Blue period

One of my favorite tombstones reads: “I told you I was sick.”

Who really knew BYU was serious about leaving the MWC to go independent in football and transplanting its other sports into another conference? But BYU did just that in reaching an agreement with the West Coast Conference. Of course, in the process it deflated the WAC and MWC …

Will BYU stay put? Right up until the Big 12 or Pac-10 calls. But if  you’re the WCC, a few dates with the super model is better than none at all.

* * * * *

For UH, there’s that slight glitch in the plan of going independent in football and  joining the Big West in other sports: The Big West hasn’t extended any invitation.

UH is the guy outside trying to bribe the bouncer.

Could UH eventually receive an invitation? Sure. But the buy-in will be hefty. UH just doesn’t have enough leverage.

* * * * *

Enough of that. Back to football.

The Warriors have their depth chart and game plans in place for tomorrow’s opener. If left wideout Rodney Bradley can go the distance, then Darius Bright is on a need-to-play basis.

It should be interesting if slotback Greg Salas will be used as a defensive back in certain situations. I don’t think it’s necessary since freshman Bubba Poueu-Luna probably could fill that role. But if it came down to Salas being needed in that role, it will mean the game is on the line late in the fourth quarter.

The WCC will enjoy their extra ESPN TV money while BYU is in their conference.

The Big 12 is expected to add 2 teams in a couple of years (TV deal will be up and Colorado and Nebraska will have paid their exit fees).

I’m officially done talking about conference realignment until after the USC game is over.

Using Salas at slot, punt returner, and DB might be a tough load…but Salas would probably just be used at DB on hail mary and other long yardage situations on D so it wouldn’t be too much for him.

okay so let’s talk football as the host suggests.

for me, i have been watching the university of hawaii since the old honolulu stadium days when they played anybody who could afford the trip. some came from places and campuses we never heard of before.

i continue to watch them even against all odds like many are saying tomorrow’s contest will be. win, lose, or draw nothing gets the blood going more than to watch the home team.

and i go because, just in case we pull off the mission impossible, i was there to witness and feel that exhilaration that can only be experienced in person.

Lane Kiffin explained why USC won’t have a walk through at Aloha Stadium or any other road stadium.

USC will practice today, but Kiffin continues to put his stamp on the program with his plan to bypass the stadium walk-through that was a staple the day before road games under former coach Pete Carroll.

“It’s a little bit different approach; It’s a little bit tighter,” Kiffin said of handling the run-up to games. “That doesn’t mean it’s better by any means. The last approach won 34 straight games and seven straight conference championships.

“But you have to be yourself.”

i would never use salas on defense. i think we have enough depth and talent. however, that is not the reason.

playing on offense especially slotback for the university of hawaii. you are accustomed to getting hit and prepare yourself for the hit and the like.

however, there is a huge difference in getting hit and delivering a hit. do you risk your impact player? has he praticed hitting in the open field these days?

    …this is not intramural football.

  21. Garret September 1, 2010 9:07 am

USC’s starting OL will have a total of *3* practices together before the UH game. I’m sure that the defensive package that Dave Aranda sets up will try to maximize confusion with USC’s OL…that OL might not be a cohesive unit for a few weeks, so UH may be able to exploit that.

I don’t think that I’ve ever heard of a team as high-profile as USC that is so thin at OL. Holmes will start at G against UH despite his neck injury.

It took nearly a month and more than 25 practices, but USC on Monday finally achieved a milestone of sorts when its projected starting offensive line finally practiced together for an extended period.

The line, and how it will react to game conditions, is one of the Trojans’ biggest mysteries heading into Thursday’s opener at Hawaii.

To stave off injuries, USC conducted full-contact tackling drills only once early in training camp. So offensive linemen have not practiced cut blocking or played at full speed.

Lewis, who plays all positions except center, is rounding into shape after sitting out most of training camp because of a groin injury.

Holmes, a backup in three games last season, remains limited while nursing a neck condition.

Kalil was slowed by minor injuries early in camp but has locked down the spot where he started last December in the Emerald Bowl.

The WAC announced the details of the scheduling deal with BYU. Utah State isn’t part of this because they already have BYU scheduled. I don’t know why only Idaho is getting BYU for basketball.

With BYU declaring that it will be an independent in the sport of football effective with the 2011 season, five WAC teams – Hawai‘i, Idaho, Louisiana Tech, New Mexico State and San Jose State – will provide the Cougars with five games in the 2011 season and four games in the 2012 season.

For the 2011 season, WAC schools will host two games against BYU, while three teams will travel to Provo. In 2012, BYU will play two games in WAC stadiums and host two WAC teams in Provo. Specific opponents and dates will be announced in the future.

Last night on the Call the Coach segment with Greg McMackin, he said that UH has 14 football commits for next year. It is very interesting because no newspapers or internet news has said that UH has any commits for next year. Now, maybe I’m all wet or Coach Mac is not telling everthing, but I read the Star Advertiser every day and check the web sites every day about football recruiting. In fact, UH has no verbal commitments announced.

Conversely, Boise St. has 11 commitments, SMU has 18 and all WAC school have at least one commit. Now, maybe UH does have 14 commitments but they are not announcing it or the recruits have not come out and actually said in public that they are commiting to UH. I really think that prospects are on the fence with UH because of the all the turmoil going on with the WAC, MWC, etc. Uncertainty breeds insecurity. This is not good. Jim Donovan, I hope, realizes it and must make some hard decisions on the future of UH programs.

