Bolla on leave from team

The UH-Manoa Chancellor’s Office is confirming that Jim Bolla is on “indefinite leave” from the women’s basketball team.

Remember Kani Kauahi?
It appears he’s one of the candidates for the o-line coaching job at UH.
He has impressive credentials: Played 11 seasons in the NFL (Seahawks, Packers, Cardinals, Chiefs), and he’s coached in the NFL (Cardinals), CFL, XFL and AFL.
He also played for the Warriors.

I would like to thank all of you for you kind words and thoughts for Kristin. You are an extraordinary group of people. She was amazed at the prayers for her when she was in the hospital and she would again be amazed at your outpouring now. I copied yesterdays blog and forwarded it to her daughters. I have not completed plans for her service but I am working with Kekoa and will soon advise. Thank you all so much. You have all touched my heart and Kristin is smiling on all of you…..Aloha

Mr. Kauahi’s credentials looks like he could be a very VALUABLE piece of the puzzle, the difference between a losing season in 09 and a winning season in 09 and years to come.

Hi Steven – I know that on paper this O-line coaching position would replace Alex Gerke’s, but based on his credentials, it sounds like it’s Brian Smith’s. Are things being shuffled? Thanks,.

  14. Kazz February 13, 2009 9:37 am

    D1,

I am still in favor of having both teams pick their fastest runner and lining them up on the opposite 40 yard lines then racing for the ball at the 50 instead of a coin toss to determine starting possession.

Of course the risk of injury would be high, but damn was I entertained watching that.

The XFL could have worked had Vince McMahon, Jr. funded it, laid out the basic concepts and hired someone with an extensive football background to run the thing.

Of course crappy timeslots and wishy washy network commitments played a big part in killing it, not to mention their “balls out” approach to trying to directly compete with the NFL despite they’d be doing it in the off-season.

  15. FloridaTed February 13, 2009 9:37 am

By the way, why did the guy call himself He Hate Me?

    Per Wikipedia –

He Hate Me” is the phrase Smart chose to place on the back of his Las Vegas Outlaws football jersey during the one and only season of the XFL (2001). Though most sports organizations allow only a surname or first initial and surname to be placed on the back of a jersey, XFL rules permitted players’ jerseys to be stitched with whatever words they wanted.

Smart explained the origin of the grammatically non-standard phrase in a January 30, 2004 article with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel as, “Basically, my brother’s my opponent. After I win, he’s gonna hate me. It is what it is. It’s a saying I was saying when I’d feel something wasn’t going my way. For example, (when) I was on the squad in Vegas and coach was putting other guys in, (if) I felt I’m better than them, you know, hey, ‘he hate me.’ See what I’m saying? Give me a chance. That’s all I ask. It came from the heart. Within. The way I felt.”[6]

When Smart and the Outlaws played divisional rival Los Angeles Xtreme, two Xtreme players put “I Hate He” and “I Hate He Too” on the back of their jerseys to express their disdain for Smart. In a later game between those two teams, those two players changed their nicknames to “Still Hate He” and “Still Hate He Too”, respectively. The curious maxim also caught the eye of American audiences (as well as Smart’s future Carolina Panthers teammate Jake Delhomme, who named one of his thoroughbreds, “She Hate Me”). In an episode of the dramatic TV series CSI: NY, a dead roller derby player is named “She Hate Me.” The phrase “He Hate Me” was used on a headband worn by Bucky Katt in a 2004 Get Fuzzy comic strip storyline by cartoonist Darby Conley involving Bucky’s irrational hatred of beavers. The moniker was also referenced by Spike Lee to title his movie She Hate Me (the main character gives his ex-fiancé the nickname after she leaves him for a lesbian). Mark Cuban has changed it to “He Fine Me” for his shirts worn at Dallas Mavericks games, in reference to the NBA often fining the flamboyant owner. When the XFL was disbanded, Don Walker of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel wrote an article headlined, “He Fold Me”. “He Hate Me”, along with the Sky Cam, is one of the few remnants of the short lived XFL to have a lasting impact.

Of the moniker, Smart said “That’s a part of me, so I never get tired of that. It’s like my birth name, except it only came later than birth.”

