Breaking camp

The Warriors practiced for two hours today, beginning at 7 a.m., their earliest start of training camp. Defensive end John Fonoti and defensive tackle Fale Laeli resumed practicing today. After practice, the Warriors broke training camp, officially moving out of the dance studios.

The best part of the end of camp? The training table is served in Stan Sheriff Center, which is next to the locker room. During training camp, they had to walk to the student cafeteria overlooking the grass practice field.

Another practice, another ice treatment. Quarterback Inoke Funaki referred to himself as “The Iceman With A Tan.”

Can Aloha Stadium provide recorded crowd noise to simulate game conditions? I would think having it blasting while they’re practicing their gametime scenarios would be really beneficial.

“Justifying the picture of Colt Brennan above, he tossed a perfect fade route to Todd Yoder in the corner of the end zone against Reed Doughty and the first team defense.”

Love this report. Colt haters will perspire to hear he is working against the first team defense. His good work in the preseason games has been met with comments like- “he was playing against the scrubs who will be working at burger joints when the season begins…”

Wonder if Colt will get a chance to work with the second or first team this weekend??? wowowow.

I really enjoy the way this blogger writes:

“And I have to mention Colt Brennan again, who, by virtue of his second magic act in three appearances, already has the skeptics invoking Babe Laufenberg in their haste to dismiss what is patently obvious–that the kid has exceeded expectations so dramatically already that, if nothing else, he’s going to be around for a while. Think there’s a buzz now? Wait until next preseason.”

    Feature on Ken Niumatalolo.

“I just try to be who I am,” Niumatalolo said. “I’m a kid from the north shore of Hawaii. I’m pretty laid-back off the field, but I’m as competitive as you can be. I try to bring that approach to our kids, that we’re going to be gentlemen off the field, but on the field we’re going to try to rip your head off.”

A native of Laie’, Niumatalolo channeled that competitive fire on the basketball court and football field, starring for Honolulu’s Radford High School, just a stone’s throw from Pearl Harbor, before taking his football skills to the University of Hawaii.

Before he became the starter for the Rainbow Warriors, Niumatalolo did what any competitive quarterback would do — he complained about not playing enough. And when he did that complaining, it was to someone who would later become what Niumatalolo calls his best friend, mentor and father figure, then-Hawaii offensive coordinator Paul Johnson.

“I’d go into his office to complain, ‘Hey, I need more playing time,'” Niumatalolo said. “So I spent a lot of time talking to Coach Johnson. With those talks, we got to know each other a little bit more off the field.”

A friendship was born, Niumatalolo got his chance to start, and the three-year letterman led the Rainbow Warriors to their first postseason bowl appearance in the program’s history in 1989.

  45. Jason August 20, 2008 1:14 pm

homey: I think the cost of the training table is taken out of their scholarship? Something like that. Non-scholarship players would need to pay, I think. Stephen can clarify that, I’m sure.

  46. Garret August 20, 2008 1:14 pm

I didn’t like this statement about Hawaii.

Hawaii is known as a laid-back, relaxing, perhaps downright lazy place to live and work. The Naval Academy — well, it can’t exactly be described the same way.

  51. Garret August 20, 2008 1:17 pm

Florida didn’t use a traditional scout (service) team to prepare for UH today…they had their 2nd unit on offense and defense pretend to be the Warriors.

The University of Florida football team has officially broken summer camp and it will now begin official preparation for the season opener against Hawaii next week.

The Gators had a “Hawaii scrimmage” on Tuesday where the first teamers went up against the second teamers who were acting like Hawaii on offense and defense.

On the injury front, wide receiver Percy Harvin once again did not practice but defensive tackle Omar Hunter did practice for the second straight day.

Meyer did say he was concerned that no one had stepped up at one of the two defensive tackle positions and that the Gators would use at times a 3-3-5 alignment defensively to compensate. Meyer said Lawrence Marsh would start at the nose but that the other tackle position was up in the air.

  52. Garret August 20, 2008 1:18 pm

    Q&A with Bess!

(On how long it takes for a quarterback and a receiver to develop a good relationship) “I don’t have an exact answer for that, but at the same time, me and my quarterback at the University of Hawaii, (Colt Brennan) we’ve known each other for three years. We clicked instantly. We were actually good friends off the field. I think your relationship off the field just as well as your relationship on the field is just as important. The more and more reps we get with Chad (Pennington), the more and more opportunities we get to spend with him off the field, going to the movies like we did last night, just anyway in general is definitely going to help your chemistry.”

  53. Garret August 20, 2008 1:19 pm

    More from Bess.

(On when did he feel comfortable at Hawaii and is he feeling comfortable here)

“It took me about a whole year at Hawaii. Obviously, the offense was, I wouldn’t say complicated, but it definitely wasn’t easy. The more and more reps I got of it, the more and more comfortable I got with the offense. The same thing here, I don’t see myself getting comfortable at anytime being in this level, especially with the expectations I want from myself. I want to be great. I want to be the best I can be for the team and make as many plays possible. I know in the NFL you can’t get comfortable, you always got to be hungry.”

  54. Garret August 20, 2008 1:20 pm

One more–looks like at least some of last year’s Warriors are keeping in touch as they try to make NFL rosters.

(On if he still talks to Colt Brennan)

“Yeah, I talk to him every other week or so. We’re all pretty busy so when we have a little free time off I go out and call him and we have a little conversation or a good text message.”

(On if he finds any similarities about trying to secure a roster spot)

“Somewhat, exactly. We all, all of the guys that I played with at college are out and working hard to earn a roster spot. That’s the biggest goal right now.”

