The Warrior Beat turns 2 next month, which means one thing: A party.
Our planning committee has rented the Ed Wong Hospitality Room in the Stan Sheriff Center. So, the plan is for the party to be held July 10, starting at 6 p.m.
There will be live entertainment, food, refreshments, door prizes, special guests and games.
Everyone is invited.
Additional details will be posted in the next few days.

Blaze Soares, who had endured a pinched nerve in spring training, competed in passing drills during yesterday’s unsupervised workouts. Soares appears to be in good health.

blaze.JPG

* * *

Soares said he wants “it printed” that he weighs 233, not whatever weight UH uses in the roster. Linebacker Tyson Kafentzis said he weighs 225, not 208.

blazekaf.JPG

The Warriors are certainly deep at linebacker. Exiting spring training, R.J. Kiesel-Kauhane, Brashton Satele and Tyson Kafentzis were the second-team linebackers.

* * *

Here’s wide receiver Kalua Noa, who will be joining the Warriors as a gray shirt in January.

kaluanoa.JPG

* * *

Running back Daniel Libre is managing to balance school and football. Libre said he does not like to pose for photos, so all shots have to be on the move. I think I’m going to audition for TMZ.

libre.JPG

* * *

Kealoha Pilares has adjusted from the move from running back to right slotback. He juked several safeties yesterday. If you look closely, Pilares has a new nose stud. Pilares and Libre recently added nose studs. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to show Libre’s nose stud when he’s on the move.

UH is going with only three middle LBs this season: Solomon Elimimian, Brashton Satele and Mana Lolotai. Corey Paredes, who has been playing very well in passing drills, moves from the middle to the outside.

  6. Lonomakana June 19, 2008 7:45 am

Shoots, I’ll be leaving O’ahu on the 7th. Attention, Moku Nui people, we need to have our own cattle call.

  7. Stephen Tsai June 19, 2008 7:46 am

I think Paipai Falemalu gets on the field this season.

Nose stud? I didn’t know those things actually had a name!

  15. Stephen Tsai June 19, 2008 8:03 am

I guess when you run out of skin to tattoo, the next step is body piercing.
One trend I’ve noticed is more players are cutting their hair.

    The rich get richer.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) ā€” Notre Dame is renewing its television contract with NBC.

The university and NBC announced Thursday that they have agreed to a five-year deal that runs through the 2015 season. The current contract was scheduled to expire in 2010.

This contract includes seven homes games per season and for the first time an eighth off-site home game played at neutral stadiums.

NBC has broadcast Irish football since 1991.

  24. Garret June 19, 2008 8:22 am

    ST,

Thank you for all of the updates and photos…especially the news about Blaze being healthy! I was wondering about his health as we hadn’t heard much about him lately. A fully healthy Blaze would be a HUGE boost to the defense this season.

  25. (Jesse) James June 19, 2008 8:22 am

Good to see Pilares is ajusting to slotback…with Heun and Libre in the back field it looks like the offensive weapons may be shaping up…..

  26. (Jesse) James June 19, 2008 8:22 am

Ooooohhh…almost forgot about Leon Jackson too!!

  27. Garret June 19, 2008 8:23 am

Congratulations to Chad Kapanui! Offensive Rookie of the Year!

Chad Kapanui, quarterback for the Sioux City Bandits, is being honored as Offensive Rookie of the Year. He is in his first season in indoor football and played collegiately at the University of Hawaii. Kapanui completed 227 of 364 passes for 2,402 yards and 40 touchdown passes. In addition, he rushed 52 times for 141 yards and seven touchdowns. Led by Kapanui, the Bandits offense finished in the top 5 of several categories: scoring offense (5th, scoring 41.6 points per game), passing offense (3rd, averaging 165.6 yards per game), rushing offense (2nd, averaging 76.3 yards per game) and total offense (3rd, averaging 241.9 yards per game). He was recently selected for his first UIF All-Star game. This weekend, Kapanui and his teammates head east to St. Charles, Missouri, where the Bandits will meet the RiverCity Rage in the first round of the UIF playoffs.

  28. Garret June 19, 2008 8:25 am

Chad Owens mentioned here–I had thought there was a question about exactly what his injury was but this report seems to be sure it was his ACL.

I had forgotten that John Elway is co-owner of the team that Chad plays for.

olorado had suffered a devastating injury blow of their own, when star rookie wide receiver/kick returner Chad Owens torn his ACL, joining another speedy WR threat Brad Pyatt on injured reserve.

Sure hope that Manti Te’o selects UH, joining Paipai Falemalu, Alema Tachibana,

UH will be known as “Linebacker U.” (not Penn St).

Already looking forward to 2009 and beyond, and 2008 hasn’t even started yet !!!

Hope Rich and Stretch have a great time golfing today!

  37. Pauoa Boy June 19, 2008 8:30 am

ryan #20 – Paipai is more suited for OLB, with his height, length and ability to cover sideline to sideline, if he gets bigger and stronger he may even play some DE, he’s pretty quick for a big guy.

