Back in session

UH’s spring semester started today. Waylon Lolotai, who signed a few years ago and then went on a church mission, is enrolled at UH this semester.
He will compete at linebacker in spring practice.

* * *

Add Oregon, Oregon State, California, Arizona and Arizona State now pursuing UH recruit Iuta Tepa. Those schools join UCLA and Washington in trying to poach Tepa, who gave a verbal commitment to UH a few months ago.

The Corey Nielsen chat will be have to be reformatted.
Instead of a live chat, pleases submit questions. I’ll pick 10, give them to him, then I’ll post his answers.
Apparently NCAA rules don’t allow “boosters” to have direct contact with players who have yet to sign letters of intent.
According to the NCAA rules, you are considered to be a booster if:
• You have ever participated in UH athletics (Pride, Vili Nauhi, Stephen Gonzales, RainbowCliff, David Hallums, Colt Brennan, Davone Bess, etc.)
• You have made financial contributions to the athletic programs (anyone who has ever met Stretch, Rich2176, Kinda Shy, etc.)
• You have been asked by athletic department staff to assist in recruiting (Doris, etc.)
• You have assisted or are providing benefits (e. summer jobs or occasional family meals) to enrolled Student Athletes.
5 .You have otherwise been involved in promoting UH athletics in any way.
Since just about everybody fits that description, it will be better to wait until after signing date for a live chat. So we’ll go with the 10-question format for today.

Fred Kalilimoku, my classmate at Papakolea Tech (a.k.a Roosevelt High), threw a grad party for his son, Brad, the former UH linebacker. Here’s a pic of Brad and defensive tackle Rocky Savaiigaea:

However, there is a loophole. So we’re trying to get Billy Ray Stutzmann to chat tomorrow. He hasn’t signed, but he’s enrolled in school, which makes him OK to chat.

  16. Da Punchbowl Kid January 12, 2009 8:37 am

    Duffer,

I think that all of us here have enough Warrior fever that we’re all “infected”.

    “I’m a booster, she’s a booster, he’s a booster, they’re a booster wouldn’t you like to be a booster too!”

  17. Da Punchbowl Kid January 12, 2009 8:41 am

It feels so good not to have to sneak around about it any more. I was afraid that I was gonna have to post as “Not a Booster” in order to ask a question. 😆

  18. kaimiloa January 12, 2009 8:42 am

    Top 20.

So, since I was an athlete at UH, I can’t talk to recruits? Even if they might be family? At what point does a a person become a recruit? When they’ve received an offer? What if a student with no contact with UH asks me about the school/program?

  19. jojo ® January 12, 2009 8:42 am

  22. addahknowjoe January 12, 2009 8:44 am

For now, how ’bout we chat with current players (in coming seniors) and get their take on this past year and the upcoming season instead.

We can wait till after LOI to chat with recruits.

Sounds like we’re dancing and hopping around a bonfire right now.

  23. labrat January 12, 2009 8:45 am

Is Bily Ray in school on a scholie? Or is he paying his own way.

    One wasn’t offered.
And the Long Beach Poly guys already committed (although they’re getting pressed).

  26. Stephen Tsai January 12, 2009 8:53 am

  29. Stephen Tsai January 12, 2009 8:56 am

    Kaimiloa:
Actually, it’s a pretty strange situation.
For instance, if you’re Joe Squat and your brother Jack Squat verbals to UH, Joe Squat can’t be quoted talking about Jack Squat. When it comes to recruiting, Joe doesn’t know Jack. Or Squat.

  30. Stephen Tsai January 12, 2009 8:57 am

Billy Ray must have had some really good guidance. I think he still had to go thru clearing house and get NCAA amateur status check before he enrolled in school. He must have been working on this early in hs. It may be a good question to ask him.

  38. Stephen Tsai January 12, 2009 9:15 am

I think if he’s enrolled, he doesn’t need to sign an LOI. But I also think this means that if he transfers, he can’t play in the fall.

  39. Stretch January 12, 2009 9:15 am

I think that jojo NEEDS a booster to eat her meals.

