Chow: Public invited to training-camp practices in Manoa

Plans this week?

Cancel them.

In a U turn, the Warriors’ training-camp practices in Manoa will be open to the public.

The Warriors being training camp on Wednesday, and they will be working out in Manoa for a little more than a week.

After that, they will spend a little more than a week training at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. Because of Navy policy, those practices on base will be closed to the civilian public.

Head coach Norm Chow had originally wanted to close all of the training-camp practices to the public. But he decided it would be better to continue to keep open the relationship between his team and their fans.

Very, very tentative plans call for practices to start at about 2 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and at about 11 a.m. on Saturday.

  3. mo808 July 29, 2012 8:30 am

Thank you Coach Chow for the open practices. This is good PR!

  4. mo808 July 29, 2012 8:31 am

  5. polywarrior4life July 29, 2012 8:35 am

    Right on! Any schedule?

  6. Don Weir (We-Ah) July 29, 2012 8:37 am

    Aloha,

Speaking of schedules, Na Moa and the UH Letterwinners Club are planning on joining fans for the Friday reception prior to the USC game (UHAA Sponsored function) and we plan on hosting all Letterwinners in San Diego to a late morning/very early afternoon pizza lunch in Little Italy.

All tsaikos are always welcome to join us.

I hope to have all of the information posted by mid-week.

    Go Warriors!

  7. Don Weir (We-Ah) July 29, 2012 8:38 am

  8. wafan July 29, 2012 8:40 am

    Good Sunday, everyone!

  9. Stephen Tsai July 29, 2012 8:42 am

I had a doc’s appointment yesterday, plus I was still transcribing 10 hours of MWC interviews, so I figured, ah, nobody will notice if I didn’t post yesterday.

    I was surprised people noticed.

  10. wafan July 29, 2012 8:42 am

Hoping Mr. Tsai had a relaxing and non-invasive mini-staycation!

    Welcome back . . .

    Whoo-hoo!!!

  11. wafan July 29, 2012 8:43 am

So much for the mini-staycation thought.

  12. wafan July 29, 2012 8:43 am

    Yup, the spamalamers noticed, too.

  13. kev-1 July 29, 2012 8:44 am

Good move by Coach Chow. UH has to get the public excited about the team again to overcome so much disappointment in the offseason.

  14. mo808 July 29, 2012 8:46 am

I was choked from spam yesterday! Glad you’re back ST!

    Good Morning Gangeez!

We can all breathe a collective Tsigh of relief.

Practices are open and a new post is up! 🙂

  17. Da Punchbowl Kid July 29, 2012 8:51 am

Will we be seeing a mystery player or holy grail at the start of camp, Mr. Tsai?

  18. mctruck July 29, 2012 8:55 am

Good morning, ST……hope everything went well at doctors?

Still waiting for fuuuud pics while u were in LV???, no spam though.

  19. d1shima July 29, 2012 8:56 am

Congratulations Melanie Schlanger! Good as Gold!

  20. Wes'side Warrior July 29, 2012 8:57 am

Whew! Good to hear ST’s ok! Was worried maybe he suffered from spamatosis or something!

With all that’s been going on lately, I wouldn’t have minded closed practices. Besides, I can’t really do much all the way out here in Jawjah!

As long as the team stays focused! Main thing! Big season… and I think we got the players… we got the coaches… could go either way. How serious are we in grabbing that prize? Seventh place? Nah, I don’t think so. Prove ’em wrong, boyz!

  21. mctruck July 29, 2012 8:57 am

    ST,

Mr. Haretuku…got more info/stats bout this young man??

  22. Bugaz July 29, 2012 9:01 am

  24. papajoe2 July 29, 2012 9:24 am

Watching the Olympics. All kinds of sports going on. Always quietly cheer on the USA but vocally when an athlete with Hawaii ties is involved. I even watched water polo. The pool must be very deep. I would be interested to know how they do it because I never did see the horses.

  25. wafan July 29, 2012 9:26 am

    ppj2 . . .

    Hybrid sea horses.

  26. wafan July 29, 2012 9:27 am

I would like to thank the Tsai-kos that were able to attend the “Surprise Get-Together” for SteveM at Club Genji last night. I am glad to I had a chance to meet all of you.

I would like to thank Cenn and Stretch for their input, gmahoney for getting the cake for me, jm2375 for the delicious bread pudding, papajoe2 for the beautiful leis, and the presents to SteveM from mo808 and A-joe.

