Back in business

The Warriors went back to work this morning, with a one-hour team meeting, one-hour weight training, and 16 sprints. The Warriors will have only conditioning drills the next two days. The next practice is Thursday.

Defensive tackle Vaughn Meatoga was on crutches because of a sprained right ankle. He said he expects to play in the Sept. 30 game against Louisiana Tech, but does not know when he will be able to practice again.

A possible solution to the “height” problem in our secondary.

    Spinal Decompression.

  12. LizKauai (WARRIORS- IMUA!) September 21, 2009 3:21 pm

Vaughn’s family member said Vaughn will be fine. Was getting chopped all game while engaging another blocker and no penalties called.

  14. whitey September 21, 2009 3:24 pm

amazing what low blocking by the oline does to the dline.

  15. bstunna2002 September 21, 2009 3:24 pm

The DLine better be ready for chop blocks cause that Navy’s game right there.

  16. whitey September 21, 2009 3:25 pm

wonder if low tackling by the d would have any effect on the o???

  17. whitey September 21, 2009 3:27 pm

unlv uses chop, cut, and leg whips, but got caught only once for leg whip. ouch, ouch, ouch

  18. whitey September 21, 2009 3:30 pm

bstunna, so do we still want to keep tackling high and take all the crap blocks??? or do we stay low like how lthey practice and tackle from the waist down??????

  19. whitey September 21, 2009 3:32 pm

    ithey = warrior’s

  20. Stephen Tsai September 21, 2009 3:35 pm

    Cut blocks are OK.
    The high-low blocks aren’t.
If a player is engaged by a low block, a second player isn’t allowed to hit him high.

  21. jm2375 September 21, 2009 3:37 pm

    Tsai’s alive!! 😆

  22. whitey September 21, 2009 3:37 pm

this week will be truly tough for the warriors, not only school work and rehab, but they will have 2 less players for the traveling squad. this will be tough cause there is no chance of replacing players once they leave on sunday.

  23. lava September 21, 2009 3:38 pm

Re Fonoti, I understood he traveled because there was a chance he might play in the second game, which makes sense, but if he’s not expected to play against La Tech, why would he travel to La Tech? Seems like we could better use the limited travel roster to rotate and keep guys fresh.

  24. madeinhawaii September 21, 2009 3:39 pm

I keep hearing about those chops. Was it that bad?
I’m surprised the announcers weren’t saying anything, either. And the Coaches not protesting more vehemently.

Also.. I swear the announcers were calling Pilares.. Polaris.. most of the time.

i like scott enos’s kicking and he was impressive on fg. the 47 yder was no problem and look for him to hitting some from 60 yds. I thought that the warriors was going for the winning fg at end of the game.

Alex d is hard to judge because he did not have enough chances, but that is a huge plus for the warriors if they are not using him because the warriors are moving the ball.

  28. madeinhawaii September 21, 2009 3:45 pm

    Lava..

Isn’t Fonoti one of the captains? Sort of like a player-coach on this somewhat inexperienced Defense?

  29. whitey September 21, 2009 3:45 pm

mih, your question on chop blocks is good, but if could see the de players at the airport with all their dings, the anwer would be YESHHHH!!

  30. wafan September 21, 2009 3:47 pm

    mih . . .

We had several players wearing the same number.

    Kalani Polaris
    Kailani Polaris
    Koloha Polaris
    Kealoha Polaris
    and
    Kealoha Pilares

This from the same announcer. He must have figured if he kept changing the name he would get it right at least once.

  31. bstunna2002 September 21, 2009 3:47 pm

whitey: I say the d linemen take a step back after the snap and follow the play, try and flush the play to one side then they should be able to tackle how they were taught

  33. whitey September 21, 2009 3:54 pm

bstunna, you get good eyes and intuition. i like your suggestion and in this game, the unlv oline was outmanned. the overcommitment by the dline at the snap probably helped unlv. what impressed me was the speed of the dline chasing the qb who just barely avoided getting tackled.

  34. whitey September 21, 2009 3:57 pm

can you imagine what the announcers would be saying if both satele brothers were playing. brashton, liko, liko, brashton, samson.

  48. jm2375 September 21, 2009 5:05 pm

Chawan – I think I heard that Jovonte went out early in the 1st qtr with an ankle injury.

