Greg McMackin reportedly received his $600,000 severance check the past week, thus putting an official end to his working association with UH.

His tenure will be remembered for developing Alex Green, Greg Salas, Corey Paredes, Mana Silva, Vaughn Meatoga, etc.; giving coaching jobs to Nick Rolovich, Dave Aranda, Brian Smith and Tony Tuioti;  starting the summer camps; implementing the summer bridge program; improving the APR scores; and introducing phrases such as “This ain’t P.E. football.”

Best wishes to McMackin and his family.

It’s the dead period again while coaches head to the football convention this weekend. UH is paying for members of the 2011 coaching staff to attend.

* * * * *

Norm Chow, who has been recruiting on the mainland, is expected back in town Monday night. He will be finalizing a couple of hirings early this coming week.

Meanwhile, assistant coach Lewis Powell, who will not be attending the convention, has been busy. Yesterday, he recruited in both California and Utah.

but get plenty competition, as evidenced by the 400 applicants to UH’s positions.

  14. kev-1 January 7, 2012 8:26 am

soooo . . . UH will pay for coaches to go to the convention? What coaches? We have 3 and one isn’t going? How generous of UH to make that offer knowing we have very little to send. Wonder if the same offer would be made if we had a full coaching staff.

  15. kev-1 January 7, 2012 8:28 am

Actually, if the coaches from the old staff are still under contract, does that mean they get to go? If that’s the case, it is actually cool of UH to send them.

  16. Old School Dave January 7, 2012 8:28 am

Good luck to Coach Mac. He did a number of good things to improve the program. I’m sure he’ll land on his feet again as a DC at a BCS school, if not this season, then surely in 2013.

  17. kev-1 January 7, 2012 8:29 am

Okay, now I feel STUPID. Just read your post again . . . 2011 coaches. Please ignore my previous posts. Good job UH for sending the coaches.

I’ve heard that those coaches conventions can be a sobering sight with the large number of unemployed coaches looking for work. Maybe not as bad as going down to Punchbowl Street to apply for unemployment, but somewhat similar in many respects.

SMU putting it on coachless Pitt early in the “who cares what name it is Bowl.” Heard they don’t even have enough coaches to put anyone in the box upstairs.

Interesting story line for the bowl game though . . . didn’t the Pitt coach take the job that got yanked from JJ?

Off to see the wizard… 🙂

  38. madeinhawaii January 7, 2012 9:26 am

Without Mack, we may lose much of the June Jones connection and with that any future American Samoa Football Academy clinics.

  39. sports for fun January 7, 2012 9:32 am

So, was Desmond Dean projected to start or at least contribute in 2012? Is he still on the roster?

  40. sports for fun January 7, 2012 9:35 am

Maybe we should try to schedule Florida St. for Sept. 8. I know the team has played back to back road games for the last three years, but we could use the money and the exposure. Plus it goes with Coach Chow’s words, “Bring ’em on!”

  41. Da Punchbowl Kid January 7, 2012 9:36 am

Aloha and mahalo nui loa to Coach Mack and of the former assistants. Thank you so much for the memories and for all you’ve done for the people of Hawaii.

  45. Stephen Tsai January 7, 2012 9:53 am

I was told last week UH is only going to play 12 games in 2012.

I think they should play 13 because: 1) Makes more money. 2) If you don’t use Hawaii exemption, NCAA might wonder why it’s needed.

  46. rainbowfan January 7, 2012 9:55 am

Looks like Ferd is saying in his column today that Norm will have a tough first year, maybe having a chance at 6 -6 and ferd hopes that a 13th game is not added to the schedule for 2012.

Note that if Mack didn’t have the last game in the 2011 schedule, he would have been 6-6 and in the Hawaii Bowl.

  47. sports for fun January 7, 2012 10:02 am

DPK, isn’t that the day the Downtown Athletic thingy opens?

