Forcier: "Very interested in Hawaii"

Received this text today from quarterback Tate Forcier:

Hey, man. Yeah, I’m very interested in Hawaii. Looking to set up a visit as soon as possible. Hawaii is a good school and a great program to play for. My brother knows Colt Brennan, and he loved it at Hawaii, and I’m sure I would, to(o). My high school team play(ed) a Hawaii team my junior year of HS. I loved it out there.

Quarterback Shane Austin was on the clock.

The UH worker could not lock the gate to the Ching Athletic Complex yesterday until Austin left, and Austin wasn’t going to leave until he kicked a soccer ball over the 20-foot-high fence.

Kick.

Clang!

Kick.

Clang!

Finally, the ball cleared the fence.

“Sorry about the delay,” said Austin, the nation’s leader in politeness. “Maybe if it doesn’t work out in football, I can play futbol.”

The worker understood. To know Austin is to know he has the QB gene: He does not like incompletions.

Austin, a fifth-year senior, will enter his final training camp as the Warriors’ No. 2 quarterback.

“It’s basically the same thing every year: Work a little harder each time,” Austin said. “If you’re not getting better, you’re getting worse. You want to come out there with that mentality. I want to get better.”

Austin has embraced strength coach Tommy Heffernan’s offseason conditioning program. Heffernan and assistant Grant Steen designed a workout profile for each player. There is a strict timetable for a player’s progress level.

“They go by your percentages,” Austin said. “Each day, they’re telling you which percentage you should be lifting. They’re really keeping track of it. They’re helping you not to slack off. All of my credit has to go to Tommy and the weight-room staff.”

Heffernan also uses various motivational tools, including posting goal charts.

“The other day, they had some videos playing (in the weight room), motivational stuff,” Austin said. “That always keeps us going. Eye on the prize. We’ve got Colorado that first game. It’s just a constant reminder of what we’re working for.”

Austin, who entered the program as a walk-on (he earned a scholarship in his third UH year), has overcome obstacles. Days before the start of the 2009 season, his moped was struck, spilling him to the asphalt and leaving him with virtually no identifiable handprints. He wore gloves to hide the injury, and did not miss a rep in training camp.

Last year, he suffered injuries when his car was struck by a truck. He was hospitalized, but still returned, and did not miss any time.

He said his best college experience has been growing “closer to God.”

“When you know you have that confidence in a higher being who has an overall plan and a bigger picture, you don’t dwell on what’s happening right now if things aren’t going your way,” Austin said. “You have to stay ready in every situation, not just football, and be ready for that next great moment. If not, it might just pass right by you without you noticing it.”

Austin and right wideout Royce Pollard show that football is a cerebral game:

Cornerback Tank Hopkins plays tough coverage on Pollard:

Hopkins, who redshirted last year to recover from a pelvic injury, is quite an athlete. The Warriors play a game of “Fire Away” in which they whip passes at each other at relatively close range. Hopkins has the hands — and courage — to make those catches:

  4. al June 16, 2011 12:38 am

looks like all of these guys out there are a lot more buffed than last year.

tank looks like he is leaner and yet meaner. this is one tank who can get off the ground. perhaps a healthy tank will help shore up the defensive backfield which will be another unit with many newbies.

  5. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2011 12:40 am

    Who’s been looking for me?

  6. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 16, 2011 12:43 am

Bringing this over from yesterdays topic since it was posted so late.

**Why does Tate deny any contact with UH???**

    twitter status: http://twitter.com/#!/QBForce/status/81100187107471360

    .

I can buy that Hawaii doesn’t have to “leak” that this high profile QB shown interest in our program, but does so to gain some media attention.

The decision however has already been made that Tate won’t be given a chance and Tate denies it to save face.

Either way, UH will never need to comment further and Tate goes on his jolly way finds a college and the whole subject falls into irrelevance.

    – –

timing is everything…was the decision to leak this article today an editorial decision? or requested by “the source?”

anything significant going on with college football/UH Recruiting/Fundraising this week?

again, will put on my tinfoil hat and crawl back into my bunker.

    #5,

the whole world. lots of discussion/debate on yesterday blog as you can imagine/already read.

i think people just wondering why u weren’t ur chipper self haha.

  9. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2011 12:50 am

    UH didn’t leak it.

    I accidentally found out.

And I did see the letter. I also have Forcier’s cell number.

    #9,

Accidents usually cost me money. You are one lucky Chinese man.

  12. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2011 12:52 am

And I didn’t know anybody was looking for me.

We were supposed to go bowling tonight, but I fell asleep, and when I woke up at 9 p.m., nobody wanted to bowl anymore.

  13. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2011 12:54 am

If anybody wanted to find me, they can call me. I do list my cell number on this blog.

Anyway, Forcier can say whatever he wants, but I did see the letter, and the release.

  14. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 16, 2011 12:54 am

Did the letter seem to be more of a form letter or did it have specifics as to why Hawaii is a place he wants to be?

  15. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 16, 2011 12:55 am

    #13,

I’d take your word over his any day. Just was thinking out loud to see what the angle for UH or Forcier was…if there was an angle.

  16. al June 16, 2011 12:55 am

i like the fact that in recent years we have had a lot more success with the california community college athletes. loads of talent to be had.

but, i hope that tank hopkins will not be the last of the texas jc pipeline. and we’ve had some great ones from navarro, blinn for example.

jake patek, ryan mouton, hot rod bradley, e-rob robinson, tank hopkins, myron newberry, and gerard lewis.

  17. Slugger June 16, 2011 12:56 am

WheeHa! Go, guys! Work out and out-work each other. They are looking good. So great to see that Tank is in good health and making those plays that we know he can.

ST ~ Are they practicing only in the afternoons or are some of the practices in the morning? I have too many things going on this week. People to see, places to go, golf carts to drive. 😀

I really need to make it to campus to watch the action.

  18. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 16, 2011 12:57 am

    Slugger,

    Matt Ma…Iolani alumni right?

  19. Slugger June 16, 2011 12:58 am

It was just Shane Austin’s birthday. Happy belated birthday!

Oprah was quoting something that goes, “Good Luck” is preparation meeting opportunity. Keep working at it, guys!

  20. al June 16, 2011 12:58 am

the truth…that’s what i called stephen years ago.

what stephen posts/writes is always the truth.

i’ve never doubted any of his stuff.

  21. al June 16, 2011 12:59 am

but, yah. gracie was wondering of your whereabouts.

  22. Slugger June 16, 2011 12:59 am

    iwwthm,

Yup, I think he won his match today.

  23. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2011 12:59 am

This all started last week when somebody started talking about the QB situation for 2012, then listed the candidates.

That’s when I mentioned there might be another consideration that nobody knows about.

I said I’d ID the guy in a week. People kept asking me about him, so I talked to people at UH and said, I’m just going to reveal it.

    And I did.

  24. 99club June 16, 2011 1:00 am

    Good morning Tsaikos…

The 1st picture above is pretty funny…what characters. My initial impression on the Forcier issue yesterday was that he may not have been looking for the best program but for the program furthest away from Michigan (Miami, Hawaii). I’ll let the shrinks discuss that one…

  25. Slugger June 16, 2011 1:01 am

My buddy Jon said that he played Lorens Chan in the Manoa Cup when Chan was 12 or 14 and got whupped. It was a lot of fun being out there watching the tournament.