Liz – I just looked at the box score for the Skins game yesterday. aaarrrrgggghhh. Once again, no Redskin TDs and they lost their starting right guard for the season. So tell me again why they didn’t draft/trade/sign any OLs?

  49. BowsForever September 21, 2009 5:14 pm

Hail to the Suisham – err, Kicker – err, Redskins. Something’s not quite right with the franchise and it’s not just Colt recovering from his injury, that’s for sure. The booing from fans deal reminds me of last year’s Weber State game.

  54. chawan_cut September 21, 2009 5:33 pm

    Woopity wildcat.
who cares. look at what it got the dolphins. 45 mins of time of possession and a loss. run run run. doesn’t do you any good if you only get fg’s and missed fg’s. oh wait, we don’t have a quick enough offense to do a 2 minute drill. and why throw to ginn? he doesn’t have the hands. look at his attempt at that catch. ball in his hands yet nothing.
best defense to keep manning and the colts off the field. but they couldn’t stop they from scoring when they did. doesn’t work against an offense as prolific and proficient as theirs. kinda like when we were in the triple option and got behind and couldn’t pass to get back.
    stupid nfl copycat league.

Not to mention it’s ummm… all over the F”N media guide.

Quotes from Mac’s weekly press conference are up on UH’s website.

    On UNLV’s game-winning touchdown…
I have to give the Rebels quarterback a lot of credit. Also, people ask if we should have double teamed Payne (the receiver who caught the go-ahead touchdown pass). Personally I felt there were three guys we could have double teamed, Wolf being the first. You can always second guess. It would have been a good idea to double team him in that play but if you double team Payne, you got Wolf running around and that’s a tough call.

On UH’s fans in Las Vegas, which accounted for nearly 40% of the crowd…
The fans were great! The fans that were at that game were unbelievable. Their attitude towards everything is unbelievable. We have the best fans in the world. I know they are disappointed in the close loss, but we are too and they were right there with us.

The more and more I keep hearing mainland broadcasters call the football team that, the MORE I BELIEVE this is a slight on the program and the way they perceive not just the football program, but Hawaii in general.

If I was a professional football broadcaster or sports reporter, I’d be a retard not to see what the UH media guide says.

Again, I’m looking at this season’s one and the year before that and before that and so forth…

Yup… I’d be retarded with a learning disorder not to get it right the first time.

  66. Garret September 21, 2009 5:52 pm

The injury to Gallery means that Samson should be starting at center for the Raiders…but this reporter sure doesn’t pass the news along in a nice way.

Gallery’s fractured fibula is a major blow to the offensive line. He has become their best lineman by far. Now, he’s likely out at least a month.

This hurts the offensive line twice as much. For one, it moves starting center Chris Morris to left guard — a position he never played before the Raiders drafted him in 2006, and has done so since only in emergencies.

It also puts Samson Satele back at starting center after Cable benched him late in the preseason. If Satele is going to figure out how to get the line calls right and get physical in the middle, this would be a great time.

I hope the WAC season doesn’t affect the attendance from game to game, especially with NMSU having a down year.

We can hope, but most likely we may only average around 5K (turnstile) per home game.

The “pre-WAC” season has been great and fun this season with two SWEEPS over Stanford and UCLA and an almost come from behind win on CAL. Hard to believe just over 50% of the Wahine volleyball season is pretty much over.

Thinking ahead, I am really going to miss the 2009 senior class. My two favs Stephanie Brandt and Amber Kaufman both brought things to the team that won’t be replaced anytime soon, but the same goes with ALL senior classes for ALL UH programs…

    (sighs…) They grow up so fast… 😉

I tell ya, in short we’d be hard-pressed to find another player that can match Kaufman’s intensity on the court and Brandt has been one of, if not, the most consistent server we’ve had in the past few seasons, not to mention the energy she brings off the bench. I don’t even know how many times she’s changed the momentum of the match in our favor after a great defensive dig or a service ace.

Yup… both will be greatly missed!

Kanani is already someone special. The young lady is everything she was hyped to be coming into UH.

I predict that Kanani and Brittany Hewitt will be the faces of the Wahine program for the next few seasons, barring injuries of course.

