 pm

I love watching Kaniela Tuipulotu and Vaughn Meatoga play. Their measurables above should satisfy NFL scouts enough that both should have a good shot to be drafted.

Corey Paredes is amazingly productive, but the NFL drafts on measurables…their myopia makes them overlook excellent players like him due to height.

Bryant Moniz was measured under 6 feet and the NFL seems to look for excuses to downgrade QBs from UH and similar places like Texas Tech.

I agree with ST’s assessment that Tuipulotu is the player that NFL scouts will follow the closest this season. But Meatoga and some others may also get some notice. If the NFL cared more about production and less about height, UH would get more players drafted every year…

  79. Garret May 6, 2011 12:56 pm

    BigWave96744,

Blueshirts get a scholarship before the football season starts in the first year they are with a program…so, UH hasn’t had a blueshirt yet.

I agree that the problem could get out of control…but UH grayshirts a bunch of players already and blueshirting would give UH an option to have one of them play right away instead of being only part-time in the Fall and getting a scholarship in the Spring.

Colt was a standard walk-on who had to wait a year for a scholarship. UH could have used the blueshirt to put him on scholarship in 2005 instead of having him wait until 2006.

  80. Garret May 6, 2011 1:03 pm

Interesting to see that the WAC might expand by this number of schools…

According to Karl Benson, the WAC might be expanding by 4 schools on June 14th.

An early target, Montana, passed on the WAC already. Other schools expressing interest in FBS football are Jacksonville St. and Appalachian St. But neither school has even finalized plans to upgrade.

Western located FCS football schools such as Sacramento St., Cal Poly, UC Davis and Portland St. have also opted to remain in FCS at this time.

So unless something drastic has changed with those FCS schools, Lamar remains the only real option as a potential football member.

If four schools are indeed invited, all signs point to the possibility of them being:

    1) Lamar: will add an 8th football school and 9th all-sports member

    2) Seattle: would be the 10th member but without football; Would provide some access to the Seattle market; close to WAC member Idaho

    3) Utah Valley: would be the 12th member, without football. A travel partner for Utah St.

    4) CSU Bakersfield: would be the 11th member, without football; Located close enough to SJSU

    HI DPK:

Had a medical appointment this AM so I could not beat you to the pole position!

I had a history prof at UH – one of those that wrote books etc. I missed most of his lectures but pulled A’s on the three exams – UH used to have (and might still have) three exams per semester, the last exam being the final.

He was going to give me a D as he explained it because “I missed most of his lectures”. My reasoning was that I should get an A+ for the course as I got excellent results in the exams – after all, if I attended all of his lectures and got Fs on the exams, my grade for the course would be an F!

He ended up giving me a C!

Moral: make sure your professor is not vain enough to insist you attend his lectures.

  92. Kazz May 6, 2011 1:17 pm

  95. Not an Expert May 6, 2011 1:24 pm

    Garret:

The neutral site game can be done with Army, Navy or Air Force. With the military presence and the draw of such a game, the military population can practically fill the stadium. Plus the national interest would have many positives and help tourism in Hawii too. It will also bring great interest from all the bases around the PAC-RIM area. Help recruiting for the military schools as well as for the different military service. The military can house the teams to minimize cost. Plus they can still have their annual game at their respective home sight.

Following week one of the schools stays back and play Hawaii. Keeps cost down for UH too. A mini vacation for a service academy team.

  96. al May 6, 2011 1:24 pm

    hopefully he picks hawaii.

    what would we call him?

    sugar shaq

    small shaq

    baby shaq

    shaq attack

or something more local, little grass shaq?

  97. al May 6, 2011 1:25 pm

  98. Kazz May 6, 2011 1:26 pm

Here we go again. It’s been two outs for the last 15 minutes.

The Wahine may be back at the hotel already.

  99. Stephen Tsai May 6, 2011 1:27 pm

I’m pretty sure the high cost is because UH wanted to travel by charter back to Honolulu after the Washington game. If the team flew commercial, it would save a lot more money.

