Beige area

While Greg Alexander and Brent Rausch have been impressive as expected, another newcomer quarterback, Steele Jantz, also has drawn raves from teammates.
Now, if the coaches believe Jantz is better than any quarterback in the 2009 class, he might earn a beigeshirt offer.
What’s that?
The way a beige shirt would work is Jantz, who is a freshman already enrolled in Summer Session I, would be on the active roster this fall, presumably as a redshirt. In January, he then would go on scholarship. A beigeshirt is different from a grayshirt, in which a freshman is not on the active roster during the fall semester.
UH used the beigeshirt approach in 2005 with Colt Brennan and Dan Kelly. They paid their way during the 2005 fall semester then went on scholarship in January 2006.
Jantz is athletic, with a rocket arm.
He slipped under the recruiting radar because of a knee injury suffered in the third game last season. If Jantz, who has been invited to training camp, continues to show promise, it might translate into a scholarship.

And here’s Steele Jantz (with white cap) consulting with Shane Austin (center) and Greg Alexander:

Still, let’s not forget Alexander, who has been throwing very well.

In this pic, Alexander receives some tips from quarterback Inoke Funaki, who has served as the unofficial coach of the unsupervised workouts.

That’s Alexander in the Sugar Bowl shirt. Running back Jake Heun is in the foreground:

Slotback Jon Medeiros made fun of my, uh, photographic abilities. So I told him I’d make it up to him with a close-up shot:

Here’s a pre-workout gathering. That’s Steele Jantz on the left. Running back Leon Wright-Jackson is on the far right.

  1. Stretch June 8, 2008 12:27 am

It looks like Hawaii should be in good hands and the QB position for the next few years w/ Raush being a sophmore and Jantz a freshmen. If he redshirts, he will have still be a freshment the following season. He has pretty good size so should be able to handle the physical part.

  2. Stretch June 8, 2008 12:49 am

    I think Jantz is 6-3 205

  3. Stretch June 8, 2008 12:50 am

ST – when you are out there taking pics of the workouts, is the “other paper” out there or is the photographer too busy reading the paper??

  4. Stephen Tsai June 8, 2008 12:54 am

    Jantz is 208 pounds.
I think Midori7 would approve of his forearms.

  5. Stephen Tsai June 8, 2008 12:55 am

    Stretch:
Don’t you have to be somewhere at 9 a.m.?

  6. J June 8, 2008 12:59 am

I have to be somewhere at 9 a.m.

  7. Stretch June 8, 2008 1:02 am

Yup, on the way to golf, I have a secret meeting that nobody should know about. I guess I should be sleeping soon but that afternoon nap was toooo long.

  8. Stephen Tsai June 8, 2008 1:04 am

    I can’t sleep yet.
UH is beating New Mexico State on K5.

  9. Pomai June 8, 2008 1:04 am

ST what would you say is the number of guys that show up for these workouts?

  10. Stephen Tsai June 8, 2008 1:07 am

Hey, I saw a shot of Guyton Galdeira.
    He’ll be missed.

  11. koakane™ June 8, 2008 1:08 am

a shout out to SteveM wishing him a speedy recovery.

  12. Stephen Tsai June 8, 2008 1:09 am

    Pomai:
It varies because they have workouts throughout the day.
The defense showed up at midweek. I’d say there were about 40 or so skilled guys out there last week. That’s not bad, considering school schedules and some Mainland guys going home. It also doesn’t include the linemen.

  13. Pomai June 8, 2008 1:12 am

What kind of Program does Mel DeLaura have going on now?

  14. Pomai June 8, 2008 1:14 am

From the pictures it looks like a lot of the guys have been hitting the weight room pretty good!

  15. Stretch June 8, 2008 1:14 am

I can see koakane typing with one eye closed and with one finger concentrating to hit only one key at a time.

  16. Stephen Tsai June 8, 2008 1:15 am

    Pomai:
Send me your e-mail address and I’ll send you the workout agenda.

  17. Pomai June 8, 2008 1:19 am

If one would judge on just the physical attributes alone it looks like Jake Heun will be a monster in the backfield.

  18. Stephen Tsai June 8, 2008 1:20 am

    Heun is a tough guy.

  21. Pomai June 8, 2008 1:25 am

In watching the entire 06 season then the 07 season, I think the one outstanding difference I noticed was Nate, even though we went 12-0 if Nate had been playing there would have been less question of how good we really where. So IMHO the big time back will make a big difference this year.

  22. Stephen Tsai June 8, 2008 1:36 am

    Lorgan Pau.
That’s another UH guy who won’t be back.

  23. Stretch June 8, 2008 1:40 am

    lorgan is pau??

  24. 99club June 8, 2008 1:47 am

    SteveM-
    Here’s to a speedy recovery!

Don’t know if anyone posted yet…Phil Steele’s College Football Annual has Hawaii at #47 following #31 Boise St. and #41 Fresno St. He has Florida ranked #1 and playing in the title game against Ohio St. I guess that means he thinks Ohio St. will beat USC on 12 Sep. Just for fun, LSU opens with Appalachia St. I’ll bet the LSU coach’s pregame speech will consist of nothing more than playing the highlight tape of ASU’s Michigan upset.

  25. Pomai June 8, 2008 1:47 am

    Was he a walkon?

  26. al June 8, 2008 1:54 am

    geez don’t you guys sleep?

heun looks like he’ll relish running over some little cornerbacks, safeties, lb’s, etc. his arms are bigger than his head.

and lwj looks like put on some pounds and inches.

is it me or does the call for open positions done good for the preseason conditioning program????

  32. Mike Wedge June 8, 2008 2:35 am

hoo man.. I am excited! lol Jantz the next Brennan? Hmm, I am thinking to open the season, we should have some sort of quarterback practice in Florida. xD First one to toss 5 TD’s gets free dinner at Zippy’s when they get back. I’d love to see Jantz get that dinner… cause then I’ll be dining in either Pasadena, Glendale, New Orleans or Miami around New Years. 😛

  33. Garret June 8, 2008 4:57 am

Get well soon SteveM! Does anyone know how we can send messages to the Hospital that could be printed out for him like what the Hospital did for Bulla?

