Arceneaux hired as OCSports analyst

Darnell Arceneaux, a former Saint Louis School head coach and star quarterback, will be the color analyst for OCSports’ football telecasts this season.

Arceneaux replaces Darren Hernandez in the booth. The NCAA has restrictions on conversations between college and high school coaches. Last year, OCSports did not interview Greg McMackin during the game. This year, Chow has agreed to a request to answer a couple of questions before going into the locker room at halftime. That arrangement restricts Hernandez, who is Kapolei High’s football coach. Arceneaux is not coaching at any high school or college this season.

Robert Kekaula returns for a second season as play-by-play announcer.

In case you were wondering, ย former Warriors Royce Pollard (J-E-T-S, Jets! Jets! Jets!), Aaron Brown (Rams) and Vaughn Meatoga ย (Raiders) will earn $5,700 a week as practice-squad players.

If they last the entire season, which is 17 weeks, they will earn $96,900.

The AP voters think UH played well enough.

USC dropped to No. 2, behind Alabama.

  14. 310warriorfan September 4, 2012 6:50 am

Despite the score on Saturday, the team showed real promise for an exciting run this season. The coaching staff really has instilled some discipline and the team seems to be doing as well as can be expected fundamentally with the change in schemes from last year. Lots of players with lots of potential! GO WARRIORS!

Interesting fact from Phil Steele…UH has the second best compiled won-lost record over the past ten-years among the teams in the Mountain West. Only BSU has a better record.

    Go Warriors!

  27. d1shima September 4, 2012 8:03 am

    from NaKoa Mike’s report

USC coaches had intimate knowledge of factors not ever filmed before, so enemy eyes are everywhere.

  36. Annoddah Dave September 4, 2012 8:27 am

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:

    for Pomai @#11, here is my take: Baseball-Derek Tatsuno; Basketball-Tom Henderson; Football-Niko Noga, Golf-idk; Swimming-idk; Tennis-idk; Volleyball-Yuval Katz.

Note: these are the ones I saw play in person. Others before my time idk.

  37. Warrior4Life September 4, 2012 8:34 am

#27 – regarding that, my opinion is that UH should close all practices. It will be tough for Warrior fans who likes to attend them. The practice field is open so it’s also tough to keep enemy eyes from seeing what’s going on. I wish they had a closed practice facility. I don’t know if it will help but maybe Coach can open practice for 15-20 minutes then close it the rest of the time?

  38. macaroniandcheese September 4, 2012 8:35 am

@pomai..i will date myself a bit but

    bsb-Tatsuno or kolten wong

    bkb-Chris Gaines or Anthony Carter

FB- Jesse Sapolu, Ron Hall (who no one remembers played tight end at Tampa Bay for several years) or Al Noga (who everyone hates to list because of his character)

    Golf–??

    Swimming-Leleikis (sp?)

    Tennis-Kop

VB most would say yuval katz but I won’t put him cause he was ineligible and his stats don’t count…I think Allen Allen put Men’s volleyball on the map for all those great guys who followed.

Yep I am an 80’s generation member

  39. Kekoa September 4, 2012 8:35 am

    Pomai –

    #36, ditto for me.

  42. d1shima September 4, 2012 8:40 am

    W4L,

Coach said that he is continually working towards that.

In the buildup to the Warriors’ game in the Swamp, I recall reading about Urban Meyer doing something similar to what you described when he was at Florida. Reporters had access to about the first 15-20 minutes of practice then everyone had to leave.

Daily reports about players warming up then only speculation about what happened after that.

  43. Kekoa September 4, 2012 8:51 am

Pomai ~ Deitre Collins for best female VB player and here is why:

    http://archives.starbulletin.com/content/Deitre_Collins_named_to_volleyball_hall_of_fame

  44. jm2375 September 4, 2012 8:52 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

    Happy sorta Monday.

mac&cheese – Yuval was never ineligible. You’re thinking of Costas Theocharidis. I also think you got Kop in the wrong sport. If it’s Brandon Kop, he played golf.

