Chat with Mack

Blog readers (and lurkers) are invited to a Q-and-A session with coach Greg McMackin at 7 p.m. Wednesday (July 6) in the Warriors’ conference room.

There is no admission fee, but those wishing to attend need to email stsai@staradvertiser.com or text (808) 256-0223 through Tuesday for a head count.

Safety Marcus Umu, who joined the Warriors as a grayshirt in January, will not play for the Warriors this coming season. He will focus on academics during the fall semester. By mutual agreement, he will rejoin the Warriors as a walk-on in 2012.

* * * * *

Even student managers are training. Then again, Kyle Kamau, who is entering his fifth year as manager, has a lot of responsibilities, including sometimes serving as a scout quarterback. Here is Kamau using a track hurdle as a pull-up bar.

  2. Stephen Tsai July 1, 2011 12:38 am

    Kekoa:

Nope. This woud be in the actual coaches’ conference room.

He might even provide a tour of the offices.

  3. Kekoa July 1, 2011 12:38 am

    Yikes! Foist & 2nd?!

  7. Stephen Tsai July 1, 2011 12:42 am

And, by the way, we’re not relaying questions for those who don’t attend. If people want updates on quarterbacks or wish to discuss contracts, they should show up.

  9. TP July 1, 2011 12:43 am

He was on a scholarship during the spring semester.

Whoaaa… this could reduce guesses, speculation and severely affect the blog comment count. 🙁

On the other hand, maybe not as discussions move to another level. 🙂

ST — Thank you for arranging this.

  18. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 1, 2011 1:30 am

Oh the QnA sounds fun. I am going check on my schedule for the night and will email.

I think 1 question will suffice.

    1) Are you willing to take an extended pay cut? Why or why not?

I’ll either get Pat Hill or he can go all Jim Calhoun on my butt. ROLF! DO SOME RESEARCH! LOL.

    or

    2) What’s are the odds that UH would accept the transfer of a highly regarded, QB from a BCS school in 2011?

    Thrilling Aloha Friday to all!

  24. CoolEthan July 1, 2011 2:56 am

    Re: naming rights

I don’t understand companies that dish out enormouns money for just the title right, with no service or goods that are included at the stadium. If it is only name branding, just getting the name out there, that is so passe’ mkt.

So if L & L was chosen as example, do they get top Kiosks rights during events? You betcha, and gets the return is food sales, etc.

If it was Continental Airlines title, does it really want to make me fly them ? not really.

  25. wafan July 1, 2011 3:01 am

Some of us cannot attend the Q & A with Mack. Will there be live reports/updates? That would be awesome!

Thank you, Mack, for the opportunity.

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/ncaa-finances.htm

An enterprising blogster could use a simple algorithm and develop a top 25 CFB ranking that takes the AP or ESPN top 25 and discounts the money spend by each program to come up with a “true” top 25 showing schools that make the most out of the least. That would start to reduce the incentive to buy your way to the top.

  27. wafan July 1, 2011 3:13 am

20% tuition hike at the UW. Nothing compared to CA schools at something like 35%.

UH students need to keep their mouths shut if their $50 athletic fee goes up.

“I really haven’t worried about it really,” first-year CU coach Jon Embree said of his preferences as it relates to scheduling, which is handled primarily by athletic director Mike Bohn. “All I’ve been thinking about is Hawaii.”

“We did lose to Montana State a few years ago, right?” Embree added with regard to the prospect of facing UNC or another FCS foe. “So you’ve got to play every week no matter who they put out there.”

Poutasi, a 6-foot-5-inch, 325-pound offensive tackle, said he has scholarship offers from 17 schools. Arizona, Arizona State, Boise State, Hawaii, Idaho, Oregon State, San Diego State, Southern Methodist, UCLA, UNLV, Utah and Washington are among programs he’s considering.

“I’m pretty open to anything,” said Poutasi, who some schools like at guard.

    Great Morning All!

Nice that Kamau keeps in shape but split duties as Scout QB? Really?