  48. A-House January 7, 2012 10:04 am

would not mind if Florida St is willing to visit Hawaii on 9/8/12, but very unlikely as they play Florida the following week – eye tink!

bad for Hawaii to play 3 consecutive road games to start the season – USC, Florida St, and BYU.

however agree with Coach Chow if you want to be the best you play the best.

  49. sports for fun January 7, 2012 10:06 am

The Hawaii Exemption is pretty obsolete with most conferences going with championship games. I think the best UH could do is play an FBS team, WAC, or C-USA team.

  50. sports for fun January 7, 2012 10:07 am

OH! Big 12 team is a possibility because they wont have 12 teams for the next year or two.

    Manoa2

    That’s good to know.

  54. ai-eee-soos January 7, 2012 10:13 am

I would rather keep the schedule at 12 games.

12 games are enough for our players, same as other schools.

It’s unfair to burden our players to make long road trips, just to make money

for the athletic dept. “It’s not their job” to make money for the school; don’t want to take this point any further.

And, yeah it’s easier to qualify for a bowl game at 6-6, instead of 7-6.

    12-game schedule is enough.

  55. d1shima January 7, 2012 10:13 am

    DPK,

Isn’t that when you and Sweety go on an extended walk down the hill?

  56. madeinhawaii January 7, 2012 10:14 am

If we can’t get an early week exemption, maybe Hawaii should ask for an exemption to play 2 FBS teams each year? Why not? We’d always be able to get that 7th home game at a price we can afford. Not exactly the kind of game that sells season tickets, though, but it could make up the difference in travel costs.

  57. sports for fun January 7, 2012 10:19 am

DPK, Downtown Athletic Club that Chris Hart mentioned over his radio show…or is that suppose to open on Monday? Geez, now I’m confused…

  58. sports for fun January 7, 2012 10:23 am

Maybe UH should petition the NCAA is start the season a week earlier for 13 games. Tell them due to the difficulty of scheduling late games because of other conference’s championship games played the same week.

  59. oldie January 7, 2012 10:25 am

    Morning Tsaikos!

Aren’t we playing 2 FCS teams in 2012? And only 1 would count toward bowl eligibility? So how does a 13th game factor in? Too complicated for me.

Agree with mih. Would be good if UH was allowed an early game.

  60. madeinhawaii January 7, 2012 10:29 am

    oldie…

A Division 1 team can only play 2 FCS teams every so many years and only one of those games counts towards bowl eligibility.

I wouldn’t mind seeing the Warriors play a FCS team come senior night… We get to bid Aloha to our departing seniors with greater chance of a win… and have a good possibility of seeing the next season’s replacements on the field, as well.

The Football Academy will be led by Southern Methodist University Head Football Coach June Jones and several past and present NFL players of Samoan descent including San Francisco 49er great Jesse Sapolu, the “Throwin Samoan” Jack Thompson and legendary Pro Bowler Junior Seau. Serving as Honorary Ambassadors once again are Penny & Paul Loyd.

If us average Joes deposited a check for $600,000.00, the teller would bring it to the attention of the branch manager and or a personal banker to follow.

Then “Average Joe” would all of a sudden become Mr. Money Bags and the bank would need to find a new pair of kneepads and perhaps a chin protector for their new found client.

At that point the waiting period of the check could be in a different category.

if I say so again, and again and again – only 2 teams can play for the conference championship thus leaving “mucho” teams that can be invited to the early December game in Hawai each year.

JD needs to offer invitations to the “mid-level” teams in the BCS conferences that will probably never smell a championship game – if that happens, then stay with 12 games for that year.

  75. kapakahi January 7, 2012 11:17 am

    #39 sports for fun,

I recall the Desmond saw limited action on obvious passing situations against CU in season opener, but the sustained some kind of leg injury in the 2nd or 3rd game of the season and was out injured the rest of the season….so may eventually be eligible for medical redshirt for 2011 season.