  26. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 16, 2011 1:01 am

    #22,

Played with..well against him while in high school. Was a great golfer in high school.

st…isn’t it amazing what the janitors will tell?

  28. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 16, 2011 1:03 am

    and occam’s razor it is.

  29. SteveM June 16, 2011 1:04 am

I fell asleep after the CC too.

    Not unusual…. “children’s table” indeed! 😐

  30. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2011 1:06 am

That actually wasn’t going to be the focus of my story. I was going to write about the roster, which UH was supposed to post Monday. But UH is waiting to write the bios of four newcomers.

  31. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2011 1:09 am

    SteveM:

I went to the CC, then paid half the wedding bill, then went to the office, then went to UH for three hours, then went back to the office, then came home, then ate, then took a nap, then paid bills, then worked on my son’s graduation party plans, then transcribed my notes, then posted a blog item, then found out that people were looking for me.

  32. Slugger June 16, 2011 1:11 am

UH is finally updating the photos of the players. Can’t tell the players without a scorecard… I give the coaches a lot of credit. They remember most all of the players names. I just go up to the guys and ask… and tell them I’m one of their “Aunties”.

TV news stories were crediting the Star-Advertiser for the Forcier story and said that the coaches can’t contact recruits right now. So…

K, I’d better get going… have to be in the garden tomorrow morning.

Night all! Thanks for the pics, ST!

  33. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 16, 2011 1:13 am

not knowing or talking to Tate personally but having read the letter and knowing of his skill set…how serious should we take him?

  34. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2011 1:18 am

    Slugger:

There are usually a bunch of guys out there in the late afternoon.

They have several “supervised” conditioning drills. After Tommy and Grant leave, the players can do whatever they want.

But the players are starting to re-think the 7-on-7 times. The conditioning drills started late on Tuesday, which led to a late start for the 7-on-7s. By the time the 7s finished, it was after 6:30 p.m., when the dorm cafeteria closes. (Not sure why the cafeteria is open only from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. for dinner.)

Wednesday’s 7s had a smaller group, but it ended early enough for the players who live in the dorm to get some food.

  35. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2011 1:24 am

    I wonder …:

I have no idea what his level of interest is.

I’m sure UH will check out his background, because he is a high-profile guy.

This is unchartered territory. With Masoli, that was a guy who graduated from a local high school, and was coached by Rolo at CC of SF.

This is different. There’s no history between Forcier and UH, although I think McMackin knows Rich Rodriguez.

  36. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2011 1:26 am

    Also, this was unsolicited.

It would be like if a company called you up, saying it had an opening.

You could be content with your job and have no interest in moving on, but I’m pretty sure you’d still want to get some background.

    Just in case.

  37. Hawaiianbod June 16, 2011 1:27 am

ST – just reading what u did yesterday left me exhausted. Thank u for ur time and effort in producing a daily blog! U r appreciated!!

  38. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2011 1:35 am

    Hawaiianbod:

I was just surprised about the Where’s-Waldo comments since I’m pretty easy to reach.

  39. al June 16, 2011 1:35 am

so ferd has his take on the forcier scenario…

    http://www.staradvertiser.com/sports/ferdswords/20110616_UH_had_better_do_its_homework_on_Forcier.html

  40. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2011 1:39 am

Usually, when I write a recruiting story involving a high school player, there’s always a little uncertainty. I’ve had players tell me they’re committing, and then two days later, they say they’re not committing. Or sometimes a player has borderline grades/test scores, but the intent is that if he doesn’t make it, he’ll try again in another year or be placed in a UH-friendly junior college.

But with Forcier, there was no doubt at all he contacted UH. Now he could have contacted a lot of others, but he did contact UH.

  41. al June 16, 2011 1:44 am

well, it made for great conversation.

  42. SteveM June 16, 2011 1:48 am

    RE: #31

ST — well, I came home, looked at the back yard, looked at the lawn mower, then fell asleep in my computer chair. I must have missed your bowling call. I missed Al’s anniversary too–but somehow I keep mistaking his Boss for his daughter…

OK, Gracie — I’m done filling in for you. You’re up next.

    Good night everyone.

  43. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2011 1:48 am

    The skills camp starts Friday.

    That should be pretty interesting.

  44. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2011 1:51 am

There’s also that UH fund-raiser later this month. I think it’s at the Oahu Country Club. That’s the one where the former UH players attend.

  45. al June 16, 2011 1:55 am

you should publish a list of the skills camp attendees. that should draw a lot of interest by the warrior hopeful.

  46. al June 16, 2011 1:55 am

    ok…i am out.

  47. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2011 2:03 am

    Al:

Actually, UH said it is not permitted to release the names of the campers.

Which is why the only way is to go to the camp, and ask the players.

However, since I’m on vacation, if somebody wants to go to the camp and post the names …

I think she is still mad about the car (3 years)

Husky fans looking forward to the Warriors’ visit in September — something about payback. Coug fans are beginning to voice some Warrior support.

I guess some Cougs cheer any Husky loss.

  59. wafan June 16, 2011 2:59 am

If the boss is still upset with the car (3 years) I guess you have not done anything, since then, to upset her.

How is the redecorated dog house?

  60. Rasu Begasu June 16, 2011 3:00 am

Also those of you who are joining us on the bus after the Tailgate lunch.

Please check in at SteveM’s site too.

Most likely the lunch will be at a casino near the stadium

since they will have low rates and lots of room

Last two UH games the R/T bus ride was about $15 (tip included), expect 5-10% more this year

Likely will go with large mini busses again for quick loading and quick in n out

  61. Rasu Begasu June 16, 2011 3:02 am

Oh, I’ve done a lot to piss her off!

  67. wafan June 16, 2011 3:11 am

Time to head to school. Last day for seniors was yesterday. Today is the traditional Senior Prank Day. Ugh.

I nearly proposed teachers prank the seniors by signing their graduation admit slips with disappearing ink. Thought better of it when I realized they would come back to me to re-sign the forms.

  68. wafan June 16, 2011 3:14 am

See? That is one of the problems — see through lavatories. And, on that crazy double-decker plane they have — look up and what might you see?

    Ummmmmmmmm, yeah. Too weird.

  69. Rasu Begasu June 16, 2011 3:14 am

I agree, the carbonation from a can of Diet Coke (not Pepsi)

A 20 oz bottle will cancel out 2 brownies, a package of Twinkies

Some are pretty funny and innovative. Others are just plain destructive. When I had a darkroom they put goldfish and neon-tetras in my rinse tank one year. Another year they brought in Krispie-Kreme doughnuts — all the doughnuts had a bite taken or teeth marks.

If they do not like you the “pranks” tend to get ugly — glued locks, . . .

Most interesting was the vehicle on the roof.

  75. wafan June 16, 2011 3:25 am

Hope everyone has an awesome Friday!!!

  76. Rasu Begasu June 16, 2011 3:28 am

I’m not complaining, but I did win a t shirt a few months ago.

Right after I complained that I never win anything.

    .

Does it count as a win if you never get the shirt?

Kinda like gettin a plate lunch from Rainbow’s and

dropping food side down on the way to the car.

Or getting a kiss on the cheek by the hottest girl

in the room, who is also your cousin

  79. rage777 June 16, 2011 4:45 am

What is Tank’s vertical? I know he is bending his knees in the picture, but that is still pretty high.

  80. d1shima June 16, 2011 5:11 am

    Great Morning All!