  100. al May 6, 2011 1:32 pm

regarding football travel costs…so we are willing to cough up nearly 500k for travel subsidy just so that we can play in the mwc instead of the soon to tumble wac.

i can understand that and fully appreciate that we are in the mwc next year. it is the cost of doing business.

we are told to run the program like a business. the product, which is the football team needs to be productive and illegible in the classroom to even get on the field. like any business to be successful you have to separate yourselves from the competition just to genererate income.

therefore, if we are not willing to spend 95k more to help out our product, the student/athlete, suceed in the classroom, then, we are failing in our mission both morally and in an economic sense since we are not doing our best to make sure our product, the student/athletes, are performing at an optimum level both in and out of the classroom.

    …nuff said.

In 2009, I decided to impose a 48-hour waiting period before gambling.

But the check-in line was so long I rolled my luggage to the craps table and started playing. Didn’t even wait 4 minutes.

  106. al May 6, 2011 1:53 pm

well, curt, at the same time tcu and weathervane kentucy both signed pg’s recently.

    and we really need one.

gerry blakes is going to be a great player for the university of hawaii. he will eventually be the two guard, this is where his talents are. he could be the pg by default since he is considered a great combo guard.

landing a pg of sugar shaq’s ability will enhance the team’s goal to play a slashing, driving type of game. couple small shaq with gerry and we would drive defenses nuts since both can slash abd drive. both can shoot the three, both, especially baby shaq can handle the rock. and both can shoot from the stripe.

too bad the little grass shaq couldn’t be here when biggs and blakes was here last week. perhaps some magic could have stirred.

Following week one of the schools stays back and play Hawaii. Keeps cost down for UH too. A mini vacation for a service academy team.

    Not an Expert,

The military academy team then would miss an *entire week* of school to stay in Hawaii. That would be contrary to the whole mission of the academies.

The main reason why the suggestion was for neutral site games in Hawaii is that UH could get money…but academies playing at Aloha Stadium wouldn’t bring a penny to UH since the Stadium Authority would pocket the money.

The military academies make a LOT of money for each home game, and home games against other academies are sell-outs with intense interest for the people at the academies. They would *lose* money by playing a neutral site game in Hawaii…and that money they lose in the end is our tax dollars. They would deprive the members of the academy, the instructors, and everyone around their program from seeing one of the highlight games of the season.

Bottom line, the loss of money, the extra travel time, the week-and-a-half of classes lost (for the team that stays in Hawaii to play UH the following week), and a variety of other reasons would prevent neutral site games in Hawaii from happening.

NFL stadiums with luxury boxes generate MILLIONS more per game than Aloha Stadium. Easier travel for fans and easier and cheaper travel for for the teams means that there are no scenarios where I can see neutral site games making sense for Aloha Stadium.

Look at it this way: The academies could play a neutral site game in New York, California, or Texas and make 5x more money than they could at Aloha Stadium. They also would save on travel time and expenses. They would play in a market that has a *lot* more potential recruits and active military than Hawaii has. Why would they play the game in Hawaii instead?

    iwonderwhytheyhateme,

According to UH, these are the heights of UH QBs. Beware, there normally is anywhere from 0.5″ to 2″ of padding in the numbers that UH lists:

    Cayman Shutter 6’1″

    Corey Nielsen 5’11”

    David Graves 6’0″

    Shane Austin 6’0″

    Kevin Spain 6’1″

    Bryant Moniz 6’0″

    Justin Alo 6’2″

  142. Kazz May 6, 2011 3:21 pm

Since the SJSU live stats were COMPLETELY USELESS…

From the Fresno State Softball Fan Blog Site:

Final UH 8 SJSU 0 after five innings.

In the second, Jessica Iwata hit a 3-run homer after Kelly Majam singled and Jasey Jensen was hit by a pitch. In the third, Janessa Gutierrez entered the game as the third Spartans pitcher and was greeted rudely by Jensen. On the first pitch Gutierrez threw, Jensen roped a bases-loaded triple for the game’s final three runs.

