Break? What break?

The Warriors were back on Cooke/Ching field this morning, participating in unsupervised workouts.

(Sorry, but my camera battery died, so I can’t upload the photos.)

* * *

Offensive lineman Clayton Laurel has a fractured right fibula. He will miss six weeks of training.

* * *

The Warriors won’t announce the 105-player roster for training camp for at least another month. But offensive lineman Steven Ikaika Rodenhurst and running back Kimo Alo have been told they will be invited to re-join the team Aug. 24, the first day of UH’s fall semester, when the roster limits are lifted.

* * *

A sight that might mean something: Lametrius Davis worked out with the cornerbacks.

A sight that means nothing: Inoke Funaki and Tuika Tufaga worked out with the linebackers.

* * *

Here’s the difference between karma and bachi.
Karma: Two years ago, in the midst of a budget crisis, a UH official received a bonus. A few days later, a foul ball struck the windshield of the official’s car.
Bachi: Your blog host  wrote about that incident, making fun of the official’s bad fortune. Yesterday, a foul ball hit his car.

    ST

even if they don’t announce the 105 man roster, will the players get notified or are they left ‘hanging’ until further notice? doesn’t seem fair to them, does it?

  5. Bulla April 30, 2009 11:22 am

    haha,

Too bad about Clayton Laurel–I hope his recovery goes well.

  8. Garret April 30, 2009 11:25 am

    Bulla,

I think that Mac said that the players would be notified this week during meetings with their position coaches. So, I don’t think they are going to be left hanging.

However, the official announcement might not be made for awhile because maybe some slots might be freed up due to academic or injury reasons. Warriors could be added to the fall camp roster to fill those slots before the official announcement comes out.

  9. Stephen Tsai April 30, 2009 11:25 am

Most have been notified. Some are conditional. LIke, say, if a roster spot opens, they’ll be invited to training camp.

An article mentioning Jake Ingram just popped up. This guy was a long-snapper in the NFL and his son is now a long-snapper for the Giants.

On the Patriots using a sixth-round draft pick on a long snapper (Hawaii’s Jake Ingram), a perhaps underappreciated specialty role that DeOssie performed and that his son now fulfills for the Giants.

“Bill Belichick always had Lonie Paxton, who was one of the best in the game. (Paxton signed a free-agent contract this off-season to follow McDaniels to Denver.) That was one basic headache he could cross off the list. He never had to worry with Lonie Paxton about a bad snap. It just wasn’t going to happen. So that’s one facet of the game that is taken care of, and that’s a great thing as a coach. You can put more time, energy and effort into concentrating on other things.”

    ST,

A foul ball from the softball stadium ALMOST hit my car when I was leaving. I had no clue why, the game was over but I stopped in time to see a large yellow/orange-ish object drop a foot in front of my car. It bounced up high enough for me to see it was a softball.

Maybe the Nevada team sensed the “cursing” I was screaming in my head directed towards them?

Then they lose their home game to us while they were ranked in the Top 25… SWEET!!!

Dirty Commish is super stoked to see Hurricane Inoke at RB this coming season. However, would it be too much on his frame to put on like 10lbs of muscle to absorb some of the pounding he might be taking?

Dirty Commish also hopes the Leon If Loving You is Wrong I Don’t Wanna Be Wright-Jackson is 100% and can stay healthy this season. Would be a shame for such a highly touted player to end with a fizzle.

It’s been a while since we’ve heard to seen Jim Bolla’s name in the news and I heard a song on the radio last night that I haven’t heard in a while that reminded me of him.

No it’s not “Sledgehammer” from Peter Gabriel.

This song is called “Face Down” from Red Jumpsuit Apparatus:

Hey girl you know you drive me crazy
one look puts the rhythm in my hand.
Still I’ll never understand why you hang around
    I see what’s going down.

Cover up with make up in the mirror
tell yourself it’s never gonna happen again
you cry alone and then he swears he loves you.

DO YOU FEEL LIKE A MAN?
    WHEN YOU PUSH HER AROUND?
DO YOU FEEL BETTER NOW AS SHE FALLS TO THE GROUND?
Well I’ll tell you my friend, one day this world’s going to end
as your lies crumble down, a new life she has found.

A pebble in the water makes a ripple effect
every action in this world will bear a consequence
If you wade around forever you will surely drown
    I see what’s going down.

I see the way you go and say your right again,
    say your right again
    heed my lecture

DO YOU FEEL LIKE A MAN?
    WHEN YOU PUSH HER AROUND?
DO YOU FEEL BETTER NOW AS SHE FALLS TO THE GROUND?
Well I’ll tell you my friend, one day this world’s going to end
as your lies crumble down, a new life she has found.