  55. Hawaiianbod August 20, 2008 1:21 pm

  62. Jason August 20, 2008 1:38 pm

Pepa was out there, but they were doing that mix-and-match stuff for the O-line and receivers, so I only noticed him a few times. Rausch appears to the naked eye like he’s regressing, but Stephen made a good point, that everything now is about getting the timing right, and that is adding to the difficulty. Still, there were two times when Rausch tried to sling a shuffle pass to his backs who were five yards away. The first time, he threw a rocket that bounced off Wright-Jackson’s hands; the second time, he side-armed a pass to his back. I hope he starts to improve soon, though, or I may join the group that is calling for a QB controversy β€” and I’m a huge Rausch fan! I think it’s a bit early to be calling for a change, but you can’t deny that Alexander and Funaki looked pretty decent today.

Joey Cadiz got carted off the field with what sj-macro and I thought was a shoulder injury, but Kazz said it was a leg injury. Considering Kazz had a much better viewing angle, and the fact that Cadiz was carted off, I think it’s safe to say it was a leg injury.

I can’t say I was very observant today β€” getting up at 5 AM does that to me, I guess. Things are coming back to me in bits and pieces.

    Good Afternoon Tsaikos!

Just catching up after the last few days.

Frank’s in Texas and they are busy getting ready to start training. He was very surprised at how many mentioned him in their posts. Thanks to everyone for making him feel special and appreciated. He got on the bus about 2:30 in the morning yesterday and they flew directly to Fort Hood.

d1 – Thank you so much for your generosity! I was getting ready to pay for us at KK, but Stretch told me that I didn’t owe anything and I knew it was you. Loved being able to listen to you sing again. Tsaiko men have plenty of talent!

Ronnie – I got you tickets…send me an email! We need to get things ready for Fresno, like any news on the hotel?

Hawaiianbod – It was great to meet and talk with you the other night. I hope that we are going to see you at the games.

    Check in later! See ya!

  64. Jason August 20, 2008 1:44 pm

da princess’ classmate: Meatoga should be in the rotation this year. We’ll see a lot of him, I think. He’s got a huge upside.

Fonoti looked okay, but Fale might want to take it slow. He still looked a little bit gimpy, not yet 100%. I have confidence in guys like Josh Leonard, Keala Watson, and Vaughn Meatoga. Not having Rocky Savaiigaea hurts, though, cause with him and Fale, that’s one mean five-man rotation.

WM – it’s summer in FL, where it thunderstorms almost everyday in the afternoon. Probably right around the 2nd half of the game. Been stuck outdoors and under umbrellas at Orlando-area theme parks numerous times, sometimes for 2+ hours.

So, can the players move into the dorms today? I thought regular students couldn’t move in till this weekend?

  67. Garret August 20, 2008 1:47 pm

    lava,

What I read today seemed to indicate that Harvin would play against UH. Before today I thought he was not going to play. If he doesn’t regress by the end of this week then I’d guess he’ll play. He probably won’t be at full speed though due to the injury.

  68. Kelli August 20, 2008 1:47 pm

  69. Garret August 20, 2008 1:49 pm

    WarriorMojo,

My experience in Florida (4 trips) and Texas (8 years) is that in August and September it is quite common to have sudden thunderstorms. It can go from amazingly hot to a downpour back to sunny and hot again in less than an hour! Trouble is, after the thunderstorm the humidity is way up!

  70. Garret August 20, 2008 1:51 pm

Good to hear that Fonoti and Fale are back at practice. Not too good to hear that Fale looks still hampered by injury. I agree with Jason that UH has excellent options at DT and Fale might not want to come back too early if he’s really hampered by injury.

  71. Stretch August 20, 2008 1:52 pm

The one thing that everyone has to remember about the QB situation is that whoever the QB is, they are NOT going to be throwing like Colt. If our expectations remain high, everyone will be disappointed when we have an incomplete pass.

Last year, I took it for granted that pass completions were automatic, but when I watched Boise St play in the Hawaii Bowl, I realized it isn’t.

  72. Committed Road Warrior August 20, 2008 1:54 pm

    NYUH,

I just ordered that Hawai’i iPTV box thingy yesterday that you referenced in your post and I hope to get it before the first volleyball game. If you’re still a fan of local programming as well as a nostalgic for old-kine UH football and basketball games, you might be up for ordering it.

From what I gathered about the service (with regards to UH sports), all of the football and some of the men’s basketball games will be shown on a tape-delayed basis (10am Hawai’i/1pm Pacific) similar to how it is back home. The volleyball and the remainder of the men’s basketball games will be shown LIVE.

  76. Manoa August 20, 2008 2:05 pm

Garrrett thanks for the note on Florida having the 2d string be the scout team for Hawaii against the 1st string. That’s Urban Meyer even after all the injuries they have had.

Interesting that they are using a 3-3-5– more people are playing this versatile D to counter no-huddle or quick change teams– the 5 DB’s can get confused and they are green in the back, so we will see. We can field a good 3-3-5 team with our safeties and linebackers and Mack is going to be doing something like a 3-3-5.

  77. Koauka August 20, 2008 2:05 pm

Take it easy, once the entire offense is set, the first team needs to work on timing and the little things that make it run.

Remember, this is the Ron Lee run and shoot. Everyone still in the learning stage.

Koauka: Exactly. Rausch definitely wasn’t Colt, but he didn’t look bad, either, just growing pains. I know people on other boards have talked about a QB controversy, and I think it’s too soon. But Alexander and Funaki are ready for a challenge, so hopefully the light goes on for Rausch again soon.

  82. PONO August 20, 2008 2:14 pm

I think that Funaki should give up football and go for stand up comedy. His quotes are hilarious. Watch out Frankie D.

If Stretch is the perfect guy …

I sense a bit of jealousy… One of these days you will understand. BTW – I am proud of you for asking Kelli out on her blog.

