Big Wednesday

The first Wednesday next month — Feb. 2 — is the Warrior football team’s busiest shopping day. Not only is that the first day recruits may sign binding national letters of intent, it also is the tryout day for walk-on players. Only walk-on prospects enrolled in UH’s spring semester are eligible for the tryout. The walk-on winners will be allowed to participate in the offseason conditioning program, including the Super Games competition, and spring practice. Even starting quarterback Bryant Moniz had to go through the walk-on tryout before joining the Warriors in 2009.

corey

Linebacker Corey Paredes underwent successful surgery on his left shoulder and should be 100 percent for the start of training camp, as well as for his wedding next month. Quite remarkable he made all of those tackles and played all of those games with a hurt shoulder.

Happy birthday to Hawaiian Mission Academy basketball center Nesi Bechard.

Yes, it looks like a Big Wednesday next month! Hope for the best!

It’s rather hazy outside, but as soon as my grandson wakes up from his nap, we’ll stroll through the neighborhood. I love Hawaii.

Tryout guys from 2010 who were on the past season’s roster: D.J. Armbrust, Gus Cunningham, Bennett Nicola, Kyle Niiro, Elmer Lim, Scott Collins and Casey Purdy.

    Thank you Mr. Tsai.

Just watched the video of Ted Williams, the man with the golden voice. It was very touching.

  16. Derek January 6, 2011 9:38 am

Advertiser reported today’s paper that Tuumalo committed to Boise St. This is really old news. It was already reported on the website at Scout.com that he committed to the Broncos sometime around Christmas or even before that. What’s up with that?

I guess Punahou players don’t want to play for the home team, i.e. Ioane and Makaula, Toma, Hilliard, Teo, etc. The only person from Punahou recently that is playing for Hawaii is Shutter and that’s only because he changed his mind from New Mexico when Rocky Long either was fired or resigned. Oh, Kenny Patton played here. Are the Punahou coaches telling their players to go to the mainland if they can? There are other examples such as John Kamana, Jason Ching, Mosi Tatupu, and many others. Is it the private school syndrome where they are just too good to play for Hawaii and they are better than that. Don’t get me wrong. Going to Notre Dame and USC and Stanford are great institutions and going to see the mainland and the world is good. Is going to Boise St. for the education or for mostly the football? I would submit Hawaii’s academic standing is very good and our football team needs the good local players to stay at home and help the team try to get to the next level.

But, what do I know, people can go where they want to go. As a UH fan, I’d like to see our Warriors do great things, not do good, but great. If I’m stirring the pot, so be it, that’s the intent. Happy Thursday!

  17. NorthShoreFan January 6, 2011 9:44 am

It always amazes me how many walk on players earn scholies and become standout players in the league and even make it to the big show. Proves talent analysis is not always accurate. Hard to measure an athletes heart, determination and willingness too work hard and achieve. The Warrior program has done a great job with it’s program and it will be exciting to see who are the “Hidden Warriors” for this year.

  18. NorthShoreFan January 6, 2011 9:48 am

Derek #16…me thinks a lot of Warrior fans feel the same way. Whatever the reasons the keeds chose, we wish them well. The opportunity to get a free education is the main thing. Just hope they take full advantage of the educational opportunities and not just concentrate of the athlethics.

    Good morning gang!

I would love to see the ones that stayed in Hawaii to play for UH do better in the islands, job wise, after it is all over, than those that went away. NOT to say that I don’t wish those that went away all the success they deserve. Just saying that I would like those that stayed local, to do better so that those that went away and got that “mainland” edge can come back and work for them.

  28. Derek January 6, 2011 10:34 am

Per a prior post, if you didn’t know by now, Trent McKinney, QB out of Mililani, has verbally committed to Montana. McKinney was listed as one of the top 20 recruits from Hawaii per Scout and Rivals. I thought he played well this season, but I don’t think he a next holy grail.

Too small, barely 6’0″ at best, too slow, 4.7 at best. I did like his throwing motion, however.

Mariota by comparisons is big at 6’3″ to 6’4″ and a jet, 4.4, 40. I believe he will be great at Oregon. Reminds me size wise like Jake Locker, except Locker is bigger right now. If Mariota puts on about 20 to 30 lbs. he will be a load.

  31. Derek January 6, 2011 10:46 am

Andrew Luck is staying at Stanford for his redshirt Junior season. We wants his degree in architectual design and is on track to graduate in the spring of 2012. This guy has his head screwed on right. He’s a team player all the way. The money and the NFL will still be there.