Stephanie Ricketts played a complete game only allowing two hits with a shutout.

  143. Slugger May 6, 2011 3:22 pm

    iwwthm,

Jeremy Higgins is also listed as 6’1″

I didn’t realize we have like 6 or 7 QB’s. Looking forward to seeing who will take us into the MWC era.

Also looking forward to one year in which we don’t lose the entirety of our receiving core, or o-line or defense or new qb.

Since 2007 it seems that every year we have been dealing with losing an entire portion of our team and having to rebuild it.

New Mexico State got some huge girls on their team. Who hit the GW homer. Ralph?

  163. Ralph May 6, 2011 5:07 pm

Incoming SB player, Kayla Wartner, Sr., Escondido HS, C-1b, is batting 40 for 68, .588 BA, with 11 doubles, 6 triples and 8 Hr.

  164. Kazz May 6, 2011 5:09 pm

There is “huge” like “wow, she really has worked hard in the weightroom”.

    There is also “huge” as in “wow, .. ugh… WOW 😯 .. jesus… 🙁 “

  165. Ralph May 6, 2011 5:11 pm

Another HS sb incoming player is Jodie Burton, Mission Hills HS, Sr., CF-Inf, hitting 22 for 72, .303 BA, has good plate discipline with 13 BB, and only one strike out.

  166. Ralph May 6, 2011 5:16 pm

shortstop Maroda hit the walk off homer

  167. Kazz May 6, 2011 5:18 pm

68 at bats and not even in the playoffs yet for Kayla Wartner.

The sheer # of games played on the mainland compared to local Hawaii availability is not even close. Again, plain old game experience is hard to duplicate without having to play that many games.

Which is evident that local players like Jessica Iwata are astounding.

Not very often will one see a local softball player contribute in the way she has RIGHT out of high school. Even more notable is where she played in Kauai at the D2 level with less HS competition (i.e. fewer games).

Iwata is poised to become argueably the BEST local-born softball player to have ever played for the Rainbow Wahine and if she continues to impress beyond what we’ve seen already, maybe the best local-born softball player… PERIOD to date.

Good points Garret, have to disagree with you on travel costs, Las Vegas Bowl vs Hawaii Bowl. Since only one MWC team will play in either bowl, travel costs will be lower going to the Hawaii Bowl for UH. UNLV won’t be competitive for a while if ever.

  175. Ralph May 6, 2011 6:06 pm

I told Kazz I’m passing on the game, too wet, it rained nearly all day out west side.

  178. papajoe2 May 6, 2011 6:51 pm

Incredible thing about Willie Mays……he spent 2 years in the military during early years. Imagine the added number of homeruns, hits, steals and batting average he would have accumulated if he didn’t go into the military. He was the total package. He could hit for power and average, was fast and one of the best defensive players to ever play the game. I think he had something like 13 or 15 gold gloves while playing in center field.

  180. Garret May 6, 2011 7:21 pm

    Old Diver,

You are correct, my analysis was flawed on travel costs when UNLV doesn’t go to the Vegas Bowl…but the payout and the Pac-12 tie-in for the Vegas Bowl (the teams split $2 mil) is far superior to the Hawaii bowl payment (the teams split $1.5 mil and have to buy 10,000 tickets each) and C-USA opponent.

I actually don’t think that UNLV will be bad forever. They got Montana’s head coach and the stadium that is being talked about will seriously boost their recruiting and budget.

  181. Garret May 6, 2011 7:44 pm

New Mexico is horrible in football right now…but their basketball team makes a lot for the MWC.

Air Force and San Diego State had solid football teams and SDSU’s basketball team has been on an upward trajectory for the past few years.

Colorado State won a bowl game more recently than UH. They went to 4 or 5 bowls over the past 8 years and they won the MWC championship in football as recently as 2002. Their basketball team won 19 games last season and made the NIT.

