  37. Garret July 19, 2009 8:47 am

The SEC sure spends a ton of money on recruiting…

The University of Tennessee is the runaway spending leader, according to the findings of a Press-Register investigation into recruiting costs for major sports programs among the SEC’s 11 public institutions. Expenditure totals from 2006-08 found that the Vols spent an average of $1.15 million annually on football recruiting.

Auburn football ranked second with a three-year average of $705,125, followed by LSU ($662,773), current national champion Florida ($599,818) and Georgia ($521,174). Alabama ($285,649) rated a relatively cheap 10th on the list, ahead of only South Carolina ($273,909).

Overall, Auburn was a clear pacesetter in recruiting spending among the three major sports, placing in the top three annually for football, basketball and baseball. Coach Jeff Lebo’s men’s basketball program topped the SEC with a three-year average of $303,371, more than double the average hoops recruiting expenses at Alabama ($125,190), as well as last year’s divisional champs, Tennessee ($131,337) and LSU ($120,878).

Arkansas ($82,670) averaged the most among baseball programs, with Auburn ($67,627) ranking third behind Kentucky ($74,918).

“That’s their biggest cost, just the actual flight, particularly when you’re talking about recruiting kids and bringing in kids from everywhere,” said Brent Hubbs, a radio host who also runs Volquest.com, Tennessee’s Rivals.com site. “This is the program that sent a coach to Hawaii to bring in a couple of kids. They’ve had players from Oregon, Washington, California.

“They are such a non-regional team from a recruiting standpoint. They recruit much more nationally than, say, Texas or Georgia or Florida.”

  38. A-House July 19, 2009 8:48 am

    Wow, ST:

  40. Garret July 19, 2009 8:48 am

I wish that Tennessee would decide to save a little money and stop recruiting in Hawaii…and didn’t they offer a certain athlete in Samoa before UH?

Tennessee’s 2008 roster featured two players from California, including starting tailback Arian Foster. Among recent Vols teams, starting quarterback Erik Ainge hailed from Oregon, NFL first-round receiver Robert Meachem was from Oklahoma, and defensive linemen Jesse Mahalona and J.T. Mapu both were recruited out of Hawaii.

“Just one kid from Hawaii is a good example,” former LSU athletic director Skip Bertman said. “When you fly out there, your coach is coming back quickly. I’m not saying that should be a private plane. That’s kind of out there. But let’s say you go to California and you use a private plane and you pay $22,000 because you want to be back the next day so you can go somewhere else to recruit.

“I would do whatever it takes for the coach to recruit, because recruitment is everything. You either have the best athletes or you don’t.”

  43. Garret July 19, 2009 8:53 am

Another article goes over how recruiting has become faster and with more scrutiny each year.

But as expenditures have increased, so has the public’s love affair with the world of recruiting. The proliferation of recruiting-based Internet networks at all schools has made stars — willing or not — out of high school prospects while also increasing pressure on football and basketball coaches to land top talent each year.

“To me, (recruiting) is the whole world,” Ole Miss football coach Houston Nutt said. “It’s gotten faster, quicker. There’s more exposure on recruiting. It’s almost like a sport within itself now.”

One of the toughest questions: Where is today’s recruiting monster ultimately headed?

Said Gadsden City High School football coach Joe Billingsley: “The day it becomes more important than actually playing the game, it will be the downfall of what we’re trying to accomplish.”

โ€œThe players and equipment staff worked with Nike to design a contemporary set of uniforms that would represent Baylor well and appeal to recruits.โ€

Light blue flash again – wiped out my earlier post-in-progress.

Glad that we all had fun yesterday so matter event we attended. For me, it was another great day at work-which-is-really-fun. Must have been upwards of 3,000 people at the Energy Festival yesterday. Our Focus The Sun activity was really a big hit. Lots of people came over to high-five me over the bill I worked so hard to pass – including a veto override on Wednesday.

Las Vegas – I am so sorry to hear about your dog. Twice in the past seven months we said goodbye to two of our cats. Fortunately, we’ve gotten something of a reprieve – not a pardon – with Saturn The Dog’s lymphoma, but ….

By the way, we passed our interview with Jaspurrs, a sweet lack cat, who’ll be coming to live with us in early August. Our friends are moving to the continent for a new position – they’ll be back in three years – and the folks who are renting their house and taking care of the other animals didn’t like the noise Jaspurrs makes when she breathes.

Finally, DrDoc and his brothers & sisters could use your collective good wishes. Their mother has gone into her final hours – fortunately, she long ago set up a living will with advanced directives so they don’t have to make the decisions. She’s going to have her ashes scattered at the base of the tree planted in the side yard of their church during her middle daughter’s memorial service several years ago.

Off to do housework & yardwork and then to the gym for an intensive bodywork. Have a good day everyone

I think it’s a ploy by ST to print pics with “generalized” captions to entice us to begin asking probing questions – especially for Dunnachie who we hope will maintain the 60-70+ yards punts consistently.

Gave up on UH for tickets to the WSU game. My brother would only be able to get two tickets since thats what he’s a season ticket for. Also, UH doesn’t even know what section the tickets are at Qwest. Got tickets through UH to last years OSU game and got baked. Those of you who attended know what I’m talking about. Found my tickets on the WSU website and only a $5 service charge. The only drawback is I will be sitting on the cougar sideline. Hopefully UH will be better organized by 2011 when they come up here to play the Huskies.

Can’t wait to see Dunnachie in action! It’s been ages since we’ve had a legit punter. Grasso LOST games with his punting. I have a hunch this guy is going to win some for us. I thought that it was ironic that Grasso at times had ridiculed Ingram’s nervousness or concern about a game or its conditions. The thing is that regardless of the weather conditions or crucial moments, Jake Ingram always delivered & Grasso always choked. Here’s hoping Dunnachie will keep opponents’ Special Teams on the defensive for a change!

so true Brew the Raiders need a coach and a qb that understands how to get the ball down field and over the top. Russell spends too much time eating fried chicken, ribs and spending his millions. He needs to learn how to be a qb and a gunslinger. I hope the Maryland receiver is a player when the lights go on…AFC championship here we come…

Study found that drinking 40 ounces of coffee a day (500 mg of caffeine, the same as 2 lattes or cappuccinos) could reverse memory problems from Alzheimerโ€™s, and caffeine even protected mice from getting Alzheimerโ€™s even though they were bred to develop the disease.

Update for ST…it doesn’t sound good for Paula and American Idol. I didn’t realize that Paula just got a new agent.

According to a Los Angeles Times report, David Sonenberg says he doesn’t have a proposal for a new contract for Abdul. He says it doesn’t appear she’ll be back.

Sonenberg began representing Abdul a few weeks ago.

  117. Garret July 19, 2009 9:38 pm

Paula supporters are trying to use Twitter to convince the AI producers to give her a new contract.

For a time Saturday evening, the “Keep Paula” movement made it to the No. 2 slot (see left) on Twitter’s much-contested trending topics list — falling behind only people twittering their support for Indonesia in the aftermath of this week’s terror attacks.

And it wasn’t just “Idol” fans showing their support. From across Idol Nation and the Idols Live tour bus itself, former cast members were chiming in with their support.

off season training is actually the indicator of how prepared and committed the team is…..can’t train during season, only maintain. that is why football especially is a 12 month commitment…..