He will be one of the leading candidates for the Heisman Trophy and Stanford has a chance to compete for the National Championship this coming season. Harbaugh has done a great job at Stanford. It will be interesting what Harbaugh does now that Luck has made his decision. He just might stay one more year before he goes to the NFL. And that would be not good for my beloved 49ers who I am hoping they land Harbaugh now. We need him to get a good QB to help the Niners get to the playoffs. 49ers should release Troy Smith and David Carr soon. Alex Smith will be a free agent as his contract is expiring. Alex is not a bad QB and if he has the proper schooling he can be pretty good. This is where I think Harbaugh can teach him. Smith needs to “go down to mamby pamby lane and get some self-confidence that Jack wagon.” (Geico commercial).

  34. BigIslandkurt January 6, 2011 11:12 am

The culture of Punahou…..and Kamehameha to a an extent, is to go away. Again, this is the culture whether you playing football or just a simple ol student. Graduates of these schools go on to Pepperdine, Duke,MIlls, Stanford. The culture actively plays up the value of leaving Hawaii. And this culture is supported by teachers, counselors, coaches, parents, alumni. So given the culture, why would it be any different for football players at these schools? Most of them will leave. We will be blessed to land one or two each year. But most will leave.

    BIK

When will KFVE show sports in HD?

As soon as they can successfully air games in REGULAR definition.

What really ticked me off about K-5 is the lack of consistent production quality with regards to live UH games.

I mean I saw about 5 minutes of the Merrie Monarch Festival and the production quality was far greater than anything they’ve done for UH.

Too many miscues on replays, too many glitches on the broadcast, and the picture quality seems far below regular definition… if that’s even possible.

Only UH football is broadcast on K-5 in HD.

  36. BigIslandkurt January 6, 2011 11:15 am

Certainly there are many great graduates of schools like Punahou and Kamehameha who stay home and attend school in Hawaii. But trust me, the Punahou grad who chooses to go Windward Community College is not the one being celebrated in the alumni newsletter.

    BIK

  37. NCAA January 6, 2011 11:17 am

The rebroadcast of UH football on KFVE did not look like HD to me.

I have linked to your website, pehaps it’s possible to link back?

  40. Support Rainbow Wahine Softball January 6, 2011 11:26 am

The Fresno State Softball fan blog has these UH games listed in the Top 20 of non-conference WAC softball games this upcoming season:

    #1. Hawai’i vs. Oklahoma

This is the game we wanted to see last year at the prestigious Cathedral City Classic, but it was cancelled by rain. Let’s try it again at the same tourney this season. On February 24, it will likely be a family affair in the circle as Wahine junior Stephanie Ricketts takes on Sooners sophomore Keilani Ricketts. It doesn’t get much better than this, as two of the nation’s premier pitchers — who also happen to be sisters — face off in the country’s best in-season tournament.

    #6. Hawai’i vs. Stanford

The Rainbow Wahine were sent to Stanford last season in NCAA regional play and knocked around a Cardinal still reeling from the loss of then-freshman standout pitcher Teagan Gerhart, who was sidelined with a late-season injury. If Gerhart is fully healed and able to go this time around, this February 19 game should be a great early test for Hawai’i at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic hosted by UNLV. The Wahine won two of three against the Cardinal a season ago.

    #11. Hawai’i vs. Oregon

On the same day they meet Stanford at UNLV’s Louisville Slugger Desert Classic, Hawai’i will take on 2010 NCAA Super Regional surprise team Oregon. The Ducks will be having a mini-WAC weekend, facing Nevada in the game immediately preceding this one and tangling with Boise State the following day in the same tournament. Oregon came from behind to defeat the Rainbow Wahine 4-3 last season at the Cathedral City Classic as Ducks freshman pitcher Jessica Moore struck out 12.

    #13. Brigham Young at Hawai’i

Hawai’i and BYU are big rivals in a lot of sports and softball is one of them. BYU had perhaps its most successful season in history a year ago, edging San Diego State by a game to win the MWC title, going 46-13 overall and advancing to NCAA Super Regional play. The Cougars return four All-MWC players from a season ago, but will be hard-pressed to replace conference Player of the Year Angeline Quiocho. This March 17 game at the Hawai’i Spring Fling Tournament could have been a real showcase for the mighty bat of Quiocho, who departed as the MWC’s all-time leader in home runs (66), hits, runs and total bases. BYU will likely be the No. 2 pick behind San Diego State in the MWC preseason coaches poll.