Saw Desmond on the field in plain clothes the rest of the last 2011 season so I’m assuming that he’s still on the team. Injury seemed severe enough that I wouldn’t expect him ready for Spring ball anyway.

  76. madeinhawaii January 7, 2012 11:18 am

SMU and Boise going to a BCS conference … makes you feel left out, eh?

Ironically, for all those anti-sports people at UH, what they want for UH in terms of prestige, image, and position in the world of Universities, is also tied into becoming a part of the PAC12/16. When UH is “good” enough to be included in that group, it will have reached a milestone in many other ways that go well beyond athletics.

Hi Jim and Happy New Year.

With all of this conference realignment going on, and with most of them having a conference championship game, plus some of them playing 9 conference games to go with the championship game, did you ever consider declaring a hardship on UH scheduling and asking the NCAA about adding an extra week at the beginning of the season for all teams in football and make it a 15 week regular season schedule? This will make it easier for all teams to schedule UH without losing one of their bye week. For those teams that don’t play UH, they will have that extra bye week and it will make their scheduling much easier also. Teams that play at UH will still have 2 bye weeks in the regular season, while teams that don’t play at UH will have 3 bye weeks, which they had originally before the NCAA allowed the 12th game for everyone.

With this current 14 week regular season schedule, most of the schools don’t want to lose that bye week by playing an extra game and leave them with only one bye week in a season. Some of the teams were unable to schedule a 13th game when playing at UH because they either don’t want to lose that bye week or, had a hard time finding teams to play them because of the same reason about losing a bye week.

The most important thing about adding an extra week to the schedule is that, it gives student athletes for all schools more time in classes during the regular season. If the NCAA really care about the student athletes education, they should consider adding this extra week to the season.

I hope you consider asking the NCAA this. Just look at the upcoming 2012 schedule. It seems like you’re having a hard time in finding the 13th game. What I’m trying to say is, if you don’t ask, then you will never know! No harm in trying.

    Sportsbow –

I brought this exact issue up to Craig Thompson, Commissioner of the Mountain West Conference, at our fall athletic directors’ meeting in Dallas. He understands the issue and we will be submitting legislation through the Mountain West Conference (MWC) requesting that the University of Hawaii and any football program that utilizes the Hawaii exemption may be able to schedule a football game one week earlier than the official start of the football season. The normal timeframe for submitting new legislation is in early summer, so we’ll be working with the MWC over the next few months to come up with the exact language for the proposed legislation. Frankly, I don’t know if this legislation will be approved, but I feel very strongly that it needs to be considered (and hopefully approved). We shall see…

South Alabama joins the Sun Belt in 2012 – therefore, they are of legal age.

And, yes, THEY play a 13-game schedule in 2012.

If you guys insist on a sept 8 game, have JD sked a HOME game vs. Sun Belt Conf,

as they haven’t finalized their conf sked yet. That’s if someone has an open date.

I’ve been talking about starting the season earlier for months now and even emailed JD. I also emailed him about trying to schedule the 3rd place team of a “championship game” conference at the end of the season season for their 13th game, since the top 2 will be involved in a championship game at the end of the season. Having a 15th week will give the student atheletes at UH 2 weeks off during the season, which is great since everytime we travel, its a long and grinding process for studying. Also, while starting earlier, there wouldn’t be any school for the student athletes on both teams, so it wouldn’t take away a week of study. The games at Aloha Stadium are mostly attended by non students so I don’t attendance will be too greatly affected. The students hardly go to the games anyway.

I saw a big kid get off a Hawaiian flight from LA not too long ago. He had his high school team apparel on but a UH football hat….i wonder if he is a recruit….he looked like a lineman.

  108. PIAA DS January 7, 2012 3:31 pm

#20 – I wouldn’t call it a sobering experience. There are about 7000 coaches, high school, college, pro, at the convention. I saw several hundred along the Riverwalk today. Very upbeat, weather is great, beer is flowing as it will be for the next 3 days. It is always sad to see the 100’s of resume’s posted on the job boards and talk to coaches who are between jobs, but its the nature of the job however horrible, and they know when they get into coaching there is no security for assistant coaches beyone one year.

