Chasing the dream

Yesterday’s walk-on tryouts had several elements — drizzle, drama (it was the start of a three-day weekend so no key-holder to Ching could be found) and eclectic characters.

But about 40 football players were able to show their talents, grit and, sometimes, girth in a tryout that should earn a few a spot on the Warriors’ spring roster. Invitations are expected to be formally extended on Tuesday.

lopez

There were what-the-heck expressions when Justin Lopez crossed the finish line of the 40-yard dash in a surprising 4.5 seconds. It was a good time considering the turf was slippery and there was a significant head wind.

Lopez then jogged back and readied himself for his second try.

“Stop!” said UH assistant coach Phil Rauscher, who coordinated the tryouts. “Don’t you want to rest a little?”

Lopez didn’t.

He finished his second sprint in 4.6 seconds.

Lopez is a 2009 Waialua High graduate who recently attended Leeward Community College. He is 5 feet 9 and 195 pounds, and aspires to play slotback.

big

The odds would appear to be against Kendrick Simmons, a recent Leeward Community College graduate.

He hasn’t played football in years.

His weight is mauka of 320 pounds.

He is 34 years old.

But Simmons, who has a background in television production, embraced the challenge of trying to make the Warriors as an offensive lineman. Several Warriors cheered as Simmons went through the 40-yard dash and L-test.

malcolm

The courting began on the basketball court.

Malcolm Okeke had been working out daily in Gym II with the hope of trying out for the basketball Warriors. Bystanders noted that Okeke’s size (6-3), footwork and quickness would be transferrable skills to football. He was encouraged to participate in yesterday’s tryout.

Okeke, who was born in Nigeria, did well in the speed drills despite wearing gym shoes instead of cleats.

“I never expected any of this,” Okeke said. “I’ve never done anything like this.”

Running back Pareese Joas said he has trained regularly since graduating from Liberty High (Frisco, Texas) in 2010.

He carries a football wherever he goes.

“I’ve been training for this,” Joas said. “But, really, I’ve been training my whole life for football.”

Joas said he enrolled at UH because “of the pro-style offense and the coaching staff.”

He enrolled in January, then pestered the coaches for a chance to audition.

“They finally told me the forms were in, so I picked them up,” Joas said.

Joas was credited with a 4.4 in his first 40-yard sprint. One of the timers clocked Joas as under 4.4 seconds. His second attempt also was under 4.5 seconds.

Great stories!! Other than good recruits, we need great walk ons! They are more motivated and can push our recruits to make them better. Hopefully, some of these guys will become stars on the Warriors football team!! Imagine if we can get a Chad Owens, and/or Ashley Lelie out of this group!!

  11. 3-Prong February 16, 2013 10:10 am

  12. Stephen Tsai February 16, 2013 10:13 am

Apparently the recruits are very competitive.

One of the recruiting stops is Dave & Busters.

One of the receiver recruits beat Ashley Lelie in pop-a-shot. It was considered to be the highlight of his trip.

    Bon Voyage, hawnstln !!!

Our Lo-Cal Tsai-ko uber-cruiser is probably having buffet lunch aboard the Holland Zaandam in San Diego at this moment. This cruise is a 14-night round trip swinging through Hawaii.

The ship will be in Nawiliwili on the 23rd (where he can visit his son) and Honolulu on the 24th. He will be visiting family on his one day Honolulu so will be unable to attend a Cruiser Call I proposed. A Sunday lunch Cruiser Call would be a first for us. 🙂

He will be in Hilo on the 21st and Lahaina on the 22nd.

Coolen has thrown in Keiki against some very good teams. It should pay off later. I really like how she can also swing the bat.

Early on coach has said that Nakao brings defense while Zamora has the offense. I guess he felt that he needed more offense. Still good competition at that spot.

  61. Derek February 16, 2013 3:19 pm

Read that Zamora was playing third base so I am assuming she replaced Alyssa Villapando.

  62. Kevin February 16, 2013 3:27 pm

Box score shows freshman Alyssa Villalpando remained at 3rd for the whole game. I have NEVER seen Zamora take “reps” at 3rd base during fall or spring practices. She has been a mainstay in the competition for 2nd.

Coolen is one of those coaches that one can never correctly assume what he is thinking 100% of the time. However, I would like to assume that this is the main reason Parnaby didnt see action at all against UCLA.

Its good that Carlos and Kesterson got a taste of a heavy hitting team like the Bruins this early on. Hopefully Carlos and Kesterson (to a lesser extent since that was her only game played so far) showed Coolen something.

The month of March is a HEAVY schedule filled with a lot of games at home and a few more good solid teams.

It will continue to be a balancing act of testing his freshmen while getting our primary ace Parnaby in to win the games we need to.

Very good win today. Saw some photos and the stands were packed!

Since its a 3 day weekend and lots of great D1 softball teams out there, lots of prospects tend to visit the games. Lots of verbals to schools in attendance and of course those still making decisions.

There is film on him on YouTube from 2010. It is limited but he does have some carries. He was a backup to #1…that guy was GOOD. Looks very undersized but shifty and quick, probably why he didn’t have a lot of offers out of HS. He fits the bill of the undersized athletic overachievers ala Chad Owens….

… finally, some ink for the Wahine hoopsters …

UH women’s basketball team beats Pacific for share of Big West lead

    By Star-Advertiser staff

    POSTED: 09:24 p.m. HST, Feb 16, 2013

Ashleigh Karaitiana hit the game-winning 3-pointer with 14 seconds left in overtime and the Hawaii women’s basketball team moved into a tie with Pacific for the Big West Conference lead with a thrilling 74-71 defeat of the Tigers tonight at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Shawna Kuehu scored the first seven points of the extra period for the Rainbow Wahine (13-11, 9-4 Big West). UOP’s Erica McKenzie was off the mark to tie the game again after Karaitiana’s big shot from the corner.

Kuehu had 17 points and eight rebounds and Kamilah Martin added 16 points and 12 boards. Martin had a good look at a game-winning basket at the end of regulation, but was off the mark.

UH held a one-point halftime lead and extended the gap to five early in the second half, but the Tigers came back to knot it up at the end of regulation. Gena Johnson had 22 points to lead UOP (19-6, 9-4), which was denied a program-record tying 20th win.

Monica DeAngelis hit a corner 3-pointer for a 64-61 lead with 1:05 left. UOP Johnson came back with drives to tie it up.

UH overcame poor free-throw shooting (22-for-40, 55 percent).

Pacific jumped out to an 8-0 lead to open the game with some ball pressure, but UH recovered in fine style and finished with 16 turnovers, even with UOP. The Wahine committed 27 giveaways in the Tigers’ 71-61 win in Stockton, Calif., last month.

Marissa Wimbley hit a 3-pointer to make it 27-25 UOP with three minutes left in the first half.

Kuehu put UH ahead 29-27 on a nifty spin move and UH took a 30-29 lead at the break.