  41. Kazz January 6, 2011 11:27 am

    NCAA,

They look like HD to me.

  42. Kazz January 6, 2011 11:27 am

It’s HD enough so that you can clearly see how the old logos on the worn out turf will not wash away like they are supposed to.

  43. NCAA January 6, 2011 11:30 am

Guess I’m spoiled watching the NFL in HD with all their camera angles.

  44. NCAA January 6, 2011 11:33 am

Show of hands, how many of you carry machetes in your car?

  45. Kazz January 6, 2011 11:37 am

    NCAA,

I used to have an HPD-type issued expandable baton in my car. Someone gave it to me.

    Dunno where it is now…

  46. LizKauai m/ January 6, 2011 11:41 am

NCAA- I have car flags for UH and the Redskins in my car… same thing, eh?

  47. NCAA January 6, 2011 11:48 am

Just wondering because it’s not the first time I read where someone comes out of their car brandishing a machete. Car flags? Swinging that and making the whoosh sound would scare, Guy Hagi. I’m just joking Mr. Tommui!

Those batons sure do sting when whacked. 😯

  48. Kevin January 6, 2011 11:48 am

    #16 Derek

Hey you forgot Dane and Drew Upresa (sp) both Punahou grads who chose to stay home and play for UH. Also Miah – though I don’t think he had any other football related offers.

That said, having attended Punahou the emphasis there is that you should get the best education you can and expand your boundaries however you see fit. To support this the school does a lot to bring mainland schools down and talk to students about the virtues of attending and going away + they even used to (not sure if they still do) host an alumni day where former students come back to talk to seniors about what it’s like at their school. As a result, there isn’t necessarily the apprehension associated with going away and hopefully the educational choice is made regardless of location.

This definitely translates to our student athletes as very few make it to the NFL so they’re counseled to see out the best life opportunity possible. Also I should note that when I was there if you could afford to go away for the most part EVERYONE did so in many instances even our athletes are thinking this way as it’s just part of the culture (note Iolani is also very similar though they haven’t produced as many football prospects of late).

    Just my two cents.

Our family wants to thank all of the Tsaiko Ohana for their continued support and for wanting CALEN FRIEL there in Hawaii. It has been a long and rough road for CALEN who has progressed in his journey to be a Warrior. University of Hawaii is one of the hardest schools to get into based on academics. Calen had only a commitment letter, meaning he had to get into UH through the front door. Not easy! Calen had been just passed along from grade to grade through out his entire educational career. It was not discovered until he came to live with our family, (we are his Aunt and Uncle) that Calen had a learning disorder. For the last 6 months, we have had Calen on a strict academic and athletic work out, to assist in his growth, especially in dealing with his learning disorder. He will have to work harder, and be kept on a tight routine. But we feel confident, that with his private tutor…he will be able to bring home the grades, and be a success on the field. We never want to see Calen or the team hurt by him not being able to play a big game due to academics.

There are so many people who helped us create the VILLAGE of people who have made it possible for Calen to be ready, both academically and physically….if you see them, thank them for being part of Calen’s village, his Ohana who has worked hard…through good times and bad….everyone has been there for him. But most of all I need to thank my husband the OJD who has spent money, time, energy, (flying back and forth to Hawaii to keep the schedule going) in keeping Calen on his right path, to get to the journey he dreamed of. It was never a sure thing for Calen. But we are blessed to have the finances to get him ready and hopefully keep him successful in the classroom. It will be hard, but he hopefully will not let you down. Funny, we have been looking at the schedule…and long road trips will be hard. Going to have to study hard to just to keep up.

The Ocasek Family…my husband and I can not thank them enough! Words can not express our gratitude for all of your love and support. And helping us get Calen his drivers license. LOL!

Joe Onosai, his LIFE COACH! And Mentor for his physical conditioning. And his spiritual path with God.

Ken, and the Sylvan Learning Center family at the Kahala Mall.

Cathy Kahoohanohano, who is his other tutor who helped with more SAT prep work.

Zach, his Coach at Athletes Performance in Carson, California. Zach again, thanks for your support, and for being Calen’s biggest fan!

Dr. Terri White, who helped us, get Calen on the right direction for his LD.

Pudgy Friel, his Tutu, who has fought for what was the best thing for Calen in his mission to get to college.