Face down in the dirt she says, this doesn’t hurt she says I finally had enough..

Face down in the dirt she says, this doesn’t hurt she says I finally had enough..

One day she will tell you that she has had enough
    its coming round again.

So discussions about the Bull Chit System (BCS) and a playoff are underway. Heard Boise State AD is in attendance as well as others to help out the little guys. Also, heard on ESPN some of the discussion matter of why this and why that, and basically what it comes down to is money like always. The rich want to get richer and the poor guys, well screw em? Anyway, I can kind of see a point they’re trying to make about a playoff system costing schools a lot of money by flying the team to wherever, etc… but still that’s crap. Boise State, Utah, and even us should have had a crack at the Championship game going undefeated during the regular season. I hope they get this resolved, got my fingers crossed…

Someone asked about info on Junior day at UH.

Read following by blueblood on last Saturday’s 1st annual Junior day at UH. Interesting comments especially on Coach Mac telling panel of players to be honest about the program and him at open forum Q&A with players parents.

    blueblood wrote:
I had a chance to go as a guest with Clinton Wise from Kapolei, Class of 2010- (LB/FB) and believe it or not this 1st annual JR day was a great success in my opinion. Coach Mack and Coach Tuioti put on a great program for all Warrior hopefulls. These players that attended were selected for evaluation from UH coaches. In the beggining, they had guest speakers such as the AD, the Chancelor, the coaches, past alumni athletes, and business owners who were alumni players. They all promoted UH and why the best local products should stay home, and did a great job at that. Then they took the prospects into their perhaps future position coaches mtg rooms, while the parents stayed with a panel of current Warriors and had a open forum Q&A style. This panel was told by Coach Mack to be honest about the program and to be honest about him. I guess it was an opportunity for parents to ask the hard questions. Then prospects and parents did a tour of their facilities, and was told of the soon coming upgrades. Then parents and propects watched a highlight video of the program. Then finally had lunch with the coaches. Then finally the prospects and their parents met at the stadium and was led on the field to watch pre-game warm-ups, then lead to their seats before the Warrior Bowl started. All in all it was a great day because the UH staff including those in the background of the program, did a excellant job in being pro-active. Coach Mack and his staff was more than hospitible. Coach Macks emphasis was on graduation and how that is a must on his watch. Plus to at Manoa, and just by walking around you could see prospects already lining up UH as their first choice. I think several prospects were offered that morning, but don’t quote me on that. I overheard propects and their parents talking. We’ll just wait till UH makes that announcements, all I can say it was some LB’s from the Westside. Anyways I’m rambling, but the question was asked, so I tried to answer the best way.

  63. Ralph April 30, 2009 4:50 pm

off topic- a man beats another man to death by stomping on his head leading to traumatic brain damage and death and the verdict is a misdemeanor in the third degree- up to one year in prison. the victim urinated on suspects truck, so if someone gives another person the stink eye is it okay to beat him to death because he dissed your aura…

Re-Here’s what I think about Coach Mack’s decision of delaying, (for one month) publically, of announcing the players who made the 105-player roster for training camp.

Absolutely, I think this is the best decision, and it rates an A+… and I’m probably thinking it’s textbook on the collegiate level. Very thoughtful, classy and sensible.

Put yourselves in the shoes of the players that aren’t going to be invited back to training camp. These are the players Coach Mack is thinking about when he delays for one month of his announcement of who’s in and who’s out, IMO. The coaches having already made their decisions and the players not being invited back have already received the bad news, but why it’s not being announced to the public is of yet is great for the non returning player’s psyche–let me explain further.

Trimming the roster, the coach is resigned to doing one of two things. He could have dropped a bombshell two or three days after the spring scrimmage of announcing which players that were going to be invited back. Or he could have delayed a month of announcing his decision, which gives the player not invited back some self preservation, where they can absorb the shock, tell their friends and relatives that they’re not invited back and a period of time to heal their wounded ego and pride.

Of the former this what you’d expect from an NFL coach, where there isn’t any crawl space for empathy and sensitivity. This is understandable. For when it’s time in stream lining a roster everything is cut and dry, straightforward.

Of the later, which I applaud Coach Mack for doing by delaying his decision and announcement to the public. For there is some allowable crawl space, and where showing this sensitivity towards the players that aren’t going to make the roster it gives the deflated players some respect in how they cope with this grief.

Slamming the door, doing it with an exclamation point and announcing of who’s in and who’s out right away would have been ill conceived and it would have probably affected the returning players, too. Even the public would have picked up on this.

Years from now what comes to the player’s minds that weren’t invited training camp–is that the Coach made this transition with a lot of sensitivity towards them.