How many QB’s on the roster? 😕

  34. d1shima July 1, 2011 6:24 am

from the article about the Stadium Authority

Vice chair Kenneth Marcus told the group he has written the governor and, “asked for an explanation as to what it was he sought to achieve that he felt this board stood in the path of achieving.”

Marcus said he is awaiting a response.

Don’t hold your breath, Mr. Blue. 🙄

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Happy Aloha Friday and start of a 3-day weekend!

It’s July, where has the year gone? Still, volleyball and football can’t come fast enough!

  38. Stephen Tsai July 1, 2011 6:50 am

  39. gigi-hawaii July 1, 2011 6:51 am

The chat with Mack should be interesting.

    Sorry I can’t go.

Can people take their laptop and blog about it there?

  40. Stephen Tsai July 1, 2011 6:57 am

No, there will be no blogging from the chat.

That link is from Feb. I can’t google anything recent on Tate Forcier so I would say he is still a free agent.

  43. Stephen Tsai July 1, 2011 7:31 am

I hear there’s a lot of behind-the-scenes concerns about the field deal that need to be resolved.

  44. Stephen Tsai July 1, 2011 7:33 am

Forcier is a free agent. He never enrolled at Miami.

  45. Da Punchbowl Kid July 1, 2011 7:53 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

The L&L Drive Inn field at Aloha Stadium? 😆 Ohhhh the imagery and the irony…

If they’re gonna go that route, they should also include the best plate from L&L in the title.

Please make that: “The L&L Drive Inn Seafood Combo with BBQ Chicken Field at Aloha Stadium.” 😆

  46. madeinhawaii July 1, 2011 7:55 am

Okay… so if the HILTON or some other major hotel chain besides the Sheraton wins this bid for the field naming rights, how will that affect the “Sheraton Hawaii Bowl” ?

    Morning all.

  47. Slugger July 1, 2011 7:56 am

    Good morning, gang!

ST ~ Aaaawwww, I have hula class on Wednesday night. I’ll have to find someone to fill me in. Wish I could be there. Give my regards to the Coach. 🙂

  49. CoolEthan July 1, 2011 8:03 am

Was listening to the Giants/ Cubs game on the radio.

Was at Comisky field in Chicago.

The SF radio guy kept referring to their booth as the “Hawaiian Airlines broadcasting booth.”

    over & over

    over & over

    over & over

No commercials, motto’s, nada, other than name branding.

Again, doesn’t want to make me fly.

I am posting this in a hurry because my buddy in Hawaii says Hawaiian Air has dropped their price for Las Vegas in September – Sept 11th HA 08 1020pm depart, arrive next day 7am. Return Tuesday September 20th HA 17, depart 155am, arrive hnl 5am. Price $449.80 all inclusive. This seems to be a GOOD PRICE for Hawaiian Airlines DIRECT. I don’t know how long this will last…. Check it out!!

  61. Midnight July 1, 2011 9:43 am

Of course when checking Hawaiian Airlines, you would your own travel dates. I only mention the dates in #61, because that is his travel dates…..

  62. al July 1, 2011 9:44 am

poutasi has been high on our list for a long time.

after attending a few camps he is even higher on everyone’s list.

his offer has been out there quite some time.

he would be a great get.

Al — you’re right. Only 7 Tsai-kos could physically fit at a 10-person table and we’ll still block the aisle in there. Then, if ordering is up to you, there would be a lot of seafood stuff… 😐

  64. A-House July 1, 2011 9:48 am

Has not Poutasi already made a verbal commitment to play on the mainland?

If so, is UH still pursuing?

I cannot be there for this chat. Out of the office exactly at 7pm and it takes me about 15 minutes to arrive at Manoa.

Would be rude to walk in late.

Those who are critical of Coach Mack have a chance to opine IN PERSON and should participate without the “protective shield” of a keyboard.