With a number of true and redshirt freshman possibly playing this year quality minutes I hope it’s a good sign that these players are showing that the coaches have done a good job in evaluating the talent level to be good players, such as Sampson and Hardy-Tuliau. What is the evaluation of Kody Afusia and Dee Maggitt?

What football players are not playing this year, but are slated to be grayshirts for 2011?

Returning to yesterday’s comments about the University administration’s support of intercollegiate athletics.

For starters – the people who are UH administrators TODAY are different than they were three years ago. The current System president, MRC Greenwood, came on board just a little over a year ago.

The Chancellor began working for UH in August, 2007, and had no say in policies passed prior to her employment.

Jim Donovan began his job as head of the Department of Athletics in March, 2008.

Of the 15 members on the Board of Regents, only two of them were on the Board in the fall of 2007 when UH had its winning streak.

Click http://www.hawaii.edu/admin/regents/index.php?regent=fukunaga to read their full biographies.

There is a new attitude at UH-Manoa towards higher education in general, but combining the huge revenue shortfalls the entire state is facing along with the conference turmoils is going to make it very, very difficult to do anything but react.

As for raising funds to support UH’s athletics programs, it will be very difficult to get something going quickly – even though people are already scrambling to get things covered.

Remember,System President Greenwood has turned over the management oversight of the Department of Athletics to the Chancellor’s office.

I STRONGLY urge that people who have concerns about the future of UH-Manoa intercollegiate athletics programs to get involved in the decision-making process. Contact Keith Amemiya, Interim Executive Administrator and Secretary of the Board of Regents

    2444 Dole Street, Bachman Hall, Room 209, Honolulu, HI 96822. Tel (808)956-8213;

    fax (808)956-5156; email bor@hawaii.edu

Another option would to “hire” someone with extensive experience working with the Legislature and others who can help you be much more effective in having an impact on UH athletics in general. This is what the “Big Boys & Girls” do when dealing with the “Big Muckamuckas.”

HTA has members with Aston and Ritz Carlton Hotel Chain but UH is partnered with Marriott and Outrigger, can they work together to benefit all of Hawaii through sponsorship and media blitz of UH football. AD Mc Namara wants all UH activities to utilize only the corporate sponsors that affiliate with UH, and that is the Marriott and the Outrigger, so will the people at HTA want to spend their money to benefit only two hotel chains. Just asking? Where’s Bulla’s better half and PowderPuff?

  64. Garret September 1, 2010 11:25 am

Karl Benson’s press conference today explained why Idaho is the only WAC school to get a home-and-home scheduling deal with BYU for basketball. Idaho is not getting a home game with BYU–they will play in Provo in 2011 and have no home game with BYU (probably because their football stadium is too small). So, they play a football and basketball game at BYU and just get a basketball game in return with no money thrown in…Idaho got the worst deal from this.

Benson said that WAC teams will *not* get any money for traveling to BYU for a football game because of the home-and-home arrangement. Since BYU is taking BSU’s place in the schedule for 2011, BYU should be coming to Aloha Stadium in 2011.

I’ve read that BYU’s game at La Tech will be held in Shreveport, not Ruston.

  65. Garret September 1, 2010 11:26 am

A home game with BYU in 2011 would be an *excellent* way to fill the last puka in the schedule.

UH had a deal with BYU for 2012 and 2013, but no BYU scheduled for 2011. I’m hoping that the BYU game in 2011 will be at Aloha Stadium (that would give UH a lot of money), especially since BYU isn’t paying any WAC team to play at their stadium in this deal.

My favorite tombstone says, “Tombstone Original Supreme” pizza.

My main concern with Salas is that he will be gassed by returning punts and running route after route on offense. Now there’s mention of him possibly on defense in certain situations? I’d rather he be at 100% on offense. We’re all looking for him to have a banner year. Maybe because this might be his only chance on national TV to show what he has, against a BCS team on top of that.

#42… Hank… I remember a post by WDoc maybe a week or two ago concerning a sort of task force between the Capital and HTA in trying to figure out some joint advertising plan. If I recall correctly, it was something that had taken place a while ago. I hope someone will add in the details or correct me if I’m wrong… but the players may have included UH, Airlines, Hotels, the HTA, and some Legislators. With all of the recent changes to the collegiate landscape, and nothing solidly in place yet concerning UH’s future, I’d guess any future planning must be put on hold for the moment, until we know exactly what’s going on.

Garret… please keep your posts coming! I really appreciate the information you dig up for us. I miss those 5-off-topic posts as a break in action.

I really believe in JD and whatever avenue he takes us. I will trust him that he looked into the different avenues and his decision would be the best for UH. Yes, I am tired of Benson, but after hearing what the WAC was planning, Benson had the right idea but maybe his process was screwed up. But maybe a change is needed too.

  86. bb September 1, 2010 12:13 pm

Benson can’t hire armed guards for the life of him.

They will vow to protect him throughout the game. But when Hawaii has a lead they will ask if they can get a Churro and never return.

  87. Pomai September 1, 2010 12:15 pm

#58 Steve – it is not up to the AD’s it’s the presidents who run the show.

Know what I don’t care where we end up, I’m still going to the games, rooting for the boys, an watching all the away games. This is our team, our boys who are playing their hearts out, not the WAC, MWC, ESPN or any of the other money changers. Question is are you a fan or not, sorry no gray area, so either your on the wagon or your not pretty simple if you ask me.

  88. bb September 1, 2010 12:17 pm

Throughout all this WAC stuff I’ve learned:

Never invite Karl Benson to a surprise party.

His kids know what they are getting for Xmas by Halloween.