…ever more interesting is the back story. 😉

  81. d1shima June 16, 2011 5:14 am

    Nice story about Shane Austin.

I can recall coaches/bosses who’ve helped me feel “closer to God” 😯

  82. mctruck June 16, 2011 5:14 am

I was checking out UH’s 1st opponent,(Colorado), and noticed that the Buff’s three(3) deep rb-chart lists as follows; rodney stewart(5’6″/175lbs.), tony jones(5’7″/180lbs.), brian lockridge(5’7″/180lbs.)…gotta be some-fast, because they aren’t substantial size other than that??

Tank’s high-flying body bumps with other players???..that worries me….they gotta be careful not to get carried away with those situations…although, I realize that’s the craze nowdays…better safe than sorry, I say.

  83. d1shima June 16, 2011 5:29 am

    Congratulations A-A Kolten Wong!

Wong is the first UH player named to Baseball America’s first team since pitcher Bryan Duquette made the list in 1982.

  84. whitey June 16, 2011 6:12 am

  86. gigi-hawaii June 16, 2011 6:31 am

    ST, great pictures!

Do the guys wax their chests?

    Strange to see hairless chests…

  87. Buffoman June 16, 2011 6:33 am

With Forcier too bad we don’t have a Samson Satele on the team: the leader. I remember when Colt came, the “quiet man” let it be known what would be acceptable behavior and what was not to be tolerated. Looking back, that was quite an O-line we had back then.

Don’t know rules of the game (NCAA stuff) but if Coach could have Samson do an interview of the potential candidate that may clear things up pretty quickly.

  88. gigi-hawaii June 16, 2011 6:33 am

    So, the mystery is solved.

Now, we know where ST was all day yesterday.

Gracie wanted to know why you weren’t blogging…

  89. mctruck June 16, 2011 6:39 am

Forgot to congradulate, Kolten Wong,(1st team-AA). Hope more local gems decide to hop on the band-wagon(UH).

  90. Kaimiloa June 16, 2011 6:44 am

McBride… I thought you meant that he may have a future in politics because he has shirtless photos on the web.

  91. jm2375 June 16, 2011 7:02 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Congrats to Mr. Wong on his A-A selection!!

    Nice pixs ST.

After bowling pretty well Saturday, I really had an off-night last night. Ugh.

  92. tommui June 16, 2011 7:33 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Good shots ST. Got to go up to UH and get my t-shirt from you.

And best wishes to Kolten Wong. Wish our local kids would have the same feelings as Kolten did in playing for our State instead of the usual “we are playing for Hawaii” by going to the Mainland!

  93. RedZone June 16, 2011 7:51 am

    Please no qb dramas.

Just checked the UH roster. So much talent there.

ST who is the backup long snapper?

  94. duffer June 16, 2011 7:53 am

    Good morning TSAIKOS

Made it to Turtle Bay via Waianae. 🙂

Any recommendations as to what Kahuku shrimp wagon is da best?

  95. Buffoman June 16, 2011 7:56 am

It’s the shrimp wagon that actually sells Kahuku shrimp. Lot’s of imitators.

  96. Slugger June 16, 2011 7:59 am

    Good morning, gang!

    duffer,

    My Uncle likes Giovanni’s.

  97. Derek June 16, 2011 8:00 am

New nickname: “Stone Cold” Shane Austin.

We should stop talking about Forcier and concentrate on finding the new great “holy grail”. Right, Al? Somebody who is about 6’3″ or 6’4″, 215lbs, runs 40 in 4.4, vertical at 10ft, and 70% completion percentage, 5 to 1 TD to interceptions ratio, and undefeated in high school.

  98. wafan June 16, 2011 8:01 am

    100 or thereabouts.

  99. gigi-hawaii June 16, 2011 8:02 am

    Derek, lol.

    very funny.

  100. duffer June 16, 2011 8:04 am

    Mahalo buffoman & slugger.

Hey slugger wanna caddy for da kid next Manoa Cup?

  101. al June 16, 2011 8:10 am

    giovanni’s is the original.

  102. al June 16, 2011 8:11 am

derek…i’ve been calling him stone cold since he arrived.

  103. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 16, 2011 8:12 am

    * * Rolovich on Bobby Curran Show * *

So this morning Rolovich was on Curran’s show and off course he could not comment specifically on any specifics regarding recruits.

However he did comment and I paraphrase…

“We are ALWAYS looking for the best talent out there and with the needs coming up over the next couple of years (MWC move etc.) its important that we get talent.”

He also states that the kid has to be a fit, willing to learn, and that Hawaii is a place that if you come with an open mind/heart you will gain a lot from it.

He commented that in Masoli’s case, he wasn’t going to be a fit because he only had 1 year or something.

I don’t want to read deeper into his comments then what its face value is, but IF I were to Forcier might be still a strong consideration depending on HIS willingness to open up to Hawaii and our system.

  104. al June 16, 2011 8:12 am

tom…exactly. you ain’t playing for hawaii unless you are playing in hawaii.

  105. Slugger June 16, 2011 8:13 am

    duffer,

All I know how to do now is to drive the golf cart… 🙂 Met Phil Anamizu; do Cassy and the kid work with him?

  106. al June 16, 2011 8:14 am

    duffer…matsumoto store for shaved ice.

  107. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 16, 2011 8:16 am

I like Rolovich’s attitude and principals regarding new talent. To know Hawaii is always looking for the best of the best at all times shows me we take building this program and making it successful very very seriously.

I am also glad he said “WE” and not “I”…makes a big difference if its just his opinion rather than the entire program itself (Mack included).

  108. duffer June 16, 2011 8:17 am

Philip is a Lahainaluna grad. He’s a Oahu boy. Cassy worked with Brenda Rego until recently.

Phillip knows almost all the golfers, he’s that old. 🙂

  109. Slugger June 16, 2011 8:20 am

    iwwthm,

I’m going back to lurking on the recruit issue.

    GO WARRIORS!

  110. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 16, 2011 8:27 am

There is a little counter at the bottom of Tate’s website…10,000,000+ visits.

Maybe half of those are from his parents? lol jk

  111. Slugger June 16, 2011 8:27 am

    duffer,

Phil said that he captains the amateur team when the kids are earning points to play in the Sony Open. I don’t understand what that all entails, but he was very enthusiastic about the kids. Nice man.

  112. gigi-hawaii June 16, 2011 8:31 am

Can anyone recommend a good golf tutor?

Hubby and I need to improve our drives and our putting.

Needs to be on weekends or evenings, as hubby works full time M-F.

  113. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 16, 2011 8:40 am

    #114

    kelvin miyahara

    beau yokomoto

    casey nakama

they come to mind right off the top of my head.

  114. Old Diver June 16, 2011 8:41 am

I haven’t read one article stating that UH is anywhere near being in Forcier’s top five list. Has anyone?

  115. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 16, 2011 8:47 am

    #116,

Last time I read there isn’t a list of top 5 or top 500 schools so Hawaii could be #1 or #500.

Unless you have a link to his top schools so far?

I do know there was speculation he really wanted to be at USC, but that was just speculation and USC wasn’t actively pursuing him.

  116. Old Diver June 16, 2011 8:52 am

    #116

    Thanks

  117. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2011 8:56 am

    Gigi:

I wouldn’t know if they shave their chests.

There aren’t many things I don’t mind asking a player, but, asking a player if he shaves isn’t on that list.