  109. Ralph January 7, 2012 3:34 pm

K State mbb rebounds with a win over #6 Missouri today after a double digit loss to #15 Kansas earlier in week. Next up for the ‘Cats, #5 Baylor.

  110. PIAA DS January 7, 2012 3:36 pm

MADDEN 2012 Update… thanks for all the emails. We do have several confirmed players you can bid to play against we can post..the rest will be posted when they confirm by email, that they will be there. Its ‘Celebrities Choice’, as one NFL player (TBA) told us he doesnt play Madden, but he loves Call of Duty – so when his bidding opens it will be Call of Duty. But for now we have confirmed Kealoha Pilares (says hes practicing!), Chad Owens, Vaughn Meatoga, Corey Paredes, Colt Brennan, Ryan Grice Mullen, Brashton Satele…the others will be listed soon. I’m in San Antonio for the AFCA conference, so soon as I get back, Ill put these guys up for bid – please come, have fun and bit to play your favorite former UH football star! http://www.pacificathleticalliance.com for more info!

  111. d1shima January 7, 2012 3:42 pm

Stafford looks quite comfortable in the SuperDome…again! 😈 👿

  112. PowderPuff January 7, 2012 3:49 pm

Haha…that’s right, d1! The last drive looked EASY! duffer/whitey: Maui looks fabulous on the Golf Channel this weekend. WOW!

  113. Old School Dave January 7, 2012 4:03 pm

#110: Indeed. Always good to have a backup plan given the unstable nature of being an assistant coach at the college level. I think that former UH BB assistant Jackson Wheeler is a realtor now.

  114. Old School Dave January 7, 2012 4:04 pm

    oops… I meant #108, sorry.

  115. d1shima January 7, 2012 4:14 pm

    PP,

Bad visions of Stafford handing off to Knowshon Moreno and passing to Mohamed Massaquoi on that field….

  116. mikesmith January 7, 2012 4:34 pm

Boring da dead period ho hum

  117. mo808 January 7, 2012 4:34 pm

Oh when the Saints, go marching in…

  118. mikesmith January 7, 2012 4:35 pm

I wonder why it is so quiet about the Coaching hires?

  119. duffer January 7, 2012 4:41 pm

Hey PP watch for da kid carrying the scoring sign.

  120. duffer January 7, 2012 4:42 pm

Steve Stricker shoots -10 today. Freaking awesome!

  121. mo808 January 7, 2012 4:54 pm

    Saints score again! Woohoo!

    GO WARRIORS!

  122. madeinhawaii January 7, 2012 5:14 pm

Wonder if any coaches got hired, yet?

    Too quiet.. kinda spooky…

    boo!

  123. whitey January 7, 2012 5:19 pm

duffer, so that’s where you stay hiding. tell the kid to keep smiling cause it is truly a great day on maui and hawaii nei.

  124. mikesmith January 7, 2012 5:28 pm

madeinhawaii, weird right? I agree, super tight lipped. What is really crazy to me is that a lot of coaches (new head coaches) have been announcing 1 to 2 hires a day the last couple of days. There is a lot of movement and news at many of the other schools who are in transition but we get the 2 young guys and that is it. I will say this, if Norm, Powell, and Raush can out recruit the other schools in MWC, just the 3 of them, we are going to be way good over the years.

  125. mikesmith January 7, 2012 5:30 pm

If a Vet like Chow can get these 2 former Grad assistants into homes and on the road and on the phone and we do better in recruiting than the other schools, what does that say about JJ’s and Mack’s recruiting philosophy. That is crazy that we seem to be doing better than Mac did in the previous 4 years and we only have 3 coaches recruiting. Amazing

  126. d1shima January 7, 2012 5:31 pm

All the coaches are in San Antonio.