  22. d1島 February 13, 2009 9:52 am

Rod Smart was found hanging from a chandelier in his apartment several years after finishing his playing days. Some theorize that the name on his back was a “cry for help.”

So I’m looking at this program from the “Rainbow Warriors Football Awards Banquet” in 1979, and it lists the night’s events. The program closes with “the singing of the alma mater.”

With JP now suspended and no corners returning with any real D1 playing experience (even on Special Teams), are the Warriors looking for any late signees at corner? maybe another JC corner or two?

SO…any pleasant surprises (i.e., late signees) potentially in the works for Coach Mack and Warriors?

    Mahalo!

  61. Stephen Tsai February 13, 2009 10:51 am

    Here’s the menu:
Salads — Tossed green, potato salad, green bean salad vinaigrette, tuna salad, fruit salad, Jell-O.
Cold platter — Sliced hickory ham, sliced salami, chicken galantine, American cheese, Swiss cheese.
Entree — Steamship round of beef, mahimahi saute meauniere, roast chicken.
    Starch — Steamed rice, rolls.
Dessert — Cheese cake, Chocolate Bavarian cream pie.

I think UH is pretty set at corner. The big loss was actually Kevin Williams, who just didn’t get the work done.
Not sure how he ended up signing elsewhere since he probably won’t be eligible this year.

  67. roysan16 February 13, 2009 10:56 am

Reading more about Warrior’s Davis being arrested in today’s HA sports written by Curtis L , I’m a little confused of what’s going on.

He writes……,” He remained in the cellblock at the main police station pending charges”.

Yet in the article he lists all the charges.

“He was booked on one count of second-degree sexual assault, two counts of fourth-degree sexual assault, one count each of second- and third-degree assault, burglary and third-degree promotion of a detrimental drug”.

And the part where the CL writes “He remained in the cellblock at the main police station pending charges”… is this suppose to mean… He remained in the cellblock at the main police station pending ***arraignment***”.

Pending arraignment would make more sense to me…not unless the DA (gulp)…has more charges to file.

After the DA files the charges, the arraignment is the next step for Davis. And this can be within 24-48-96 hours, hopefully for him the sooner the better. And if it happened this afternoon, or tomorrow, or the next…and hopefully for him that the judge doesn’t set his bail too high.

At this point the charges against him are really egregious. And I hope that he has a fair trial.

But for all the other young athletes,..and even adults, there are life lessons to be learned here…and not meaning to sound redundant…but you really are going to be held accountable for your unlawful actions.

    Good morning Tsai-kos!!

Sorry to hear about the passing of Corky Trinidad. I loved his cartoons and have missed them the past few months. My sympathies to his family.

Does that means neither local paper has a local editorial cartoonist on staff? Is Dick Adair willing to come back or is he having too much fun in retirement?

So Kani Kauahi means that Brian Smith isn’t coaching the O-line anymore…or…something? I’m missing something here, aren’t I?

Kani’s got one heck of a great resume…I never knew he was a starting center in the NFL like Samson (the next Kani?).

I would think it should be in the reverse order. By the way, the banquet was held on June 13, which was a Friday.

Wow, that was a good team. Hawaii’s 1979 baseball team might have been better though. Funny how that works out at times. Just like that 2006 Hawaii football team that might have been the best ever in Manoa, but the 2007 team is the one that was ranked in the top twenty-five, won the WAC, and was invited to a BCS bowl game.

    Stephen Tsai:

    Here’s the menu:
Salads — Tossed green, potato salad, green bean salad vinaigrette, tuna salad, fruit salad, Jell-O.
Cold platter — Sliced hickory ham, sliced salami, chicken galantine, American cheese, Swiss cheese.
Entree — Steamship round of beef, mahimahi saute meauniere, roast chicken.
    Starch — Steamed rice, rolls.
Dessert — Cheese cake, Chocolate Bavarian cream pie.

So, to our bloggers, is the menu better or worse today?

I’m not a picky eater. If the Awards Banquet only had sushi, some kind of chicken, poke, and dessert I’ll be ok.

My only gripe is not enough plates to separate the fruits, the salad, from the entrée. Eating roast turkey with gravy and some mandarin oranges on top is not exactly appealing.

