I hope that UH decision makers realize that positive and negative attitudes are a reflection of the proponents and not necessarily a reflection of the reality that they must base their decisions on.

As for my choice to take the high road as much as possible, that stems from spiritual principles and are not kool-aid related:

Article about the difference in TV money for Utah and Utah State, showing how the finances in college football are changing. Remember, I posted figures a few months ago that showed that 2 years ago UH made more TV money than Washington State…the Pac-12’s new TV deal changes all of that.

If you go by some published reports, when Utah gets a full share of the Pac-12 TV money, they could be making 250x what Utah State will get from the WAC TV money!

Utah’s move to the Pac-12 is going to make the Utes rich on TV money. BYU’s move to independence is making the Cougars a lot richer than they were in the Mountain West.

Utah State, however, resides below the poverty line. And therein lies a fundamental flaw in college sports.

Next season, Utah will get at least 75 times more TV revenue than USU. Maybe 120 times more. And the Utes will be getting only a 50 percent share of Pac-12 money.

Tuioti, Rolo, and Smith were 3 of the Warrior coaches that ST mentioned who were flying around the country to recruit this season. I think that ST said that only 4 Warrior coaches recruit on the mainland, so they are UH’s link to mainland recruits and their families/coaches.

Unfortunately, given the nature of the profession, coaching changes, staff shake ups, not being retained, or getting a better offer are all part of being a college assistant. I don’t think any of the “young guns” on the UH coaching staff would want to be doing anything else as far as earning a living. I’m sure that whatever transpires after this season, Coach Arranda, Rolovich, Smith, and Tuioti will continue to develop and move up in the coaching profession.

Garret, if the PAC-12 reserves the 1st week in December for its championship game, what will the other 10 teams do during that week? Are their seasons over? Can UH make a deal with the conference that allows, say their 3rd or 4th place team play in Hawaii for their final regular season game? I know it would be a “last minute game” for whoever the PAC 12 qualifer is, but maybe some $$$ incentive can make it happen. Also, could this be done with other conferences for their last regular season game? If its their conference’s 3rd or 4th place team, then they wouldn’t be eligible for a BCS bowl game. Or UH could make a deal for a conference to send any team to Hawaii in the 1st week of December, not necessarily the 3rd or 4th place team. The different confrences could rotate the last game to make it PAC 12 next year, Big 12 the following year, SEC the year after that, etc.

From everything that I’ve heard from some folks and read from others, I agree with you. It was a shame when he was the recruiting coordinator last year and he couldn’t recruit off campus, but this year he has been able to travel for recruiting since he’s a position coach.

he was a coach last year, IIRC. it was 2 years ago and prior, when he was the RC. id be the RC for $50k/yr. hit me up Mack!

My mistake on when Tuioti switched from RC to position coach. Time sure flies!

I saw Tuioti speak at a Na Koa lunch and really respected how he presented things and how he approached things in such an organized way.

That is an interesting, out-of-the-box idea. You are correct that the teams who don’t make the conference title games have their regular seasons end. It would be great for UH, but I don’t see the benefit for the Pac-12, Big 12, and SEC.

Conferences are trying to reserve the final weekend of the season for their title games. Their conference TV deals don’t allow for the conference to get any extra money for some consolation game for the 3rd place team. Travel arrangements would also be very difficult, not just for the team but also for their fans.

Getting a 3rd place team to fly to Hawaii on short notice would be nearly impossible, could force the school to lose money since UH doesn’t pay much to visitors and last-minute travel costs are high, and couldn’t get any TV money. And UH cannot plat at the 3rd place team’s stadium because they cannot play anymore games that season.

Agree. Coach needs to “man up” and not be such a whiner. That display with the press after the NMSU win was pathetic and uninspiring IMHO.

Some fans are unhappy, but the people who make the decisions sure don’t seem to be. Texas played in the 2010 BCS National Championship game,then lost a great senior class and a bunch of juniors went pro early.

