The Show

100_1420Davone Bess, Ryan Mouton

Special thanks to Ryan Mouton and Davone Bess for serving as guests on today’s Warrior Beat Show. Also big thanks to Colt Brennan for making a guest appearance. OK, Esme, that’s six times you’ve missed meeting Colton.

When spring practice ended a couple of months ago, Brashton Satele weighed 264 pounds, and the UH coaches plotted his move from middle linebacker to defensive end.
But Satele then went to train with conditioning coach Chad Ikei in Arizona. After a brashmonth of intense workouts and a strict diet, Satele lost more than 20 pounds while improving his speed and strength.
Yesterday, he weighed 239.
Here’s how he did it:
A new approach.
“I went to Arizona, and Chad changed my whole mental thought about working out, eating. I feel great. I feel the best I’ve ever felt in my life.”
In the beginning …
“The first day I got up there, I was like: ‘What did I get myself into?’ After a week, it got better.”
Thoughts for food.
“The best thing I did was to get off the island, to get away from Hawai‘i food, the white rice. Chad got me on a good diet. I got rid of the sugars, and cut down on carbs. I substitute brown rice for white rice. I eat chicken, steak, salmon. I bake the chicken. Nothing fried. I started to like it once I saw the changes to my body. I got addicted to it.”
And there it went.
“The first week, I lost 10 pounds. I started to plateau. Chad started to switch up the phases (of workouts). He gave a new phase, and I dropped another 10. Today, I weigh 239. I lost 25 pounds but I gained strength.”
Strength in numbers.
“Even when I’m lifting, it’s all super sets. It’s good. A couple of them are seven exercises in one set.”
Workout buddies.
“There were NFL guys there, like Aaron Francisco, Louis Holmes from Tampa Bay, Wendell Bryant from Arizona.”
The heat is on.
“It was hot. It was like a blow dryer in your face the whole time. Sometimes we ran indoors. But we ran outdoors, too. It averaged 110. Chad would make us run during the hottest time of the day, between noon and 2 o’clock. It was the best investment I ever made.”

    mornin

  2. ai-eee-soos July 14, 2009 12:33 am

So does Satele move back to MLB ?

  3. ai-eee-soos July 14, 2009 12:35 am

    Blaze looking FIT !!!

  4. ai-eee-soos July 14, 2009 12:36 am

    Anymore commits ?

  5. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2009 12:36 am

I’m thinking that at 239, he’s looking more like a middle linebacker.

  6. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2009 12:37 am

Word on the street is Mana Lolotai is looking beastly, too.

  7. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2009 12:37 am

There won’t be any solid commits for at least another week.

  8. ai-eee-soos July 14, 2009 12:37 am

I really liked that Sean Shigematsu committed – great prospect.

  9. al July 14, 2009 12:38 am

so is braston making a statement with his weight loss?
does he want to reclaim his middle linebacker slot?

he seems too light for de now.

he would be a great guest in the future.

  10. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2009 12:39 am

The agility drill is kind of cool. They start off in a prone position, then they jump up, and go through the obstacle of pads.

  11. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2009 12:39 am

    He’s making a statement.

  12. al July 14, 2009 12:40 am

oops…that’s not the first time you answered my question just moments before asking.

  13. al July 14, 2009 12:41 am

did liko go up with his brother?

  14. al July 14, 2009 12:42 am

    blaze looks “tick”.
maybe he could audition for de?

  15. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2009 12:45 am

    Blaze is under 240, too.

  16. al July 14, 2009 12:45 am

    aren’t we thin at de?

brashton, if he could stay injury free, could make quite a statement. if i recall he ran a 4.6/4.7 40 coming out of hs.

the competition at mlb just got better. its supposed to be like that.

and then there’s gdl who will either remind us of solly or make us forget about solly in the years to come.

  17. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2009 12:45 am

    Liko didn’t go to Arizona.
But Brashton is sharing Chad Ikei’s tips here.

  18. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2009 12:46 am

I saw Chizzy returning punts yesterday. He looks pretty fast.

  19. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2009 12:48 am

I think the defense will be fine. You’ve got to see Aaron Brown. He’s built like a linebacker, but he’s very fast.

  20. al July 14, 2009 12:48 am

perhaps they could rotate blaze and brash at outside lb. our version of “the bash brothers.”

they could wreak havoc from the left side, “strong side”. that would work keeping two of a kind coming each play and it could ease the injury bug that they both go through.

  21. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2009 12:50 am

Funny you used that term, Al.
Blaze called Brashton and Liko the Bash Brothers.

  22. al July 14, 2009 12:51 am

okay…i guess i should stroll over to catch a few practices.

what are they gonna do with lametrius davis? he is such a specimen he has got to start somewhere.

oh yah, chizzy will make you dizzy. and the little dude can out squat most linemen.