  45. WarriorNY September 4, 2012 9:07 am

    That’s a Salas article I posted above… Sorry I clicked enter before I finished…

  46. alohawa September 4, 2012 9:10 am

#38 – I think you’re confusing UV with Costas. Hands down, UV is the best UH mens vball player ever. the popularity of men’s volleyball in hawaii exploded during the UV years.

  47. WarriorNY September 4, 2012 9:28 am

    For Pomai,

    I don’t know baseball very well… but

    Volleyball – Yuval Katz…

    Basketball – Anthony Carter…

Football – Colt Brennan… If you are talking exclusively UH Football and not including Pros… (Heisman finalist two years in a row pretty much settles any debates)

If you count the pros, Sapolu would probably get my vote. Though, I think Bess will pass him by the end of his career…

  48. Thanks for the auspicious writeup. It actually was once a amusement account it. Look complicated to far added agreeable from you! By the way, how could we keep up a correspondence?

  50. kev-1 September 4, 2012 9:33 am

Still smiling at the fact that USC fell though.

  52. WarriorNY September 4, 2012 9:36 am

  53. Hodad September 4, 2012 9:48 am

    Maybe, Bama is underrated.

  54. d1shima September 4, 2012 9:51 am

Former power house that tried to switch its identity with Rodriquez, and is now struggling to get it back. They need to get rid of the spread and their QB. He is a stellar athlete, but that isn’t what Michigan football is about.

  59. PolyMom September 4, 2012 10:14 am

Hey who knows in two years when the NCAA is finished investigating The McKnight Scandal we might get the W against USC last weekend.

    USC News

Former player Armond Armstead suing USC and Dr. James Tibone. Yikes he is one of my Docs!

The McKnight Scandal is now in full swing with NCAA. Money two cars. Hmmm…just like Reggie Bush!

Matt Barkley got a good talking to per my BIL for the comment he made about scoring 100 points against Hawaii. Let me say this, if he could have scored 100 points he would have. There is no love lost between Kiffen and Chow.

Warriors YOU did great! So proud of YOU!

  60. lava September 4, 2012 10:14 am

Seems like the fans give the team a passing grade against USC, but Coach Chow wants the players to remember the terrible feeling of a lousy defeat. Why should there be a different standard?

  61. lava September 4, 2012 10:17 am

USC was going to drop in the polls if USC had won 100-0, because UH is not in the same class as Michigan. I don’t think UH gets any credit for the change in the polls. Credit Alabama significantly outplaying Michigan.

  62. Haleakala September 4, 2012 10:20 am

    Ignore negativity.

  63. tommui September 4, 2012 10:21 am

    #67 Lava:

Probably because we are not playing.

Probably somewhat akin to praising students who got a C+ in their exams when we expected them to fail.

Somewhat like teachers who expected the students to do better than they did.

  64. koakane September 4, 2012 10:24 am

    I so bad

  66. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 4, 2012 10:31 am

Under Jones and probably Mack, time of possession wasn’t a factor. With Chow it matters. It looked “funny” but I did enjoy watching the multiple formations and snaps from under center. I can’t wait to see more of the redzone plays.

  67. biber hapฤฑ September 4, 2012 10:42 am

Excellent post. I was checking continuously this weblog and I am inspired! Extremely helpful info particularly the remaining part ๐Ÿ™‚ I take care of such info a lot. I was seeking this certain information for a very long time. Thanks and good luck.

  68. Buffoman September 4, 2012 10:45 am

I agree with Mac&Cheese. Yuval and Costas came after Allen Allen got Klum and then the Stanley rocking for men’s v-ball. Yuval and Costas were terrific and should be noted, but it was Allen Allen who started and should be given props.

For baseball it was Tats and Gerald Ako. If Coach Les did not get those two guys to commit and play for UH, we’d still be playing in the “quarry” with us maybe on a bit more aluminum stand and not much of a stadium.

Basketball well you have to take the fab 5 as a group. It was so much fun watching them play. Our refs back then were also pretty good (wink, wink as some calls were very interesting).

My favorite Fb guy has to be Niko Noga. He was truly a disruption for just about all of the visiting teams.