I lived in Austin for 9 years and know that people there are NEVER happy with losing to Oklahoma or any other school. I was there during movements to replace 2 head coaches (Akers and McWillians). But Mack Brown built up a lot of good will with all of those 10-win seasons, with his national title, with making the national title game 2 seasons ago, and with no NCAA violations or APR penalties. The money keeps rolling in and 100,000+ people pay for tickets to each game…while that happens Mack Brown isn’t getting fired.

maybe the ASPCA could hire coach mack and do a save the animals commercial with a sad song playing or letsgowarriors playing air violin in the background. 😆

MACK’s and any other future HC’s problem as always been the “obligation” to retain some asst. coaches due to loyalties or political connections. (Maybe its part of our culture?) When MACK was selected, he was obligated to retain the Lee brothers, Miano and Lumpkin. Mack has tried to hire “his own” folks by bringing on Aranda, Rolovich, the OL coach, RB coach, Tomey, and Tuioti. Clearly, we shouldn’t “handicap” any HC with such obligations when those assistants are “not performing” in some cases…(hint: I’ve always felt our DB coaching has sucked…)

I am still VERY supportive of MACK and his staff…I hope they will be able to salvage the season by winning the next three games. However, “stuff happens” in college football and who knows what truly lies ahead.

As I’ve indicated previously, I wish we had the luxury of “firing” fans, as we have some of the poorest in the nation…They all want “something for nothing” and will only support the team when their winning. Like marriages, you gotta be there for the good times and bad, if you want anything out of the relationship. The “fair-weather” ones always seem to jump on or off the bandwagon whenever the Kona winds arrive. Maybe, if we could “fire” those fans, then they will have some understanding and compassion for what our coaches/players/team go through…

I *love* County Line and love Salt Lick as much or possibly even more. The all-you-can-eat selection and quantity is amazing. I recruited for UT (EE graduate schools students) for 3 years and was able to take the students to 5 restaurants with full reimbursement…County Line was always one of them.

Garret: County LIne was great. Saw a couple of tables of very large “good ole boys” just quietly eating their plate of ribs – no talking, just eating. We also went to TEXAS LAND & CATTLE (love that name) which was another 2-3 notches on the belt after dinner. I’d probably died of a heart attack very soon if I were to move there.

People can believe in one MAN or a few, some opt to concern themselves with the future of the program and the athletic department as a whole and their concerns are based on compiling results.

NO INDIVIDUAL IS ABOVE ANY UH PROGRAM.

But I’ve already stated my opinion on idolization and over-worship over individuals.

Garret#44, since UH is paying for MWC teams’ travel, maybe we can make reservations and pay for one of the 3rd place teams from LAX and hotel here too, for say 100 people. Reservations could be made a year or more ahead of the game. All the opponent has to do is get to LAX. I’m sure that UH will charge a premium for seats to that game and even get it on tv on a late night spot, (although the MWC tv deal is not good, but could it be redone to include this as a seperate game deal?) Since UH would always be ending the season with a marquee team, I would be banking on a sellout or very close to one. Paying for travel for a marquee team would be better than paying for the last place MWC team to come here financially. It would be like a bowl game without a “bowl game” name, thus making it rewarding for both teams. The 3rd place game would probably be decided before their last game of the season. Tie breakers would be pre determined by their conference, such as victories against the 1st and 2nd place teams, points scored against the 2, least points allowed against the 2, and even a coin toss. Imagine the last regular season week. If team X wins, they will be in the championship game. If they lose, then there are headed for Hawaii. Team Y would also have a chance to go to Hawaii if team X wins and team Y wins by more than 17 points, or if team A upsets team B, etc., etc., etc.. This would make it more exciting for the opponents conferences, with more than 1 team that has a chance to go to Hawaii. I don’t think that Aloha Stadium needs to reserve a whole bunch of tickets for the opponent, since travel for thier fans would be at the last minute. Also, fans from a team that may be headed here may make reservations a head of time to guarantee them a spot at the game and hotels, airfare, etc. If their team doesn’t make it to Hawaii, then what would be wrong with a Hawaii vacation in December?

