The latest winner is …

 jason.JPG

Jason!
He gets two tickets (front-row, baby!!!) to Tuesday night’s finals.
My bud Christie drew the winner’s name using chopsticks. The Bobbi Brown bag (as background) is proof of authenticity. Thanks again to Kinda Shy for providing the tickets, which I believe also include hospitality-room passes.

There’s a wire report that the Pro Bowl will be in Miami in 2010. Thoughts?

* * *

It’s been a pretty good year for former UH slotback Davone Bess. He had a breakout rookie season with the Miami Dolphins. He got married. He became a father. And now the Dolphins, following the greatest turnaround in NFL history, are in the playoffs.
How are you feeling?
“It feels great, man. Words can’t describe it. Knowing how hard we worked … it’s just a great feeling. I’m happy for Chad (Pennington, the quarterback). The Jets kicked him to the curb.”
How’s Samson (Satele, the former UH center)?
“He was so excited. He was going around the locker room yelling, ‘Chee-hoo! Chee-hoo!'”
Going 12-0 or going to the playoffs?
“Oh, man. I’ve got to say 12-0. That was never done before at UH. Going to a BSC game, that was never done before. That was special. But if we make it to the Super Bowl, I’ll have to think about that question again.”
Will the $18,000 playoff check come in handy?
“Diapers are expensive.”

    Good morning everyone!

    Wow…. lot’s of “name-dropping” in today’s post!

    Hey Princess – Where’s the videos of yesterday’s fabulous HA Christmas luncheon at Tsukiji Fish Market? Was there any karaoke caroling? 😀 😯 😆

  4. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2008 9:51 am

    Good morning, SteveM.
    How was the singing?

  5. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2008 9:52 am

    No luncheon video.
    No basketball videos.
    However, if you DVR’d yesterday’s basketball game, you might see A-Joe dancing to “YMCA.” His “C” is quite outstanding, I’m told.

  10. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2008 9:55 am

    Liz is lively, too.
    Maybe Sweety served a buffet.

    Hi blushing, I’m DPK, nice to meet you. You look a lot like Nalani. Does anyone ever tell you that?

  18. SteveM December 29, 2008 9:59 am

    Since I have a top 20 position today, I have a suggestion to maintain ST’s hit count and help update my Mainland & International blogger list…

    Maybe the posters here could wish a “Happy New Year” as soon as it is midnight their time on December 31…earlier OK too. Also include your city/state/country if you are not in Hawaii.

    Current Mainland & International Tsai-ko list is at:

  19. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2008 10:01 am

  25. Nalani December 29, 2008 10:07 am

    I think the Christmas breaks did us all a lot of good. Everybody is punchy this morning!

    BTW, Kaha’i is already lifting this morning in preparation for next season. Lead by example!

  26. SteveM December 29, 2008 10:07 am

    ST — the 60’s 70’s singing was OK, but I don’t have a 2nd opinion and I notice the neighbors all have their windows closed . 🙂

    But I really think Karaoke Calls are much better–it is the people that make it fun. I suppose a little ethanol doesn’t hurt too…

  27. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2008 10:09 am

    Robert Kekaula said his favorite song — ever — is “North Shore Serenade.” He plays it while driving around in that aircraft carrier he calls a truck. I know he bought the CD because he doesn’t know how to work a computer. He’s still trying to teach his father how to view his graduation picture.

  28. Stretch December 29, 2008 10:09 am

  30. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2008 10:11 am

    Let’s see, if Kahai can play center, then Estes can move to guard, and then 59 sacks becomes 10, and then Tampa Right is revived, and then I get to go back to New Orleans to reclaim the deposit I left with somebody name Harrah.

  31. Nalani December 29, 2008 10:12 am

    Wow ST, I never knew that. That just made my day. Thx.

  32. brew808 December 29, 2008 10:13 am

    Yep. Kekaula was telling me that a couple of weeks ago. He also said you’re like the Charles Schwab of the recording industry. I guess I have two days left to get stock tips from you.

  37. Jason December 29, 2008 10:15 am

    ST — I’m not interesting enough to have a blog. But have you considered a Master’s degree in Communications?

    I can help you with your thesis (blog) if not co-author your future best-seller book on the subject 😆

  41. brew808 December 29, 2008 10:21 am

    Can you submit a video Master’s thesis? I hear someone (other than Princess or CC) has quite a bit of experience with videos…. 😀

    “Hey, Princess, where are the basketball videos?

    From the last blog:

    Kekoa: Great idea about being present at the final round tomorrow night.

    If both Colorado teams make it into the final round after today’s semi-final games – Colorado State plays at 11 am and Colorado plays at 5 pm – then post your winning prediction anytime between the finish of the second game and tomorrow afternoon one hour before the championship game starts.

    I’ll be more specific on the time later this evening. Currently, the game is listed on UH’s website as 7:30 pm, but various news sources have said that all UH games are scheduled for that time and that the championship game is at 5 pm.

    All names selecting the first place winner will go into the drawing pool – one entry per person, please – and we’ll select the winner on Wednesday morning. However, in order to win the prize, you must have a ticket stub for Tuesday’s evening games. Off-island entries are welcome and they are the only ones excused from the last requirement. If a non-O`ahu resident wins, he or she can either donate the prize to someone living here who also attended the game or save the prize until you come home for a visit.

    Off to work – my busy season is beginning to roll. Just got notices of more than a dozen legislative $$$ briefings in my in-box today.

    Again, if you have UH or Aloha Stadium capital expenditure requests, please send them to me – swood at hokudotcom. I’ll see if something has been submitted and then get back to you.

    Again, I hope to see some of you at today’s games – the Vermont team in particular is really something else.

    ST- Did Kekaula inspire you to go back to school?

  51. chawan_cut December 29, 2008 10:38 am

    jason,
    i’m always on tv, not sure if tv wants to always have me on it though. i think i’m too bright for their cameras. i also wouldn’t be as camera worthy as a-joe and the twins.

    brew,
    i don’t do anything special. i’m surprised no one has cracked down on me yet. i don’t want kekaula to show up at my front door with his aircraft carrier saying, “HEY YOU! what’s up with the videos???”

    THE Princess on the other hand actually has to plan and produce hers. that’s talent. i’m just a wannabe crazy fan.

    and just because my luck can’t get any worse,

    “Hey, Princess, where are the basketball videos?”

    and i need that 48-hour rule for the Broncos. geez, you just had to win ONE game…

  52. addahknowjoe December 29, 2008 10:38 am

    ST- OK, which players have seriously taken on training for next season already?

    Who’s lifting weights for breakfast?

    Who’s running the fields for lunch?

  53. SteveM December 29, 2008 10:39 am

    ST — in Communications or another area? Imagine if RK went back with you… and Mike too. Classes will never be the same 😯 🙂

  54. Kekoa (iphone) December 29, 2008 10:41 am

    Wessai Crew lagging lately. Homes has been AWOL for days now. Koakane just returned home from Cabana but could be back in the line up. BG is still at Betty’s party, and not sure about Ralph”s is still celebrating a rare Raiders win. Kazz is locked inside his vault at 1st Hawaiian Bank, and (J) James is not politically correct, and curveball is still on his mission of mercy caring for Kristin. Our honorary Easiie member Stretch is marketing on Kauai, so that just leave me, you, Mrs. D-1 and Pops.

  55. addahknowjoe December 29, 2008 10:47 am

    Brah, Chawan is innovative.

    SSC officials banned the use of balloons so Chawan goes out and gets a bright, glow in the dark, orange hooded jacket that even airplanes trying to land on the reef runway would be distracted.

    Very powerful stuff under the basket.

  56. Stretch December 29, 2008 10:48 am

    NC St w/ a field goal, now lead 10-6 almost pau 1st Qtr

  57. Stretch December 29, 2008 10:50 am

    news on colt:

    Washington Redskins rookie quarterback Colt Brennan suffered a slight tear to the meniscus in his left knee and will undergo surgery. A sixth round pick in the 2008 draft, Brennan first experienced discomfort in his knee about two months ago in practice, and an MRI revealed the extent of the injury.

    “It isn’t really painful, it’s just a nagging pain,” Brennan said. “I’ve been practicing with it and was moving around fine, but after speaking with doctors, they said it would be a quick fix; it’s just a slight tear.”

    The expected recovery time for Brennan is three weeks.

    http://was.scout.com/a.z?s=71&p=9&c=2&cid=825166

    more news on colt:

    Near the end of today’s season-ending press conference, Jim Zorn committed to keeping Jason Campbell as the team’s starting quarterback going in to next season.

    Zorn also mentioned bringing back Todd Collins and Colt Brennan (who’s having knee surgery) back, and working with all three of them during the summer.

    Zorn also reiterrated that he doesn’t see Brennan unseating Campbell.

    re: PAPA JOHN BOWL etc.

    does anyone have a link to watch the game online?

    thanks for the help

  61. chawan_cut December 29, 2008 10:58 am

    to clear things up, it wasn’t the SSC that banned it. The WAC considered them noisemakers, since some people (myself included) would squeak them as well as wave them. They informed the UH basketball coaches that the WAC referees would be told this, and it would be up to the refs to call a technical foul on the fans for unsportsmanlike conduct or something. This would cost us free throws and the ball. It was then decided by the UH offices to discontinue the use of the balloons. I received a call from WAC commissioner Karl Benson himself to explain all that. It had all stemmed from other WAC arenas where other unsportsmanlike verbal taunts were coming from their fans. The WAC cracked down on them and they complained about our balloons, so they had to oblige and crack down on us. I still don’t see the relationship there, but oh well.
    Now you can see how excited and lively the “student” section is behind the basket. Take the fun out of the game and you have to get creative.
    I think I need to wash that jacket though. Its getting kinda pilau. Although that might also help distract the players, or scare the women farther away… ok, nvm, I’ll wash it.
    After this tournament.

  65. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2008 11:06 am

    In case anybody wonders, Wena picked Saturday’s winner, JuJu picked the semis’ winner.

  67. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2008 11:07 am

  68. Stretch December 29, 2008 11:08 am

    If we pick on after 4:30, it’ll be my friend Christie.

  72. Stretch December 29, 2008 11:12 am

    Do I need to take your friend Christie out to lunch??

  73. Nalani December 29, 2008 11:13 am

    Mr. Tsai
    is there any truth to the talk on other boards that Brian smith will be cut ? you seem to know Mack pretty good. any insight.

    i think this is one area that needs the most improvement and da guy neva get his players even better!

  76. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2008 11:18 am

    Actually, she likes Bobbi Brown cosmetics. That would win her vote. Of course, I thought, when did Bobbi Brown have time to do that while being married to Whitney and getting busted every other weekend?

  77. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2008 11:19 am

    Brian Smith will be fine. He has the endorsement of Mouse Davis.

  78. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2008 11:21 am

    1. Very good.
    2. The only way to offend the A-Houses is to mention the previous administration.
    3. That’s why Stretch, Myki and SJMacro are on the non-paying payroll.

  79. BowsForever December 29, 2008 11:21 am

    Chee-hoo, Samson and Davone! I never expected the Dolphins to have a turnaround like this, but hopefully their good fortunes will pay off dividends for a certain couple of starters.