  74. PowderPuff July 1, 2011 10:45 am

Before I fall further behind in my reading…wanted to send out kudos and congrats to Candace Fujishima for her hiring. Hopefully they’ll pick up Steven Jackson too. They both are such great professionals to work with, having recently worked with them and K5 on “Hot Hawaiian Nights” down here in Waikiki.

And thanks for setting up the Q&A with Coach Mack next Wednesday, ST. I have a board meeting that night – no, not the NEW board, but another. Talk about the NEW board…last week’s scholarship dinner for the Football Team was awesome! They raised $21K on the silent auction.

  75. A-House July 1, 2011 10:53 am

    al:

    received email, but no attachment!

  109. al July 1, 2011 1:09 pm

    btw…curt you there?

    100!

  110. Stephen Tsai July 1, 2011 1:10 pm

And those love scenes between Doris Day and Rock Hudson were so real …

  111. al July 1, 2011 1:11 pm

i just went through that with the boss’ car.

i swear these cars have a timing device that shuts down one thing after another soon after the warranty expires.

even the mechanic has his suspicions.

one control module replacement = 620 bucks!

  112. al July 1, 2011 1:13 pm

111…bbbuuuuuwwwahhh. there’s goes my mid-day caffeine all over the laptop.

i was just thinking about those two together in all those movies. i wonder what doris felt after she found out about rock’s orientation.

  113. kawika49 July 1, 2011 1:22 pm

#113 she should have known when his orientation was flacid during the scenes.

    iwwthm

Pls reconsider about asking Coach Mack about reducing his compensation on Wednesday. I don’t think this is the proper venue to do this. Coach Mack is kind enough to meet with us face-to-face and is doing ST and the Tsaikos a big favor. With that in mind, why would we go out of way to put him on the spot and possibly embarrass him, ST, and the other Tsaikos? Thanks for your consideration.

  119. mcb July 1, 2011 2:01 pm

#119 = because iwwthm never received positive attention as a child.

That must have been “edgy”. 😆 😆 😆

  121. Kevin July 1, 2011 2:11 pm

Not familiar with Doris Day though.

I do enjoy Morris Day and The Time…

  122. Kevin July 1, 2011 2:19 pm

RE: Open questions regarding asking Coach Mack about a salary reduction.

Let me try on the “internet wannabe watchdog hat” for this one.

(deep breath)…. C’mon people, can’t you see? The insiduous way in which the penny pinchers poised at Hawaii Hall sitting in their lofty and imaginary ivory towers are scheming to pull every penny from the tax-paying public deservers to have some light shed on it.

The kool-aiders and anti-prometheus pundits carrying the “yes-man” banner need to reach out and grab an olive branch that I am offering here to you today.

Ok, I’m going to stop right there as I started to develop a growth on my backside.

Wow, it’s pretty easy to ramble on like that sitting behind a computer.

BTW, for those that probably won’t get the sarcasm I was suggesting, well, I was being sarcastic. Short and sweet, yeah I don’t think IWWTHM should ask Coach Mack this question at that time, but his choice is his own.

“Being in politics is like being a football coach. You have to be smart enough to understand the game, and dumb enough to think it’s important.”

    –Eugene J. McCarthy

What if you THINK you are smart enough to understand politics and dumb enough to think you can convince people to believe your own ideals over theirs???

Whoops, I guess I just realized I fall into that category.

At least I can admit it tho.

  124. gigi-hawaii July 1, 2011 2:36 pm

    Memories

    Eugene McCarthy.

I worked on his presidential campaign in Los Angeles in 1968.

    He didn’t win the nomination.

  125. gigi-hawaii July 1, 2011 2:41 pm

For the longest time, my idol was Rock Hudson.

Loved his romantic comedies with Doris Day.

  126. gigi-hawaii July 1, 2011 2:43 pm

As far as Mack’s salary is concerned, leave it alone.

I don’t think that chat is the time to bring it up.

Unless, of course, he brings it up himself.

  127. SteveM July 1, 2011 2:54 pm

    Rock and Doris.