It’s like a Coaches’ Swap Meet….I’d expect lots of “huddling” going on this weekend.

  127. d1shima January 7, 2012 5:33 pm

Oh well. Looks like the Niners are gonna hafta be “Who dat”

  128. A-House January 7, 2012 5:36 pm

a very big mahalo to DPK for the lead on an anti-virus program!

took a while to down load and about 11 hrs last night to scan our computer – being the consumate illiterate with electronic equipment, I failed to read/comprehend what I had to do to “re-start” our usual, last program.

the new anti-virus not only quaranteed, but removed all the 299 “bugs” in our hard drive.

now, it’s operating at warp speed!

    thanks, Timmy!!!

  129. A-House January 7, 2012 5:40 pm

    d1:

maybe the current Niners will return the team to its former glory – “championships” all the way around

but, it will tough work ahead in the play offs.

for the past 10 years, my co-worker had always put $$$ down on the 49ers to win their division, EXCEPT this year – oh, he is banging his head against walls

  130. jeepin January 7, 2012 5:45 pm

Nick rolo is on the 6:20 pm flt to sa antonio

  131. d1shima January 7, 2012 5:45 pm

    A-house,

The Saints are a tough draw but hopefully the outdoor venue will do something to Drew Brees’ timing…or something! 😯

  132. madeinhawaii January 7, 2012 5:46 pm

I hope the new DC is a big surprise… one that had to be kept under cloak and dagger until the contract was signed and the ink had dried. Wonder if it’s an established DC or maybe a HC from an FCS school and therefore some buyout was involved? Or a coach in the pros waiting for his team to get eliminated in the playoffs? 😉

  133. mo808 January 7, 2012 5:50 pm

Yup, yup, yup… Game over! 45-28 Saints

  134. Kyong Mostafavi January 7, 2012 5:52 pm

next weekend, a boat load will be flying in.

  143. jkjones January 7, 2012 6:55 pm

    @125. good point.

But, fans bought into the hype, with fanatical loyalty. Most, are so trusting it is painful.

Trust your eyes. So far, Norm Chow has been a pleasant surprise with no smoke and mirrors….

    Shoot!

Just when erryboddy started getting excited about the WC offense….

The last three quarterbacks Dana Holgorsen coached — Case Keenum at Houston, Brandon Weeden at Oklahoma State, and his current quarterback, Geno Smith at West Virginia — all led their teams to bowl victories, including two in BCS games.

The Air Raid bunch averaged 35-51-444 yds. Total of 12 TDs, 1 Int.

Did I just read that Rolo is on a plane to San Antonio? Coaches convention? Interview with Chow? Where is Chow btw? Where the heck are the birdies. Today has been TOO QUIET! ST must be sitting on something big.

    http://www.afca.com/article/article.php?id=1203

  159. madeinhawaii January 7, 2012 9:24 pm

If the convention starts on the 8th and goes on till the 11th, and Norm Chow is expected to arrive on Monday, the 9th,… how does he meet up with Rolo? So does that mean Rolo is gone?

  160. Curt January 7, 2012 10:22 pm

    mih,

Stormin’ Norman could still meet Rolo at the end of the week. Though, I wouldn’t put any $ down that he’ll retain any coaches. We’ll find out soon enough.

  161. SteveM January 7, 2012 10:47 pm

Curt — I was at the Hale Koa this week and noticed that the Warrior Lounge listed karaoke on Saturday night again.

  162. al January 7, 2012 11:03 pm

curt…both rolo and tuioti will have face to face mtgs w/chow.

    I would imagine that two things happen at these interviews;

one, chow will see if they could work together or not.

two, chow, if they get past the first stage, will offer a position/salary.

three, Tony/rolo will have to decide if the Hawaii offer is feasible.

therefore, within 24 hours a decision will be rendered.

sidebar: rest assured that both have options available to them. they will land on their own two feet in either case. I heard they have offers.