  84. gigi-hawaii Β© August 20, 2008 2:16 pm

haha. Am I the perfect woman? Fortunately, I am married.

  85. IsleStyle August 20, 2008 2:16 pm

    Ronnie–

Hi yourself! Yeah, great point in the last Blog Post about why they are teaching a new technique with the JUGS machine — live ammo. Still weird not using helmets while practicing catches…seems like a no-no…but I can see the rationale now

    Thanks for your take…:)

  86. Jason August 20, 2008 2:17 pm

Are you trying to get Kelli to SMU me? Or worse, her father to show up on my door? Please, it was an open invitation to all those who read Campus Life 101.

I swear, you guys are making me sound like a creep.

  87. Jason August 20, 2008 2:18 pm

Stretch and gigi, sitting in a tree …

    I feel nauseous.

  88. gigi-hawaii Β© August 20, 2008 2:18 pm

Liz, thanks for the offer of a free ticket to the games, but you know me, a little sun or rain would dampen my enthusiasm pretty quick — not to mention having to stay in 1 spot for several hrs.

Hey, maybe, I can get you interested in PPV???

  89. Stretch August 20, 2008 2:19 pm

Jason – no worry, A-Joe and I know her father, we’ll put in a good word for you.

  90. gigi-hawaii Β© August 20, 2008 2:20 pm

Jason, nope, the tree would bend and break.

  91. Jason August 20, 2008 2:20 pm

I guess we’ll have to kidnap gigi, then.

  92. gigi-hawaii Β© August 20, 2008 2:21 pm

    ack, not free ticket.

  93. SteveM August 20, 2008 2:21 pm

Jason is not a creep. But if a young Tsai-kette needs sanctuary at a larger Tsai-ko function, they should seek out Bulla’s Bombers and sit in their midst. Those mothers will protect you! πŸ˜†

  94. gigi-hawaii Β© August 20, 2008 2:22 pm

so long, pals, I gotta go to an appointment.

    bye.

  95. Jason August 20, 2008 2:24 pm

Is it too late to get Larry Jones to, IDK, beat Stretch to a pulp?

  96. Jason August 20, 2008 2:29 pm

<sarcasm> We’re now playing Matchmakers on two blogs, yippee. </sarcasm>

  97. (Jesse) James August 20, 2008 2:31 pm

    ST…Stretch is too young….and Jason…is like a baby….MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Stretch…You are soooo right. Even last year, when Colt was pulled from games or didn’t get put in because of the injuries, people were disappointed when Funaki or Graunke didn’t complete a pass…people were simply spoiled….remember fans booing Graunke and chanting “We want Colt!!!” when TG had a few bad passes….??? Yep, we have to remember that whoever the QB is, it won’t be Colt. The QB is who he is and we need to support him…..

Jason…it’s actually “shovel” pass….although “shuffle” and “shuttle” pass has been used to define that play, the original term was “shovel” pass because the QB “shoveled” the ball to the WR/RB/FB. Some people (especially announcers) misunderstood the term and started calling it a “shuffle” pass or a “shuttle” pass. This misnomer began to stick and today is often used interchangeably. Sorry, just a pet peeve of mine.

  98. (Jesse) James August 20, 2008 2:35 pm

Jason asked Kelli out on her blog??? When did this happen??? Oh snap, our little boy is growing up….MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA πŸ™‚

  99. WarriorMojo August 20, 2008 2:35 pm

    Those mothers will protect you!

Hahah, SteveM, you’ve been watching too many Coach Mack interviews, huh?

  100. Stretch August 20, 2008 2:36 pm

Too bad Stretchette realizes that I am NOT perfect…..

  101. Hawaiianbod August 20, 2008 2:37 pm

    Washington – 2
    Waipio – 4 (end of 1 inning) – 2 2-run home runs

  102. WarriorMojo August 20, 2008 2:39 pm

Kelli, RUN NOW! Run as fast and as far as your legs will carry you!

This is probably before you were a regular reader, but Jason has long been betrothed a… lady named Maryann(e). And Maryann(e) — with her wooden leg — don’t take kindly to people playing with her property.

  103. Dennis Halloran August 20, 2008 2:39 pm

It looks like the internet options for us mainlanders has more than doubled this year!
If only my DSL Extreme provider gave me ESPNGameplan!
$12.00 per game is still worth it.

  104. WarriorMojo August 20, 2008 2:41 pm

J(J), totally agree with you re shovel vs. shuffle vs. shuttle pass. Shuffle pass and shuttle pass don’t even make sense.

Now what’s the difference between a chop block and a cut block?

  105. Jason August 20, 2008 2:45 pm

I used to call it shovel, but the coaches started calling it shuffle. Go tell Alex Gerke that it’s a shovel pass. πŸ˜€

  107. Joel-Gainesville, FL August 20, 2008 2:53 pm

    WarriorMojo,

I bring a rain poncho to Florida Field when there is rain in the forecast. Florida Field is wide open, only the luxury boxes have cover over their heads.

I know what you are thinking, and the answer is yes. Rain gear at noon in the Swamp can be a very uncomfortable situation. And because of Fay, Gainesville will be water logged and primed for many hot and steamy greenhouse days.

Plan on being wet if not soaked in sweat on gameday.

  108. BigWave96744 August 20, 2008 2:54 pm

    Stephen,
If Dan “Iceman” Kelly got the Brent Rausch Look, would he then be the “Shaved Ice Man”

  109. Hawaiianbod August 20, 2008 2:56 pm

WM – good question. I remember back in my playing days that Leilehua was infamous for their chop blocks (because their line was short in stature).