  89. chopsueyboy September 1, 2010 12:18 pm

    Pomai

    I’m with you,

as long as the men & women of University of Hawaii are playing,

    they’ll have my support

  90. papajoe2 September 1, 2010 12:18 pm

#88 Pomai. Strong, but good. Will back up UH whatever or wherever.

  91. Steve September 1, 2010 12:18 pm

Only a true Hawaii fan cares more about the athletic department, then just a football game, or team.

  92. Anonymous September 1, 2010 12:20 pm

Don’t forget to turn the lights out when you leave the WAC.

  93. Ralph September 1, 2010 12:20 pm

UH should extend their contracts with Army and Navy, ask AD Haden for a long term USC deal, and reaffirm BYU’s commitment to a long term deal by signing a contract, and now JD should look for a few more teams to extend or add games in a proactive move in case UH goes independent. He needs to start locking in long term deals now rather than after announcing independence when the WAC folds.

  94. Pomai September 1, 2010 12:23 pm

Steve if their where no student athletes then there would be no athletic department. It’s all about the kids, nothing else, an they are getting screwed.

  95. Steve September 1, 2010 12:27 pm

#95 I agree with you there, Pomai, about the kids, and yes, they are getting screwed. They have committed to UH for at least 4 years, but are not getting the same commitment back.

  96. Ralph September 1, 2010 12:27 pm

UH vs USC on ESPN on 5 pm and 9 pm rebroadcast. Great exposure for UH and Hawaii Nei. Wait a minute, that’s 11 pm and 3 am on the east coast, hopefully most of our tourists are coming from west of the Mississippi and Canada. 🙂

  97. Shoko September 1, 2010 12:28 pm

I think extending contracts with Navy and Army is doable considering the large military population in Hawaii.

  98. NCAA September 1, 2010 12:30 pm

Many on this blog should be on an advisory committee for Mr. J.D. You must think his mind is just a brand new coloring book that just needs some filling in with crayons.

  99. Steve September 1, 2010 12:31 pm

All of this WAC thing can be worked out real simply. Even exchange, Fresno and Nevada, for San Diego St. and UNLV, between WAC and MWC. LA Tech, for UTEP, WAC and C-USA. San Diego St. would gladly make the switch, so would UTEP.

  100. madeinhawaii September 1, 2010 12:33 pm

How come the fans don’t blame themselves?

We could start by saying things like… I don’t wanna be an also ran.. I don’t want our ship to sink… so…

Let’s all raise the season ticket prices and donations to USC type levels… let’s all raise the soon to be activity fee… let’s all vote for luxury boxes and BCS type parking fees… yeah… then with all that extra moolah, let’s upgrade our campus facilities and programs… and really become the BCS busters we want to be…

Because quite frankly, I don’t know if the blame is all Benson’s… how much freedom does he have to think outside of the box? How long from the time he comes up with an idea to the time of implementation is there after all the members have had time to mull it over? Does he ever act on his own? Or does he need license to act from all the schools?

If we need to find blame… let’s all get enraged at the Fresno, Nevada, and Boise games!

  101. HawaiiMongoose September 1, 2010 12:34 pm

Independence isn’t an option unless the Big West conference is willing to accept UH as a non-football member. There’s no indication (yet) that they are.

  102. madeinhawaii September 1, 2010 12:34 pm

How many fans turned out for the Navy game last year? Is there enough to up the ante? I think a bunch of tickets were free for military personnel.

  103. Ralph September 1, 2010 12:35 pm

Anyone want to help the student athlete, you can, on September 18, at 9:30 am the softball coaches and players will do a make over at their stadium. They will do cleaning, power washing, painting and fixing the field, all in preparation for recruits visiting the following week. The softball program lone asset is the stadium, they don’t have the amenities of the SEC with a club house or on field locker rooms to show the girls, so that’s what needs to be up to par during the girls visit. It is also game day, Colorado on ppv, but you can always get a subscriber to tape it for you. Aloha

  104. Igloo September 1, 2010 12:35 pm

with BYU leaving the MWC, did anyone notice there’s now 10 in the MWC and 6 in the WAC. How about a new Western Mega Conference. I’ve got a West Div (Boise, Idaho, Hawaii, Nevada, UNLV, Fresno St, San Diego St) and East Div (TCU, LA Tech, New Mexico, New Mexico St, Colorado St, Air Force, Utah St, Wyoming). Travel in Division doesn’t get much more compact. We could have a Championship Game in NFL Stadium (Denver, Dallas, SF, Phoenix) or Hawaii.

  105. Steve September 1, 2010 12:36 pm

    madeinhawaii:

#101 We can get enraged at Nevada this season, and Fresno St. next season, but it will be hard against Boise, since UH will be playing at Boise.

  106. Stephen Tsai September 1, 2010 12:37 pm

UH does not have 14 commitments.

As far as I know, all of the “commitments” are grayshirts.

    As far as I know.

  107. Steve September 1, 2010 12:39 pm

    Ralph:

#104 Will Kelly Majam be there?

  108. Steve September 1, 2010 12:42 pm

ST, but Coach Mac said on his show, that he had 14 commitments for next year. You may have to dig further.

  109. Stephen Tsai September 1, 2010 12:42 pm

Not exactly sure what more the Commish can do or say.

WAC presidents make the rules; apparently they break ’em, too.

Independence? BYU has thought of that for a bit. It is its plan.

UH is considering independence as a means of coping. Bottom line: MWC isn’t inviting UH. Big West hasn’t made an offer. And I’m pretty sure the WAC wouldn’t miss UH if it left. Which is why it should stay put. What other options does it have?

While we’re at it, BYU needs the WAC teams to fill schedule for next two years. After that, let’s see how many WAC teams it will schedule. So, why help BYU now?