But getting back to the seniors of 2009, one must forgive me on not mentioning Aneli Cubi-Otineru.

You could see her evolution over the past three seasons. From her serve game to the leadership she enforces on the court. Always positive and ALWAYS backing up her words!!! This girl can PLAY!

The losses of Kaufman, Brandt, and Cubi-Otineru will be big for us coming into the 2010 season.

I’m gonna try your noni leaf pack on my ankle.

Coach said that Sanford was hyping the UNLV game as a revenge game to his players. I’m sure the mtn. broadcast crew ignored the media guide and called our team the “Rainbows” out of spite. Ignore the bozos. It gives the rest of our teams free advertising.

Meatoga’s ankle injury was due to a leg whip. I think the coach said that’s illegal, but it wasn’t called. But correct me if I’m wrong…

I’m watching the Miami-Indy game. Was it played earlier? The Fish made one TD in the first half… I love listening to Gruden analyze the game.

Imagine if schools could promote their student athletes like how the pros do?

But then again that’s borderline extortion.

La’au Lapa’au is very effective in the hands of the right healers. It is more than the herbs and physical treatments. It is also a spiritual healing that allows the person to overcome weakness and injury and become unattractive to further maladies. There is a special connection between patient and healer and it works on multiple levels.
Motivations must be pure and unsullied by personal desire for gain. That is why true practitioners never charge a fee of any sort.
And conversely, the healed one has been “paid forward” to find joy in using whatever talents and skills he has been blessed with to help others.

This selfless, healing attitude is one of the secrets of true civilization- and something witnessed often in the Tsai-ko ohana.

My major worry about the Wahine volleyball team is that the WAC is down this year so they won’t be sharpened against tough competition each week. I hope that they can continue to improve with each game like the other top teams…it is hard to do that when they sweep almost every WAC match while others have to battle against tough competition.

  123. RainbowCliff September 21, 2009 9:34 pm

Good evening Tsaiko Nation, the term Rainbow Warrior has been linked to Hawaii in it’s early period of Athletics. I played under that name my entire carrer and was PROUD of it. It has tradition with the MANY great teams back then as I did a term paper on the subject my final year in 1981 as I read my words on the subject 28 years later If I may have your attention.

The Rainbow is solidly entrenched In Hawaiian lore. They were sacred to high chiefs and appeared as signs of a chief prescence. A Rainbow hovering over a new born child indicated that he was of God-Like Rank.

Rainbows were always seen in beautiful Manoa Valley, the site of the University Of Hawaii. The refreshing Manoa Mist makes the Valley one of Hawaii’s most verdant and also makes Rainbows appear over the campus with regularity.

Reporters began calling them “The Rainbow Warriors” as early as the 1930’s. Explanation for the name was a long held TRADITION that Hawaii would not lose a game when a RAINBOW appeared. So please don’t be MAD when announcers mistake the Warriors with Rainbow. I know now you are Warriors BUT the Rainbow was given by your Hawaiian sacred chiefs and YOUR Hawaii history is BEAUTIFUL and SACRED as I live it and breath it every day living in LA.

I got an A on this paper and still keep it TODAY. Mahalo for allowing me to share it with you. Sincerely, RAINBOWCLIFF !

  125. whitey September 21, 2009 9:40 pm

lizk, one last thing about healers. they are not limited to one nationality or sex. they can be anyone, but what they have in common is a gift to heal.

  126. Kazz (SEVEN more for Coach Shoji) September 21, 2009 9:41 pm

    ***CORRECTION***

Provided the Wahine win ALL matches starting from this Thursday night (09/24) against Boise State straight through their match against LaTech at home on Wednesday October 14, 2009, then THAT will represent Dave Shoji’s 1000th win.

So yes, if the Wahine win all matches until Wed Oct 14th, then their potential win at home against LaTech will be Dave Shoji’s 1000th win.

The home game against SJSU on Friday Oct 9th would be Dave Shoji’s 999th win.

  127. 808ike September 21, 2009 9:42 pm

    Garret,

You’re right. Competition has to come during practice. Another way is for
the team to name a # of points they will allow against a WAC school.
Example: Boise St. @ UH. UH should not allow Boise St. to score more
than 15 pts. in all the games. This will force the players to play hard.

