This past football season, the Rainbow Warriors visited the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington D.C.

RE Super Bowl…
Might be the first time in a very long time the two pre-season favorites actually meet in the SB. Also, it’s been a long time since both #1 seeds are meeting in the SB.

Ekahi! Tying in the accomplishments of MLK and some of the football events of recent days, I submit the following:
I do take reflection that probably the world’s greatest trash talker, Ali, became a man whose humanitarian efforts were second to none. My point being, is that we are all capable of evolving, and what we do as young men do not define us permanently. MLK himself had huge personal flaws and shortcomings, but despite that, he was able to change this history of the US, and became an inflection point for the treatment of all citizens.
Point being, we all struggle and fall a little short, but we can still be positive agents of change.
On a real football point, I hope this super bowl berth will finally give Pete Carroll the respect he deserves as being recognized as a top tier coach. His record speaks volumes, with several national championship games, a incredible run over 6 seasons at SC, where his record was 67-7, and now a super bowl berth. Charlie Weiss, I hope you are taking some notes….
Can anyone explain why MLK Day and Black History Month aren’t in the same month? It makes perfect sense to have them both in January.
Seems pretty cheapass to put Black History Month in February (the shortest month of the year).

4 FUHA…part of the reason is the chronology on how Black History Month was developed. It was in formation much before the MLK holiday. See below:
The story of Black History Month begins in 1915, half a century after the Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery in the United States. That September, the Harvard-trained historian Carter G. Woodson and the prominent minister Jesse E. Moorland founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), an organization dedicated to researching and promoting achievements by black Americans and other peoples of African descent. Known today as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), the group sponsored a national Negro History week in 1926, choosing the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. The event inspired schools and communities nationwide to organize local celebrations, establish history clubs and host performances and lectures.
In the decades the followed, mayors of cities across the country began issuing yearly proclamations recognizing Negro History Week. By the late 1960s, thanks in part to the Civil Rights Movement and a growing awareness of black identity, Negro History Week had evolved into Black History Month on many college campuses. President Gerald R. Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976.
Also, there is a lot more to Black History than MLK Jr.

Also, going back to Saturday… gotta give props to the MBB fans as they had a solid attendance vs UCR. Surprising, considering the team was coming off 2 straight losses. Fans that showed up were treated to an impressive 100pt showing by the team.
Word is finally spreading that this team is the best in over a decade (easily the most athletic team top-bottom in multiple decades), and play a fan friendly style.

Gotta admit that he does have The hawks playing tough physical football these days though.
15…3 Prong…We all got some warts, some of us, larger and uglier than others. That said, when you enter the company that only 2 other men occupy, (Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer, only two coaches to coach in a national championship and super bowl) it does silence some of the quarters that say that Pete Carroll is overrated as a coach (see: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/61647-pete-carroll-is-just-a-bit-overrated). Not saying he is good candidate as scout master, but he does have bonafides.

Fun fact, that might have changed Duane’s future. Mr. Akina basically begged Mack Brown to give Johnny Football a scholarship, however after much asking and prodding, Coach Brown passed on giving him a scholly to UT. Hmmmn, what happens in Manziel goes to UT????
Good news for Duane Akina, if true. Cal HC Sonny Dykes reassigned his DC, Andy Buh to a position coach after this past season. Buh, has a 3-yr contract paying him $500,000 a year. Would be a pay raise for Akina, but factoring in the cost of living in the Bay Area, maybe not.
Do we have any early predictions for the Super Bowl? Any of our football Yodas (e.g FUHA, Jezzy, etc….) care to give us their preliminary thoughts?
My own instincts say you bet strength v. strength…Thus, Peyton v. Seattle Secondary. Peyton is having, number wise, an incredible year, yet his record says, and vegas supports this, is that he, more times than not, falls in the big game.
Seattle has a tremendous secondary. The leagues top corner, a top five free safety, a strong safety that looks much more like a OLB, who was straight stoning people this past Sunday. And the rest of the hawks D are really quick.
My game decider is the beast, he is gashing folks, and if he can establish some form of running game, it will keep Peyton off the field. My thoughts my change in the coming weeks, but I am taking the hawks by 5.

I think Marshawn Lynch will be the deciding factor in the game. If Seattle’s Oline controls the action, Seattle can smash the clock and not give Peyton much TOP. Manning is too good to be shut down and will eventually score some points, so limiting the number of possessions in the game will be Seattle’s best chance, and they are built to do that.
I guess I’m leaning Seattle at this point, but it’s a long time until I place any bets so there’s time to make changes.