  110. Ralph September 1, 2010 12:43 pm

Army and Navy are booked for several years, but UH should start now and book them whenever they are open. June Jones wanted UH to play the armed services-Army, Navy and Air Force, on a regular basis but the Fumbler did not commit to a long term deal with the Academies. Hopefully JD sees it differently. JJ got Navy to commit to playing SMU. I wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t contact Ellerson at Army to negotiate a long term deal with the Army.

  111. Stephen Tsai September 1, 2010 12:44 pm

Why do I have to dig when I just told you the answer?

  112. Steve September 1, 2010 12:47 pm

ST, it sounded like you were not completely sure.

  113. Steve September 1, 2010 12:49 pm

ST, what do you think of the idea of San Diego St., UNLV, and UTEP coming over to the WAC in even exchange for teams Fresno St., Nevada, and LA Tech?

  114. Pcwarrior September 1, 2010 12:49 pm

What happens to…. 29:09 til kick off!!!! Anyone getting jacked??? GO WARRIORS put a BEATING on USC

  115. Ralph September 1, 2010 12:49 pm

Norte Dame can afford to come to UH but they have their built in rivalries with USC, Stanford, the Academies, Michigan State, Purdue and Michigan. They have very few slots open, but UH should try for future games even if it is 6+ years down the line. Western Michigan and Tulsa are on their schedule, so ND is not limiting their schedule to BCS schools.

  116. kev-1 September 1, 2010 12:50 pm

The WAC wouldn’t miss UH? Now that Boise, Fresno, and Nevada are out, you don’t consider Hawaii to be the WAC’s biggest draw (okay, maybe in football)? Are you serious? A lot of people read this blog for insight into UH sports and football in particular being the time of year. I think the host should have a bigger vision and more optimism regarding the home team. Staying in the WAC really diminishes UH’s potential.

  117. Ralph September 1, 2010 12:55 pm

Steve all the players will be there to participate, its what the players do to help the program. Come on out on the 18th, after a good work out you can take a short nap, rejuvenate and return to the Stanley to watch Na Wahine take on BYU

  118. d1島 September 1, 2010 12:57 pm

Wow, Michigan and Ohio St. in separate Big X divisions.

  119. d1島 September 1, 2010 12:59 pm

…relying on “crossover” games for yearly matchup.

  120. WenatcheeWarrior September 1, 2010 1:02 pm

So what can we realistically expect tomorrow night? The talent difference in this game is pretty drastic, but this USC team isn’t half as good as the last Trojans team to come to the islands. I’m expecting to lose something like 47-20, but wouldn’t be shocked if we only lose by 10-15 points.

Try to keep in mind that this is the same USC team that was annihilated by Stanford in SoCal by 34 points.

  121. d1島 September 1, 2010 1:03 pm

    kev-1,

It took a lot of effort to get Hawaii into the conference. Despite present circumstances, what better long-term alternative does UH have?

I expect more major conference re-alignments in 2-3 years; IMHO it would be better for Hawaii to already be in a conference when that happens.

  122. Committed Road Warrior September 1, 2010 1:05 pm

I heard about the Discovery Channel building hostage/shooting incident that took place in the DC/Maryland suburbs earlier today. I have a co-worker who lives two blocks from that building…and quickly recognized the location when it first popped up on the news outlets.

Luckily I’ve been in El Paso, TX for work all week, hence I wasn’t around when this situation took place. Heading up to PHX tomorrow for a few days before returning to DC…should be able to catch the UH/USC game while in Phoenix.

  123. Steve September 1, 2010 1:11 pm

Does anyone know where Benson is staying while in Hawaii?

  124. kev-1 September 1, 2010 1:12 pm

    d1

I understand the security reasons of being in a conference, but that assumes the WAC will be around long term. I agree that there will be major conference changes, and I think when that happens, the WAC will crumble and if Hawaii is still in it, then what?

  125. d1島 September 1, 2010 1:13 pm

By adding in two FCS members to the WAC who have the wherewithal to jump up to FBS status in 2-3 years, is Hawaii really going to be any worse off than going independent and probably having to schedule at least 2 FCS opponents in those seasons anyway?

Adding two Texas teams probably keeps LaTech in the WAC. Without BY-Who I don’t think USU gets into the MWC.

With 5 FBS opponents in-conference, BY-Who, a rotation of one or two of the Service Academies, and other OOC matchups staying bowl-eligible continues to be do-able.

  126. d1島 September 1, 2010 1:15 pm

    Steve,

Not sure….he had reservations but there was a “clerical error” and he had to change plans! 😆

  127. d1島 September 1, 2010 1:20 pm

    kev-1,

Then I don’t see it being very much different anyway.

  128. Steve September 1, 2010 1:20 pm

Wondering why everybody is skirting around the issue of San Diego St., UNLV, and UTEP coming into the WAC for Fresno St., Nevada, and LA Tech?

  129. Steve September 1, 2010 1:21 pm

San Diego St. is not happy being in the MWC, and UTEP is not happy being in C-USA.

  130. d1島 September 1, 2010 1:22 pm

    Steve,

I think Garret addressed that awhile ago.

Basically his point was, why would those 3 schools want to move?

  131. NCAA September 1, 2010 1:25 pm

I think SDS, UNLV, and UTEP would not make as much money coming to the WAC. No win situation for them.

  132. Steve September 1, 2010 1:28 pm

The reason San Diego St. and UTEP would gladly make the move, they are not happy with how they are left out of TV games, in their current conferences. This is widely known. The only reason they do not move is their conferences buyout clause, but if they were to make deal, like an even swap, or exchange, they would gladly make the move.