I agree with ST that SteveM is an essential part of the blog. He’s also a very good person who does so much for others without asking for anything for himself in return.

  34. Garret June 8, 2008 5:01 am

I never new that the term was called beigeshirt. It is great that Jantz has been doing so well. With all of the focus on the incoming JC players, it would be amazing if Jantz was ahead of them in the depth chart when Fall camp ends.

  35. Garret June 8, 2008 5:04 am

Mahalo to Inoke for coaching the other QBs and leading the workouts. That is a great benefit to the team even though it may not be in Inoke’s best interest…I’m glad that he thinks of the team first and not just of himself.

  36. Garret June 8, 2008 5:12 am

This is horrible news for Chad Owens, especially coming right after the huge game he had on National TV last week that might have opened some doors for him!

Crush receiver/kick returner Chad Owens, a former University of Hawaii receiver, suffered a torn ACL in his left knee at the end of the third quarter of Saturday’s game on a kickoff return and is out for the year, according to the Crush training staff.

Michigan State fans might remember Owens. In the Spartans’ last regular season game 2004, Owens helped lead the Rainbow Warriors back from a 28-14 halftime deficit to defeat Michigan State 41-38 by catching 13 passes for 287 yards and four scores in that Dec. 4 game.

  37. MeiLing June 8, 2008 5:13 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

Well wishes to SteveM! Hope it’s not serious.

  38. Garret June 8, 2008 5:15 am

At least Chad got another TD right before his injury. I think that fumbling after tearing an ACL is understandable.

Each team traded punches in the third quarter, as Colorado cashed in on scores by Dutton, Nelson and Chad Owens and the Rampage took advantage of a pair of touchdowns by Higgins and a sure-handed grab by Magner.

Grand Rapids collected the first turnover of the half in unfortunate circumstances, when Owens, Colorado’s kickoff return man, suffered a leg injury causing him to fumble the ball into the arms of Johnson. Brian Gowins’ (Birmingham, Ala.) 38-yard field goal gave the Rampage their largest lead of the night, 67-43, at the end of the third quarter.

  39. Garret June 8, 2008 5:17 am

It is pretty cool that Chad Kapanui is about to set records as a QB at Sioux City. Amazing to think that he never played QB at UH but has been able to do this well afterwards. Congratulations to Chad for making the All-Star team in his league!

Quarterback Chad Kapanui needs only six pass completions tonight to break DeGeorgia’s old record of 205 set in 2003. Considering the fact that Kapanui’s averaging 181.5 yards passing, he’ll set a new passing record, currently 327 yards shy of DeGeorgia’s 2002 record of 2,405 yards.

  40. Garret June 8, 2008 5:21 am

Rivals has UH at #81. They apparently cannot read the newspaper to learn that UH will be having the QB under center as well as in the shotgun. I do agree that John Estes is destined for the NFL, as he’s had an amazing career already.

KEEP AN EYE ON: Junior center John Estes seems destined to be the next Hawaii offensive lineman in the NFL. He was a first-team All-WAC performer last season and has started 27 consecutive games for the Warriors. He’ll again be asked to snap the ball in the shotgun formation, as McMackin – who was promoted from defensive coordinator when June Jones left for SMU – says the run-and-shoot will continue under new offensive coordinator Ron Lee. Senior defensive end David Veikune was a valuable reserve last season and moves into a starting role. He had seven sacks off the bench and will be counted on to provide a consistent pass rush this season.

STAR POWER: You know times have changed when the star player at Hawaii is on defense. Senior linebacker Adam Leonard was a Rivals.com All-WAC performer with 105 tackles, 11 tackles for a loss and four interceptions. He and senior linebacker Solomon Elimimian combined to make 246 tackles last season.

STRENGTHS: With so much turnover on the offense, McMackin will rely on his defense. Linebacker is a particular strength with Leonard and Elimimian, who combined to make 23 tackles for a loss. Kicker Dan Kelly has a strong leg and a knack for making the big kick. He made the game-winner against Nevada and sent the game against Louisiana Tech into overtime with field goal. The offensive line returns three starters well-versed in blocking for the run-and-shoot offense.

Still, there’s too much talent on defense for the Warriors to fall off completely. An Oct. 4 game at WAC favorite Fresno State will tell a lot about the Warriors. The future may be bright with new athletic director Jim Donovan, a Hawaii alum, looking to improve some dreadful facilities.

  41. Garret June 8, 2008 5:23 am

Update on a former UH Athletic Department administrator.

Five years removed from Arizona State University and running Sun Devil Stadium, Tom Sadler’s life has come full circle as the Arizona Sports & Tourism Authority’s new chief executive.

When he was assistant athletics director at ASU, Sadler had to balance the needs of the Arizona Cardinals and the Fiesta Bowl.

Sadler spent 19 years at ASU, where in addition to running Sun Devil Stadium he was on the host committee for Super Bowl XXX. He also served as tournament director for several National Collegiate Athletic Association and Pacific-10 Conference championship.

In 2003, he left the desert to become associate athletics director at the University of Hawaii, where he was responsible for the internal day-to-day operations of the department.

He also figured that job would eventually propel him to running an athletics department at a major college or university.

In fact, he told a Hawaii newspaper shortly after getting the job there that he had planned to stay on the islands for at least five years, and he would like the top job there if it came open. He was working for Herman Frazier, who also had a long career in the athletics department at ASU.

But after two years, Sadler came back to the Valley.

  42. Garret June 8, 2008 5:26 am

I agree with this Colorado paper that it is special when a college team has a stadium on its campus. I dormed at Texas for 3 years and it was great to be able to walk less than 100 yards to get to the stadium…and that really helped the student turnout!

College football games belong on college campuses. Local businesses that support the universities in their towns deserve the economic benefit provided by a home game, and fans who purchase season tickets should be able to sit in the seats they paid for.

  43. Garret June 8, 2008 5:27 am

If anyone is curious, you can take a test that NCAA officials take!

USA Football has posted an online test that college referees take to check their knowledge of the rules.