Coach Mack, I believe has the BIG PICTURE and has done an amazing balancing job because his eye is fixed on the success of the students under his watch… not just football, but also academics… and most of all… the development of character – which is best demonstrated by response to adversity.

What a beautiful day. I’m sure Jim Donovan is doing a lot of soul-searching. Maybe he’s making his X-mas list or huddling with Rockne Freitas or the Punahou Mafia. When it comes down to it, it’s a business and decisions have to be made. Donovan has to make the call. My worry is the recruiting and prospects on the fence. I’m sure Donovan is fully aware of that.

There is still lots of support for the University of Hawaii. The fans at the game are the most important ones because they spend money on tickets, food, and drinks at the stadium. But people like me who have been going to UH games since the 1960’s just have a hard time going to the game now. Thank God for PPV. Every UH game is like a Super Bowl party with friends, family and food cheering on the team. You may not see us at the stadium anymore, but we still love Hawaii.

i support but spoke to a few friends and co-workers and asked why they don’t go to the games. they said, no interest, boring, got better things to do, they junk, no excitement, too expensive, traffic, watch on tv, family.

even if its the only game in town there is a sense of apathy i detect from those that i talked to. seems like it even happens with the students. can’t even fill the student section even with all the freebies given to them. if uh can’t even get its own students to support then i don’t know. pretty pathetic.

For those of us that have attended the games this season, it will be irresponsible not to point out that the student section WAS at decent capacity PRIOR to the past USU game.

While not MAX capacity, it was filled MORE than previous seasons. With the student section three sections away from my seasons seats in the north end zone, these things I notice whether people believe it or not.

So with various rumors going around about why there were almost no students not allowed due to big fight near their section, which is STUPID because that big brawl did NOT INVOLVE STUDENTS…. who knows…

Pacman’s appearance at UH football this Saturday cancelled…

Warrior Mojo, I don’t get what you’re trying to say. If a coach is doing a perfect job, the public wouldn’t be negative. FACT!

In what world is Mack doing close to a perfect job?

1. He talks about how he is known for recruiting. If we are getting the top recruits in the WAC every year, then our coaches aren’t developing these players because we certainly aren’t at the top of the WAC standings.

2. Our coaching staff has succeeded at failing to make adjustments every single week. Where we fix 1 area, a new hole arises in another.

3. Coaches don’t turn over the football but damn it seems like nothing is being done to correct our fumbling miscues.

4. We play the WORST schedule in D1 football and we are a 500 ball club. Explain that without making injury excuses. We were losing before the injuries.

Any one that understands the importance of having a COMPETENT head coach knows Mack needs to go. The guy is just too old already and can’t even remember names at this point.

People are not all the same, whiners do what they do …. Everyone knows a whiner, friends co-workers, etc . They are usually avoided because who wants to hear the same rant over and over.

They could be called immature but in my opinion it goes beyond that.

In most cases they have a limited life, they have never played an organized sport beyond their couch, has no idea what teamwork is and gets their personal worth via the team they support etc.

A negative comment with a logical process behind it is not whining. What message boards/blogs have done is give these people a forum to voice their opinion, in the past it was usually only family and friends that had to deal with their rants. Ahhhh, progress….

Re apathy and attendance…

So many changes going on in the world… perhaps because the way we have been doing things is not addressing the needs of the age in which we live.

It’s hard not to draw parallels between our society and the Roman Empire just before it’s collapse. What we call sport has become an entertainment for the masses and the inevitable “I’m bored and moving on” syndrome is in play…

I’m a fan today because:

1. Warrior football led me to a group of diverse and generously kind people to whom love and support for the team took precedence over the artificial barriers (like race, economic status, religion, political preference, etc.) that have traditionally divided people.

2. I love encouraging young people who strive to achieve their dreams through excellence (not only football…) and hard work.

3. I have met some of the players and coaches and their families and consider them friends and ohana.

If extreme individual egotism, backbiting and disunity becomes the hallmark of this blog, or the Tsai-ko gatherings in general, I may not feel welcome and comfortable here.

If football as a game destroys more lives through injury, escalating violence, dehumanization, extreme egotism and greed, I will probably find something else to cheer for.