  23. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2009 12:53 am

Davis is still a tweener. They really like the idea of a big corner.

  24. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2009 12:54 am

The linemen do most of their workouts in the morning.
There’s a group that should be out there at 3 today.

  25. al July 14, 2009 12:55 am

it just seemed natural that they be the bash brothers aka mighty ducks.

good to see alex green’s name on the roster.

    so, where’s kainoa’s name?
manu and maleapeai are greyshirts huh?

did powel pass the sat? or is he going to west oahu as rumored?

  26. al July 14, 2009 12:56 am

we actually have a bevy of talent in the defensive backfield don’t we?

  27. ai-eee-soos July 14, 2009 12:57 am

ST – yesterday you mentioned a punter.

Was he Alex Donnachie (sp) ?

Was that punter booming them high, with a long hang time ?

  28. al July 14, 2009 12:57 am

    wait….. 3 am?

  29. al July 14, 2009 12:59 am

    happy birthday allie!

    (nice name btw)
wasn’t that the name of the leading lady in “the notebook”?

  30. al July 14, 2009 1:02 am

speaking of mouton…..you just got to love that kid. he is always smiling and up beat. and he professes his love for the islands just like colt all the time.

i think he will be a long time great in the nfl. we really didn’t get to see the real deal during his two years here due to injuries and position juggling.

  31. al July 14, 2009 1:04 am

is it my imagination or are the guys really putting in the work this year?

i am thinking that we will be the surprise of wac this year.
i am thinking that many of the recruits will contribute very much.
i am thinking that guys like ray hisatake will have breakout years.

  32. Ralph July 14, 2009 1:20 am

Happy Birthday Allie….Tsai is a Mets fan, but the only Allie I remember is Allie Reynolds, Yankees…Wena must have picked the name.

  33. Ralph July 14, 2009 1:26 am

Okay, the word is out, no swap meet on game day… good work JD, your legacy continues… 🙂 just win

  34. ai-eee-soos July 14, 2009 1:28 am

    Good Luck to Jake Ingram.

  35. al July 14, 2009 1:30 am

    allie reynolds…..!
    i wasn’t even born.

  36. al July 14, 2009 1:30 am

is it allie short for allison?

  37. Ralph July 14, 2009 1:38 am

    Allie Reynolds…..Cherokee Native from Oklahoma..

  38. paperchampion July 14, 2009 2:04 am

Nice that Brashton dropped so much.

I am concerned though, why did Brashton have to go all the way to Arizona to learn about eating healthy?

Cutting out sugar, no white rice, no salt, salmon, steak, eggs, fish, turkey, chicken for protein……………………….that is basic bodybuilding nutrition.

Shouldn’t Hawaii’s strength coaches be mapping out a nutrition plan for the team, especially for the O-lineman???

    Just shocking.

  39. Stretch July 14, 2009 4:13 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

    Happy Birthday to Aunty Allie!!

    Everyone have a good day

  40. Garret July 14, 2009 4:21 am

    Happy Birthday Allie Tsai!

  41. Garret July 14, 2009 4:23 am

It is great that Brashton lost the 25 pounds and got into such great condition this offseason. I hope that he can maintain that regimen away from Arizona, as UH will have two great options at MLB now. That will be a position to watch in camp, as both candidates will be worthy of a starting role and will be hungry for the job.

  42. Garret July 14, 2009 4:25 am

I’m happy that the swap meet will not operate during game days…tailgating can return and hopefully that will improve attendance at games.

  43. Garret July 14, 2009 4:27 am

Some interesting stats from this study of college football over the previous 5 seasons.

To be a little more descriptive the table below is a breakdown of every* 1a school’s record over the last 5 (2004-2008) seasons. I wasn’t able to find a summary of the data like this anywhere so I created it myself.

Boise State is head and shoulders above the WAC, but their 55-9 (38-2) record looks weak when you see they are only 4-5 against the AP Top 25. The same can be said for WVU’s 50-13 (26-8) and 5-7 and Wisconsin’s 47-17 (26-14) and 5-12 records.

Tulsa, Navy and Hawaii all have won more games than Florida State.

  44. roysan16 July 14, 2009 4:35 am

Excuse me for asking, but direct me to the link that the swap meet has vacated on game days.

  45. roysan16 July 14, 2009 4:48 am

    As of this writing

Of course this paper: Swap meet *may* vacate stadium for University of Hawaii games

The other papers news section says it’s a forgone conclusion. The stadium authority voted in favor of removing the swap meet on game days.

  46. Mo808 July 14, 2009 5:00 am

Good morning Tsaikos! Liz I’m here! Happy Birthday Allie Tsai! Great news about Brashton! Looks like the defense will be exciting–conditioning and nutrition really makes a difference in performance!