    I remember Bogie and Bacall… 🙂

  129. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 1, 2011 3:06 pm

    Curt,

ST said it would be the time to ask questions about contracts or recruits in person. If he didn’t think it was appropriate I don’t think he would have suggested it. The last thing anyone (especially ST) would be to embarrass Mack.

The worst that could happen would be a Jim Calhoun moment which would make things electric. lol jk.

    Read post #7.

I don’t think I even looked at it since the softball season.

Got this notification yesterday – wonder if UH will ever have their own radio channel some day?

Great way to spread da word but don’t I’ll be listening.

Beginning July 1, 2011, tune in to BYU Radio (Channel 143), the newest addition to the SiriusXM channel lineup.

BYU Radio offers a unique perspective on our shared world and times from the standpoint of people throughout the Northern Hemisphere who feel either deeply connected to or culturally sympathetic with the aims and values of Brigham Young University. It’s informed conversation, news that matters, topics that enlighten, ideas that educate, and plenty of Cougar Sports.

  143. al July 1, 2011 4:29 pm

There you go. From ST himself.

  146. Ralph July 1, 2011 4:38 pm

Direct TV picks up option to telecast UH vs UDub, but only in the PNW. We may get it in PPV.

If anything, it helps recruiting in the PNW.

  147. Stephen Tsai July 1, 2011 4:52 pm

The point of asking a question is to get an answer.

In news conferences, there are some who ask questions that they know won’t be answered. But they want to prove to their peers that they can ask the “tough” question. But what’s the point if it doesn’t draw more than a “no comment”?

Then there are some situations where the answers are apparent, but some just want “A Few Good Men” confessional at the end.

For instance, recruiting and contracts negotiations aren’t up for public vote. This isn’t the “Voice.” The public doesn’t get to pick the next recruit. So sometimes you have to connect the dots. If it is being pointed out that a prospect is interested in UH, and UH said it can’t discuss prospects, and it is being pointed out that UH is seeking an experienced QB for 2012, well, shouldn’t reasonable people make the connection that, yes, UH is interested in a QB prospect?

And if a head coach has absorbed a voluntary pay cut for nearly two years, don’t you think he would agree to extend the period for the pay cut? But if you’re in contract negotiations, you’re not going to make a public declaration of your stance.

People are free to ask anything they wish.

  148. BG July 1, 2011 4:59 pm

#149 ST, you nailed squarely better than any sledgehammer [[applause]]

  149. Ralph July 1, 2011 5:00 pm

Hawaiian Telcom to start up TV service, their programming includes NFL network. Tough choice, HT or Oceanic, time to sit back and see what each offers in programming especially in UH sports and what will they charge each month.

  150. gigi-hawaii July 1, 2011 5:14 pm

    Ralph,

I think it depends on whether Hwn Tel has service in your area.

They don’t have internet service where I live, so I am wondering if that will affect TV broadcasts in my area also.

  151. Da Punchbowl Kid July 1, 2011 5:15 pm

  153. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 1, 2011 5:27 pm

    #148,

Never hurts to ask a question regardless if you think it is or isn’t going to be answered. I rather someone ask a tough question and get “no comment” than not ask it because you just never know, you might get lucky. Even a blind squirrel can find a nut sometimes.

And I disagree, the point of asking questions is not always to get an answer… Sometimes the point of asking a question is to put pressure on people or to bring awareness to an issue or to ruffle feathers etc. There is much more to a question than just an answer.

  155. warriorsun July 1, 2011 6:01 pm

    154.

    agree.

lawyers ask questions for the record.

many reporters do the same. more accurately would be to solicite a response or comment.

    an answer presumes more.

it’s up to the person asking the question to dig or rephrase the question.

if you know something is stiring and mac is evasive or is circumventing, it depends on your skill to cover every base.

idk about showboating a question, that appears to be circumstantial and too limited to be a categorical statement. it sounds juvenile. geez, give more credit to people who sincerely ask bonafide questions. this isnt high school. or is it?

  156. Stephen Tsai July 1, 2011 6:09 pm

Mack’s a grown man and you can ask him anything during the forum.

