And justice for all …

Now that Herman Frazier has returned to his hometown as Temple’s associate AD, the key figures in January’s drama have all found perfect fits.
Jim Donovan was the right choice to succeed Frazier as UH’s AD. June Jones and Greg McMackin get to run football programs. And Frazier gets to start over — with the help of his $300,000-plus UH buyout — in a city that he not only knows well but regards him as a hero.

* * *

It’s human nature to seek the silver lining in cloudy circumstances. UH fans have been looking for some hope — any hope — in the news that Blaze Soares and Rocky Savaiigaea will miss several weeks because of injuries.
What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.
Things happen for a reason.
A medical hardship will make them fresher for next year.
Setbacks lead to comebacks.

But sometimes dark clouds mean bad weather. That’s it. Dress it up anyway, the Warriors need both players. Soares is football’s eqiuvalent of the brushback pitch. Opponents are more cautious when Soares is on the field. And Savaiigaea brings that enthusiasm that lifts defenses.
Maybe Savaiigaea said it best: “It sucks.”

Here’s Rocky with his left arm in a cast (beneath the white shirt):

Happy birthday to Kelli Miura and Erika Buder-Nakasone. Kelli will be making her public singing debut Saturday at our karaoke party. Buder-Nakasone is forever our favorite for her dancing rendition of Crazy Legs’ “Happy And You Know It” routine at UH basketball games.

I guess we will be seeing Temple in a BCS game soon??

  2. Stephen Tsai August 13, 2008 8:01 am

What will happen first: Temple in a BCS game or me showing up on time for a UH practice?

    Temple. 😆

  6. Stretch August 13, 2008 8:03 am

Another “silver lining” for these two guys is that it isn’t their Sr year. It would be crap if their was their last year of eligibility.

  7. gigi-hawaii © August 13, 2008 8:04 am

Wow, both Temple and SMU as future UH opponents? Would be exciting!

  8. Maverick August 13, 2008 8:04 am

    News Flash –
Temple will be changing their schedule to accomodate Two AA games per season, just so they can try and go bowling. What a novel idea. Wonder who thought of that one.

I agree with expat and bhf2, TEMPLE.

  18. Garret August 13, 2008 8:24 am

Article on Te’o and other top recruits.

The striking part about this year’s No 1. outside and overall linebacker prospect is that he fits the aforementioned speed and explosiveness attributes but actually checks in at solid 6-foot-2, 230 pounds. Manti Te’o (Honolulu/Punahou School) is one of the better overall football prospects to come out of Hawaii in recent years, and we project he will be wreaking havoc in the continenal U.S. the moment he straps on the pads. It’s very difficult to find many physical weaknesses in Te’o’s game at outside linebacker; he shows awesome power and strength at the point of attack and displays great burst and closing quickness, blowing up plays on the perimeter. One of the top undecided prospects in the country, Te’o has the measurables and coveted scheme versatility to develop into an outstanding strong or inside linebacker at the next level.

Te’o and Jenkins are both top-10 overall prospects in our recently released ESPNU 150 and currently are two of the most coveted, undecided defenders in the country.

The Maui News had a mention of Mana Rosa and his UH offer.

Rosa broke his arm at the Just Win Camp in June, but he had a smile on his face at Baldwin’s practice Tuesday after learning Saturday that he is the first MIL football player to receive a scholarship offer from the University of Hawaii since former Lahainaluna offensive lineman Lui Fuata finished at UH in 2002.

Hawaii joins Utah and Nevada-Las Vegas on the list of schools to have offered scholarships to Rosa. Baldwin coach A.J. Roloos gave Rosa the letter from UH offering the scholarship on Saturday after he got a call from Warriors assistant coach Rich Miano last week.

”I’m keeping my options open right now,” Rosa said. ”I hope to make a decision about midseason. UH is close to home, a lot of guys want to go to UH because it is in Hawaii and they support the Hawaiians and all that. My mom said, ‘Oh yeah, UH is a good place to go. You can come home.’ I can see them whenever I want and they can see my games, so that would be an advantage. I hope they start looking at the MIL more now and maybe help out some more guys. I think we are pretty good here on Maui.”

Rosa, who will also see time for the Bears at tight end, is the 15th-ranked player on the Rivals.com Northwest Hot 100 List, for prospects from Hawaii, Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Utah. He is joined on the Baldwin roster by Jordan Puu-Robinson, another defensive end-tight end who transferred from Kamehameha Maui and is the No. 37 player on the same list.

  22. Garret August 13, 2008 8:28 am

Part of the reason Colt struggled in his last preseason game is that he’s injured.

Part of Brennan’s struggles stemmed from a lingering hamstring injury that forced him to skip the team portion of practice one day last week.

“The first game [against Indianapolis], the last play I was in I kind of landed awkwardly kind of right where the base of my butt and hamstring are, and it just inflamed that hamstring injury that I had,” Brennan said. “It made it hard to practice last week, and during the game I was worried it might give out or blow out on me.”

After a weekend of rehab, Brennan said he’s moving around better at practice. He hopes to find some consistency and improve his decision-making during the next three weeks.

  23. Garret August 13, 2008 8:29 am

I’ll be at the Oregon State game to watch this writer being proved wrong.

    Sep. 13 vs. Hawaii: Win

Although the Warriors had a successful season in 2007, it is hard to see them doing it again. With the departure of June Jones and Colt Brennan, Hawaii is in a rebuilding year. This game is at Reser, and it would take a miracle for Hawaii to pull this one out. Another win for the Beavers.

  24. SteveM August 13, 2008 8:31 am

    Good Morning everyone!

I will play the frequency odds and put my money on ST– after all, there are more practices than football miracles so it could happen.

ESPN The Magazine has an article on the student sections at college football games.

Florida was said to have the loudest student section.

    1. Florida

ESPN analyst Lou Holtz: “It’s just sheer numbers. Your offense is driving late in the game, and you hit this wall of sound.

Funny how the student section demoralized a team from their SEC rival Tennessee.

And down in The Swamp at Florida, the Gator Chomp gets all the pub, but it’s a lunatic student section cheerleader called Mr. 2-Bits and the rendition of “We Are the Boys From Old Florida” between the third and fourth quarters that do the most damage. “We were driving at the end of the third in 1991,” recalls Vols QB-turned-U.S. congressman Heath Shuler. “Then they stood up and did that song during the break, and one of my teammates said, ‘We’re screwed.’ “

Florida was also selected as having the 2nd nastiest student section.

It appears undrafted rookie receiver Davone Bess has taken over as the Dolphins primary slot reciever, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

    Our View

only kidding about your horsie ok? no get nutz on me today…just trying to add something to the banter here.

rocky and blaze, that sucks, i agree. interesting Falemalu is stepping up already! i think i was one of the first to suggest that Paipai would see considerable time this season on the field, he has all the tools, the attitude, the desire. the only thing keeping him off of the field is the knowledge of his assignments…as detailed in the article.

good luck in rehab to both rocky and blaze. rocky is a hard luck story, trains hard in the off season, works with HS football players, gives back to the community and now this.

blaze, off season training should not include the chinese dish of
beefing and clubbing’, but either way, getting injured is no fun for anyone. a speedy recovery to both.

The large room at the Young Street Krazy Karaoke holds at least 55 persons. STRETCH has made the reservation and put down the deposits.