  133. Steve September 1, 2010 1:29 pm

    NCAA:

They are not making much money in their current conferences, bottom of the pecking order there.

  134. Steve September 1, 2010 1:32 pm

The WAC conference should make the deal now, especially with SDS and UNLV. This will forego a costly legal battle with Fresno St. and Nevada.

  135. d1島 September 1, 2010 1:34 pm

    Steve,

    If can, can.

    If no can…

    NauPauLunChauWah

  136. Steve September 1, 2010 1:35 pm

Benson says that Fresno St. and Nevada cannot leave the WAC until the 2012-2013 athletic season, then why is ESPN reporting that those 2 schools will leave the WAC the same time as Boise St.

MTW doesn’t have a buyout clause.

  141. gigi-hawaii September 1, 2010 1:43 pm

hmmm. Very interesting, Pomai. So Roysan and Pride believe UH will be slaughtered, but D1 and Ipu Man and Kekoa think USC will be slaughtered.

    Who will win?

ST, by the way, will there be a prize for the winner on Pomai’s list?

    Hawaii – 20

    USC – 47

  144. Garret September 1, 2010 1:50 pm

The reason San Diego St. and UTEP would gladly make the move, they are not happy with how they are left out of TV games, in their current conferences. This is widely known. The only reason they do not move is their conferences buyout clause, but if they were to make deal, like an even swap, or exchange, they would gladly make the move.

I wasn’t going to comment on expansion stuff but I thought I should point some things…there is NO buyout clause for SDSU to leave the MWC. They let anyone leave if they wish. SDSU would pay $0 to leave. So, if the only thing that is holding them back is a buyout clause they would already be in the WAC.

Nevada estimates that they will get between $1.2 million and $2 million more from the MWC than they have been getting from the WAC. That doesn’t even take into account how ESPN will decrease the TV money for the WAC after BSU leaves. ESPN is expected to show the WAC less after BSU leaves…BYU probably is going to get those ESPN appearances.

I live in San Diego and follow their news closely because I would love for them to be in the same conference as UH. But SDSU cannot afford to take less money from another conference and they bring no ESPN TV value for football so the dollars make no sense at all for SDSU to join the WAC.

C-USA’s TV deal is probably even better than the MWC’s TV deal since they get about the same amount of money and they keep their local TV rights for anything not on ESPN or CBS CS. Why would UTEP take $1.5 million to $2 million less to go to the WAC?

They are not making much money in their current conferences, bottom of the pecking order there.

The MWC and C-USA share money equally among their teams. Their last place team gets 3x the TV money than the WAC average. Their NCAA basketball money is far more than the WAC and is shared equally. The bottom team gets the same as the top team.

Why does the MWC need to trade teams with the WAC? They already have BSU, Nevada and Fresno and any of their teams can leave for free if they wish.

I’ll leave the expansion comments to others now.

  145. Garret September 1, 2010 1:52 pm

NMSU announced their home-and-home deal with BYU.

The New Mexico State Athletics Department announced today that the Aggies football team will play BYU in 2011 and 2012 in a home-and-home series. The Aggies will travel to Provo, Utah in 2011 and BYU will return the game in Las Cruces in 2012.

  146. Garret September 1, 2010 1:54 pm

  148. Shoko September 1, 2010 1:56 pm

Not to mention we would be doing the MWC a favor by taking UNLV and SDSU. I would think those two bottom feeders would only help the MWC in their BCS quest as it would increase their rankings.

  149. papajoe2 September 1, 2010 1:57 pm

Steve. How can it be a trade if the MWC already have those teams committed? The only trade I could think of is eliminating the buyout and buy in fees for the 2 WAC schools. How does that benefit the 2 or 3 teams by supposedly joining the WAC? Our end of the year payout is less than what the MWC gives, so already the MWC teams joining the WAC, would be losing money. If they stay where they are and the MWC becomes and automatic BCS qualifier, then their end of the year payout will be even bigger. With BYWho leaving the MWC, how many teams will the MWC have if SDState and UNLV joins the WAC? I think that would make it 8 teams. With the 10 teams currently, the match ups and travel partners would be just right. It would be more sensible for the MWC to add 2 teams, giving it 12, than losing 2 and making it 8. With 12 teams the MWC could make 2 divisions, like east and west and have a more lucrative playoff. One of the negatives with that would be splitting the pie 12 ways rather than 8 or 10. I would really love for San Diego State and UNLV to join the WAC, but, if you take away our emotions, it just doesn’t make any sense.

  150. A-joe September 1, 2010 1:58 pm

USC is 6-0 against Hawaii, but the Warriors say they are not intimidated by the success and aura of USC.

“To me, it’s just a name,” Hawaii linebacker Corey Parades said. “We’re all human. We all work hard. We work just as hard as them in the offseason. … On the field, it’s just man against man, whoever is better.”