Hope to see all of you soon. I will be back. 🙂

  35. jm2375 July 29, 2012 10:14 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Nice to see that training camp, at least, will be open to the public.

Had a great time last night. Thanks Dory for setting all this up.

    GO USA!!

  36. d1shima July 29, 2012 10:17 am

Das it! I’m off of French fries for the rest of the Olympics! 👿

  37. d1shima July 29, 2012 10:18 am

    ….and French toast!

  38. A-House July 29, 2012 10:19 am

Sorry to say, but losing interest in UH sports – no inner spark to lite the fire – oh well, laters.

  39. gigi-hawaii July 29, 2012 10:23 am

Thought ST was in the hospital. Turns out he was having fun typing. Lol. I imagine he is still not finished transcribing…

  40. Supastoke July 29, 2012 10:23 am

Auryte! Coach Chow thank you…spam nation was killing it, take care ST.

  42. lava July 29, 2012 10:28 am

Can we wear long hair to practice?

  43. Stephen Tsai July 29, 2012 10:32 am

If you sat at our table last night you would have learned who mystery guy is. I talk more when I’m on my second Diet Coke.

  44. Will-I-am July 29, 2012 10:34 am

    Nice move coach Chow!

  45. gigi-hawaii July 29, 2012 10:43 am

I guess all that caffeine leads to loose lips.

  46. SteveM July 29, 2012 10:45 am

    Good morning everyone!

Mahalo to the Tsai-kos who attended the surprise dinner and karaoke at Club Genji. This was plotted by Dory from 2,700 miles away from 2 months ago with assistance from Cenn, Stretch, Art and Gaye.

My apologies to those who did not get her invitation, since I knew nothing of this (really good surprise) and Dory does not have access to my Karaoke Call list.

  47. WarriorNY July 29, 2012 11:00 am

Can someone please send ST another Diet Coke, or perhaps a Red Bull? This mystery guy suspense is killing me…

  48. AllG July 29, 2012 11:00 am

ST, any news if JT Turner has been accepted to UH and will be at training camp?

  49. Kekoa July 29, 2012 11:21 am

What happened at CG’s stays at CG’s. Mahalo Dory for the invite. BP withdrawls have led to Polynesian paralysis today. Jm2375, the cure is in your hands.

Last call ~ Funny you should mention Flute practice. My ears are still ringing from my great-grandkid’s flute session 2 days ago!

  50. jm2375 July 29, 2012 11:23 am

Kekoa – can send you da recipe. 🙄 😆

  51. tommui July 29, 2012 12:15 pm

    #52 Kekoa:

Usually musicians that sit near a flautist usually were ear-plugs because the high frequencies can wreak their ear-drums. Same thing applies when they practice.

  52. Kekoa July 29, 2012 12:26 pm

Jm2375 ~ You are willing to entrust the secret to the BP with me? I’m humbled. (do I have to sign a nondisclosure statement?)

  53. SteveM July 29, 2012 12:40 pm

Kekoa — BP nondisclosure agreement? Heck with that…sign the minimum production for pah-tay agreement instead… 🙂

  54. kev-1 July 29, 2012 12:59 pm

Amberlights wrote . . . “Coach Chow, invite Colt Brennan in to speak to the players about his NFL/CFL failure and how he tail-spinned into a lifestyle of lies, booze, and drugs. Colt’s message could work wonders with this program. Get well soon Colt.”

Kind of a bold claim to say that Colt led a lifestyle of lies, booze, and drugs simply based on the recent incident don’t you think? I’m not naive enough to think that this was his first time or whatever, but I think it is a bit unfair to say that was his lifestyle. But I guess some know more than others.

  55. kev-1 July 29, 2012 1:00 pm

I’m with you WarriorNY . . . will the nearest person to ST’s house please stop by with a sixer of the fake stuff.

  56. Da Punchbowl Kid July 29, 2012 1:04 pm

    kev-1 –

Its also a bold claim to make when nobody knows who you are and there is no accountability.

  57. kev-1 July 29, 2012 1:06 pm

DPK . . . so easy behind a computer screen.