Same arrangement as last April 19’s Krazy Karaoke Call

    • bring your own drinks (this room has a lot more cooler space)
    • bring snacks and pupu’s (optional)
    • $15 per person to cover room rental/karaoke
    • pay Stretch or designee at the door that night

    Current RSVP Count = 50

I will be listing the meal/pupu/goody potluck items that attendees might voluntarily bring to the Karaoke Call so everyone can see the overall “menu”. Not everyone should bring food, otherwise we will have too much–so don’t feel you must bring something.

Please email me with your tentative food item or speciality dish (hint, hint). I will list it in the Events calendar section above.

  35. SteveM August 13, 2008 9:42 am

Misc. Notes for the Saturday Karaoke Call

    • Parking should not be a problem with the large parking lots.

    • Any carpooling and Designated Driver arrangement are probably already made, but it you are looking for a DD, please post request on blog.

•The large (green) room has a lot of space but ice chest “pooling” recommended.

We may enter the room at around 7:45 PM

Mrs. Bulla and d1shima will be entering songs into the system per my request (like the April 19 KK call). We will have colored paper slips for writing song requests. Turn in song requests to Mrs. Bulla or d1shima.

    • Mrs. Bulla and the Jager Bombers will set in the front half of room for song input –also the Bomber table. All Tsai-kettes invited to stop by 🙂

Bulla is setting up and tending a speciality drinks bar with assistance from Rob25 and homey and has requested a back corner.

WreckinEyez is rumored to have something interesting to set up in the other back corner…

    • Attempts to gather a food list has largely failed so far, but please, only 1 bunch of watercress (don’t over-feed Bulla). Go ahead and bring your food/pupus…we’ll probably go to 1:00 AM and need the midnight fuud. 🙂

    • Standby for a possible semi-organized singing program at around 10:30 PM. Maybe. Solos, duets, small group, etc. — maybe. Did I say “maybe”? 😕

Interesting to read what Ohio State used as a recruiting pitch for QB Sanchez.

As a junior at Mission Viejo High, playing for QB guru Bob Johnson (father of former NFL and USC QB Rob Johnson), Sanchez threw 29 TDs and just seven picks. Because of his smarts and arm, every school in the country was after him. There were dalliances with Texas, Notre Dame, Nebraska and Ohio State. Sanchez remembers Jim Tressel sitting behind his desk in the Buckeyes’ football office, delivering his pitch: “Mark, you know the two most important people in the state of Ohio are the governor and the quarterback for Ohio State.”

Tressel then paused before adding, “And the quarterback for Ohio State is No. 1.”

  52. Joel August 13, 2008 10:30 am

“It sucks” that Blaze Soares and Rocky Savaiigaea will miss several weeks because of injuries. However, this is an important issue that separates the best from the rest. At Florida, when a star is injured there are others on the bench to fill in. For Hawaii to stay on top, they need deep bench play.

I have no knowledge of how much Tebow will play, but look out for a young backup by the name of Brantely. Brantely comes from football pedigree and is suppose to be great.

  53. Kazz August 13, 2008 10:31 am

  68. Da Punchbowl Kid August 13, 2008 10:45 am

It’s a sad thing about Rocky and Blaze for sure. I say, if they miss more than five games or so, and their running mates at LB and DL are playing well, then maybe the medical hardship option should be considered. The bottom line is, adversity makes good teams better. The Warriors can overcome the loss of these two key players, because they ARE a good team, and they are only going to get better. IMHO.

  69. Rob25 August 13, 2008 10:46 am

Just a note…Kazz’z favorite broadcaster was in usual form today. I tuned in and he is talking to some guy saying that he doesn’t think Colt will ever be a starting QB in the NFL.

Can this guy ever find something positive to say about UH or its athletes?

I was so disgusted that I had to tune to BC…who I’m not a big fan of either.

They are the reason that I gravitated towards this blog. There is a wealth of information here. People are more positive…not delusional…OK some might be…but generally realistic. I like to hear both sides of the argument and also the tidbits of information that people have found. Thanks to everyone for their contributions that make this blog great!

My hotel is somewhere near there so I’m thinking this is what I’m gonna do instead of trying to find parking closer to the stadium. I guess I could even walk to the stadium on gameday except for #1 the heat and #2 having to walk past frat house row. Thanks for your help.

    Hi djmitcho!

Yes, I’ve gotten your emails. I’m guessing this means you didn’t get my response. 🙁 Anyway, I’m going to order the tickets. I’m just waiting to see if anyone else wants to join us so we can get seats together. I will let you know as soon as I order them.

Oh I forgot…thanks for reminding me Kazz…I have faith in ST. He’ll make it to practice on time…at least he beats me.

My prayers are with you Rainbow Cliff…remember that you are never alone in this.

    LOL at Kazz.

So, is UA changing our helmet design too? I notice that Rinbowtique doesn’t have the full size or mini helmets for sale anymore.

  76. Kazz August 13, 2008 10:56 am

    Rob25,

Hahahahahaha!!! I have the radio in my living room set to 1500am automatically and of course I have to change it to KKEA on Wednesdays but today was a “pass” as Jim Donovan was on answering calls.

But yeah usually I have to pick the lesser of two evils and with Fall Practice in full swing at least there is more UH football talk. Last season some people thought BC was WAY too much of a “homer” for UH (even though he thought we’d never go 12-0), but compared to “da kine” that’s WAY more “positive” than the drivel on 1500AM on Wednesdays.

BTW, I am becoming MORE and MORE of a fan of Rob and Russ and I think they have taken the lead over L&L… (sad to say).

    WarriorMojo,

Nah UA is not touching the helmet design.

Rainbowtique is just behind the bar in a lot of merchandising ideas.

However if you want mini helmets and/or full sized helmets:

    http://www.prideofhawaiisports.com

This is where I got that my Colt helmets, the helmet decals, etc from in the past.

Plus this is the best place for us locals to buy quality Colt Redskins jerseys.

No, I am not related or friends with the people that run this site, but as they say “satisfied customers are the best free advertisement available”.

  90. Bulla August 13, 2008 11:28 am

    Mav,

in inner city schools, the word woud be yoratio…as in the sentence, ‘….mother—-, what is yoratio of bullets to crackahz…’

    yoratio

in alabama, yoratio would be heard in the following sentence…

‘…uncle billy boy, yoratio kind of guy, wanting ellie may to stay home and not go out wit Tyrone….’

    yoratio

  113. Stretch August 13, 2008 12:25 pm

Loa – okay, just got the phone call.

Team was in full pads today. Sorry for those waiting for tomorrow.

Walking wounded doing exercises on the sidelines, keeping in shape, staying busy rather than just sit around and watching. Blaze was not seen on the practice field. Rocky was there with his left arm in a cast but did the running with the rest of the team.

W-Mojo – You would have been a little sad today, Pepa had his pads off and didn’t participate in the drills. Not sure how long he was out, noticed only when they started the short session of one on one drills. Not sure what’s wrong.

Ah Soon was played some at center today, his snaps seemed cleaner and more consisitant than the other back ups.

QB’s are still getting equal snaps although I am sure there is already a favorite in the coaches minds.

Receivers/DB’s had their own short one on one session. The DB’s did all right but not sure what will happen with the quicker, taller receivers Florida has.