Regarding Eric Tokunaga (or “Toku” as some of us used to call him), he may not have been fleet of foot, but he is one of UH’s all-time surest fielders, could turn a pretty double play as well as anyone and had to be one of the best at laying down a clutch (and often, expected) bunt. In fact, many of the players of the late 80’s were much better at bunting than those in the late 90’s & new millenium come to think of it

Kani Kauahi definitely has the credentials to be UH’s new OL coach! It seems to me that he would be an excellent choice. ST mentions that UH might have a few other candidates…if anyone is chosen over him, then UH will have an awesome coach because it would seem to be hard to be better qualified than Kani!

  309. Garret February 13, 2009 6:27 pm

This writer talked about recruits who are “soft commits”…UH had a few of them earlier this year and those soft commits are always a problem for coaches because they cannot offer the scholarship to another recruit and risk losing out on both if the “soft commit” chooses someone else.

More and more, we see players who are referred to as ‘soft commits’. To this day, I can’t understand that term. That’s like saying you can be married but still want to date.

The rest of the article makes some interesting points about the trends in college recruiting.

  310. Garret February 13, 2009 6:31 pm

ESPN wanted to Missouri to move a game to Thursday…in return, they gave Missouri two additional nationally televised games on ESPN! If I was JD, I’d see what UH can get the next time ESPN approaches UH to move a game…or maybe JD should give them a call to see what UH could get if they moved the BSU or Fresno State game up a day?

Nevada will get an additional game on ESPN because Missouri moved their Nebraska game to a Thursday. Great exposure for Nevada, and it would be great for the WAC if Nevada would win!

In exchange for playing the teams’ Big 12 opener Oct. 8 — five days later than originally scheduled — Mizzou will get two more games televised nationally by ESPN in the first five games, Pinkel said.

Missouri expects its game Sept. 26 at Nevada to be moved to a Friday night slot, and the Sept. 5 opener against Illinois is also set to be televised, Pinkel said at a recruiting function in St. Louis.

Interesting statistical study found that special teams success does *not* seem to correspond with team success in the NFL.

If you study the overall chart, the worst special teams in the league belonged to the Indianapolis Colts, a team that won 12 games. The Dolphins were 30th and they won 11 games and the AFC East. The Arizona Cardinals were 28th and they won the NFC title and went to the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl champion Steelers were 20th, for goodness sake!

And the great special teams units, the ones that dominated the NFL? They didn’t fare so well.

    Take the Buffalo Bills.

They have the distinction of being the best special teams in the NFL for the third time in five years — and they have not made the playoffs any of those seasons. In fact, the Bills haven’t been in the playoffs since the dawn of the new century.

The Cleveland Browns had a great special teams, according to the rankings. They were No. 3 and they didn’t make the playoffs. The Oakland Raiders were No. 5. and they were terrible overall. In all, seven of the NFL’s top 10 special teams units spent the postseason in front of their TVs watching teams with poor special teams compete for a Super Bowl berth.

Interesting statistical analysis of high school star rankings for recruiting and college players getting invitations to the NFL Combine. For those who don’t want to read the article or the sections I’m posting below, 5-star recruits have slightly less than a 50% chance, 4-star recruits have a 25% chance, 3-star players have a 15.5% chance, and 2-star players have a 5.5% chance of being invited to the Combine.

The NFL invited 330 players to the 2009 Combine. 13 of them were 5-star recruits, from any of the 2004 (RS senior Bomar) thru 2006 (early entrants like Matt Stafford) classes. Over the last three years, 51 of the players at the Combine were 5-star recruits. Given that only about 30 – 35 players per year are rated as 5-stars, you can conclude that a 5-star recruit has a 50% chance of being invited to the Combine in the next few years. The 2009 Combine is inviting 66 players who were 4-star recruits. That represents about 25% of all 4-star recruits in a given year.