  128. Kazz (SEVEN more for Coach Shoji) September 21, 2009 9:48 pm

Not exactly the best night to hope for a large crowd on hand at Manoa for Coach Shoji’s potential 1000th win on a Wednesday, but it’s kind of symbolic in the sense that the person most likely to not pay much attention to win # 1000 is the man himself.

I think the only 4-digit number Shoji is concerned with is “1987”… the last time the Wahine won a national title or maybe the number “2003” as to the last time the Wahine reached that far in the NCAA’s resulting in a four set loss to Florida in the Final Four.

(Hmmm… why do I feel like I am re-hashing a Ferd Lewis column????)

Anyway, hope the Stanley will be full as possible that Wednesday night for the most successful head coach in all of UH athletics!

Kazz, you are so RIGHT Shoji should have a stature bronze in and outside the stadium for what he has accomplish in WINS at UH. He was so YOUNG in 1976 when he first began with Rocky Elias, Waynette Mitchell and Doctor Donna Thompson THE WOMEN AD who fought hard for title IX and you see the results from it.

A quiet but FIERCE competitor who has brought nothing but GREATNESS to Hawaii Wahine Volleyball. Always been a fan of his and grew up with him in the early days of shared practice in Klum Gym and BIG games in Blaisdel.

One game I will NEVER forget was when The Late Great All American Flo Hyman of Houston came over to play the wahine and the game was played in Klum Gym. Bruddah that was a GREAT game as the stands were packed and Hawaii fans were on top of the roof peeping through the windows to watch. Loud with feet stomping and cheers of “Give m Bows echoing the Gym as it felt like an earthquake.

Houston won as I was only able to see it because I stayed late after practice and hid under the stands when personal staff was clearing everybody out. Found me a bench area and witness wahine volleyball history ! Give a LOUD shout-out for Coach Shoji for me when 1000 is in the books. Mahalo Nui Loa Kind Sir !

  135. Kazz (SEVEN more for Coach Shoji) September 21, 2009 10:10 pm

    Aloha RainbowCliff,

While many UH fans understand the significance of the “Rainbow” in relation to UH athletics and how the name came to be, our mainland counterparts, for the most part, have no clue…. Most of them.

If our actual name was still the Rainbow Warriors or Rainbows, then for me there is no personal issue.

I have my own feelings towards the ignorance the mainland sports media has on ALL of UH athletics stemming from all the men and women programs.

Those in the media have taken to use the name “Rainbows” against us in a negative connotation and while the use of the name can be interpreted by those that hear it, namely us here in Hawaii, one cannot deny the way those in the mainland use it against us. From these media types, I personally do not hear any sort of respect to our past tradition as Rainbow Warriors with respect to the football team, especially in recent mainland broadcasts or mainland sports articles.

It’s a double standard I guess in the sense that you’ll rarely see or hear one local correct another local when referring to the current football team as “Bows”, BUT I think more locals would be quicker to correct a mainland non-UH fan from referring to the current football team as “Bows”.

So in my mind, and most likely the minds of many UH supporters, they, the mainland media, have taken something many here were, and still proud of, and spit upon it with their slight on the former football nickname with their interpretation of how they perceive a “Rainbow”.

I agree with you, the “Rainbow” name is ours and only OURS in the sense of what the Rainbow means to Hawaii fans and more importantly former UH student athletes and we should be proud of it. I am, the bloggers here are, and thousands of others are proud of it to.

However, what I cannot be silent about is how others use OUR traditions as something to mock.

Again, others may not see it that way, but I do.

As a former UH student athlete, you have walked the walk and talked the talk. I have nothing but respect for former Rainbow Warriors and former Rainbow Wahine which is why I am responding with the utmost respect to your post.

As a UH supporter, please do not take my previous posts as if I am “disowning” our football past. However at the same time, I cannot apologize for my personal and exclusive feelings for those that refuse to do their homework on us. To me, that is disrespectful.

They can ignore our wins, our stats, and they can ignore the fact that we have great young men and women locally and from all over the country and the world representing all the UH programs, but I cannot stay silent when they use our past and personal traditions such as the “Rainbow” nickname to try to disguise their actual perceptions of UH athletics.

  136. Kazz (SEVEN more for Coach Shoji) September 21, 2009 10:19 pm

    RainbowCliff,

I still kind of laugh when some have to remind me Dave Shoji is like 60 years old.