  151. Kazz (click to support UH softball) September 1, 2010 1:58 pm

  159. Derek September 1, 2010 2:22 pm

In 2007, Stanford was a 41 point underdog at USC. Final Score: Stanford 24, USC 23 on a great pass in the end zone at the final buzzer. It was one of the greatest upsets in college football history. Last year, Washington, a 19 1/2 point underdog against USC beat the Trojans 16-13 in Seattle. The last five games of last year, USC was 2-3 against PAC 10 teams, losing bad to Oregon, at home against Stanford, and at home against Arizona. They barely beat Arizona St. 14-9 and beat their arch rival UCLA. Although they were 9-4 last season I think the trend is down for USC. Their talent level is not as good as prior teams. Make no mistake, they still have lots of 4 and 5 star players, but they are not as scary as before. To me, we get chance!!!! But, things have to fall our way and we have to get the breaks. USC has got to turn the ball over a couple to times and we have to capatalize on it and score. Our offense has to keep the ball enough so that our defense doesn’t get worn out. A big special team play may spell the difference. Or, it might come down to a field goal. UH has to play relaxed and with confidence that they can make some big plays and be smart. I also believe that the coaches might be a big factor in determining the outcome as far as their calls and their adjustments. In the past, we have seen us get out coached. Maybe some changes in the booth and on the field might help. The weather will be very hot and the conditioning so important along with the depth. It doesn’t have to be close, but a win will do. USC is playing against the NCAA and the country and they are mad, but they aren’t going to a bowl game and is on probation. UH feels it has a big opportunity and wants to show the nation that Hawaii football is back and that the MWC made a mistake.

This series has been one sided, but people didn’t think Barack Obama could be President either, and he won. I have a feeling tomorrow….Hawaii Warriors – 38, USC – 17. After this, Ryan Parker will pen a new song version of Hawaii’s Warriors.

    Hawaii, you gotta believe!!!!

  160. Shoko September 1, 2010 2:27 pm

Yep, not to mention the Trojans game against Washington State last year. Score was 27-6 and USC was a huge favorite. 28 points was the spread, if not mistaken.

  161. A-House September 1, 2010 2:31 pm

Are the WAC schools hurrying their football commit with BYU just to fill the Boise St departure in 2011?

Does this indicate that the WAC will NOT find replacements for Boise St, Fresno and Nevada and therefore fill in BYU for 2012?

Seems that BYU stands to gain a lot with very little effort to make their “indy” status workable while the WAC gets nothing other than a game to fill in their schedules?

I cannot shake the feeling that BYU “used” the WAC to gain departure from the MWC, not keep its commitment to place the non-football sports with the WAC, and fill its football schedule with the scrambling WAC schools.

As a McKinley HS teacher tells his students during their first class with him by pounding his desk and says, “human nature sucks”.

  162. gigi-hawaii September 1, 2010 2:32 pm

  167. bb September 1, 2010 2:41 pm

    Kazz,

I spend good money on my tools. I am not wasting a good screwdriver on my buddy Karl.

Part of me hopes he is on the field during the recognition of the Softball team in some capacity. If there is a clear distinction between HATE (yes, i know strong word) and LOVE from the fans it would be during that time.

    Okay, maybe not…

  168. Dere September 1, 2010 2:47 pm

Hawaii should take the Makai sideline so they can stay in the shade a lot more. Put the Trojans on the Mauka side so they can wilt. Of course, I’m sure Coach Mac has already thought of it before this. If not, I would be very shocked. Any advantage we can get should be utilized.

  169. chopsueyboy September 1, 2010 2:57 pm

Remember what Rolovich and company did to BYU’s undefeated season.

    We can do it.

  170. chopsueyboy September 1, 2010 3:00 pm

    Dere

Since this is a non-conference game, we’re not required to follow WAC rules of the team being on the same sidelines as the students.

Most likely, the team will be on the makai sidelines, as I wilt on the mauka side

  171. mctruck September 1, 2010 3:07 pm

Just reading some Utah newspaper articles and there’s a great dislike,(hate is the exact word used), among current MWC members for BYU, and this was prior to BYU’s announcement with going independant. So, it makes one wonder about BYU’s tactics and business dealings with other schools. Maybe a oneway street…and as I see it so far, it just might be the case.

So buyer beware, as they say.

  172. haka September 1, 2010 3:07 pm

Tomorrow is the first game of the season.

It’s a big game, but it’s just one game.

As in all the games, we will bring it!

We will warm up with intensity.

We will rise to the occasion.

    We will be heard from.

    We will rock da hale.

    We are the fans.

Project Trojan Leadership: Seniors wide receiver Ronald Johnson and corner back Shareece Wright have helped to usher in the the next generation of Trojans by mentoring their freshmen protegees wr Robert Woods and corner back Nickell Robey. From Johnson and Wright to Matt Barkley and Malcom Smith, USC football has STRONG locker room voices to lead the 2010 campaign.

Coach Lane Kiffin pregame routine for the players is “lighter” then Pete Carroll’s. The “TEAM” has a business trip approach to this first game despite the beautiful tropical surroundings !

The team arrived late last night and went immediately to their rooms after seeing the hammer head shark in the lagoon. The Trojans woke up this morning to a perfect Oahu day, as the players had breakfast followed by a morning of team meetings.

USC did a short walk-thru at a local high school, then back to the hotel to rest and hydrate. NO schedule team activities planned like previous trips to the islands. At night, they have more meetings and a optional chapel or mass. The Trojans are of singular mind, return home 1-0, “NO DISTRACTIONS” !

  180. greenthumb September 1, 2010 3:27 pm

Remember the USC jinx. It may be our 13th man tomorrow. Each year USC has a “disappointing” loss — losing to a team it thought it should have beat. RainbowCliff can probably describe some of the mood after these annual losses: Stanford in 2007, Oregon State in 2008, University of Washington in 2009. So, after looking at USC’s 2010 schedule, who do they least want to lose to, and who are they most confident about beating? 👿

Neither division has been named but they break down like this: Michigan, Nebraska, Iowa, Michigan State, Minnesota and Northwestern in one. Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin, Illinois, Purdue and Indiana in the other.