In the old days, players shaved their ankles so it wouldn’t sting when they took off their tape.

  118. KatieTyler June 16, 2011 8:57 am

KxbPiM , tia carrere nude, 961, courtney thorne-smith hot, :),

  119. gigi-hawaii June 16, 2011 8:59 am

hey, the numbering is all off.

    ST, not shaving, but WAXING.

I saw the male dancers on Dancing with the Stars having their chests waxed.

They hollered when the plaster was ripped off.

  120. Randy F June 16, 2011 9:04 am

    ST:

Do you have the inside scoops on which former UH FB players will be helping out at the FB camp this weekend? I believe Colt is coming back from American Samoa on Friday. Perhaps he may be helping.

  121. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 16, 2011 9:05 am

This article pretty much eliminates Forcier to USC unless he wants to warm the bench.

    http://www.examiner.com/usc-trojans-in-los-angeles/tate-forcier-still-without-a-school-eyes-hawaii-for-transfer

By all accounts K-State is actively pursuing Cody Green and Green himself was quoted as saying (re: his visit) “Bill Snyder and folks are a class act…I had a lot of fun.”

Montana already has Montana…do they really want to deal with 2 of the same “problem” fighting for the same spot?

That leaves Auburn, SJSU, SDSU, Hawaii. Can’t think of any other schools that are on his current list. So i guess in some ways Hawaii is top 5…at least top 10.

  122. Da Punchbowl Kid June 16, 2011 9:11 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

As for Forcier- Tsai called it like he saw it. So did Rolo. What will be will be.

Congrats to our Baseball All-American, Kolten Wong!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  125. Da Punchbowl Kid June 16, 2011 9:12 am

“write up” that should read above.

  126. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 16, 2011 9:13 am

I hope when the Star Advertiser starts charging to view stuff online that they give these blogs the ability to give posters access to full editing tools etc.

Would be nice to be able to delete/edit posts and use color and stuff.

  127. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 16, 2011 9:13 am

    Stretch, thanks for the invite.

  129. gigi-hawaii June 16, 2011 9:20 am

I am sort of leery of being a hard-core golfer, one who golfs more than once a week.

I keep reading stories about golf-related injuries

    like broken knees

    or broken shoulders,

    requiring surgery.

  130. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2011 9:22 am

    Idon’t…:

Delete as in delete your own post?

I think they could do that.

I don’t think they’ll let you delete other people’s posts.

  131. gigi-hawaii June 16, 2011 9:23 am

What’s the going rate for golf tutors?

I heard a tutor, who works at Ft Shafter, charges $70/hr.

    Wow, highway robbery!

    #130,

Yeah I meant delete my own stuff. Like I posted the wrong # referring to Old Diver etc. Being able to correct typos etc.

Maybe when the SA starts generating more money online they will offer different things.

  134. Stretch June 16, 2011 9:25 am

Sorry for previous post, numbers are thrown off.

gigi – not sure what kind of golf you are playing that might result in broken needs or shoulders

  135. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2011 9:26 am

    Pay site:

I have no idea what the plan will be, but at other newspaper sites, I think the breaking-news stories are free (although only a few paragraphs).

I think they then give people something like 20 free views a month.

If you’re a subscriber, and I think it’s something like $10 a month, you would get the paper, and a way to access the paper on your phone or computer.

I imagine if you’re a teacher, researcher or someone like WassupDoc, you probably would be able to write it off as a work-related expense.

  136. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 16, 2011 9:28 am

    #135 pay site:

NYTimes does something similar to that…Post and Daily are still free.

  137. gigi-hawaii June 16, 2011 9:29 am

    Stretch,

look at Tiger Woods and his knee and achilles tendon injuries.

    Work-related?

But if it’s just a typo, it’s easier for you to type, “I meant ‘blog’ and not ‘bog.'”

If I’m away from a computer, it takes a while to edit posts on my phone.

  144. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 16, 2011 9:33 am

  147. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2011 9:35 am

I’m a Knicks-Jets-Mets fan, so I’ll read the Post and Daily News for my fix.

But I don’t read Newsday, which probably has better stories, because I don’t want to subscribe.

  148. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 16, 2011 9:36 am

    #146,

    =P haha.

  149. gigi-hawaii June 16, 2011 9:36 am

ST, $10 is a bit steep for many people.

Think it would affect the # of hits your blog gets?

  150. gigi-hawaii June 16, 2011 9:38 am

Why charge a subscription when the S-A posts so many ads on its website — sometimes even in the middle of ST’s blog!!!

  151. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2011 9:39 am

It should be interesting to see what happens with the blogs.

The intent should be to write blog items that are different from stories that appear in the paper. That’s because if you’re reading the blog, you’re on the same site as the newspaper.

Not sure what to do when one area of the site (daily stories) is restricted, when the other side (blogs) isn’t.

By the way, anyone notice that in the N.Y. Post’s comment section, you’re identified by your Facebook account?

  152. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 16, 2011 9:40 am

    #147,

Mets fan eh? Hmm…its makes so much sense now.

    post/daily good stuff.

Hank Gola and Mike Lupica. yep yep.

  153. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2011 9:43 am

    Gigi:

Why do you pay for Oceanic when it runs commercials?

  154. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2011 9:45 am

OK, I’m going to use the bathroom now in case anybody wants to know why I’m not on the blog or am not my usual cheery self. .

  155. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 16, 2011 9:46 am

    #154,

how long will you be gone for?

  156. gigi-hawaii June 16, 2011 9:46 am

    ST,

    TMI

    TMI

    lol

  157. d1shima (Aria'd) June 16, 2011 9:48 am

    Duffer,

Shave ice? I usually walk next door to Aoki’s and eat mine while watching all the folks wait in line at Matsumoto. 😉

  158. d1shima (Aria'd) June 16, 2011 9:52 am

Hmmm… what was the Blog Host’s phone #?

    👿

  159. Da Punchbowl Kid June 16, 2011 10:09 am

So do you imagine that a lot of Forcier speculation and anticipation has been going on in the football blogs for Miami, Kansas State, Washington, Arizona, Auburn, Montana, Southern California, San Diego State, the University of San Diego, and San Jose State?

According to the Ferd, those are the schools which Forcier has looked at as of lately.

More reasons to wait and see. Its all speculative. And we aren’t alone.

  160. Jason June 16, 2011 10:09 am

To all the Lorens Chan fans: Boo! (Just cause the guy he’s playing against is one of my students. That’s going to be a good matchup. Go Seung Jae!)

If they do not like you the “pranks” tend to get ugly — glued locks, . . .

They did that this year to a bunch of classrooms. Some students said, “They must like you, Mister!” Then we realized they were only 1st floor rooms cause the gates were locked to the upper floors. 😀

Shave ice? I usually walk next door to Aoki’s and eat mine while watching all the folks wait in line at Matsumoto. 😉

Most years, the Math Bowl is held at BYUH. Afterwards, we usually head to Haleʻiwa and get shave ice. Normally we go with whatever line is shorter, Matsumoto’s or Aoki’s. This year, though, it was a rainy Saturday. When we got to Matsumoto’s, there was absolutely no line! That was a first. Although a small line did form after we made our order, but it was still pretty short.

  161. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2011 10:12 am

Wait, did the Kettle just say, TMI?

  162. Slugger June 16, 2011 10:17 am

    #161 ~ Yup!