For him to still be on top of the game and being able to adjust and BEAT out the new and young coaches speaks volumes.

Like many great coaches, he’d be the first to acknowledge that he wouldn’t have been able to do it without the assistants he’s had over the years, but we all know, with respect to past and current assistants, that a program is only as good as the person on top of it, and that is Dave Shoji.

Many articles have been written and more will come after his 1000th win, but man… none of them will ever do justice.

I’D HATE TO HAVE TO FILL HIS SHOES!!!

Speaking of… I like how you can see Charlie Wade in the background during the Wahine games…

Don’t wanna make something out of nothing, but C’MON!!!! C’MON!!!! The Hawaii fans know… We know…

whitey- agreed. Healers come in all sizes and shapes and cultures. They resonate with spirit and place. Here, I have personally interacted with Hawaiian, Filipino, Portagee and Chinese healers. Folks on Niihau could heal compound fractures. No time for boats and before helicopters.

Slugger- you just need to find someone who can help you. Perhaps Kekoa folks can turn you on to someone when they return. Heinekin Healer may be able to help too.

Rainbow Warriors is my personal favorite team name too. I can imagine skill and heart controlling physical power. The football application would be a team with surgical skill: slippery, elusive, unstoppable on offense and mind-reading, insertive and impassible on defense.

Rainbow Cliff is Hawaii’s ambassador of hope and aloha wherever he goes and to whomever crosses his path. His compassion for others is a strength born from long, hard, personal tests and suffering that have burned away the dross of frivolous and selfish distractions. LOVED IT as you should of got Hawaii media coverage. Wanted to take a picture so bad but I could not get your entire face. A picture worth a thousand words. Can you download the interview that you had of me. E-mail is at the top at post 151. Had an AWESOME time meeting you and sharing hugs and laughter. IMUA WARRIORS !

  156. al September 21, 2009 11:28 pm

rainbowcliff….hahaha. well compared to the old penebacker fro…..yup, i remember you always having your gameface on and you played with much heart and left it on the court.

  157. RainbowCliff September 21, 2009 11:51 pm

Al, I and John Pennebacker were very close with the FRO’S. That Fab 5 team was truely remarkable BUT the BEST basketball player to come out of UH past and present was #14 Tom Henderson. A truely gifted powerful point guard that could run a offense, spread the court and D any one that may come across his path. Quick, strong and FEARLESS ! Had the respect of the ENTIRE Islands as a 2 time All American Guard playing for the Hawaii Rainbows. Got a GREAT picture of him and BIG man Tommy Barker in aloha shorts. Priceless !

  158. al September 21, 2009 11:58 pm

tom henderson was a sight to behold wasn’t he. he looked like he could play strong safety for larry price.

another guy who got away was reggie carter, i think he went back to st. john’s.

  159. al September 22, 2009 12:00 am

dwight holiday may have been the most gifted guy on the fab five. i thought he had nba potential.

  160. RainbowCliff September 22, 2009 12:01 am

Well kind folks it is 3:04 in the morning and I am going to call it a GOOD NIGHT MORNING ! Enjoyed posting with all of you as sharing conversation, topic subject and communication on Hawaii athletics AWESOME ! You god folks are simply the best, better then all the rest ! Send a Hawaii trade wind my way as you touch and feel sandy beach for me. Can you see me now “My Hawaiian Eyes !

  161. RainbowCliff September 22, 2009 12:16 am

Al, Reggie Carter could of been talked about with the BEST players that Hawaii had to offer. A pure freshmen with quick shooting skills and wonderful playmaking ability. Brought Hawaii fans to there feet on many occasion keeping the Bows close or winning game shots at the buzzer. Left after his freshmen year because of NCAA violations, firing of Bruce O Neil and the infamous Honolulu Ford Commercial. When Carter transferred to St. Johns, Hawaii recruited a 5’11 All CIF guard from Verbum Dei High School in California Cliff Sanchez who brought his tenacity and fire to Rainbow Basketball and played FEARLESS on the court !

Dwight Holiday a PURE small forward with uncanny ability to face or post with any one in the country ! TREMENDOUS player who could play all 5 spots on the floor. Tough and tremendously gifted with raw athletic talent. Mr. Do It All. Wow Al keep it coming ! forget sleep !