Now the question is, can he get his cousin Manti over here so they can form a killah LB core for the next couple years, pretty please šŸ™‚

  38. Kekoa June 19, 2008 8:31 am

  40. rage777 June 19, 2008 8:34 am

Damn, Libre does look really strong. No wonder he is close to the top in some of the strength categories. He has the Mike Tyson neck, nobody can knock him out.

  41. mctruck June 19, 2008 8:35 am

    ST,

I like your picture concept of da-players…makes for better discussions, etc.

Ohhhhh!!!, I can see it now…..Chad Kapanui will be called a “system QB”…bwaaahahaha!! right on Chad.

  42. Pauoa Boy June 19, 2008 8:36 am

Good to hear about bruddah Kaps, who would have taught he would become AFL Offensive Rookie Of The Year as one QB. He look like one DLineman nowadays. Wonder why UH never let him play more QB since he played dat in high school…

  50. mctruck June 19, 2008 8:43 am

Sure can, L10pc! Been wondering where you were…:)

Yeah…everyone figures there is going to be a “post buffet shift“. I called it “second stage”. Starts around the time homey arrives…

I would be very surprised if there wasn’t a third stage…with the songs flowing, a second round of food, nabeyaki udon for Liz, the waitresses dozing at the counter, and Tina tapping her foot and pointing at the clock. šŸ™‚

  61. onarock June 19, 2008 8:58 am

    Good morning, Tsaikos!

Just got off the phone with UH ticket office. 1st time Warrior football season ticket holdah! AwwwwwwwYeeeaahh!! What I couldn’t believe was that all of the sideline seats below Yellow level (even the ones near the end zone) were sold out! Settled for Mauka-Yellow level-Section KK-Row 11.

Just can’t help but wonder if the guy I was talking to on the phone really made an effort to find me the best seats. The guy didn’t even take 5 seconds to suggest the seats I eventually settled on! I felt I couldn’t push him to work harder, so what else could I do, but take the seats. Wish I could pick the seats like we can with the airlines! Hmmmmmmmmmmm, Mr. Donovan?

  62. (Jesse) James June 19, 2008 9:02 am

    DPK in da house…

    Kekoa…will do

Man…the D just keeps looking better every day. Can’t wait for the Warriors Greatest Hits to begin.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  63. Pauoa Boy June 19, 2008 9:03 am

ai-eee-soos – true dat, should be “Killah Linebacker U”, cause all the boys can pound and no scared. Das why we the hardest hitting team in the nation. Like bruddah Blaze say, I just look for kill guys all day! Das what I’m talking about, crush em all!

  64. homey Ā® June 19, 2008 9:13 am

Good to see future Warriors partaking in the unsupervised workouts.

    HI XLiz!

SteveM – L10pc wants to come so he can sing his Western songs.

Hey DPK! Getting ready for tonight? Cutting your nails? Do you need some NO2 to dull the pain? šŸ˜†

    Koakane – Nuff napping already!

Eh Bulla, those are some awesome numbers you posted yesterday!!! I can beat that! Bench 50 lbs. x 10…yeah 500 lbs!

    ‘Morning every someone.

  66. Pauoa Boy June 19, 2008 9:15 am

  73. (Jesse) James June 19, 2008 9:28 am

  74. Da Punchbowl Kid June 19, 2008 9:28 am

The lil instigator is startin’ early today.

Speaking of NO2, I have some potetentially devastating news. The NO2 from the dentist’s appointment yesterday has made my voice hoarse and I may not be able to sing tonight. I’m just letting everyone know this early so that they will be prepared. šŸ˜†

  75. Pauoa Boy June 19, 2008 9:31 am

DPK – you shua it’s hoarse and not squeeky šŸ™‚

  76. Da Punchbowl Kid June 19, 2008 9:32 am

Pilares and Libre are so similar to each other. Matching running styles and physiques. Same hair dos nearly. Maybe we can call them the “Stud Brothers”.

  77. Stretch June 19, 2008 9:33 am

See everyone later tonight, time for me to go hack away with Rich.

  78. Pauoa Boy June 19, 2008 9:35 am

  82. onarock June 19, 2008 9:40 am

homey – thanks for your encouragement. I’m good with the seats I got, but just can’t help but wonder if the ticket guy I’m talking with is really giving an honest effort to find me the best seats.

Ho, I gotta start training for that trek up to the Yellow level….lessee, 1) drink planny beers, 2) eat until no can eat no mo’ah, and then 3) walk up stairs in a high rise building…….ok, maybe I just concentrate on Steps 1 and 2, and ride the elevatah’ for now!!

    To the Warriors –
We’re bringing in the 12th man…………Linebackers, you guys keep bringing in the HURT!!!!! AaaawwwwwwYeeeeaaaahh!!!

  83. homey Ā® June 19, 2008 9:41 am

    Stretch – “see” you 2night.

DPK – Are you blind too? Pilares and Libre definitely have dissimilar running styles and body shapes.

PB – You should hear DPK with his duck voice. Talented buggah. So if DPK doesn’t sing then that frees up at least 20 songs for others to sing.

  84. AddahknowsportsĀ© June 19, 2008 9:42 am

  85. homey Ā® June 19, 2008 9:44 am

Just think if our linebackers had the mean streak Miss Pig has, Whoa! look out BCS teams!

