Camp sights

Quarterback coach/play-caller Jordan Wynn threw well — and often.

Receivers coach Luke Matthews ran routes.

Defensive coordinator Kevin Clune hit the blocking sled, running backs coach Wayne Moses ran, linebacker coach Kurt Gouveia demonstrated a space-creating move, and so forth. Center Kody Afusia and defensive lineman Kennedy Tulimasealii also led drills.

The UH football clinics are show-and-tell sessions. Yesterday’s 5-hour camp was at Roosevelt High. The series continues with Monday’s camp at Waiakea High.

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

    ST- great shots!

  2. tommui June 13, 2014 7:03 am

ST- what was the attendance at RHS?

    And good morning to you.

  3. Old School Dave June 13, 2014 7:07 am

    Morning all.

Whoa, that’s a nice field up at Roosevelt High. Roughriders rate, eh?

  4. Stephen Tsai June 13, 2014 7:13 am

I hadn’t been there since I covered a high school game in 1987. Very nice field. I understand the NFL and the Garrett Ogawa-led alumni association helped pay for the field.

  5. boolakanaka June 13, 2014 7:43 am

Aloha all–damn, that’s a nice looking field!!! Imua Waiakea!

  6. al June 13, 2014 7:57 am

Making memories. Thanks to all of the above.

  8. NorthShoreFan June 13, 2014 8:10 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…bootiful day.

pretty soon Fall Camp…time waits for no one…IMUA WARRIORS!

  9. innocent observer June 13, 2014 8:22 am

does not appear that there were too many athletes at the camp. why?

  10. Stephen Tsai June 13, 2014 8:53 am

I didn’t take pics of any students because I’m not clear on the rule.

  11. tommui June 13, 2014 9:48 am

The ‘UH: Highest College Athletics Travel Costs in the Nation, Help!’ campaign has only generated less than half of the $10,000 goal.

You can help put it over the top!

Contributions can be sent to the University of Hawaii Foundation either through its website or send a check = make sure you earmark it for the above.

    Thanks.

  12. hatakeman June 13, 2014 10:07 am

I have asked UHAD for clear instruction about sending personal checks to UH Foundation. The UHAthletics website does not provide these instructions; only on-line credit card donations are clearly detailed. I still have not received any information. It must be at least two months since I asked via email. Maybe one of you can post this information on this blog.

  13. Stephen Tsai June 13, 2014 10:51 am

    Hatakeman:
Are you trying to donate to the overall athletic department or a specific sport such as football or softball?

  14. Lowtone123 June 13, 2014 11:13 am

With all the problems that the athletic department is dealing with right now the news that many athletes had their stipend checks delayed forcing some to sleep in the locker room, go hungry or miss rent. Not the kind of news they needed right now.

  15. jimmy the lock June 13, 2014 11:39 am

In other futbol news, Spain gets spanked by the toking Amsterdamians…GO NETHERLANDS!

    TGIF!

    Howzit Tsaikos!

    Nice pics, ST!

jtl – pick a team and stay on the bandwagon. No getting off!
    Espana will rise again!

  18. C-Pop June 13, 2014 12:04 pm

ESPN – College Football live report UH football players missed checks forced to sleep in lockers & beach. Bad exposure!

  19. PONO June 13, 2014 12:30 pm

Interesting that a fan wants to donate money and is asking the AD specifics about how to write his check and no response. Then he is asking for money to cover the high costs of travel on a fundraising website. Don’t make sense to me.

  20. Boolakanaka June 13, 2014 12:36 pm

I was living in Brasil for work during the 2002 World Cup that was held in Japan. Because of the time difference the games came on at 3:30am; in this small town I was located in Bahia, police would run the sirens at 3:15am to get everyone up, and then all the bars would reopen–you gotta love brasil–adoro brasil!!

  21. What? June 13, 2014 12:42 pm

    #12
Maybe you should contact UH Foundation instead.

  22. Down with... June 13, 2014 12:47 pm

ST or any UH Football Player who has to sleep in the locker room…

My family and I get room at my condo if you need a place to sleep and food to eat. Just write to ST he has my email….

“somebody needs to get punched in the face at UH”

  23. PONO June 13, 2014 12:57 pm

    22. I think that would be an NCAA violation by giving free room to a player.

  24. PONO June 13, 2014 12:58 pm

From what people are saying it sounds like the late stipend checks has been going on for a while. Too many excuses and not enough answers. Just another black eye to an already beat up program.