  163. gigi-hawaii June 16, 2011 10:18 am

Well, gracie does not normally talk about going to the bathroom.

  164. Slugger June 16, 2011 10:19 am

    Jason,

Hole #13 (the steepest) and Seung Jae is UP 3 vs. Lorens Chan.

  165. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2011 10:19 am

I’m just wondering why if people thought I was “missing,” nobody came to look.

Remind me never to go hiking by myself.

  166. gigi-hawaii June 16, 2011 10:22 am

ST, I can’t speak for others’ thoughts, but I thought you were AWOL because you were embarrassed by your Forcier article in the paper.

Maybe, I thought, Mack scolded ST for leaking it prematurely.

  167. Jason June 16, 2011 10:23 am

Slugger: How are you keeping track, is it online?

  168. Jason June 16, 2011 10:24 am

Ah, never mind, I found it.

  169. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2011 10:31 am

    Gigi:

It wasn’t premature because I wrote about it after it happened.

    Why would Mack scold me?

If I made a mistake, I would say, whoops, made a mistake.

    But I didn’t. So there’s no “whoops.”

  170. Derek June 16, 2011 10:34 am

Stephen, my condolences on being a Knick-Jets-Mets fan!!!! Things take time and eventually, good things will happen. You have a better chance with the Jets, but I’m not sold on Mark Sanchez yet. My long time suffering San Francisco 49ers and San Francisco Giants have made me happy in the last year. Giants were World Champs and 49ers got Jim Harbaugh. I think he will turn around the Niners w/in 2 to 3 years. NBA? I don’t have any favorite teams, but I will say that I don’t like the Heat. I don’t like the Lakers either, but I hate the Heat more. I’m happy for the Mavericks. I just love that Jose Juan Barea. He should be paid more for sure. Lebron? I think he’s “bachi” and he has some real “bad karma” right now and I don’t know how long that will last. 3 superstars on one team is not good. As they say, 2’s a couple, 3’s a crowd. There is only 48 minutes in a pro basketball game.

Top players usually play 35 to 44 minutes a game. There is only 1 ball. You will not see Lebron, Wade, and Bosh average 25 points per game. Somebody will have to sacrifice their games and I don’t know if any one of them will be that unselfish. Dallas as only 1 or 2 more years to have a run at another title. The Heat will be a contender for the next 4 to 6 years, BUT they will have problems winning the NBA title in any year, BECAUSE the up and coming team for the next 10 years will be the Oklahoma Thunder. They are the youngest team in the NBA and they are very, very good. Durant is only 22, Westbrook, is 21, James Harden is 21, Ibaka is 22, Perkins is pretty young. They gave the Mavericks a tough time in the Western conference final. Mark my words. The Thunder is the next great team in the NBA in the near future.

  171. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2011 10:41 am

    Derek:

Several years ago, I covered a game at Stanford. UH took an early lead, with Ray Reed and Phil Lott making several dunks.

And then, things turned cold. It’s hard to sustain that level of energy.

Sort of reminded me of the NBA Finals. LeBron had some pretty spectacular dunks in the first game and most of the second. But it’s a pro league, and opponents adjust. The Mavs’ zone defense was pretty good in taking away LeBron’s drives. The Mavs could live with LeBron and Dwyane Wade taking jump shots. Beauty of sports. Every action has a reaction.

  172. al June 16, 2011 10:42 am

The golfers are concerned if someone becomes a hard core golfer

  173. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2011 10:51 am

    Gigi:

One last thing: UH people knew the story was coming out because I told them the day before. There were no objections.

  174. gigi-hawaii June 16, 2011 10:57 am

ST, good that there were no evil repercussions.

I admit my imagination went wild.

    Sorry.

When one of my memoirs was published in 2005, my aunt called me up and screamed in my ear.

She objected to my portrayal of my grandpa, a story I got from my uncle.

Whom to believe? My aunt who said it was false or my uncle who said it was true?

In hindsight, I should not have published that story.

  175. Couch potato June 16, 2011 10:58 am

    congratulations to Kolten Wong.

    i still say no.

ST could make a personal warrior beat page on facebook. then the posters can edit, post pictures and whatnot.

you can teach an old dog new tricks adage is not always true. if you suck then so be it.

  176. gigi-hawaii June 16, 2011 11:02 am

How was the couch fishing yesterday?

  177. Couch potato June 16, 2011 11:06 am

    caught a few zzzzzz’s.

  178. SteveM June 16, 2011 11:07 am

    Good morning everyone!

    RE: #166

gigi — yesterday was Cattle Call day. It is not unusual to see the attendees MIA in the afternoon. A better assumption is that ST was there (he was). Worse, when 3 people (2 Tsai-kos and a Tsai) who arrive late sit at a 10-person table and fill the lazy susan with dim sum containers and 3 meat entrees….

  179. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2011 11:07 am

    Naps are always important.

  180. gigi-hawaii June 16, 2011 11:11 am

so, 13 people sat at a 10 person table?

    how was that possible? lol

  181. Jason June 16, 2011 11:12 am

They sat at a second table.

  182. Couch potato June 16, 2011 11:15 am

naps with more than one REM cycle makes it difficult to wake up energized. thanks to that great invention called DVR.

it’s always good to hear and see pics of the players working out. good ting get people like ST and slugger who keep us updated and informed. that way can nap more than 1 REM cycle.

  183. Couch potato June 16, 2011 11:24 am

i read commercial flights from china may commence soon. i wonder what the chinese tourist will think of the chinese food here in Hawaii?

  184. mctruck June 16, 2011 11:50 am

    Couch potato, ur#183….

My x-girl friends grandmother took me on my birthday for, in her words, authentic Chinese cuisine in old China Town. The resturant was situated like a hole in the wall kind of location and the menu was like nothing I’ve ever experienced before in my life. I had to let her order since it was at a total loss…..she kept saying, “this is authentic Chinese fan fare.”

Your question as to how a Chinese tourist view most Chinese food served in Hawaii/, reminded me of my experience, with Popo.

sorry, I was at a total loss.

  186. Couch potato June 16, 2011 11:55 am

mctruck. did you know what you ate and how did it taste?

  187. Old Diver June 16, 2011 11:59 am

I would pay $10 a month for an online sub to the StarAdvertiser. That would mean canceling my hard copy subscription though. No more than $10 since I can read most of what’s in section A off the wire services.

  188. SteveM June 16, 2011 12:06 pm

hi mctruck — as my mom once told me, most foods sold in restaurants are adopted/modified for local tastes (she was a cook). Makes sense, since restaurants must sell their food to the locals. No like food = no customers = no restaurant.

She was most critical of the old Patti’s Chinese Kitchen in Ala Moana center. I loved it. She said it was very modified to suit the tastes of all the mainland and foreign visitors. I told her I liked the modifications. I noticed the Patti’s “variations” in food prep and appearance in many Chinese restaurants after that.

  189. d1shima June 16, 2011 12:28 pm

    Authentic Chinese?

Beef Broccoli? Ever seen a Chinese cattle rancher? 😕

  190. d1shima June 16, 2011 12:29 pm

I’ve seen dogs running around some streets of various Chinatowns

    …for a little while. 😯

“You have to stay ready in every situation, not just football, and be ready for that next great moment. If not, it might just pass right by you without you noticing it.”