  110. (Jesse) James August 20, 2008 2:56 pm

Jason…I’ll tell him….like I said, the term is commonly used now but it just sort of urks me….I mean, what the heck is the QB “shuffling” to the receiver???

WM – I think the proper term is cut blocking…but the slang term for it is chop blocking…which is more commonly used…but they mean the same thing….

WM – also had to laugh at the Jason/Kelli comment….MWAHAHAHAHAHA…BTW, we haven’t heard/seen Maryanne in a long time….

Howzit Koakane! Great minds think alike.

  125. Jason August 20, 2008 3:13 pm

The way I learned it, cut blocks are legal when made from the front. Chop blocks are illegal when made in the tackle box, from the side or back, or when the player being blocked is engaged with another player.

Either way, I think it should all be illegal. Even “legal” cut blocks can lead to injuries. The only time a player should be allowed to take another player’s legs out is if that player has the football.

And yeah, shuffle or shuttle make no sense. I guess I’ve gotten used to reading stories that say shuffle instead of shovel, cause from small-kid time I always said shovel. πŸ˜€

Posting this again. Anybody that would like to play fantasy football this year, I set up a league on yahoo for us tsaikos. We will have a live online draft on Sunday, August 24@ 5pm Hawaii/ 8pm Pacific (this coming Sunday). Would like a couple more people to sign up. So far it’s Me, Pauoa Boy, J, Homey, Jason, checkraze, and hawaiianbod. Gorg, if you haven’t gotten the invite let me know and I will send it again.
So if anymore people want to play email me at djmitcho at yahoo dot com. We can take up to 4 more people, but it must be an even number of people.

School St. too far from where I stay when home…but the mochi balls sound good. If they bought them from Moilili Mochi who went out of business, too bad. Their chi chi dango was da bomb. Waiola doesn’t have mochi balls.

Gotta stop watching the keeds play ball & go pack some moah.

aw’ryte just 3 more outs before going to the US championship game. gooooooooo waipio nuff said

  158. Garret August 20, 2008 4:02 pm

    Ralph,

I just tried to correct some of the incorrect information there, especially stuff from the trolls. One example when someone said that Hawaii would not make a bowl game this year:

Actually, Hawaii *will* make a bowl this year–Hawaii goes to the Hawaii Bowl as long it is bowl-eligible (and not going to a BCS Bowl).

I loved the Tomey years (before Arizona got him with a bigger contract and better facilities, sounds familiar) and Wagner had one amazing season (culminating in the Holiday Bowl). I’d rather not think about the coach before JJ…those were painful years.

I do agree that there are some bitter Hawaii fans posting here, but I think that most wish JJ well and are focused on the McMackin era at Hawaii.

    Another example:

LOL! I know that your post wasn’t directed towards me, but I couldn’t help but mention that Hawaii will be in a Bowl this season (I’m predicting 9-4, but even 7-6 gets Hawaii in).

  159. koakaneβ„’ August 20, 2008 4:11 pm

  164. FloridaTed August 20, 2008 4:16 pm

Man, those Hawaii boys sure know how to play and win. Another feather in Hawaiis cap. Great job, Waipio, only undefeated team left on the USA side, way to go.

  165. Garret August 20, 2008 4:16 pm

Someone was really upset that the Junior QB at SMU (who started the previous 2 seasons) was passed over for a true freshman QB (former UH commit Bo Mitchell). He went on a long rant and said this that set me off:

He did this at Hawaii when Tommie Chang was a True Freshman and they went 3-9. Of course, Chang eventually had a decent career, as should BLM but even Blue chip QB’s struggle as true freshman.

So I said this. Interesting parallel between Rolo as a Junior getting replaced by true Freshman Chang and how Rolo stuck it out and had a great Senior season. Later on I realized I should change the wording from “figuring out the offense” to “having the light click”:

Here are a few things wrong with your statement:

    1. Timmy Chang or Tim Chang. I don’t know who Tommie is.

    2. Chang did NOT start the season as the starting QB! JJ actually picked Rolovich (a Junior QB) to start the season…but he couldn’t figure out the offense and Hawaii lost to UTEP and *Portland State*. Only after those 2 losses did JJ start the true freshman QB.

    3. Record with the Junior QB starting: 0-2. Record with the true Freshman starting: 3-7, plus the following season Hawaii went 9-3. It isn’t like JJ expected to lose because he started a true freshman–the junior starter was 0-2 and lost to Portland State at home and Chang clearly made the team better!

    4. The Junior QB who was passed over for Chang got to start the last 9 games of the following season (Chang got hurt). He finally figured out the offense and had an amazing stretch of games: 3361 yards, 34TDs/9INTs, 8-1 record as a starter. He now has a coaching career (he’s the QB coach at Hawaii) because he stuck it out and proved himself instead of acting as if the starting spot was some type of right that JJ took away from him.

    J-Dog,

I think that rosters expand when school starts–I guess that would be Monday.

  179. Garret August 20, 2008 5:04 pm

    FloridaTed and onarock,

I don’t back everything JJ does and I respond to flamers from both the SMU and Hawaii sides. I do think that JJ is a lot better for SMU than their previous coach…the bar is set pretty low when that is the comparison! I think that Mack is the right fit to take UH to the next level of Hawaii recruiting and strength on D. With a few years of the type of recruiting UH is getting on D (Paipi and the rest of last year’s group and the commits already for 2009) and greater experience in Mac’s system, UH is going to be amazing on D…especially considering how well Mack did when he didn’t get to pick the recruits from last year’s team.

Earlier this week I had a lot of time because I was running some simulations that each take 15-30 minutes long…so I posted on this blog and some other places (I think I even posted on SH, which I normally just lurk on). When I have limited time I just post here and do my daily post of free play links on my blog. Sometimes I get so busy that I don’t post anywhere…but things are pretty calm now so I don’t have to stay offline.