  80. SteveM December 29, 2008 11:21 am

    Stretch:
    December 29th, 2008 at 11:12 am

    Stretch — maybe you just need a better reputation as a first date… 🙂

    ST — does Mike need test subjects for his dissertation work… 😕

  81. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2008 11:23 am

    If anyone is interested, Davone is arriving in town Feb. 18. He’ll be here six weeks.
    Davone and Colt also will be hosting a party here, if anyone’s interested. Maybe that will be the next drawing.

  82. Stretch December 29, 2008 11:23 am

    what does that meen?

  84. BowsForever December 29, 2008 11:24 am

    Zorn: Really, you might have one more year to work with Campbell, but if you’re not open to a QB competition where Colt just might beat Campbell out…not sure how long you’ll keep that coaching job. Because Campbell sure hasn’t looked that great in the last half of the season.

  85. myki December 29, 2008 11:26 am

    Hey Princess, where are the basketball videos?

    Good morning, soon to be good afternoon to all. Hope to see some of you this evening.

    Have a great afternoon.

  86. Tombo Ahi December 29, 2008 11:27 am

    whatever happened to davone’s twitter page? or maybe that was a fake davone and that’s why it got deleted.

  87. chawan_cut December 29, 2008 11:32 am

    Stretch, Stephen,
    I agree on the stupidity of the rule. But my hands are tied, and the balloons are gone for now. They became popular during the AC/Alika days. They at least gave the fans that would’ve otherwise sat on their hands all game long, a chance to be a part of something bigger and think that they could alter a free throw shot here and there. Kids loved em. I bet many families went to games because their kids wanted to run over and grab balloons.
    I also asked Mr. Benson about cowbells and other noisemakers at football games, but he said there are different NCAA rules for outdoor games.
    Oh well. Nothing like the WAC!!!!! Play up! but make it boring for your fans!

  88. chawan_cut December 29, 2008 11:33 am

    oops, forgot,
    my last chance effort…

    I heard we got snow on Mauna Kea too. A friend from Hilo sent some beautiful pix.

  92. d1島 December 29, 2008 11:37 am

    …or was it Suzy? Candy? Angie? 😕

  93. iwonderwhythehateme December 29, 2008 11:39 am

    hello Stephen Tsai

    re: Gerke Replacement

    Is it set in stone that STuzz is “promoted?” or do you know if Coach Mac is putting the position out to bid the best candidate? Does Admin have any say in this?

    Finally how does our pay rate for these assistant coaches hinder our chances of landing a former-BCS conference caliber coach?

  94. d1島 December 29, 2008 11:40 am

    Nalani,

    I bet djmitcho has a much different way to describe the snow at this point!

  95. Stretch December 29, 2008 11:41 am

    NC St touchdown!! They lead 17-6 38 seconds left in the half

  96. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2008 11:42 am

    …another busy day at work?
    How’s the weather on the Garden Isle today?

  98. Nalani December 29, 2008 11:43 am

    Speaking of dates, you guys could all learn something from Duffer and Whitey. They are pretty high up there in my ranking list of guys who know how to take care of the wahine in the group!….and D1, don’t try to insinuate anything dirty either!

    Of course, my wonderful husband will always be #1 in my book, but those guys were the Maui hosts with the mosts.

  99. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2008 11:45 am

    Re: Gerke’s successor.
    Nothing’s set in stone. I’m hearing a bunch of different names. Some repeated more than others.
    Also look for some new roles on the staff. One is going to be really surprising.
    They won’t be announced until just before spring ball, though.

    What’s been remarkable is that JD has been able to retain his entire staff. That’s not easy in this economy. I know that. I see empty desks around me at work.
    By the way, sports ranked high on the recently released seniority list.
    Steve Kimura is the No. 1 copy editor, for the entire paper.

    yes it sure does. would you ever consider a position w/ UH football should the opportunity arise?

    im playing the IF game…but if you were offered…what do you think you could offer the program?

  112. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2008 11:54 am

    I coached my brother’s AYSO soccer team. Actually, I was an assistant. But the head coach wasn’t there one day, so I got to coach. The kids were intermediate-school age, which means they didn’t listen to anybody. It was 0-0, and I actually called a play. It was a high kick to a guy who was the son of a prominent person in Hawai‘i. The kid had a really big head, we’re talking blog-host big. Anyway the high kick goes to Jumbo Head, who manages to head-shot it into the net. We win, 1-0.

  113. Uce2 December 29, 2008 11:56 am

    I’d also like to see UH pick up more coaches from Hawaii’s high schools. Brian Teo would be an excellent pick up for UH. This is the man who raised, taught, and coached the greatest football player to ever come out of Hawaii – Manti Teo. Imagine Brian Teo pushing and nurturing the UH players to be the best in the same way he nurtured and pushed Manti Teo to be the best. Nolan Tokuda at Leilehua would also be a great addition to UH.

    I agree with DPK that Pride would also make an excellent candidate for the recent vacancy on the UH coaching staff.

    I’ll tell you this. If Sapolu were the O Line coach, I guarantee you no one playing for him would ever give him any lip. Smith has this problem because the boys all know he has never played in “the show”, he has never been in actual combat.

    It’s like the military. Guys who have never been in combat respect and listen, without question, to those who have been in combat.

    Football is the same. I don’t know any sane player who, were Al Noga the DC or D Line coach, would ever give an Al Noga or a Niko Noga any lip about what to do, when to do it, how to play, and how to train. Niko, Al, and all the others I have previously mentioned are all “combat veterans”. These are the guys who have been to the promised land, the guys who have fought in the trenches, the epic battles you read about in newspapers and that you hear about on the radio and see on TV. These are the Special Forces guys in football. Smith and the rest are just regular infantrymen. Nothing wrong with this. It’s just that people/players/infantrymen are more likely to respond positively to someone who has been “there” as opposed to someone who hasn’t.

    Greatness in one’s person and presence brings out in lesser people greatness too.

  114. iwonderwhythehateme December 29, 2008 11:57 am

  116. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2008 12:02 pm

    At UH, I think I could be the kicking coach. I’d sit on the side, and just before the kick, I’d call timeout.
    Or maybe I could be the quality-control coach. You know, the guy who yells: Hey, snap the ball, there are only 6 seconds left on the play clock.

  117. iwonderwhythehateme December 29, 2008 12:06 pm

    Great to hear your son is already getting started with the 2009 season. Coach Smith will have a lot of pressure on him and he should look up and down the roster to find those that are going to be ready to dominate the line of scrimmage.

    Numba 2 Entry:

    “Hey, Princess, where are the basketball videos?”

    As noted last week, Lingle has released $4.5 million for planning & design of Aloha Stadium renovations. First major segments will be finished before the 2010 season with the next round the following year.

    All totaled about $150 million will be spent over the next 4 to 6 years with a significant chunk of that coming from the private sector.

    BTW – half the basketball contest is still on. See #44 above.Colorado State won its semi-final. If Colorado wins the 5 pm game today, then the contest is on. Remember, to win the drawing, you must attend tomorrow night’s championship game. Still no word as to what time the game will be played.

    Back to work.

  187. Jason December 29, 2008 2:32 pm

    Hey, Princess, where are the basketball videos?

    I’ve never really cared for the Pro Bowl, but I do recognize how much of an economic impact it makes. At the very least, I hope they commit to playing it here every other year. Then should the NFL realize Hawai‘i’s the place to be, then they can move it back here permanently.

    I understand the cost argument, but people aren’t going to travel and stay in that host city for that long; unless the game were a double-header with the Super Bowl, and that makes absolutely no sense. So you might as well stage the Pro Bowl in a warm-weather place, and what better spot than here?

  188. SteveM December 29, 2008 2:36 pm

    Mei Ling — no, I just bought the #5 “60’s-70’s Pop Rock” and #12 “Variety, Standards, Show, Traditional” chip. Note these are the ones in the blue packaging. The ones in the red and white packages have different numbers and songs. This prompted my search to Waipahu on Saturday.

    You and your family must had had a blast last Saturday. Gotta contact Russ since January is almost here…as we limped out of Genji’s last time, we swore no more calls until next year… 😆

    I have a dentist appointment at 1500. BBL.

    Re: Grad. Assts./ The Future

    I think it would behoove a head coach starting out to get former athletes from the top programs, like USC, Penn State or Texas to serve as grad assistants in their program. As a head coach you can elicit so much info from these grad assistants or athletes coming from the top schools in the country on how their coaches (Carrol, Paterno or Brown) run their programs.Having a different perspective, and maybe even a better one, especially from these athletes that come from the best programs in the country would only enhance your program.The analogy of why the competitors of Microsoft (Apple?) look at hiring Microsoft people is in hopes that they can learn or “steal” an idea on getting better. I think this concept can apply to football.And if the program wants to aspire to be the best this is what it should start doing. It’s no conundrum looking at our staff at how indigenous, young and inept it is that our Coach doesn’t have his eye out for the best, though. Come next year at this time and if Pandora’s Box is still open, and all the foreseen troubles and problems still exist, like a lack of instilling discipline, leadership and an offensive and defensive philosophy and foundation, then it wouldn’t be that hard to figure out why.

    “Hey Princess, where’s the basketball videos?”. this is my 3rd post and if this is a winner, please give it to nalani.

  191. brew808 December 29, 2008 2:48 pm

    Mufi – and/or someone needs to schedule a competing 808 outdoor event opposite from the 2010 Pro-Bowl. It looks like CBS has the TV coverage for 2010 – so maybe ESPN might be interested. How about a Golf tournament, beach volleyball, surfing, etc…. something for the potential TV viewers and Pro-Bowl participants to see and covet?

    I don’t know if the Pro-Bowl actually brought in a lot of kala…. but the HVB and overall 808 economy will miss the publicity & advertising. IMHO 😀

  192. Kevin December 29, 2008 2:48 pm

  194. whitey December 29, 2008 2:52 pm

    wd, good to hear that they are going to do some work on the stadium.

    many times it is not easy to lose something we have had here for years. this is especially true when one of the kids decide to leave home, but it is part of life. same for the pro bowl, if they want to leave, give them your blessings and let them go. That’s life, that’s life.

  195. jm2375 December 29, 2008 2:54 pm

    Good afternoon Tsai-kos!!

    Don’t understand why NFL wants to move the ProBowl. From what I hear, it’s the players’ WIVES who want it here. Why would the wives wanna go to someplace they go during the season anyway?

    Anyway, got to work around 12 today, had to accompany daughter to her orthodontist appt. She can now add the title of “metal mouth” to “motor mouth”. 🙂

    back to work…. (unlike Stretch)

  196. whitey December 29, 2008 2:55 pm

  201. Da Punchbowl Kid December 29, 2008 3:00 pm

    All we need to do about the Pro Bowl is fix up the stadium as planned.

    They should also ask the players at the next game where THEY would like to play the game; Hawaii or Miami. Their answers speak volumes. When asked about moving the game, last year’s players were unanimous in favoring Hawaii as the venue.

    We DO need to work harder at keeping Honolulu and our stadium more attractive as the PB site. But like it was suggested here, no need to kiss anybody’s a@@ about it.

  202. Da Punchbowl Kid December 29, 2008 3:02 pm

    “Gigantor the space aged robot! He’s at your command!”

    Maybe we could get Gigantor to fix the stadium for us…

    Fixing up the stadium…. how much is Engineering, and how much is “marketing”? 🙄

  205. Maverick December 29, 2008 3:08 pm

    Aloha gang

    Go Davone, Go

    Pro Bowl Miami? At least it stays in America. Could of went North to a O’Canada Dome.