I knew this, but didn’t try staying ready recently. Thanks for the reminder, Austin!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

The Tsaiko-Vegas #3 web page has just been updated with Rasu Begasu’s comments earlier this morning and the UH-WA game portion quotes tom-WarriorNation’s offer to purchase tickets at Udub.

    http://home.roadrunner.com/~smurashi/tsai-kos/las2011.html

Note that this is not an interactive web page, so all updates and RSVPs must be emailed to me (Tsai-kos already listed could post updates here on the blog). email: stevem.hnl (at) gmail.com

The UH-WA game Tsai-kos and party planner are listed underneath the Vegas listing.

Last month, I forgot to post the other 2011 Away Game Tsai-ko logistics page/activity planner. It is empty but up at…

Please help fill in the blanks 🙂

  194. Slugger June 16, 2011 12:58 pm

    d1shima,

I saw dogs in cages (and cats & foxes) at the open market in Guangzhou (Canton) in 1973. I’m sure they still sell them. Turtles in tubs, dried lizards on a stick.

Sorry I can’t make the basketball China-Japan tour in August. 🙁 I really would love to spend more time in Hong Kong, but the tour is only spending the day in HK. I have a lot of shopping and eating I want to do in HK. AND, they’re going when I have a HS class reunion, so no can since I’m helping plan it. Dang! It would be a blast to tour China and watch the BasketBows play ball.

  195. Slugger June 16, 2011 1:00 pm

1973 = 1993 (AnnodahLiz got to go to China in 1973)

I think it works the other way. You pay for the newspaper subscription, and you get the online for free.

Or at least that’s the theory.

We haven’t actually seen any plans other than our editors telling us that there’s a move to pay-per-view.

  198. Kazz June 16, 2011 1:13 pm

    Iwwthm,

Yeah, in listening to Coach Rolo speak, it seems apparent the odds of Forcier coming in are slim to none.

If anything, if he lands at Manoa, it was all one hell of a poker face by all involved.

  199. d1shima June 16, 2011 1:19 pm

    😳

Forgot to post this for Al and A-house last night.

This was a U of U transfer who moved down in Division a few years ago. A-house might recognize the fella who stepped in at Utah for this guy (although he may not want to admit it)

I saw the same things in Guangzhou in 2000. I also saw roasted cats hanging next to roasted ducks in a window. Yum! 🙂

  204. Slugger June 16, 2011 1:55 pm

    TChahng,

I love 1000 year old eggs in my jook for breakfast, but no cats, foxes and dogs for me… Yuck!

I need to find a good place in HNL Chinatown for roast duck. My friend from the B.I. wants to eat duck while she’s here for a 3 wk. UH class.

    al?

  212. tommui June 16, 2011 2:27 pm

    #183 – or vice-versa…

Many locals (and Mainland types) who have eaten Peking duck in Beijing seem to prefer the Peking duck as done in Hawaii – less greasy and more crispy.

In our last trip in March, we had dinner with our nephew who was studying in Beijing and he came to the same conclusion – Hawaii PD is the best!

  215. warriorsun June 16, 2011 2:30 pm

I realize the tate forcier news has lost wind and folks have settled back to the normal summer doldrums.

still, im puzzled and intriqued by forcier’s comments. he was a no show @ miami after committing bc the florida venue was “too far from home”, forcier noted.

further, he added, “i want to play where it would be affordable for my parents to attend games”.

ok, that makes sense since his family resides in the san diego area. but, in the next breath, forcier mentions auburn as one of his schools of interest. hello! isnt auburn located in se alabama? arent they in the same timezone as miami?

naturally forcier mentions usc, sdsu, university of san diego, montana as well as several big 12 schools as well as tulsa and houston of cusa. who knows who else. btw, isnt hawaii the same distance from sd as miami, give or take a couple hundred miles?

the way this former wolverine navigates, it would be easier to search for caylee anthony’s gravesite than finding a recognizable football program “closer” to where his parents live.

finally, dont you just love his choice of usc?

the trojans are losing 30 schollies over three years and a favorite target for ncaa investigations. wonder what kiffin would say– “dont call us, we’ll call you”.

if tate forcier wants to close any gap he should focus on closing the distance that seperates adolescence from maturity. then, consider hawaii.

STEVEM #178 – Couldn’t make it yesterday to Happy Days but a table with only three people loaded up on 3 meat dishes and a whole bunch of dim sum baskets?…

Good grief, six baskets for just two of us means some left-overs!

  217. Iwonderwhytheyhateme June 16, 2011 2:37 pm

    Kazz,

Im hoping they can work something out. It didn’t seem like he completely dismissed the idea…he could have said that at the QB position everyone is spot on and we don’t need another.

Wish bobby would have asked him something along those lines.

All I know for sure is that our coaches believe in getting the best guys that Hawaii can get. Motivation for the guys on the team to keep working hard to keep their jobs secure. Also giving possible transfers and recruits the call out that Hawaii will give them an opportunity if they have what it takes.

  218. gigi-hawaii June 16, 2011 2:39 pm

I wish my subscription to the SA was $10 monthly. They made an adjustment a month or so ago. I was no happy with such a sizable increase. Especially since they couldn’t guarantee the rate for a year.

  225. Pake-expert June 16, 2011 3:53 pm

To # 204. The best roast duck in Hawaii by far is at Nam Fong Restaurant in Chinatown on Maunakea St. It’s next to the Chinese Candy Shop between Hotel and King St. It is Hong Kong style roast duck. Take out only, but during busy times, there is a line of people waiting to buy. Started by the legendary and innovative guy who owned Tin Tin Chop Suey (remember that?) and Fat Siu Lau (first restaurant in Hawaii to bring push cart dim sum). they used to get so busy during Christmas and new Years that the owner would pull the phone jack out because of all the people lining up to buy food that he couldn’t handle phone orders! that’s how good their food is.

  226. warriorsun June 16, 2011 4:07 pm

    jordan calhoun….

great speed (4.4), size (6′ 200#), good stats as a frosh (68/1100y), he is on the fbs radar, has indicated interest in hawaii and most importantly–calhoun has a redshirt year to burn making him available in 2012 or 2013. we lose royce after 2011 and darius bright will gone after 2012. looks like rolo wants to keep the cupboards stocked to reload every year while giving his frosh time to mature. support that recruiting-tactic. good planning.

i believe we recruited former warrior rb and hawaii prepster, west, from cod during jj’s regime. he was juco all-american and contributed to our O despite being a small-back package.

  227. Iwonderwhytheyhateme June 16, 2011 4:12 pm

    Mack said no to Forcier

  228. Wes'side Warrior June 16, 2011 4:14 pm

Howzit, everyone! Just a quick note to let you all know I’m back in the islands for a week. Not sure, but I might have a free hour tomorrow (Friday). I’ve got an old record album for A-House… if someone might be able to meet with me to eventually deliver it to him and Mrs. A-House.

Anyways, pretty busy schedule most days I’m here. Call or send me a message either here or on Facebook. I’ll try to log in daily, when time permits, to catch up.

Again, aloha and mahalo for everything!

  229. Kazz June 16, 2011 4:20 pm

When did Coach Mack flat out said “no” to Forcier?

  230. ai-eee-soos June 16, 2011 4:28 pm

ST just posted this in his “header” ….

” … Received this text today from quarterback Tate Forcier:

  231. Kazz June 16, 2011 4:33 pm

Forcier should turn on his spelling and grammar check function on his cell phone.