  97. homey Ā® June 19, 2008 9:58 am

Welcome Jay Metzger. He can do a shaka!

  98. AddahknowsportsĀ© June 19, 2008 9:59 am

Homey making trouble so early in the morning? Uh…no “oh Blaze” did not come up in un-conversation.

Giddy…yeah, sorry. I was only horsing around. See ya at the corral.

  99. SteveM June 19, 2008 10:00 am

onarock — LizKauai, Peaches, JaM, Brie, and I +1 are in JJ yellow row 7 & 8. We requested yellow sideline. You have good seats…looks like you are on the 40 yard line.

Before the season starts, maybe I’ll compile a list of where everyone is sitting and maybe post a stadium map showing Tsai-kos by section. email or post your section, color and row numbers if you wish.

  100. Pauoa Boy June 19, 2008 10:01 am

It’s about time we get depth at DB…I wonder who going start?

  101. (Jesse) James June 19, 2008 10:01 am

ST…any relation to that Craig guy??? MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHHA

  102. Stephen Tsai June 19, 2008 10:02 am

Whoops. I messed up on the photo of the second-team linebackers. That’s what happens when you use the same label for two different pictures. The correction picture is above.

  103. Bulla June 19, 2008 10:03 am

Falemalu is the real deal, only upside with him. hard worker, good family, and good work ethic. he WILL be on the field this season, in some form or manner.

nice photos ST, you are getting to be quite the photo buff……

  104. homey Ā® June 19, 2008 10:04 am

PB – Let’s see, I say Mouton starts.

  105. WarriorMojo June 19, 2008 10:04 am

Whoa, awesome news that Billy Stutzmann was there. That’s a good sign.

ST, any sightings of Geordan Hanohano?

    Or Laupepa Letuli?

  106. Pauoa Boy June 19, 2008 10:09 am

Wouldn’t mind seeing Paipai on the field, but maybe he should red-shirt, learn, drink Muscle Milk, lift, get biggah, fastah, and then smashmouth for 4 years…I’m hoping. I no tink with Adam, Sol, and Blaze then R.J., Brashton, and Tyson he going get much PT. Get spesho teams but I rather see him during downs drilling people to the ground!

  107. Pauoa Boy June 19, 2008 10:13 am

Garrans I know Mouton starting, that guy is unreal NFL material, pray he or none of the boys get hurt! Would like to see Roberts, Dowling, and Davis on the field at the same time in maybe one dime package. Get speed, and height, and they can all jump too.

  108. (Jesse) James June 19, 2008 10:13 am

Pauoa boy Gotta agree with you on that assessment. I also think he should be saved for a year…but if he can make an immediate impact, than maybe he should be played.

  109. Da Punchbowl Kid June 19, 2008 10:15 am

*DPK thinks “Kekoa wants me to sing him a bestiality related love song? Awkward… Very awkward… Aaaaaah what the hell.”

Okay Kekoa, you got it. Just buy me plenny shots first and it might happen.

  110. Pauoa Boy June 19, 2008 10:15 am

So lets see if Mouton starts, Mike Washington starts, Malcom Lane starts, I wonder which of them three going be returning kicks and punts. Each of them get Chad Owens take it to the house ability, hmmm… or maybe someone else get Road Runner shoes on the team?

  111. SteveM June 19, 2008 10:18 am

  112. Pauoa Boy June 19, 2008 10:19 am

Unko James – he probably would make an impact after watching him play, he’s definitely capable. Still though rather him have 4 solid years to possibly start at one of the LB positions, and then maybe get his cousin Te’o over here too, I’m praying!

  113. Da Punchbowl Kid June 19, 2008 10:21 am

PB- Aren’t you down for the ‘hood? Don’t forget your homeboy Kaeao back there. He saw some time last year before getting hurt.

Is everybody forgetting about Mana Lolotai in the LB mix? He may be more so an up and comer, but he might be running with Paipai in the future.

  114. Pauoa Boy June 19, 2008 10:22 am

Unko SteveM – who get those Tsai-ko black shirts, I need couple for represent while I’m in SoCal San Diego with Aunty Ronnie and Unko Garret dem…

  115. Trashouts June 19, 2008 10:23 am

The great thing about Hawaii’s success is now they can start to build up depth. Unlike years past, Hawaii counted on 1st string players for most of the season. Now Hawaii is starting to get quality players coming to Hawaii and the players and coaches have made an atmosphere of hard work and full time football. This alone will breed better prepared players for the season. At the rate UH is going, eventually you not going even tell when 1st or 2nd string stay in the game. Look at the log jam already at certain positions like QB and Linebackers. Hawaii already made a name for themselves last year, now they will work on their destiny for decades to come.

Warriors ………………. come out to playyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!

  116. Da Punchbowl Kid June 19, 2008 10:23 am

Speaking of Lolotai, is he at the work outs, Tsai?

  117. Pauoa Boy June 19, 2008 10:24 am

DPK – I was talking DB’s cause Ao Boy play more safety with Desmond. I know he can play DB too but I’m sure Coach Mack going make Ao Boy call the defensive formations again and line errybody up correctly from the safety position.

Speaking of Mana Lolotai, wassup with Po’okela Ahmad too?

