“Calvin from Kona”

cal3

“Calvin from Kona” was mislabeled.

True, he was raised in Kona and graduated from Konawaena High School. But he was born in Florida, attended a college in Oregon before transferring to UH, and worked on Maui, Oahu and in Portland. He had recently moved to Washington.

Wherever he lived, he rooted for the UH football team.

In 2007, he wrote: “My first memory of being a UH fan was when I was a kid. We didn’t get the games on TV, so I watched the “Dick Tomey Show” every Sunday since I was 10 or so. I really enjoyed the “muddle huddle.” My first actual game was UH vs. Oregon in, I believe, in 1988. Hawaii won. I think Clayton Mahuka ran back a kick for a TD. It’s all fuzzy now. When I enrolled in UH, I bought my first set of season tickets. Since them, I have been a regular attendee of UH games, good, bad, or ugly.”

When he lived/worked in Kona, he would travel to Honolulu on game day, check into a hotel, shop and then coordinate a tailgate party for between six and 40 people.

It probably was at a blog function when we first met Β Calvin. The “when” part is fuzzy. But he was a regular at tailgates, karaoke nights and other UH sporting events. He was smart, witty, funny and might have acted in a karaoke video.

Calvin Lum Won, of Kona β€” and several places β€” died this past week. He will be missed.

Yes 9 and 0 is tough but I have found myself becoming less frustrated with this team and more respectful of their ongoing efforts. This has been an incredibly challenging season and I don’t see much in the way of quit in this team. I am happy for qb SS. He played a great game against Navy. He is not blessed with awesome physical skills but has persisted with grit, determination and a positive attitude. I wonder if I or any of us would have as much to give under the circumstances he has faced. It was good to see coach Chow’s offense produce. I know there are many who want to vote him off the island and personally escort him to HNL for destinations unknown. But someone has had to keep our boys playing and believing. I assume the someone is coach Chow. So here’s hoping the next few games have some bright spots. In any case I will be there supporting. All things change and this will too…….there are not too many directions for it to go….except up.

  11. nanakuli November 11, 2013 7:56 am

Calvin sounds like a true UH fan. We need 40,000 of them every week to cheer on the Warriors.

  12. Buffoman November 11, 2013 7:59 am

I agree, #1. It sounds ominous, and I hope I am mistaken. What was nice of the tribute is that when you describe “fan” this gentleman is the definition of “Rainbow Warrior Fan”. If there were more of folks like Calvin, we’d need a larger stadium and would probably not have to go begging for donations.

The team is improving. The o-line is doing a better job as we did not hear or read of too many if any complaints following the game. I thought that they did a good job run blocking for Joey.

I do think that our LB play may have slipped some. Special teams had a bad game.

  13. papajoe2 November 11, 2013 8:11 am

    Mahalo Veterans!

    Good morning, Tsaikos!

I couldn’t get my mind around it when I saw the post about Calvin on FB. Prayers for his family. It was at a tailgate that I met Calvin. So sorry to hear he’s no longer here.

Saluting all the veterans present & past today.

  16. BigWave96744 November 11, 2013 8:46 am

    R.I.P. bro…

  17. Shoko November 11, 2013 8:47 am

    Happy Veterans Day!

Sounds like Calvin was, indeed, a dedicated fan. Condolences to the Lum Ohana.

Think a lot of the fans that have expressed their disappointment about this season are just exhausted. After all, it does take a lot of energy.

  18. Wes'side Warrior November 11, 2013 9:17 am

    Morning, Gang!

Prayers for Calvin and ‘ohana. Definitely would be nice to have the majority of the state as supportive of UH as Calvin was. One can wish…

Have a great and safe Veteran’s Day, everyone!

And to all those who have served or continue to serve, AND your families… I salute you!

  19. Ipu Man November 11, 2013 9:22 am

  20. Old School Dave November 11, 2013 9:28 am

RIP to Calvin and his family. A true fan, indeed.

  21. Dan-O November 11, 2013 9:38 am

I wish all the so-called “fans” on the other boards (who are trying to get others to boycott Saturdays game) could read that great tribute to Calvin.

I have much respect for the team, as even though many fans have quit on them, they still believe….as do I .

  22. Moocher November 11, 2013 9:46 am

last season i understood SS had his own limitations. but i could never judge his play because the offense was bad all over. it was pretty sad how people really rode the kid hard. he’s improved this year, the offense has improved, it’s night and day compared to last year.

I have no real complaints with hawaii’s offense. after watching joey iosefa, yeah, what could have been. but TG is watching for his second season and let’s all hope the lights come on.

If it does, with better line play, experienced backs and receivers, it’s gonna be awesome to see. With a few games left, i am thankful for the seniors and hope they get in a few wins on the way out. it was through their hardships that others will reap the benefits, including us fans. i also think as wins come, the D will get stronger.

last year so many said they don’t mind the losses as long as we compete. well, they are competing so how about supporting them by supporting their coach. if they end up 0-12, it’s not like a von appen 0-12…at least to me it isnt.

    Happy Birthday TChahng !!!