  69. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 4, 2012 10:46 am

    lava,

it’s a coaches job to be critiquing his players and to set the tone. whether that be positive or negative, is up to the captain. as fans, some of us remain 110% positive, others 110% negative and the rest (probably most) somewhere in the middle. to each their own.

  70. Kaneohe Resident September 4, 2012 10:47 am

UH Baseball: Derek Tatsuno…several years ago, Derek was named NCAA’s Baseball Player of the CENTURY!

UH Basketball: Tom Henderson…only player on the USA Olympic team to be from the junior college ranks, all the other players were graduating seniors. Never saw any UH player steal the ball from opposing guards bringing down the ball as often as him. Smoothest player ever to put on a UH uniform.

Men’s Volleyball: Yuval Katz…responsible for the start of the glory years of UH volleyball. Responsible for selling out the SSC multiple times. First time UH volleyball cleared $1M. In fact, first time men’s volleyball ever became profitable…anywhere in the country. With all UCLA’s titles, I don’t think they ever got close to $1M in one season.

  71. madeinhawaii September 4, 2012 10:59 am

    iwonderwhytheyhateme:

I think Time of possession was important to JJ and Mack when up against a substantially physically superior Offensive team. The wear and tear on the Warrior Defense was observable and demoralizing.

  72. RedZone September 4, 2012 11:01 am

    Baseball – Tats

    Basketball – Judy Mosely

    Football – Niko Noga

    Volleyball – Deitre Collins

  74. rich2176 September 4, 2012 11:59 am

From What I Remember on Saturday:

Great tailgate. Met Mike (from OC), LizK (who was with Abe’s sister), Don Weir, Iceman Kelly, and the ever-so-lovely Faye Wai. I think there were many more, but that’s what I remember. The band, Oahu was excellent.

Winning the autographed football with about 30+ former FB players was sweet. Many of the greats who left us with memories signed the ball. I may end up donating it to Na Koa for some sort of a silent auction item. The question asked of the crowd “How many years has UH been playing football?” I was wearing my 100 year anniversary UH FB shirt and did the math…

Anyway, there seemed to be a completely different energy from the Warriors than we have seen in the past. They never hung their heads or gave up. I’m looking forward to a good Warrior season.

  75. Wes'side Warrior September 4, 2012 12:00 pm

    Howzit, everyone!

Good stuff, Pomai! Here’s my favorites:

Baseball – Derek Tatsuno (Cory Ishigo was also fun to watch)

Basketball – Tom Henderson (Jerome Freeman was also a “big” favorite)

Football – Jesse Sapolu ( so many more to add here)

Golf – TJ Kua (Sorry, the only name I remember. Didn’t follow too closely.)

Swimming – Nick Folker (Although… we’ve had some great European swimmers…)

Tennis – Andreas Weber (Sorry, the only name I remember. Didn’t follow too closely.)

    Volleyball – Yuval Katz (UuuuVeeeeee!!!!!)

  77. HawaiiMongoose September 4, 2012 12:05 pm

The question was about men’s sports.

    Football – Jesse Sapolu

    Baseball – Derek Tatsuno

    Basketball – Tom Henderson

    Volleyball – Yuval Katz

    Swimming – ?

    Tennis – ?

Warrior Mojo ~ The AP voters prolly lost their lunch listening to the Fox announcers fawn all over the Sputoons.

They didn’t hear them mention that they were playing Hawaii until late in the 1st qtr., and Barkley’s quotes about the 100 pts surely had to make them ill.

I also think it made a major splash with the national media. (reminds me of the Progressive Insurance commercial, “Uh-oh, Flo-bot is broken!”).

  82. Bowwar September 4, 2012 12:45 pm

USC will get their just rewards when the Oregon Ducks beat them…I’ve never met a more “arrogant” program and fans…As Attorney Green characterized them (i.e. Lane Kiffin) on the BC show, “totally classless.” Not punting on 4th down several times and contesting plays showed USC wanted to “run it up” on UH. I hope the NCAA shuts USC down if they are found with further violations…

And I loved seeing the Warrior Alumni at the TG… especially our always huggable RGM!!!

    Whoosh… Hiho!

  88. Warrior Expat September 4, 2012 1:22 pm

Mahalo to all the Tsaiko’s who helped us out with tailgate tips. We had a great time at the game!