  232. chawan_cut June 16, 2011 4:33 pm

    kazz,

1420. sports animals always bug him for a scoop. and coach mack didn’t mention forcier by name, but did say michigan and the guy on the front page yesterday. so i guess that’s legal. he did mention that they’re happy where they are now and that some people aren’t always the right fit. and they have to review each player’s interest by talking to previous coaches, etc.

  233. Da Punchbowl Kid June 16, 2011 4:35 pm

    #231-

Yeah. When did Coach Mack flat out say no to Forcier? Proof, please, my good man.

  234. gigi-hawaii June 16, 2011 4:37 pm

I wonder if Mack read yesterday’s WB blog.

  235. Kazz June 16, 2011 4:38 pm

That’s essentially what Coach Mack was quoted in the paper yesterday though…

Of course they are happy where they are “NOW”… 😉 😉 😉

  236. Kazz June 16, 2011 4:39 pm

Eh… I’m probably reading too much into it.

It does remind me of how former UH President David McClain said that “as of TODAY, Herman Frazier is our athletic director.” 😆 😆

  237. Da Punchbowl Kid June 16, 2011 4:39 pm

So ya think its a done deal, c_c?

  238. Iwonderwhytheyhateme June 16, 2011 4:39 pm

    DPK,

You want something in writing? If so, I require a service fee to get that.

If not, take it for what it’s worth hearing it on 1420 Da Animals.

Truth is stranger than fiction but consider this guy Forcier to be DOA.

  239. Kazz June 16, 2011 4:40 pm

I always felt that if coaches use blogs to get their info or whatever, then it’s a BAD sign…

  240. Slugger June 16, 2011 4:43 pm

    Pake-Expert,

I remember Tin Tin Chop Suey. Ok, I know where Nam Fong is. I’ll go pick some up. Thanks. I think my friend wanted to eat somewhere in Chinatown, but we can eat dim sum, or something else. I’ll get duck for the weekend party.

    chawan_cut,

Sound like Forcier is not being considered. Thanks, Coach Mack!

  241. Slugger June 16, 2011 4:49 pm

    Wes’side Warrior and A-House family,

I gave the A-House family a bunch of sweaters & sweater vests to take to the Army game. They could only take some of them. Maybe they could give you the rest of the stash for you to take back to Michigan. Probably need a wash since they were in the SSC for a while, but you could use them back East.

Hey, A-House, Mrs. A-House, Midori7! Can you guys do that if you see Wes’side Warrior, please. Thanks!

And midnight might be able to use a couple, too. Leftovers? Take them to Vegas, please.

  242. wafan June 16, 2011 4:51 pm

wafan – what type of pranks did the students pull on you?

  246. wafan June 16, 2011 4:56 pm

Geez. Says he wants to be a Warrior. Then the guy vehemently denies contacting Hawai’i. Today he is excited and sends a text to Mr. Tsai.

    Sybil? Is that you?

  247. Kazz June 16, 2011 4:57 pm

    DOA?

    Dead on ARRIVAL?

    So he is coming? 😆 😆 😆 😆

  248. chawan_cut June 16, 2011 4:58 pm

I think its a done deal. Its cool that a big named recruit is interested in UH, and every recruit is a gamble. We’ll never know the true reasons why he wasn’t a good fit because they can’t comment on it. The coaches just don’t make decisions without doing research. That’s not the way they operate. Just by seeing how they prepare for games show how much effort is put into breaking down everything into the finest of details. If the coaches don’t believe he’s a good fit, then who’s to say we know better. Its their offense, their playbooks. Look how many people wanted Masoli to transfer here last year. That would’ve been a disaster. And yes, if coaches come on blogs or listen to every couch coach fan that calls a radio show, we’d better be worried that the coach has no trust in his own decision making process. Again, we can only wait and see how this all pans out, but I put my faith in the coaches to lead our team to success and that we have very good players waiting in the wings to show their stuff when its their time.

  249. Hawaiianbod June 16, 2011 4:59 pm

    🙂

  250. wafan June 16, 2011 5:03 pm

    HBod . . .

Kind of funny. My entire 1st period class walked in sat down and acted as if it were a regular school day for them. Took me a second to realize they were not supposed to be in class — should have been in graduation practice instead. I do not know how they “escaped” en masse to show up in class.

Then they practiced their last prank on me. As they exited each gave me a ping pong ball as they shook my hand. Last one out said the entire class was going to give a ball to the principal at graduation. Funnier than pennies. The balls kept escaping and were all over the place. That stage is going to be covered.

    HA!

  251. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 16, 2011 5:06 pm

    #249,

    Well…his letter was DOA. hahaha.

  252. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 16, 2011 5:07 pm

    #245,

Yes it was! First time in a long time I have been so active about such a subject.

It’s again time to put on my tin foil hat and crawl back into my bunker.

  253. Guy in the office June 16, 2011 5:09 pm

McMackiin indicated that the coaches did their due diligence on Forcier — which is all anyone, a casual follower or a fanatic — can ask. Maybe it’s time to turn the page …

  254. bigislandkurt June 16, 2011 5:09 pm

There is no way for any of our coaches to believe that Forcier would not be a good fit. Although they will not admit it, WINNING trumps everything. After Moniz, none of the QB’s we have can match Forcier’s talents and experience. Graves got potential. But going into the 2012 season -which could be our toughest to date — would you rather go into it with a QB with “potential” or a QB who already got it? Easy answer if you like winning.

I’m glad UH is in the mix. I got a good feeling that Tate will eventually be a Warrior.

    BIK

  255. bigislandkurt June 16, 2011 5:10 pm

Colt might be our greatest recruiter on this one! 🙂

Re: Coaches Taking Cues from the Fans

I have no evidence to prove this off course…But it felt like the first year when Mack was here…….He listened to the fans/blogs and actually did follow through on some suggestions.

One example comes to mind is the “stretching before the game on the field”…Remember it was made a huge issue (I brought it up in post after post along with many many others) that we never stretch on the field….Somehow the next game to my surprise I see the team stretching on the field together.

Coincidence maybe…but I was a bit afraid of where exactly he got that idea from. LOL

**My Final Comments on Forcier (I hope)**

I preface all of these comments by saying I know sorta just as much about recruiting as Mack knows about not giving his players and coaches *credit*

    1) If its true that DaPorce got passed up, I am a sorta disappointed. I really wanted to see if this guy could make it as a Warrior.

    2) I think sitting out 1 year would have given him the necessary time to refocus his life and get his butt in gear.

    3) Dick Tomey would have been an excellent mentor for him.

    4) I am pretty sure there isn’t an anointed QB for 2012, all remaining eligible QB’s will need to fight for place. What is one more?

    5) 2012 is going to be a walk through hell…an experienced and skilled play caller is going to be needed. Experience+Skill vs. Potential+Skill?

    5) Could he be divisive? Sure, but last year we had some BravoTv, Orange County worthy divisive drama but the Warrior Nation is resilient and we got through it.

  263. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2011 5:38 pm

I think people, especially Iwonder… need to relax and let the process take over.

It is a process, and it is in the infancy.

And no matter how much of a fan somebody is, no, he/she doesn’t get a vote in the decision making. Neither do reporters.

So just sit back, and wait to see how things develop or don’t develop.

    This isn’t Watergate.

  264. Kazz June 16, 2011 5:41 pm

    The iWonder?

