Camp fire

Remember that old commercial with the slogan — Is it live or is it Memorex? (Here’s the link: Memorex.)

The burning question the past two weeks at the UH camps: Is fiery camp director Chris “Demo” Demarest using a megaphone or not?

Either way, Demo has captivated campers with a booming voice of encouragement and inspiration. He’s done a great job.

Today is the last day for the UH team camp. One of the highlights was the participation of 11 members of American Samoa’s Tafuna High. (Fun fact: Tafuna’s nickname is the Warriors.)

Tafuna’s top player, quarterback Daniel Fereti, attended the team camp. Here’s his highlight video (please, adjust your head): Fereti video.

Tafuna offensive coordinator Loso Iaulualo discusses the UH camp: Coach video.

^^98 degrees and humid here in NY…

  14. Shoko June 20, 2012 3:27 am

98 degrees is pretty hot at 9:19 am in NY. That is if the time stamp on the post is accurate. I don’t think even Phoenix or Vegas can reach that temp that early. Well, maybe Phoenix. I remember it gets so hot there that pet owners would buy their pets shoes because the sidewalks or roads would reach some unbearable temperatures.

Last Call, re #19, the Big East will have 13 football members when Navy joins in 2016 and needs to add one more western football-only member by then to even things out at 14. The conference’s #1 and #2 targets are BYU and Air Force, but both have already turned down offers. The word out of the Big East meetings a couple of weeks ago was that the conference plans to try again after negotiating its new TV deal this fall. If both BYU and Air Force pass again, there’s speculation Fresno State may be invited as the fallback choice.

    **************

Regarding the Big West’s decision whether to add Boise State, my understanding is that a 3/4 majority of the ten schools that will comprise the conference in 2013 (which includes both UH and San Diego State but excludes Pacific) must approve any new member invitation. That means eight yes votes are needed. I doubt there will be a formal ballot taken until it’s clear Boise State has eight yes votes.

  98. SteveM June 20, 2012 5:01 pm

Just saw this is Wikipedia under Larry Ellison “Charitiable Donations::

In August 2010 it was reported that Ellison is one of the 40 billionaires who has signed “The Giving Pledge”.[45][46][47] Ellison wrote: “Many years ago, I put virtually all of my assets into a trust with the intent of giving away at least 95 percent of my wealth to charitable causes. I have already given hundreds of millions of dollars to medical research and education, and I will give billions more over time. Until now, I have done this giving quietly—because I have long believed that charitable giving is a personal and private matter.”

As such, I would not expect overt gestures, and probably not to sports (except maybe the sailing team 😕 ) Also note that Oracle owns Sun Microsystems. High end UNIX base.

don’t know if the sale of C&C is final, but if Mr Ellison is the buyer, welcome to Hawaii and hope you and your family get to enjoy all the customs and tradition this great state has to offer.

Because he was friends with Harvard’s then President, he donated millions

to that school but opted out when his friend left that institution…

Wonder if coach Chow could scout out Lanai and maybe lie out on the

beach under a coconut tree with a fruity drink and maybe catch Mr. Ellison’s

    attention…and become friends.

    Off-topic –

MPI is looking for a new girls vb head coach. This would make it the 3rd HC in 3 years. 😈

How terrible I am…thinking only of his money.

I repent. Hereafter, I will refrain. And as Whitey wrote,

I hope the best of Hawaii for him and his loved ones.

    could this be coming true?

The BCS commissioners have backed a plan for a four-team playoff with the sites for the national semifinals rotating among the major bowl games and a selection committee picking the participants. The plan will be presented to university presidents next week for approval.

Once the presidents sign off — and that seems likely — major college football’s champion will be decided by a playoff for the first time, starting in 2014.

    …”and a selection committee picking the participants”…

hmmmmm…who are the “pickers”? And who are the “pickees”?

    The same old BCS schools?

    more readings

They also said that under the plan a selection committee would choose the schools that play for the national title.

The people spoke on condition of anonymity because the commissioners did not want to reveal many details before talking to their bosses.

There are still major details to be worked out, such as who exactly makes up the selection committee, but college football will take a page from college basketball, which uses a committee of athletic directors and commissioners to pick the teams for its championship tournament.

The 12-member BCS Presidential Oversight Committee meets Tuesday in Washington. The commissioners and Swarbrick all stressed that ultimately the decision lies with the presidents.

Re: BCS 4-team playoff… Funny how there is zero mention of the NCAA in the whole selection process (so far). Our guess of the Elitists picking from a pool of Elitists is probably a safe assumption.

This proposed four-team playoff system seems to be headed in the right direction. However, since strength of schedule – along with conference championships – would be a factor in deciding what team gets to the playoff, I would think smaller schools would need to schedule a gauntlet of non-conference bodybag games to even raise eyebrows. Boise State (while in the MWC), under the proposed plan, wouldn’t get them any closer to a National Championship because of their weak schedule and weak conference affiliation. Boise being in the BE might get them a little closer tho. I dunno…we’ll see I guess.