Was sitting in the UH section. Lots of great and loyal fans. My only complaint is that some UH fans started yelling other UH fans (who were standing and cheering) quite angrily to sit down and be quiet. After much of this complaining, the enthusiastic fans reluctantly sat down.

The future of this program’s fan base is in real peril if fans are going to have their enthusiasm stifled like that. Many of the bigger schools’ stadiums are standing room only. Even at the Coliseum, the contrast was stark: the rabid SC fans were out of their seats nearly the whole game cheering their team on. Can you even imagine anyone in the SC section telling the fans to “sit down?”

Still, it was a great time. Highlight was probably towards the end of the game, after UH had stopped USC’s final drive, and two or three guys in the UH section started leading the section in a chant of “beat the spread!”

Any other thoughts and impressions from those Warrior faithful who were lucky enough to attend?

d1- It was a stretch to remember even that much…Was a LOONG weekend – golf Friday and plenty of greenies. Game Saturday and plenty of greenies. Golf Sunday w/ Fukuzaki and plenty more greenies (and shots!!). Golf yesterday…liver needed a rest…

bowwar – totally agree with you. The 4th down stuff got really old after a while. Unless the place kicker (who was injured) is also their punter.

I’m sorry if this is a no-no…but this is what our dear beloved blog leader

    wrote Feb 22, last year:

“Menโ€™s volleyball player Yuval Katz, basketball player Anthony Carter and football and track and field standout Richard Furtado were formally introduced today as the newest members of the University of Hawaii Sports Circle of Honor.

Furtado was a star in the 1930s and played on the UH football team that went 6-0 in 1935. He threw a touchdown pass in the Rainbowsโ€™ 14-0 win over Cal to cap the season.

Katz and Carter were the biggest reasons for sold-out crowds in the 1990s.

โ€œWe went from a few hundred to 8 to 9,000 per game, โ€ athletic director Jim Donovan said of Katzโ€™s impact on volleyball attendance.

Carter had a similar affect on basketball attendance, as he and backcourt-mate Alika Smith led UH to back-to-back NIT appearances and wins over Indiana and Kansas.

Carter, who was just traded from the Denver Nuggets to the New York Knicks, was represented today by Jackson Wheeler, the assistant coach who recruited him to Hawaii.

Befitting his nature as a player and person, Wheeler said Carter told him to acknowledge his UH teammates.

โ€œAC said donโ€™t forget the other guys,โ€ Wheeler said.

My all-time UH basketball starting five: G Anthony Carter, G Tom Henderson, F Bob Nash, F Reggie Cross C Mel Werts. 6th man Predrag Savovic.”

Tsai, a man ahead of our time…great blog, great read…

In 2006, I had a rolled up newspaper thrown at my head because me and my friends kept standing up after every UH touchdown.

The ONLY time a true collegiate atmosphere is present is at the 11pm basketball games on that ESPN college hoops marathon

Put 2 and 2 together and its easy to understand why that is at 11pm.

#96 Kevin… I was at the Purdue game in 2006 and the place was going crazy as we were coming from behind to win that game. I actually heard this individual ask security at the stadium to tell people around him to sit down and be quiet because he couldn’t see the game…While I understand his predicament, it is a dang football game for goodness sake.

How can? What do these people expect to happen during a ball game? I was at a baseball game this past year, UH vs. Oregon, and there was a fan who was entertaining all of us with his witty (but clean) heckling of the Ducks. Midway through the game, an usher came by to tell him to quiet down, because a fan had made a complaint about his loud cheering! The greatest feeling is after an exciting comeback victory, having people ask you what happened to your voice.

  117. Kevin September 4, 2012 3:12 pm

It is no fun. No fun for recruits and their families to sit at Aloha Stadium and the majority of the crowd is acting like they are at a funeral.

When the recruits donโ€™t come or donโ€™t want to stay home because of that, then the program suffers, then the fanbase has a hard time cheeringโ€ฆ.

The cycle of fun-busters is complete, but the saimin and headphones are ready!!!