  45. bstunna2002 January 12, 2009 9:29 am

I hope the Team Leaders are taking next season seriously. Hopefully they’re in the weight room and getting their conditioning done setting an example for incoming recruits like Stutz2. I think the one thing that seperates us from big time colleges or even a team like Boise St is our off season conditioning program. Our players need to make a commitment and realize that football is a 12 month sport the leaders of this team need to hold everyone accountable and get everyone into the weight room and out on the field for conditioning they’re college athletes so they don’t need to have coaches telling them what drills to do come on guys let’s get ready for ’09 “Preparation+Hardwork=SUCCESS! Let’s get it on!

Potential Question for QB Nielsen: “Although we know no player wants to redshirt, seeing as how the top 3 slots are already penciled in (and others will have little PT), are you okay with that probability?? Or do you feel you will be given a legitimate shot at stealing one of those coveted slots??

welcome corey. upon watching your film clips i am impressed with your poise in and out of the pocket. i have a two fold query.

what type of offense is it that you were running at gahr high and how does it compare to the current run and shoot at hawaii?

and…..often times the “measurables” are not what we read. so please, in all honesty, do you run a 4.6/40 and just how tall are you?

    mahalo

  65. d1島 January 12, 2009 10:26 am

    Question for Corey Nielsen:

How did you feel you did in adjusting to the difference in the “speed of the game” during the Hawaii vs Mainland All-star game?

  66. Rich2176 January 12, 2009 10:29 am

Duffer – got it….call my office. I emailed you the direct line.

Good Monday to everyone. I’m finally starting to see a little pinhead of light ahead and shouldn’t be MIA as much.

    That’s actually a fourfold query.
1 – What type of offense did you run at Gahr High School?
2 – How does cmpare to the run and shoot that you will be running at Hawaii?
3 – How is your best time so far in the 40 yard dash?
4 – How tall are you? For real now.

Hey I got a great quote to put up in the weight room and locker rooms. ND has “Play like a champion today” we should go one step further ours should read “Prepare Like a Champion Today” this will be a constant reminder to our athletes that hard work and dedication pays off in the Long run.

  71. LizKauai (iPhone) January 12, 2009 10:43 am

Rich2176- re #66- will you take my picture too??? Glad you are having fun 🙂

  72. Pride. January 12, 2009 10:48 am

    Stretch, he’s excused.

  73. Garret January 12, 2009 10:49 am

I really hesitated posting yesterday about how the chat was dangerous, as I saw how many people were interested in chatting with a recruit. Plus, two people said that they thought Corey was already at UH. I’m glad that I and others spoke up and that ST changed to this “approved question” format.

Frankly, there are so many current Warriors to choose from that I’d love to chat with them instead of any recruit before NLI day. I’d love to hear the answers to A-Joe’s question on who they think is working out the hardest now and who they think will be the biggest surprised next year.

Billy Ray is an excellent choice because he’s already at UH, so he can give the info on the offseason workouts for UH and on the recruiting process.

  74. Garret January 12, 2009 10:53 am

There is often a domino effect in recruiting. For example, USC and Texas are the finalists for Devon Kennard, the #6 recruit in the country, the #1 DE in the country. Kennard said that he was going to announce his decision soon.

Why is this relevant to UH? If Kennard chooses Texas, USC will have a scholarship available for a DE…and they have had a long history with Long Beach Poly players and I’ve read that they would have Tepa high (if not at the top) of their list if they lost Kennard. USC would be a bigger problem (in my opinion) than all of the other suitors combined for Tepa.

Thankfully, I think that Kennard will pick USC. USC’s choice of new DL coach was the final clincher I believe.

  75. Pride. January 12, 2009 10:53 am

I like what Alika Smith said on the Leahey’s morning radio show.

“I wasn’t tall, I wasn’t fast, and I wasn’t a good athlete. But I excelled because I had the heart of a champion. with the heart of a champion you can do anything or beat anybody.”

That’s the right attitude and spirit.

  76. Garret January 12, 2009 10:59 am

    A-House and pride,

I agree with you about playing the best teams possible, but that quote from JD in Ferd’s article sure doesn’t seem like JD thinks the same way. Maybe JD meant that instead of playing teams like Florida on the road (especially without a return game in Hawaii), it would be better to schedule home-and-home deals with Oregon State, BYU, Washington, and Washington State for now.