  180. Jason August 20, 2008 5:09 pm

J-Dog: Just like Garret said, the rosters can expand when school starts, which is Monday.

  181. Garret August 20, 2008 5:10 pm

I found the SMU QB situation interesting, since it reminded me of the Chang-Rolo years. If Rolo hadn’t reacted the way he did when he was benched, with the character and determination he displayed, then he wouldn’t be the coach he is today. If he had transferred or pouted, he would not be a UH coach today…and I think he’ll be a great coach for the team!

And if Rolo had transferred or quit working hard, we would have missed out on his amazing stretch at UH in his final season…capping his career by demolishing BYU!

  182. Dennis Halloran August 20, 2008 5:11 pm

Garret, you have faster mouse than me but i’m learning and I have a lot more time!

  183. Ralph August 20, 2008 5:12 pm

    bighilofan2 see post 139 and 155 regarding cooke field…aloha

  184. J August 20, 2008 5:13 pm

    Thanks Garret,

Should have known just to email you. Not spending time in Vegas. Driving in tomorrow night, dropping someone at the airport on Friday and heading back to California. It’s been a long week. Drove to Montana and driving back early tomorrow morning.

  185. Garret August 20, 2008 5:13 pm

    Jason,

Thank you for the confirmation! With school here starting on Monday I had worried that I was mixing up the start dates for school. Faith starts Kindergarten on Monday, which is a big deal in my house!

The sad thing is that the rosters will expand and those players will finally get to practice…but a few days later the team will leave for their road trip and those new players will be left behind.

  186. gigi-hawaii Β© August 20, 2008 5:14 pm

Go, Rolo! His struggles as a young QB at UH were discussed in “Hawaii Warrior Football.” It took JJ’s near fatal car accident to wake him up. He promised God that if JJ survived, Rolo would turn his life around and become the kind of player everyone wanted him to be.

    Great book!

  187. Garret August 20, 2008 5:15 pm

    Dennis Halloran,

Sometimes I have a lot of time to kill, sometimes my boss doesn’t give me any free time. It all depends on deadlines and how the design stuff is going. This week so far I had a lot of free time!

  188. Hawaiianbod,

Gary Clark was my P.E. teacher and track coach, and Ray Higa (2 yards and a cloud of dust/3 and out) was varsity football coach. Aiea had a lot of defections in my year. Those defections wen transfer to Radford and brought them up a notch. A year later Radford won the Prep Bowl.

  189. Garret August 20, 2008 5:20 pm

    J,

Do you want me to look up a hotel in some city aside from Vegas? Let me know how many miles you want to be away from Vegas and in what direction.

  190. Hawaiianbod August 20, 2008 5:34 pm

King of Lur – Oh how I remember the Ray Higa years. My uncle, brother and cousins played for him. Those teams were HUGE, but how can you have a head coach who did not play the sport. In fact, my cousin(Mervin Wong) and his best friend (Gaylord Kuamoo – who later went on to USC) transferred to Radford.

  191. lab rat August 20, 2008 5:55 pm

Read somewhere that Army is going to run the Wishbone offense.

  192. Committed Road Warrior August 20, 2008 5:56 pm

    Hi Tsai-kos,

Just dropping in to say good evening before I head off to work. Fall Semester starts on Monday and the new roomie is moving in tomorrow so I’ll be up early to greet him.

Still awaiting my Oregon State tickets. Getting a little nervous since I still nevah get them yet. Just got to keep waiting, but hoping they’ll arrive in due time.

  193. Jason August 20, 2008 6:10 pm

Hawaiianbod: Don’t forget that Delbert Tengan never played football, either.

  194. jm2375 August 20, 2008 6:22 pm

Hi lab rat! Long time no post! I forget, are you a lab rat from UHS?

  195. Manoa August 20, 2008 6:24 pm

Gary Clark is a great guy. Haven’t seen him in years. He is a soft spoken guy, but a real student of coaching with a teacher style. Coaching was part time and he was a fireman.

  196. chawan_cut August 20, 2008 6:27 pm

    jason,
charlie weiss didn’t either. and he’s an “offensive genius”? he didn’t look so “genius” last year, with his top ten recruits. hmmm…. gotta wonder why they bash JJ and the run and shoot.
we’ll see what sort of numbers we put up this year for yards, and if they still bash us for our “system” offense. i’m pretty sure the criticism will also follow JJ to SMU. why don’t they question texas tech?

  197. Hawaiianbod August 20, 2008 6:31 pm

Jason – good point! However, at least DT knew what he was doing. I really think that you would make an excellent coach because you know your Xs and Os.

  198. homey ⑤ August 20, 2008 6:34 pm

I was in the 14, now I’m back to the 25!

What?! Stretch is NOT perfect. Who said?

Congrats to Waipio! See I miss everything…I forgot about the game and then my database was giving me trouble.

  206. Hawaiianbod August 20, 2008 6:48 pm

Aunty Gigi – actually, it’s the U.S. Championship Game.

  207. Garret August 20, 2008 6:49 pm

    bighilofan2,

Someone posted on SportsHawaii the protest letter you posted here, and another person did a nice analysis of that. Here is the post by Duster:

Thanks for posting a copy of Sadowski/Co-Ha’s protest letter (sent by its attorney, Karin Holma).

Sadowski’s protest does not have anything to do with the C-68FF contractor license classification. It is probably the most common basis for a protest – the failure of the bidder to list all subcontractors in accordance with the subcontractor listing law, HRS 103D-302(b).