Does it make a difference if you are a fan who also a huge booster? I am thinking some of these boosters can call some shots or at least influence them.

  268. Kazz June 16, 2011 5:49 pm

Yeah I do. It’s frickin HUGE.

Might leave Android and wander over to explore the 5th installment of the iPhone on Verizon though….

Should be out in a few months.

ONLY because a lot of the upgrades to the iPhone resemble that of the Android OS:

-Status bar notifications like Android phones.

-Over the air system updates – this is apparently due to the fact that Apple is able to offer this now that the iPhone is on Verizon. Apparently AT&T’s network wasn’t good enough to properly distribute over the air system updates to the iPhones, but now they are on Verizon… VOILA!

Then again, I don’t upgrade until Feb 2012 so something else for sure will come along. Who knows?

Besides, the 4th iPhone DEVICE itself is the best on the market. They fixed a lot of things. So we shall see.

    ST $10 a month????

    What is up with that???

I have been a subscriber for a long time. First they shrink the paper then they raise the price to where I now pay $18.83 (my last bill).

On top of that this past Monday they sent me the Monday paper then on Tuesday they gave me the Monday paper again. I called them and they wanted to send me the Tuesday paper on Wednesday to which I said no thankyou so they credited it instead.

  270. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2011 5:51 pm

I think vonAppen would have been OK if he stuck to his original blueprint.

He wanted to install the West Coast Offense, which was the rage at the time, and he brought in two guys experienced in that system — Guy Benjamin and Ken Margerum. Margerum owns a playbook given to him by the offense’s originator, Bill Walsh. He also wanted to implement an aggressive defense.

But then there were the off-field battles, especially with the administration, and Margerum left and Benjamin was re-assigned. He brought in Wally English who was, well, an interesting character. And then English was released, and Don Lindsey moved over from defense.

So there were three offenses in three years, and players who just didn’t fit in the schemes. I remember guys like Chuck Thompson being moved over to play offensive line, then starting a couple of weeks later.

VonAppen was obviously a smart guy, but for such an aggressive personality, there was another side to him that wasn’t ever really comfortable being a head coach. I think he was an introvert in an extrovert’s body.

  271. Kazz June 16, 2011 5:52 pm

    iwwthm,

In Hawaii Nei, we get “Da Hui” (what is plural for “hui”?).

Anyway, they don’t even have to be part of the university. But they can influence others to get their way. Or try…..

Predjudice and ignorance carries a long way….

    (I think Im getting off topic here…) 😎 😎

  277. Kazz June 16, 2011 5:59 pm

I really don’t know how it would get “better”. T-Mobile was bad enough as it is.

Yeah T-Mobile can brag that they were the FIRST to have “Wi-Fi calling” available, but that’s because they NEEDED IT due to a lack of national cellular coverage!!!!

I don’t know what software or hardware AT&T is going to acquire if anything at all.

  278. tommui June 16, 2011 6:01 pm

Well, the latest communication from TF – just posted above reminds me of the song:

Is you is or is you not my baby?

  279. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2011 6:02 pm

Boosters don’t get to call shots.

One of the former UH greats, Marco Johnson, has done quite well. If I’m not mistaken, he now runs/owns a college. He’s got a lot of money, and he is very generous in helping the football program.

But his son didn’t get a scholarship from UH, and didn’t get any playing time. His son is a really good guy, and he ended up getting a degree, and will be a success in life. But that doesn’t buy you a seat in the war room.

Coaches make recruiting/strategy decisions based on what will help the program. While some of their strategies might mirror some suggestions, we’re talking about people whose livelihoods depend on research and studying.

A columnist today wrote about how he hoped UH would do due diligence in checking out a prospect. Of course, they’re going to do that. If Rick Carlisle were available, they would do a background check. As I mentioned earlier, for these summer camps, they did a recent background check on George Lumpkin, and he’s been involved with the program for nearly four decades.

  284. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2011 6:20 pm

I think the thing about Hawaii is there are no big boosters.

Don Murphy is a great guy who raised a lot of money and worked his okole off. But he’s not a wealthy guy.

There are no Fortune 500 companies in Hawaii.

I think UH has a lot of great supporters who give what they can give and root as well as any other fans. But the bottom line is the cost of living is high here, and there just isn’t a lot of money to give.

  285. Stephen Tsai June 16, 2011 6:27 pm

    Re: Subscriptions.

Actually, I have no idea what other people pay.

    I pay something like $9 or $10 a month.

And while there has been talk about a pay-per-view plan, nothing has been set in stone yet. So maybe it happens this summer, maybe it doesn’t.

But that’s the trend in the business. Few things are free anymore.

  286. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 16, 2011 6:27 pm

    #286,

If I am not wrong I think the big money (w/in UH) comes mostly from corporations like FHB etc. Or that might be separate from a ‘booster’ and under the corporate partner thing where they get advertising for it etc.

  290. Shoko June 16, 2011 6:53 pm

Not really sure about T0ate Forcier becoming a Warrior. Not sure we should waste time sending him to Hawaii for a visit. Just getting a bad vibe about this kid.

    Austin’s a smart kid. 😉

  291. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 16, 2011 6:54 pm

I’m curious if guys like Jobs and Omidyar who have no direct relation to UH but spent their formative years here in Hawaii ever considered or did donate to UH Athletics.

  292. Shoko June 16, 2011 6:55 pm

Card counters don’t last very long in Vegas. They eventually get 86’ed.

    According to an AP report:

    — After adjusting for inflation, total expenses for FBS schools increased by 1 percent in 2009-10 over the previous year and decreased by 8 percent at Football Championship Subdivision schools. Division I schools without football had a 9 percent increase in expenses.

    — Median revenues for FBS schools increased by 9.5 percent and jumped 14 percent for FCS schools. Non-football schools saw revenue drop by 5.1 percent.

    — Overall, the median revenue for FBS schools was about $48.3 million, compared with FCS schools ($13,189,000) and non-football schools ($11,077,000).

    — The net operating results show FBS schools are losing nearly $9.5 million on average, compared with FCS schools that are losing slightly more than $9.1 million and non-football schools at approximately $8.6 million.

    — In all three NCAA divisions, total athletic department expenditures continue to hold at about 5 percent of the share of a school’s overall budget. That number that drops to 1 percent among FBS schools and 4 percent at FCS schools and those without football when net deficits, rather than overall expenses, are part of the equation.

    Okay, time for schleep!

The effort to get Far East athletes who maybe able to compete at the D1 level and to garner exposure and create new fan support.

UH needs to get the Far East tourists that comes to Hawaii to attend the games. Have them picked up by a bus, given a meal, offered a tour of the facilities, etc. A small charge to them costing UH very little. Seeds that are planted by these tourist who attend may just germinate itself tenfold in creating future fans and future athletes for UH.

I see they’re saying now, officially and in the mainstream media, that diabetes can be fixed by dieting. This has been suggested for years, though, in the underground press, that and more too; some people say that cancer can be cured, or at the very least slowed down, by low-carb dieting. A few years ago that would have been unthinkable, but so would the diabetes cure. We are indeed what we eat, apparently. How much more has been kept from us, I wonder?

Really? Have you ever seen how are you affected in the meat sector? Hunting and fishing for food is far more humane than what cows, pigs, and chickens go through in order that people to eat. A free of charge life in the wild delivered to an abrupt end is often a pretty sweet deal for almost any animal destined to turn into food. Lydia Chisem