And then there is just plain old age… This year I’ll make the hike up to YELL-ow. Dunno about next year.

I’m with jeezy33. You cannot underestimate the importance of a good head coach. I.e. Jim Harbaugh, Sarkisian, Meyer, both Kellys, Peterson, Patterson, Mendenhall, etc. 0ne person at the top can make all the difference in the world. I think we need to get a “holy grail” coach. That’s Donovan’s job. It ain’t easy, but I would look for a younger coach who is an innovator and a good recruiter. These guys are hard to find, plus they have to love Hawaii.

I’ve been a season ticket holder since Dave Holmes was coach. I stopped under VonAppen, but I still get PPV because I can watch the game in the comfort of my home with feiends

As a former player, it would be only right to give Austin a shot. He has been with the program for 4 years and has paid his dues. Now, with that being said, if his play doesn’t give the warriors the best chance of winning. Then, graves or for that matter shutter should be given an opportunity.

What is your criteria of being, “innovative?” It’s kind of a broad ambiguous label at the moment. I’d like to hear your definition.

How would you gauge someone as being a good recruiter?

Define, liking or love for Hawaii? How is one judged by this beyond merely saying they love Hawaii? Would they need ties to the islands? Have prior experience demonstrating they’re culturally sensitive? Perhaps recruited and coached local kids with great success?

Do you have a current list of young, innovative, good recruiting, Holy Grail candidates? Perhaps you could beak each one down and demonstrate how each would fit your criteria and would be a better alternative than Mack.

There you guys go again… comparing coach salaries without taking cost of living adjustments into consideration. One mil here is not equal to one mil everywhere else. Period.

True story. The life of a college assistant football coach can change as quick as the weather. I had a buddy of mine who coached at a Big 10 school. When the head coach got fired, he pretty much went from making upwards of 200k per year to ZERO. He was not picked up by another school and the real life strain of maintaining a mortgage, a wife and three kids is beginning to take a toll on him. He so needs to be back in football.

In all due honesty, if we do see a new head coach, he’d need not think too hard about retaining Coach Tuioti.

You cannot argue against the fact that teams coached by coaches earning half of what our coach makes have wins over us. Is that the deciding factor? No. But shoots, it sure makes you feel bad when you look at it that way. Especially considering where the team was when that kind of money was granted and what it was supposed to mean to the program.

People always counter with the argument “look what Mack was left with” or “players left for the NFL” or whatever. Mike Leach got fired from texas tech because of allegations that he mistreated Craig James’ kid. The kid had a concussion, and a trainer supposedly put him in a closet due to sensitivity to light. Elder James was beeching to administration. They terminated him before he was supposed to get a bonus or raise. I think leach has a wrongful termination suit in court. Leach never had a losing season and I think he took his team to bowl games every year he was there.

How can you measure the success of these WAC coaches for Utah State and San Jose by one season? C’mon, will Utah State or San Jose beat us if we played them next season? I, for one, doubt it. But teams will get their “special” wins. That’s football. And we all know that the big bull’s eye was on the Warriors this season. Utah State and San Jose played each other to within 1 point and was decided in the last second in Utah… had the game been played in San Jose, maybe it would have gone the other way.

UNLV was the only game that I was utterly shocked about… the rest I had my concerns due to the injuries we had in key positions going into each game. I have to wonder, too. How long was Moniz’s foot bothering him? If he really crumbled on a non-contact play, you have to wonder if it wasn’t badly fractured some time prior to that.

coaches know that their job security is tenuous at best but they chose this profession Tsai, it is a fact Coaches are hired, only to be fired. Tsai , there are a lot of people in private industry that have families and lost jobs, coaches are no different.

The word from Lower Campus Road is if Hawaii doesn’t qualify for the bowl, Coach Mac is fired right after the BYU game, If Hawaii loses the bowl game, Coach Mac is fired the next day. Coach Mac knows what he needs to do. Regarding who plays QB – it’ll be who can lead us to victory because there aint no next year for Coach Mac if he loses.