You’ll have to sign in and identify yourself as “non-staff official.” (Thanks to the Orlando Sentinel’s On Campus for this.) The test is 100 questions, with the first 15 true/false and the remaining 85 multiple choice.

  44. Garret June 8, 2008 5:28 am

This utility seems pretty cool–I hope that Warriors know about this, since other schools have just started using it.

Here are a few examples of the system’s use: A Nebraska coach on a recruiting trip in Dallas can write notes or draw diagrams on game video with a telestrator pen and those notes can be viewed by a player in his dorm room in Lincoln.

That same coach can record comments about plays that can be heard by players when they log in. A coach can also text message players to log into the system to study highlighted plays.

Nebraska started using the program last year and a handful of other teams are reviewing it for possible use. The New York Jets have already adopted it and about half the teams in the NFL are also considering it.

  45. Garret June 8, 2008 5:30 am

Here is a feature article on this interactive playbook system.

They’ve turned your grandfather’s black-and-white playbook of X’s and O’s into something resembling a video game.

This, it seems, is a football learning tool disguised as a toy.

This is an interactive playbook and scouting system that has been presented to and impressed the great Bill Gates himself. It is already being used by the Huskers and Jets and, if all goes as hoped, a flock of other teams before the football season kicks off. It sure beats staring at plays in a three-ring binder.

A Husker coach could be in his living room or in Boise, Idaho, for that matter, and use the system to not just view game film, but also write notes or draw diagrams on plays with a telestrator pen that could be viewed by a player sitting in his dorm room. If he wanted, the coach could record his voice over plays so that players could hear his thoughts when they logged in. He could even send a text message to the player: Hey, get on Huddle. I’ve highlighted a few plays you need to look at.

The program even has a tracking system that allows coaches, if so inclined, to see exactly how much time a player has spent on the system.

  46. Garret June 8, 2008 5:30 am

I’ve got to get to work now, but that is a lot of reading when people wake up Sunday morning!

  47. NYUH June 8, 2008 5:48 am

Will Jake Heun be the next Travis Sims? Big shoes to fill but that would be awesome.

  48. MeiLing June 8, 2008 5:57 am

Thanks for the news, Garret. Too bad about Chad Owen’s knee. ‘Auwe!

Good to see that Davone is getting some attention.

Caught up on the blog. Sorry to hear you’re at Kuakini, SteveM. Jus’ res’…

  49. djmitcho June 8, 2008 6:05 am

Good Morning! It’s another beautiful morning here on Lana’i. Well wishes to SteveM! Get better soon. It’s only June and I’m so excited for the season to start.
Jake Heun looks like a monster. Could you imagine if the Warriors came out in an I-Formation. Heun at fullback, and LWJ @ tailback. I think that would confuse everyone.

  50. wafan June 8, 2008 6:13 am

    Get well soon, SteveM!!!

  51. wafan June 8, 2008 6:18 am

Are you going through HNL or OGG? How long will you be at home?

Kind of odd. Been here 25 years and I still think of Hawai’i as home. I wonder if it is that way for a lot of ex-pat’s — not just from Hawai’i.

  54. wafan June 8, 2008 6:50 am

    IB . . .

Thanks for the correction — Neighbor Islands.

Not sure about being able to stop or leave the work incomplete at home. Always tough to leave a job half done — especially since Mom cannot do it any more. But, I will see what I can do in terms of how quickly I will be able to do things.

    aloha kakahiaka…

get well soon to both SteveM and Chad Owens!

wafan- you might want to consider hiring help to get everything done- hiring used to be a dirty word around here, but…the reality is the reality if you want something done in a certain time frame and you, alone, cannot get it done (or even when you just can’t do the job all by yourself). am having to do some really big house repairs- working with the contractors to do that which I can do (like remove old window frames) and for them to do the rest- build new frames and install new windows. good luck!

  62. FloridaTed June 8, 2008 7:49 am

    Morning/afternoon, Tsaiko-Nation and Tsai-Meister.

SteveM, too bad to hear of your illness, get well real soon, you hear?

Our boys look great, I can’t remember, (does anybody?), being that well stocked at QB. Already we have a freshman talent there in camp and haven’t any 09 recruits in yet.

If our running backs play half as good as they look, watch out Gators!

Inokes leadership in work-outs and practices clearly shows his unselfish character. His whole attitude makes him a fan favorite, wether he starts or not.

It’s going to be intense and highly interesting to find out who will emerge as a starter. I love (and dislike) all the unknowns this season. Can’t wait to get it going.

  63. FloridaTed June 8, 2008 7:53 am

We hear a lot about Alexander, but very little from Rausch. How is he doing? Did I miss something?

  64. Stretch June 8, 2008 7:57 am

Midori 7- check out the pic of Jon Medeiros, do you approve of his forearm??

See everyone later this evening. Time for me to go hack at a golf ball.

  65. FloridaTed June 8, 2008 7:59 am

O.k. I’m getting ready to watch Euro 08, Germany -Poland. That’s always a very intense game and fun to watch. Euro and World Cup is the only soccer I still watch. The highest level is all I can still enjoy. I guess I’m too americanized, lol.

  69. Pomai June 8, 2008 8:07 am

First offensive play in the romp in da swamp. Full house backfield, Heun, Jackson and Farmer, Myers will be scratching his head saying “what the Hell is this”? Run the same formation two or three times then hit them with the 4 wideouts, TOUCHDOWN HAWAII, game over.

  70. Stephen Tsai June 8, 2008 8:08 am

    Re: Rausch
Rausch is doing very well. He throws a nice pass. And he’s very agile.
Not sure if I reported this before, but there’s a gag order imposed on Rausch and Alexander. It was placed last week, and it came in response to television requests for interviews.

  71. Stephen Tsai June 8, 2008 8:09 am

    Re: Heun/Sims
They were different types of backs. Travis Sims was actually really fast. He was a north-south runner.
Heun is strictly a blocker/short-yardage guy.

  72. Stephen Tsai June 8, 2008 8:12 am

And don’t forget Libre. He’s probably the No. 1 back at the moment.
I’ll post photos of Libre’s workouts later.