  47. Mo808 July 14, 2009 5:04 am

If the swap meet is REALLY gone on game days, it will make for a better FB experience for fans!

    paperchampion,

    Good point.
Sometimes the Daddy-Uncle Syndrome can explain stuff like that.
No matter how much sense “Daddy” makes, it’s not until “Uncle” says the same thing that “Jr.” listens!
Another thing is that Brashton said, “It was the best investment I ever made.” Perhaps with his own cash invested, things seemed more pertinent?

  57. d1島 July 14, 2009 6:03 am

….whatever the reason, it’s great to see Brashton in such great shape!

    Good morning Tsai-kos!!

    Happy bday to Allie Tsai.

Looks like the lb corps will rival last year’s unit. Can’t wait to see them bash the opposing backfield to the ground. 😀

    Long day at work today…

  62. Pauoa Boy July 14, 2009 6:42 am

    Question for Davone Bess…

It’s obvious you proved that you should have been drafted, you are no doubt the best receiver on the Dolphins. Who would you rather catch passes from, Colt Brennan or Chad Pennington? What do you think of the possibility of you and Colt making it to the Pro Bowl and playing in Hawaii again or better yet the same team in the NFL? You are going to be on my Fantasy Football team by the way, good luck this year!

    Question for Ryan Mouton…

Has Coach Fisher mentioned anything about you returning kicks this year and what kind of impact do you think you can make on special teams? Also, with you added to the secondary the Titans defense will definitely be on my Fantasy Football team!

Question for both Davone and Ryan…

Do you play fantasy football at all and if so who would be your first pick and why?

  63. Da Punchbowl Kid July 14, 2009 7:17 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

Great news about Brashton. I agree with posters above who say it looks like we’re seeing some real of season commitment this summer. Can’t wait for the season.

No questions for Ryan or Davone, just want to wish them all the best and congrats on doing so well thus far.

  64. Da Punchbowl Kid July 14, 2009 7:18 am

    Happy Birthday, Ms Allie!

  65. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2009 7:33 am

    You’ve seen my midsection.
    I’ve been soft for years.

  66. warriorfanny2 July 14, 2009 7:37 am

Good for Brash, but it has to make one wonder about UH trainers teaching diet. In the programs I have monitored nationally, diet plays an important role, esp with OLM. Trainers do not want weight gains that add fat rather than muscle mass. There is monitoring and body content testing.
It all goes together to have a well conditioned and healthy body.

  67. warriorfanny2 July 14, 2009 7:43 am

ST, u must contradistinquish betw OLM and DLM.
We are keenly interested in the OLM and their work outs, in particular, sprints, agility, run conditioning, aerobic exercises, on a weekly basis.

  68. Richie July 14, 2009 7:43 am

It’s great that Brashton made the commitment to get in top shape. Most college athletes would not be able to attend a conditioning program in Arizona with Chad Ikei so it is good that he had the opportunity and made the best of it. I am wondering, however, if the coaches will want him to add more weight now that they’ve moved him to DE as 239 lbs. is pretty light for that position.

  69. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2009 7:48 am

    wf2:
You’re welcome to go to the morning workouts and document them. I still have a camera for you. You might even get their early enough to join Myki and sjmacro.

  70. A-House July 14, 2009 7:51 am

A most happy birfday to Ms Allie from your neighbors!!!

  71. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2009 7:54 am

By the way, for clarification, a “trainer” at UH is athletic trainer, as in medical staff.
There are strength and conditioning coaches.
But, no, UH does not have a nutritionist, if that’s what some might believe.
Chad Ikei is an overall trainer whose specialties include serving as a nutritionist. Because he works with a small group, he can have tailor-made programs for his clients.
UH does offer overall guidelines — avoid sweets, cut down on carbs — but not a personalized diet for the more than 500 athletes.

  72. warriorfanny2 July 14, 2009 7:55 am

Turnberry weather forecast calls for rain, wind along the N Ayrshire coast as it appears a nasty front is moving in across the Irish Sea.
Thursday: Foggy with light rain developing later in the day. High 64F. Winds WSW at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 60%.
Friday: Light rain and fog. Highs in the mid 60s and lows in the low 50s.
Saturday: Rain. Highs in the low 60s and lows in the low 50s.

“You cant fake it on this course”, said Tiger Woods.
If the wind is blowing and you get the cross-winds it will be a challenge to put the ball in play”, he added.
Woods has gotten in 3 rounds of practice with his caddie Steve Williams as he prepares for the open on Thursday.
Tiger will be Teeing-off at 10:09 pm (HST) on WED.