  206. Stretch December 29, 2008 3:08 pm

    brew808 – they go hand in hand. You have to do the marketing to be able to get the contract to do the engineering for the project. Then you have to go marketing again to get the contract to do the actual construction. You see how important marketing is?? And you guys think it’s all fun and games.

  207. whitey December 29, 2008 3:11 pm

    last take on aloha stadium. it doesn’t matter what the players or their families want, but what the nfl bosses want. the miami dolphins will be sold as soon as they play their last game this season and that is the future site because that is probably part of the deal to buy or sell the franchise. present owner, WH, is very concerned about capital gain tax and knows that Obama will try to eliminate it. give the pro bowl about 3 years in miami and they lose player’s participation because it will not be worth to play in the bowl or families will dictate if the player play. after that, Hawaii has the leverage and if smart, make the nfl pay for everything because by then Hawaii will have found something to replace the pro bowl.

  208. Jason December 29, 2008 3:11 pm

    Hey, Princess, where are the basketball videos?

    I was just thinking — if someone asked Stretch to talk about his work as an engineer, what would he say? I’m not sure he knows … 😯

  209. Pomai December 29, 2008 3:13 pm

  217. Kekoa (iphone) December 29, 2008 3:28 pm

    Duffer & Whitey are extremely good hosts Nalani. I know that from the visits I’ve made there to Maui. It’s a throwback to the way things were in each of our families when we were kids. We have to teach our children to pay it forward.

    So how’s the birthday boy doing. Was he satisfied that you spoiled him enuff on his special day? Hehehe…

  218. Stretch December 29, 2008 3:29 pm

    brew808 – my speech would be DURING the cocktail hour.

    During a speech class at UH, I gave a speech on the different types of beer – ales, lagers, pilsner…. I cleared it with the prof to bring in samples to serve to the class while I was giving my speech. Needless to say, everyone was paying attention and I received a very good grade. My friend knew that the prof was a beer drinker so that helped with choosing the topic.

But really it comes down to being the kind of person who just enjoys life, loves his family, and doesn’t need anything expensive to make him happy…..although I must add he did especially like the 2000Honda Generator I bought for him for Christmas. Came in handy during the power outage.

  225. roysan16 December 29, 2008 3:42 pm

    Re-Nevada vs Maryland (1130 a.m start tomorrow/Boise’s field.)

    Last I saw Nevada was a 2 pt. favorite (it went up to 2.5). I like Nevada in this game. Nationally, Nevada is ranked 2nd in rushing offense and 3rd in rush defense. But last in pass defense. The Nevada OL IMO is the best in the WAC. And their DE some have touted as the best tandem in the country. The QB and RB have both gone over a 1000 yrds, w/ QB also passing for another 2000 yrds.

    Skimming thru the Maryland stats. The 7-5 team had wins at home against Cal, Wake Forest, North Carolina, North Carolina St and on the road at Clemson. The defense on the average gives up 21 pts a game. With the Maryland QB coming off his best game of the season in a season ending 27-21 loss, where he threw the ball for 360 yrds the question will be can he do it against the last ranked Nevada pass defense?

    Either way this shapes up to be a great game tomorrow. One it gives the WAC a little creditability it yearns for should Nevada win. And two it quits the skeptics in saying the WAC teams are over rated should Nevada win.

    For the Notre Dame fans and coaching staff, in a way I’m guessing, they’ll have some interests in this game because Nevada plays them kicking off the 2009 season (9/5).

  226. duffer December 29, 2008 3:42 pm

    2000 Honda Generator, Gee just like buying the wife a vacuum cleaner. I thought that was pretty romantic! 🙂

  227. brew808 December 29, 2008 3:46 pm

    duffer – That’s an AWESOME gift from Nalani!!! IMHO 😀

  228. Kekoa (iphone) December 29, 2008 3:46 pm

    A very wize and timely choice Nalani. I remember giving hints for wanting a ‘chain saw’ for my birthday.

    The chain saw massacre movie came out that weekend…my kids were diving for cover when they saw that look in my eyes when I unwrapped the box!

    I cut enuff wood that winter to burn 24/7 for the next 4 winters!

  229. Nalani December 29, 2008 3:46 pm

    Oh Duffer. Big difference.

  230. L10pc December 29, 2008 3:48 pm

    Hey, Princess, where are the basketball videos?

  231. Nalani December 29, 2008 3:49 pm

    …and for the guys who are into that kind of thing, the generator ran our fairly large refrigerator/freezer for 15 hours on one tank (one gallon of gas).

  232. brew808 December 29, 2008 3:51 pm

    Ooooohhhhh…… How about the TV’s (videos)? :mrgreen: 😆 😯

  233. jm2375 December 29, 2008 3:51 pm

    So, Kekoa, where’s the chocolate cake? Jason has a craving…. 🙂

  234. brew808 December 29, 2008 3:53 pm

    Forget the chocolate cake! Let’s hear more about the Honda generator….. 😀

  235. brew808 December 29, 2008 3:55 pm

    My buddy use to set-up his DirecTV dish and TV at the tailgates (49ers) to watch the other games …. fun! He was the envy of 75% of the guys there…. 😀

  236. Jason December 29, 2008 3:58 pm

    I heard chocolate cake? 😉

    I get plenty in the refrigerator. Dry, though, so I have to eat it with milk, like cereal.

  237. Nalani December 29, 2008 4:00 pm

    OK for brew808….

    …so the first thing Shelton did was plug in our Christmas lights while everyone else on the street was dark. Neighbors began calling and asking how we had power. Shelton was having fun. I made him turn them off.

    The generator is only 45 pounds (dry) and very quiet. We unplugged the refrig in the morning and plugged in the rice pot, coffee maker, and toaster all at the same time. That made the generator work a little bit, which was surprising. It was a little louder than when it ran the refrig. We ate spam, eggs, rice for breakfast.

    Alewa didn’t get power ’til 2pm.

  238. brew808 December 29, 2008 4:00 pm

    ice cream might be a better complement to the chocolate cake… 😯

  239. Nalani December 29, 2008 4:02 pm

    We never ran the TV off the generator. Shelton was afraid the inconsistent power would harm the electronics. But we did decide that if the power outage went much longer, we would plug in my computer battery back up to the generator and then run the TV thru that, to protect against power surge. Shelton said it could’ve run the TV, Sound System, and XBox all at the same time.

  240. brew808 December 29, 2008 4:03 pm

    Oooooooohhhhhh….. :mrgreen: 😯 :mrgreen:

    That Sheldon is a darn LUCKY GUY!!! :mrgreen: 😆 :mrgreen:

    But back to that generator…. :mrgreen:

  248. brew808 December 29, 2008 4:16 pm

    Hey, Princess, where are the basketball videos?

  250. NorthShoreFan December 29, 2008 4:18 pm

    Nalani..got me a Honda 2000 too and it has a lot of uses besides power outages. Got to get a surge protector with a filter. I get static when using my radio.
    The thing willl increase power when you increase the load level by plugging in more stuff. The fridge and stuff that spike when the compressor kicks in will kick the generator up a notch but once the appliance reaches max temperature the generator quiets down.
    The best gift for my family, especially if you have three refrigerators!

  251. brew808 December 29, 2008 4:19 pm

    Where’s the Princess and her basketball videos? And how is Ms. Faye? 😀

  252. whitey December 29, 2008 4:19 pm

    jason or stretch, you guys are good with numbers, so please explain to me what is
    a kb
    a mb
    a gb
    i know it is something about bytes, but how does it work? no make fun cause i get amenesia.

  253. curveball December 29, 2008 4:22 pm

    Kekoa

    Are you going to blow up the cup cakes?? I will come watch that…….

  254. MeiLing December 29, 2008 4:23 pm

    Nalani,

    That generator was da bestest present. Lucky! Good timing!

  255. NorthShoreFan December 29, 2008 4:23 pm

    Whitey, me thinks its kilobytes, megabytes and gigabytes or sumtin la dat.
    like …100 1000 10,000. a step up in capacity..

  256. brew808 December 29, 2008 4:25 pm

    k=kilo=1000X,
    m (actually should be M)=mega=1-million,
    g=giga=1-billion

    small case “m” really should be milli -for 1/1000=0.001

    b=byte which is a “unit” of digital data somewhat related to the architecture of your CPU/computer and storage device

    So, 1gb = 1000 x 1Mb = 1000000 x 1kb = 1-billion bytes 🙄

  257. Nalani December 29, 2008 4:26 pm

    Yeah MeiLing, and I got to enjoy it too! Lucky me!

  258. whitey December 29, 2008 4:29 pm

    northshore, thanks. think i got it. 100 = 1 kb; 1000 kb = 1 mb; and 10,000 mb = 1 gb. thanks, now i can do my project on the compluter. i going back to work and will lurk to see what kind of wiseass answer stretch comes up with.

  259. brew808 December 29, 2008 4:31 pm

    1000 MB = 1 GB
    and 1000 GB = 1 TB (tera-byte)
    🙂

  260. whitey December 29, 2008 4:31 pm

    brew, thanks. i think i can handle those numbers. hahahahaaaaaa

  261. djmitcho December 29, 2008 4:34 pm

  262. LizKauai [Believer] December 29, 2008 4:39 pm

    Tsai… I guess I have to go to the ProBowl next month if I ever go at all…

    First the Grand Slam of Golf and now this…

    But remember dat Tiger no play ’em after they left Kauai… for whatevah reasons.

    I tink da players like come Hawaii, eh?

    So how is this “revelation” going to affect the upcoming stadium renovations? Should they go for the gusto in hopes of attracting another (or the same) big event?

    So- Stretch, Kymry and I all had lunch a block apart wthin a 2 hour span. We coulda had a CC if we had read the blog first!

    brew,

    Get whitey to get some homemade protugese sausage for that tutorial. These AG guys, all they know is “organic” stuff!

  264. TOM December 29, 2008 4:42 pm

    One figure I saw was that people coming in for the Pro Bowl spend about 28mil and the State gets about 2.5Mil in taxes. Of course with the economy down, I don’t know how many people will come here for the ProBowl. And of course the NFL Charities gives $100,000 to local charities every year.

    I think that if the Pro Bowl goes to Miami, you are going to get a lot of players who will develop some illness or physical problem who will avoid the ProBowl.

    It doesn’t mean that we should not start sprucing up the stadium. We were in Section N Red and was kinda funny with some bright red seats and a lot of various shades of red seats where I was … and looking across the field, the orange seats were in various shades of orange as well.

  265. LizKauai [Believer] December 29, 2008 4:43 pm

    djmitcho- hoping with you that the snow will be on “hold”.

    I rode back from the Hawaii Bowl with a vacationing family from Austin that made a special trip to the Big Island to see the volcano. It stopped erupting the 2 days they were there.

    I read in the paper that it re-started the next day.

    Wow- and I thought _I_ had bachi power! (The mailman is CERTAIN that I should not attend any more away games in person… away this time because we were the Visiting team…. feeling more like Rodney Dangerfield every day!)

  266. MeiLing December 29, 2008 4:44 pm

    dj…

    Hope the snow holds & you get out safely.

    SteveM,

    Outland Trophy winner OLT Andre Smith of Alabama is sent home from Nola and will not play in the Sugar Bowl.