  114. Joel August 13, 2008 12:39 pm

    WarriorMojo,

“What do you think of parking at the park and ride lot on SW 34th Street and catching the Gator shutttle to the game?”
Gator shuttle is a great way to get to and from the game. Before the game the shuttle operation is smooth where as at the end of the game the shuttle service is hectic as thousands of fans leave the stadium. Leave the game early or catch the shuttle when the crowd has cleared.

“My hotel is somewhere near there so I’m thinking this is what I’m gonna do instead of trying to find parking closer to the stadium. ”
If you are staying at the Hilton on SW34th, then you are staying at the official UF hotel and the only full service one in town. The hotel must have a shuttle for their guests to the game, it’s a high end place.

“I guess I could even walk to the stadium on gameday except for #1 the heat and #2 having to walk past frat house row.”
The stadium is about 3 miles away from SW34th Street. If you have time and want to take in some sights, then walking is not a bad idea. The campus is beautiful and full of interesting things to see. It will be more humid than hot, and yes frat row will be crazy.

Kelli: My birthday, a bunch of us went to Les Murakami Stadium for Senior Night. I guess that’s a UH-themed birthday. After, we went to TJ’s, where I had the aforementioned water and 7-Up. 😀

Next thing you know it will be 2008 already!

    We’ll talk on Saturday… 🙄
(go sleep tonite, wake up, go sleep, wake up, go sleep, wake up and we talk 😉 )

  152. Stephen Tsai August 13, 2008 2:07 pm

Actually, the original schedule I have says full pads for today. Maybe I forgot to type it in.
It wasn’t a big deal. The only addition, as far as we could figure, was hip pads. They still practiced the same way.

  153. Stephen Tsai August 13, 2008 2:08 pm

“Ferd” says HF is in charge of basketball and football scheduling.

  154. Mike August 13, 2008 2:10 pm

HF is a pro at conning.

  155. Stretch August 13, 2008 2:10 pm

    Re: Cadiz Parents

When ST retires from the HA, his part time job should be as a Private Investigator. He saw a man and lady sitting on the sidelines and knew right away that they were Cadiz’s parents without ever meeting them before. Simply amazing!!

  156. d1島 August 13, 2008 2:10 pm

I’m wondering if you flipped that picture of the receivers a certain way if you could caption it differently?

  157. d1島 August 13, 2008 2:12 pm

Who was standing to your left when you took the last pic? Must have been someone real interesting.

  158. Mike August 13, 2008 2:12 pm

Darn, I wish Chaney were still there. If he thought Calipari was annoying, he’d totally throttle Herman.

  160. homey ⑤ August 13, 2008 2:15 pm

Stretch – I know what Cadiz’s parents look like! The dad is a teacher at Mililani…eh, he cut class today!

  161. Maverick August 13, 2008 2:16 pm

    Dang –

Is there really a cast under Rocky’s sleeve ?
Bullwinkle sez, ” Looks just like the other sleeve.” Har Har

Did they have enough plaster and gauze to wrap those tree trunks?

  162. d1島 August 13, 2008 2:16 pm

Thanks for the explanation about full-pads.

You’re gonna make me go back on my word:
Basketball and football SCHEDULING? I can picture Bill Cosby doing his eye-roll right now! 🙄

  163. homey ⑤ August 13, 2008 2:17 pm

Bulla – u da man! BTW, I’m staring at that J-green bottle and thinking of those bomber freaks.

  164. Mike August 13, 2008 2:17 pm

Stretch is right. Leila was standing off to the left when Big Bro took that pic. Of course, so was Derek.

  165. d1島 August 13, 2008 2:18 pm

    Stretch,
Bingo! Dats wat I was tinking!

  167. d1島 August 13, 2008 2:20 pm

    Mike,

Did you “catch ride” to practice today?

  168. chawan_cut August 13, 2008 2:21 pm

ok, for the band geeks out there…

  169. homey ⑤ August 13, 2008 2:28 pm

chawan – I wouldn’t mind the ukulele hero shirt. Let me know if you are going to order something and I will split the cost of shipping with you.

  170. Stretch August 13, 2008 2:28 pm

Speaking of the band, I always thought that they should wear a shirt when they are not wearing the uniform tops outside of the pregame and halftime shows. They look a little silly wearing the pants with suspenders on in the stands during the game. Why not wear at least the green polo shirts or something??

  171. homey ⑤ August 13, 2008 2:29 pm

    Happy Birthday Kelli!

  172. Mike August 13, 2008 2:29 pm

D1: Nah, I rode my damaged bike over. Don’t tell management.

So, sometimes it pays to be a media bully. The towing company sent me a letter saying my bike was damaged before they towed it so they weren’t going to pay for the repair. (This despite the fact that they couldn’t have known that my lock was broken since the damage isn’t visible from the outside.) So I called up and not so subtly hinted that I was very interested in writing a series of articles about tow company abuses. They called me back five minutes later to tell me that there had been a “miscommunication” with their driver and that they would indeed pay for the repair. If they needed lessons on stonewalling and deception, they should have contacted our admin services and HR folks.

I worry if it was because of Derek.

  174. homey ⑤ August 13, 2008 2:31 pm

Is it going to rain at tomorrow morning’s practice? Just my luck.

  175. Curious Onlooker August 13, 2008 2:33 pm

    Hello folks,
Just curious about mr long time uh fan; i heard your name at the banquet and wondering if you are the same person i wrote to years ago. Are you FP the former assistant secretary of defense appointed by president clinton? If so thank you very much for assisting me in resolving my problem; if not, hope I haven’t offended you in any way. I heard you talking to you friends about the warrior beat. Thanks for your time.

  176. Mike August 13, 2008 2:34 pm

Derek should be the worried one…

  177. Bulla August 13, 2008 2:37 pm

    manoa,

not a lot of them hangin and bangin, but enough to make it a problem. even the ones that were on the recruiting trip couldn’t wait to go to the club….on kuhio, upstairs, starts with a Z….., ran into 4 of them at 1130 pm, and asked them what you doing? they said, going to the club….it’s still early…..sheeesh.

maybe the allure of waikiki is too great for those with no discipline, i don’t know, but as in the past there have been problems in the late 70’s and 80’s and 90’s, so it remains.

  178. d1島 August 13, 2008 2:38 pm

    Mike,

Hope you get things worked out favorably with the bike.

Since you were at practice and you are not THE beat writer, would you care to offer any insights or impressions?

    I’m impressed Mike!

  181. d1島 August 13, 2008 2:41 pm

    bulla,

Maybe you solved the riddle of why practice started earlier than scheduled on Saturday.

  182. gigi-hawaii © August 13, 2008 2:44 pm

    Stretch,

Re your offer to videotape and analyze mine and hubby’s golf swing

I think we are impressed by Pacific Golf Academy’s computer-generated analysis, so we will go there, instead. Thanks for the offer, though.

  183. gigi-hawaii © August 13, 2008 2:46 pm

Re Kua Aina Sandwich Shop at Ward Center. Hubby was so impressed by the amount of money OBAMA spent there, he wants to try their burgers and fries on Sunday. Obama left a $40 tip!

    haha

Talk about the power of suggestion!

  184. d1島 August 13, 2008 2:47 pm

There is not much analyzing until you find a swing.

