"Bula" is center of attention

The UFL’s Hartford Colonials want to give the ball to  former Warrior offensive lineman  Brysen “Bula” Ginlack.

“We hope he can play center for us,” said Jerry Glanville, Hartford’s first-year head coach.

Glanville said Ginlack earned a berth on the training-camp roster after a successful tryout in Houston two months ago.

“He was the best lineman in Houston,” Glanville said. “You can never have enough good linemen.”

Ginlack can play all five line positions.

The Colonials had 10 o-linemen last year. There are 15 on this year’s training-camp roster.

How many will stay?

“How many can play?” Glanville said. “All those who can play, we’ll keep. I never really get rid of big men who can play.”

Glanville said the current roster is at 70. He said the active roster must be trimmed to 50. The 51st player is the third quarterback who suits up only in an emergency.

Colt Brennan and Jerrod Johnson are Hartford’s only quarterbacks. (Josh McCown, last year’s starter, wants an NFL shot and did not sign a new contract.)

“It will be in interesting,” Glanville said. “Both of our quarterbacks have physical issues.”

Brennan suffered multiple injuries in a car crash last November. Johnson, of Texas A&M, underwent rotator-cuff surgery last year.

“Otherwise we wouldn’t get them,” Glanville said. “They would be with someone else. This is a league of second chances.”

Glanville then added: “We’re also a league that has a collective-bargaining agreement. We’re going to play football this year.”

Former UH line coach Mike Cavanaugh, who returns to Oregon State today, visited Hawaii the past week for his wedding anniversary and to attend UH assistant coach Brian Smith’s wedding.

Cav said he made the plate-lunch tour.

Twice.

He also visited with UH head coach Greg McMackin yesterday. Cav said Mack did not object to Cav wearing OSU apparel, but cautioned that the Warriors are an Under Armour team, not Nike.

Cav always reminded me of “Stinger” from Top Gun. Here’s Stinger:

There was a mini-workout yesterday involving quarterbacks Jeremy Higgins and Cayman Shutter, receivers Miah Ostrowski and Breydan Torres-Keohokapu, and Cav’s son Blair, who will be a high school senior this year.

    ST, re ur article this am in the SA. miah grayshirted in 2007 and redshirted in 2008.

    i cant rem a baller at uh that was underestimated as much as ostrowski was in his initial 3-years. there were other athletes that took awhile to blossom at manoa, like nasty, bc of of injuries, but expectations were always high. not only is miah projected to start but he will be blessed with a seasoned QB in his first year as starter. “no time to look back” as satchel paige would say, “time is gaining”. for miah, his 2011 debut as one of our warrior starting slots, is a long time coming and well deserved. it couldnt have happened to a better player or a finer role model. enjoy the moment folks–we have 28 games remaining on the calendar to watch this celebrated athlete.

    while royce and miah are no-brainers to represent one-half of our warrior receiving corps, circa 2011, the other two-receivers remain wide open–at least from a fan’s perspective. AND, although there maybe more to the coaching alchemy in selecting a starter by rolo, et al, there appears to be a field fraught with talent, speed and potential from which to choose. i can think of 4-6 possibilities, including juco record-setter, chris gant, and true frosh sensation, chinedu amadi.

    in the end, staying healthy and flashing route-IQ instincts in camp will factor as much as a 36″ vertical jump or a 4.4/40. im not so sure, there will be a decisive decision by the end of camp. we may see packages by our opener against colorado and given our talent, that maybe the wisest decision. go warriors!

    Looks like Colt might have a decent shot at starting with McCown unsigned. Hopefully, his injuries don’t have any significant impact on his playing abilities. You would think that Glanville would bring in an experienced NFL QB to compete with Colt and the young draftee…especially with both of them coming off injuries.

    i’d like to point out that I think coach cav should not have worn any osu apparel while on campus. what’s the point? unless you have a point. at which point, it would have to be pointedly incorrect to have your apparel pointed in a certain direction to make a point. who appointed him to be the point man in that capacity? I don’t mean to point a certain finger, but the point being is that my point is pointless even in an effort to just get my nonsensical point across. 🙂 bleed green in manoa! 🙂

The Warriors were second in interceptions with 23 and ninth in fumbles recovered with 15. That’s the kind of defense McMackin preaches. In his fourth season as UH’s head coach, McMackin has spent most of his career as a defensive coordinator.

    our much maligned oline…again this group gets another beating on the head.

    i was watching the northwestern-hawaii game of the infamous o-for season of 1999. to think that those same guys in the trenches turned it around to ncaa record highs in one year is amazing. of course we know that the bald one, cav, was most instrumental in the turn around. however, still, it took five guys in the same uniforms believing and trusting their technique and they did.

    this year’s greenhorn oline has the potential to make all the pundits and naysayers eat crow. they have leaders in sila and leonard. they have guys hungry for playing time and respect in laurel and sila (again). they have young guys just itching to play in front of the hometown crowd; makaniai-winchester, lefotu, shigematsu, loeffler, and the like. and still more young guys pushing for time and a legend’s son just waiting for a turn.

    at the end of the year, it is my guess that we will be drooling at the prospects of 2012 led by our veteran and most solid oline.

    Of topic: In today’ SA there is a picture of the Hawaii 5-0 cast. The name Taylor Wiley sounds familiar. Is he from Hawaii? All the rest of the cast is from somewhere other than Hawaii. Even the 3 new hires are not from here. I hope the crew behind the camera are from here. Probably not the high profile ones though. Maybe they should call it “In Hawaii 5-0” or something else.     i like the interior of our o-line. i think we will be ok there. it’s the perimeter that is of a concern to me. i believe they have the ability, but you cannot beat experience on the edge to keep your qb healthy and accurate. they will be tested early and often with different packages to say the least. the main thing is for them to play as a unit and as is the mantra, “trust your technique”. i agree that the potential is there for great things from these young men.

    gigi — I have a friend of mine visiting from Arizona who made the best huevos rancheros I ever had for breakfast this morning! That homemade salsa — roasted tomato and jalapeno. That was amazing. Tonite we’re having chile verde, some mexican rice and other goodies. Being such a foodie myself, I can’t think of anything i’d rather be doing than eating a really good meal. 🙂