    Coach Nick Saban says he is suspended for “improper dealings” with an agent and his statement seems to indicate that Smith is done playing for the Tide.

    Andre Smith has done an outstanding job in our program as a person, student and a player and we will do all we can as an institution to support him in all future endeavors

  270. Jason December 29, 2008 4:49 pm

    Technically:

    1 KB = 1,024 bytes
    1 MB = 1,048,576 bytes
    1 GB = 1,073,741,824 bytes

    That is, 2^10, 2^20, and 2^30, respectively. But that is technically. Nowadays, they tend to round it to 10^3, 10^6, and 10^9, respectively.

    http://www.t1shopper.com/tools/calculate/

  271. brew808 December 29, 2008 4:52 pm

    Thanks duffer. Maui P-sausage ranks right up there with Honda generators, custom decorated kookies, and Warrior wins! IMHO

    BTW – there’s one more prefix to know about –> peta = 10^15

    So a petabyte is 1000 TB = 10^6 GB = 10^9 MB, etc…… big numbers. I just bought a 1 TB hard disk drive for back-up. I have a 2 TB at work. And state-of-the-art computers now approach 1 peta-flops (flop=calculation per second)! Okay – that’s the “geek” lesson for the day. 😀

    a byte is 8 bits lined up together. The different combinations of bits being off or on is used to describe alphabet letters and letters. So, a byte is one alphabet character or symbol.

    a kilobyte or KB is 1,024 bytes. If it was characters, then around 200 words or a quarter page of text.

    a megabyte or MB is 1,024 KB (around 200,000 words).

    a gigabyte or GB is 1,024 MB

    This example uses text only. Music, movies and graphics use a lot more storage space.

    COLT WATCH- from the Redskins Blog:

    http://blog.redskins.com/2008/12/29/jim-zorn-speaks-well-of-colt-brennan-not-as-well-as-some-would/#continued

    “But two of the major subjects Jim Zorn covered in today’s end-of-season press conference were Jason Campbell’s development and the quality of the rookie class. And those two subjects converge in the person of Colt Brennan, rookie quarterback and presumptive backup to Campbell.

    There have been commenters on this blog who have advocated elevating Brennan to the starting position, often suggesting that such a move should take place immediately. Those people, according to Zorn’s projections today, are in for a bit of a wait.”
    “Colt Brennan got a much stronger arm once he got into our program… Now he’s gonna have a little setback –he’s gonna have that knee taken care of with a scope – and he’ll be strong right into our offesason program. He’ll have some tremendous leaps of improvement as he gets into our program, but I don’t see him unseating Jason. I think he’s just gonna continue to excel.”

  276. brew808 December 29, 2008 4:58 pm

    Yes – it’s a geeky (or is it nerdy?) kind of day…. 🙄

  277. PC Fan December 29, 2008 4:59 pm

    Interesting story:

    Kyle Whittingham signed a five-year extension and will get paid $6 million (or $1.2 million a year) He made $681,000 this year, was the Mountain West Conference coach of the year and a finalist for several national coach of the year honors. He has gone 36-14 games in four years as Utah’s head coach, including a 3-0 record in bowls, not to mention going 12-0 this year.

    So he will now make what Coach Mack gets paid. Goes to show that salaries and performance are not necessarily related.

  278. Jason December 29, 2008 5:01 pm

    And here comes SteveM to explain to everyone in a clear, concise way. 😀

  279. duffer December 29, 2008 5:01 pm

    whitey,

    You should have gotten the unlimited aircard plan. No need worry about downloads.

    Which reminds me, the first time I had internet service, they sold plans by the minutes. Just like cell phone plans, go over the alloted minutes and pay a premium.

  280. duffer December 29, 2008 5:07 pm

    I guess the Pro Bowl is going to Miami

    Liz, better book that flight!

  281. brew808 December 29, 2008 5:13 pm

    brew,

    No fo’get da Tera-bulls 😆

  283. Jason December 29, 2008 5:18 pm

    And at the very greatest levels, there are Garrets and brew808s.

  284. brew808 December 29, 2008 5:20 pm

    Visiting players get to visit the water park in 808. But in Boise, the water is in a different form. Here’s a fun video of the UNR players entertaining themselves. It’s pretty funny if you imagine wafan & djmitcho doing this…. 😆

    SteveM – in your 8bit = 1-byte data word analogy –

    What happens when you have a a 64-bit (or other) machine architecture? 😯 🙄 😀

  286. brew808 December 29, 2008 5:29 pm

    d1島 – I think there’s a chain of gasoline stations (in LV?) called Tera-bulls or Tera-bu’s (actually Terribles)…. 😆 😯 😀

  287. brew808 December 29, 2008 5:31 pm

    …or the Terror-bulla‘s…. 😀

    Hey – what’s the verdict on KGMB’s Lisa Kubota…. so far? 😯

  288. brew808 December 29, 2008 5:34 pm

    duffer, whitey – You guys hooking up w/ bruddah bulla? Isn’t he on the Valley Isle? Figures, power outage, lights go out, mayhem in Waikiki – bulla sips mohito’s in Kula….. 😯 😆 🙄

  289. brew808 December 29, 2008 5:36 pm

    Mei Ling — on my unit, The Lion Sleeps Tonight was on the included chip. I guess it is a standard for all karaoke greats… 😆

  291. brew808 December 29, 2008 5:43 pm

    Last post for awhile…. if ST states that “we’re giving away two more (front-row, baby!!!) tickets to TOMORROW night’s Rainbow Classic games.” and the post stays up through tomorrow, does that mean the tickets are for Tuesday’s or some other game. Oh – I guess that’s a dumb question as this is the LAST Rainbow Classic….. 🙁

    Okay – another question: ST said that to enter, one needed to write: “Hey, Princess, where are the basketball videos?” So, does this make this posting an entry?

    Here’s another question: Tsaikos get three entries each. What happens if we go over? DQ?

    Brew heads off to the corner… his second home….. 😯 🙄 😕

  292. whitey December 29, 2008 5:49 pm

    ok, back after work. hooohaa, the weeds going get it in the yard. thanks to all of you for giving me a short, but learnable lesson in bytes. i can go to the next level of learning which is questionable.

    brew, braddah bulla neva call. he like make like one stealth and think he can come into maui without us knowing, but no worry, we going find him. oh, before i forget, i will get you some p sausage if you come here or if i go to sf.

  300. d1島 December 29, 2008 6:20 pm

  301. brew808 December 29, 2008 6:20 pm

  302. SteveM December 29, 2008 6:21 pm

    Haven’t seen you too often lately. How are things in your side of Texas?

  303. brew808 December 29, 2008 6:22 pm

    Lets see… Papa Al? d1shima? Ralph? Stretch (although he’s already been taken)? 😕

  309. HiFlyer December 29, 2008 6:34 pm

    Congrats to Jason, btw do you need a ride to the game?

  310. Kekoa (iphone) December 29, 2008 6:36 pm

    Congrats Jason…the Mafia car travels the H-1 to and from your humble abode with gurantee close in parking to the SSC regularly. I could be available by simply saying, “Kekoa, I’m interested in a R/T ride to the game AND have a ticket to share with you.”

  311. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2008 6:51 pm

    The next contest is find a date for Jason.
    He’s thinking of Al.
    I’m thinking he should try Kelli.
    Or Esme.
    I told him his college years are the “mating” years.
    He told me: “I have to go. I’m cooking.”

  312. Jason December 29, 2008 6:53 pm

    I’m back. Time to eat.

    If al can’t go, then I’ll ask a girl. 😉

  313. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2008 6:55 pm

  321. Koa-mahu December 29, 2008 7:34 pm

  322. Jason December 29, 2008 7:35 pm

    Well, al said he can’t go tomorrow. On to Plan B …

  323. Jason December 29, 2008 7:40 pm

    Ah, so I see where my seats are going to be. Nice. 😀

  324. whitey December 29, 2008 7:42 pm

    jason, plan B. invite the twins, when you get to the SSC, give them the tickets and tell them to enjoy. you going be one popular guy.

    Re-Possible reorganization in the coaching staff

    Stephen Tsai:

    December 29th, 2008 at 11:45 am
    Re: Gerke’s successor.
    Nothing’s set in stone. I’m hearing a bunch of different names. Some repeated more than others.
    Also look for some new roles on the staff. One is going to be really surprising.
    They won’t be announced until just before spring ball, though.

    “…look for some new roles on the staff…one is really going to be surprising”.

    Let me take a guess, Miano to special teams…Lumpkin to secondary…
    this move to me would be better than a par, maybe a birdie or eagle move on Coach Mack’s part.

    On the other side of the ball, Smith to coaching RB and bring in a new O-line coach?

    The thing I can’t understand is why wait to the spring, when the ambiguity or uncertainty now of what reorganization is going to take place may hinder the recruitment. Letting the recruits know now would seem to be the reasonable thing to do. And a morale booster to the returning players. Having it linger to the spring is not smart.

  326. madeinhawaii December 29, 2008 7:47 pm

    UNLESS, there’s someone who will become available in Spring, eh? Hmmmm… the plot thickens…

  327. bighilofan2 December 29, 2008 7:56 pm

    roysan16 is right. why wait till spring?

    and… all this stuff about Mouse Davis backing BSmith.. or whoever else he’s backing… that is bunk…

    the whole program needs a Big Tuna revamp or makeover. a b i g time k i c k in the butt! our coaches are making the good money. lead by example! i wanna see lean and mean Warriors…. jmo i’m still wearing my green…. and my friends are laughing at me us.

  328. Ralph December 29, 2008 8:02 pm

    a reorganization now would let the returnees know who their position coach will be, allowing them to review their pluses and minuses and giving them a head start in the off season regimen knowing what their position coach feels the player needs to work on…

  329. Jason December 29, 2008 8:04 pm

    I got a date! Except it’s not a date. But she is a good friend of mine from high school, and we were supposed to get together for lunch tomorrow. Instead, she’s going to attend her first UH basketball game. 😀

  330. d1島 December 29, 2008 8:05 pm

    “Big Tuna revamp”???

    Parcells came in, interviewed the HC, and fired him!

    Wacchu talkin’ ’bout, Willis? 😕

  331. Ralph December 29, 2008 8:07 pm

    sometimes a recruit is drawn to the university based on his position coach and the coach’s references, so it would be unfair for the recruit coming in only to find the coach is longer here or coaching another position.

  332. Ralph December 29, 2008 8:12 pm

    lots of empty seats back of the players bench in the bowl area, I can’t see the upper level in the cheap seats-oh, there are no cheap seats in the SSC…lots of tsaikos blogging and asking for a chance to win tickets to the bb game, meaning, lots of tsaikos not going to the bb games. I would put smileys like brew but I don’t know how….

  333. Ralph December 29, 2008 8:15 pm

    12 minutes into the game and the score is 13-8, futile effort on both sides UH needs paying fans but they got to play better and be winners for fans to come out and pay to see them…its called value for the buck and nothing to do with fair weather fans…

  334. brew808 December 29, 2008 8:16 pm

  342. bighilofan2 December 29, 2008 8:36 pm

    d1

    what I am talking about is trying to give our local star athletes a good reason to stay in Hawaii to play football for us. They gotta feel that our coaches are worth sticking around for, that they’ll be in a great program. If the coaches are backing eacdh other up, fine. I don’t see that though, not from what I saw at the south end zone and watching the team go back to the locker room. Hung lo, dats wat I saw….

    coach gotta make the positive speech. dats what needs to be done. give the recuits hope. give us hope. major positive speech! mayjor toni speech.