Coach Jumawan, his private Boxing Coach. Coach, I know I thanked you…but really, you and Robin have been an inspiration for Calen.

Dr. Jim Tibone, for putting Calen on the eating plan…that keeps him lean and mean! Thanks so much Doc.

And to Mama, his Maternal Grandmother, who cared and loved him when he was a sickly baby. Mama thank you.

And to Calen’s family for trusting us to take him to get him to this level.

Dr. Carl Lehman, for keeping those allergies at bay! LOL.

But my husband and I want to thank you…for wanting him there at UH. It has been a long and very stressful 6 months. Calen did not receive the phone call until 5:10PM Hawaii Time last night. We got the call at 7:13PM LA time from Calen three minutes after Coach Lumpkin called. Since then, the phones here in California have not stopped ringing. Today, he will register for school. Calen has worked so hard to get here, I hope you all will stop by spring ball, and continue supporting him, and hopefully we will see you there. Our jobs, prevent us at times from traveling. But we will be there with SKYPE and other tech tools that keeps us connected when we are apart.

Big Hilo Fan, maybe we can meet when I am back home in Hilo sometime soon. Hopefully next month. The rest of the FAM is getting Calen ready to move to the dorms…and I will let you all know when Calen’s website is up and running. We will try to have new video for you each week. And Calen will keep his personal journal there for you all to read!!!! Part of his study program we have him set up with is the journey…and how any child can be a successful student. If you loved the BLIND SIDE, our story is so much deeper.

Before I close I want to say, if I am in the stands, and do not talk…I apologize in advance. Like Calen say’s, ” I am his Aunty with Attitude” and can not talk when watching a game. Gotta focus on him! When his website is up and running, you can see Calen and his training off season and the VILLAGE behind the him who has worked so hard to get him there.

Thank you to all of the Hawaii fans for your support for Calen. I will miss him so much…but his bedroom is here for off season when he trains with some of the best in football.

    MAHALO TSAIKOS!

Sorry did not really get it, had to ask RAINBOW CLIFF about who everyone was! And I am sorry for not answering sooner. But was on the phone last night with Calen and it got late, and I finally had my first night of decent sleep, in more then 6 months. I feel like the 500 pound GORILLA was just taken off my back!

    God Bless you all!

Shaloha from Calen’s Ohana in California.

Thanks for the great story Poly Mom. I first met Calen two years ago at the Ocasek family home and could tell immediately that he was a Friel. I grew up with Paternal grandpa’s two youngest brothers, so knew the family well. I also ran around a bit with his maternal grandpa many years ago too. But I saw Calen again about a month ago with the Ocasek’s again. I was literally blown away by his physical transformation in two years. He does not look like a freshman. He is way bigger and stronger, but still appears to be just as athletic looking as he did two years ago. Not big and bulky, but bigger and athletic. He will make a big impact on the Hawaii football program n the coming years. We commend you, your husband, and the rest of the “village” for your support of Calen. Hopefully his off-season habits will be an influence on the rest of his teammates.

    Calen, you have already won!

  76. kev-1 January 6, 2011 2:56 pm

#31 Derej . . . it doesn’t matter who the niners get as a coach if they keep their faith in Alex Smith they will remain losers. How many times do they have to give him a shot and let him fail before they realize he is not cut out to be an NFL qb? There are so many excuses as to why he has struggled. Come on, if he was as good as people say he is, don’t you think he would have had some success by now? I wish Colt could get the type of opportunity that Alex Smith has gotten. Except it would be different. If given the chance, Colt will prove that he is a good qb. Alex Smith has not.

  77. Ralph January 6, 2011 2:57 pm

thanks for the post Pride, we’ll all help Poly Mom during her absence and cheer Calen on to work hard in the classroom, his athleticism will take care of itself on the field.

Thanks for the post by Poly Mom! Sorry, but I did not see this before; must have been on a trip out of state and no ways near a computer to read the blog.

Thank you, Poly Mom for all that you and your family has done for Calen.

It was posted in yesterday’s blog topic. lol

  82. Garret January 6, 2011 3:18 pm

    PolyMom,

Thank you very much for posting that wonderful story that gave us insight into the difficulties that Calen faced and how determined he must have been to get into UH. I’m sure that Calen will do well at UH and the Warrior team and its fans are fortunate that he has made it into school…but the most important thing to me is that by Calen’s effort, and the efforts of all of the people like your family that has supported him, he will have a chance to get the education that will change his life.