  73. Pomai June 8, 2008 8:16 am

With all the talent we have in camp right now, coach Lee must be having a fun time coming up some new plays.

  74. wafan June 8, 2008 8:16 am

Hmmmm. Gag order, huh. I wonder what surprises Mack has under wraps for the ‘Gators and the WAC.

Patience. Not as if we have a choice about it, do we? But, expectations. Ahhh, let the imagination run amok!

you read right, i am going to our Father’s House today, Assembly of God in Moanalua, New Hope is coming up in the very near future. i have been invited to visit with some people there, so the time has come.

  84. Bulla June 8, 2008 8:39 am

Warriors look good. i hear that the latest QB throws the best ball, interesting, to say the least.

  85. Bulla June 8, 2008 8:40 am

i think Alexander is a prototype for Tebow wannabe, should use him on the Scout team so the defense can adjust to point of release, ht. of ball, and having to tackle a big ‘ol boy in the backfield.

  86. Bulla June 8, 2008 8:41 am

look for Veikune to have one Breakout season, too much speed and power to contain, and if the Offense makes the adjustment, the other D linemen will have very productive stats. don’t forget the LB’s, with Leonard, Eliminiam, and Soares, the Bash Brothers will have a field day.

  87. Bulla June 8, 2008 8:42 am

    ok gang, going to roll,

feel like Garret with all my posts in a row, but his are better, mine are just fluff.

have a blessed day to all, SteveM. get better, Peaches, you have my number, call us if you need anything……..aloha

    Hiya.
I just talked to Peaches. SteveM is resting and getting used to the idea that he needs to be in the hospital for awhile. Of course, he asked her to “bring da blog” with her when she goes down for a visit in a little while.Peaches will check to see what Kuakini has for connectivity and will post here as soon as she can after her recon.

She sends her love to everyone – “Hey, how did the blog find out???” I said, “We’re Tsai-kick”.

  92. Loa June 8, 2008 9:26 am

  95. LizKauai June 8, 2008 9:43 am

Wilson, Weakley, Harrington and Singh are in that group. Woo Hoo!!!

  96. LizKauai June 8, 2008 9:48 am

Check that, Wilson is playing with Singh.
The leaderboard confused me with 4 players on 11.

Weakley is playing Harrington on 12.

  97. bighilofan2 June 8, 2008 9:49 am

  100. Pauoa Boy June 8, 2008 10:02 am

    Morning Gang

SteveM – Hope you feeling better unko

Owens, another setback for him, sheesh, better lomi lomi them knees good cause once they go it’s hard for gain the quickness back.

The boys looking good and tick nowadays. Good thing get planny talent at quarterback, what is that like 9 QB’s now. Looks like Graunke is getting lost in the bunch, where is that guy? Turning out to be like Waldo…where you stay bruddah?

Just a thought, maybe should have one T-formation play with Heun at FB, LWJ and Libre split in the backfield, that way you get power, speed, and quickness all on the field at the same time and the defense not going know which way for go.

  101. Pauoa Boy June 8, 2008 10:08 am

Steele Jantz – that’s one pretty mean football name if you ask me. Only one freshman…au’ryte let the grooming begin. Literally though, cause bruddah look like one surfer dude with the hair, maybe should dread em like bruddah Colt did, I would like to see that picture.

  102. Butlerdidit June 8, 2008 10:14 am

A knee injury after three games ( around six weeks of practice at least) shouldn’t have blinded the coaching staff to Steele Jantz’s rocket arm, should it have?

  103. LizKauai June 8, 2008 10:14 am

Pauoa Boy, I think Graunke is taking care of academic business and working out. He’s still a leader in my book- he has the experience and and smarts and saved our butts many times. Until someone knows the system better than he and is proven on the gameday field, Tyler is still “my” go-to guy.

    There, I said it

  104. LizKauai June 8, 2008 10:16 am

    Wow, chawan, you move fast!

  112. LizKauai June 8, 2008 11:18 am

jm2375- no worries… let statisdtic vpeeps foggeddabout UH… for now… BWAHAHAHAHA!

  113. Pauoa Boy June 8, 2008 11:26 am

Auntie Liz – I not bagging on Graunke, just think that as a Senior regardless of your issues you should be out there with the boys leading by example. If you gotta catch up academically and the such then bad on you. Graunke was just about a shoe-in to start this year but because bruddah never handle business like he should of now he on the verge of riding 2nd string again maybe even farther now with the depth at QB. I hope he can prove me wrong cause he has the potential to be solid as shown over the years and I still support him. Yeah he knows the offense but if you not working out with your receivers, come game time going be all off target. Timing is key to this offense so receivers and QB’s gotta gel like peanut butter and jelly. Right now, he giving me a headache with all these issues he gotta handle first. To me that’s not leadership, as a Senior it’s time to take two steps forward not two steps back!

  114. Pauoa Boy June 8, 2008 11:28 am

On a lighter note, glad to see Funaki taking charge out there he deserves to get more PT this year.

  115. marlis June 8, 2008 11:44 am

    bh2

you doing push ups with vili before the game…ha…good luck.

how are you going to bypass the florida stadium rules saying no foreign objects on the field of play??….j/k

  116. LizKauai June 8, 2008 12:04 pm

Pauoa Boy- Every person has his epiphany (or not). Remember Rolo before JJ’s accident and after the accident? He grew up very suddenly, “got it” about the Warriors and what he could be for the team. He still gets it, by what I can see…. which is really nothing.
As a fan, I trust in Ke Akua and support the team and pray that each member will “get it” and bring what they have to the great potluck.

As a mom/auntie/grandma, I know that an individual cannot see “it” until they believe “it”. That kind of maturity comes from within and cannot be forced. The individual needs to have the susceptibilities.

    Like Big Brown yesterday.
It wasn’t in him that day.
And Kent Desormeaux knew when to back off.

Any one of our players has the potential for greatness. I pray the team will collectively come alive this year and have their greatest year yet!

    Ok…
    gotta clean fish tank…
    then La Mancha again!