  185. Mike August 13, 2008 2:49 pm

Dunno, Homey, empty shell casings seem a lot more compelling to me…

D1, unfortunately, I had to meet with the insurance adjuster this morning so I only caught the last few minutes of practice. The one thing that struck me as strange was that Keoni Steinhoff was sitting on the side suffering from dehydration but couldn’t seem to get anyone to give him some Gatorade. Still gave a very coherent interview, though.

Also, the receivers actually had to call ST over to take a pic of them doing their post-practice stretching: “Yo, where’s Stephen Tsai and his camera?”

  186. homey ⑤ August 13, 2008 2:50 pm

gigi – I’m with Stretch. After viewing the gigi’s swings you don’t need a computer to tell you what is wrong. In my opinion it would be better to get lessons from a pro and then fine tune your swings through video analysis. But that’s just me because I see nothing wrong with my golf swing. 😆

  187. Mike August 13, 2008 2:50 pm

Gigi, tell hubby to go to the original on the NS. Maybe it’s just the proximity to the beach, but the burgers always seem to taste better there.

  188. WarriorMojo August 13, 2008 2:51 pm

Joel, thank you very much for your feedback. It’s most appreciated.

Okay, I just spoke to the UH ticket office and was told that UH was alloted tickets for the Florida game in sections 43, 44 and 45. According to seating charts, section 44 is lower level along the visitor’s sideline, but in line with the endzone. The other two sections are upper level at an angle to the endzone. The prime lower level sections behind the visitor’s bench are 34, 36, 38 and 40.

For Oregon State, UH was given tickets in sections 211, 212, 213, 225, 226, and 227. According to the seating charts I see, all of these tickets suck! They are all UPPER level, at ANGLES to the field, in the ENDZONE, and on the BEAVER sideline!

Anyone interested in looking for alternative (better) seats for these games? Might be pricey.

  189. chawan_cut August 13, 2008 2:52 pm

    stretch,

they do wear a “uniform” band under shirt. Its got the H on the front and “marching band” or something like that on the back.

they wear that green polo shirt if they’re not marching in the halftime and there’s a high school band playing instead.

  190. Bulla August 13, 2008 2:53 pm

  191. Stephen Tsai August 13, 2008 2:53 pm

    Stretch is correct.
I do have some detective skills.
I looked at the couple, and judging from the way they were positioned and the rotation of the Earth and the wind blowing a certain way, I was able to correctly conclude that they were Cadiz’s parents.
Oh, one other thing: Pop was wearing a shirt with “Cadiz” on the back.

  218. Kazz August 13, 2008 3:18 pm

    WarriorMojo,

HOLY COW!!! I almost had to restrain myself looking at those pics (UA Merchandise at the Bookstore).

So… I did some “snooping” and spoke with someone there and apparently the Rainbowtique locations are supplied by the bookstore and they get their merchandise FIRST as well as some other items not available elsewhere.

Now those dark green tees are available at the Ward location (I called them) but I couldn’t ID the rest of the stuff in those photos.

I asked the girl I was talking to about the arrival time for the UA jerseys and she said she will have to have the person who makes the orders call me back.

    SO… STAY TUNED!!!!

    (Pauoa Boy, still get hope!!!)

Last time I ate them I had the flu the next day. Now I know they didn’t cause it as I was already feeling funky before I ate them but it was the WORST flu I ever had and I now associate them with illness.

    Thank God for Tamaflu.

Know what I miss tho? CHILI CHEESE CURLY FRIES!!!!!

  224. Kazz August 13, 2008 3:25 pm

Geckos to start getting into game prep after this morning’s scrimmage.

Now that UF’s first scrimmage is out of the way, Meyer said the focus is solely on Hawaii. The coaches and players will begin game planning for the Warriors this afternoon and should get a good sense of what the depth chart will look like come Aug. 30.

“We break up into scout teams this afternoon and we’re actually going to start putting in the Hawaii game plan as we get going,” Meyer said. “We’re trying to get an early jump. When you have some returning starters like we had last year, obviously you’re just trying to get guys lined up and play, but we’re a little more advanced this year. You have a lot of guys who’ve played some football here. It’s time to hit the accelerator. We’re on game planning now and I think we’re kind of set on who’s playing and now it’s just accelerate and go.”

  233. homey ⑤ August 13, 2008 3:38 pm

gigi – Nah, I don’t think so. Same as the golf courses that Obama plays on. They won’t be crowded and people aren’t going to be trying to get their kids into Punahou in hopes that one day they will become a US Senator or Presidential Candidate.

But hey, I can tell my future grandchildren that I was on the same practice field as Colt Brennan and spoke with him after practice! 😆

  234. d1島: August 13, 2008 3:39 pm

Coming off the scrimmage, their DC liked what he saw.

The Gators’ defense, a huge question mark entering preseason camp, also looked sharp.

“We played better today than at any time last season,” defensive coordinator Charlie Strong said.

  235. homey ⑤ August 13, 2008 3:42 pm

d1島 – I hope UF’s defense is in tip top shape because then there will be no excuses when the Warriors score often on them.

  236. d1島: August 13, 2008 3:42 pm

Obviously they know who their #1 QB is but they may not know who will share some of the load until game day.

A back up to junior quarterback Tim Tebow has yet to be named, but after Wednesday’s scrimmage it looks as though it won’t happen for a while. Meyer said he limited Tebow during the scrimmage so he could get a better look at the players behind him. While Meyer called his younger quarterbacks play “sporadic,” he said each did well and it’s possible the No. 2 guy won’t be known until he jogs out onto the field against Hawaii.

“I think they’re both good players and we actually want to play (two quarterbacks this season),” he said. “Cameron (Newton) is a guy that played for us last year. We actually had him be live in our red zone today. Maybe (he will) take some of the burden off of ‘15.’ … Brantley looked like a deer in the headlights and then finished real strong. I mean, real strong. Once (you) smack the cobwebs out of him he was good. He had some great plays.”

  237. d1島: August 13, 2008 3:45 pm

  243. Kazz August 13, 2008 3:53 pm

    D1,

    Coach speak… coach speak.

That’s all I see. For the longest time I have felt that Florida and some teams in that “category” plan to see how they can get a “W” with as little as possible.

The rumor of Meyer planning to play Tebow for only the first half, well, I believe it will be true.

The only planning I suspect Florida is doing or planning on doing is how to win with as much little risk to their starters.

Could be an Alabama 2006 type game again and while this the 2006 Alabama squad pales in comparison to the 2008 Florida Gators, it’s the mindset that I suspect they have that could result in a much better game than people think.

If I am wrong and they win by as many TDs as people suspect then I will gladly eat my words and tip my hat to the better team.

For now, I smile reading comments like that.

    Coach speak… coach speak.

  244. homey ⑤ August 13, 2008 3:54 pm

Hope Manti Te’o is enjoying his favorite beaches, hiking trails, and other hangouts because if he goes to school on the mainland and expects to get into the NFL he is facing 13-15 years of seeing very little of Hawaii. With college football stressing summer workouts now, even summers are bound to be spent on the mainland. Then of course you buy a house in the pros, discover all your old friends have changed…… get married, have kids….. blatant propaganda but worth thinking about.

Or is that me I’m writing about?