Thank you for everything you and your family have done for Calen. I will cheer loudly for Calen throughout his Warrior career and will follow his development closely. More importantly, I hope that he gets his degree and is able to use his degree to have a wonderful and happy life after he leaves UH.

  83. Kekoa January 6, 2011 3:22 pm

    Heal on Corey!

Myki proposed CC’s be a monthly event during the off season.

    Several reasons come to mind:

➡ Keep our arguements toe-to-toe…like today!

    ➡ Sample different locations.

➡ Apologize for previous month’s outburst.

➡ Have dinner CC for pau hana peeps.

➡ Start new QB arguement wit Pomai.

➡ Try Mongolian BBQ nite out.

➡ Combine dinner w/Movie of week.

    Open to suggestions!

➡ Resolve old issues with Pomai.

  84. NCAA January 6, 2011 3:31 pm

New QB? Not until 2012. I don’t foresee any of the returning QB’s beating out a healthy Moniz during fall camp 2011. If someone does then more power to him.

  85. Slugger January 6, 2011 3:41 pm

    Poly Mom,

We will sure support Calen here. Hope you can get over for games and join us for T-Gates. Calen just needs to know to speak up with the tutors at the academic center and with his advisor sooner rather than later when he needs a little help. All students should use those kinds of resources available to them at UH (or wherever they go to school) cuz they pay for it with their tuition. Getting help = getting A’s.

I tol’ you guys that Calen looked big, not soft, but solid… LOL

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  86. Slugger January 6, 2011 3:42 pm

Great idea about off-FOOTBALL season Cattle Calls, but don’t forget a lot of us support spring sports as well. In February, for example, there are 28 different games/matches scheduled for softball, bseball, men’s volleyball, and men’s basketball and women”s basketball.

And, yes, there are six days of double and even triple games/matches.

Off to two quick meetings before the basketball games. Hope to see some of you tonight at

    The Stan.

Sometimes I don’t understand how a blog as good as yours doesn’t appear easily in research. Thanks you

  92. Kazz January 6, 2011 4:02 pm

Me thinks if Bolla wasn’t around, we would of had a better chance of signing Shawna-Lei Kuehu out of HS. Not saying for sure, but a BETTER chance.

The subject has been discussed many times, but again, a BIG “mahalo” to the kids that decide to play for the real home team regardless of HS!

  93. Kazz January 6, 2011 4:10 pm

This whole thing about local kids playing for UH works both ways too.

I shared this story a few months ago when I was talking to a friend of the family of a local born softball player that is now playing elsewhere. I will not disclose the name or the current university she is at.

In talking with this man, he went on and on about how she got “snubbed” by UH and is now a scholarship player elsewhere. There was a lot of bitterness in his voice and body language and he’s not even of blood relation to this player, just a family friend.

We can’t get all the local kids to come to UH and UH doesn’t necessarily want all of them either.

It’s not as much of a rite of passage that if you are local born, you should get first crack from all UH coaches in all sports and some people need to realize that.

Not saying that this was the case here as I don’t know, but of course you gotta be academically eligible per UH requirements as well. Too often I hear complaints that Coach “X” should have offered this player and that and later to find out that that player never even had the academic requirements needed to attend UH in the first place.

Too many factors, too many “he said, she said” type dramas, etc…

Best thing to do is to cheer on our Warriors and Rainbow Wahine that wear “HAWAII” on their uniforms no matter what.

  94. Kazz January 6, 2011 4:14 pm

    CoolEthan,

I believe one of these days, perhaps at a CC, we should share that beer as while we didn’t make it to the MWC as originally assumed, we got there eventually!

    😆

  106. Kazz January 6, 2011 4:54 pm

Terrible double-booking decision by the WAC. Ralph texts that there are about 100 people in the arena now to watch the Wahine game. The Wahine have averaged 600-800 fans, turnstile count, this season.

The Rainbow Wahine, while not having stellar attendance, will have their numbers and revenues effected as a result of these midweek 5pm games. There will be several more throughout the season.

The double-header ticket policy however is UH’s kuleana… and not a good one thus far.

  107. Kazz January 6, 2011 4:55 pm

    D1,

What? The time machine he found?

Screw the discussions. Let’s hop into that thing and place bets on games that already happened and BUY Kahoolawe and turn that thing into the new UH football off-island training facility.

  108. Kazz January 6, 2011 4:57 pm

Screw the time-space continuim. I WANT MONEY!

  109. A-joe January 6, 2011 5:00 pm

Why do we continue to grumble about our kids leaving for the mainland?