When I look at the MWC, it seems to me that all their teams have earned their spots in their conference. Every team has had recent success in either football or men’s basketball. They get a lot of teams in the NCAA tournament and their teams win games…making money for every conference school.

I’m glad that UH is joining the MWC for football. Look at the 5 schools being left behind in the WAC and how they did against the 4 schools that are leaving for the MWC…20 games, 20 losses. WAC schools haven’t won a game in the NCAA tournament in forever, which means that none of the WAC schools have made any money for the conference in basketball.

  182. Garret May 6, 2011 7:46 pm

Air Force and SDSU had solid football teams last season…I left out the last season part.

I didn’t mention BYU, Utah, and TCU because they all obviously contributed a lot to the conference.

The main thing holding back the MWC right now is their lack of revenue due to their TV contract. Forget about the BCS system that is pennies compared to the regular season’s TV money. The MWC locked themselves into a 10-year contract that seriously underpays them and they don’t even get to make money on their local TV rights and they don’t have ESPN or Fox.

  183. Old Diver May 6, 2011 7:55 pm

    As always Garret, great information.

  184. Garret May 6, 2011 7:56 pm

Sportsbow just posted on another forum that UH offered a scholarship to OL Dustin Adams–6’5″, 290-pound OG from North Dakota. UH is his first offer, so hopefully that helps UH win the recruiting battle over him.

    http://hawaii.scout.com/a.z?s=219&p=8&c=1&nid=5301492

  185. Garret May 6, 2011 7:59 pm

    Old Diver,

I appreciate how you don’t take offense when people disagree with you and how you point out flaws in my points (like the travel costs for the Vegas Bowl). You gave me an excuse to look at the recent history for MWC schools, something that interests me since UH is joining them soon.

  186. Garret May 6, 2011 8:05 pm

I honestly believe that if the MWC’s TV contract was up now when other contracts are getting huge increases, they would at least triple their TV money. ESPN would bid a ton to get BSU and the rest of the schools…BSU brought huge ratings to ESPN over the past few years (more than any other non-AQ school).

That would means that UH would get some of that money since the payout from the conference would be more than what UH gets from PPV. It is too bad that the MWC is locked into a contract that will underpay them until 2016 or 2020.

If the MWC had a better TV contract that gave its schools their local TV rights (like the WAC, C-USA, Big 12, and SEC have) then BYU would never have left and their TV contract would be even bigger. Utah and TCU would have still left for AQ conferences, but BYU and BSU together would get big money from ESPN for the conference.

The only negative part of that scenario is that UH might have not gotten invited…UH was the last school invited, so if BYU stayed then maybe BSU/Nevada/Fresno would have left and UH would have been stuck in a WAC and been left for dead.

  191. Ralph May 6, 2011 8:33 pm

She verballed, got accepted to UH recently, don’t know about signing of NLI to date. I don’t know if there is a window when athletes can sign their NLI for sb. Her dad stated that she is coming to UH in the Fall.

2 QB’s gone after this year so after that, the race is wide open. Graves got skills — hopefully the leadership piece is in tact too. No way jose that Corey Nielsen is 5’11.

The AD has only two people in his inner circle: Drinking Buddy and Money Man.

McNamara and Clapp are outside the circle.

Every coach is outside of the circle.

ESPN and the WAC are outside of the circle.

Some people like to float theories because they like to watch the response.

ST, I know it isn’t “free play” time yet, but it is past 9pm where I am and I think this is a good place for me to get advice. I’ll go and look up articles after this to get back on topic.

Tomorrow is Lori’s birthday, and unfortunately I’m going to be across the country from her. I’ve tried to do all I could to make her birthday special, but can’t help but thinking that I’ve forgotten something. If anybody can think of something, please let me know either here or via e-mail (gokamoto@gmail . com, get rid of the space before and after the “.”).