  73. warriorfanny2 July 14, 2009 8:03 am

Gee, get rid of dead weight, like mcNamara and hire a good trainer–that would benefit our athletes and put them on equal footin w the rest of the NCAA D1A world. Seems tragic to discover in your 5th year after travelling to another continental venue, that u have been eating wrong at UH for for 4 years….so much for manuals. lol.

  74. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2009 8:10 am

    wf2:
You’re right. UH could use one.
But when you’re not selling out sporting events and state funding is decreasing …

  75. Slugger July 14, 2009 8:10 am

    Hey, Allie, Happy Birthday!

    Good day to da Tsaikos!

  76. jm2375 July 14, 2009 8:12 am

re nutritionists – might be a good “rotation” for the FSHN students.

  77. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2009 8:15 am

Another mis-description at UH, I think, is the term marketing. I think we all assume marketing means promotions. But marketing has become more of the money-raising branch, such as corporate sponsorships, etc. In that regard, McNamara does a very good job.
But UH doesn’t have a lot of toys to play with. To promote games, it’s pretty much left with offering various discounts — two-for-ones, bring-a-date, military, etc. UH probably needs a full-on promoter. Hire Tom Moffatt?

  78. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2009 8:16 am

Or maybe UH needs to hire Kekoa, SteveM, BG or Al as a promoter.

  79. letsgowarriors July 14, 2009 8:25 am

stephen, can u confirm the whereabouts of tj alofipo?

  80. warriorfanny2 July 14, 2009 8:26 am

ST, sorry, that’s an excuse….the economy wasnt always bad—fact is UH has never put into place a bonfide training program. The facts support that contention.
Colt wasnt eating well last year and lost weight. raphael Ieru admitted to not training and gaining weight. the list goes on. last year our OL was not in shape during camp and their results speak volumes. having something on paper, like a manual is one thing, but means nothing unless enforced and monitored.
You dont have to have plasma TVs in your lockerrooms to have a qualified trainer.
So far we have seen athletes scaling 12-foot fences to practice on their own, others leaving Hawaii to receive better training tips on the mainland and the ones that stay, prolly gain weight. At Michigan, the ones that left after Rodriques arrived, departed becz the training was too rigorous. We seem to have a reversal here, athletes going away so they can get better training….sad.

  81. warriorfanny2 July 14, 2009 8:52 am

With only 15 clubs allowed in the bag, most players in the British Open at the Ailsa course in Turnberry will be only carrying a wood or two, most likely a driver.
The strategy is to hit the ball low, below the wind streams and hope to stay inside Ailsa links narrow and undulating fairways.
Last week a golf tournament was played here and 442 balls were lost.

No wonder Tiger has been using alot of his irons off the TEE in his three practice rounds.
“this tournament is going to be won on the TEE”, said #3 world-ranked Paul Casey.
“If you can keep it in the fairways you have a shot at the green”, he said.

  82. J-Dog July 14, 2009 9:02 am

    re: #18

so I wonder who’s the candidates to return punts this season? Chizzy? Jovonte Taylor? I think I heard Dustin Blount’s name mentioned.

It was a weak spot for UH and I thought our punt returns would be good last season with mike washington back there, but that was not the case.

  83. J-Dog July 14, 2009 9:14 am

    wf2,

the club count limit is 14 not 15.

  84. Stretch July 14, 2009 9:17 am

wf2 – everything takes money and RIGHT NOW money is non-existant. true, maybe in the PAST, they should have hired a nutritionist with the economy better but we all know how HF handled UHAD. Until Athletics makes more money to cover the basic needs of the atheletes, having full time nutritionist is not a top priority although it would be beneficial.

And please don’t tell me unless a coach, trainer, or nutrionist tells the players, that they don’t know burgers/fries, plate lunches, pizza, etc are NOT helping them prepare for the season. Training during the off season shows the players committment to the program.

Could you both devise a special hand signal for the Tsaiko’s after every TD? [Something like a *T* Shaka].

We have been your biggest fans since you were knee high to Stephen Tsai. Congratulations on making it to the NFL.

    Question for Davone and Ryan:

did you purchase anything special with your first NFL paycheck?

  98. GOuh July 14, 2009 10:20 am

I commend Brashton and Mana for taking the initiative to better themselves as athletes.

But what a bummer, that our local boys can’t get the same conditioning and nutrition advice at home. Hawaii obviously does not have the knowledge to keep the boys home, and in shape. Maybe the strength coach and other coaches should see how much progress has been made. They need to either FIRE the strength coach because our boys are big, but sloppy. Not in top shape. All of them want to play, and be strong, and healthy, but can’t with mediocre workouts.

This is a statement to coach Mack.

I think most of the players do know about proper nutrition, but there must be more of an incentive to stick to a strict diet when you’re paying someone to hold your nose to the grindstone. Some say that loco mocos are more addictive than nicotine.