  58. Da Punchbowl Kid July 29, 2012 1:31 pm

If you “love” Colt you don’t hide on a blog and say those kinds of things about him. If you know him that well, you see him face to face and speak your mind. Colt has been a true hero to many in Hawai’i and to the UH Football program. He’s also human. But most importantly, he’s real and can be held accountable for shortcomings and praised for his bravery. And unless you’ve ever suffered from a TBI, you truly have no idea what you’re talking about.

  59. Warrior Dave July 29, 2012 1:37 pm

    Warrior NY,

How was your family & friends gathering at Carmines?

  60. Warrior Dave July 29, 2012 1:39 pm

Someone per A-House someone is using his good name. Can’t be the real one in the prior post Fricken Losers that use someone else’s name.

  61. BigHiloFan2 July 29, 2012 1:43 pm

    amber

sorry to call you out. but the truth is, stand up. identify yourself. i’ve identified myself.

are you the holy grail? what junk you spew!

we can say that about each other. we are human. we’ve all gotten off more times than we should have.

  62. kev-1 July 29, 2012 1:51 pm

Amberlights . . . I don’t disagree with all of your opinion, just the assumptions. I do agree that Hawaii is too easy on Colt, but we can’t assume how a person lives his life based on incidents that make the news. I have done way worse than Colt, but still live a respectable life (by my own and other’s standards), but because nothing bad I have ever done has made it into the newspapers or on TV, few people know about it and I walk around every day without the burden of people casting stones at me.

Can you imagine living a life like that? I don’t think so. Everything that local “celebreties” like Colt do ends up in the media, good or bad. The public is then left to either minimize or exaggerate on the events as they see fit. That is more pressure than most can handle, considering the flawed nature of human beings in general.

With that said, I tend to agree that maybe Colt should have probably trained instead of returning to Hawaii on certain occasions, especially on those occasions when bad things have happened. But what gives me the right to say so? I would never let someone else tell me how to live my life, nor should anyone else. Decisions that people make are their own, mistakes and all. Colt has made is share for sure, but that doesn’t give you or me or anyone else for that matter the right to condemn him.

And as far as his attorney, I think you should consider the lawyer/client relationship a little closer. Lawyers tell their clients what to say, not the other way around. You can’t blame Colt for his lawyers poor excuses or justifications. I don’t think Green would have been informed enough about Colt’s medical condition to make that assessment. So I agree that it was in poor taste.

    Espana! 🙁

  64. jm2375 July 29, 2012 2:43 pm

d1 – apparently, that’s not the same team that won the Eurocup this year. It’s the U23 team. IDK why they decided to do that, but whatevas…

  65. Ipu Man July 29, 2012 2:52 pm

  66. Ipu Man July 29, 2012 2:54 pm

  67. Ipu Man July 29, 2012 2:55 pm

Of course we would need Uncle Sam to fund it for us…

  68. Ipu Man July 29, 2012 2:59 pm

Only 33 more days till we beat USC…

  69. tommui July 29, 2012 3:01 pm

#58 Kev-1 As the Dao points out: people that don’t know, speak out.

  70. Bugaz July 29, 2012 3:09 pm

Love your confidence. Close would be fine, but a victory over USC would be out of this world!

  71. WarriorNY July 29, 2012 3:11 pm

    Warrior Dave,

Thanks for asking. It was great. They had a special for Chilean Sea Bass. It was amazing. Hopefully next time we’ll get a NYC Tsaiko CC going…

    @63 DPK,

    Very well said…

  72. kapakahi July 29, 2012 3:16 pm

JHMO that this is a good call by Coach Chow…..for at least this first week of Fall Camp…..to re-build and keep the fan interest with the program.

  73. gigi-hawaii July 29, 2012 3:24 pm

I bet the players are super excited to start camp this week. I hope they don’t wither in this heat and humidity.

Hubby and I had lunch at ZPizza at Ward Center. When we got home, it was 85 degrees inside the house. We quickly turned on the a/c. It is now 75.

    ahhh…

  74. gigi-hawaii July 29, 2012 3:28 pm

I feel sorry for Colt and all these naysayers who just can’t mind their own business. Leave Colt alone, please.

He’s a private citizen now, no longer a football player.

  75. gigi-hawaii July 29, 2012 3:31 pm

Bulla: I saw you on TV News last night. What you and your friends did for the less fortunate in Hawaii was just wonderful. Let me know how I can donate financially to the cause. That’s the least I can do.