  118. Pauoa Boy June 19, 2008 10:27 am

Trashouts – Couldn’t have said it better myself…the talent of this Warrior team is unreal, garrans we going be top 25 material every year…I BELEIVE!!!

  119. Bulla June 19, 2008 10:27 am

Does Falemalu have the speed to play a corner / db? that would be unreal if he could, i think he’s fast enough, ST, what do you think?

  120. Da Punchbowl Kid June 19, 2008 10:27 am

Welcome Trashouts- Nice post. Where ya posting from? Hope to see more from you.

  121. SteveM June 19, 2008 10:29 am

  123. Pauoa Boy June 19, 2008 10:30 am

Unko Bulla – Paipai is huge he more LB/DE type den DB, but he pretty fast, I think he run 4.6-4.7 in the 40 if I remembah

  124. Da Punchbowl Kid June 19, 2008 10:31 am

  134. ai-eee-soos June 19, 2008 10:48 am

    Linebackers.

Pauoa Boy: I was thinking Paipai should redshirt too.

But if ST said he’s good enough to get PT this year, then it will be good because he will have game experience going into 2009.

In 2009, can you imagine what it’s going to be like, with Blaze on one side, and PaiPai on the other.

    Holy Chit !!!

University of Hawaii = Linebacker U.

  135. Kekoa June 19, 2008 10:48 am

PB ~ Go to SteveM site he listed above in post #121 and get all the ordering info. Remember, the proceeds go into the UH Foundation fund. Tsaikos maintain control and like in the past, direct those funds to the most needed area of concern.

The Blog Bash will also be a fundraiser of sorts, more about that later.

  140. Da Punchbowl Kid June 19, 2008 11:03 am

    koakane,
I remeber him as a little kid at Kalama dining hall eating dinner with his dad.

  141. Stephen Tsai June 19, 2008 11:05 am

    Hey, Bulla.
So, no, it’s not your imagination that something that was posted is longer there. Apparently, somebody was offered a job today, but the guy hasn’t told his current employers yet.

  142. Stephen Tsai June 19, 2008 11:06 am

But they said we don’t have to delete the comments.
It’s a good thing nobody reads this little ol’ blog.

  143. Unkanesson June 19, 2008 11:07 am

ST — Enjoying your pictures! That group shot of the backup linebackers is a great one. RJ and Tyson really got their game faces on, while Brashton looks like he’s easy going, belying the way we’ve seen him hit on special teams!

Is it August yet?? I’m really jonesin’ for some Warrior football action!! They’re going to be fun to watch!!

  144. onarock June 19, 2008 11:09 am

I really love the LBs that we have. In addition to our starting three, I think Brashton and R.J. are awesome, and that Mana has the potential to be great.

And Bobby Nash in his dad’s jersey, that was awesome. Congrats to him on his new contract.

So, I’m bringing my camera tonight. I’ve got enough memory sticks now that I can record full songs, not just 10-second clips. šŸ˜‰

  158. chawan_cut June 19, 2008 11:34 am

ok, this probably isn’t the smartest thing to do (but after the bull pic, what is??), and my friends have warned me about doing this, but i’ll post one last picture from Guam to show that the Tsaikos are omnipresent. that or just the coincidence of it all is too much..

the new link above is to go along with this pic i posted earlier.,
    http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a387/chawan_cut/DSC00251.jpg

i was at the Micronesian Mall (after eating their version of the loco moco) and ran across this store above.

i don’t want to embarrass or offend THE Princess or Mrs Wai in any way (and if I do, I’m truly sorry), but i just had to share it. what’s the chances of 1) having a store named this, IN Guam, and 2) me being IN Guam to see it. i couldn’t believe it.

i know i’ll get a rash of jokes and comments, but i can handle. i don’t mean any harm. its all in fun. again, what a coincidence?!? (i’ll just go into hiding after this and maybe come out when football season starts).

and that was the closest i got to the store. so no jokes there. just be respectful of THE Princess & Mrs. Wai. you can joke about me all you want, but remember to be courteous to them.

ok, off to hide now. cya later.
    Go Warriors!
    Go Wahine!
    Go Rainbows!

It is great that Mrs. McMackin is doing her clinic for UH’s women fans. I think that Michigan goes even beyond this and would love to see UH do this in the future. I know that some of the women would enjoy going through these drills!

This was a bonding experience with her mother that Kristin Roehling never imagined.

“I was impressed she was able to hold her own and actually do all the drills and tackle things,” the Birmingham resident said during the lunch break of the U-M Women’s Football Academy, in which she and mother Barb participated Saturday. “At one point, there was a dummy, and you had to run at it, tackle it and fly across the mat. She did it.”

Former U-M head coach Lloyd Carr initiated the academy in 1999 to raise money for breast cancer research at the U-M Comprehensive Cancer Center. Despite a limited planning period this year because of uncertainty about field availability, the event raised more than $101,000 and featured 283 women running through the paces. The academy has raised more than $1 million in its 10-year history.

From their morning offensive drills in the outfield of U-M’s baseball field to defensive drills inside Oosterbaan Fieldhouse, the women were working. Separated into groups, they would hear from each U-M position coach — from defensive coordinator Scott Shafer explaining how to watch a quarterback’s eyes to quarterbacks coach Rod Smith’s relating passing to Tae Bo (“punch and step through”).