After three years of reviewing this data, I’m coming to the opinion that the recruiting services really don’t do as good of a job in differentiating between 2-star and 3-star talent. Here’s why- in 2004, Rivals rated 33 recruits as 5-stars, 239 as 4-stars, 1725 as 2-stars, and the rest were either 1-star (rare) or unranked. Of that class, 14 of the 5-stars were invited to a combine from 2006 – 2009 (42.4%), 60 of the 4-stars were invited (25.1%), 94 of the 3-stars were invited (15.5%), 94 of the 2-stars (5.45%), and 45 unranked recruits ended up at a combine. Yes, a smaller percentage of 2-stars make it to the NFL Combine than 3-stars. Given the numbers involved, shouldn’t the difference be larger if the rankers really knew what they were doing? Should the 45 unranked players really be that anonymous after high school? After all, those 45 guys (granted- about a fifth were kickers) had real NFL potential.

It seems clear to me that the data supports the idea that you want a bunch of 5-stars and 4-stars in your class. Some will point out that 50% of 5-stars and 75% of 4-stars wash out or have mediocre careers. I counter that by pointing out that 85% of 3-stars and 95% of 2-stars wash out or have mediocre careers.

  315. Garret February 13, 2009 6:40 pm

Fans of major BCS programs should never fret when their school signs a 2-star recruit. A review of the data reveals that although a 2-star recruit has less chance than a 3-star recruit of becoming elite, the 2-star recruits from the major programs do about as well as the 3-stars, percentage-wise. I think the thing to remember here is that a major program never offers a 2-star because they ran out of 3-stars to recruit. Rather, they offer the 2-star in lieu of score of 3-stars they could sign.

  316. Garret February 13, 2009 6:41 pm

Interesting that QB and WR are the positions that the scouting services evaluate the worst.

Are there any positions which seem to be scouted worse? Yes. The two positions where an unranked player has the best chance of making it to the Combine are QB and WR. Over the last three years, 11 out of 61 QBs and 25 out of 147 WRs were not ranked as even 2-star prospects out of high school. The positions where the rankings matter the most? RB (5 unranked prospects out of 92 at the Combine the last three years) and DL (10 out of 154). OL is close (13 out of 158), but five of those 13 unranked OL prospects were guys from schools in the northwest who graduated high school seven years ago. The vast majority of the unranked guys who make it use redshirt seasons in their collegiate careers. The typical low-ranked NFL prospect is a WR that went to a non-power program, redshirted, and started three or four years.

    baseball broadcast-k5

since baseball was talked a lot today

does any one else like the k5 broadcast with jim and pal?

I do. the color, analyst and commentary, tidbits and baseball trivial make

    watching really entertaining

in fact when i watch the baseball broadcast i learn a lot

pal’s knowledge is tops, especially when he can tell you the scouting

report of any rainbow and opposing players

    i really enjoy watching them

nationally- I like joe morgan of espn

similar to how pal does analyst, both Pal and Joe can critique the players at

bat and can tell the viewers what the player is doing wrong

and usually they, pal and joe, can see a flaw and point it out to the viewers

which i think is educational–not like i’m going to run off to the park and hit a

few…just a appreciation of how some broadcasters make you feel like your

part of the game and I get a sense of feeling youthful again. (i don’t get this feeling watching any other sport)

    …and

in my day, never did listen to the coaches-“don’t swing for the fences” …pppfftt.. I would look back at them as I walked to the batters box…and of course I’d take the three hardest swings, wildly, of course

on the topic of the biggest bouncers I’ve ever seen

had to have been the ones that worked a second floor back room above

wo fats down on hotel str.-now they were huge

This parent gives good advice to parents of high school athletes who are looking for athletic scholarships. I think the whole article is worth a read, but I’ll put a little bit of the article below.

As we’ve fielded congratulations on our son’s behalf, similar sentiments as those felt by that dad last year have been expressed, though not quite as crudely. We’ve heard comments from parents disappointed in what their sons’ coaches “failed to do” for their sons. What unrealistic expectations!

I am grateful that my son’s coaches were there to support him physically, athletically and morally, all of which contributed to his character and level of play that earned him serious interest from a half-dozen colleges (D-II and Ivy League). But I never expected them to act as his agent and devote their time and energy to promoting him to college coaches. They had 52 seniors on their roster. No, that was my job as his father and as one of the two people who knows him best, along with Mom, of course.