It’s not just football players – or, for that matter, all athletes – who need to look at what they eat and how often. But then I’m not the one qualified to preach on this subject since my Four Basic Food Groups are sugar, caffeine, chocolate, and butter.

However, I think that it might be a good project for UH Athletic Supporters to consider raising the funds to retain the services of a nutritionist as a full-time consultant.

Realistically, that would cost between $75,000 & $85,000 a year. That is quite doable by creating a fund drive through Koa Anuenue.

Why not put on quarterly community HI-5 drives which could raise as much as $15,000 a year if properly advertised and supported. Bi-monthly ones would bring in about $23,000. Other special events and contribution drives could cover the rest.

Perhaps this issue could be raised with Jim Donovan and the coaches if there’s any interest amongst the fans to pitch in.

OFF-SPORTS TOPIC – Another upcoming community event

    Hawaii-Powered Clean Energy Festival

The Waterfront at Aloha Tower Marketplace (at base of the historic Aloha Tower)

This family friendly event will feature:

Exhibitors and vendors presenting innovative and future clean energy solutions

Drawings for over 100 clean energy related prizes including a two night stay at the Westin Moana Surfrider Resort and Spa, an Aloha e-bike electric bicycle, and a Sunetric home solar hot water system

Live music by Henry Kapono, Brother Noland, and more on a stage powered by bio-diesel

Free CFLs for incandescent light bulbs exchange program

Bio-fuel powered bouncers for the kids plus a video corner featuring Climate Cartoons, opportunities for Scouts to earn Energy Merit Badges, and a photo op with Curious George

    Local eco-friendly food vendors

    and

A program featuring a recap of the progress that Hawai`i has made towards becoming energy-independent

Exhibitors will be showcasing clean energy products and technologies including a ‘how to make your own bio-diesel’ demonstration, a solar cooking demonstration and a display of the new Tesla Roadster, a fully electric sports car that can go from 0-60 in 3.9 seconds and travel 240 miles on a single charge.

Applications will be available for “Hawaii Homes-Unplugged” – a locally- produced reality television show. The show will feature two families whose homes will be given” energy makeovers” to make them more energy efficient and reduce their carbon footprints. Anyone can be a candidate!

you can lead a horse to water, but, you can’t force em to drink.

while many are bitching and moaning about nutrition, nutritionist, etc. all of which don’t mean a darn thing. even if you had these resources, the bottom line is, if the particpants don’t participate 100% it ain’t gonna happen.

brashton is a prime example, and hopefully will be the guy to say, “look at me….you can do it,too.” he is the example, the “prove it”.

  125. al July 14, 2009 11:26 am

    ryan mouton………..

coming from katy, texas to honolulu, hawaii must have been quite challenging at first. the adjustment to the culture, community, language (pidgin), food, and all. was there a point in time that you may have questioned your decision to be a warrior?

  126. Pete July 14, 2009 11:28 am

Good to hear that Brashton took the off-season seriously. I gotta think that it went cost him some $$. I mean airfare, housing, food plus whatever Ikei’s training for one month must be several grand. Who get that kind of money? Not all the UH guys can afford. I guess getting the individual help rather than being at UH with everybody else helps. Yeah, maybe we need a nutritionist. I don’t know about the strength coaches, if they good or bad, but maybe we do need to look at them too.

when you verballed to hawaii, i was in shock. to think that a 4 star cornerback w/reported 4.28 speed would pick hawaii. i know you had a bunch of bumps and bruises while here. i know that as a total team player you were asked to fill in the gaps to make our defense work, safety, nickelback, slotback, and the like. in fact you rarely got to play your natural position, cornerback.

i believe that you will have a long and illustrious career in the nfl as a cornerback.

    Re-Training

I think in the last couple of years there’s a better attitude towards training. I heard a few of the coaches and players in interviews mention that the players are dedicating themselves to training harder. I’ve read detailed reports here that the players are training harder. I’ve gone to a few practices in the spring and I sizing up this coming years O-Linemen I thought if someone measured collectively the O-Linemen’s body fat index it’s probably the best in years. I remember (truthfully) the appearances of some of Coach Cavs O-Linemen carrying huge bags of rice under their jerseys. The current O-Linemen I don’t see this as much.

I felt in games last year that the stamina of the O-Linemen could have been better. As often times I watched, they do well at times and then they seem to tire.

I would ask Estes if he thinks if he sees 2007 team’s O-Line that went to the Sugar Bowl as being in better shape, condition and having greater stamina than the O-Line in the past couple of years, I’d bet he’d probably say no.