  181. Garret June 19, 2008 12:17 pm

The head coach gives a seminar after lunch and the women have a scrimmage at the end of their day!

After the station drills, the women were riveted by head coach Rich Rodriguez’s personal demonstration of a few plays, using his coaches as props, with a little Rich Rod humor thrown in:

ā€¢ On the offensive line: “The only thing they look forward to is touchdowns and the buffet lunches.”

After lunch, the event was to conclude with an afternoon scrimmage.

  182. koakaneā„¢ June 19, 2008 12:22 pm

think that Michigan goes even beyond this and would love to see UH do this in the future. I know that some of the women would enjoy going through these drills!

garett – think is a great idea also but my concern is cost and does it include medical liability in case some one is injured?

Garret ~ We would have to make them half day drills for mornings only. If we beak for lunch, pau arready…who goin’ return.

  186. Garret June 19, 2008 12:41 pm

    koakane,

Good point about liability. Michigan has been doing this for 9 years, so that issue must have been addressed.

  187. Garret June 19, 2008 12:43 pm

    Kekoa,

LOL! I guess the Michigan women return after lunch…they must not serve a Tsaiko-sized portion for lunch. I couldn’t imagine anyone listening to the head coach talk and then scrimmaging after a cattle call!

  188. Garret June 19, 2008 12:44 pm

Back to work…I’ll check back around midnight here and see if anyone has reported on the bash tonight.

  189. Bulla June 19, 2008 12:59 pm

    ok,

so last night mrs bulla wanted to go out some place that was nice and really expensive, i got kind of squrmish and asked, ‘honey, really expensive?’ and she said ‘very expensive’.

so i took her to the Chevron gas station on keeamoku and beretania

  190. J June 19, 2008 1:01 pm

I’d play after lunch…easier to hit people when they experiencing food coma.

  191. gigi-hawaii Ā© June 19, 2008 1:03 pm

I always buy Chevron because of the techron additive. Today regular was $4.299.

  192. al June 19, 2008 1:15 pm

    homey….#69
nah, i was just talking in song.
anyway i signed up only for the cattle call portion of the party.
i guess it doesn’t really matter anyhow, now.

al – okay, gotcha…by golly wow. (yeah, that was chawan lame)

gigi – Did you know that Aloha Petroleum has a top tier rating…same as Chevron. Did you also know that Aloha Petroleum supplies gas to Costco. Did you know that today regular gas at Costco is $4.199 per gallon.

  198. gigi-hawaii Ā© June 19, 2008 1:34 pm

On the way back home, our cab driver told us she swears by Chevron and Shell gas because all the others make her car shake. Take it from the expert!

Her car was a Lincoln Town Car, I believe.

PB–for shirt info, click on my name above….

gigi – gas in Hawaii is only manufactured by two companies so all gas in Hawaii either comes from Tesoro or Chevron. The difference is in the additives that are added depending on who sells the gas (i.e. Techron for Chevron;VPower for Shell)

  222. (Jesse) James June 19, 2008 2:27 pm

UA makes a muumuu….where can I get one???

Instead of the initial $25 cost they told her it would be $40. My daughter called me and I went down there and said to either take the $25 or we walk out because of unsatisfactory service. They took the $25 and said something in Vietnamese as I left smiling. My daughter was smiling too because she said her nails look so pretty…she’s going to be high maintenance for some lucky guy.

    Kazz . . .

There are two types of chest compressions. The first type helps with CPR. The second type gets you in trouble.

DAT one got me outta lurker mode!

  264. wafan June 19, 2008 4:02 pm

    Homey . . .

HA! I know I look stupid and funny but I am not THAT stoopid. Definitely that funny looking, though.

Trying to get me in trouble with the Tsai-kettes. And worse with the Tsai-kos. HA! I am sure Kazz will be able to come up with his own name(s). I just hope he will not shout out any names while in the throes of the CPR chest “compressions”.

As A-Sports already alluded in an earlier post. That would be untoward behavior for any Tsai-ko.

  265. Wena June 19, 2008 4:49 pm

SteveM reminded me to wear my Tsaiko shirt, so I have to go dig it out now.

  279. chawan_cut June 19, 2008 5:52 pm

wow, i didn’t get as much flak as i thought i would.

  280. NYUH June 19, 2008 6:45 pm

In my weekly visit to B&N I looked at the Sporting News review of the Warriors. They pick them 5th in the WAC after La Tech. They picked LWJ as the underachiever of the year in the WAC. Ouch.

  281. SojuNTaegu June 19, 2008 7:16 pm

Here is the pre-season ranking that scout.com gave the Warriors. 80th in the Nation:

    80. Hawaii 2007 Record: 12-1
This might not be pretty. Hawaii will still wing the ball around with veteran backup Tyler Graunke ready to step in for Colt Brennan, but losing all four starting receivers and head coach June Jones will mean a major freefall from the success of the last two years. The defense has to replace seven starters.

  282. Garret June 19, 2008 7:50 pm

Sporting News had UH at #5 in the WAC? They put UH lower than pretty much everyone else, and I already thought UH was being underrated by the other publications!