Pretty hard to gauge how we’ll do in the swamp simply because of the amount of changes from 07 to 08 squad. If Florida’s mindset is that UH is a cupcake team then so be it. After the UGA game can you blame them?

Not to mention looking at us they see: the guy who was looking to take over for Colt is ineligible, Blaze is out, yadayada.

Here’s to UH sneaking up on UF and at least making the gators a bit nervous by making it a close game, or even pulling off the improbable victory.

    Re: Davone Bess

I already knew this was bound to happen. I’m sure Davone will soon make a move to lineup with Ted Ginn Jr. and start. Miami receivers suck ballsacks and we all know what Davone can do. He has the hands and ability to be a productive NFL receiver no doubt.

    Re: Paipai Falemalu

At first I would hope to have him redshirt and get settled in and dominate his following 4 years of football, but knowing how good he already is…nevamind. I think he was an outstanding pick up for us and he is better than advertised. Watching him during unsupervised workouts, he really has a knack for the LB position, saw many tipped balls and a few interceptions from him. He may still be raw, but I envision Paipai turning into a dominating beast at LB and obliterating all who cross his path. The playing experience he will get this year will pay big dividends when the Bash Brothers Adam and Solly graduate…

  251. NYUH August 13, 2008 4:15 pm

Steven sets the right tone for HF talk, despite the “silver lining” tone.

Now that Herman Frazier has returned to his hometown as Temple’s associate AD, the key figures in January’s drama have all found perfect fits.

Need to let that guy go.

    Re: Quarterbacks

Can somebody drop a hint or what? Feels like one of those shows were the announcer takes his sweet arse time to announce the winner and you just want to kick him in the frikkin balls and say who already. Not that I would want to do that literally but the anticipation of knowing who our QB is this year is nerve racking. I’m pulling for Funaki, but wouldn’t mind either Greg or Brent starting if that was the case. Either way good luck to all three and may the best man win!!!

paipai is da reason i ain’t 2 worried bout manti. i know manti’s a once in a decade player but i feel paipai is pretty good in his own right. and if you look at our LB’s in da coming years, we look to be pretty good

next year got Paipai, TJ Alofipo, Brashton and Blaze, etc. Would be nice to bring in dat Lopati kid from Kapolei, he seems to be a stud 2.

now don’t get me wrong, dis is not a post against manti, by all means if by that slightest chance he does come, biggest recruit hands down in da history of our program, just a post to say how excited i am about our LB core in da future already 🙂

    K shoots bye sis…

da princess’ classmate, I’m with you on that one. Paipai is going to be mean. TJ Alofipo going be mean, plus no forget Po’okela, Mana, Waylon, Art, Kaleo, Andrews…etc… not worried either. But Manti would solidify dat group and plus with Paipai and TJ being big guys they might even move to the DLine once they get on the weight training program with Coach Mel.

    RE: QB’s umm…

Shane Austin and Steele-bo Jantz will be very good for us in the years to come.

Honestly speaking I have had a hard time “judging” QBs and this past Saturday no one really stood out, but Austin had some nice throws with good mana behind a lot of them.

Sure some of his decision-making needs work as he seemed to panic a few times but he’ll get his share of reps and will be a serious contender in the future to the likes of Raush (JR by 09 SR by 10), Neilsen, Jantz, etc…

  262. J-Dog August 13, 2008 4:39 pm

  264. Pauoa Boy August 13, 2008 4:42 pm

The reason the QB race seems so close is cause all the QB’s can make the throws and are pretty mobile, so physically they are all about equal and no I not talking size either! So I think what Coach Mack and Coach Rolo are looking for are what else can they bring to the table, like leadership and all that. At least we know we have a pretty good group of QB’s and either one can start. Still the unknown is getting irraz!!!

  265. J-Dog August 13, 2008 4:42 pm

30 Biggest Early Season Out of Conference Games

    16. Hawaii @ Florida
    – Another game that would look better a season ago, but still intriguing nonetheless. Hawaii will be trying to show that it was more than just the Colt Brennan Show, and also have a better showing against an SEC school. Florida on the other hand, will simply be trying to make an early season example out of Hawaii.

  277. Kazz August 13, 2008 5:32 pm

    Mav,

With the QB talk, gotta hope for Rolo to be on as the guest.

  278. Jason August 13, 2008 5:32 pm

NYUH: More than likely, Solly projects to the NFL as an outside linebacker. I’m not saying he can’t play inside, but he is pretty small for the position. Look at London Fletcher, one of the smaller MLBs in the league — he may be 5’10”, but he is 245 lbs. I think once Solly gets into an NFL weight room, he can get up to 235 as a decent weight.

The move will probablly help Solly, as NFL teams will be able to get film on him as an OLB. Then depending on the system, teams can project him inside or outside.

ST- did you say silver lining?

Just to let you know that miracles ARE possible.

You may remember that yesterday the Gas man reported that water was pouring out of my 2nd floor bathroom while #2 son was showering.

I called my favorite handyman-plumber and left him a vm.

This morning he calls and says he’s going by the house. (miracles 1 and 2).

I call my #3 son in the afternoon after I get another vm on the plumber’s phone. He says it’s fixed. He replaced the spout – I guess the knob you pull for the shower was bad (miracles 3 and 4).

He’ll mail the bill, I guess, because he didn’t leave one.

I love living in a village!

  301. Pride. August 13, 2008 7:23 pm

With football teams, it’s not a matter of “will we have any injuries”. Every year, you can always expect injuries. You just don’t know who will be injured. While it is sad whenever you have guys go down who worked so hard during the off-season. Injuries are simply part of the game.

The good teams will overcome these injuries, while the average teams will struggle.

In 1978 when Wilbert Haslip went down, he was a pre-season All-American. In came a lightly recruited, little known freshman by the name of Gary Allen. We all know how that story ended.

In 1976 and 1977, the Washington Huskies had a stud quarterback by the name of Duane Akina. Duane was injured two years in a row and yielded to his back-up, Warren Moon. We know how that story ended also.

In 1958 the Green Bay Packers drafted local boy Joe Francis out of Oregon State in the fifth round. The Packers already had a quarterback that they drafted out of Alabama in the 17th round in 1956. While the two youngsters battled for the number 3 spot behind Babe Parilli and Lamar McHan, Francis yielded the spot to the Alabama QB because of injury. Bart Starr became the starter in 1959 and went on to become a Hall of Fame QB.

Sorry, now I forgot the point that I was trying to make.

    Ahhh. Consider this trivia.

    Here’s to the underdog.
The surprising part of the summer of Brett Favre is how underdogs could emerge as winners of some of the quarterback battles around the league.

Troy Smith, a fifth-rounder from the 2007 draft, could beat out former first-rounder Kyle Boller. Kyle Orton, the former Chicago Bears’ fourth-rounder who doesn’t make many turnovers, could beat out former first-rounder Rex Grossman. While it’s inevitable Atlanta Falcons first-rounder Matt Ryan will start at some point this season, Chris Redman could take the team into the season.

Perhaps the most amazing upset is in San Francisco. J.T. O’Sullivan, a Lions backup signed for the NFL minimum $645,000, has the lead in a quarterback battle against Alex Smith, the first pick in the 2005 draft.