    There aren’t any limits.

But I think that when someone is testing out questions here, he’s showboating.

    Like I said, just ask.

I’ll put down IWWTHM and warriorsun on the guest list.

  161. Stephen Tsai July 1, 2011 6:16 pm

Anyway, I think this is a great opportunity for UH fans to fire away.

It’s not often a Division I football coach is willing to give up an evening to meet with fans. For free. Don’t think Pat Hill or Chris Petersen are doing that.

So e-mail or text me, and I’ll put you on the list for Wednesday.

You can even use your online name if you wish to remain anonymous.

    One please, Blog Host.

  165. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc July 1, 2011 6:19 pm

Stephen: Sorry for taking so long to get answer your #12

    Wassup Doc:

Is that from yesterday’s Stadium Authority meeting</blockquote in response to my #11 post. Had to be on the road again at 6:30 am and just got back to my computator about half an hour ago.

Brief answer: Not directly – that is, nothing on the Agenda. However, according to informed sources in attendance at the meeting and others at the Capitol, intensive discussions are being held between elected officials and private sector Big Muckamuckas about a wide variety of related issues concerning Aloha Stadium. I am trying to turn into a Fly On The Wall so that I can eavesdrip on these talk-talks.

However, it was interesting to see Bruce Coppa, head of DAGS which oversees the Stadium on behalf of Da Gov, squirming in his seat when Ken Marcus asked him for an explanation.

FYI: I’ve run into Ken Marcus at The Stan and The Les. He’s a very, very good friend of UH.

  166. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc July 1, 2011 6:20 pm

Sorry – forgot to close off the blockquote.

  167. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 1, 2011 6:23 pm

Or someone is testing out a question here because the numerous bloggers here contribute discussion and ideas that could lead to better things worth asking the Coach.

  168. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 1, 2011 6:24 pm

    Mahalo!

  169. Stephen Tsai July 1, 2011 6:31 pm

    Tom Mui:

I remember a radio host asked a coach if he was recruiting a certain quarterback.

Now coaches aren’t allowed to comment on any prospect who hasn’t signed either a letter of intent or scholarship agreement. So the coach said he can’t comment.

But that’s a fact in evidence. The host already knew about the quarterback situation because it was reported. Have to alter the question.

  170. A-House July 1, 2011 6:32 pm

Doris Day, sexy???? If you said Raquel Welch or Jane Mansfield or Liz Taylor, now, that’s sexy!

Doris Day is in the Sally Field or McGurie Sisters or Piper Laurie category.

  171. Stephen Tsai July 1, 2011 6:33 pm

    IWWTHM:

    Show up, and fire away.

It will be worth your while.

And if this works out, we’ll bring in other coaches.

  172. Stephen Tsai July 1, 2011 6:34 pm

By the way, I thought Sandra Dee had a Doris Day-like image. Then I saw Summer Place (or something like that) on an oldies channel a few weeks ago.

    Roz was wrong.

  173. A-House July 1, 2011 6:35 pm

I was venting. You guys were collateral damage.

But I’ve been out of line.

I apologize to everyone, especially to IWWTHM and warriorsun. They’re both great contributors.

  179. A-House July 1, 2011 6:45 pm

If UH coaching staff is looking for an “experienced QB” to start the 2012 season, what’s wrong with having the “projected” starter get more reps, a lot more reps, in games (hate to say this, but #2 behind Moniz? I like Shane Austin.

If you bring in Tate, then the “3 amigo” QBs will be history by 2014. That will leave Alo, if he still comes in January 2012, as the “untested” QB to start 2014.

Despite how good Forcier is, he was beaten out of the starting job by a true freshman in 2011.

  180. gigi-hawaii July 1, 2011 6:46 pm

RSVP’d to Stephen for Wednesday. DrDoc will be at another event just off campus that evening which I’d also planned to attend.

  192. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc July 1, 2011 7:19 pm

Coppa was squirming about the resignations.