In Looking to the Future

I have just submitted my application for the open position on the Stadium Authority.

It is my hope to bring the full community together on stadium issues, provide a sounding board for all concerns, and help shape a vision of taking us into the next several decades.

On land not impacted by the current CCR’s is a tech park part of the future? Is a mini-hotel part of the future? Concerts? What about links to the rail station and the vision that can be created there? Can we make the stadium self-sustaining?

UH needs a voice, Dept of Ed needs a voice, HHSSA needs a voice, and especially, the community needs a voice. My main goal is to provide an outreach to the community as submitted by the application this evening.

Transparency has been my mantra since we all started to share resources when I met many of you. It still is.

These are trying times in local/national/global arenas: economically, athletically, educationally, emotionally. However, here in this state WE have the University of Hawai’i Warriors and we can rally around the men and women athletes that compete for our University.

I am proud to be a graduate of the University of Hawai’i; I am proud to be a former Rainbow Warrior.

BCS Proposes Radical Changes

In meetings held this week in San Francisco, ESPN reports that the BCS might sever ties with the traditional BCS bowls and just concentrate on arranging the national championship game. There is also consideration of eliminating the AQ system! These proposals are radical but they have a chance of passing when further discussed in future meetings.

Just the talk of these possible changes will slow down or halt the conference re-alignments and movement of teams from one conference to another. If these changes do occur, the conferences and team alignments will ultimately be based upon geography and traditional opponents. This is huge for the conferences and teams in flux.

Coach Mack’s salary is paid for by the renenues the football team earns. This is why the argument some make that the money spent on football should be spent on other things is a misinformed one. No football team means no revenue which equals and athletic department consisting of just two teams, women’s volleyball and men’s basketball.

The BCS will select the top two teams to play each other in a national championship game and the major bowls (Rose Bowl) can choose who they want to be in their bowls. This almost guarantees that non traditional football teams will have no chance at playing in a major bowl. These guys are taking the fans for fools again.

Those that want Mack fired make it sound like winning is the only criteria for being a good Head Coach. I see it as being much more than that. The Head Coach has to make sure that the “student” in “student athlete” always come first. Win or lose. Making sure the APR for the football team is ahead of the curve (945) at all times. The Head Coach has to make sure that everything is in compliance and recruit the best “FIT” players for the team personality wise whiles still addressing the most needed areas first before extending offers to all other high profile players. The Head Coach doesn’t play up to popularity contests when recruiting, but rather what’s best for the team. The Head Coach needs to bring in the right assistants and shoulder the responsibilities should they or his players screw up. He works with the community, volunteers his time, is approachable and has the respect of his players.

For the past three years people have been happy with his recruiting… for the past three years we have gone to two bowl games. Last year everyone was happy with the record and greedily wanted even more. Our personal penalties as a team are much less than before. We still get our fair share of players into the NFL and a lot of others get good looks from the NFL, CFL and Arena football, as well.

We’re having an off year… lots of injuries… including season ending ones for at least two starters… we also have a former starter banned from playing till the bowl game. But like Trevor Davis, there are many bright stars ready to hit the lights come next season. Trevor is just a sampling. The Oline looks to be the best we have had in a long time. The receiving corps will be experienced because of this season’s musical chair of injuries in that department. Quarterback… pick and choose… they all all good… come fall… at least one will be outstanding… the running back? We got two really good ones in the making and several exciting potentials in the waiting… Offensively, next season, we are stacked deep enough to be frightfully good… even in the MWC.

Defensively, we need to bolster a couple of areas.. and we see Mack already tendering the offers to a couple of JC players to add some depth to those needs.

The Win/Loss record is but one facet of coaching… but by doing what Mack has been doing in the other areas, I am confident that the Wins will come and will come in a landslide next season and the seasons to follow.

Offensively, below average for the offense we run. I talk highly about guys who deserve to be talked highly about. I was high on Trevor Davis, Vele, Promise Amadi, and Muir. Obviously those guys aren’t supposed to make huge contributions yet but Macks recruits of 3 years ago arent helping at all.

Our O line has sucked ever since he has been here.