Local athletes have left waaaaaay before Charlie Wedemeyer ever thought of the greener pastures of the midwest and will continue to do so long after you and I are pushing daisies.

We’re gonna lose our best. But…

why can’t we get the best from elsewhere to play for us?

Ask yourselves this: what are we (you and I) doing as a program, a school, a state, as fans- to create a culture, an environment that’s conducive with retaining and attaining top quality local and mainland athletes?

That’s where we need to start.

ahouse…poly mom posted that this morning at 1025 on yesterday’s posting.

and did you mean it was better company because i wasn’t there?

  118. Kekoa January 6, 2011 6:07 pm

W/Doc ~ No reason for alarm. We had all but one of the UH Wahine booster board members present at the CC today. This is another reason why we enjoyed the discourse today…sports diversity. We can throw opinions out on all UH sports, and have fun doinf it.

NCAA ~ The QB talk centered on character issues, and then moved into the R&S schemes. It did get a bit heated, but that’s what made it so interesting! Hey!…we cajol each other about some really goofy stuff until someone like D-1 comes along and makes you go Hmmm…

  119. Kazz January 6, 2011 6:19 pm

    Kekoa,

Character issues? Whasamattah???? Da Conservative Party of America crashed the cattle call and interrupted everyone’s good time????

If the topic on character is what I am thinking you are referring to then quite frankly I am sick of that —- already being discussed as an issue.

Too much gossip into other’s lives is real panty-hose material best left to the sowing circles across the world to harp over while they sip on tea and mend their dresses.

  120. Kekoa January 6, 2011 6:43 pm

PolyMom ~ Calen is a Warrior. That alone speaks volumes of the support and attention he will receive from the Tsai-ko Nation. We are only limited by what the NCAA compliance people allow. If it weren’t for those restrictions, that young man would REALLY be living large on this island!

When you attend your 1st Tsai-ko t-gate, you will meet a small percentage of the folks who are active bloggers/supporters. It may seem like an Army of people, but that’s only because we all get so LOUD when we gather anywhere. If we were a religious order, we’d be like a giant Southern Baptist Revival.

The impressive thing about it is how much fun, food,

family, and fellowship we have. Once you start sampling the variety of dishes available, you will realize how diverse our members really are.

You will meet all the peeps with the off beat blog names, and be face-to-face with Crazies like BHF2, Kazz, Koakane, Homey.

You will enjoy meeting some of the Tsaikettes like Slugger, LizK, Jm2375, UHFan808, myki, juliet &

so many more guys and gals…all devout Tsai-ko’s!

So we eagerly await your participation and celebration of WARRIOR Football with us.

    E komo mai! -Kekoa

  122. Garret January 6, 2011 6:47 pm

I’ve been hearing that this would happen for more than a month now…and it looks like it may be official soon.

Boise State offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin and his wife flew to Austin, Texas, today and were met at the airport by Texas coach Mack Brown’s wife, according to multiple media members who reported sightings of the trio. A photo has been published as well.

Harsin, 34, long has been considered a candidate for the vacant offensive coordinator job at Texas, which could triple or quadruple his salary. Media speculation has put the Texas salary in the neighborhood of $1 million.

Harsin makes $259,520 and has earned a 10 percent raise to $285,472 for next season.

  123. Kazz January 6, 2011 6:48 pm

Last thing about gossip and things that happened that aren’t mainstream news…

Personally, I hear a lot from all kinds with regards to a lot of things UH over the past two years. I never admitted this before and I personally learned to take things with a grain of salt. I smile and appreciate “scoops”, but I’ve learned that I have NOTHING to gain by accepting them as fact or as tools to judge a person.

I don’t have Al’s little birdies or big birdies, but I truly believe in 3 sides to all stories: Side A, Side B, and the TRUTH.

I have no respect for anyone that thrives on gossip.

It’s amazing what one can learn by observing, listening, and keeping quiet.

  124. Garret January 6, 2011 6:48 pm

A week or so ago BSU lost the coach that would have been promoted to OC.

Boise State already has lost wide receivers coach Brent Pease, who became the Indiana offensive coordinator last week. Pease was the likely successor to Harsin.

  125. Pomai January 6, 2011 6:53 pm

Ah come on Kekoa it wasn’t that bad, just a normal tsaiko discussion LOL. What make these cc’s so good is that we all have our own opinions an ideas of what should be or not, but in the end we all support the team. Heck if we all thought the same way what a boring time it would be.