  163. tommui January 7, 2012 11:18 pm

Coach Chow is at the coaches convention in San Antonio but is supposedly expected to be in Hawaii on Monday evening.

Coach Rolo is on his way to San Antonio.

The convention begins tomorrow – January 8 and the convention ends on Wednesday the 11th.

Taking all these “facts” and knowing that the usual way to get to San Antonio from Hawaii is to fly into Dallas and catch another flight to San Antonio.

Under this scenario, Rolo could meet with Coach Chow on Sunday late afternoon or evening.

I have some doubts as to whether Coach Chow will be in Hawaii on Monday evening unless he is in San Antonio only for the social aspects. I doubt if the first day at the convention will be anything other than shake hands and talk stories though he may be there to do some interviewing.

At least that is what my tea-leaves are telling me. (Sorry, no birdie information or what is being heard on the streets… just tea leaves).

  164. ai-eee-soos January 7, 2012 11:22 pm

someone posted that Rolo had offers from NewMexState and Idaho.

don’t know if offers were for OC.

my post was that Rolo should leave the nest and fly on his own.

if NMState was for OC – take it. There’s a pretty good QB there for the next two years.

bottom line – young coaches can move around; learn a lot; gain experience.

A big bucks job will be waiting for the successful ones.

  197. krump1_AKA_protector January 8, 2012 7:33 am

    zippy on 187,

If Colt was given a whole season as a starter the way Sanchez, Flacco, Ryan and others have been afforded bonafide opportunities, I doubt he would have all zeros. How many games did he get to start, zippy? I believe it’s zero and that’s what I think of your simplistic assessment. You can call Ryan Leaf a bust. He had real opportunities. Colt is waiting for his.

  198. kev-1 January 8, 2012 7:44 am

If Colt plays in the NFL, the CFL, in his back yard, or never again, what business is it of anyone else? I’m sick of reading people bad mouth him and call him a bust and insult him in so many ways.

  199. kev-1 January 8, 2012 7:46 am

    ai-eee-soos on 164,

If Chow fires Rolo and Coach Tony, then it’s fine to look at plan B for any opportunities elsewhere. In Rolo’s case, I strongly disagree that he has to go elsewhere to “learn and gain experience”. He needs the opportunity to finish what he started. What does Rauscher and Powell have on their resumes? As I recall, in the last season, wasn’t Rolo the OC for the Top Passing Offense in the nation, one of the Top Total Offenses and responsible for coaching Moniz to 5,000+ passing yards (9th highest passing total in NCAA history)? If you”re among those that slammed the Offense this past season, the main reason(s) the O didn’t click as in previous seasons was / were the injuries and inconsistent protection by the O-Line. Our receivers would’ve done even better if that situation had been addressed. Unbelievably, a number of posters wanted to get rid of this Offense (some said “clean house” and start over) because there was no “vertical” game. How the heck can you get a vertical game if you have less than 3 seconds for the QB to go through his progressions and get rid of the ball. Get real. I’d like Chow to let Rolo stay on as OC, and then have both collaborate on a hybrid combo of the Run ‘n shoot and pro-set offenses. Chow can even take credit for his OC’s genius and for “mentoring” a protege. Fine, I don’t care as long as Rolo stays. If Chow fires him through short-sightedness or the inability to share the credit, then you might get your wish. Be careful what you wish for though, because it can come back to bite you…big time.

  204. Bleed Green and White January 8, 2012 8:12 am

    Wow, so much speculation!

Fact is, Norm Chow is NOT, repeat, NOT attending the coaches convention in San Antonio.

Fact is, Norm Chow is NOT returning to Hawaii on Monday, January 9th.

These, my fellow bloggers, are the facts. The rest is purely speculation.

Can we all not be patient with all of this, it will work itself out.

We all cannot get what we want or who we want to be the assistant coaches. Let Norm Chow do what he wants on the hiring. Sure some will fail as not all assistants pan out, otherwise all teams would be undefeated. who would lose? Only lesser talent?