  162. Slugger September 22, 2009 12:27 am

    Great history, Rainbow Cliff!

    G’Night all!

  163. RainbowCliff September 22, 2009 12:36 am

G’Night Slugger and MAHALO for the accolades !

  164. al September 22, 2009 12:37 am

reggie cross….tough guy under the basket. had everything but an outside shot. had a brief look at the nba’s. could have been all world as a supersized tight end or defensive end.

  165. al September 22, 2009 12:39 am

i like the uncanny, innate abilities of phil lott.

  166. al September 22, 2009 12:42 am

if chris gaines played as hard as cliff sanchez….he could have been sumting.

but, ac carter will always be in my top five. for what he did on the court and what he gave to his alumni is just unreal. he could have been an all world wide receiver or centerfielder.

  167. RainbowCliff September 22, 2009 12:43 am

Yes Al, Reggie Cross was a tough forward with an NBA body. Did some work for the bows posting, rebounding and playing tough inside. A duplicate clone of KARL malone the mail man. Met him in LA at LMU NBA summer games when he finish his career some time in the late 80’s. Gave me a warm aloha hug as I wish him well trying to make an NBA squad. A NICE person !

  168. RainbowCliff September 22, 2009 12:50 am

Al, AC was tremendous with Alika Smith who could play to. Carter did give back to the Athletic Department and left a legacy at UH for all time. Charismatic and athletically gifted. TREMENDOUS floor leader for the BOWS !

Chris Gaines had talent BUT like you stated did not put it out on the court everynight. Well Al I am going this time. GOT YOUR E-MAIL AND WILL SEND YOU THE PICS SOON. Take care and GREAT talking to you on Hawaii athletics as we are the only ones left on the blog. Take care kind sir as we will continue more topic in the near future.

    Kazz:

Mahalo for your self-correction on which is the earliest 1,000th win – Wednesday, October 14.

A quick reminder that there’ll be HI-5 recycling drives at the home game T-Gates.

The bin(s) will be set out no later than 11 am and all the recyclables – including donations brought from home – will be stored during the breakdown before the opening ceremonies at Aloha Stadium. We’ll set the bin back up at the post-game party as well. .

    Here are the October beneficiaries:

Saturday, October 10: FRESNO STATE, Hawaii High School Athletic Association SAVE OUR SPORTS Fund Drive

Saturday, October 24: BOISE STATE, “Serving Up 1,000” Fundraiser honoring Coach Shoji’s 1,000th win.

We’ll also pick up quantities in excess of 250 containers anywhere on O`ahu on the Sunday following the T-Gate provided that arrangements are made no later than the Friday before since we’ll have to borrow a truck.

Again, ALL of the redemption fees will be made on behalf of the Tsaikos & will be sent to the designated recipients within 48 – 72 hours of each T-Gate.

Mahalo in advance for supporting these youth and UH athletic programs.

    Great Morning All!

A restful but studious day for the Warriors. Unwind a little, get back into the flow of regular class attendance, start the process of emerging again as Road Warriors.

  173. RainbowCliff September 22, 2009 6:04 am

POMAI, you are something else ! WONDERFUL shot of some GREAT guys my senior year ! The circle shot was my quick cross over running the wheel offense. Took that small guard off the dribble and put him on my HIP ! left handed POUND dribble extension to the hole ! Layed it on continuation and ONE ! Crowd CHEERED ! Priceless bra ! Mahalo for sharing my Kama Aina Bruddah !

Dishima1, the pleasure is all mine as the short time we had was
not long enough with SO many Tsaikos at cici’s. The short time
that we spend was laughable and pleasurable. ENJOY your brother
Izzy as we rode up and back together to the stadium sharing so much information on UH past and present. Couldn’t believe you guys were BROTHERS. The Hawaii sequel to Laurel and Hardy !

I am interested in the recycle project.
I would love to get Palama Settlement involved by having them help with the collection and then splitting the $$ with them. How about we do this on a bigger scale and 1/3 to the Tsaiko designee, 1/3 to Palama Settlement/1/3 to Na Koa?
I have access to the stadium parking lots and the stadium gates.
Do you want to get involved in this?