    Polymom !

Many talks with you on the recruiting process of Calen’s journey has

been truly an experience. I am HONORED that you have express so much

information of your concerns about your nephew to me and I was hopefully

able with my own experience give you detail information that could help.

You and your support group has done an AWESOME job with this young man

as your detail story on Calens special needs warmed many Tsaiko hearts here

on the blog and brought interest and care from many bloggers who were MOVED

by your words of endearment and compassion for this extraordinary young man !

I am just THRILLED for him to get his shot to live out his dream playing Division I

football and to receive a college education in which will take dedicated hours

and academic support. You have worked hard during this time as from your words

last night you were happy and relieved that this process has ended on a GREAT

wing and prayer of success !

CONGRATULATIONS to you polymom as I look forward when we are there in person

cheering your “blind side” real story all the way to the finish line !

  151. al January 6, 2011 11:07 pm

mihl..i hear that he likes the way davone bess plays and gets paid.

  152. Ralph January 6, 2011 11:31 pm

Al how do you put a positive spin on losing. Same problem, turn overs, not the kind you eat, the kind that the other team converts to easy points. Saying and mentioning that we got beat on the boards is not being negative, factual, and unfortunately lead to another defeat.

Poor shooting didn’t help either, but that’s the way the game turned out, not negative, it happened. You should come to the game every once in a while. 🙂

  153. Ralph January 6, 2011 11:34 pm

Al Saturday trifecta, Women basketball at 5, MBB at 7:30 then a volleyball fest right after the bb game, come on over and don’t be a monku boy. LOL.

  154. Ralph January 6, 2011 11:35 pm

OH Al, I recorded the games, but after watching it in person I erased them, not a keeper.

  155. al January 6, 2011 11:46 pm

ralphie…okay, they looked sluggish, they had some mental lapses. that turnover by wiseman just as the first half epitomized the way they played.

the ball never found the hole, but, why stop shooting. i’d be telling johnson, barnes, miah, miles, to stop and pop every chance you got. 30 feet out, whatever. amis needs to just keep shooting, too, joston needs to focus on rebounding and causing damage below like he is capable. the points will come, just focus on the point,

i think amis’ return cause some confusion with the bigs. it seems like joston never got in to the swing of things because it seemed he and amis were trying to adjust to each others game. at times it was like, okay who’s the 3 and who’s the 4.

on a positive note, joachim is showing his potential and it couldn’t get much worse than tonight. you will play in games when nothing is in sync and that means the whole team.

but, hey, they won’t play any worse once gibber figures out a proper rotation with this team. with all the interchanging parts going in and out, perhaps he should instead develope a commando raid system where he inserts a whole new five that goes in and starts with a full court press line to line for 5-7 minutes to just energize the crowd and give the tempo of the game a total change up. stop and pop from anywhere.

  156. al January 6, 2011 11:50 pm

ralphie…these are the best kind of games to sit back and watch and rewind and replay. you’ll see that a game this ugly will never be repeated again if this team has any character at all.

i’ll bet the house that we come out smoking guns and stomp bsu on saturday.

  157. Ralph January 7, 2011 12:17 am

Al I have enough memory cells left in the tank that I can remember things without having to spend 3+ hours watching tapes of the men and women games. And the games were ugly because we lost.

I don’t think Amis presence stopped the flow, it happened against Nevada without Amis. Both teams appeared quicker to the ball than UH, why, I don’t know but the number of rebounds and loose ball possession sums it up.

What I’d like to see is more is senior leadership in both the men and women game from the points, they need to be an extension of the coaches, run their offense, create spacing and movement with their passing to give each player a better opportunity to score. As I see it, both seniors, men and women are trying to carry the load and playing one on one and driving to the hoop without a whole lot of success. They need to quicken their reads and pass to the bigs in the paint, or kick it out to an open shooter beyond the arc, but its not happening.

  158. Ralph January 7, 2011 12:27 am

I like the idea of playing a lot of players and Gib’s use of different combos from the stand point that most of his players are new to D1 level, they need game experience and while the learning curve is quite steep, they got to get on the floor.

I hope the wins come with the experience later in the season and hopefully they start peaking prior to the WAC tournament and win it all. But the experience they gain this year will definitely help them next season with a full roster.

Miles needs to be on the floor more because he will be the future point and he needs to gradually build confidence in running Gib’s offense. Did your little birdie tell you if Gib has a point recruit that can easily step up to the D1 level and run his team other than Bobby Miles. All the other guards appear to be #2 position players.