It appears that RMY listed “Sports Turf Hawaii” as a subcontractor for the artificial surface installation, and there is no legal entity named “Sports Turf Hawaii” – it is merely a trade name. Even though Logan Hamocon, as an individual, registered it as a trade name, the registration expired and has since become the registrated trade name of a limited liability company that was apparently formed by Hamocon called “Sports Turf Hawaii, LLC.” Sadowski’s argument is that RMY’s bid should be rejected for failure to comply with the subcontractor licensing law because “Sports Turf Hawaii” is the trade name for “Sports Turf Hawaii, LLC” and that “Sports Turf Hawaii, LLC” has no contractors license.

Pretty technical, but logical argument. I checked with the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (“DCCA”) and Sports Turf Hawaii, LLC does not have a contractors license, and Logan Hamocon is only licensed as a sole proprietor (which I noted in another thread).

However, lookie, lookie what the DCCA Professional and Vocational Licensing database has for Hamocon:

    http://pvl.ehawaii.gov/pvlsearch/app?_a … %20HAMOCON

Yup. It shows that he has a valid contractors license as a sole proprietor, and as far as the Contractors License Board is concerned, “Sports Turf Hawaii” is his sole proprietorship’s trade name. And we know that Hamocon, the sole proprietor, registered the trade name before Sports Turf Hawaii, LLC did.

Sadowski makes a logical argument, but I think he loses.

  208. gigi-hawaii Β© August 20, 2008 6:49 pm

Rob, why were you 14 in the 1st place? what was its significance? haha

  209. gigi-hawaii Β© August 20, 2008 6:51 pm

Hawaiianbod, isn’t it still the Little League World Series game? I am confused.

  210. gigi-hawaii Β© August 20, 2008 6:52 pm

and then if Waipio wins the game on Saturday, it will proceed to the International game — is it on Monday?

  211. Rob25 August 20, 2008 6:52 pm

Wow the weekend of the Florida game I am going to be busy.

    Friday night – Wahine Volleyball
Saturday morning (at the butt crack of dawn) – Genji’s and FOOTBALL
    Saturday evening – Wahine Volleyball
    Sunday afternoon – Wahine Volleyball

It’s almost a perfect weekend! If both teams win out…it will definitely be perfect.

Has anybody been to Wahine practices? I wonder how the team is doing.

Congratulations to Rob De Mello and his wife!

  212. Rob25 August 20, 2008 6:55 pm

Gigi – 25 refers to my zipcode…when I am at home…I work in the 14 zipcode.

  216. gigi-hawaii Β© August 20, 2008 6:57 pm

  217. gigi-hawaii Β© August 20, 2008 6:58 pm

wow, Koakane is rich. He bought an iPhone.

  218. Garret August 20, 2008 6:58 pm

From that analysis it appears that the protest letter is not relying on the rule that Sadowski pushed that eliminated competition from people like Hamocon who don’t have that rare C-68FF license. I (and lots of other people who posted here and elsewhere) made that assumption, but I guess we were wrong. Instead, Sadowski is saying that Hamocon filled out the application wrong, listing Sports Turf Hawaii as a subcontractor for the bid when no such company exists and Sports Turf Hawaii, LLC does *not* have a contractor’s license.

So, it looks like Hamocon has the correct license needed for the contract, but he listed the wrong company name in the bid to UH. Protesting that the company named in the bid doesn’t actually exist is a valid point, and is very different than protesting that a company didn’t follow a made-up rule.

However, this is a pretty minor mistake…but it is a legally valid mistake to argue. I would say that Hamocon’s bid should win, but their mistake in filling out the application will force someone to rule on the matter, which could take time that UH doesn’t have since the field needs to be fixed right away!

  219. Hawaiianbod August 20, 2008 7:03 pm

Ainty Gigi – the winner of the U.S. Championship game then plays the International winner for the World Championship on Sunday.

Koakane, don’t let my blog fool you. We are struggling like everybody else. No forget, hubby’s boss treats us to dinners out. Besides, that is our ONLY source of entertainment. We don’t go to the movies, opera, concerts, night clubs, etc., that much.

Not even to EIS like you!

If I had an iPhone, I’d be so afraid of dropping it or losing it. Those buggers are expensive. I think Wreck paid $400 for an iTouch so an iPhone must cost even more.

  225. Kelli August 20, 2008 7:16 pm

Stretch, Jason, (Jesse) James, WarriorMojo, homey β‘€: You guys are so silly! And, I don’t think Jason is a creep. Stop torturing him. LOL. Ok, I’m going to make my tea and watch my Korean drama now. Hey, do I look like high maintenance? Wait, don’t answer that. Where did you here that, homey?

  226. Kelli August 20, 2008 7:22 pm

Oh gosh… My excuse: I’m tired.

    here = hear

And please, don’t give me a hard time about being a journalism major and making boo-boos like that. Believe it or not, my MOM was actually telling me about corrections that need to be made to my blog. Hey, I’m only human, right? And blogs don’t have editors. Ok, I’m done.

  227. Ralph August 20, 2008 7:25 pm

Garret the reason the protest does not question the “special license” is the fact that the lawyer is aware of the conflict of interest of the party she represents and in light of that, she had to come up with some other challenge….it’s as bad as complaining grammatical errors and non standard king’s English usage. Is he licenses? yes! and he completed Murakami stadium with the same license…Sadowski also lost that bid!

  228. gigi-hawaii Β© August 20, 2008 7:26 pm

    hey, Kelli —

Do you still have the large letter H showing on your hand? If not, how did you remove it?

  232. Garret August 20, 2008 7:46 pm

    Ralph,

The other Honolulu paper actually had to print a retraction because they said that Sadowski bid for the Murakami Stadium contract and was beaten out by Hamocon. Actually, Sadowski did *not* bid for the Murakami Stadium contract if their retraction was correct.