Lindy has UH #4 in the WAC
Athlon has UH #4 in the WAC
Phil Steele has UH #3 in the WAC (tied with Nevada)
Sure Fire Scouting has UH #2 in the WAC

  283. Garret June 19, 2008 7:52 pm

    chawan_cut,

I’d never give you flak about that–I thought your photos were pretty cool. Tsai’s Bldg was a really nice shot…and I noticed what types of tenants that building had…

  284. bonar June 19, 2008 7:54 pm

the next few years will be critical to UH. They have taken the right steps to secure most of the top local recruits, such as Coach Mack making home visits. However, my feeling is that the top three local recruits every year will still be difficult “gets” given the lure of the top PAC 10 teams and their state-of-the-art facilities. What about the skill positions? Who will be able to step into the homes of inner city -high school players and get them to come to Hawaii? JC skill players? Much of the success there can be attributed to JR-he’s gone. The lure of a high powered offense to attract skill players from high school and JC? Did that disappear with JJ’s departure?

  285. Kekoa (iPhone) June 19, 2008 8:54 pm

Ronnie & Rich bash is well into hour #3 and it is Jammin’! Good fun, food, fellowship, and friends on a level way out there beyond the cosmos! St is now doing an encore of ” da lion go sleep tonight!”

  286. KonaGold June 19, 2008 9:02 pm

I hear this alot..so I wanted to set the record straight…Paipai and Manti are NOT related…basically they grew up in the same neighborhood, and they families all know each other and everybody call each other “cousin” but, they are not related.

ok, this probably isnā€™t the smartest thing to do (but after the bull pic, what is??), and my friends have warned me about doing this, but iā€™ll post one last picture from Guam to show that the Tsaikos are omnipresent. that or just the coincidence of it all is too much..
i donā€™t want to embarrass or offend THE Princess or Mrs Wai in any way (and if I do, Iā€™m truly sorry), but i just had to share it. whatā€™s the chances of 1) having a store named this, IN Guam, and 2) me being IN Guam to see it. i couldnā€™t believe it.

i know iā€™ll get a rash of jokes and comments, but i can handle. i donā€™t mean any harm. its all in fun. again, what a coincidence?!? (iā€™ll just go into hiding after this and maybe come out when football season starts).

and that was the closest i got to the store. so no jokes there. just be respectful of THE Princess & Mrs. Wai. you can joke about me all you want, but remember to be courteous to them.

Com’n Chawan, make it happen. Go ask, or did u already?
If you get turned down, then go into hiding. j/k
You not lame, no sked, I pray for u, that your dream
    will come true. šŸ™‚

  290. Hoohiki June 19, 2008 10:00 pm

On another site, it was written that 5 UH and 5 SMU coaches going to Samoa for a joint venture to coach clinics for the kids there. I guess it’s another one of JJ’s altruistic gesture. Going to Samoa to do clinics is a great idea of course especially for recruiting purposes. However, UH should do their own “venture”. I wouldn’t trust JJ and especially RB when competing for a recruit. Heck, RB was calling some UH recruits to reconsider and join SMU after they verbally committed to UH. Friendship is only skin deep when it comes to competitive sports. Each man for himself and JJ and RB proved that. Just some bitter taste left in my mouth.

  291. wassufan June 19, 2008 10:34 pm

have heard that WR stutzman is going to commit somewhere BEFORE his sr. season starts.
    ST can you confirm this?

It was so nice to see everyone; too may to name all. Met some people but too tired to remember all. Maybe one – midnight(?). He did the best at singing Mack the Knife.

Too bad I gotta work tomorrow; I’m sure the rest of them are still having a blast.

Well, it’s time to go to bed already. Hope everybody got home safe! Enjoy work in the morning… šŸ˜€

  295. SteveM June 20, 2008 2:42 am

This is LizKauai from SteveM and Peaches’ house.
The bash was a blast! Besides Jason the crooner, PridePeriod and RK really kicked the singing up several notches. I especially loved the Hawaiian songs, Mrs. Kekoa was in good voice and Wreck and Company’s Kanaka Wai Wai was the show-stopper with a circle of aloha and everything!

Mahalo to Wassup Doc who brought me something great for my ailing footsies.
Calvin made it from Kona and plenty of lurkers and friends made their way to wish Rich a belated Happy Birthday and welcome Ronnie back home.

Midnight, whom we met at the Sugar Bowl, was among the Tsai-kos who wowed us with fine karaoke skills.

I missed Esme tonight – but Mrs. Bulla was letting it rip on the mike and on the dance floor to keep me from being toooooo sad!

There is nothing like being surrounded by a room full of Tsai-kos to make your cares and pains go away!

    It is love personified.

Nitey nite and sweet dreams to all!

Homey, James and Koakame, I hope all of you made a safe journey home and if you haven’t made it home yet, you’re heading in the wrong direction…

    INSIDE SLANT
    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/wac/hawaii.htm
The race for one of the most glamorous jobs in college sports ā€” Hawaii quarterback ā€” was a dead heat at the end of spring ball.