At least Favre cleared up two starting controversies. He took the New York Jets’ starting job and allowed Chad Pennington to move to Miami and claim the Dolphins’ starting job.

    2008 ANALYSIS:

OFFENSE: Not only did June Jones bolt for greener pastures and a larger
paycheck, nearly every major skills player from the offense has also

At least Meyer is not going to have a ton to go on when he game-plans for the Warriors. Pretty much everything is new on the offensive side. It will take a remarkable game for UH to beat the Gators… but bigger upsets have happened.

We knew last year that the offense was going to be productive out of the gate. This year no one is really tested. That is the biggest problem with losing Tyler. He has been productive in the past and has lots of game reps. Inoke has some reps as well, but nothing like what Tyler has. No one is going to know until the first quarter in Florida if the one (of the three) who wins the starting job has the stomach for the atmosphere down there.

It will be really interesting to see what Coach Mack comes up with. The JJ era was all about the offense– you have to figure that defense is going to be more prominent now.

Manti Te’o. That would be something if he chose to stay home. It would be great for the program. Manti has to do what is best for himself and his future– and honestly (and unfortunately) with the options he has staying at home probably isn’t the best choice. The good news is that if he really wants to do architecture or engineering some of the more prominent football schools aren’t particularly good choices either, which makes UH a bit more attractive.

Speaking of Manti, could this be Punahou’s year? It would be nice to get the football monkey off our buffanblu backs… nobody is going to feel the least bit sorry for Punahou athletics, (and nor should they) but c’mon, we haven’t won a football title… I was going to say “in forever” but that might not be accurate.

I am hoping to get to the Boise game. I haven’t driven much in eastern oregon so this might be a good chance for a sightseeing roadtrip…

    Gigi,

Off course the team likes Inoke, everybody likes Inoke, what’s not to like about the guy?

But I sure hope that’s not the criteria to make him the starter. Are you saying they don’t like Greg or Brent? From all sources I’ve seen and heard from, Greg Alexander is highly respected by the team. He worked his behind off since he came here and has come very far. He’s big, strong and mobile.

In any case, as long as they pick the truly best one, I’m just fine with it, whoever it may be. I hope they choose by tomorrow, we need to get the starter ready.

They liked Rolo and Colt first, because they were great QB’s, Colt’s personality cult came much later in his UH career. Rolo wasn’t here long enough to develop a cult, lol.

  348. FloridaTed August 13, 2008 8:44 pm

They snaked to blitz…. again, Calvin Roberts was involved, exploding off the left edge and sacking the QB before he could draw his gun.

Our CBs are deep in talent and tight in pass coverage…. the quickness and speed, at this level, at this quantity, never been seen with this program–ever.

    Totally impressive.

Dowling, Mouton, JP, Roberts, Ryan Perry, Bryant, Black, Silva, Monteilh, Thomas, Porlas and Estes–not to mention the frosh, Ornellas, Septer and Walker.

    Linebackers

Brashton Satele looked good…he was prepared and his size filled up holes. Give him time and experience, he has the genes.

Solomon Elimimian is so fast on the outside. Geez, maybe that’s where he belongs. Expect Sol to make a huge impact from ROLB.

RJ Kiesel-Kauhane broke up a pass over the middle in 11-11s jumping high in the air to swat away a bullet headed for its target. This kid is full of heart.

Paipai jumped into the action and was sprinting aLL OVER THE PLACE WITH A NON-STOP MOTOR.

Tyler Kaventzis was mixing it up too.

Mana Lolotai had bigtime reps–he will represent the warrior just fine.

Dont worry about our D–they are dead-on serious–with less talk and as much walk.

They dont swagger anymore but hurry about with purpose and vigor.
Determined to accept their new roles and out to prove, they can get the job done.

Ted, too bad you can’t watch the L&L show. Anyway, Kanoa feels that Inoke should start at Florida and Alexander can have some PT later in the season.

Apparently, Kanoa sees the 2 QBs as being in a very tight race to be starter. They are both very good, with Alexander having a cannon of an arm. However, Inoke has been around longer and has established such a strong bond with the team that it is hard to ignore such INTANGIBLES.

  352. Garret August 13, 2008 8:49 pm

Time to go through the Miami papers for Warrior news.

Other than Davone Bess, the receivers are still dropping passes, including Ernest Wilford, who was praised by Sparano in the morning, but didn’t live up to it in the afternoon.

  353. ryan August 13, 2008 8:51 pm

Sounds like the Florida coaches aren’t respecting the Warriors. In this article the Florida coaches are basically saying that their next scrimmage will be against Hawaii

“”Tomorrow’s a big day,” said defensive line coach Dan McCarney. “It’s a big evaluation. It’s game speed, game snaps and we’ve gotta find out a lot about these guys because the next time we go scrimmage is probably going to be Hawaii.”

  354. Garret August 13, 2008 8:51 pm

This note from the Sun-Sentinel’s beat writer is not good for Reagan.

The tight ends are more valuable because they can do both jobs. Fasano is a better H-back than Boomer and Reagan.

Sparano says he’s only keeping one FB. It really comes down to roster flexibility.

I say Boomer gets the job because he’s just a little less of a lead blocker than Reagan, catches a lot better, and is a better special teams player.

ROOKIE RECEIVER CONTINUES TO STAND OUT

Undrafted rookie Davone Bess continues to impress with his route-running and pass-catching abilities. During a camp plagued by drops and inconsistency in the passing game, Bess is sure-handed and consistently gets open. Coaches had Bess handle snaps as the No. 3 WR with the first-team offense. CUMULATIVE NOTES FOR THE SATURDAY KARAOKE CALL

    • Parking should not be a problem with the large parking lots.

    • Any carpooling and Designated Driver arrangements are probably already made privately, but it you are looking for a DD, please post request on blog.

    • The large (green) room has a lot of space but ice chest “pooling” recommended. Don’t block the aisles, they are needed for dancing 😉

We may enter the room at around 7:45 PM (theoretically)

Mrs. Bulla and d1shima will be entering songs into the system per my request (as they did at the April 19 KK call). We will have paper slips for writing song requests. Turn in song requests to Mrs. Bulla or d1shima.

    • Mrs. Bulla and the Jager Bombers will set in the front half of room for song input –also the Bomber table. All Tsai-kettes invited to stop by 🙂

Bulla is setting up and tending a Midori Margarita/daquiri bar with assistance from Rob25 and has requested a back corner.

WreckinEyez will have something interesting to set up in the other back corner…

    • Attempts to gather a food list has mostly failed so far, but please, only 1 bunch of watercress (don’t over-feed Bulla). Go ahead and bring your food/pupus…we’ll probably go to 12:45 AM and need the fuud. 🙂

    • At the current RSVP count, it is very likely that we will extend another hour to 12:45 AM (no additional cost). Stretch makes the on-scene call based on the nights finances.

    • Standby for a possible semi-organized singing program at around 10:30 PM. Maybe. Solos, duets, small group, etc. — emceed by WreckinEyez (who MC’d Blog Party 4 and rallied the Tsai-kos to their largest group song at the last KK call) 😕

I didn’t realize that brothers were involved in a MLB game today–one as a player and the other as an umpire.

Randy Wolf hit a foul ball down the third base line and his brother Jim Wolf, the third base umpire, called it foul.