  25. st. anthony trojan June 13, 2014 1:07 pm

Let me see if I got this correct! You can ‘starve’ a cat, dog, horse, and get ur arse hauled before a judge 4 ‘cruelty to animals’…..but deny food n housing 4 a NCAA ‘scholarship athletic’…n is ok…
cuz only 9 days….n our AD says…’we have to be careful how we approach this’ or something to that effect…

Yea I dare say something is definitely wrong here, or at the NCAA, or both.

A yesterday a blogger, with patience to spare, explaining his delima (me podogee) on season ticket renewals, n the ‘E. K. Fernandez’ ride they put him through.

Then out of the other side of the mouth….please donate…please buy season tickets….please ‘warriors’ play hard for your school…be proud…attend volunteer workouts…bust your arse 4 ur school…don’t worry, we will take care of you….sounds like a sitting governor huh?…

  26. Down with... June 13, 2014 1:15 pm

23: Pono….not if he is my “family friend”. In Hawaii we all calabash cousins right, come come…come inside…no worry about the NCAA-dey don’t know anyting anyways.

  27. bowwar June 13, 2014 1:16 pm

Regarding the late stipends, there is ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE FOR IT…If this was private business, those accounting folks (e.g. Accounts Payable) would be fired for total incompetance. Being unionized, the UH breeds incompetancy in its administration staff and there are alot of folks working there who are simply there for the paycheck and not doing any work. This has been going on for years…WHERE IS DMK NOW??? Surely had alot to say about athletics, but this is simply incompetancy at the core of the UH.

  28. PONO June 13, 2014 1:23 pm

    26. If it was a cute volleyball player that might be another story.

  29. PONO June 13, 2014 1:28 pm

    27. Most university staffs are unionized. Why is is that only at our university do these things happen?

  30. Stephen Tsai June 13, 2014 1:49 pm

I think it’s OK if the players find temporary places on their own. It’s not OK if the school tries to help. That’s what got Boise State in trouble.

  31. 3-Prong June 13, 2014 1:51 pm

Happy Aloha Friday Gang. EH! Smile….., you guys live in Paradise!

Happy Fathers Day weekend to all of us who are lucky enough to know the joys of parenthood.

…on a somber note, UH lost a Super Fan (my Father-In-Law) this past Sunday. Will miss cheering on the Bows with him. Let’s Go Bows.

  32. Buffoman June 13, 2014 2:23 pm

If they have not gotten their checks as of this blog, we should keep a daily count of how many days it will be until the matter is cleared.

Can you imagine if a professor had to with this long for his check?

Can you imagine what would happen if the administrators, president and others up there had to wait this long for their checks?

Seems like athletics are an after thought, a nagging inconvenience for the institution to have to eventually get around to dealing with.

  33. Old School Dave June 13, 2014 2:29 pm

Agree, where is the outcry from grandstanding politicians?? DMK, Will Espero, Mark Takai, Sam Slom????

Players at D-IAA schools like Weber State get taken better care of than at UH.

  34. SteveM June 13, 2014 2:53 pm

3-Prong — my condolences on the passing of your father-in-law.
Always very sad when we lose another long time UH fan.

  35. NorthShoreFan June 13, 2014 3:37 pm

me thinks all these comments need to be forwarded to UH Administration. They need to be bombarded with e-mails expressing dissatisfaction.

  36. Stephen Tsai June 13, 2014 3:45 pm

It’s still baffling why UH just can’t front the money for a delayed check. The money already is budgeted. And how hard is it to just cut a check?

  37. gobows June 13, 2014 3:59 pm

sounds like going to the UH really sucks. no wonder hard for recruit. #headupthea$$

  38. Boolakanaka June 13, 2014 4:10 pm

3-prong, much aloha and condolences to you and your ohana!

  39. Buffoman June 13, 2014 4:14 pm

It is not just the athletes. As I previously posted, my child’s experience at Purdue, which is way larger than the UH was second to none. It is the entire institution’s mindset with regard to it’s student population. Purdue values its students and it shows.

Both schools are land grant institutions and that’s where the similarities end.

  40. Kekoa June 13, 2014 4:16 pm

3-Prong ~ Your f-i-l has perpetual season tickets in the WB Memorial section of God’s stadium in the sky. May he rest in peace.