  333. whitey February 13, 2009 8:55 pm

what is more interesting about this is that JD or MKK did not release this, but it came directly from the chancellor’s office, bypassing JD. be interesting to see if this “directive” goes further into the women’s program and administration.

  334. Stephen Tsai February 13, 2009 8:56 pm

Dallas Bolla is not with the team, according to a spokesman. She’s out recruiting.

  335. Garret February 13, 2009 8:58 pm

Texas is switching their stadium from a grass field to FieldTurf. The cost is relevant to UH because Aloha Stadium’s surface will need to be replaced not too long from now.

Texas has selected FieldTurf as the replacement for the grass surface at Royal-Memorial Stadium, the school announced this afternoon.

The project will cost approximately $400,000 and will be part of the $27
million south end zone project that will eventually increase capacity at
Texas home games to more than 100,000.

Texas had played on natural grass from 1996 through last season. The Longhorns will become the fifth Big 12 school to install FieldTurf, joining Nebraska, Kansas State, Missouri and Texas Tech. Kansas and Texas A&M have FieldTurf at their practice facilities.

  336. Jason February 13, 2009 8:59 pm

The thing that I’m wondering about is (1) the team is on the road, so I wonder if something happened up there; and (2) why the Chancellor’s office, and not the athletic department.

First and foremost, of course, I hope it’s not his health. I’m not a big Bolla fan, but I don’t wish ill health on anyone.

  337. whitey February 13, 2009 8:59 pm

like i said from last year, this chancellor is one tough young lady and is a very strong supporter of anything UH does, academics or athletics. She would be a great replacement for outgoing UH president.

  338. Garret February 13, 2009 8:59 pm

Another article about the FieldTurf chose.

Texas picked the Canada-based firm over Tiger Turf and Hellas. The company has installed turf in stadiums of 39 of the 119 Division I-A football programs. FieldTurf, which began in 1987, has installed its rubber and sand-based surface in the stadiums of four Big 12 schools, as well as in 10 of 31 NFL stadiums.

According to the last NFL Players Association survey of the league’s players, FieldTurf had four of the top 10-rated playing surfaces in the NFL, at Indianapolis, Seattle, Atlanta and Detroit.

The field will cost $400,000 and comes with an eight-year warranty.

  339. el guapo February 13, 2009 9:02 pm

The article says that JD referred comment to Takayama, which means it’s sensitive and he doesn’t want to or is not allowed to talk about it.

Also says that Mrs. Bolla is on a recruiting trip (whatever that means)

  340. Garret February 13, 2009 9:03 pm

If assistant coaches are normally on year-to-year contracts, I wonder if someone would have let Coach Bolla know that a certain assistant that he was married to wouldn’t have her contract renewed? That could cause a chain effect of actions. That is probably just something in my imagination…

  341. Garret February 13, 2009 9:06 pm

Joe Montana’s son will be a *very* high-profile QB recruit from the 2010 class. His first visit is to Ohio State–but doesn’t Pryor have that job locked up for the next 3 years? His next trip is to Texas–Colt McCoy won’t be around after next season. But Texas doesn’t recruit 5-star out-of-state recruits very well…

The Buckeyes already have offered the senior-to-be a scholarship to be part of the 2010 recruiting class, as have LSU, South Carolina, Stanford and California, to name a few. Texas, Alabama and Tennessee are said to be leaning toward an offer.

Montana, 6 feet 3 and 190 pounds, led Oaks Christian to a 14-0 record and a 2008 state title in his first season as the starter after he transferred from Concord De La Salle. He threw 33 touchdown passes and just seven interceptions last season, and he barely played in the second half of nine of the games because of blowouts.

With a week off from school, he is going to visit Texas after Ohio State, and he would like to work in a visit to Alabama and Tennessee because he expects to make his decision before the upcoming season.

His older brother, Nate, last year walked on at Notre Dame, where their father starred before moving on to the San Francisco 49ers. Nick has shown a preference to go elsewhere.

  349. Garret February 13, 2009 9:21 pm

Remember the A-11 offense that was discussed on this blog during the past season and got so much publicity around the country? Well, it was just declared illegal.