I think the O-Linemen were traumatized and demoralized by being outplayed last year that it could accentuate that they were not on condition. I think this could add to the illusion that they were out of shape, too.

Since Coach Mack has come aboard all I hear is that the players are training. And seemingly every day since the end of the season. From the super games up to the spring and now the summer all I read are references here that are posted that the players are working out.

Finally, I think taking one isolated case, like Satele working out in Arizona and extrapolating from this that the conditioning regiment at UH is lagging is unfair.

  146. Stretch July 14, 2009 12:05 pm

The show is at UH again… Is this going to be permanent?? I like better than at HA bldg. The whole set up is nicer.

  147. al July 14, 2009 12:10 pm

while we are waiting…they should play that tune that jeopardy uses during the final question.

  148. al July 14, 2009 12:11 pm

    i have a question for bg…..

do you have this burning desire to do the ha’a?
perhaps you can lead a group during the tailgates just before we hit the stadium.

    mwahahahaha.

  149. haka July 14, 2009 12:12 pm

In my mind, the bottom line is that in this day and age of communication and the process of information sharing, no one, especially aspiring athletes, should have to be told what is good and what is not good for improving and reaching their athletic potential. If an athlete wants to do it…just do it! If an athlete doesn’t want to do it…don’t do it! It all comes from within.

You can lead an athlete to the water cooler, but you can’t make an athlete drink. Brashton decided he couldn’t do it without help and a temporary relocation so he made a concientious decision to do it. Having a personal trainer and forced meal selection is great. Now that he has a taste of dedication inspired success, he will easily transition that to a positive lifestyle change.

The big question in my mind is, why do so many athletes wait until their senior year to make a strong commitment to excellence in preparation for their last season? The truly great athletes have the desire from day one and that is what separates the great athletes from the rest of the field.

Success is derived from a burning desire within. You either want it or you don’t. For all incoming freshmen athletes, I say don’t wait until the end of your eligibility to see the light. That is potential lost. Want it! Want it now! Just do it!

    Go Warriors!

  150. BG July 14, 2009 12:15 pm

    al

no, i don’t have a burning desire to do the ha’a. I’d rather watch the players do it. But, as a fan, I am looking for ways to let the players know that the fans are behind them. my problem is having the creativity in thinking up new and easy ways to do things

  151. al July 14, 2009 12:20 pm

    #143

I apologize if I’m irritating you…please feel free to skip over my posts. But, since you have been reading them, do you recall if I’ve ever asked anyone to make the activity happen? No, you haven’t. My purpose in bringing it up is to remind someone of their commitment which was made and not acted on so far. In the interim, I’m going directly to the people who should have the thumbs up or thumbs down…the players. If they like it, then it’s time to ask permission from the coaches, and so on. Does that sound like a plan to you? thanks

Warriorfanny, don’t we already have strength & conditioning coaches already, how much does it take for these guys to take some nutrition courses? If they are not incorporating nutrition into the training regimes, its a good time to start.

Not rocket science to figure out what you put into your body affects what happens to it. I only eat brown rice, whole grain breads. Who does not know that two scoops white rice with gravy, mac salad and a large coke goes straight to your gut and increases body fat!?!?!

I don’t play competitively anymore cause of injuries & age. But always took care of myself and knew what was good for your body & what wasn’t. It takes will power, dedication & common sense to stay away from places like Rainbow’s and L & L.

Thank you for another fine show. Both Devone and Ryan are so laid back and down to earth. And this is refreshing. In this day and age you see many Pros with harden exteriors, it’s good to see Devone and Ryan how their expressions are conveying warmth. And kindness… See no big egos here.

When I remember Coach Jones alluding to to recruiting team
players. And players that fit in within the system Devone and Ryan epitomize this. You can size people up further on how they interview, and watching the show I can see immediately that both players exude auras that make them the types that would get along with all others on the team.

During the show there’s playful jawing between the two former Warriors. Yet tempered with exchanges of smiles between the two. Very good chemistry between the two.

The question by al (very good question) about if they’ll ever return to school brought a serious response where both mentioned about returning to UH next spring in taking classes. Devone mentioned he’s 20 credits away. And both conceded that a college degree is something to fall back on.

When asked about financial advisers you can sense that both are level headed in this area, too. You can sense that there both will keep a watchful eye on how they spend their money.

A very entertaining show. A lot of laughter and fun between Stephen, Leila, Ryan and Devone. The only concern I have is I hope Devone gets his cough checked.

all too often we forget that these guys/gals go to a college on scholarship for the purpose of getting a college degree first and then athletics second.