Many of the biggest schools like Florida and Georgia don’t offer a home-and-home deal because they can make $5 mil in a home game and they pay a Sun Belt school $1 mil to buy home games. Playing teams like that on the road *without* a return home and doesn’t make sense. Normally, teams that do that are just looking for a payday…but the increased travel costs from Hawaii take that motivation away also.

  77. al™ January 12, 2009 11:07 am

  78. al™ January 12, 2009 11:10 am

alika smith was being modest as he always has been.

    he was a great athlete.
had he chosen baseball he would have made all state as a pitcher/first baseman and would have college offers. pro scouts even had him work out for them and would have drafted him had he competed in hs.

the football team kept bugging him to be there quarterback.

    true story.

  79. LizKauai (iPhone) January 12, 2009 11:10 am

ST- thanks for the party pix! Any anecdotes from the event that you can share?

Re playing UH at home- I hope one of the things that happens soon is that the Warriors are unbeatable at home. Then one of the “fun” challenges to lure tough competition will be to see if they can be the first to upset the Warriors in THEIR HOUSE!

  80. al™ January 12, 2009 11:12 am

  85. Pride. January 12, 2009 11:23 am

I still say that Chad Owens is every bit as good as Wes Welker. Chad was never given a real chance to show his stuff. Of course, perhaps the Jags never got over Chad turning down the request by them for him to play in Europe. They might have had “hurt “feelinegs over that decision.

  86. Stretch January 12, 2009 11:25 am

Pride – I don’t think it helped with the fumbled punt returns, that was the begining of the end for him. I think he was trying toooooo hard to do well. He has the ability to play the game, no need over do it.

  87. Pride. January 12, 2009 11:29 am

I think going to Europe would have been a great help. NFL doesn’t give that big of a window. They give you a chance and then it’s gone, with a new crop of kids coming in.

  88. al™ January 12, 2009 11:29 am

i agree mr. pride. and so is davone bess.

i’d like to pick your brains. i have a question for you.

who else in recent times do you think didn’t get a real opportunity?
what about some of this year’s seniors, who in your eyes has the potential to make a pro squad?

  89. al™ January 12, 2009 11:31 am

stretch….you should go hookup with ahouse’s bro. he knows where to fish in the area that you are currently assuring quality control.

When will the questions be answered by Corey Nielson??

  91. J-Dog January 12, 2009 12:00 pm

From the 2007 season, I’d say Mike Lafaele and RGM. Although RGM is still keeping the dream alive in the CFL.

  92. Irse January 12, 2009 12:04 pm

I believe the rule is that if you are a booster, you can’t have direct contact until they are in school. So even if Corey signs a LOI, he can’t have any direct contact until he gets here in the fall. That is why Stutz can have a live chat. Of course I may be wrong.

  93. A-House January 12, 2009 12:15 pm

    Pride:

    post #75 – Alika Smith – ” I had the heart of a champion”.

Perhaps, UHAD can take this statement and post it all over the lower campus buildings, with Alika’s permission, of course.

Such a simple statement that conveys so much strength and encouragement to all athletes.

  94. d1島 January 12, 2009 12:45 pm

    Where’d erryboddy go?

  95. A-House January 12, 2009 12:47 pm

    Garret:

I read the remarks attributed to Jim D and somehow, with my poor command of the English language, felt it was poorly worded as written in Ferd’s column; just dis-jointed as tho’ parts were taken from several sentences and made into new one(s).

There is much merit to not playing the Floridas and Gerogias except with a “home-n-home” series, but just the experience of playing that caliber of teams must surely carry some meaning for the athlete and coaches. It may propel returning players to train harder in off-season work out or cause the coaches to seek more talented athletes to raise the status of their programs or, as roysan16 pointed out yesterday, make some of Hawaii’s younger athletes, stop, think, and light that fire which will burn to make Hawaii the best.

I always garnered a lot of pride on the accomplishments of the All-Hawaii Company that entered the Army in June of years past. Each time, the new recruits would make it their individual pledge to best the records of previous companies. And, each soldier would not let others in their group fall and cause them embrassment. They would carry those who could not make the 20-mile hike, with full combat pack, in the hills surrounding Salinas, CA. We did the same for the Hawaii guys who went in with me.