  118. Kevin September 4, 2012 3:14 pm

    Random thought:

I should enter those โ€œbest seats in the houseโ€ drawing at the Stan Sheriff Center and if I win, I want to be shown on the big screen DECLINING the food that comes with the seats behind the Wahine bench.

Would like to see what happens then.

  119. Ipu Man September 4, 2012 3:15 pm

  122. kev-1 September 4, 2012 3:18 pm

Not to mention the traffic that home games bring. Nothing like sitting in traffic to then sit in the stands with a bunch of rowdy whipper snappers who can’t control themselves. Can’t they see that I’m also trying to listen to the game on my antenna radio. Ugh, they should just completely cancel football games all together.

  123. Shoko September 4, 2012 3:19 pm

Yep, wife tends to ask alot of questions during a game. I don’t mind answering, but when its series of questions over one play, then it gets irritating. I once advised her to write her questions on a piece of paper and I would be happy to answer them at halftime. She said thats too much work. Sheesh.

  124. kev-1 September 4, 2012 3:21 pm

My grandma used to be around when we were watching the game and all of a sudden she would start cheering or yelling . . . at the replay.

  125. madeinhawaii September 4, 2012 3:31 pm

I know, every time I go to a game, I lose my voice. I’m glad my wife isn’t bothered by my loud cheers and jeers. And the fans around me have a hard time tell me, a sixty-year older to shut up…. might give me a heart attack.

  126. (Jesse) James September 4, 2012 3:41 pm

#120 Ipu man…As kev-1 stated….Please ask the people in the Ala Moana/Ala Wai areas to tone it down…I can barely watch the game at Aloha Stadium with them screaming….LOL

  129. gigi-hawaii September 4, 2012 4:09 pm

Shoko, you should tell your wife to listen to the game on the radio while she is watching the game. It really helps to understand what is going on.

  130. Buffoman September 4, 2012 4:11 pm

Maybe they could be creative with season ticket sales the next time. Sell tickets to those who don’t want to stand in one area. That way, they get what they want. If there is overwhelming number of “hand sitters” not a bad thing; at least they go and support the team. They (UH) can call this seating area, “the Sand Bar”. (BTW: Sand bar would be between the 30 yard lines as I am assuming these folks are the old folks who have been long time supporters). Everyone else gets the other sections.

The area is called the “sand Bar” because every time the wave come, it going die out cause no body going stand up.

  131. gigi-hawaii September 4, 2012 4:13 pm

the sand bar in kaneohe doesn’t allow booze anymore. was pretty quiet over the weekend cuz people stayed away.

  134. greenthumb September 4, 2012 4:28 pm

Buffoman, “sandbar” is the perfect name, and you’re right, they are taking the time and spending money and effort to support the team — even if it’s in a different way than what we would choose. Sure, if they are longtime ticket-holders, put them up front, and then resurrect the special “super rooters” ID sticker and limited seating area and get the most eager student fans into good seats in a special section along the sidelines behind those seats.

Back in ’89, My brother and I went to a Notre Dame/USC game in South Bend. We made our way into the stadium about 45 minutes before game time and sat in the student section. There were a few people standing here and there. Slowly the crowd built up around us.

About 10 minutes before game time it soon dawned on us we’d have to stand the entire game!

    FRICK!!

Best yet, as soon as the halftime gun went off the ENTIRE stadium sat down leaving only two clueless spectators still standing.

    Sheesh!

Had to ack like we had to go bathroom…

  174. SteveM September 4, 2012 9:05 pm

OK, after 2100… I was scanning a joke site and saw this one on “Company Policy”. Kinda long somewhat interesting…

    Company Policy

Start with a cage containing five apes.

In the cage, hang a banana on a string and put stairs under it. Before long, an ape will go to the stairs and start to climb towards the banana. As soon as he touches the stairs, spray all of the apes with cold water. After a while, another ape makes an attempt with the same result – all the apes are sprayed with cold water. This continues through several more attempts.

Pretty soon, when another ape tries to climb the stairs, the other apes all try to prevent it. Now, turn off the cold water. Remove one ape from the cage and replace it with a new one. The new ape sees the banana and wants to climb the stairs. To his horror, all of the other apes attack him. After another attempt and attack, he knows that if he tries to climb the stairs, he will be assaulted.