… saw him at the exchange garden shop last week… or rather, he saw me– I didn’t recognize him since its been so long… 😳

But he goes to the games and promised to drop by again some day.

  30. whitey November 11, 2013 11:08 am

didn’t know how to interpet CFK headlines earlier, but CFK you is one true warrior and where ever you are, bless you and thanks for your memories.

  31. primo123 November 11, 2013 11:13 am

amazing what SS can do with a running back that can gash the defense for nearly 200 yards of rushing

  32. papajoe2 November 11, 2013 11:24 am

    RIP Calvin from Kona.
Condolences to the family of CfK.

  33. Inyoface November 11, 2013 11:28 am

    Warriors for life!

  34. papajoe2 November 11, 2013 11:29 am

Not only that SS has experience but the coaches probably called plays that he could be successful. He had a had a very high completion percentage but for 29 completions, less than 250 yards. With Iosefa playing well running the ball and blocking, it definitely helped SS and the offense. So what do we think about the other backs?

  35. Capitolist/WassupDoc November 11, 2013 11:47 am

First of all – What does FB stand for in #15. What happened to Calvin – all Stephen said that he moved to Washington – i assume the State and not DC.

  36. UHfan808 November 11, 2013 12:13 pm

    Good afternoon, Tsai-kos and Lurk-ers!

Sad news about Calvin from Kona πŸ™

    Calvin:
Glad we had a chance to hang out and cheer on our team and sometimes each other haha at UH basketball games and numerous Tsai-ko outings (fb T-gates and TV-gates, during fb season, off(fb)-season get-togethers and just because get-togethers like afterwork catchups, birthdays, karaoke nites, for fun darts challenges, and end of fb season Christmas Parties)!

I had already missed you when you moved back to the mainland but happy we got to catch up a bit from time to time over the last couple years when you’d visit Oahu!

    Rest in Peace! I will miss you dearly, dude! πŸ™ πŸ™ πŸ™ πŸ™ πŸ™ πŸ™ πŸ™ πŸ™ πŸ™

I love you Mr. Tsai-ko brother, Calvin from Kona! πŸ˜€

SS and Joey, the receivers, the Oline, etc. I saw some positives this weekend. Looking forward to Saturday!

  41. primo123 November 11, 2013 1:15 pm

    #34

seemed like the same plays they run inside the tackles. i was wondering with those holes, if lakalaka or st juste coulda done the same?

  42. kama krab November 11, 2013 1:18 pm

    Aloha Calvin.

    Mahalo to all the Veterans!

    Go Warriors!
    Go Wahine!
    Go UH!

  46. oldtimer808 November 11, 2013 2:06 pm

My condolences to the Calvin Lum Won family. He was a true fan of UH. We should celebrate life as we are all blessed to be able to give of ourselves daily until our time comes, so to despair and be frustrated over a football game should be put in the right perspective. I feel for our Rainbow Warriors but the lessons of adversity will serve them well to make them better persons. Our student/athletes are showing us the heart of a warrior who never gives up. Whatever you folks think of Coach Chow you have to respect him for the culture he is trying to establish in the football program.

  47. tommui November 11, 2013 2:08 pm

    GOOD AFTERNOON HAWAII!

    Rest in peace Brother Calvin.

Re#41 primo123 – I was impressed at the holes that the O-Line open for Joey to run through. The guy is built like a fireplug, ala Sims, Czonka, the “Frig” etc. And he has speed too!

If the line has coalesced, I think our other backs would do well also – some of those holes were BIG!

  48. oldtimer808 November 11, 2013 2:10 pm

It is a culture of responsibility, discipline, consideration and unselfishness and it has nothing to do with win and losses.

  49. Bowwar November 11, 2013 2:31 pm

Happy Veteran’s Day and THANK YOU to all veterans for everything they do or have done for our country…RIP to Calvin…Never met or known, but I always pray for fellow Warrior fans. Someday, we’ll all reach the promised land.

  58. chopsueyboy November 12, 2013 2:24 am

NMSU just too BIG & shooting high % from the field & free throws, Rainbow Warriods few opportunities to run. Goodnight Tsai-kos!

  59. al November 12, 2013 3:29 am

aloha oe brother calvin from kona.

definitely a good guy. never complaining, always a positive kind of fella. … may you he at peace with the Lord.

    …nuff said!

  60. Maddog50 November 12, 2013 4:18 am

RIP Calvin…..a true fan. Just a thought. After watching this past game. These kids have no quit and are just a few plyers away from having a winning teasm, look at the impact that Joey made….just one guy added to the mix elevated the entire effort on Offense. To those who think it is good to rally a boycott…..they are not friends or fans of the program period- I will be sending more money to the “Game Plan” effort this week. I will never lose faith or hope…..th9s thin will turn around soon—Go Warriors

  61. 3-Prong November 12, 2013 6:08 am

Chopsueyboy: Reardon seems to feel that Gib should have decided to run more. Are you saying NMSU kept them from running. Didn’t get to see game. Your thoughts? Could their BIG boys get up and down the court?