  76. Wes'side Warrior July 29, 2012 3:31 pm

We’ve been going back and forth between the 90’s and 100’s for a good month now, as many other places around the US have been experiencing record high temps. These kids (sports and bands) would surely welcome temps in the 80’s.

  77. gigi-hawaii July 29, 2012 3:34 pm

WW: I hope you have a/c!!!

  78. Ipu Man July 29, 2012 3:39 pm

  82. Wes'side Warrior July 29, 2012 3:51 pm

  83. Ipu Man July 29, 2012 3:51 pm

    Thanks WW

  84. Ipu Man July 29, 2012 3:52 pm

    Howz Moniz?

  85. Ipu Man July 29, 2012 3:54 pm

    Knee, leg or ankle?

Did he break the same broken bone again?

    Hopefully just a bad sprain.

    got details?

  86. Wes'side Warrior July 29, 2012 3:56 pm

Yes, we use the house ones, but try to not use the car a/c. Even though I change the cabin filter for the car, half of my family still gets an upper respiratory illness if it’s on too long. Guess that’s what happens with a car over 10 years old.

But my main concern is with the kids that are outside, practicing in this heat. Reminds me of being in the army, and having to tough it out. Crazy, what we go through to prove to ourselves that we can accomplish goals. Of course, that’s why every year, we read of tragic events due to overexertion in this heat.

  87. Wes'side Warrior July 29, 2012 3:57 pm

Initial report we got from the Force was a left ankle injury. Moniz was trying to stay off of it and put as little pressure on it as possible. No further word yet.

  88. Ipu Man July 29, 2012 3:58 pm

I remember taking “salt pills” on Ft Benning Georgia hikes…

  89. Wes'side Warrior July 29, 2012 3:58 pm

I’ll post an update as soon as we hear something.

  90. Ipu Man July 29, 2012 4:00 pm

Remember one big dude couldn’t take it. Had to give him half my canteen.

Think he didn’t take his salt pills.

    Give your kids potato chips…

  91. Ipu Man July 29, 2012 4:00 pm

    😆

  92. Wes'side Warrior July 29, 2012 4:01 pm

I could handle all that stuff. The thing that used to get me was shin splints… usually from those long road marches. Not easy to keep up when you’re short like me, carrying at least 70 lbs. in that ruck sack, and wearing combat boots, as opposed to some nice running shoes. Hahaha. If only they’d allow that!

  93. Ipu Man July 29, 2012 4:02 pm

Maybe ST can give Moniz a call if both have each other phone numbers.

  94. Ipu Man July 29, 2012 4:04 pm

Nowadays, they add on extra weight with armour plated clothing…

  95. Ipu Man July 29, 2012 4:07 pm

Parents, don’t let your sons become cowboys or infantry men.

Have them enlist in the Navy or Airforce instead.

  96. Wes'side Warrior July 29, 2012 4:08 pm

Yeah, true. Last road march I did was back in ’92! Can’t imagine what the load would be like now, on top of wearing body armor!

  97. Wes'side Warrior July 29, 2012 4:09 pm

I wonder if Moniz’s injury was on the same ankle that brought him down while at UH?

  98. Wes'side Warrior July 29, 2012 4:10 pm

Maybe that’s why he took extra care to not put pressure on it last night.

  99. Wes'side Warrior July 29, 2012 4:11 pm

    Wait…

Aren’t the lyrics, “Mamas, don’t let your babies grow up to be cowboys”?

  100. Ipu Man July 29, 2012 4:16 pm

It’s sad sometimes what happens to athletes. A friend at 24 Hr Fitness was playing basketball when another player stepped on my friend’s foot and tore her knee. She now has to undergo ACL surgery.

    Good luck to Moniz.

  103. d1shima July 29, 2012 4:26 pm

  104. mctruck July 29, 2012 4:44 pm

#120…Ipu Man…..I don’t know squat bout music/lyrics; matter of fact, I don’t ever listen to radio station music in my truck, even while at home. I’ve developed a habit turning to CNBC, watching the ticker tape stock information and discussions….geeez, am I a boring dude o-what???….Oh well.

  105. gigi-hawaii July 29, 2012 4:45 pm

mctruck: you invest in stocks? I got out of the stock market in 2008 and haven’t gone back.

  106. Ipu Man July 29, 2012 4:49 pm

Oh there goes my image of mctruck…I envisioned you sort of like the granny

goose cowboy driving a chevy pickup or ?