  299. haYntexan June 20, 2008 4:11 am

i’ve been a rainbow warrior fan for a long time, so i recently attended the June Jones football camp last week and i can tell you that it was fantastic. Coach Jones has put together a first class coaching staff and the excitement in Dallas is growing for SMU football. Every high school coach who attended was very impressed and most commented that it was the first football camp they attended where they actually learned something they could use. I guess I’ll be rooting for the SMU Mustangs as well as te Hawaii Rainbow Warriors for now on! Maybe a BCS bowl berth for both teams, that would be a dream!

  300. NYUH June 20, 2008 4:14 am

    SPRING MOVERS:

QB Inoke Funaki ā€” The junior made a charge during spring ball, proving that he is a serious contender for the starting job. His mobility could give the Warriors offense an added dimension.

RB Jake Heun ā€” The 6-foot-1, 255-pound junior impressed coaches with his power. He is a transfer from City College of San Francisco and he fits the profile of a Hawaii running back ā€” thick and tough.

WR Joe Avery ā€” The 6-foot-5 freshman stood out with his size and athleticism, two traits that pay dividends as an outside receiver in the run-and-shoot. He had trouble with drops, though, and might be a year away from making a big impact.

QUOTE TO NOTE: “We had some talented, veteran guys, and they were allowed to ad-lib a little more. We’re going to tighten things up a little bit.” ā€” Hawaii coach Greg McMackin, telling the Star-Bulletin how this year’s offense will differ from last year.

That is great news. JJ did great things for Hawaii and Hawaii fans are forever grateful.

we all stayed up late last year to watch the rainbow warriors, i think they became everyone’s unofficial favorite. my hawaii relatives directed me to this blog.

This Washington State safety really is having problems. Ticketed on his way home from jail is pretty bad…

Troubled Washington State football player Xavier Hicks Jr. has been ticketed for driving with a suspended license as he was driving home from jail.

Hicks, 21, was released from the Whitman County Jail on Wednesday morning after serving a 45-day sentence and drove toward Pullman.

But he did not have a valid driver’s license, so jail personnel contacted Pullman police. Police stopped Hicks when he entered town and issued a misdemeanor ticket.

Hicks had just concluded his sentence in the Colfax jail for stealing a debit card last September and for putting rubbing alcohol in his roommate’s contact-lens case in January.

I don’t understand why, with ratings declining and the team struggling, that NBC extended their TV deal with Notre Dame by 5 years.

On the heels of churning out the ugliest ratings numbers in the 17 years of the arrangement and without an athletic director to micromanage the final details, the University of Notre Dame still managed to coax another ā€œI doā€ out of NBC Sports on Thursday.

The two sides jointly announced a five-year extension of the contract to televise Notre Dame football home games, running from 2011 to 2015.

The 1.9 season rating during NDā€™s 3-9 thud in 2007 was by far the worst since the contract went into effect in 1991 ā€” well below the previous low of 2.4 logged in both former coach Bob Davieā€™s final season (2001) and the middle year of former coach Tyrone Willinghamā€™s three-season run (2003). A ratings point represents 1 percent of the 112.8 million television households in the U.S.

For comparisonā€™s sake ND garnered a 3.6 rating during current coach Charlie Weisā€™ first season (2005), the best numbers since the Lou Holtz Era that ended in ā€™96.

  309. Garret June 20, 2008 5:02 am

Duke was able to get out of paying a penalty clause for breaking their contract with Louisville because they argued they had so bad of a team that any team could replace them. It saved them some money but sure didn’t show pride in their school!

A Franklin, Ky., Circuit Court judge sided with a devilishly clever argument and ruled in favor of Duke University yesterday in a breach of contract lawsuit brought forth by the University of Louisville.

Judge Phillip J. Shepherd agreed with Dukeā€™s lawyers ā€” the football team is so bad that any replacement would do.

U of L sued Duke for $450,000 ā€” or a series with another Atlantic Coast Conference opponent ā€” after the Blue Devils backed out of a four-game football contract with three dates remaining.

The contract called for a penalty of $150,000 per game if a date with a ā€œteam of similar statureā€ could not be arranged.

Dukeā€™s lawyers argued the Blue Devils, which have a record of 6-45 over the past five seasons, were so bad that any team would be a suitable replacement.

The name is Warriors now, not Rainbow Warriors. Although many of us still refer affectionally to the “Bows”

  311. Garret June 20, 2008 5:05 am

This is not great for Jason Rivers–another unknown WR is getting a lot of praise by the Titans. I do like the example they gave about how Bennett was an undrafted free agent WR (like Bess, RGM, Rivers, and Hawthorne) and ended up earning a $30 mil contract.

During offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdingerā€™s first stint with the Titans, an unheralded receiver came out of nowhere to elevate an unheralded corps.

Drew Bennett, an undrafted free agent in 2001, was a fixture for his six seasons in Tennessee. Last offseason he departed for the Rams and a $30 million contract.

Granted, itā€™s early, but a similar success story seems to be developing in Heimerdingerā€™s second go-round with the Titans. Receiver Biren Early, undrafted last season, has been one of the teamā€™s biggest stars this offseason.

On a team searching for playmakers, his emergence couldnā€™t come at a better time.

Ealy has regularly worked with the first team in three-receiver sets. When starter Justin Gage was excused on Wednesday, Ealy lined up opposite Justin McCareins with the first unit.