  352. Stretch December 29, 2008 9:13 pm

    al – I am a little disappointed that I see your son back in his seats already. When AJoe and I was there, we didn’t leave the room and get back to the seats until about 11 min left in the game.

  353. Jason December 29, 2008 9:17 pm

    I’m bringing a female friend to the game. Baby steps, people, baby steps. 😉

    I really did want al to go, but geez, he’s gotta make mochi. He’s more Japanese than me; we never made mochi for New Year’s. One time, my Dad made ozoni, cause I wanted to try. But we never did much of the usual traditions, except for the family getting together to eat. 😛

    Something about Hiram Thompson and the Rainbow Classic. Hopefully this game is the start of better things to come. He’s still not in great shape, but he’s getting there. Baby steps … 😆

  354. al December 29, 2008 9:17 pm

    i hate to be the one to say, i told you so.

    but, i did say after the second game or so, that the bball team will improve once thompson gets back in to shape and healed from the hammy.

  355. al December 29, 2008 9:53 pm

    stretch….he returned at 15 minutes.

    i guess he listened to his father. i told him twenty times, “behave! no get stupid”

  356. wafan December 29, 2008 9:57 pm

    Jason ~ I just saw another commercial on the tube presented by your Hanai Mom. You’ve been neglected by Hawaii’s Mom dot com.

    She should at least be there to witness your 1st date! This borders abandonment…I’m calling the child protection services division.

    Oh…wait a minute, you’re free, white and 21 now…Nevermind! Have a nice date.

  363. Ralph December 29, 2008 10:44 pm

  365. whitey December 29, 2008 11:21 pm

    look forward to seeing jason and his date on tv. am glad to hear #1 and #2 enjoyed the game. time to hit the hay. g’night.

  366. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc December 29, 2008 11:55 pm

    Grrr!!! Finished writing my first post after arriving home only to accidentally flick a key and have it disappear.

    Great game tonight – new starters Hiram Thompson and Paul Campbell set the pace and maintained it. You had to be there to really appreciate the final shot in the first half.

    There was also a really bizarre technical foul called on Petras Balocko for making a face. Perhaps he should call the refs retarded cockaroaches in his first language while smiling ear-2-ear??

    KAZZ: Nothing has been said about replacing the turf, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be. Will check that out.

    Sorry to announce that there will be no Colorado cross-state championship game tomorrow night so no contest. Colorado came close, very close – the game was won in the last couple of seconds by Buffalo.

    Will put together another contest for the upcoming WAC season for both men’s and women’s basketball. Look for the announcement this Friday.

    JASON: Congratulations on winning the tickees. Will look for you tomorrow night. We’re center court about 15 rows above you.

    Congrats, Jason… mahalo kindashy!

    So- anyone else want to to some Tsai-ko activity around the ProBowl? As duffer pointed out… I need to make reservations soon. (Yikes, I need to know if I can get a ticket too!)
    Ok.
    Nitey nite and SWEET Warrior dreams!

  369. bighilofan2 December 30, 2008 3:49 am

    Hiya Liz,

    Hi al. thanks for the words of encouragement…

  370. bighilofan2 December 30, 2008 4:09 am

    LizK,

    hiya girlfrend. 😀 so we’re coming to the Pro Bowl. decided today. lookin at stubhub, yikes da prices! good thing i get my backup, cuz Ballard. heh heh he nose all da spots. 😀

    Al,
    notice that story from the Detroit Free Press today about Parcells? He rebuilt Cowboys, Jets, New England, Miami, all afterbig time losing seasons. and we’re no where even close to that kind of rebuilding but the leadership culture, thats what I’m focusing on. like detroit, fires marinelli, and promotes to underlings. that would not inspire confidence in me, or in the remaining Detroit players, i’m thinking. on the other hand, it took 3 years for Parcells’ first time turnaround. so, i’m listening to you al, i’m listening. and waiting.

  371. Kekoa (iphone) December 30, 2008 4:54 am

    Pssst!…bhf2 & Liz ~

    The secret to getting great seats at the Pro Bowl at a reasonable price is to wait until just before kick off and then go to the front entrance area and buy from scalpers. They will negotiate price because if you don’t buy it, they have to eat it.

    My friends have been coming from Sacramento for years now, and that is how they get Makai sideline seats at bargain prices! Last year, 2 together-orange seats- section M for $50 bucks! They didn’t like the choices in front of the stadium, so they walked over to Gate 5. Right at kick-off, the scalper caved and gave it to them at their asking price.

    The worse they ever had to settle for was North End zone orange, and that is only because they didn’t check with all the scalpers for Makai side tickets. As you know, that mid-day sun can be brutal. They got scorched, but learned a valuable lesson about choice seats.

    I’m not going this year because the NFL can get out of town now, as far as I’m concerned. I will be enjoying some adult beverages with my pals at their favorite watering hole, (the Matai Bar) during their stay. Helping to boost the economy a bit, don’t ‘cha know!

  372. Kekoa December 30, 2008 5:04 am

    Actually, Scalpers is a bad choice of words. Ticket Sellers is much more like it. Sometimes, these are people who were left with extra tickets because someone in their party had bailed out at the last moment…or missed a flight connection.

    These folks will first try to recover face value, of course. Some will buy theirs because the seats are better, and then turn around and try to sell their junk seats!

  373. MeiLing December 30, 2008 5:14 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

    Keeds off to Big Island. Great game last night; I’ll have to go tonight.

    Kekoa,

    Good advice about Pro Bowl tickets. I think I’ll try that.

  374. Kekoa December 30, 2008 5:25 am

    Mei Ling ~ Even if you have tickets already, stop, listen, and learn a bit about what the sellers have to offer. You’d be amazed.

    Some had just inherited the tickets from family who had some unexpected event that forced them to give up the tickets. Thus, any fair amount is ok with them.

  375. Kekoa December 30, 2008 5:37 am

    Re-selling tickets are not illegal here in Hawaii. In CA. it’s a horse of a different feather. They do have undercover officers who cover the stadium entrances, the parking lot…all the way out to the ramps coming off the freeway where scalpers ask you at the stop signs.

    Guess what they do with the confiscated tickets?! Just after kick-off at Candelstick (because this is where I’ve gotten great tickets to the 9ers games) they GIVE them away at the main ticket window on a first come, first serve basis! All you gotta do is ask, “do you have any confiscated scalper tickets available?”

  376. Kekoa December 30, 2008 5:44 am

    Koakane, D-1, Wessie Chaptah fans ~ No can make any kope call dis morning. Got a much needed part for my ride in today that needs to be installed by an auto repair professional. The part is about $1.89, but knowing how to put it on with the right equipment is $250 bucks! Nah, j/k! bbl…

  377. Loa December 30, 2008 5:45 am

    morning gang!

    hows everybody doing?

  378. Loa December 30, 2008 5:47 am

    Kekoa – watch out for that re-route on the freeway

  379. MeiLing December 30, 2008 5:52 am

    Morning, Kekoa,

    I guess I’ll walk around & check for a good seat. The last time I went to a Pro Bowl game was maybe 5 years ago. Got to meet a Denver Broncos Mom on the bus ride over; Pryce, I think.

    I think the NFL is nutz to hold the Pro Bowl in Miami. If they have an overwhelming, unfulfilled demand for tickets to the Super Bowl and can move those purchases to the Pro Bowl as a second choice, they might be profitable. I think Hawai’i’s a nicer place to be, but then, I’m biased.

  380. MeiLing December 30, 2008 5:56 am

    I think I need a nap. After all this kope, though…

    Laters! Have a wonderful day in Hawai’i nei!!! See y’all at the game.

  381. Loa December 30, 2008 5:56 am

    i don’t understand why they’re moving the pro bowl to the week before the superbowl.
    the players that make the pro bowl from the super bowl teams won’t be participating

  382. Stretch December 30, 2008 6:34 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

    So with the Rainbow Classic finishing tonight, what is the contest for today??

  383. whitey December 30, 2008 6:43 am

    Good morning Tsaikos. Hope all is well with all of you.

  384. whitey December 30, 2008 6:45 am

    loa, so they can kill the pro bowl cause no going get players when it goes to miami. hahahahahaha

  385. whitey December 30, 2008 6:46 am

    going the distance, 400 or bust.

  386. whitey December 30, 2008 6:47 am

    but no can beat bhf2 record

  387. whitey December 30, 2008 6:49 am

    can beat stretchie’s record tho

  388. Loa December 30, 2008 6:49 am

    so if a player gets selected to the pro bowl but doesn’t play in the pro bowl because he’s in the super bowl, do they still call him a pro bowler

  389. Loa December 30, 2008 6:50 am

    auwe, sorry bout that whitey

  390. Loa December 30, 2008 7:02 am

    390?

  391. whitey December 30, 2008 7:03 am

    was interesting to read last night the post from TOM about the pro bowl revenue it generates, 28 mil, 4 (?)mil for taxes, and donates 100 k to the state. what i don’t unerstand is the 100k in charity contribution. have 50 k in attendance minus the freebies of about 1k which pays $50 (which is probably the lowest price) comes out to $2.5m. they also get the concessions and they give $100,000?????? that is less than 4% of what they make. the nfl calls it charitable contribution???????? even Budweiser gave that by itself.

  392. whitey December 30, 2008 7:05 am

    loa, no worry. only thing the pro bowlers will have is their names in the media, but they not going show up anyway.

  393. whitey December 30, 2008 7:07 am

    getting close to 400, but only loa helping

  394. Stretch December 30, 2008 7:07 am

  395. whitey December 30, 2008 7:08 am

  400. Loa December 30, 2008 7:11 am

    wow only 100K?
    anyone know if the Marathon folks make any charity contributions
    we busted our arse at one of the aid stations and we got less then $1K for the day

  401. wafan December 30, 2008 7:12 am

    Yahoo!!! Over 400!!!

