Chilly reminder

AccuWeather predicts a high of 36 degrees for Sunday’s Super Bowl. If so, each ticket holder, according to ESPN, will receive a “warming packet” of hand warmers, gloves that allow users to text, and headphones to listen to the game.

Two months ago, it was 25 degrees at kickoff for the Hawaii-Wyoming game in Laramie. There was no warming packet, but plenty of scoring — a combined 115 points.

Just sayin’ …

Boynton Beach (Fla.) receiver/cornerback Darrian Josey reaffirmed his commitment to UH, saying he canceled plans to visit Syracuse.

“I’m going to play for Hawaii,” Josey told the Warrior Beat.

For those keeping track, it will be a high of 29 degrees in Syracuse on Super Sunday. Boynton Beach’s high will 79 degrees on Sunday.

Speaking of cool, let’s all wish “happy birthday” to Ka‘u’s finest: A-Joe.

The volleyball Rainbow Warriors head out on the road for a four-match trip, beginning with Thursday’s meeting against UC Santa Barbara.

Sounds like you are saying the fans of the NFL is a bunch of pansies.

    Grrrr..

  6. Stephen Tsai January 28, 2014 7:01 am

If I’m paying $3,715 for a ticket (the average price), darn it, I’d want a warming packet, too.

  7. UKU@LA January 28, 2014 7:05 am

    A-JOE have a great day!

  8. Stephen Tsai January 28, 2014 7:06 am

With the chill, you can get a hotel room for about $400 a night in the New York area. OK, make that New Jersey area. Toe-may-toes, toe-mah-toes.
It was only $89 a night at Laramie’s Fairfield Inn & Suites, so we were able to buy our own warming packets.

  9. Da Punchbowl Kid January 28, 2014 7:15 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

  14. tommui January 28, 2014 7:47 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Best wishes A-Joe – have a good one!

Tim – you are up early!

  15. Haleakala January 28, 2014 7:54 am

The NFL will really consider potential weather conditions in the future when picking sites for the Superbowl. Holding the game in an open air stadium on the East Coast in early February was an open invitation for problems.

  16. Former UH Athlete January 28, 2014 7:54 am

Hawaii’s weather is a nice reminder that players don’t have to endure bitter cold winters if they play for UH.

ST… $400/night… or you can take your chances at the HoJo in the cruddy part of the Bronx for $138… where your rental car may or may not have wheels the next morning.

Speaking of which, do criminals still leave cars on cinder blocks?

  17. Stephen Tsai January 28, 2014 8:02 am

    FUHA:
It appears you can get cinder blocks for $2 and up. But Home Depot says you can only buy them in stores, not online. Hmm. Wonder what the shipping cost would be for a cinder block?

  18. jm2375 January 28, 2014 8:13 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Happy Birthday to the Ka’u conversationalist and all-around great guy, A-joe!!!

Best accomodations for this year’s Super Bowl, if you were lucky enough to get invited, is the Bud Light floating hotel (aka Norwegian Getaway). Brand new cruise ship, 4000+ passengers. Think I’d just stay on board during the game and watch it on tv. 😀

    GO WARRIORS!!!!!!!!!!!
    GO WAHINE!!!!!!!

  19. kifi January 28, 2014 8:25 am

    Happy birthday A-Joe.

    Good morning everybody!
    Happy Birthweek A-joe!

  21. lopaka43 January 28, 2014 8:51 am

Stephen, Ian lind is calling you out on his blog today for your description of the NFL Players Union as “self-styled stakeholders” See http://www.ilind.net/

    He says:

“Is he really saying that the players–the actual people who play the game of football and take the risks it involves–shouldn’t at the table as stakeholders? Or that the players’ union is illegitimate?

Did Tsai mean to say any of these things? Or, one has to wonder, was the phrase inserted by an opinionated editor?

    Is some explanation in order?”

  22. Slugger January 28, 2014 8:53 am

    Good morning, gang!

    Happy birthday, A-Joe!!!

Darrian Josey will definitely feel more at home in Hawaii than Syracuse. Welcome aboard!

  23. Boolakanaka January 28, 2014 8:56 am

Being NY guy, I would not advise staying in the Bronx, unless you are awfully comfortable in urban environments. Unless, you have a really nice ride, minimal chance of it getting broken-in. If it is a nice ride, well, if it was broken into, no cinder blocks–think chop shop on Staten Island. A crew was recently arrested for over 20 million of luxury cars stolen in the last 5 years–that’s a whole bunch of cars–in a nutshell, some real professional crooks.