    A-House

There is much merit to not playing the Floridas and Gerogias except with a “home-n-home” series, but just the experience of playing that caliber of teams must surely carry some meaning for the athlete and coaches. It may propel returning players to train harder in off-season work out or cause the coaches to seek more talented athletes to raise the status of their programs or

I agree and we shall see if UF game did light the fire or not with our returning player.
Coach Mac and others are getting more talented players but our coaches still need to get them to play as a team and reduce or cut out those personal penalties esp. our OL veterans.

OK, maybe I going open myself up for some “friendly” fire here but with regard to seeking out the big-name OOC opponents:
How about trying to win the conference with a little more regularity than once per decade first?

“Anyone. Anywhere. Anytime.” is what Pat Hill has been preaching for several years now and while it initially created a buzz in the “Valley”, his inability to bring home a conference crown with any kind of consistency has hurt his popularity and kind brought ridicule to Fresno’s program.

    – WAC Champ
    – Bowl eligible
    – Graduate all Seniors

When I go east the jet lag is horrible, can’t imagine traveling and then having to play football against a top team.

    Question for Corey Nielsen

    Corey,

First of all, welcome to your “home away from home”. You have made it clear that you have followed the Warrior Football program over the past few years and obviously the 2008 season.

No doubt, the quarterback is a key component in our offense and I’d like to think more so than any other offense.

My question is, did you see the offensive struggles of 2008 as a motivation to come to UH better than you have ever been to take hold of our Run and Shoot OR did you see this more of a challenge to overcome as you have seen players struggle to work together as a unit to make the offense successful?

    Mahalo,
    Kazz

  125. (Jesse) James January 12, 2009 2:13 pm

    Kazz…awesome question.

  126. A-House January 12, 2009 2:16 pm

    d1:

“INCOMING” – 155s, 402s, 8″ – for those not familiar with military numbers, they relate to artillery and heavy motar fire plus low flying aircraft dropping bombs including naplam. Listen for the sound, if at first you hear them and then you don’t hear them, bend over and kiss your ass good bye! Because it’s coming into your position.

Much like Germany’s V-Bombs going into the British Isles in WWII. If you her them going overhead, it’s OK. If the noise stops, aloha noh!

Nah, d1, you have a valid point of winning the WAC consistently. However, it does no harm when you dream of bigger things to come. Take Oklahoma, they have lost 5 consecutive BCS games and the HC head may be on the line. When was the last time they won the Big 12. They lost to Texas in 2008, but played in the championship game because the computer numbers said so!! Maybe, that’s the reason that Coach Mack Brown got out of playing Hawaii 3 or 4 years ago; it would bring their numbers down. However, just imagine if they had lost!!!

I’d love to see Coach Mack add a 4th goal to his list and that would be “consistently in the top 20 teams in the country. Hope in my life time!!!

I believe Macks thinking is if the 3 team goals are ‘mission accomplished’ (no pun intented) each year, your 4th suggested team goal will come if not in top 20 then in top 25.

  130. d1島 January 12, 2009 2:34 pm

Wasn’t “consistently Top 25” one of the Former Coach’s goals?

  131. el guapo January 12, 2009 2:35 pm

USC’s non-conference schedule since 2002, against schools other than WAC, MWC, Big 10, Big 12, and Notre Dame (includes bowl games)

    2002 – hosted Auburn
    2003 – at Auburn
    2004 – at VA Tech
    2005 – Arkansas
    2006 – at Arkansas
    2008 – at Virginia

There are plenty of schools in the West, Rockies, MidWest, and Texas to prove yourself against without the travel costs and travel exhaustion of going farther east. Ruston LA is far east enough. No need to play SEC, ACC, or Big East unless they’re willing to come here for one game only, with no return (isn’t that the reason for the 13th game?)

Depends on what you need or want to do with the washer. If simple house washing, a 1500 psi should do nicely for a single story but if you got height to deal with then maybe something with a little more reach is in order.
If washing sidewalks or asphalt becareful not to make little pukas. The washer can put out a mean jet stream and make little pukas in the concrete or asphalt.
I like to use it as a “yard rake” when I got lots of leaves to sweep. Set it on fan and use it like a rake.
    Anyhoo, have fun with it….

my take is this, if your a good parents it doesn’t matter where your kids go to school they should already be well versed in the basic fundamentals which develops a strong sense of moral and spiritual values. this should include respect, responsibility, compassion, commitment and humility in their character. many times student with problems come from homes which parents sherk their duties of teaching their children social accountability. more often they then blames others because their children gets into trouble. school was made to be an educational institution and not a social agency. I refuse to let adults dismiss their parental duties for their own children.