  402. whitey December 30, 2008 7:12 am

  404. brew808 December 30, 2008 7:14 am

    BTW –

    ~~~•~~~~•~~Good..Morning..Tsaikos..and..Warrior..Nation!!!~~•~~~~•~~~
    Only two more days left in 2008! Was it a good year for you? I don’t know…… at least I still got up this AM….. 😀 😯 😆
  405. wafan December 30, 2008 7:14 am
    So, Jason . . .
    Any reports on your date? You did not scream or pass out when she tried anything — I hope!
  406. whitey December 30, 2008 7:15 am
    thanks guys, fingers was getting tired.
    loa, that is why i don’t mind the nfl leaving for miami. they have my blessing.
  407. Buffoman December 30, 2008 7:15 am
    It’s probably just me but, I’ll say it anyway. I cannot see how most everyone has GA as “the guy” as qb next year.
    Yes, he can throw a mile and he does the “big Ben” run from time to time and that is exciting, but, I really do not see leadership. He’s back there and he looks good when its all going well, but when it’s not, he’s not and he’s supposed to be if he is the leader.
    The ND game was bad as he held on wayyyy to long to the ball. Bad decision making and costly to the team. To me the real telling events occurred in the Ciny game when things started to slip. He was rattled and started short arming his throws and was trying not to make mistakes as opposed to simply leading, having that confidence that he could will a team to victory.
    If that’s his make up, it really does not matter if the guy can throw the ball out of the stadium, we just better be prepared to never be in a stressful situation as his make up simply will not allow us the best opportunity to succeed.
    I still believe that the position should be wide open come spring and that all qbs really have a feeling that each has a shot at winning the position, then go hard in practice making eveyone feel the stress of competing for each position. I’m sure there may be injuries, but hey, that’s better than the end results which was all our eggs in one basket and when those eggs cracked we could not adequately respond.
  410. whitey December 30, 2008 7:18 am
    loa, you read my mind. was going to say that the contest for the first to reach 400 cause stretch needed an excuse to post.
    wafan, enjoy Disneyland. always one of my favorite places and hope you going enjoy the new year’s eve firework show.
  411. bighilofan2 December 30, 2008 7:20 am
    top 409 baybeee
  412. brew808 December 30, 2008 7:22 am
    Aloha wafan – In your earlier post #356 – you said –
    This week at Disneyland is brutal.
    Did you mean brutal on the rides? 😀 How many times have you been on “It’s a Small World” already? 😀 😯 😆
  413. bighilofan2 December 30, 2008 7:23 am
    oh well, top 411 baybee 😀
  414. whitey December 30, 2008 7:24 am
    buffo, i think you on the right track. i too do not see this as there are too many good ones who will surpass him in the spring.
    man that stretch he get some speed, leaves at 5:30 on 30 minute flight, then runs through the terminal better than OJ, gets his truck, and is in his office by 6:15. no wonder they call you stretch. u da man.
  415. Loa December 30, 2008 7:25 am
    whitey – #406, me thinks they going get bachi
  416. whitey December 30, 2008 7:27 am
    bhf2, where you was when we needed your help this morning?
    anyway, thanks tsaikos, had fun, but now have to get on my spacecraft to go meet the others for breakfast of championsh. you all have a great day (i don’t know how to paste smileys like brew).
  417. brew808 December 30, 2008 7:28 am
    Did you guys read Ferd’s article about the ESPN ratings for the Hawaii Bowl? The good news is a record number of households watched the game. The bad news is a record number of households watched the game. Oh well – que sera sera… 😀
    I was hoping to see some stat on if/when viewers started to change channels…. late 3rd Q, when? At least it was a beautiful day in the 808 – and the HVB got some needed air-time. 😀
  418. bighilofan2 December 30, 2008 7:32 am
    Al, D1
    how come B ig Tuna turned 4 franchises around, each in so short ah time? what wuz his secret? imo he’ll Taze anybody, players and coaches, to change the culture. and he’ll say it just right tooo.
    just saying…
    howzit Kekoa,
    I’m gonna take your advicer. thanks
  419. koakane™ December 30, 2008 7:32 am
  420. Loa December 30, 2008 7:33 am
    hey maybe get chance for 500 with brew and bighilo in the house
    Buffoman – i think the competition will be fierce come spring camp
  421. brew808 December 30, 2008 7:34 am
    Oh man…. Ralph last night, and now whitey this AM. You guys need to experiment. Trial and Error. Worse thing is you crash your browser or computer and have to reboot. Try copying then pasting something into your next post. It’s really simple. Heck – BHF2 has done it! 😆 And we know what he does for a living…. 🙄
    BTW – Neuheisel is/was/will-always-be a slime-ball! IMHO 😯 😀
  422. Jack Flash December 30, 2008 7:35 am
    Aloha Kakahiaka!
    About the Pro Bowl- I remember when Peyton Manning finally won the Superbowl, all he could talk about was how excited he was to finally be the guy that shows up later than all the other players in Hawaii. These players all looked at Hawaii as a reward for a long season. Moving the game to Miami a week before the Superbowl is going to be a disaster…
  423. koakane™ December 30, 2008 7:36 am
    quick shout out to bhf2, might be in hilo for new years, maybe call you if dea
    btw what is you new email addy or still using wifes?
  424. brew808 December 30, 2008 7:37 am
    Eh Loa – What does #420 mean? You comparing moi with the BHF2 guy? 😀 😯 😆
  425. brew808 December 30, 2008 7:38 am
    Somebody mentioned it yesterday…. It’s the players wives (families) that really pull for the Pro-Bowl in 808! 😯
  426. Loa December 30, 2008 7:40 am
    brew – #421 – as one pilau bugga (not Ralph, whitey, or BHF2)
  427. brew808 December 30, 2008 7:42 am
    Now Koakane is headed to the dentist!?! You guys have been eating too much chocolate cake and cookies! Koakane, SteveM, jm2008or09’s daughter, …. Who’s next? I tell you, Tsaikos can do dental work! Or at least we’ll try hard (and have fun)! 😀 😯 😆
  428. brew808 December 30, 2008 7:46 am
    Loa – Ummmm…. “pilau” = brew, or Neuheisel???
    Just checking….. 🙄 😯 😀
  429. Loa December 30, 2008 7:47 am
    pro bowl – only thing i feel bad is for the kids who going miss the chance to see their heros up close and personal
  430. Garret (phone) December 30, 2008 7:49 am
    Congratulations to Jason!
    Internet access went down last night before I could catch up with the blog…so I have to send this with my phone.
  431. FloridaTed December 30, 2008 7:50 am
    Morning, Gang.
    If the PB indeed moves to Miami, my feeling is that it will be a short lived experiment and it might be back in Hawaii the following years.
    The State shouldn’t grovel to the NFL, they don’t really have a better option than Hawaii, at least one that makes any sense.
  432. jm2375 December 30, 2008 7:52 am
    Good morning Tsai-kos!!
    Headed in to work a little late today. Gotta drop kid off at her Granny’s, so I don’t have go all the way back to Kailua to pick her up for doctor’s appt this afternoon. Poor ting only had a smoothie, saimin and soup yesterday. Will see how she feels today.
    Saw the orangeman on TV last night. hehehe. Good game. A little more uptempo than previously. IIRC, when Nash was promoted, he said they would run a more uptempo game than Riley ran. Finally saw glimpses of it last night. Any reason why they’re not doing it? The offense is kinda boring, mebbe dat’s why nobody’s watching.
  433. Loa December 30, 2008 7:52 am
    brew –
    the second one 🙂
    i would neva call any brew pilau
    maybe sour or potent but neva pilau 😆
  434. TOM December 30, 2008 7:54 am
    WHITEY: I think the $100 comes out of their various reserves which gets invested – good tax deduction for them. I believe they spread out their contributions to various charities thoughout the US – the figures I used came either from either HVB (or whatever they call themselves now) or Hawaii State.
  435. brew808 December 30, 2008 7:55 am
    No ball handling guards (only Thompson)…. IMHO 😯
  436. brew808 December 30, 2008 7:57 am
    Yikes! Loa – Let’s agree to stop now. We’re cool…. Peace…. 😆
  437. jm2375 December 30, 2008 7:58 am
    OK, I know I’m biased, but Hawaii is MUCH nicer than Miami. More scenic, better weather, etc. They have had frost in Miami before, so the game could be played in 40 degree weather. How big is Dolphin Stadium anyways?
  438. (Jesse) James December 30, 2008 8:02 am
    Good morning Tsaikos…who, been busy busy so not time to read everything….
    Congrats to Jason…saw CC last night on K5..how can you miss the Asian Oompa Loompa….MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA
    Nalani…yes, I live in Chinese Heaven, although I think you live higher up than I do…ask Koakane or Chawan…they both took me home on occasion…LOL
    Hope everyone has a great day….
  439. brew808 December 30, 2008 8:02 am
    Okay – I think the Tsaiko consensus is the grief-to-reward formula for the Pro-Bowl in 808 is large, especially with 808 having to pay in so much kala. The NFL needs to do this experiment (Miami and combo w/ SB), and the 808 needs this data point (Feb, 2010) to assess the economic value of the PB in the 808. I like experiments – and this is a good social-economic one. IMHO 😀 😯 😆
  440. Loa December 30, 2008 8:04 am
    brew – 10-4 😆
    jm2375 – plus the people way nicer in Hawaii
  441. (Jesse) James December 30, 2008 8:06 am
    wafan…did I hear that Jason was taking Mary Anne???
  442. brew808 December 30, 2008 8:06 am
    Miami Dolphin Stadium Seating Capacity is 76,500 (Football). I think the NFL requires all Super Bowl Stadiums to have 65k or more. 😀
  443. Loa December 30, 2008 8:09 am
    Have a wonderful time!
  446. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 30, 2008 8:14 am
    wow 3 MILLION viewers of the hawaii bowl. good thing we go Notre Dame. Quiet honestly it probably didnt help Hawaii Football (recruiting, respect) etc….
    BUT hopefully that chilly weather up north made Hawaii look like a tempting place to visit.
  447. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 30, 2008 8:15 am
    oops *quite* and *got*
  448. brew808 December 30, 2008 8:15 am
    Stretch – You must take your AM kope black. Sometimes you have to add a bit of sweetener or “something” to just take the edge off…. 😀
  449. chawan_cut December 30, 2008 8:15 am
    james,
    asian oompa loompa???
    and i don’t know where nalani lives, so i can’t compare your house and hers.
  450. brew808 December 30, 2008 8:18 am
    Yeah – that orange thing is pretty hard to miss…. 😆
    Okay – I think we have a chance for 500 posts this morning. And to help it along, Where’s ST? Let’s have a friendly contest on what time (HST) ST will start his new blog/thread. I say 9:20 am HST 😀 😯 😆
  451. Stretch December 30, 2008 8:19 am
    brew808 – great idea, maybe some Bailey’s would help
  452. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 30, 2008 8:20 am
    re: New Stadium
    anyone know the cost of building a first class 70,000+ or so size stadium…full with the box seats, restaurants etc etc???
    any ideas on what corporations would be into a public/private kind of thing w/naming rights……
    i could see it now….Mei Sum Superdome
    but seriously…whats the cost? is it possible?
  453. Stretch December 30, 2008 8:20 am
    I think right about now, ST is speeding along the Pali trying to get his soon to school, although he is already late.
  454. (Jesse) James December 30, 2008 8:22 am
    CC…eh, those little orange men from Willie Wonka were awesome dudes…one of a kind who made candy and sang….LOL
    Nalani said that her neighbors on the A Heights were wondering why they had power for their Christmas tree lights….and I said, Oh…so you were the one we were mad at….LOL…..She lives by me…but further up….
  455. brew808 December 30, 2008 8:25 am
    The Niners have been trying to get a 65-70k stadium built in the Bay Area (Hunter’s Point near C-stick or Santa Clara on Great America turf). Old estimates were about $800M. I think that’s low. Most projects in the BA have been under by 20%. Stretch might have insights on contingency funds needed for “marketing”. 😀 😯 😆