    Ope Howzit Gang…

IMHO – Coach Smith needs to stop tinkering with the dayum OLine and set it in stone like yesterday. Playing musical linemen a week before the season opener against Florida is asking to get killed. Need consistency throughout the Oline working together knowing there assignments, tendencies, strengths, weaknesses, so they can solidify and become dominant. Right now I’m concerned with the Oline and Brent Rausch, not getting good vibes yet, hope they come around quick!

gibu: Yeah, you better not say anything. But, thank you for saying I’m not high maintenance. πŸ™‚

Pauoa Boy: A dangerous heart throb, huh? Hahaha! You’re all hilarious. IMHO, I find the K-drama actors to be dangerous heart throbs. And then there’s the crazy middle-aged women that are just dangerous. Don’t be getting in their way when a Korean celeb is around.

  242. Kelli August 20, 2008 8:29 pm

And you can’t watch them without getting sucked into the music. I usually stop when school starts, but I catch up on weekends and breaks.

Pauoa Boy: You were in Korea? Oh, now I’m jealous. I have yet to go there. I need to take one of those K-drama tours to the filming locations. Yogurtland is the best! I love it!

I know in some dramas you can see their blemishes, so not everyone is perfect. They probably have good facials, cleansers and a healthy diet.

Pauoa Boy: Sheesh, all I want is a trip to Seoul. I heard the Incheon airport is really something. I gotta see that for my own eyes. Maybe I can catch a Rain concert if he ever goes back to singing. I was so disappointed when he canceled the Hawaii concert.

gibu: How smart of you to avoid attacks by my bff and I.

  276. Pauoa Boy August 20, 2008 9:12 pm

Kelli – Seoul is nice, but Korea as a whole wasn’t really impressed too much. Osan is good for shopping but the other places are kind of dirty and a little 3rd world looking. It’s a great place to visit though but I wouldn’t want to live there.

Hawaiianbod – For sure I have like six Fantasy Football teams right now, since all my friends wanted to make leagues too. Good thing is if I win each league that would be a total pot of about $700-$800 dollars. Wish the football season would start already…

She arrived a little late. But once inside, a chance encounter with Mrs. MacMackin got her autograph on a booklet. gigi and Betty may have got one too. She didn’t eat dinner so came straight home rather than wait in the refreshment lines. But she said it was a very good event.

I didn’t like this statement about Hawaii.

Hawaii is known as a laid-back, relaxing, perhaps downright lazy place to live and work. The Naval Academy β€” well, it can’t exactly be described the same way.

Typical mainland-ish arrogance mixed in with ignorance.

  289. Jason August 20, 2008 9:30 pm

Nasca has looked okay at the Z. They haven’t really run many plays for him in practice where he can get in the open field, so I can’t say he’s done anything spectacular. But he’s had a few catches, and he hasn’t done anything that I’d mark as a negative. It looks like the coaches are easing his way into the rotation. I have big hopes for him, cause he has some serious speed. I’m picturing Nasca as a Justin Colbert clone. πŸ˜€

gibu: So you were C/O 2004 too? Ah, so one year older than me. Cool, we need young people here too, to set these old folks in their place. πŸ˜‰

Nate had some good catches at the Warrior Bowl but unfortunately he met Mr. Jameel Dowling one on one if you know what I mean. However, Nasca was able to hold on to the ball following those solid hits.

Today’s practice was pretty ho-hum. Not much to report, really. Most of the time was spent talking to sj-macro, myki, and Kazz; meeting Larry Jones; looking for shade; and getting a smile from Princess Leila when I went to her tree. That smile will make any person’s day.

Funny moment of the day was when the D-Line decided to spend some time heckling Video Coordinator Ryan Biesemeyer who had his shirt off while on the crane overlooking the field.

If you can imagine the “Sexy Maaaannn” dance/song that “Fat Bastard” from the Austin Powers Movies then that was exactly what they were using to taunt him with.

Well.. I guess you had to be there for it to be funny.

  303. Garret August 20, 2008 9:52 pm

Miami’s coach was asked about the Reagan vs. Grigsby battle. If they are going to cut Reagan I hope that they do it as early as possible.

(On if Boomer Grigsby has won the starting fullback job)

“There’s still competition there at that position in a lot of ways. We talked about it before, whether its fullbacks, whether its tight ends, whatever it is, there’s competition there, him and Reagan (Mauia) and certainly the fullbacks versus the tight ends, that type of competition. There’s still a lot of things that have to be decided there so there’s more football to be played there.”

  304. Garret August 20, 2008 9:55 pm

This reporter thinks that BOTH Reagan and Grigsby could be cut since Miami might just keep an extra TE.

I don’t believe him when he says the revised depth charts aren’t accurately portraying where he’s ranking the players. For instance, he switched Boomer Grigsby over Reagan Mauia this week and today said there’s still plenty of football to be played and no decision has been made. What he really means is clearly Grigsby has beaten out Mauia, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t keep an extra tight end instead of Boomer, because he likes his TEs to play the h-back position. So that could mean Anthony Fasano, David Martin, Justin Peelle and Sean Ryan stick. Of the four, clearly Ryan should be on the bubble however he is one of this regime’s ‘guys.’

  305. Garret August 20, 2008 9:55 pm

    Update on Bess.

As for the receiver who has impressed Goodman the most, he didn’t even hesitate to say it was undrafted rookie Davone Bess, who I’ve predicted for weeks will either be on the Dolphins 53-man roster, or make the practice squad if he survives being cut.

“He’s got great body control. Runs great routes. He has a little bit of Az Hakim in him,” said Goodman, who played with Hakim in Detroit. “He’s not the fastest guy, but he’s quick and can stop on a dime. He has great body control and runs pretty good routes.”