  227. Kekoa January 12, 2009 5:20 pm

    Question1 for Corey Nielson:

    1. Your numbers speak louder then words in all the important categories. What I want to know is, “do you feel like you command the team?” By that I mean, do they follow your lead in every situation?

    2. Do you see yourself as a team leader, or one that just does exactly what the coaches want and nothing more?

    3. How many TD drives have you felt like you ‘willed’ the team all the way there with pure drive and determination, and how did they respond to that kind of hurry-up offense.

    4. Do you take care of your O-line off the field, and conversely, do you feel like they protect you adequately on the field? Do you feel confident that you can take charge of Senior lineman in college?

    5. What do you see yourself doing 8 years from now?

  228. Kekoa January 12, 2009 5:22 pm

Should read “Questions for Corey Nielson”

    mahalo Pride for the kokua,

Marc Sanborn has a hefty ‘appearance fee’, he has some great books out that are a ‘must read’ if you want to read something good besides the good book.

hope all is well. the beast is back at Weber State, survived the 1st semester with 2 A’s and 3 B’s, needs to keep the GPA up so he has a shot at Academic All American. interesting note, Wyoming will be in town recruiting ‘hard’, they’ll be on Oahu for 3 days then out to the outer islands. they got one kid from kaimuki, and are looking at a few others to sign up.

ST, did you hear anything about UW, they’re pounding the pavement pretty hard going after anything that moves…..LOI day cannot come here quick enough.

    GO WARRIORS

Turns out it was Peaches’ family and Mei Ling and family (including Russ & Pam & mom). They sounded good. It was a slow night in the main lounge too…and Tina opened our door so they could hear us out there. 😯 Since my cuz was sitting out there with old customers, I assume that was a good sign … 😆

Too bad Russ & Pam won’t be able to make our big Karaoke Call. But will try for a few more weekend appearances and las vegas’s karaoke call…

    ***Off Topic***

The topic of Under Armour’s cleats in terms of being the right “fit” for our players came into question through out the 2008 season especially for our HBs.

This has nothing to do with it, probably, but I have two pairs of UA Prototype shoes. One is the first I bought which were the Prototype Evade.

Come to find out later that they were “SPECIFICALLY” meant for those that needed to train their feet/legs on a side to side (lateral) basis.

I used these shoes for the gym and some work outs on an eliptical and also wore them at all home games this season. The muddy grass and the broken asphalt near the tailgate site took a toll on them. They are still good, but not as “spick and span” as usual.

So then I bought the Prototype Power shoes recently. I can tell you one thing they are NOT good for is for extended running use. The sides of my feet hurt so damn bad it was’t funny. This was after 20 minutes on a treadmill.

Long story short. Under Armour has a LONG way to go when it comes to shoes. It seems they have made each shoe for different purposes. They do have a “LINEAR” training shoe for running, but I won’t spend another 69.00 for a 3rd pair when I was looking for one shoe to fit all needs.

How this relates to the problems some players have said about their cleats, I am not surprised.

I used to go to the gym 4 days a week to just lift and then some light cardio at the end. I’ll try change it to 4 days a week of lifting and then just one day of nothing but cardio for 1.5 hours, but I will have to remember to bring the “right” shoes for the right purposes now.

    Lesson learned.

QUESTION FOR ANYONE GOING TO MANOA BOOKSTORE ANYTIME SOON.

Can you let me know if they have the Official Wilson GST Game Footballs with the etched UH “H” logo for sale near the logo merchandise?

They sold the Nike 3005 Game Balls with the UH “H” on them last season and I thought they’d do that again this season.

I saw they gave one of these away during a Call The Coach Show two months ago. They are the Wilson brand full sized offical college regulation game footballs. They are distinctive with black laces instead of white ones and the ball’s leather is a light brown color. They would be 60.00 or higher. These are NOT the mini or regular sized green UH logo footballs that sell in the basket for 15-30 dollars.