Re the naming rights – I have some concerns about the legality of them. I certainly think they’re worthwhile, but the state does not own the land and there are some serious restrictions as to what can & cannot be done on the property regarding $$$.

I was told a decade ago by the AG’s office during the Cayetano Administration and re-confirmed it about four years ago during the Lingle Admininstration that there are HUGE restrictions, if not overt bans, on commerical activities on the entire facility, but in particular the Stadium itself because of the restrictions put on the property back in 1968 when the lease was negotiated between the Navy and the State of Hawai`i.

These restrictions/bans are one of the reasons that Aloha Stadium supporters have had to rely on state funding for upgrades & repairs.

let me try to understand the existing political-class on beretania street.

we should be concerned about naming rights bc of “serious restrictions” placed on the state by the navy contained in the ’68 land disposition.

but abercrombie has no reserservations or serious concerns to move the stadium originally intended for a site for uh football and develop the razed venue for non recreational purposes?

    sounds like shibai.

  210. sports for fun July 1, 2011 9:35 pm

I hope the Big West Conference has a new logo in the works when UH joins in 2012, just like the MWC and the WCC.

  211. tommui July 1, 2011 10:09 pm

ST re: #168 was not a criticism of you.

Just a comment that if a trial attorney does not know an answer to a question, he does not ask it.

In this particular instance, you knew that the guy contacted or had a feeler out to the UH because the guy said he was “interested”. He also knew that he had to contact the UH people to let them know he was “interested” and was “shopping around”.

  212. Curt July 1, 2011 10:23 pm

Interesing discussion on questions we can pose to Coach Mack. Of course, reporters will always take the position that any question is appropriate. A few days ago, I witnessed a reporter asking presidential candidate Michelle Bachman (sp?) if she was a flake? She handled the question but I thought it was pretty insulting. We can ask questions like “Have you ever punched your spouse?” Or how about “Have you ever had sex with someone other than your spouse?” Or as Gigi asked, “What’s your salary?” Yes. You can ask any of these questions. I just prefer not to put our coach on the spot. Now if I was a reporter, I would probably ask Coach Mack, “If you could punch any coach and get away with it, who would that coach be?” I’m just kidding…really. Actually, that might be a good question to ask da coach.

  213. warriorsun July 1, 2011 11:10 pm

asking a question of a witness in court during cross examination is totally different than asking a coach a question during an interview. on the otherhand, witness a lawyer ask questions during a deposition for pre-trial discovery. no perry mason brilliance there. but there is purpose in the foundation and line of questioning.

quite frankly, i never ask a coach a question i know he wont answer or answers with a canned response. dick tomey is classic and predictable. mac will try to respond honestly but can drift-off unless you reel him in. the key here at manoa is to ask secondary questions that give you insight. open some doors and let your reasoning follow.

    example–(skating around tate forcier).

“Coach MAC, the 2012 schedule is brutal. you open with usc at LA and follow-up in provo to face the cougars. you play afa, csu, sdsu and fsu on the road too. how important is it for you to have solid, quality depth at QB?”

“can you name a QB starter for 2012 right now?”

“if the answer is no, would you say it’s open for competition?”

    “thanks coach”.

  216. Lopaka43 July 1, 2011 11:46 pm

    Aloha, Tsaiko Ohana,

Re #193 and #210, CWDoc knows her stuff

The land was turned over to the State with specific restrictions on how it could be used. Now the land is very valuable for potential redevelopment with residences and commercial uses because it is within walking distance of one of the transit system stations.

It was thought that there could be a win-win situation with the new transit-oriented development helping to pay for stadium repairs and improvements.

However, when the City looked at the potential for such development, the research showed, as CWDoc said, there would have to be a renegotiation of the land transfer terms before any development could occur. Probably the State agreed to the restrictions because the transfer was a lot easier to do if it was not going to be to acquire land for a profit making activity. (That is why they did the same thing out at Kalaeloa.)

we should be concerned about naming rights bc of “serious restrictions” placed on the state by the navy contained in the ’68 land disposition.

but abercrombie has no reserservations or serious concerns to move the stadium originally intended for a site for uh football and develop the razed venue for non recreational purposes?

    sounds like shibai.