As we both mentioned Lynch, seems to be a deciding factor, but also I think, the Broncos have an average, average+ defensive backfield, however its sort of negated as Seahawks have a similar rated pass offense. Although, they are effective in key situations, so maybe a little push for Seattle….But, yes, lets see what the injury report looks like 72 prior to game time.
24 and 27..I actually was secretly wanting Duane to go to UCLA. He has a close relationship with Mora, both played at UDub, Jeff U, and it has, despite all the pub of UT as DBU, if I am not mistaken, since the 80s, UCLA has more DBs in the NFL (off the top of my head, Kenny Easley, Don Rogers, Eric Turner, Carnell Lake, Lupe Sanchez, James Washington, Rahim Moore, Ricky Manning…etc.

boya_sr passed away early this morning. He was a loyal UH fan and supporter. Some of my favorite childhood memories were going to Aloha Stadium and tailgating with friends, many of them Fort Shafter DoD co-workers. More recently after I moved him to California to be closer to me, I learned he loved Kui Lee music (“Lahainaluna”, “I’ll Remember You”). He was an older dad, since I’m still in my early 30’s (him in late 70’s), but I got to learn about the “Old Hawaii” days. Special shout out to the Lahainaluna Class of 1955 and those who lived in the plantation camps nearby. There are still so much I want to know about the history. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
35–Much support and aloha to your family. My mom’s side and ohana, grew up in plantations, not Maui, but Honomu, and I know it is something, all my uncles, aunts, and tutus cherish.

tee’d it up and let her rip…dang if that shot went to the right…over the fence…hit the eave of the building and proceeded to bounce up and down while all the onlookers went scattering while covering their heads….was a stunning tee shot!

Well, ST cleared up the 100m time for Darrian Josey as being 10.7. That is a BIG difference from the hudl vitals which listed it at 9.85 which I posted yesterday. That would have been a freaking fast time if true.
Funny, on the differences between this blog and scout blog (which I normally just read as too many posters just wanting to argue). I post the time yesterday and not one response and dannyp does something similar on the scout blog which elicited almost 30 replies. I am guessing a younger demographic more concerned with stats and recruiting.
I guess as we get older, we’re more concerned with life (other than football) , philosophy, character, etc. I can relate to that as I was all consumed with sports when I was much younger.

I have family friends that used to live on or near the plantation camps behind the old Pioneer Mill Company in Lahaina. Some that lived in the Pu‘ukoli‘i camps, too. You can probably find information about plantation life by a accessing university archives, but its never the same hearing it straight from the mouths of people that lived it. It’s sad to hear about the older generation passing away. Wish I spent more time, in my youth, listening to the older generation as they share they personal stories.
They say defenses win championships, but I’m going even money on Denver. Think it will be a beat down of epic proportions.
#45 That is so true man [pun intended]. As we get older, we become more aware of our mortality and circumspect regarding our obligations and responsibilities toward our family and others. I guess that’s why they call it growing up.
#43 – Jm2375: He worked for the 8th Army as a civilian, so I guess so. He joined the army and trained at Fort Ord, out of high school. I actually found a year book for the service.
#47 – Thanks Shoko. I found some of the archives from UH (oral history). My dad was part of the Maru-yama camp more in the hills above the Pu‘ukoli‘i camp. One day, I will hike to this place. I remember my dad pointing to some area from the Lahainaluna campus, but apparently in those days, I didn’t think too much of it. Times change, and I get that Old Man feeling and I want to learn more about my past.
I think a point made earlier this week, that perhaps why we so cherish UH football and college sports in general, is not only the representation of our state, but also highlights some of the more virtuous elements of sports.
That said, at least for me, I taken no umbrage with the mercenary aspects of professional sports. At the end of the day, they are merely a form of entertainment–period. We don’t ask whether a TV director or music composer is haughty and boorish–rather we accept that as idiosyncratic traits of artistic types. If a person is autocratic and does the accept thought of linear decision making, ala Jack Welch, we view it as an effective business leader, but probably not the best husband.
My posit is that to a certain degree, professional athletes and their coaches, develop entirely different skill sets to make themselves and their teams succeed. By way of example, Bill Belichick, who most consider one of the top 2-3 coaches in the NFL, is also known as the most petty, pedantic, and vindictive coach in the league. Not to belabor my point, but we should neither look up and lionize these folks, nor place them under such critical judgement–they are just producers of entertainment– a form of entertainment, I greatly love, but nothing more.

Well on this Martin Luther King day it’s good to remember that “character” is important. Professional athletes earn a place on society where they are provided an amount of income and notoriety that exceeds what most could ever dream of.
But they earned their way there and the opportunity is open to anyone. Most can’t even come close to making it. So I respect their accomplishments and their capacities.
But a dick is a dick. The fact that you are an amazing athlete doesn’t mean that you are not also a dick.
boya_jr, I believe you said you’re in your thirties but don’t wait too long to research your genealogy as people that can help you may pass away. Before you know it, you will be tracing your Maruyama clan to Japan which I believe is in the central part. You would have to trace the prefecture, district, and city. If you can do that and if you’re the eldest of the family name, you can get your koseki records or family history from somewhere in the area.
boya_jr, my cousin who lives in California and was a publisher for those Chevron garden books for Standard Oil had an interest in writing a book on plantation life and being originally from the North Shore, he did some research on the plantation life in Waialua. I believe he got some material from the area library. It’s very interesting because this is where all the imigration started with plantation life and how the different ethnic groups had sort of a pecking order. It makes you aware of how many of our perceptions were formed. Even to this day, with the continued immigration of the different groups like the Koreans, Vietnamese, Micronesians, Samoans and how their culture starts to evolve.
Truman: thanks for the advice. During the funeral, I’ll ask my older relatives about what has been researched, and figure out what I can do.
This blog is my lifeline to my Hawaii roots, despite the UH sports focus.