E-mail – tsaikotailgate (at) gmail (dot) com .

I still can’t believe that Koakane is the example for our future leaders. We are in a lot of trouble.

C’mon Pride, you don’t really mean that! I know your just teasing! Yet we need caring guys like Koakane to guide our keiki as they navigate the public school system as flawed as it is.

His retirement is a great loss to the community as I see a man who has devoted a lot of time and effort to his youngsters both in the classroom and on the athletic field.

Besides, who are the kids going to turn to for proper
Hawaiian to English translation? Just the other day he gave us an example of how he had the boys organize teams for a game of basketball.

He told the 1st 5 kids…”Eh you guys goin’ be ‘Skins’ so HEMO your shirt!” A very puzzled look wrinkled their faces. He then explained the definition of ‘Hemo.’ Thus a little of the Hawaiian vernacular was preserved.

Seriously tho – he participates in a lot of counseling session with parents and gives a lot of his own time to them. Are we all as dedicated to our jobs as he is?

We can attend delicious CC luncheons…he gotta eat school lunch! We can attend VB & BB games at 7PM, he’s still in counsel with the parents of his problem children.

Past weekend, Vandals broke into the school…he answers the call…I could go on, but I think you get the point. Ok…ok…his keyboard get different kind letters on the home row than yours, big deal!…Hahahaha.

  237. Jason January 12, 2009 6:09 pm

Kazz: I would check it out for you, but I ain’t going into the zoo that is the UHM Bookstore any time this week, as people start to buy their books. Maybe next week, if nobody responds to you by then.

  241. Committed Road Warrior January 12, 2009 6:16 pm

Jason, if the UPS guy doesn’t show up in the next hour or so, safe to say you probably won’t get your books today…..maybe tomorrow.

Does the UPS tracking still say “Out for Delivery”?

  242. Jason January 12, 2009 6:20 pm

Kazz: You’d be no different than the Japanese tourists who are always there. 😀

CRW: They deliver until 7 PM, supposedly. Normally, they hit the Salt Lake area around 5, 6 PM. I’m just impatient. 😛

  243. jm2375 January 12, 2009 6:24 pm

So, Jason, did your senioritis start back, say, maybe in mid-May, sometime? 😀

  244. Kazz January 12, 2009 6:25 pm

    Agreed with UPS…

If it says “out for delivery” you’ll get it that day.

  245. Committed Road Warrior January 12, 2009 6:26 pm

Jason—I guess choke overtime for the drivers hitting your area around 6pm or so.

Funny how UPS offers “Ground” service to/from Hawai’i when the “Ground” packages get loaded into the same air cans as the NDAs, 2DAs, and 3DSs bound for California (or Hawai’i)…..but I digress.

  246. Ralph January 12, 2009 6:44 pm

Kelli is taking 36 credits this year, senior year…Kelli did you snooze during your freshman and sophomore years, this year should be light in credits not catch up time….

  247. wafan January 12, 2009 7:05 pm

    36?

I feel dumb. I averaged 33 per quarter at the school that just dropped their football program. I was a teaching assistant for a prof from Kanehoe so I had my own set of keys and permission to get in and do my labs at 2 in the morning. No distractions from silly underclassmen. Ugh, the little cretins.

I did not have a life even back then. Hmmmm. A pattern? HELP!

  248. Ralph January 12, 2009 7:09 pm

Wafan 33 credits per quarter, about 99 credits a year…..dang you’re good….come on Kelli and Jason, you got to keep up with this old timer

  249. wafan January 12, 2009 7:15 pm

    Koakane . . .

Remember ITIP? It is making a come back. That generation of teachers since we learned it way back when and now just rediscovered it, renamed it and are making a ton of money from it.

You might have an employment opportunity doing workshops in Hawai’i and as a consultant. All those teachers who have been teaching less than 20 years or so will be lost.

If you want a partner let me know!

  250. brew808 January 12, 2009 7:19 pm

Congratulations to two new defensive coaches for the Niners with 808 ties –

  252. wafan January 12, 2009 7:21 pm

    Ralph . . .

No. I just do not need much sleep about 4 hours per night is good for me. And, in the olden days anything more than 18 credits was free. So, with little money for tuition I had to get out of there quickly. Being good had nothing to do with it. It was necessity.