Next, remove another of the original five apes and replace it with a new one. The newcomer goes to the stairs and is attacked. The previous newcomer takes part in the punishment with enthusiasm. Again, replace a third original ape with a new one. The new one makes it to the stairs and is attacked as well. Two of the four apes that beat him have no idea why they were not permitted to climb the stairs, or why they are participating in the beating of the newest ape.

After replacing the fourth and fifth original apes, all the apes, which have been sprayed with cold water, have been replaced. Nevertheless, no ape ever again approaches the stairs. Why not? Because that’s the way they’ve always done it and that’s the way it’s always been around here.

And that’s how company policy begins….

After replacing the fourth and fifth original apes, all the apes, which have been sprayed with cold water, have been replaced. Nevertheless, no ape ever again approaches the stairs. Why not? Because that’s the way they’ve always done it and that’s the way it’s always been around here.

you always coming up with the mind boggling thought provoking comments.

so, you gonna start the ball rolling in the public comments section by telling

them you wished you had her report first so you could comment on her

    report,

…but ifn you gonna stand back and fling em,

i’d use da stinger missle approach. aim for timing of her decision to put da bruddaz on maternity leave, and at dat time didn’t she already know that it was her team, her lega babuuz, who wen make and sign da contract for UH, and JD neva put UH out da $200K?

AI’m thinking the good fun going start about half hour after the end of her report,m when people have a small kine chance to digest da wispful thinking.

again, could be she was trying fo back up Rockne, who was trying fo back up Coach Chow and that mindset. If thats what is going on, can’t fault her for that.

I’d rather have her, rockne and Chow than a Manini led song group anyday ah da week.

no can dat kine song contest, no can. das da difference between Chow and Mack. Chow’s gang no quit, no sir, no quit, an dat i like! that counts for alot!

A powerful share, I simply given this onto a colleague who was doing a little evaluation on this. And he in truth purchased me breakfast because I found it for him.. smile. So let me reword that: Thnx for the deal with! But yeah Thnkx for spending the time to debate this, I really feel strongly about it and love studying more on this topic. If potential, as you develop into expertise, would you mind updating your blog with more details? It is highly helpful for me. Massive thumb up for this blog post!

Rich… I am so used to Hawai’i Pono’i after the Star Spangled Banner that it seems so odd not to hear it at an away game…

Expat. Underscored and Underlined! On the USC side (90% of the stadium), it was all standing, yelling, gesturing and dancing to the band all game long.

When I hiked over to the Hawaii section just before kickoff, except for a few brave souls, it was difficult to get footage of the fans cheering “Go Warriors” for the camera! Politeness is always a good quality but politeness at a fb game, to me, is cheering loudly for your team and being silent about the other team.

Perhaps my Abe shirt colors threw people off, but I wore my UH pareau all game long and go no criticism from the USC faithful.

Whatever the case, the Warriors played like men and it will be great to see the fans cheer like they mean it in Aloha Stadium this season!

    Have a great day, everyone!

Good morning! I am all for positivity as much as possible, but we need to monitor the system.

Must-read story by Ferd Lewis this morning about the Wonder insurance that includes an attorney’s and an insurance professional’s take on the insurance Peyton was supposed to be buying from the concert. One of the comments by the attorney helps put things in perspective: Hawaii’s real problem seems to be in making sure that they were dealing with the right people,” Bickerton said. “And that’s a failure of judgment, not the failure of the contract. The basic problem comes from people not investigating who they are dealing with, which is a fundamental part of business.”

I am neutral as far as appointing RF as the AD.

However, it would seem to me that the pushing forward with the Selection Committee and the $$$ for a Headhunter would be a waste of time and money should RF be ultimately selected – and this is assuming RF is going to be an applicant for the job.

Perhaps the best course is to have RF just say that if nominated, I will decline and if selected, I will not serve and then left the Selection people and the Headhunter do their job.

Of course we could always ask RF to finish the unexpired contract/term of JD and go from there – that way we would not have the feeling of urgency.

    Just a thought.