I just sent this email to those people who wanted UH vs UNLV tickets, but haven’t sent in payment. If you didn’t get the email, and you wanted tickets (either from SteveM’s site, or sending me an email), please let me know. There aren’t many extras and I’ve got a small waiting list.
    ******************************************************************
    Hey Everyone –

Don’t know if you’ve been reading the blog lately, but I set July 20 as the deadline for UH vs UNLV tix. Listed below are either your blog name or real name along with the tickets requested. I’ve included a couple of folks from the waiting list. Please let me know if you still intend on going to the game and if the ticket count is correct. I got the number of tickets from the form filled out on SteveM’s website, or from emails you sent me. Hope they’re right…

Payment can be mailed to me: (Check payble to Rich Darvey)

    Rich Darvey
    c/o R.C. Baral & Company, Inc.
    16255 Ventura Blvd. Ste. 201

Tickets are $25 each. Almost everyone has contributed something extra for my travel expenses to Vegas to offer these tickets at face value with NO $5 or $10 handling fee. If you want the tickets sent certified mail, include an additional $5.10 and let me know the $5.10 is for certified, and not my expenses.

DO NOT FORGET TO SEND A LEGAL SIZED SELF ADDRESSED STAMPED ENVELOPE WITH YOUR PAYMENT.

    Leila & ST –

Great show today with 3 NFL players from the 2007 dream season. These guys are so low key and have no egos. But, true Warriors for life. I’ll bet there aren’t many other schools that have former players in the NFL come hang around during the off-season.

Great to hear how Brashton Satele is taking the initiative necessary to improve his senior year as well as having a positive effect on the team as a whole.

It has seemed like most players are taking their off season training seriously and rightfully so.

Heck I remember Blaze Soares being interviewed by L&L prior to the 2008 season saying, and I quote, “with Coach Jones practices were kinda ‘cruz’ (cruise), but with Coach Mack I think we’re going to work harder”….

The show is at UH again… Is this going to be permanent?? I like better than at HA bldg. The whole set up is nicer

I agree. There seem to be a greater intimacy at HA bldg. I like it when the co-host and guests are huddled close together. Maybe this is by accident where they are in a confined space. But this does conveys warmth. And the guests are comfortable and relaxed. Other sport’s shows it seems like guests are being interrogated. And you can feel the chill in the air (mostly her). Not so with the WB show for it seems like everyone–the co-hosts and guests are so engaging. However I do miss the bottleneck dolls, soccer balls, footbal, and football helmets on the table.

    Hi Liz,

Barbara and I reached the beach at Waikiki near the Kapahulu Groin at 6am, and saw… Colt with a couple of buddies parking across the street. They were going surfing with stand-up paddleboards. I hollered across the street to Colt, hey! sorry…small waves.

Then Barbara and I went for a mile walk down to find the shower tree that the Emperor of Japan planted in 1959, near the Diamond Head end of Kapiolani Park. We did not find any plaque or identifying marker, but we looked in the specific area mentioned in the Honolulu Advertiser so if it was one of them, we saw it.

We went snorkeling and swimming near the Groin, then as we passed a shower area at about 8am, guess who was there? Colt. We had a few words and I mentioned the Tsaikos, your name, and my blog name. He recognized your name, and said he enjoyed meeting with you.

Though it was his first experience with the stand-up paddleboard, he managed to catch a few waves too and he enjoyed himself.

Over the last 5 years UH is…

    43-23 overall
    28-12 in conference
10-18 in games with teams with winning records
0-11 in games with teams in the AP top 25
won 78% of it’s games at home
won 48% of it’s games on the road

    source-http://www.collegegameballs.com/2009/07/13/by-the-numbers-2004-2008/

My notes-Winnable games in the last 5 years

    2008 7-7
    San Jose lost by 3
    Cincinatti lost by 5

    2007 12-1

    2006 11-3
    Oregon State lost by 3
    @Alabama lost by 8
    @Boise lost by 7

    2005 5-7
    Boise lost by 3

    2004 8-5

(taking it in the chin with huge loses to Boise 69-3 and to Fresno 70-14 you have to like how the Warriors bounced back in their last 4 games with wins over Idaho, Northwestern, Michigan State and UAB).

    2001

    from UH site:
Are 2-0 against ranked teams in 2001 having defeated then No. 18 Fresno State (38-34) and No. 9 Brigham Young (72-45).

WF2 ~ Earlier today you suggested UH hire additional staff to monitor or administer certain programs.

Stretch gave good reason why it comes down to affordability.

Al suggested that it is basically the athlete’s Kuleana to take responsibility.

Since you insist that it can be done, why would you want Stretch to do the research? Stretch is already very involved with UH funding. He has put his money where his mouth is, and together with the Tsaiko’s have raised money for the UH foundation. Would you care to join us and raise money to institute these changes?