  117. whitey June 8, 2008 12:10 pm

Good morning to all the Tsaikos and my best to SteveM on a speedy recovery. Left high low this am and was lurking thru the blog.

BHF2, yes you did good. I thank you for taking the time to meet with me and sharing some “thoughts and ideas”. The secret birthday party in high low was very nice and my friend was totally surprised.

Looking at the photos of this year’s Warriors, they look like they are starting to take on the next level. Not easy, but if you not willing to take chances and “bust your butts”, the next level will never come. Depth was always a problem in the past, but with Coach Mac’s approach to the game, everyone is important and have a chance to compete, which is a breath of fresh air compared to the past years.

  118. GRM June 8, 2008 12:26 pm

SteveM, Take care and get well soon. I too was stuck in the hospital for quite a while.

  119. Pauoa Boy June 8, 2008 12:28 pm

Aunty Liz – Das why hard to digest the fact that he not out there with the boys. He gotta find the “it” factor and believe in himself and his abilities that this is his team. As a QB you are the brains of the operation and gotta have ownership of your team. Without the head the body no can function. So what if get so many QB’s competing with you, as a Senior and someone who been in the program the longest at the position you gotta understand that you are the man and have to step up and own it regardless if you want to. To me it seems Funaki is owning the team right now and in return is gaining the respect of the team. No one is born with leadership skills, but being in the program for as long as he has I’m sure he had enough mentors to show him the ropes and is smart enough to develop his own leadership style. From what I am seeing and hearing seems to me he’s still searching for himself, so I hope he figures it out quickly cause the season is right around the corner. Regardless I would love to see him prove me wrong and step up and take us back to the BCS where we belong! Excited for the season to start and hope that everything is all pono by the time we go to the Swamp, wrestle the gators and make em Tapout! Au’ryte Go Warriors!

  120. Stretch June 8, 2008 1:05 pm

midori7 – saying that your Dad has nicer forearms is okay but if that is your fetish, that is kind of gross. hahahahaha

  121. LizKauai (Treo) June 8, 2008 2:03 pm

Broke da odda leg! ‘K den.

  123. FloridaTed June 8, 2008 2:54 pm

The U.S.A. is putting up a great fight against Argentina, 0 – 0 at the half. The Argentines coming with a furious pace and our goalie is outstanding so far. Our guys gaining confidence the longer they can hold out. They had quite a few surprising counter attacks almost succeeding. I wonder if Argentina can keep up this crazy pace, I kinda doubt it. We shall see, should be a good second half. On ESPN Classic by the way.

  124. FloridaTed June 8, 2008 2:55 pm

That’s the kind of Soccer I like, attacking and fast pace.

  125. Pauoa Boy June 8, 2008 3:06 pm

Just wen watch Kung Fu Panda with the keikis…not bad for the kids but I would wait for the DVD to come out before you waste money at the movies.

  126. wafan June 8, 2008 4:24 pm

Anyone know how SteveM is doing? Hope Peaches is doing fine!

  127. FloridaTed June 8, 2008 4:24 pm

Well, the U.S.A. hung on against the Nr. 1 team in the world rankings. Just as I thought, the Americans had the fresher legs in the second half and could have actually won that game. 80,000 in Giants Stadium for a “friendly” soccer game, wow!

  128. FloridaTed June 8, 2008 4:25 pm

    Where the heck is everybody?

  129. wafan June 8, 2008 4:28 pm

    F-Ted . . .

I think we are the only ones here.

How are you doing down in Florida? Are you folks experiencing the heat wave, too?

  130. FloridaTed June 8, 2008 4:42 pm

    Hi, wafan,

We’re in the mid-90’s, actually better then the rest of the southern mainland and at night it goes down to the mid- 70’s, not too bad.

  131. Long Time UH Fan June 8, 2008 4:42 pm

    Wafan,

I talked to Peaches. She said that SteveM has a slight case of pneumonia. He is being treated with antibiotics. Right now they don’t know why he is still running a fever. Basically he has to break his fever and he should be OK. We are all pulling for him to get better.

  132. FloridaTed June 8, 2008 4:45 pm

    Hi, Long Time UH,

thanks for the news. Pneumonia has to be taken seriously nowadays. I’m glad he’s in the Hospital to be treated.

  133. wafan June 8, 2008 4:52 pm

    F-Ted . . .

90’s?!?!?! Geez. We are going to get up to the low 60’s the rest of the week. It would not be so bad if it did not rain. Couldy I can live with.

    LTUHF . . .

Good to hear SteveM is doing better. I was worried about him because pneumonia can turn real nasty, real quick. No doubt Peaches told him to get better! Smart man to listen to her.

  134. wafan June 8, 2008 4:56 pm

    SteveM . . .

The best news is that it is not viral! Yay!

  140. wafan June 8, 2008 5:34 pm

    HiFlyer . . .

Responding to you question of a few days ago. I was not still awake at 3-something in the morning. I had just gotten up and was waiting for my toast before leaving for school.

Sorry I took so long to answer — I was trying to catch up with the blog.

  141. Kekoa June 8, 2008 6:10 pm

Me and my faithful companion Koakane spent a very relaxing afternoon up at Kuakini Hospital Rm #469. SteveM & Peaches were happy to have company since we were one of the few people that came in without (1) more needles to stick in him, and (2) not threatening to give him an enema!

Steve is making good progress, and should be ready to roll in a few days.

  142. gigi-hawaii © June 8, 2008 6:33 pm

That’s good news about SteveM, gang! Thanks for the updates.

I emailed a get well letter to him and hope that Peaches prints it and gives it to him.

  143. Maverick June 8, 2008 6:42 pm

    SteveM –
God speed recovery , and our prayers are for you.

This blog needs you back soon.

Opening season is knocking on the screen door.

  150. FloridaTed June 8, 2008 7:36 pm

I’m glad they took SteveM to the Hospital. Most people who get into serious trouble with pneumonia are always waiting too long before seeking treatment. Very good they took quick action, that’s the best defense.

  151. Stretch June 8, 2008 7:38 pm

Kekoa – actually shot not too bad, won $118, but after paying for lunch, didn’t come away with much. That’s okay.