  24. Ipu Man January 28, 2014 9:19 am

  25. hawaiian January 28, 2014 9:53 am

    Hey Stephen,

No one mentioned the list of “trippers” from this past weekend…who were they?

  26. SteveM January 28, 2014 9:57 am

    Good morning everyone!

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY ADDAHKNOWJOE !!!

A-Joe. Blog Party 1 attendee, first Cattle Call, designer of the Tsai-ko logo, bass guitar player, singer (karaoke legend), dancer, and all around good guy. Click here to see his original Warrior Beat 2007 autobio posted by ST.

Enthusiastic plug: A-Joe is a great graphic designer but don’t be surprised to hear him talking rocket science with Garret. He is now an independent designer/sign person and available for business.

  27. Former UH Athlete January 28, 2014 9:58 am

Just was watching Josey’s video… which led me to watching his QB’s video (Lamar Jackson).. That kid looks like he has a very high potential also. 247 sports shows that UH has offered to Jackson, but Florida St has an offer out also and he was visited by one of the UCF coaches. Utah St has also offered.

Maybe, just maybe, Josey can persuade Jackson to come to Hawaii also. FYI, Jackson is class of 2015. Also, after watching that video… just about every WR on that team appears to be fast.

  28. Truman January 28, 2014 10:01 am

ST, off topic but your alma mater is making national news with the lockdown. These shootings at schools sure are a problem.

  29. Truman January 28, 2014 10:23 am

I just heard more news about the shooting incident and it looks like HPD shot a student runaway who was wielding a kitchen knife. Looks like everything is under control.

  30. Inyoface January 28, 2014 10:25 am

Receiver’s seem to be the deepest position on the roster.

    RE: #18 & 23

jm2375 — If I got a Bug Light invite, I’m thinking the same thing…only got 4 days to explore the ship.

Boolakanaka — just found this negative spin on the Bud Light scheme at Pier 88. Take over adjacent area and construct a concert amphitheatre across the street and a two level 1,500 person lounge next to the Intrepid Air & Space museum…

  34. Kevin January 28, 2014 12:19 pm

If anyone was wondering, it appears UH’s spring sports across the board avoided an NCAA post season ban as the women’s track team moved into their locker rooms today as posted on Twitter by the AD.

The photo on his social media page on Twitter shows a group shot of the team, but you can’t see much of the room itself.

However, you can see the metal style grill lockers (ala high school style) in there and Im NOT 100% positive but… they look awfully familiar to the old lockers that once occupied the softball and soccer locker rooms prior to the renovation done last spring 2013. Again it seems like they didnt throw those away and saved them and placed them in the Ching Complex for use.

  35. bowwar January 28, 2014 12:22 pm

More information on the recruit visits would be nice.

  36. al January 28, 2014 12:34 pm

  54. Buffoman January 28, 2014 4:38 pm

#46 maybe the guy is older but there was a guy named Dwight Sato who was at McKinley and played LB.

  59. al January 28, 2014 7:08 pm

kapakahi…yup. he’s the one. hope he’s as good in the classroom as he is on the field.

  60. boolakanaka January 28, 2014 7:25 pm

54…Thanks Buffoman, I stand corrected it was Dwight Sato that I was making reference to–too many hits in old Riddell helmets have taken their toll.

  64. kapakahi January 28, 2014 8:31 pm

    #59,

JMHO that would make a ideal FB.

Strong inside runner……with low center of gravity.

A good run blocker…..with soft hands.

  65. 3-Prong January 28, 2014 8:32 pm

Furuta was a standout these last couple of years. I predict he will be a fan favorite before he finishes his career here. Bugga was one tough LB & FB!

  66. turfwar January 28, 2014 9:44 pm

http://jcfootball.scout.com/a.z?s=87&p=8&c=1&nid=7299033 Jalens a good sized corner who might have 3 to play 3.

  67. turfwar January 28, 2014 9:48 pm

A year ago when UCLA’s Jeff Ulbrich showed up on the Mililani campus and asked Coach Rod York if he had any players Rod endorsed Furuta as the teams best prospect despite being just a junior.

  68. wafan January 29, 2014 2:52 am

    Good morning!

  69. Boolakanaka January 29, 2014 6:42 am

Really enjoyed the article on Jocelyn Noga this morning. The young lady has exactly the the right attitude towards college athletics; one, it’s all about the degree and, two, enjoy the ride. Very impressive!