  208. warriorfanny2 July 14, 2009 6:59 pm

    Look, football schollies are revokable.
Follow the plan or hit the road.
Depends what standard the coach sets.
You want a ‘whatever’ athletic atmosphere–go to a smalltime program.
But if you go to a premium program that produces winners–better be ready to work….their salaries r on the line and if they are going to lose, it wont be becz they ran out of gas on the field or sustained injuries becz their athletes werent ready.
Champions arent made under shady trees.
They train hard, starting at the crack of dawn and run in the hot sun and work till early dusk.

….and roysan….dont make any presumptions about who is in shape at UH unless u take out a stop watch in Aug and do the clockin yourself….do u know what to clock or what times to look for in a set of sprints?
What is the average lapse time in our O betw a whistle to blow a play dead and the next snap of the ball?
Average number of plays to sustain a 65 yard drive to the goal?
    Average yards per play?
What is the width of the field?
How many O plays in a quarter?
    Half?
    game?

    Do research…..
Then prepare a training plan for that event.
Taking into account, the quarter and halftime breaks, lifting (what kind u say?), agilities, sprints, plyos, endurance running, skill techniques, 7’s, diet and rest.
After researching all of the above–tell me how u arrived at your conclusion that our OL is in shape for aug camp–THANX.

  209. warriorfanny2 July 14, 2009 7:18 pm

kekoa, stretch should be applauded and I see y u have respect 4 him….but personal fan involvement is not my point–that is an entirely different subject matter and a personal commitment for each fan to make–proper training planning, implementation and administration is my subject matter….take it for what its worth 2 u as a discussion matter…..some are always crticizing da donks but their head coach donated a substantial portion of his salary towards the football program to make it better….lets talk about that since everyone is talking about hardtimes!

    Re#145

If you find any reference that I said the OL are in shape I’ll pay for your bar tab with la coco, la moco and la yoko at the monkey bar? Fair?

The only thing I said was that there is a better attitude.

Players have been working out feverishly. ST reports continuously how he sees players working out. Estes during his chat confirmed that the O-Line has been working out. And I think he mentioned how they are running up and down the bleachers.

When I took the eye ball test and looked at the O-Line I said they looked trimmer and not as fat and overweight as in the past. This was in the spring.

In my post I thought last year the O-Line men looked liked their stamina could be a question mark.

So ,curiously, where does it say I think the O-Line men are in shape?

Bells, whistles, clip boards and data bases I have no use for. I do okay with my eyes.

    Going back to roysan16’s #224 and Jason’s #227:

If someone like Davone wanted to complete the 20-odd credits remaining for their undergraduate studies, could they theoretically chip away at it if they came back to UH during the Spring semester?

Sure it might take them 3 or 4 Springs if they don’t cram it all in at once, but there’s gotta be some sort of positive feeling of achievement for completing the requirements for a Bachelor’s degree.

That, and I guess their NFL schedules might need to be considered, especially if their team makes the postseason or, heaven forbid, they make the Super Bowl!

  239. LizKauai [iMac] Unite and Conquer! July 14, 2009 11:25 pm

CRW- hiya! hope things are going well for you!

I like the chipping concept- keeps the learning mode turned on and gives Davone (so far) a chance to spend more time with his family and Hawaii ohana!

  240. Committed Road Warrior July 14, 2009 11:51 pm

    Hi Liz!

Things are fine on my end, especially given the cards I’ve been dealt recently.

I figure an NFL’er “going back to school” and enrolling in the maximum courseload would be overkill, inasmuch as that you wouldn’t be learning much at all…..it would be more like memorizing the bare minimum to pass the next exam.

All in all, it would be great to see former UH athletes return to complete their undergraduate studies…..but this is somebody THEY have to want to do, not something they should be forced into doing. If they no like, that’s fine. But if they like, all the better for them!

It’s a great exchange for the HA being able to use the UH facilities for the Warrior Beat. One of the students who just graduated from NAU is doing an internship on the Today Show (see the link on my name.) She is a Filipina from AZ; her Mom’s from HI. i wish brashton goodluck this season but if you ask me i dont feel you need to train away to loose 20lb. and as far as diet you dont to spend big money to have someone tell you what is good and bad to eat. there are alot of nutritionest in hawaii. as far as his training they are good but its the same thing mel delaura teaches except now mr. satele is fliping tires so he could of done the training here but he chose to do it else where and thats awsome for him. and about the players being over weight i think its just them not wanting it bad enough. on the inside i asked a couple of guys if they were conditioning and there answer was ” we lazy today so we will jus do it later ok have a good one b4 coach comes” so dont think its the strength coach i feel some players dont want it bad enough but i hope they find that last kill in them to ball out instead of fighting to be the “HAKA” leader. if not no worries i no deep inside we got this. good luck guys train hard and focus while your sleeping others are up training to shatter your dreams.