  152. Kekoa June 8, 2008 7:45 pm

Clicking on my name will allow you to see that SteveM is recovering very nicely with the help of his lovely wife Peaches.

    Florida Ted:

If you’re still looking for an editor, here are five potential referral sources for free-lance editors in your own community.

First, if you have a publishing company near by, call their editorial department and talk to one of the staff editors.

Second, if you have a college or university nearby, contact its English Department. Many faculty members augment their teaching incomes this way.

Third, try the book reviewers who write for your daily or weekly newspapers. Nowadays, most are free-lancers, but they still stay connected to your area’s literary community.

Fourth, if your book is non-fiction or identified with a particular genre such as children’s literature, then talk to folks who are working directly in the field for help.

Fifth, talk to your local librarian or, even better, the librarian at the local college or university for referrals.

Hope these suggestions help you find someone.

  159. Da Punchbowl Kid June 8, 2008 8:50 pm

Busy weekend for me, so I was off the blog. I just want to make sure I give a shout out to my brother SteveM. Get well soon Steve! My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Is Steve allowed to have visitors?

  160. FloridaTed June 8, 2008 8:52 pm

    Capitol,

Thanks for your efforts, but it’s all taken care of. I have an agent in Seattle, but just wanted a pair of eyes, not involved in the business. It’s all good, I’ve also joined a writers group here. Again, mahalo.

    Hi, DPK,

It’s getting hot around here. 96 today, right now about 80, but we’re still better off than some of the rest of the Mainland. The nice thing over here is that you can go to the beach at 6:30 pm and watch the sunset at 9. During the day you’re fried in 10 min.

  168. Peaches June 8, 2008 10:14 pm

    Good evening Tsaikos and Tsaikettes,

Thank you for your thoughts and wishes for Steve.

Today his fever has been down which is very good. He has a CT Scan scheduled for tomorrow morning and may be discharged sooner than expected.

Thank you Kekoa and Koakane for stopping by for a visit. You cheered him up. He has never liked hospital stays and is going stir-crazy. Before I left him this evening I told him, “If you had listened to me sooner and went to the doctor on Wednesday, you would be at home right now on the blog.” He just sighed.

    Have a great week everyone.

I read on here about Mel DeLaura’s training. Is there any way you can provide me a copy of it. Also how impressive is LWJ look so far? And how is Lofton and Tinoco doing? How is Lane doing? Haven’t heard much about him.

  172. UHfan808 June 8, 2008 10:32 pm

Wow my first post since early April. Glad to see the blog is still here. lol

Will say more later but have tons to say about Tsaichedelic Tsaiko activities and get-togethers. Boy Tsaikos just know how to have (good clean) fun!

  174. UHfan808 June 8, 2008 10:36 pm

So excited to be here guess I just had to say it twice!!! (How dat happened? I only pressed “submit” once!)

  175. Pomai June 8, 2008 10:38 pm

Is that one of those new under amour shirts SteveM is wearing? LOL

  176. Stephen Tsai June 8, 2008 10:45 pm

    Hey, there, UHfan808.
And I apologize for being dyslexic. I had it as 808uhfan the past few posts.

  177. Stephen Tsai June 8, 2008 10:46 pm

Just back from the big banquet tonight.
Coach Mack was the guest speaker.
In the audience was …. Manti Te‘o.

  178. addahknowjoe June 8, 2008 10:49 pm

    Oh my! UHfan808! Welcome back!

So, where have you been? What you been up to?

Haven’t read from you in a long time.

    =)

  179. addahknowjoe June 8, 2008 10:51 pm

ST- What was this big banquet you went to tonite?

  180. Addahknowsports June 8, 2008 10:52 pm

    Hi UHFan-

We missed ya (on the blog, that is)

Just got home and catching up. Good to hear that SteveM is doing well. FloridaTed is right. A lot of people don’t go to doctor until too late.

    SteveM-

We are so glad you went to the doctor. Pneumonia is nothing to mess around with.

  181. Stephen Tsai June 8, 2008 10:56 pm

It was that All-State/HHSAA/Advertiser high school banquet. Or something like that.
    I was a late addition.
I only got invited because Mack asked our boss Curtis: Is Stephen going?
    Suddenly, I’m on the list.
It was pretty good. Mufi was there. And Carole Kai. OK, I know to everybody else that that might not be a big deal. But Carole Kai was our idol back in the day.
Anyway, there were about 700 people there, I think.
And Mack said a lot of great things about Keith Amemiya.
And, Chawan, Princess Leila was there.

  182. Stephen Tsai June 8, 2008 10:59 pm

    Manti Te‘o is a strong-looking guy.

  183. UHfan808 June 8, 2008 11:00 pm

    Hey ST!
No worry, I can be any combination of UH, fan, and/or 808. If I don’t catch something, I’m sure Midori or Stretch will let me know. lol

Thank you for the darts challenge the other night! Play us again next time???

Also thank you so much for the HA tour. What a blast to be hanging out with you Tsai-meister and checking out your work desk. Liked your Paula Abdul pic!

  184. JaM June 8, 2008 11:01 pm

    SteveM…get well soon!

  185. Stephen Tsai June 8, 2008 11:06 pm

    UHfan808:
It was an honor to play against you and Ms. Intense.
By the way, I sat next to a woman who used to sit next to the A-House family at football games. She said when the “kids” were young — that Midori7 and her brother — they complained about wanting to go home early.
Now look at Midori7. You can’t get her to leave a UH event.

  186. UHfan808 June 8, 2008 11:27 pm

    Addaknowjoe & Addaknowsports!
How are you this fine Sunday almost Monday? So good to hear from you and that you recovered from Friday! A-joe (& et al!) thanks for the cheering and much needed laughs, I think that’s why my ribs still hurtin’ today; A-sports you brought your missles! Ho unbelieveable and wonderful job you and Koakane did to “finish” us off! Spectacular!

  187. Marvin June 8, 2008 11:33 pm

    ST,
Do you think we have a shot at Manti coming to the Warriors?