Here are the steps that the Lingle Administration tried to execute and now the Abercrombie Administration must take in order to carry out his plans

    1. Create a land exchange between the Department of Land & Natural Resources & the Navy for an equivalent piece of state-owned property. The Navy wants land to use for recreational purposes close to the water – size, not $$$$, matters.

    2. While the exchange is being finalized, the Congressional Delegation will work to remove all restrictions on the land since they exist independent of ownership.

    3. Meanwhile, the State Legislature will be working on its own land use designations and permitted actions.

    4. Once these first three steps are finalized, then the State of Hawai`i’s Department of Accounting & General Services OR the University of Hawai`i OR the Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism OR the Department of Land & Natural Resources will initiate its long-term planning process.

In other words, once the rules of the game are changed, then the Head Coach at that time can do what s/he wants with the property.

Abercrombie has made it very, very clear that he wants the Aloha Stadium property to be used to address affordable housing needs, and to a lesser extent, some permanent economic development as well – not just construction jobs.

As for the Stadium itself – the actual physical facility – that will be removed from the site sometime during the next four to eight years. Where – or if – it will be rebuilt is not on this Governor’s agenda. He has other priorities of which getting the economy stabilized is Number Two. Number One is public education. Number Three is renewable energy. Number Four is expanding the supply of workforce/affordable housing.

Actually all of these four are tied for First Place.

There are those of us who are addressing these four issues by keeping Aloha Stadium right where it is and replacing it in about 20 years or so AND utilizing the 125 acres of parking in more effective and exonomically-diverse ways.

Unfortunately, no one is paying much attention to this fifth option/alternative because of the compelling need to address the four issues on Abercrombie’s agenda.

    Any questions or comments?

  218. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc July 2, 2011 12:05 am

    Mahalo Lopaka43 for your comments.

  219. Slugger July 2, 2011 12:46 am

    Mahalo, W-Doc & Lopaka43, for the information.

I think the stadium should remain where it is, centrally located, near a transportation node, with access by all of the current highways.

    Good night, gang!

  220. Lopaka43 July 2, 2011 12:50 am

    CWDoc,

Thanks for the summary of steps needed to develop the Aloha Stadium site.

The idea of the State somehow finding an equivalent site to give the Navy seems a non-starter.

And the idea that the Stadium should be located elsewhere makes no sense to me.

Locating a similar size facility at UH would be a design nightmare (there really is no place for it to go in the Quarry without wiping out facilities that are already heavily used) and it would create the mother of all traffic jams on game day

Locating the Stadium in Ewa, perhaps at UH West Oahu, would be physically possible but would also cause massive traffic jams on H-1 and Farrington.

The reality is that Aloha Stadium is located almost exactly at the population center of the island and is much better served by major roadways than all the alternative sites. And when the train starts running in 2019, a huge segment of the fans will be able to arrive without automobiles from both the Ewa and Diamond Head directions.

I agree with you that the Stadium should be kept at the current site, and that there should be a renegotiation of the land transfer to allow affordable housing and jobs development above portions of the parking lot closest to the transit station.

  221. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc July 2, 2011 1:10 am

    Lopaka43 –

Actually the land to exchange has already been identified. Most of the land surrounding the other two lochs that that are north & west of Pearl Harbor itself are owned by the state. There is a strong desire to keep these lands free from further development by both the state and the federal governments. However, that would be easier to control if the lands were owned by the feds.

I have to go to bed now – DrDoc and I are going to be in a YouTube video production later on today. However, if there’s any interest in discussing other options, let’s get together at an evening CC to talk about this. Or maybe a practice T-Gate.

One last little tidbit of speculation: There have been very preliminary discussions with a major private landowner about removing all those two/three/four story walkups and then building a new Stadium and replacement multi-family housing & commercial high-rises somewhere in the area makai of the freeway between Punchbowl and UH.