  159. al January 7, 2011 12:48 am

well, bobby miles i like. i like his court presence and he is not trying to do too much out there. i believe that is be design. everything is still moving in double time for him. once the game slows down for him he will let fly and show us all what a prolific scorer he can be. in hs he was not the point guard as evidenced by his 28 ppg and 14 rpg.

enter, gerry blakes an early signing. a pg who fell under the radar because he transferred schools after an injury. word is he is lighting it up for his team and individually. these days you want a pg who not only plays like a bob cousy but can score like an oscar robertson. yah, i know showing my age.

and then there’s miah. the seemingly diminutive slotback is actually a very good baller. give him time and he too will go off.

  160. al January 7, 2011 12:53 am

i think gibber picks up one more big in the march signing period. he might hold off on the fourth and last scholie because he will only lose zane johnson the following year and may want to save that one so he can have two frosh in two years from now.

of course if the basketball version of the holy grail appears he gotta go grab em.

i just hope gibber’s kids really like punahou and the surf that they won’t agree to another move in 4-5 years.

  161. al January 7, 2011 12:58 am

ralphie #157…truly a fact of the matter is that our points work hard. they get a lot of effort out of their God given talents respectively. however, keisha and hiram are not as ideally quick as one would like at this level.

they do bust their butts, but, sometimes they get destroyed by the quicker pg’s.

now, salter had the stuff, but, not the head.

  162. al January 7, 2011 12:59 am

ralphie…if you are still up, i leave you with this.

who’s your pick for raider’s hc?

  163. al January 7, 2011 1:08 am

if it were me…i’d go after june jones.

jj could handle al davis and al davis could handle jj. it would work because both are mavericks and aren’t afraid to shoot from the hip.

then i’d go after davone bess. he would be an instant fan favorite with his roots in oakland and his star quality would elevate. then i’d make sure i draft greg salas, kealoha, and the like.

too bad colt got hurt. jj would certainly have given him a chance.

    etc, etc, etc……..

  165. Pomai January 7, 2011 4:21 am

#163 – al that would never work in a million years, two guys who like it their way???? Plus Davis will never give the control of the team to a HC, can you say micromanage.

  166. Pomai January 7, 2011 4:22 am

The other thing is that Davis is like the little kid who’s ball it is. Do it my way or I will take my ball and go home. He’s done that enough already.

Center around something that you know works for you. For example, if you wish to center your wardrobe on certain casual tops, then you can start from those pieces and work your way down. If you are more into plain, colored v-neck t-shirts, then you can be much more creative with your bottoms, your shoes, and your accessories. The more plain your tops are, the more colorful and varied the rest of your outfit can be.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

Hi, possibly i’m being a little off topic here, but I was browsing your site and it looks stimulating. I’m writing a blog and trying to make it look neat, but everytime I touch it I mess something up. Did you design the blog yourself? Could someone with little experience do it, and add updates without messing it up? Anyways, good information on here, very informative.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

  269. coach jewelry January 17, 2011 3:23 am

If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

I watch the news daily, sometimes all day if I can. It does affect my mood too, now that you mention it. I would probably be much happier ignoring the fact that our President has just about started world war three with his ignorance. I don’t know what’s better. Getting invaded and not knowing about it until me and my family is shot and killed in front of my eyes, or having the opportunity to head for the hills and hide because I knew they were coming.

Zune and iPod: Most folks compare the Zune to your Touch, but right after seeing how slim and surpr isingly small and gentle it is, I look at it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of the two the Touch along with the Nano. It really is quite colorful and lovely OLED display is slightly smaller than the touch display, but the player itself feels really a little smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as considerably, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

The brand new Zune browser is surpr isingly very good, but not as good because the iPod is. It performs very well, but is notas quickly as Safari, and includes a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on making use of the web browser that is not an situation, but when you??? re planning to browse the internet alot from your PMP then the iPod is much larger display and far better browser may be essential.

Why? Simply because I was satisfied to d iscover how well-designed and entertaining to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

Its as should you had a good grasp on the subject matter matter, but you forgot to include your readers. Perhaps you should think about this from more than one angle. Or perhaps you shouldnt generalise so much. Its far better if you take into consideration what others may have to say rather than just going for the gut reaction for the theme. Consider adjusting your own thought procedure and giving other people who may study this the benefit of the doubt.