    Hi UHFan-

It was good fun! And ditto what ST said about playing you and your sistah. Looking forward to the next event/challenge. Gotta work on my patnah and get ‘um to acquire selective hearing so dat buggah can focus. (i wonda if he stay lurking…)

  190. UHfan808 June 9, 2008 12:06 am

Hmm…Where I been? Long story. lol. (Midori fill in what I left out, pls.)

Midori and I have been keeping busy since soon after the Sugar Bowl. Supposedly she had a plan to support other UH sports other than football. We decided we wanted to be more than “just” UH fooball fans. Hahaha, ultimately her plan temporarily eased our football withdrawals. lol.

One day Midori says let’s support the other UH sports (by going to the games) and I say ok! The rest is history. Since then we’ve attended men’s basketball, men’s volleyball, women’s volleyball (1x), (she briefly visited softball twice), and baseball in combinations or not sometimes two, three, four times a week (including other wonderful Tsaiko get-togethers).

Say before I forget, many, many, many thank yous and mahalos to TY Aiea, UHfan808’s xsf, Stretch, & UHfan808’s friend for sharing tickets with us. And in the process, we’ve had tons of fun going to the games fellow Tsaikos and Tsaikettes, Addaknowjoe & addaknowsports, Calvin from Kona & his friend, Chawan_cut & friend, d1shima & wife, G’nalo, James, Jason, Kekoa & Dad, Koakane, myki & sj-macro, Sleeze, Stretch (& his other friends), UHfan808’s friend. (Hope I didn’t miss anyone!)

Unfortunately immediately after the last baseball game we got baseball/pre-season football withdrawls. Since then we’ve been keeping busy doing our own Tsaiko post-Spring season/pre-season football events. lol. This includes/will include bowling, darts, billiards, movies, miniature golf, tennis, trying different and new eating places (to us), eating, shopping, and more eating.

It’s working out so far but we both agree nothing will ever take the place of dear “old” UH football! (Thank goodness K5 started televising last year’s games last week and this week!?!)

    Go Warriors!

  191. Kekoa June 9, 2008 12:12 am

Gigi…hold out your hand (WHACK!..sound of slippah hitting hand)…

Hmmm…I could have sworn we said NOT to post anything about the blog bash until we have things confirmed by ST. He wanted it to be released only after he had confirmations made. Even then, he would post it on WB first, and then we could promote it everywhere else.

Gigi, you must learn to listen louder. We barely have a system in place to accept the RSVP and where to send the cash. There will be a matrix to update that sort of info that Stretch is building even as we speak.

    Patience is a virtue.

  192. UHfan808 June 9, 2008 12:18 am

    ST-
Yep, just look at Midori now. She and I stay until the very end of every game. Sometimes we sit there and can’t believe the game is over. Nearly always we are last to leave.

  193. UHfan808 June 9, 2008 12:21 am

    ST-
Glad you got to attend the banquet. Any interesting news?

  194. UHfan808 June 9, 2008 12:24 am

Nitey nite all; heal quickly and sweet dreams!

  205. UHfan808 June 9, 2008 1:24 am

    Hey Koakane my darts competitor!
You were so funny on Friday. Remember our darts “challenge:”
You: Hey UH, I challenge you one game.
    me: Okay.
    You: You go first.
    me: Okay.
You: Try hit the bullseye. First one hits the bullseye wins.
me: Okay. (Throws darts and completely misses the center.)
You: Okay now turn. (Throws darts and hits the bullseye.)
You: Yay, I win! (“Skips away” with a great big smile to report to Stretch that he won.)
    Note:
    – Dart machine was “off”
    – Five minutes later, repeat scenario above but hits two bullseyes instead, then asks me to take picha. lol

So Koakane, you sure you not the hustler? And then with what did you fertilize A-sports “missles” so she got all the correct “-out” shots to win??? lol.

OMG, remember to give us chance next time! hehehe.

Thanks so much for a great time!

RE Computer- Unfortunately computer not yet fixed. Blogging from my cell phone (centro similar to treo). Thanks for remembering!

  206. UHfan808 June 9, 2008 1:30 am

    Whoops –
second to the last “You:” should read, “Okay my turn.”

  207. Lopaka43 June 9, 2008 1:33 am

Great story by Michael Baughman in the Oregonian about growing up in Hawaii as a teenager from the Mainland attending Punahou. Full of details that ring true like the following:

“The gulf between rich and poor is exaggerated in Hawaii, and, for many residents, Punahou has always symbolized rich haoles and always will. But poor boys and girls, most often athletes in my day, also attend the school. Though some angry fans called us haoles (Hawaiian slang for whites) when we ran onto the stadium football field, we had a Samoan running back, a Filipino quarterback, Hawaiian tackles and Japanese guards — and me, at right end, beside my best Hawaiian friend, Curtis Iaukea”

  208. UHfan808 June 9, 2008 1:37 am

    Hi Liz!
How are you? Were you in a play or concert? And are you coaching soccer now??? Wow, you’re always on the move, I don’t know how you do it!

    Hi Kekoa,
Missed you Friday! Hope all is okay. How’s your garage’s makeover paint job? Sorry I missed Pauoa Boy’s breakfast CC. Maybe I’ll meet him another time.

  209. UHfan808 June 9, 2008 1:43 am

ST- As always, thank you for keeping us updated on the Warrior team. Good to see pictures too. Btw, please be sure to catch forearms in pics for my twin sister Midori! 1/2 j/k

  212. wafan June 9, 2008 3:31 am

    Good morning everyone!

Welcome back UHfan808 — glad to hear you have been keeping busy.

  213. wafan June 9, 2008 3:36 am

    Geez. Unbelievable.

There is a heavy snow warning up for the Cascades. Great. They are expecting a foot or more of snow today. Of course, it will rain like crazy down here. Oh well. At least we might not have to worry about a water shortage this summer.

$4.22/gal is the WA average for regular petrol. Dang! They are expecting it to get above the $5 mark this summer.

