Warriors get commits from corner, receiver

Damario Mclean of Elk Grove High in Sacramento and Ralph Taufa‘asau of Samoana High in American Samoa told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser they will sign letters of intent on Feb. 1, the first day 2017 recruits may put their commitments in writing.

“I love Hawaii,” Mclean said. “It’s nice and beautiful. I grew up in Sacramento, and there are a lot of Bay Area guys out there. I should fit in there.”

Mclean, who is 6 feet 2 and 185 pounds, is projected to compete at cornerback or safety. He said he ran 40 yards in a hand-timed 4.5 seconds.

Mclean also received offers from Wyoming, San Jose State, Nevada and Sacramento State.

Mclean also played soccer, basketball and baseball before focusing solely on football the past two years. He honed his football skills training at Lem Adams’ Game-Fit facility.

“I’m always there,” Mclean said.

He said he plans to study kinesiology, business or marine biology at UH.

Taufa‘asau cited his decision on his extended family in Hawaii and the growing succss of the Rainbow Warriors’ football program. “It’s a great opportunity for me,” he said.

Taufa‘asau is 6 feet 4 1/2 and 220 pounds. He has played wideout since sixth grade but is projected to compete at tight end for the Warriors.

He played for American Samoa in Saturday’s JPS Paradise Bowl at Aloha Stadium. He had four receptions, including a 3-yard scoring catch.

“He’s a humble kid, and also a silent kid,” said his father, Wallace Taufa‘asau. “I’m trying to get him not to be shy. If you ask him if he wants something to drink, he’ll say, ‘no,’ but he wants something to drink. That’s him. But he plays tough. He loves the game.”

Ralph Taufa‘asau said: “I love everything about football.”

Taufa‘asau alao excels in basketball. Two of his uncles coach for American Samoa’s national basketball team. His cousin, Kurt Taufa‘asau, played defensive tackle for the Oakland Raiders and Indianapolis Colts

The hills are alive with the sound of … football pads popping?

“It will be fun,” said former UH assistant coach Dan Morrison, who was hired as assistant coach for the Swarco Raiders of the Austrian Football League.

The Raiders are the two-time AFL defending champions. They won the Eurobowl in 2008, 2009 and 2011. They are based in Innsbruck, site of two Winter Olympics (1964, 1976) and in the middle of the Alps. Morrison will instruct quarterbacks and receivers while helping to implement a passing offense.

“Austria and Germany both know their players are a little bit more Arnold Schwarzenegger-type players,” Morrison said. “They’re big and strong. They want to learn the other aspects of this game, and that’s throwing and receiving. And they do have some pretty good athletes there, too.”

Morrison signed a six-month contract that runs from Feb. 1 through July 31. The AFL season begins in mid-March, with the championship in July. There are two levels of American football in Austria — juniors and semi-pro. The Raiders are a semi-pro team founded in 1992.

“The guys have jobs and families,” Morrison said. “They practice in the evening time. They’re playing because they really enjoy playing American football. That’s a nice situation to be in.”

Morrison coached at Punahou, Roosevelt and Iolani before joining June Jones’ initial UH staff in 1999. He joined Jones at SMU in 2008. After completing his tenure at SMU in 2014, Morrison remained in Dallas, where his daughter and grandchild live.

This is just a diversion before the real recruiting news we should hear by tomorrow, eh ST?

  5. Kanak January 15, 2017 9:40 am

Kekaula Kaniho committed to Boise. Looks like Rolo’s still got lots of work to do to keep the top level local boys home. Will Hawaii ever be able to keep these kind of players home??? Go Bows!

  6. DaveLetterMan January 15, 2017 11:41 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!
Good luck to Kaniho. Think he should’ve stayed home. Boise might be on a downswing and UH on the upswing.

  7. azwarrior22 January 15, 2017 12:16 pm

And repping the Potato state…good luck and move on.

I ususually don’t comment on recruits , but I am sad that Ka’a’awa boy Kaniho comitted to Boise. Hope he changes his mind.

  10. Derek January 15, 2017 1:38 pm

For every Kaniho, there’s an Ulu Perry, for every Tuagovailoa, there’s a Veikune and so forth. People want to go away and try something different, I say good luck. Not everybody comes back with a good experience but most do. To each his own. Those that go away are mostly forgotten, except for family and close friends. It’s like out of sight, out of mind. People are busy with their own lives back and so we tend to focus on what’s going on in Hawaii and most follow the home team and support those who play for Hawaii. That’s a fact of life. Happy to each recruit that gets a scholarship to play here or there. Rolo is correct in wanting players who want to be in and play for Hawaii. I think the Hawaii coaching staff are going a very nice job in evaluating players who can contribute to the team and improve every year.

  11. Derek January 15, 2017 1:42 pm

Letterman, I agree, I think Boise State is starting to be in a down cycle. It happened at Fresno State already. Wyoming and Colorado State on the upswing.

  12. SteveM January 15, 2017 1:46 pm

    Good news about Dan Morrison!
…maybe he can send some junior Arnold Schwarzenegger-type players our way 🙂

  13. kapakahi January 15, 2017 1:51 pm

Kaniho has been a strong BSU lean for awhile now…….from even before the OIA regular season ended……but was hoping & holding out for a Stanford offer (which may never come).

  14. burro sabio January 15, 2017 2:24 pm

Is Moamoa still the coach at Samoana?

  15. BigWave96744 January 15, 2017 2:38 pm

Boise state had a 10 win season. I dream of the day we have a 10 win season and people around the nation calls us a program on the decline.

I heard Boise St laid out a great academic schedule for Kaniho’s major, when they visited his home. It was Boise all the way, unless Stanford offered.

#15, I think we had that in 2010. 10 wins and fans were calling the program one that was on decline.

  19. Da Punchbowl Kid January 15, 2017 3:17 pm

Long before I was the Punchbowl Kid, I was a Ka’a’awa boy. Kekaula’s family are friends. I was looking forward to another familiar name to cheer for. Good luck to Kekaula.

And as one flies away, another lands on Pride Rock. Welcome to the Warriors, Ralph Taufa‘asau!!!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  20. Haleakala January 15, 2017 3:22 pm

Ralph Taufa‘asau, welcome to the Hawaii Warriors!

  21. kapakahi January 15, 2017 3:34 pm

Despite the American Samoan team losing both games this past week in the JPS Paradise Classic games, Taufa’asau was the clear standout player on offense……while Pavihi and Ta’ala were the clear standout players on defense.

  22. kapakahi January 15, 2017 3:36 pm

Taufa’asau displayed soft hands…..making effortless catches…….in both games.

Sad to see UFC legend BJ Penn take a one-sided beating tonight……as he’s taken the last few fights.

Still tough as ever……with his never-give-up fighting spirit…..and his granite chin.

But hopefully this time he’ll finally realize that it’s time for him to retire for good from active MMA competition.

  30. oldtimer808 January 15, 2017 9:36 pm

I agree with you kapakahi. BJ should retire. He looked slow and was getting pounded.

  31. AllG January 15, 2017 9:55 pm

Taufa’asau looks like he has some nice hands, after he gets a couple years in the weight room could be a nice find!

  32. DaveLetterMan January 16, 2017 5:00 am

    Morning Tsaikos!
Hopefully Adrian Klemm lands somewhere else. Good luck to him.

    Great Morning All!

Like the games themselves, there are ups and downs, ebbs and flows in recruiting.

Celebrate the ones get and no sweat the ones that no get…

    Welcome new Warriors!

  35. Bogey January 16, 2017 8:07 am

Well said Akamai! Really liking the size and speed of the recruits. More hanapa’a Rolo! Boise is now 11*.