This is what I’ve done so far:

    1. Flew in her best friend to be with her the entire time I’m gone. They hadn’t seen each other in 18 months.

    2. Got her the present she has been wanting for years…an ant farm! See her blog for details (http://blori.blogspot.com/2007/05/new-pets.html). That is way better than flowers to her…she honestly is kind of obsessed with watching her ants work now. The ant farm cost only $15 but you’d think I got her expensive jewelry or something.

    3. Told her to go out for every meal while I’m gone, and she has been doing so. Basically, she is spending my per diem. Thankfully, most places gave her free meal coupons for her birthday that she could use anytime within a week of her birthday.

    4. Will be sending her a letter tomorrow describing my love and appreciation.

What am I missing? I’m sure that there is something more that I could do even though I’m not there.

Hey, I arrived in Bangkok, Thailand with just $90 in my wallet, expecting to marry my boyfriend. He jilted me and left me high and dry.

Fortunately, I got a job teaching English at Thammasat University.

When I left Thailand 10 months later, I had $1,000 in my wallet.

Flew straight to Europe and lived there for 3 months.

Then I flew to New York City, where I lived, studied, and worked for 5-1/2 years.

Have you lost weight since retiring?

    05/06/07 @ 22:58

    Comment from: las vegas [Visitor]

    Gigi,

Ummm… actually no, many heavyweights have lost weight in order to live longer.

Others like Konishiki(Atisanoe)weight the same or have gained through non active life styles.

Some become lazy, some eat like they are still in training, others have limited mobility due to injuries received during their career.

Personally, when I went to Japan, I went in at 250lbs, within a few months I was down to 225.

Most of my career was at 240 or less (nowadays average upper division Rikishi is well over 300lbs)

When retired, I lived in both Japan and Honolulu, eating like a pro, within a year I had ballooned up to 310, ironic that I couldn’t hit my target weight as a wrestler but so easy to do at Rainbow drive-inn.

Since then, I’ve been as low as 235 and as high as 275, about 265 now.

Al — yeah, I almost didn’t use their comments in the beginning–it kinda choked me up too. But they were an integral part of the Warrior Beat and to omit them just wouldn’t be right. They are both on the original draft of the Tsai-ko caricature.

Long Time UH Fan is the semi-obscured person with the Chinaman’s hat in the back row. We did not know what he looked like until we finally met him in late May 2007. By then draft 3 was almost done so it was left as is except for a slight widening of the face. The person holding the football in the second row was supposed to be Ted Domay (FloridaTed), since ST sent him the Colt autographed football as a prize. We didn’t know what Ted looked like, so Louise used me as the model.

I hope their spirit and contributions are reflected in the few comments used. But to tell the truth, I pass over many of LTUHF’s– because my eyes get misty and some things are just too sad to remember, even today. Fred was the blog’s kindly grandfather… and he and Lorna were cruisers on par with Tom Mui–and Peaches and I spent hours at their house and mine talking story of shipboard life and travels. They got my football tickets when I could not make a game.

Garret – since the stadium authority is underfunded and UH has to play there, it’s not a bad thing that money goes to them and not to UH. It’s all state money in the end and however poorly or well they are run, the bottom line is, the Legislature takes away their money and leaves them to starve. Otherwise your analysis is sound.

The beauty of these blogging engines and CMS platforms will be the lack of limitations and ease of manipulation that allows developers to implement rich content and ‘skin’ the site in such a way that with quite little effort 1 would never notice what it’s making the internet site tick all without having limiting content and effectiveness.

I believe that avoiding processed foods could be the first step to be able to lose weight. They can taste beneficial, but ready-made foods have got very little vitamins and minerals, making you consume more simply to have enough vigor to get throughout the day. If you are constantly eating these foods, transitioning to whole grains and other complex carbohydrates will help you to have more vitality while eating less. Interesting blog post.

My own personal experience is that everyone should pretty much live and let live because what one person thinks just — another person simply doesn’t. People are going to do what they want to do. In the end, they always do. The best we can hope for is to point out a few things here and there that hopefully, allows them to make just a little better informed decision. Otherwise, great post.