  456. chawan_cut December 30, 2008 8:25 am
    if its further up, i wonder if she lives by me then, but then again, i don’t really live there, so i wouldn’t know.
  457. Stretch December 30, 2008 8:29 am
    For CC – I definately see the resemblance
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPExIvSCvXU&feature=related
  458. brew808 December 30, 2008 8:29 am
    The old Denver Broncos had the Orange Crush. UH has the “Orange oompa loompa”! 😆
    Stretch – ST & Wena have a son, or a soon? And will they eventually have two soon’s-in-law, or is it too soon to tell? 😀 🙄 😯
    IWWTHM….it is possible…maybe not a domed stadium…No real need for that in Hawaii IMHO….and it would take away the essence of the outdoor spirit and climate we always promote….
    As for the technicalities of building it, you’d have to ask the engineers in our group….
    For a bit of historical background…it is my understanding that when Aloha Stadium was built, Governor Burns, who envisioned Aloha Stadium wanted to build it at 75,000 plus because he had had talks with the NFL about holding a Super Bowl in Hawaii. They told him that they needed a stadium with a capacity of at least 70,000. However, the powers that be at the time didn’t have the foresight for a larger venue and decided on 50,000 as an adequate number (and also chose a new technology steel that was supposed to form a protective rust coating instead of concrete….and we all know how well that went). It is sort of like the Special Events Arena (aka SSC). When that was built it was originally slated for 12,000 seats. Then people in power said scale it back to 8,000 seats (which didn’t make sense since the HIC already held 8,000). The compromise was 10,000 seats…
  460. (Jesse) James December 30, 2008 8:30 am
    CC…I think she lives up by the park…and the care home for alzheimer’s patients…..near my uncle’s house….
  461. chawan_cut December 30, 2008 8:32 am
    stretch,
    only my jacket is orange, not my face.
    i wonder if the attendance count will go up tonight with all the tsaikos that suddenly will decide to buy tickets to see who jason’s “friend” is.
    either that tv ratings will go up.
  462. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 30, 2008 8:32 am
    thanks James for the background.
    its funny how hindsight is always 20/20.
    do you see any potential companies/corporation that may be willing to put in a large investment into the stadium?
    is so who?
  463. chawan_cut December 30, 2008 8:33 am
    james,
    ok, thats right below me then. cool.
  464. wafan December 30, 2008 8:33 am
    (J)J . . .
    That would not be a date. That would be a nightmare.
    The rides are always fun here at Dizzyland. I injured my back in April and it has hurt to walk since then. So, getting anywhere around here takes a lot of pain and time. The worst part is finding a place to sit until my back stops hurting.
    Tonight we are going to the Medieval Times show and dinner. That will be a lot of fun! Similar to the one in Las Vegas at the Excalibur, I think.
  465. brew808 December 30, 2008 8:35 am
    Doesn’t Nalani live up high, among the clouds? Doesn’t she “fly with angels”? That’s a bit different that being among the orange traffic cones…. 😆
  466. Stretch December 30, 2008 8:38 am
    is the games tonight on regular tv or ppv??
    CC – the reflection of the jacket makes you look orange
  467. brew808 December 30, 2008 8:39 am
    Medieval Times show…. Is there any audience participation? Somehow, I can see wafan joining in and taking over…. 😆
  468. brew808 December 30, 2008 8:41 am
    CC needs an orange baseball cap. 😀
  469. chawan_cut December 30, 2008 8:45 am
    brew,
    i do look like a traffic cone.
    my jacket has a hood, but it gets hot.
  470. brew808 December 30, 2008 8:46 am
    hot… because of the Rainbow Dancers?….. 😆
  471. wafan December 30, 2008 8:48 am
    Brew . . .
    HA! The meal is very Tsai-ko like. Use your hands no fork, knife, or spoon. There is jousting and the crowd cheers for their favorite knight.
    Food, cheering, friends, fun, what more could a group of Tsai-ko’s want?
  472. wafan December 30, 2008 8:50 am
    Jason better watch out for C_C.
    C_C says he is hot.
  473. brew808 December 30, 2008 8:52 am
    Actually CC – you’re very effective. It would be awesome if you could enlist a handful of neighbors to dress in similar orange (or other fluorescent color) jackets. Then, dash left/right or jump up/down right before the free-throw. I think that kind of rapid motion might be a significant distraction for some. Think Duke. It starts small, but someone has to be the initiator.
    Ultimate goal – get “banned” by Benson and the WAC! 😀 😯 😆
  474. wafan December 30, 2008 8:55 am
    C_C . . .
    Why not get some friends together dressed in bright colors and call yourselves the Crayola’s?
  475. brew808 December 30, 2008 8:55 am
    wafan – Ha! You’re right! I did have the great opportunity to sit near you for a couple of meals. I don’t recall you using any utensils… And what happened to the table cloth? 😀 😯 😆
  476. chawan_cut December 30, 2008 8:55 am
    brew,
    i was trying to find a fluorescent green jacket, but they only make them in safety orange or yellow.
  477. wafan December 30, 2008 8:57 am
    Kind of late.
    Happy Christmas!
    Kind of early.
    Merry New Year and a most posperous 2009 to all!
  478. brew808 December 30, 2008 9:00 am
    CC – I’ll check the ski magazines. I think I’ve seen fluorescent green items there. Good idea! I think we can get Jason to participate – unless he gets “lucky” after tonight….. 😀 😯 😆
  479. wafan December 30, 2008 9:01 am
    Brew . . .
    Toughest food to eat is the over-easy fried egg. Soup and ice cream present other challenges. HA!
  480. Nalani December 30, 2008 9:01 am
    Eh I better stop leaving clues about where my house is before Chawan and Jesse James show up at my doorstep with ricebowl in hand the next time get power outage!…Ha.
    On another subject, my husband and I went to the game last night and were lucky enough to get free tix from our son’s basketball coach. So we went in and enjoyed the Colorado/Buffalo game (which was actually pretty boring until the very end) and the UH game. I spilled ketchup on my green polo so had to wear a sweatjacket all night. Was ok – was cold in there.
    Pono plays his next game v Punahou this Friday at KS. Maybe he will have learned some new moves. He said the best part of the whole night was GW’s warm up. They were making some fabulous dunks. He said they lost the game, but won the warm ups.
  481. brew808 December 30, 2008 9:03 am
    How to find Nalani’s? Wait for the next power outage and see which house has the light on, or the fuud cooking…. 😆
  482. brew808 December 30, 2008 9:07 am
    wafan – huh? Re: over-easy eggs – one slurp and gone? or isn’t that what the rice is for? 😯
    I wonder how the LV gang is doing? Did Garret post earlier that the casinos lost their internet connections because the Tsaikos won so much kala, the house couldn’t pay their internet bills? I wonder if there’s any fuud shortages there yet? 😀 😯 😆
  483. jm2375 December 30, 2008 9:09 am
    uhh, Stretch, can tell you no have keeds. It’s Christmas vacation!!!!
    The game is on PPV, so we’ll have to wait till tomorrow morning to catch glimpses of the orange oompah loompah and Jason and his date!!
    BTW, is GW really that bad? If they play like they played last night, they’re gonna get killed in conference.
    Where’s Midori? Coach Trap was on with da Animals dis am talking about the Grand Slam Celebration. Opening day is Feb 20.
  490. brew808 December 30, 2008 9:23 am
    And, GW is in the Atlantic-10 conference, a school right in DC. You’d think a Hoya would know about nearby schools. BTW – What’s a hola hoya? 😀 😯 😆
  503. Nalani December 30, 2008 9:31 am
    Good job Liz. You are the superstah of the morning!
  504. Nalani December 30, 2008 9:33 am
    So should we try for 600?
  505. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc December 30, 2008 9:34 am
    Here’s some information about a new stadium based upon information released during the last legislative session.
    First of all, assume that the land is free so that cost will not be part of the discussion.
    The planning, design and construction cost for a brand new stadium will rujn between $450,000 million and $500,000 million if built anywhere else other than its current site.
    If built next to the existing stadium – not replacing it directly – the cost will run between $375 million and $400 million.
    Both of these figures are TODAY’s dollars.
    There is some concern that state law might have to amended to permit a new stadium from being built by private interests, but that needs to be researched. I ran out of time last year in getting more information. Certainly, private money can be used to do upgrades and that is already being sought.
    If the current site is selected, then upon completion the existing stadium will be torn down and another building will replace it which will be a combination of office, residential and parking which will help generate more revenue.
    Presently, the plans are to upgrade and expand Aloha Stadium by a few thousand seats and to create a major regional park and ride facility for the transit system which will include more parking in a smaller building which will probably only include parking and some commercial development.
    Although there is some support for moving the stadium out to the West O`ahu campus area, this will not happen because of the TOD as well as the confluence of the three major freeways nearby as well as the airport and the major military facilities. Also remember that no matter how much O`ahu grows, West O`ahu will only have about 30% of the population.
    Now that I’ve posted for the day, Stephen will put up a new blog within minutes. It almost always happens when I “sleep in.”
    With respect to last night’s game – it was hustle all the way. In addition to the amazing unexpected performance from Hiram Thompson, watching Sasha Parghalawa play is a joy – he loves to play and he is everywhere.
    I suggest that naysayers about this team attend a game or two in person.
    Tonight is PPV for both the 5 pm and the 7:30 pm game
    Why the double post? I did not touch it more than once. Sorry about that.
  508. TOM December 30, 2008 9:52 am
    Aloha! Tail end of this session?
    The major objection to a 75,000 (more or less) stadium is that you can’t even fill it with a Notre Dame-UH game, let alone, say a Northern Colorado-UH game.
    A Super Bowl would be a one-shot event and I have doubts if all the seat would be filled. While the Pro Bowl has been a sell-out, I wonder if we had a 60,000 tickets available, if it would be sold out.
    Construction costs of course would increase with a bigger stadium. I would think that a 70,000+ stadium would be another empty edifice like the Convention Center.
    Build it and they may not necessary come in the numbers that you would want.
  509. (Jesse) James December 30, 2008 9:54 am
    Okay..are we shooting for 600….let’s do it….LOL
    Nalani, no worries, your secret is safe with us….only will call upon you if power is out for more than two days….
    Brew, if I recall correctly…a hoya is a type of dog….but don’t tell homey that…he may want to have hoya adobo at the next t-gate…LOL
  510. (Jesse) James December 30, 2008 9:57 am
    Oops…my bad….
    “What is a Hoya?”
    The University admits that the precise origin of the term “Hoya” is unknown. The official story is that at some point before 1920, students well-versed in the classical languages combined the Greek hoia or hoya, meaning “what” or “such”, and the Latin saxa, to form “What Rocks!” Depending on who tells the story, the “rocks” either refer to the baseball team, which was nicknamed the “Stonewalls” after the Civil War, to the stalwart defense of the football team, or to the stone wall that surrounded the campus.
  511. al December 30, 2008 10:01 am
    600?
    i’m in.
  512. Jason December 30, 2008 10:04 am
    al, go back to making mochi. 😉