Great place to kill some time during work

  196. Buffoman September 1, 2010 4:18 pm

I believe that we need to fill the holes with anyone wishing to take us as bodybag games. Which means away, but money, maybe national exposure, but, it’ll probably help us in recruitment. We will tell the recruits that we will play Auburn, or Oklahoma, or Michigan, whoever and will be on television.

Now it will be on the coaching staff to at least be decent. Yes, we may be dead at the end, but if we don’t look like road kill, it may get us some positive attention.

That, in my opinion is a better sell to a recruit than saying, “oh and we’re playing Northeastern West Montana State and will wrap up with Seouthwestern East Oklahoma Union.”

They at least don’t think body bag.

  197. RainbowCliff September 1, 2010 4:18 pm

#180 Continue: Players to Watch: WR Greg Salas ( Senior, Chino Ca.) QB Bryant Moniz ( Jr. Wahiawa, Hawaii)

Salas caught a ridiculous 106 balls last season for 1,590 yards and 8 TDs. He plays the slot position, so expect freshmen Nickell Robey to be thrown right into the fire against the Warriors “STAR” !

Moniz is a Fresno City College transfer, who passed for 2,396 yards and 14 TD’s in 09 in eight starts. As a product of their system, hecompleted 57.1% of his passes.

Strength / Spread Offense: “it’s always something in our favor, you don’t see it very much say’s Hawaii Head Coach Greg McMackin as they’ve had time to to work on us and study us and I know they’ll have a good plan for us and be a real challenge”.

Weakness: Line of Scrimmage / The Trojans will be able to over power the Warriors on both side of the ball. Hawaii’s offensive line is in transition particularly at the guard and center spots, so they’re unlikely to find a lot of juice in their power run game in which they don’t really emphasize that part of the game plan.

Defensively, Kiffin noted that the Warriors tend to gamble and move around a lot as his belief is that his Trojans keep it simple they will “WEAR” down Hawaii in the early evening heat as Marc Tyler and Allen Bradford “POUNDS” the rock !

Hawaii defensively don’t have the talent to match the Trojans, so they’ll need to force turn overs by confusing Matt Barkley or taking advantage of USC’s tackle-fre fall camp.

The all time combined score between these two teams is 297-67 in favor of the Trojans, so this would be a “historical moumental” upset IF Hawaii can win !

  198. 808ike September 1, 2010 4:21 pm

Heard the presser by CB. BYWhoooo did a con job on the WAC and Benson

#181 Green Thumb / USC dissapointing losses: Yes, I can say that SC BIG losses has held it’s memory among USC alumni, boosters and loyal fans BUt the exciting play from it’s many STAR athletes out weigh the upsets with Pac 10, National and Rose bowl champioships !

Pac 10 is highly competitve as EVERY team get’s up for the men of Troy as they bring the game and ALL interest from opposing teams, media and fans alike.

This game is just plain “business” to them as they come for ONE thing to DOMINATE it’s opponent as ONE major factor you will see that will over wealm the Warriors “world class team speed” stated by USC 710 espn radio announcer Pete Arbogost.

USC 45 minute walk thru at local Kopolei High School was brokrn into even thirds starting with special teams then offense and defense. USC fans are EXCITED to watch USC special teams this season as players has put in a lot of time as they really like to HIT and TACKLE !

With the work they have put into it EXPECTATIONS are high for them to be a DOMINATE unit as Hawaii punt returner Greg Salas will soon learn !

They do everything first class and spends TONS of money providing the BEST for their students and athletes as Galen Center is a beautiful arena built by private money !

  231. RainbowCliff September 1, 2010 6:06 pm

#228 Hank: with all due respect you REALLY don’t know until you really see it LIVE in person !

Reading about it is one thing, actually seeing it is a whole new perspective !

  232. Hank September 1, 2010 6:23 pm

    #232…rainbow cliff…i’m a 1980 USC alum, but I’m from Hilo and have a UH graduate degree…brother.

  233. Kazz (click to support UH softball) September 1, 2010 6:25 pm

Seeing anything live does bring a perspective to one’s eyes.

Getting to watch our Warriors and Rainbow Wahine live and in person for every game on the field or on the court is something that is unique and brings pride to those willing to understand how truly different Hawaii is as a whole.

Sometimes they say “different doesn’t always mean better”.

    In this case, it does.

My teams, MY school, MY HOME, and MY PRIDE.

  234. Kenny Dison September 1, 2010 6:27 pm

I love when you talk about this type of stuff in your blog. Perhaps could you continue this?

  235. Kazz (click to support UH softball) September 1, 2010 6:33 pm

If this whole thing was actually about improving conferences on pure athletic competition, perhaps UH would have a BETTER shot at the BIG WEST for their 18 other non-football sports.

  236. RainbowCliff September 1, 2010 6:34 pm

#233 Hank “BIG” Hilo Brother I live here in TROJAN land and have LIFE TIME USC relationships as my deceased mother is a graduate from the University of Southern California and I have PLENTY of them that support my cause to the Al Wooten Center and annual golf classic !

  245. protector September 1, 2010 7:33 pm

I’d like the Warriors to dominate the Conference for the next 2 years, garner all the BCS points, and have the Basketball team get to post-season play for the next few years and then have the MWC grudgingly having to invite UH in where they will be re-united with some old rivals. And BYU will have only the dregs of the WAC for those guaranteed games; I’d call it getting their “just desserts” rather than the current situation where they’re having their cake and eating it too.

  246. Bulla September 1, 2010 7:40 pm

    RainbowCliff,

Really like the updates on the USC football team. Might be just me, but I would appreciate it if you would not mention our players by name when you talk about them learning a lesson about the game of football from USC.