  214. wafan June 9, 2008 3:39 am

King County (where Seattle is) is thinking of banning bottled water. It takes 3 liters of water to manufacture a one-liter bottle of water. In addition, the transportation of the filled bottles is driving up the price. With the good water available in Washington I could never quite understand why people would insist on purchasing bottled water. If it was for the convience of having water then why not just refill it? Sill people.

  215. MeiLing June 9, 2008 4:25 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

Mahalo for the updates on SteveM, all. Ok, D-line in da body, break that fever!

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

Nice to see UHFan808 posting again. By the looks of it, she was making up for lost time!!

Thanks gigi for clearing your blog. We don’t want to start putting out info that might change. It will start confusing people like the last time we was starting to put this party together. More better we send it out one time with everything confirmed.

  217. Loa June 9, 2008 5:54 am

    morning gang!

Kekoa/Koakane/Peaches – thanks for the update on SteveM, glad to hear he’s in recovery mode

  220. rainbow warrior #80 June 9, 2008 6:20 am

i don’t know if i’m the only one to feel this way, but when i looked at the SB travel list, my reaction was “who cares?” HF was the worst AD ever but he still was the AD, so IMHO he had the authority to award anyone he wanted to attend the SB(including family members). the only thing that would be unethical is if these people received per diem from the university. also the only people that needs to be investigated is people who received per diem that didn’t need to be there. there were a bunch of names that listed their title as a UH employee, but that doesn’t mean that they actually had to be at the SB in a working capacity. but if the complaint is that so-and-so got to go but so-and-so didn’t, then i think that’s just petty

  221. whitey June 9, 2008 6:30 am

It is that time of the morning to go to Jacks, then put in my physical excercise/therapy, golf. See you all later.

  222. al June 9, 2008 7:03 am

    good morning whitey!

let’s see….i’ll have the homemade corned beef hash w/eggs over easy, wheat toast, hash browns, and of course a side of pancakes extra butter.

    hahahaha.

    golf, again!!!?

why don’t ya come over to honolulu and give the gigi’s some lessons?

  223. al June 9, 2008 7:07 am

    rainbow warrior….um #80, what year?

i agree with you that the fumbler had the authority, but, doesn’t someone have to approve decsions?

or at least if he/she didn’t approve and its after the fact now, shouldn’t they come out and at least publicly state their disdain?

  224. bighilofan2 June 9, 2008 7:09 am

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere!

I’d sure like to know what our stud DBs/safeties really think about da receivers.

  225. FloridaTed June 9, 2008 7:16 am

    Morning/afternoon, Tsaiko-Nation and Tsai-Meister.

I truly wish we could put this whole SB mess behind us, it’s destracting from the upcoming season with all it’s hopes and dreams. I’m ready to concentrate on that.

The HA and Ferd, as well as ST with the community have done their job. Let the socalled authorities figure it out.

I’d rather see the great pictures and reports on how our boys are doing.

    Have a great day everybody.

  226. al June 9, 2008 7:28 am

    you are right ted.

okay, i’ll take your comment under immediate advisement and shall personally, no longer comment on this subject matter in the future.

  229. FloridaTed June 9, 2008 7:35 am

I wonder if it’s way to early, but I’m curious if any kind of picture has begun to emerge as far as our offense is concerned. With so many newcomers there, anything is possible, in any direction.

  230. bighilofan2 June 9, 2008 7:36 am

    Al,
good morning. Let’s look back, and then project forward. Virginia is Herman’s boss. Mazie an da boyz wanna go SB. Girlz like go too, feel day wurked forever for UH and we’re all one big Rainbow family an wanna play in da revelry. UH credit card get plenny room. June talkin anykine. Herman talkin anykine, tellin us JJ gonna stay, contract being worked – both them not saying anyting till afta XMas, too late for make noise oddawize bachi to da max on e’rybody. [so fahr, so true?]

now, guud riddanz to HF, too bad fur JJ, an we’re left wit Chancellor, JD, JD’s assistantz, Mack an da boyz, an a bunch ah odda guyz n galz.

so wat yu like doo? whoever is in charge, I no like yu make like da Legislatahs, all talk an point fingahs an no moah gutz fo stan an fight. if yu one legislatah, an yu get da grease fo ram it big time up da buttz, den i say go one on one wit da Chancellor and JD. an if yu tryin fo bump Amemiya up an slide Carl off to da side, i tinkin yu gotta take care Carl too. I wuzn’t too trilled about him in da beginning, tinkin he had to be canned like HF too, but lookin back an lookin weah Warrior Nation stay now, I tinkin he had a big hand in where we are today.

my main ting is dat Coach Mack and James Donovan know that Warrior Nation will support what they’re thinking. An I no hear their thoughts, so I no like make trouble if they think their crews are doing what they want.

but Al, I not sure wat Jim D stay tinkin. Carl’s standard of living prolly adjusted to his new pay. Prolly he knowz it goin down. be upfront. No need beat da bradda up for reduce pay. Iz dat what yu tinkin?

fo be big national powah, going need plenny peeps doin plenny jobs. if wuz me,
I’d tell Jimmy D go take a copy ah diz blog to Virginia and ovah lunch I wuud tell da lady, “Virginia, our friend Carl, I like lateral him ovah dare an put Amemiya ovah here. We can move on this now, good timing. We need Carl ovah dare, I need Amemiya ovah here… Good fit with all the high school coaches for all sports programs….. Helps UH in so many ways. Plus, Carl knowz where all the thumbtacks and staples and paper stay, so for a big athletic power to hook up with a big educational section, good fit…. yadi yada…..” IMHO

  231. koakane™ June 9, 2008 8:32 am

    rw#80

I do not dispute the fact da fumbler had the right to name people to the sb. IMHO I don’t feel he bothered to check out the guild lines in which to make those choices or for that matter consulted the proper channels.

    good go hear you opinion

  232. al June 9, 2008 11:55 am

    big hilo

sorry, i just now read your post.
i think you know how i feel about this.

i did say i will no longer venture into this subject matter.

you make good points i concur with most of them.

i just find it more embarassing for the university to try and cover up such questionable deeds. also for them to have the audacity to even think that, we, the people are so ignorant that they could pull the wool over eyes.

    das all bull.