  513. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc December 30, 2008 10:04 am
    Question regarding team nicknames – What is a Bill or what does it refer to as in the Buffalo Bills. Sat with a guy who grew up in Buffalo the other night at the Classic and he hadn’t a clue.
  514. wafan December 30, 2008 10:07 am
    Buffalo Bill CODY?
    For a play on the name. HA!
  515. (Jesse) James December 30, 2008 10:11 am
    TOM…you are correct that a Super Bowl is a one shot deal…but if it can happen a couple of times in a decade…it may be worth it….
    When Super Bowl XL was held in Detroit…these are some of the estimates given…and this was during a time when Detroit was experiencing severe poverty…
    League officials and local leaders here have often said that, with 100,000 out-of-towners spending their money in Detroit throughout the week, the Super Bowl will produce an estimated $302 million boost to the economy.
    In 2004, when the Super Bowl was held in Houston, they experienced roughly a $130 million economic boost….
    I’m not saying that that would make building the thing worth it but it is an idea….
  516. (Jesse) James December 30, 2008 10:12 am
    Let’s talk about Jason’s date for the evening…..
  517. Jason December 30, 2008 10:16 am
    Date? I don’t have a date. Just hanging out with a friend. 🙂
  518. brew808 December 30, 2008 10:18 am
    J(J) – Thanks. #502 was meant as a rhetorical question for Ms. Hoya – jm2^11-2^8-2^6-2^3+1.
    BUFFALO BILLS –
    Buffalo’s team in the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) in 1946 was the Bisons. In 1947 a contest was held to rename the team, which was owned by James Breuil of the Frontier Oil Company. The winning entry suggested Bills, reflecting on the famous western frontiersman, Buffalo Bill Cody. Carrying the “frontier” theme further, the winning contestant further offered that the team was being supported by Frontier Oil and was “opening a new frontier in sports in Western New York.” When Buffalo joined the new American Football League in 1960, the name of the city’s earlier pro football entry was adopted
    Ehhhh….. let’s NOT pick on Jason. We don’t want him to get an anxiety attack or something. Besides, we already have CC…. 😀 😯 😆
    My only questions, is does she have “wheels”? 🙄
  520. jm2375 December 30, 2008 10:20 am
    brew – #502. making trouble again? duuuhh. I only pay attention to the DC area worthy teams, ie the Hoyas and possibly the Twerps. I thought GW was in the same conference as George Mason & James Madison, but they’re not. They are, however, in A-house’s favorite person’s conference. 😈 Too many conferences/teams to keep track of.
  521. (Jesse) James December 30, 2008 10:21 am
    TOM…
    Just one more thing…with only roughly 27,000 participants in the Honolulu Marathon in 2007…the economic impact was tremendous…
    Total Impact Total sales generated: $108,890,000
    Total direct, indirect and induced income generated: $51.15 million
    Total direct, indirect and induced tax revenue generated: $3,719,743
    Again, not trying to extrapolate information from this event to make the case for a Super Bowl…but this was more to show what effect a sporting event can have on the local economy…
  522. brew808 December 30, 2008 10:21 am
    …but that’s what giga-geeks do…. 😆
  523. Jason December 30, 2008 10:23 am
  524. (Jesse) James December 30, 2008 10:24 am
    Jason…al makes mochi??? I thought you…oh no, wait, you make brownies…or was that mary anne….LMAO….
  525. brew808 December 30, 2008 10:25 am
    Mahalo for the numbers J(J), TOM too. I’m still waiting on the economic impact for the HVB due to the publicity these sorts of “big” events generate. Is there any studies of that and anyway of estimating that impact? 😯
  526. Bulla December 30, 2008 10:27 am
    Hmm, an interesting topic on NFL Live — what do players and GMs look for in a head coach? Good lists, although Mack needs to improve on some things …
    The Best Head Coach: A Player’s View
    — Knowing his coaching choices
    — Command the room
    BTW, congratulations to homey for winning the Pro Football Pick’em league!
  543. oxymoron December 30, 2008 10:50 am
    dunno if I missed it, but did ST confirm the JC letters of intent?
    WOW, he get one date set up and he thinks he is Fabio or something.
  545. Nalani December 30, 2008 10:51 am
    Jason – big talker now huh?
  546. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 30, 2008 10:52 am
    hey Jason,
  547. homey ℞ December 30, 2008 10:52 am
    So when’s the next cc? Cattle call, not chawan cut.
  548. Stretch December 30, 2008 10:54 am
    Nalani – EXACTLY!!! When he hits the “homerun”, then he can talk.
  549. Nalani December 30, 2008 10:54 am
    I like go Karaoke. When we going??
  550. homey ℞ December 30, 2008 10:55 am
    Free tickets, free food, no need Tantalus, just ask Bulla to hook you up with a hotel room.
  551. brew808 December 30, 2008 10:55 am
    cologne? Does the keed even shave yet? 😯 🙄 😆
  552. homey ℞ December 30, 2008 10:57 am
    I’m with Nalani too! When is the next k-call?
  553. Nalani December 30, 2008 10:59 am
    Stretch?! I’m shocked. You are corrupting the youth. Let him go for the first kiss before you talk about the homerun.
  554. brew808 December 30, 2008 10:59 am
    Pro Football Pick’em league? – Does that mean homey ℞ gets a paid trip to LV? Now that would be an awesome sight to see – homey ℞ in Las Vegas! 😀 😯 😆
  555. Nalani December 30, 2008 10:59 am
    We are well on our way to 600….go Tsaikos!
  556. LizKauai [Believer] December 30, 2008 11:00 am
    Actually, Jason is a “catch”… too bad I’m not a cougar… hmmm….
  557. brew808 December 30, 2008 11:00 am
    All the CC/Karaoke Talk – Where’s SteveM??? 😯
  558. Stretch December 30, 2008 11:01 am
    A Karaoke Kall is in the works.
    nah, no need worry, I don’t think he knows how to even hit the ball to get the homerun…..
  563. brew808 December 30, 2008 11:04 am
    sacrifice bunt? 😯
  564. brew808 December 30, 2008 11:05 am
    Sorry Jason – can’t help myself. I’ve joined the Tsaiko Pack!!! 😯 😆 👿
  565. homey ℞ December 30, 2008 11:06 am
    brew – I’d be satisfied with a 6-pack of Guinness beer for a prize.
    MLiz – eying the young studs I see…
  566. Nalani December 30, 2008 11:06 am
    So Stretch, I would assume then that you are the Grand Poobah of all things related to the wooing and wowing of wahine? Maybe you could give Jason a little lesson in getting to first base.
  567. homey ℞ December 30, 2008 11:07 am
    Just don’t let it be a premature homerun…(J)J told me it’s kinda shame.
  568. Jason December 30, 2008 11:08 am
    Bad enough when we have LizKauai and prideperiod when we go karaoke, now we have Nalani to put us to shame?
    Actually, we might have to leave during the championship game — no, we aren’t going to Tantalus, my friend needs to get home early.
    Okay, I think that’s enough with the joking. I don’t mind it, but I don’t want her finding the blog and reading all this. Kinda awkward, you think?
  569. Stretch December 30, 2008 11:08 am
    Nalani – nah, that is James’ department.
  570. Nalani December 30, 2008 11:09 am
    Ah Homey. You have taken us to a new low. No need tell secrets.
  571. SteveM December 30, 2008 11:10 am
    Karaoke Call?
    Good morning everyone!
    …actually, I am at work today . 🙂
  572. Jason December 30, 2008 11:11 am
    Now, teasing James … I got no problem with that. 😛
    And here’s one for jm2375: A statistician is someone who is good with numbers but lacks the personality to be an accountant.
  573. homey ℞ December 30, 2008 11:11 am
    Nah Jason, I think she’ll find it cute that you have all these way older friends who look out for your well being in a twisted kind of way.
  574. Jason December 30, 2008 11:13 am
    The reason why I don’t have a girlfriend:
    The difference between an introvert and extrovert mathematician is: An introvert mathematician looks at his shoes while talking to you. An extrovert mathematician looks at your shoes.
  575. Nalani December 30, 2008 11:14 am
    My nephew thinks this is the best pickup line in the world (He’s 16, so take that into consideration)….
    (Boy) Hi…Do you know how much a Polar bear weighs?
    (Girl) No
    (Boy) Just enough to break the ice – my name is “Jason”, what’s yours?
  576. Stretch December 30, 2008 11:16 am
    SteveM – check your email
  577. homey ℞ December 30, 2008 11:16 am
    Jason – jm0000 did bring a beach ball to the cabana. She actually thought there was a sandy beach and shoreline!
    Nalani – okay, I’ll spare the (J)J secrets…for now.
  578. LizKauai [Believer] December 30, 2008 11:16 am
    “A statistician is someone who is good with numbers but lacks the personality to be an accountant.”
    Yikes!
    THAT was a homerun – Jason style…
    No worry about Nalani… karaoke is karaoke. The feedback levels the playing field. Although, we may just want to sit back and have a nabeyaki udon if Nalani is there!
  579. Stretch December 30, 2008 11:18 am
    Nalani – that’s a good line but I think if I was to ask the question, her reply might be, “I don’t know, how much DO you weigh??
  580. LizKauai [Believer] December 30, 2008 11:18 am
    “The difference between an introvert and extrovert mathematician is: An introvert mathematician looks at his shoes while talking to you. An extrovert mathematician looks at your shoes.”
    A grand slam for Jason.
    ggrrrrowwlll… 😈
  581. NorthShoreFan December 30, 2008 11:18 am
    Jason with Liz and Pride and Nalani helping you out you better get one wahine friend.
  582. homey ℞ December 30, 2008 11:20 am
    Jason – Just don’t use this line as an ice breaker.
    “I wish I were an integral, so I could be the space under your curves.”
  583. LizKauai [Believer] December 30, 2008 11:22 am
    583?
  584. Nalani December 30, 2008 11:23 am
    I am actually terrible at karaoke if that makes anyone feel any better. That’s the truth. My friends all invite me and then when I’m pau sing they look at each other with disappointment. I think what Liz says is right. They put so much reverb on those mic’s that everybody sounds good. So pls invite me to karaoke so I can sing and then you guys can all tell your friends that you sounded way better than me.
  585. homey ℞ December 30, 2008 11:23 am
    New blog is over there ——>
    Shucks, before we reached 600.
  586. Nalani December 30, 2008 11:26 am
    Homey – I’m impressed. That was way over my head. Who knows, that might be the perfect pick up line because the girl who actually gets it and laughs would be the perfect girl for him!
  587. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 30, 2008 11:27 am
    nalani,
    your nephew is smooooth.
    jason i got a few pickup lines you could use…i dunno if i am allowed to post them on a public forum like this though. haha
  588. homey ℞ December 30, 2008 11:28 am
    Nalani – reverb doesn’t make me sound better. I only sound good when I don’t sing.
  589. Jason December 30, 2008 11:28 am
    For jm2375 again:
    When a statistician passes the airport security check, they discover a bomb in her bag. She explains. “Statistics shows that the probability of a bomb being on an airplane is 1/1,000. However, the chance that there are two bombs at one plane is 1/1,000,000. So, I am much safer …”
    For homey:
    I wish I were a derivative, so I can be tangent to your curves …
    I wish I were DNA helicase, so I could unzip your jeans genes …
  590. homey ℞ December 30, 2008 11:29 am
  596. SteveM December 30, 2008 11:45 am
    homey — I’ve already made 600 a time or two, so I’ll help you out here… 🙂
  597. homey ℞ December 30, 2008 11:47 am
    Want to increase gray matter? get rock band 2 or the other brand that has drums too. or go the cheap route and learn to juggle.
  599. homey ℞ December 30, 2008 11:48 am
  600. SteveM December 30, 2008 11:50 am
    This getting dangerously close to 600, homey…
    Bought the ET-3000 karaoke mic. This one is the least expensive and has a wire going to TV. The duet mic is another $90–it is wireless and comes with a wireless module that you place into the master mic.
  601. SteveM December 30, 2008 11:51 am
    oops 😳
  602. homey ℞ December 30, 2008 11:52 am