So therefore, baseball does the right thing by letting Jim Wolf umpire when Randy Wolf pitches.

But I believe correctly baseball lets him take the field go to trumpet how impartial their umpires are. If you admit that one might have an allegiance issue in this case, you admit that they’re human beings.

If you’re Major League Baseball, you have hired Jim Wolf as an umpire with the understanding that he would be impartial under all circumstances.

Article about the likelihood of a player being drafted by the NFL based on how many stars he had next to his name when he had a high school recruit.

Roughly 45 percent of the first three rounds were highly ranked recruits coming out of high school. There were also 25 members of the Rivals 100 — the top-100 prospects in any given year — taken in the first three rounds.

On the surface it looks like a prospect is almost more likely to be a first-round pick as a two star (7) than a five star (5). However, a deeper look at these numbers shows just how remarkable recruiting rankings can be:

This means that a player has nearly a 50-50 chance of being drafted in the first three rounds if he is ranked as a five star recruit. The chance drops significantly for four stars. It drops even further for three star prospects, as they have less than a four percent chance. Two star recruits basically have no chance of being drafted in the first round — in fact, its less than one percent.

College football fanatics have recently fallen in love with the “BCS Busters.” Utah, Boise State and Hawaii have all played in recent BCS bowl games. Fans and athletic directors alike have complained about the smaller schools not getting a chance at a National Championship.

Do they deserve a chance? Yes. Will they ever win a National Championship? The talent breakdwn says no.

For the most part, ‘non-big six’ schools finish outside of the top-50 in recruiting rankings. But there are plenty of players drafted from these schools. So why do they get the perceived slight in recruiting rankings? One word: depth.

Since 2000, the Miami Hurricanes lead college football with 62 draft picks. The first non-big six team is BYU. The Cougars’ 20 draft picks rank 39th in the nation. This means that two-thirds of the big six teams are consistently putting more players into the NFL than any one of the smaller schools.

Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson was fined $5,000 for wearing “Ocho Cinco” on the back of his jersey before a game in 2006.

To avoid getting fined, Johnson hasn’t done it since then. But Johnson now has a plan for how he can get away with having “Ocho Cinco” spelled out over the “85″ on his back.

We’ve learned that Johnson has taken the first steps in the state of Florida toward legally changing his last name to Ocho Cinco.

    Seriously.

If Johnson follows through on this, his actual, legal name will be Chad Ocho Cinco, and the NFL would then (we assume) allow him to put his new last name on the back of his jersey.

    In my opinion,

Inoke will start, giving Alexander a chance to learn the offense. Rausch will be a good #3, but will need a lot more time to learn the offense.

Keep in mind that the starting nod in 2005 went to Graunke, with Brennan at #2 and Jack Rolovich at #3.

Right now Inoke looks like the best bet to start. However, Alexander looks like the most likely to light up the 2010 NFL combine.

What am I saying? I don’t know it’s to late to explain, ‘m tired. Too much conditioning drills today.

Meanwhile watch those workouts big guy, we practice once a month on the ceded lands whether we need to or not. When you move in, you’ll see what I mean.

lizk, I really like my Iphone, learning much and when I discover new stuff my ability to use the Iphone gets better. SteveM has helped me lots along with reading and just listening to other Iphone users. like you was not sure if I would be able to ues it properly but its been fun learning.

my first accessories was also to get a cover and car charger. still considering the extended apple care but the store guys said it can be purchased anytime (no rush)

take care, esme now cause its news time whoooooooooooooosh

  400. Pride. August 13, 2008 10:11 pm

    Howzit Kekoa.

  401. Pride. August 13, 2008 10:12 pm

So I bought a bass guitar last week.

  402. Pride. August 13, 2008 10:13 pm

With the bass comes an instruction book on how to play.

  403. Pride. August 13, 2008 10:15 pm

So for a whole week I have practiced religiously, putting in hours a day.

  404. Kekoa August 13, 2008 10:15 pm

Bring ’em to da K-call! We can add extra bass on every song.

  405. J August 13, 2008 10:16 pm

The 2008 Left Hander of the Year is Barack Obama.

Bush 41 is a southpaw, not the other one. McCain is also a lefty.

  406. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER August 13, 2008 10:17 pm

Pride. AWRIGHT! oooh… Da T-gate cabana will be jumpin!

Koakane- thanks for the encouragement! I’m looking forward to using the GPS when I’m traveling!

  407. Pride. August 13, 2008 10:18 pm

So this weekend, I’m going to get my bass playing analyzed by a friend who used to play with K.C. and the Sunshine gang. It’s only going to cost $75.00. He’ll give me an evaluation, and include a video of my performance.

  408. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER August 13, 2008 10:19 pm

J- just the one! I am buying another iPhone and will practice hard on my typing…

  409. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER August 13, 2008 10:20 pm

Pride. Sounds like Mr. gigi getting his swing analyzed….
    no… never mind… no comparison…

  410. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER August 13, 2008 10:22 pm

J- I was always intrigued by left-handed fellas. Musta been the creative attraction. 😆

  411. Kekoa August 13, 2008 10:22 pm

Pride – if you play da bass as well as you do your slack key guitar…goin’ be awesome at all the Tsaiko T-gates.

Hey, what about turning into one strolling band of Tsai-ko’s! We could have a battle of the bands to pump up the crowd and challenge the UH band.

  412. Pride. August 13, 2008 10:22 pm

I think my friend played for K.C. and the Sunshine band not gang.

Anyway, my other friend, Bulla’s classmate has offered to give me bass playing lessons. But at $100.0 a month, it just cost too much.

I think I’ll just stick with the analysis.

Bulla’s classmate is good though. He was a studio musician in L.A. for twenty years.

  413. gigi-hawaii © August 13, 2008 10:23 pm

Although hubby writes with his left hand, he throws and golfs with his right hand. It’s a good thing cause our golf clubs are for right handed golfers.

  414. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER August 13, 2008 10:24 pm

Pride. (just read more posts) you have been playing bass for only 1 week? WOW! Can you play and sing at the same time?

I can’t. That’s one reason why singing has been a hobby and not a job for me.

  415. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER August 13, 2008 10:27 pm

gigi- my #1hubby was the same. Write left, throw right. My #1son is the opposite. Write right, throw left.

    I am always “right”… bwahahaha!

  416. Pride. August 13, 2008 10:28 pm

Liz, I took lesson #1 in the book. They have four more lessons. Maybe by September, I can be a studio musician too. Can’t wait to get my bass playing analysis.

I wonder if I would get any better if I was to take lessons from a real PRO like Bulla’s Classmate, maybe I might end up actually having something to analyze after a year’s worth of lessons.

    Hmmmmm. thingd to think about.

  417. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER August 13, 2008 10:29 pm

That’s the way, uh huh uh huh, I like it… kewl.

Oh- gigi- #1hubby played a right-handed guitar left handed- Cotton picking style – upside down and backwards.