  41. C-Pop June 13, 2014 4:41 pm

ST: Cutting checks requires signature’s and personnel with urgency to run down ADM signature, if it’s even UHAD procedure. Woes of a small budget program!

  42. Kekoa June 13, 2014 4:42 pm

Not a *peep* from the new UH President since being selected. This is more than just a ‘tardy’ situation when folks are waiting for their financial aide. Step up or step aside. They skipped over a well-rounded leader who may have had a solution in short order.

  43. Old School Dave June 13, 2014 5:01 pm

UH can cut a check (wire transfer) for $200K to someone posing as a concert promoter, but can’t take care of its own student-athletes. Correct me if I’m wrong, but the finance guy who said OK to the $200K wire transfer is still employed by UH. Unbelievable. Talk about no accountability.

    You’re wrong.

  45. 3-Prong June 13, 2014 5:54 pm

    SteveM, boo, kekoa: Thank you.

Additional side notes on my Father-In-Law.

    – he owned Bowling Shirts Inc. If you were a bowler in the 60s, 70s, and 80s you wore his shirts. Yes, the ones with the black fuzzy flocked letters!
    – for many years until his fairly recent retirement, hand embroidered the names in script on all the Wahine V-Ball jerseys and warmups.
    – a graduate of UH, he loved the Rainbows. In his younger days he went to the football and basketball games. Since then he would not miss any UH event on TV especially football, basketball, men’s vball, and his beloved Wahine.

  46. kawika49 June 13, 2014 5:56 pm

Too bad they didn’t hire the Officer. They found me in the jungles, on R&R, wherever I happened to be, monthly, and paid me in cash and on time.

  47. Boolakanaka June 13, 2014 6:03 pm

3-prong, sounds like a great life and even a greater man! Hope to share a cold one with him, one day, on the other side….

  48. kawika49 June 13, 2014 6:05 pm

The sad thing is civilians don’t realize that the military is one of the largest educational system in the US; from community college to University; to graduate school. They have trade schools from; Pole linemen, Engineers, Computer Science, baccalaureate and Graduate courses.

  49. kawika49 June 13, 2014 6:07 pm

Oh and by the way; they feed and house over five million people a day.

  50. wafan June 13, 2014 6:08 pm

UH incompetence has reached the web.

    http://www.cnbc.com/id/101758211?__source=xfinity|mod&par=xfinity

At least the folks in charge are really good at screwing up. How much of a raise or job extension will they get for putting UH in the national spotlight of shame?

  51. wafan June 13, 2014 6:09 pm

    Finally pau school.

  52. wafan June 13, 2014 6:09 pm

    Greetings to everyone

  53. wafan June 13, 2014 6:11 pm

3-Prong . . . sorry about your father-in-law. I am sure he continues to cheer from the best seats in the House!

  54. Rodney June 13, 2014 6:57 pm

    This sure hurts recruiting!!!!

  58. Fei Jai June 13, 2014 9:17 pm

@50. Why beat around the bush when talking about who is in charge of athletics? Say it. Ben jay. Wassamatta you, you ben’s kin? The national embarrassment falls on Ben jays lap, who, by the way, doesn’t give a rip as he is too busy visiting family and friends in Philly on his “business trip”.

  59. al June 13, 2014 9:27 pm

3-prong…my sincere heartfelt condolences to you and your wife’s ohana.
    reflect on the memories.

he made the only bowling shirt I ever owned…back in the day. waaaaay back in the day.

    aloha

  60. BigFan June 13, 2014 10:19 pm

3prong, was your father in laws name Merv? Think I met him a long time ago when I was in the industry. I do remember that Bowling Shirts was the place to go to get a fair price, quality and timely work. May he rest in peace.

  61. 3-Prong June 13, 2014 10:21 pm

Boo, wafan, whitey and al. Thank you again.

  64. markazulu June 13, 2014 11:17 pm

UH hasnt had good national exposure since 2007 🙁

I hope that changes this season 🙂

  65. st. anthony trojan June 13, 2014 11:18 pm

FJ….thought he was in Florida….but at least this post of yours…little less ‘chili pepper water’…
is nice you not blame Mr. Chow this time…have hope 4 you yet …..maybe….he he he

  66. Inyoface June 14, 2014 6:50 am

Whoever the qb is this year, he’ll be surrounded by an experienced offensive team. I’m expecting to see Iosefa, Lakalaka and the receiving corp to have a breakout season.