The A-11 offense, the super-sized spread that made it possible for 11 players to be eligible to receive a pass on every down, was virtually shut down Friday for those schools who play by the rules of the National Federation of State High School Associations.

The NFHS changed the rule and said that on first, second and third down, there must be four players on the line with numbers 50-79. The snapper may have a number 1-49 or 80-89, but he is ineligible.

In essence, there can only be potentially six eligible receivers per down instead of 11 under the A-11.

“It was unethical for them to use a loophole in the rules to run this offense,” said Mike Webb, the supervisor of football officials for the West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission who is on the NFHS football rules committee. “This takes away the deception.”

  377. TOM February 13, 2009 10:59 pm

    WHITEY:

She would be a great replacement for outgoing UH president.

I think so too! Chancellor Hinshaw is one impressive lady and has great sense of public relations which is to her credit.

  378. Jason February 13, 2009 11:03 pm

I would love Dr. Hinshaw as UH President, but she’s doing so much good for UH-Mānoa, I wouldn’t want to give her up. I’m hoping we can get someone good, though. Dr. McClain was a poor selection from the start.

  379. whitey February 13, 2009 11:07 pm

somehow get the feeling that the chancellor reads this blog daily.

got one babooze story I heard today.

man in texas is summoned by judge for mistreating illegal immigrants from mexico. they cut his fences, enter US, steal stuff from his farm and trash his land. this man gathers about 10 guys who capture about 30+ illegals and turn them over to boarder patrol. the immigrants then file a law suit claiming they were unfairly mistreated by the farmer. they are seeking damages for around 10 million $.

the farmer complained before about illegal’s but nothing done.

About the UH athlete, Davis, arrested and suspended

In the other paper’s police beat (police/fire) gives a detailed summary of what happened

    about woman’s basketball coach, bolla

I couldn’t find any details if he coached in the Latech game friday

this info would tell a lot

if he coached in that game then a lot of scenarios would play out

    if he didn’t coach,

then you can add to the list of reasons why a coach would be on leave

as mentioned it could be for health reason

or it could also be for bereavement

  453. Ralph February 14, 2009 3:49 am

E bolla did not coach or travel with the wbb team to la tech…

Bighilo beeg news regarding E Bolla and you been absent from the scene…wassamatta you…:)

  454. Ralph February 14, 2009 4:13 am

E bolla’s wife is out recruiting so it can’t be bereavement….

  455. Ralph February 14, 2009 4:16 am

it’s after 4 am and big hilo is sleeping…don’t you smell the coffee brewing, aren’t your ears twitching with the news that e bolla is on indefinite leave, are you having your senior moments and just can’t remember to get up like you usually do….

  456. Ralph February 14, 2009 4:17 am

  457. roysan16 February 14, 2009 4:18 am

    from a ruston, La paper

    before the latech-hawaii game friday

It will mark the debut of Weatherspoon as interim head coach, a role she was chosen for Monday afternoon after Athletic Director Derek Dooley announced the termination of duties for Chris Long.

apparently the latech coach was fired monday.. the former Latech coaches record this year was 12-11overall and 5-4 in conf.

  458. Garret February 14, 2009 5:43 am

Lane Kiffin knows better than to mention a recruit by name who his team is actively recruiting. It is hard for me to believe how many of these minor recruiting violations he’s been committing recently! The questioner specifically mentioned that coaches couldn’t talk about individual players and Kiffin mentioned the recruit’s name in his answer!

During a radio interview Friday morning, UT coach Lane Kiffin ran afoul of an NCAA rule when he mentioned recruit Bryce Brown by name and called the highly recruited running back “a great player.”

Kiffin’s comment came in response to a question — during which it was noted that coaches can’t talk about individual players — about the recent trend of players waiting to sign a letter of intent until well after National Signing Day.

  459. Garret February 14, 2009 5:45 am

    roysan16,

Why would people need to read a different paper to get the details of what happened with Davis?

If these allegations against Davis are true then good riddance and hopefully the young man will have learned a lesson and can adjust his attitude going forward.
Furthermore, hopefully his example and its consequences will serve some good as it is noted by other young men on the team (and in the general population).