Ealy has a friend in quarterback Vince Young. They worked out together in Houston, Youngā€™s hometown, leading up to training camp last year, Ealy said he expects them to hook up again next month.

ā€œHe is physical, has great hands,ā€™ā€™ Young said. ā€œHis work ethic and things like that are showing a whole lot.ā€™ā€™

Ealy should serve as an example to incoming players who didnā€™t arrive with such a high status, Scaife said. The Titans released Ealy after training camp last August, but were impressed enough to sign him to the practice squad.

Back from the doctor and my 60,000 mile check up.

Aside of an oil change and some wear and tear things seem to be holding up okay.

Looks like a lot of people are still trying to recover from last night. I wonder if a few are still trying to figure out where they are and how they got there. HA! You guys better call in quick — and remember the fake coughs! Or maybe the pitiful sounding moans will be sufficiently convincing.

    HA!

  319. SteveM June 20, 2008 7:02 am

    Good morning everyone!

Just got back from dropping LizKauai off at the airport and catching up.
We might be getting a little too old for this late night – off to work routine. šŸ˜

There was Tina and 21 Tsai-kos forming the circle for Kanaka Wai Wai with Robert Kekaula singing in the center. This was after midnight.

Leaving a little early (1:30 AM) so Genji’s could close, was Addahknowjoe, Addahknowsports, prideperiod, RK, Ralph, JaM, Jason, James, Koakane, homey, WreckinEyez, HiFlyer, LizKauai, Peaches and me. It was 7-8 hours for most of us. Gotta do these kinds of things on a night when most of us don’t work the next day. šŸ˜•

But it was fun and great meeting Rich2176 and Ronnie!

    Getting sleepy…

  320. gigi-hawaii Ā© June 20, 2008 7:04 am

hey, Liz and Jason, I noticed you posted comments on my blog after 2:00 this morning! Wow! How can you function today? Liz, are you going to work?

Looks like I missed RK’s singing. If I’d known he was going to be there, I would have insisted to hubby that we stay. What time did Kekaula show up?

    LizK . . .

Whatever you do, remember not to fall asleep on your keyboard.

The other week I asked one of my boys if he had a nice nap in class. He denied it. I had to laugh because the keyboard left key indentions on the right side of his face. It was hilarious! His next teacher asked him if he enjoyed his nap.

  325. Stretch June 20, 2008 7:46 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

What a looooooong day yesterday. golf and drinking, then drinking and eating, then at the end it was just drinking. Sad part is that I have to do it over again today. I will be sleeping well this weekend!!

Thanks to everyone who showed up. It was a great night of 50+ Tsaikos!! Nice to meet the new people who came out and some of the Tsaikos-In-Training. I hope to see some new people posting today.

#312, yes, I read that JR was 11th out of 12 receivers in camp. I wonder if he still has the nagging injuries.

    Aloha Tsakos, Tsaikettes & Lurkers….

What a day. Stretch, Sleeze & I hacked away on the golf course knowing the hi-lite would be a well-planned blog bash. We picked up A-Joe on the way, and were greeted by WassupDoc on our arrival. (W-Doc – thank you so much for the gift and card!)

Got inside the club to meet around 50 of the warmest, funniest, talented people to share good laughs, good food, and great entertainment.

There are too many people to thank for all of the well-wishes, but a special shout-out to Al, SteveM, and Kathy (who arranged the cake through Margo), and everyone else that made the night memorable.

Pride, Liz, Jason, RK, James, Midnight, UHFan808(what was that provactive Tone Loc song you sang?), and of course ST w/ The Lion sleeps tonight, kept us entertained. Some emotional moments also with the Hawaiian songs, but Jason topped off the evening by singing Three Times a Lady to Ronnie, and then coming over to me and singing the last verse….hmmmmm…..

Head is still hurting a bit, and I apologize to everyone I’ve left out. Homey, homey, homey….

I can’t wait to come back and meet all of you great folks again.

  333. bonar June 20, 2008 8:48 am

It is pretty unbelievable how ND’s popularity transcends wins/losses. Part of the appeal could be explained by church/religion influences over the casual fan. After all, what is there not to like about Notre Dame the institution.

  334. jm2375 June 20, 2008 10:11 am

Everybody must still be sleeping. Must be very quiet. NOT!!

WAKE UP!!! IT’S TIME TO GET GOING!! šŸ˜Æ Almost lunch time. Some of us have been at work for hours.

Guess we gotta get Beau and Al’s puppies and all da roosters and peacocks to make plenny noise.

Anybody wanna a peacock? Get plenny by my house. Would appreciate the quiet if they weren’t around.

What’s dis rumor of Billy Ray committing to another school?

We want him at UH playing for his Bro’ – Craig, the man.

One thing we always admired about Craig was his immediate commitment to UH after graduating from St Louis even tho’ the win/loss record was horrible. He, then, set the STANDARD for every slotback wearing a Warrior uniform. It was Craig who laid the cornerstone and others have added to that foundation and the torch will now be passed on to the next generation of UH slotbacks.

I personally like the “low” rankings and the sweetness of success when the Wariors win games.