Whatever Verne Oda said last 7/22 in the odda paper about the conflict of interest situation, and what Hamocon didn’t need when he asked 2x, and with Joe Kindrich and Sadowski and da odda fren on da board, its clear there is now a conflict of interest, definitely an appearance of impropriety in any of them having any say in anything that would have any effect on the ongoing Sadowski controversy and the Ching Cooke Field fix.

Sadowski should resign from the Contractor’s Board, and Joe Kindrich should disqualify himself from participating in Friday’s meeting on the subject of synethetic field turf licensing.

To me, both men lost credibility when Sadowski filed his challenge. Duster’s comments in post 207 by Garrett is a great refresher on the history of Sadowski using his position and frienships for self aggrandizement, and Hamocon trying to follow the rules as told to him by the Executive Officer for the Contractor’s Board.

No sense just cooking Sadowski’s beans.. Grind em up…..

We got an interesting call from the Principal of the school that Faith will be starting Kindergarten at. The Principal said that Faith is apparently *really* ready for Kindergarten–she probably got a report from the teachers because Faith went to 4 weeks of pre-K camp at the school.

So, instead of putting Faith in regular Kindergarten, they are putting her in a class that is half Kindergarteners and half First graders…I’ve never heard of such a class before! Faith probably got picked because she can read, write lots of words and even letters (I trained her on thank you letters and weekly postcards to her grandparents), do math, puzzles, and even sudoku.

The really cool thing about the class is that they apparently assign really good teachers to it and the teacher/student ratio is 1 to 8! Faith will be happy when she starts next week. She has been looking forward to Kindergarten for a long time…she wants to go to the school for bigger kids. She absolutely loves that playground–she taught herself the monkey bars and actually did it over and over until she got blisters on both hands!

The first home game that I will have missed for the last nine years will be the Nevada game. I think that it will be worth it because I will be going to Austin TX to see Frank before they ship out to Kuwait and then Iraq.

    Aloha, Tsaikos.

Another posting from scouting Gator land. Click on my name to read a thread on the GatorCountry Swampgas forum described as “A little about this years Hawaii team” Shows some limited knowledge of what is coming towards them, and includes some who feel that we will provide a good early test for them. Most expect that Hawaii will neither challenge their defense or be able to contain their offense.

    Typical is one comment:
“I expect Hawaii to attack us offensively a lot like Florida Atlantic or Troy did, with a lot of high percentage, safe, short passes. They’ll try us long a couple of times early to see if they can steal the big play quick and get some momentum, but if they don’t get that, it’s going to be a long day for the Warriors.”

Here’s a post from the Swamp of interest to the Tsaikos going to the Florida game who are trying to figure out what to wear to the game. It reports that Coach Urban Meyer has joined with an anti-skin cancer campaign to ask all the fans to wear white to the Aug. 30 game!! A link to a University of Florida web site in the posting indicates that the first 10,000 fans to the event will get free white hats (Click on my name to access the link)

The original poster thinks that a stadium full of fans in white “could really intimidate UH’s team–and especially their new starting QB who has only played in front of 9,000 people before…”

    LOL!!
As one of the responders notes several posts into the threads, Hawaii will be wearing white for the game.

And as a campaign against skin cancer from sun exposure, this is a really stupid idea. White t-shirts provide the least amount of protection against sun burn. The experts always advise wearing a dark colored shirt to block the sun, so there are likely to be a lot of burnt Florida fans at the end of this game.

Largartos says “They are trash talking Gators and Tebow. (Warrior Message Boards) These folks must be in-bred relatives of those folks from Athens” but he doesn’t provide any links to what boards he is talking about, and the following responders report that they can’t find any trash talking going on. Weirdly, the thread ends with a “Hawaii” fan named Rangertrechin posting:

I guess insomnia is a good thing sometimes. This late night lurk gave me a few laughs. Thanks!!! Oh, asking Kelli out, however it was tried, just shows you have good taste. Like her writing. As for looks, I don’t notice such superficial things, but it’s safe to say it’s O-ficial that her looks are super.

Oh, sorry I haven’t visited in a while. Seems as though I’m really missing out.

    Take care everyone!!!

Oh, by the way, Kelli I really do like your blog too. I must applaud you: hear here!

Gotta love the English language with all its identical sounding words (I think their’s a word for that). I’ve done it to many times myself two be critical of ewe. Wear does anyone get the nerve to think there above such common errors. I guest its important to no that the reel challenge is getting the message across. I don’t think anyone’s reputation is at steak with such a simple mistake.

It’s a little late now, but I should have told Kelli about the K-Drama club in the library. They even took a trip to Korea to meet some of their favorites.

  354. Ogre August 21, 2008 1:09 am

I am going to have to check out these Korean dramas one day. Been hearing about them for years now. They should put the reruns on late at night instead of these infomercials.

Something’s in the Jamaican water that makes their athletes run so fast.

ST: who looks like the favorite(s) at Kick returner & Punt returner?

  357. Kekoa (iPhone) August 21, 2008 1:29 am

Al – The menu sez pig feet…it was in fact the ‘short shank’ A rather large part at that!

We also witnessed the arrival of 4 young ladies from the “dark” side who are quite familiar with a certain young Tsaiko.

Perhaps you’ve met them before Al…(?))

Garret if your thinking about a Blackberry, check out AT&T, I had to get a new phone the other day and noticed that they had the top of the line for $129.00 after the rebate, although it was with a two year contract also, but still 129 is not a bad price.

Before people in Hawaii begin to wake up, I wanted to ask if anyone else has IPTV from Hawaii, or is considering it for the games. I am. I think I saw somebody mention the lack of programming before so this deal should help with that.