    Here’s one:

    http://nutrition.ucdavis.edu/faculty/greenwood.html

“…Dr. Greenwood previously served with distinction as Chancellor of UC Santa Cruz, a position she held from July 1996 to April 2004. Major accomplishments as Chancellor include: launching the campus´ first professional school, the Jack Baskin School of Engineering; fostering the establishment of the NSF Center for Adaptive Optics with subsequent support from the Moore Foundation, increasing the number of academic programs by 52%, from 63 to 96, including a 41% increase in graduate programs; opening the first new residential colleges in the UC system in 30 years; hiring 250 new faculty members; raising morale, more than doubling extramural research support; constructing nearly one million assignable square feet in academic buildings for the arts, the sciences and engineering; establishing a UC Silicon Valley Center at Moffett Field and engaging with NASA Ames in developing the nation´s first NASA University Affiliated Research Center, the largest competitively awarded contract ($330 million) at the University of California up to that time. In addition, under her leadership the campus raised more in private donations than the previous total for the campus´ entire history.”

At the time, Dynes argued she needed the higher salary to cover the cost of buying a home near UC’s headquarters in downtown Oakland. Like other UC chancellors, Greenwood previously received free housing on campus.

In addition, her total compensation turned out to be higher than was publicly announced at the time, The Chronicle has learned. In addition to her salary, UC gave her a $125,000 relocation incentive to move the 70 miles from Santa Cruz to Oakland. That was in addition to $17,950 for temporary housing, $9,527 for moving expenses and a low-interest loan to buy a condo in Oakland. …”

First Texas shut down high school sports due to the swine flu worries, now Alabama had to do it also.

Alabama officials have shut down all high school athletic events following the discovery of likely cases of swine flu in Huntsville.

“Right now, we are being advised by our Medical Advisory Committee to shut down all activities until further notice,” said Steve Savarese, executive director of the Alabama High School Athletic Association. “We hope to be able to resume activities by next Tuesday, but right now we must study the situation and take it one day at a time.”

School officials say 53,000 students are out of school due to concern over the virus, and dozens of schools were closed to be sanitized. With 16 confirmed cases of swine flu in Texas, Gov. Rick Perry announced a disaster declaration Wednesday for the entire state.

The Dolphins are looking to discover an undrafted free agent gem like they got last year with Bess.

A year ago, you probably didn’t know Bess. What NFL teams knew about him — a short receiver out of a pass-heavy Hawaii offense that piled up numbers higher than he stood — was just enough for them to not draft Bess. The Dolphins signed him and got a six-game starter, who was used on punt returns and caught 54 passes for 554 yards, third on the team.

And Bess became a starter after Greg Camarillo sustained a season-ending knee injury after pulling in 55 receptions for 613 yards in 11 games. Nobody found Camarillo worth drafting, either. His career began as a rookie free agent signed by San Diego in 2005.

”We felt great about Davone last year, but you never know about the college free agent business,” Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland said.

“The make-up is most important in that regard. Trying to get the right kind of guy that will be successful in this program and that want to be good and want to be coached and developed. That is what we try to instill in those guys when we sign them.”

Technically speaking, a cathedral is a church presided by a bishop which usually means Catholic, Angelican, etc.

Dr. Schuller, as far as I know, is not a bishop and the name cathedral may be just used to be a p.r. thing to make the church look important. (It is an impressive building in any event).

lakesidegt — OK. I think Peaches has the songs in her iTunes library and I have a couple in my iTunes. But I was serious about d1shima and Russ probably doing a good rendition in karaoke… 🙂

JM2375: In Skagway, you might consider the White Pass railroad ride and in Ketchikan, you can just walk around the place or take the airplane ride to the Misty Fjords – the latter is a bit pricey but interesting and the floatplane does land in the Fjord itself. But the town is an easy walk though with a bunch of shops. Kids may enjoy it too. In Juneau, the Governor says that you can see Russia from there but most people will probably go to the Mendenhall Glacier and go out on the boat trip to spot whales.

It is easier and more convenient to go on tours through the ship BUT all of those places have tour people right by the dock and is much more inexpensive. Carry antivertigo medication – though the ship people can supply them and, if you suspect you need it, take one a couple hours before boarding the ship though the inland passage is fairly calm. And wash your hands frequently – they have dispensers at all the dinning areas!

For guys mentioning former UH Rainbow Baseball shortstops, let’s not forget Eric”Toku” Tokunaga who could field, hit & lay down a clutch textbook bunt
(a lost art) with the best of them-he could also play second base as well. I had the privilege of taking some classes with he, Wade Mauricio, Curt “Tank” Watanabe & other players with great attitude & who were very humble as well.