  258. OldDiver September 1, 2010 8:26 pm

    Kazz,

When I took a quick glance at your #219 post I thought you were taking UH, USC game prediction to a new level by predicting the score by quarters. Then I added up the score and you had UH winning 95 to 90. LOL.

Best of luck tomorrow. The weather is great and we are already spending a lot of money. We hope we come back soon. Wish Hawaii could make it to the Pac-10. My wife and I would love to make this trip every other year. This trip is our 3rd honeymoon.

    so who’s punking out tomw?

  274. Pride. September 1, 2010 9:59 pm

Gotta win two out of the three phases of the game.

    Offense

    Defense

    Special Teams

Which one of those are we going to win?

Of cousre, that means that we have to win the special teams battle. I’m not sure if fans truly realize how important the special teams are. Fumbled kickoff, blocked punt, botched snap on the P.A.T. All gamebreakers. We need to be the ones making the opponent do all of those things.

  275. Pride. September 1, 2010 10:00 pm

Gotta play great sudden change football!

  276. Pride. September 1, 2010 10:01 pm

Gotta win the red zone battle. Score in the red zone on offense and keep the other team from scoring on defense.

  277. Pride. September 1, 2010 10:01 pm

Did I say anything about turnovers? Do I need to say anything about turnovers?

  278. Pride. September 1, 2010 10:05 pm

“Among the true freshmen on the 1978 squad were future stars Marcus Allen, Chip Banks and Riki Gray. The sophomore class included the likes of Ronnie Lott, Hoby Brenner, Keith Van Horne, Dennis Smith and Jeff Fisher. Even guys like Charles White, Brad Budde, Anthony Munoz and Paul McDonald were only juniors.

All told, 37 players off of the 1978 roster played in the NFL, 19 of whom were freshmen and sophomores. Which is not to say that the senior class just stood on the sidelines, holding water bottles. Among the seniors who played major roles that season were fullback Lynn Cain (USC’s second-leading rusher that year), flanker Calvin Sweeney (USC’s leading receiver), offensive guard Pat Howell, nose guard Rich Dimler (USC’s second-leading tackler) and placekicker Frank Jordan. “

  298. Curt September 1, 2010 11:23 pm

Best wishes to Colt tomorrow. Hope he gets some decent playing time and throws 2 TDs against Seattle. His game starts 1 hr before UH-USC. Interesting that after all the cuts, the Raiders still have 4 QBs. I would think it will drop to 3 sometime shortly after this last pre-season game. Time for Colt to deliver.

  299. Curt September 1, 2010 11:28 pm

Anybody know what the latest attendance figures are for the UH-USC game? It looks like it’s going to fall well off a sell out.

  300. madeinhawaii September 1, 2010 11:31 pm

In 2005 USC brought in 4000 fans and they spent 6 million! …. This year it’s 7000… interpolated that may be 10.5 million in spending by these generous visitors!

Big name teams bring $$$ not only to the turnstiles but to Hawaii’s overall economy..

Football can be a boon to Hawaii’s tourism industry.

Hawaii can’t afford to lose it’s D1 football team.

    GO WARRIORS!

  301. madeinhawaii September 1, 2010 11:33 pm

The travel industry should help pad the payment to visiting teams with very rich football traditions. That way, UH may be able to book more teams like USC and really build a strong positive image for itself.

Something strange tonight, as some of the bloggers know the wind blows pretty good at my place and with it the sounds from H1 from behind Red Hill or the traffic from the airport, but to night nothing, no wind, no sounds just dead silence, the clouds just hanging in the air, when I went out on the front porch it was really weird, then after a few moments there was just the beginning of a breeze but it was different it wasn’t coming from the west like it normally does it was coming from the east, from Manoa way. Hmmmm just wondering if this is a sign of what is coming later in the day?

There are several factors that affect the metabolism of a person, such as the amount of muscle tissue, the frequency of the meals one consumes, genetics, the digestive system, stress levels, personal diet, and activity levels. Metabolism slows down due to the following: loss of muscle because of not enough physical activity, the tendency of the body to cannibalize its own tissue because there is not enough food energy to sustain it, and the decrease of physical activity that comes naturally with old age.

This is a blog that every one has the right to comment pro or con for Hawaii athletics. ONE thing I won’t do is use profanity as SO many bloggers use here to express their dislike or anger at topic or subject.

I understand your compassion and loyalty for the Warriors, heck I lived the experience in my playing days but that was 29 years ago as I am an objective and professional young man who lives in Los Angeles and has witness the beatings that USC has given the Warriors !

Until the Warriors can compete and keep it close then I would GLADLY change my words BUT I don’t see it Thursday or any time soon as the Trojans are for real and maybe Hawaii

might get a football progam like them one day !

#266 Fight On: University Of Spoil Child I don’t need for you to lecture me on “cutting and pasting” your bud Jordan Moore quotes as frankly you two are nothing but “water boys” on mommy and daddy USC money having the time of your life in the Aloha State !

Enjoy your time and “RESPECT” your elders as I will take a football and punish you and your bud with it as this former Hawaii athlete will “BRING IT” despite you being a FAN or student at USC.

What I drink you can’t afford it unless you go into your parent’s account and that is not happening as they are smart enough to know to keep the MONEY locked up as a USC education is needed for a cynical brat like you !

Now come to Los Angeles, cut & paste that !

Hey guys, Brashton Satele was on “Hard Knocks” last night. He was walking around Times Square with a female friend. They walked by a pizza place, and he says, “That’s my pizza place”. (Last week Coach Westhoff said he should open up a pizza shop in the Bronx and leave him alone.)