The last school district did not believe I earned my MEd in two summers. They would not accept the first transcript without a phone call from the OSU registrar verifying the degree. Silly, yeah? I enjoyed the course work and challenges. Besides what else is there to do at Corvallis during the summer?

Dang. Way past my bed time. This movie “October Sky” is so good. Must be the fourth or fifth time I have watched it.

  258. bighilofan2 January 12, 2009 7:48 pm

I say to get the best of the best to stay home right out of high school, no children or true love, you most likely have to have a divine mission to keep you home. scheduling Eastern Texas, (I not saying anything bad about Eastern Texas, cept i no nomoa East Texas U), but that is not beckoning to the top Hawaii State players that we’re shooting for top tier recognition. you’re not gonna keep a player, who everyone is calling a 5 star, when his and his family’s mindset is that he, and his cousins if any, can do better than UH. know what I mean????

Thats why all of us gotta get over this Central this and that, even though I know we’re gonna get a great game. No matter what, people should not have any reason to have the mindset that we’ll settle with working our way up. fooey on that! make like Mr. Clay, Warriors! Work Hard!!!

  259. jm2375 January 12, 2009 7:53 pm

Big shaka to Nalani. Goal #4 is awesome. We’ve always been able to knock on the door of the recruits rated between #11 thru #20. Getting any combination of #1 thru #10 would be even better.

Our guys at Hawaii over the past several seasons have:

1 – Gotten tryouts in the NFL.
2 – Gone to bowl games on a regular basis.
3 – Played for a top twenty team.
4 – Played in front of their family and friends regularly, helping to make and establish lasting memories for their loved ones.
    5 – Graduated from college.
6 – Played in a BCS bowl game.
7 – Joined a long list of players from generations before them that have contributed in the building of a solid foundation for an up and coming football program, that willl become a nationally recognized powerhouse.
8 – Been able to represent an entire state of supporters.
9 – Become household names among the fans of their own state.
10 – Established themselves as leaders in the community by becoming fine examples for the youth of Hawaii, by pursuing their dreams and education in their own backyard.

No other mainland team can give you those combination of benefits.

    Hiya Liz!

You know I gotta come validate my Visa on Kauai at least once a quarter. This was another family funeral, and so it was a real quick commando style raid over in Kapa’a town.

When I heard that Wessai was getting pounded by rain and wind, I took an earlier flight out after the services.

  280. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER January 12, 2009 10:03 pm

    Hi Kekoa!
Oh- sorry to hear it was a funeral. Gotta do a CC some time when you can stay longer.

  281. d1島 January 12, 2009 10:07 pm

Congratulations to you and your #2 son, LizK!
Tell him to keep it up…getting there is just the means to an end.

  282. Kekoa January 12, 2009 10:07 pm

Liz, Kimana started classes today too. It’s a painful reality that all those stories of the high cost of books are true ($956 bucks – Yikes!) It makes you wonder what ever happened to the concept of using books ordered for, and funded by the old school network.

  283. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER January 12, 2009 10:16 pm

    Kekoa- great, Kimana!
d1- it was largely his own volition that got him this far. Which is further than I got with formal education!

  284. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER January 12, 2009 10:17 pm

ok- I gotta Wii Fit before I fall asleep.

  285. Kekoa January 12, 2009 10:25 pm

Actually, I wish I could ask those same questions in post #227 to all of our QB’s. The true measure of a QB is in his head and heart. The great ones had that combination and used it to the max! Then they inspired those around them to rally forth with them.

Montana was most dangerous when he was in the *zone.* Give him the ball with 1:35 and watch him take his team in for the winning score.

We know that Colt is capable of doing the same thing given the opportunity.

  286. d1島 January 12, 2009 10:43 pm

    G’nite, Liz.

    G’nite, Kekoa.

Taking a look between now and Feb. 4, letter of intent day.

Jan. 12-15 — Dead period (meaning no visits, no in-person contact of any kind).

Jan. 16-17 — Quiet period (meaning coaches can have in-person contact with a player only on campus).

    Jan. 18-Jan 31.—No restrictions.