  418. Kekoa August 13, 2008 10:31 pm

Liz ~ Pride played ‘slack’ and had us all in a trance. I think was Ophi moe moe, and all us went sleep! Bet you didn’t know that they same baritone voice that sings “One in a Million” can also sing Falsetto almost as smooth as his grandma *Aunty Genoa.*

  419. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER August 13, 2008 10:31 pm

Pride. Suggestion- take the lessons right away before you develop any bad habits. If you are in a learning mode, get the best teacher you can get asap 😎

  422. gigi-hawaii © August 13, 2008 10:36 pm

haha whenever hubby and I see someone writing with his left hand, we look at each other and nod, “Sign of insanity…”

    We watch Obama closely. j/k

  423. SteveM (iTouch) August 13, 2008 10:39 pm

Posting from my iTouch. Peaches loves it.
It is synched to her iMac for iTunes and iPhoto, not mine. 😐

  424. Kekoa August 13, 2008 10:42 pm

Ok…let’s review. On the Bass Guitar we got:

    1. Kama Krab

    2. Wreck

    3. A-Joe

    4. Kaipo

    5. Pride

So we actually have an entire Tsaiko Eletrical Bass Band!

  428. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER August 13, 2008 10:54 pm

oohhh.. I am inspired now. The guy at ATT showed me a book he was writing on his iPhone. Then he showed me how fast he can type with his thumbs.
He said to spend at least 2 weeks practicing. hmmm.

  429. gigi-hawaii © August 13, 2008 10:54 pm

kekoa, do you type with your 2 thumbs or with a padded stylus?

  430. Kekoa August 13, 2008 10:55 pm

  435. SteveM August 13, 2008 11:06 pm

    Back on my desktop…

Type with thumbs? Impressive. Must have smallish thumbs? In any event, gotta turn the iTouch/iPhone horizontal to get the wider keyboard.

  436. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER August 13, 2008 11:09 pm

yup- very impressive. He was a norma;-sized person. Just developed what looked like a sweet spot on both thumbs. I am going to have to cut my nails and practice.

Sure glad xs-homey is working late… he would have a field day with this thread…

  437. Jason August 13, 2008 11:14 pm

    J-Dog comments :

“Pretty hard to gauge how we’ll do in the swamp simply because of the amount of changes from 07 to 08 squad. If Florida’s mindset is that UH is a cupcake team then so be it. After the UGA game can you blame them?

Not to mention looking at us they see: the guy who was looking to take over for Colt is ineligible, Blaze is out, yadayada.

Here’s to UH sneaking up on UF and at least making the gators a bit nervous by making it a close game, or even pulling off the improbable victory.”

Great insight. This is a very important game for Hawaii. If Hawaii gets blown out by Florida, then the credibility of the Hawaii football program will take a major hit. Many small colleges like Troy and Marshall have come in an played well. Hawaii cannot have another Georgia game.

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

Today is D-Day for the QB’s.

I was actually able to attend the afternoon practice yesterday and noticed while they were running their “2-minute” offense, they had a certain QB who I think is going to be the man. Too bad I can’t make the morning practice today to confirm what I think.

  457. Stretch August 14, 2008 6:56 am

Maybe I should have read ST’s article before posting.

  458. Garret August 14, 2008 7:02 am

    ST,

I think that there was a typo in your article…isn’t the bolded Hisatake below supposed to be Letuli instead?

But in a contact sport, to be sure, little happens smoothly. Letuli, who has played well at left tackle in recent practices, was sidelined with a “tweak” yesterday.

It is not considered to be serious, but he might not be able to practice until tomorrow.

That would be a shame, considering the coaches believe Hisatake’s proverbial “light” — when comprehension and athletic ability mesh — was turned on this past Saturday.

  459. whitey August 14, 2008 7:06 am

Good Morning Tsaikos here and arounjd the world. It looks like the Warriors are on track and following their training script. Today is GD day (not bad word for those of you whose mind is in the muck) and hope to do some damage at Kahili. Going back to lurking and see how the offensive scenerio plays out for the Warriors. GO WARRIORS!!!!

  460. djmitcho August 14, 2008 7:08 am

Good Morning Tsaikos! Hope everyone has a good day.

    expat,
it would be nice to meet you at the BSU game, but as far as sight seeing in eastern oregon, I think you’d be disappointed with the sights.

  461. Bulla August 14, 2008 7:11 am

    haha,

Pride taking bass lessons is awesome. you’re right, my classmate is very talented playing with the likes of Lee Ritenour, Kenny Rankin, Al Jarreau, every local act in town, and many many more. He rocked the House of Blues when he headlined there. I was blessed to have him play at our wedding, man the guy can flat out rip it.

Trivia question of the day, who is a former trumpet player, turned concert cellist, turned stand up bass player in our Tsaiko family, (same individual was a pianist (careful how you say that Homey) for 6 years, and competed at UH’s very own Orvis Auditorium during High School as a cellist?

figure that out and let me know

  462. Bulla August 14, 2008 7:20 am

    al,
you survived the trek to the wild side of maui…..haha, i always tell chad i wanted to enter him in the tv show ‘survivor’, but thought it would bring back to many childhood memories, haha.

what next, halawa valley on moloka’i with the Aluli’s, haha

    call me, hungry already…..

  463. d1島 August 14, 2008 7:27 am

    Great Morning All!

Day II of full pads and Decision Day for QB1. Wish I could be at this morning’s practice; watching 3 QB’s lay everything on the line knowing this is their last chance to impress should be fun.
Homey, don’t disappoint; give us da blow-by-blow!

  464. d1島 August 14, 2008 7:35 am

The Geckos thought that Percy Harvin may have been in the running for the Heisman this year but that seems unlikely now.

We’re just waiting. Waiting for Percy Harvin to finish his first full practice, which might not happen until after the Hawaii game. Waiting to talk with him, which can’t happen until he finishes a practice. Waiting for the explosiveness, the Heisman talk to become a reality. Because if he’s not ready and 60 percent all year, this Heisman hype vaporizes. We all know Percy at, say, 80 percent is still pretty brilliant, but will his Heel of No Steel continue to take enough dents to become unbearable?

  465. d1島 August 14, 2008 7:37 am

    Urban Meyer is guardedly optimistic.

Urban Meyer just talked to the media and said Percy went a little bit today and sounded encouraged. Not full speed yet, of course, but closer. Last week he said he was “concerned” about Percy, so Thursday showed progress. But you’ve got to wonder if there’s something more going on here.

  466. Kelli August 14, 2008 7:39 am

Thank you all for your birthday wishes! I feel so special. 🙂 Looking forward to meeting some of you on Saturday.

WarriorMojo and Kazz: Speaking of UA stuff, I don’t own anything yet. Terrible, yeah? I think I’ll get a new shirt for media relations attire, but I want my own collection, too. I hope they have nice stuff for girls/women. I remember some other brand used to make shirts and stuff that seemed to run VERY small. It looked like they were for little kids.

Agree withe djmitcho. Driving thru Eastern Oregon to Boise is something to “get through”. I think the only interesting thing was finding out how Owyhee, ID got it’s name! 😆

  469. FloridaTed August 14, 2008 8:15 am

    Morning/afternoon, Tsaiko-Nation and Tsai-Meister.

I’m starting to wonder a little if it’s a good thing that all three QB’s are still so close. I was hoping that one of them would have separated himself somewhat. Especially Funaki, with all his experience and the big head start he had, I would have expected him to have secured the job by now, if he’s the one.

On the other hand, I hope it means that we have three first class QB’s in camp. Can’t wait for the results.

  470. expat August 14, 2008 8:20 am