  229. CoolEthan July 2, 2011 4:32 am

Ring in Independence Day weekend and beyond with carniverous habits.

Some yahoo guy with the NY times writing-

“FOOD is responsible for 10 to 30 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. By many estimates, cooking represents more of a meal’s carbon footprint than transport. For certain vegetables, it accounts for more emissions than agriculture, transport and disposal combined.

Fourth of July, the national celebration of combustion, presents an opportunity for atonement.

I’m not advising you to forsake grilling this holiday and join the ranks of raw-foodists. Nor do I believe that we can reverse climate change by eating burgers rare instead of well done. But a little creative thinking can reduce this year’s Fourth of July carbon emissions without gustatory sacrifice. And maybe that awareness will carry into other days and other parts of our lives.”

CoolEthan writes -“Ya right pal. If your party phone doesn’t ring, it’s me.”

doc, thanks for ur contribution. although u attempt to provide facts u only provide stuff that is on the political class menu.

i dont place much stock in what lingle started. it’s reversible. nothing has been inked. she didnt know the difference between a FG and a 3-point shot on the hardwood. ur gov knows this, but apparently uses it as a ruse to further his own personal ambitions. clearly a political turnover opportunity he can exploit. he already has flip-flopped on a number of venue issues–including hawaii’s incarcerated. guess he forgot radcliff is in the prison housing business?

as far as abercrummies priorities are concerned–he is a one term governor that mixes personal agenda with high powered inside-the-beltway tactics. he spent alot of time on the armed services committee on the hill doling out appropriations to the pentagon, so his chits are redeemable with the navy fleet.

the guy talks through both sides of his mouth. too many years of smokin and not swallowing.

look, most agree with lopaka. keep it simple and keep it in halawa.

the existing transportation infrastructure is in place and the venue is at the crossroads for west, east, south and windward oahu. what this gov wants is an excuse to create juice for his flock of contributors…..at the expense and future of uh football. rem, this is the same clown who in the 60’s wanted to eliminate a student fee of $10 that was applied towards football and athletics. neil has become exactly the person he ranted against as a grad student–a fast talking hit n run artist.

    CSB . . .

September is usually a really nice month — weatherwise. Seats will probably be in the sun. PNW sun can be kind of brutal like the sun in Hawai’i. Major problem will be you will not feel as hot because of the cool breeze coming off the water. But the burn will set in!

Personally, I would recommend a good sunscreen. Better safe than sorry. Besides, being uncomfortable at the UNLV game would not be pleasant.

  255. wafan July 2, 2011 8:27 am

no new news with Tigi Hill, Ben Mamea and Ellis Henderson.

it was known that the two kahuku players were high probability academic non-qualifiers and much touted-hederson was injured and would need a lengthy rehab.

however, the point joyous warrior fans should understand from this belated information is recruiting is never completed until summer camp roll-call. many times coaches are aware but count the LOI to inflate the haul. nothing new. it’s been done before, not only by mac, but JJ as well. that’s the reason they keep recruiting, much to the bewilderment of many beancounters who become frustrated when numbers dont mash with available scholies. it’s all part of the football cultural shared by coaches and reporters to keep business running and fans interested.

to that end, it’s never over until camp begins. that goes for tate too. notwithstanding what they say.

In this awesome pattern of things you’ll secure an A+ just for effort. Exactly where you misplaced me ended up being on all the specifics. As as the maxim goes, details make or break the argument.. And it could not be more correct here. Having said that, let me tell you precisely what did work. The article (parts of it) is definitely very engaging and this is possibly why I am making the effort in order to opine. I do not really make it a regular habit of doing that. Secondly, even though I can easily notice the leaps in reason you make, I am not sure of just how you seem to unite your details that produce your conclusion. For right now I shall subscribe to your point however trust in the foreseeable future you link the dots better.———— http://www.hogan.ws – Hogan Scarpe,Scarpe Hogan.