This is when all the college coaches aka poachers visit the islands. Poachers are looked down upon because they try to steal other team’s recruits/commitments. Some teams that have a mutual respect for Hawaii and have ties to Hawaii I think stay out of our way. I look at Navy, Army,San Jose,Fresno and SMU I think they’ll purposely not pursue any of the recruits that we have. But it remains to be seen what happens. As Bulla said with all the coaches pounding the pavement on the islands-letter of intent day can’t come any sooner. And I agree.

    Feb. 1—Quiet period.

    Feb. 2-5—Dead period.

    Feb. 4—Letter-of-intent signing day.

This is the day that we hope that all of the recruits kept their pledges. And all the coaches hard work comes to fruition. And drama and surprises of the good kind, like a highly touted recruit changing his mind about going to the mainland, would be so welcome.

What garret said in #74 is true because one of the criterias that tepa has been quoted as saying is that he wants to go to a school that he can start right away. and if usc is line to sign the #1 best rated DE in the country it might give tepa reservations of going there if his intentions truly all along were to pick a school that he can start right away.

colorado is another example of a school thats after tepa but instead just picked up a huge addition to their program-a DE

  338. Kekoa January 13, 2009 8:58 am

jm2009 ~ Could you hold the noise down please?

A-Joe ~ A similar scam was run in the banking industry years ago when they arrested a senior teller. She was skimming small amounts from thousands of checking accounts every day. She knew most folks never bother to reconcile their accounts to the penny, so that’s what she ‘banked’ on.

James ~ I’ll be in the Puzzle Palace this afternoon. I’ll stop in to make sure Aunty Linda still has you on the payroll. (Maybe sample some of the bubbly they are saving for opening day).

DPK ~ Good Morning to you sir! I’m looking forward to your being the Grand Marshall of the Punchbowl Holy Ghost Parade this year.

Homey ~ I was impressed with your strong showing at the t-gate this past season. I think you are an EIS inspector in the making! We need to talk about getting you certified.

  339. Addahknowsports© January 13, 2009 9:01 am

    Hi djmitcho!

Was good to meet you at the cc! Too bad didn’t get chance to talk story more. I loved that story about your parents being off your radar when they moved. Will send you link shortly.

  340. LizKauai [Believer] January 13, 2009 9:02 am

    whoosh!

702WarriorNation- while I was on hold to talk to L&L yesterday, there was a commercial on 1500 advertising for an Internet specialist for the station- who would be in charge of their whole Internet marketing program. Needed to be familiar wih Photoshop, etc.
Perhaps a streaming channel may be art of that too- I HOPE!!
I can only catch them while driving into the airport to pick up my boss once a week.

    Whoosh!

  341. Addahknowsports© January 13, 2009 9:06 am

    ‘Morning Kekoa-

I just sent you an email. Hope all is well on the ceded lands.

I agree with your comment in #338 about Homey being a strong show at the T-gates. He really shined at the grill and with his marinating skills. Even though his knife got taken away by Ralph who did a terrific job with it.

  342. jm2375 January 13, 2009 9:11 am

Kekoa/A-joe – what was the name of the movie about skimming pennies from people’s accounts? Starred Jennifer Aniston. Was it Office Space?

Kekoa – are jealous cuz I didn’t leave any cake for you? 😆

  345. al™ January 13, 2009 12:17 pm

    el guapo

nash has had 2 yrs to recruit. given that first year he had little time to recruit although many jc guys were still available. let’s look at the numbers:

    2007 5 frontcourt players
    1 pointguard

    2008 4 frontcourt players
    1 er, shooting guard

going in to the 2007 recruiting season, our glaring weakness was/has been point guard. knowing who was graduating, we knew what the weaknesses would be in the years to follow, point guard and shooting guard. in spite of the transition in 2007, jackson wheeler was still on payroll as the chief recruiting coordinator. you could hang this on him.

2008, why didn’t we bring in 3-4 point guards/shooters? hang this one on nash.

i joke that because he was a frontcourt player and his top asst was one also, that, they become enamored with the big guys and forget who will get them the ball or take the outside shot (w/consistency).

i agree that the flex is great but you need guys who can pop from outside to make that one work. we should employ a short game with 10 footers and cuts to the basket.

  346. Uce2 January 13, 2009 1:22 pm

I say Tepa will go to either UCLA or Oregon.
