And away we go

As Ross used to remind Rachel — “We were on a break” — so it goes for the Warriors, who are on hiatus for  spring break.

The players are excused from workouts, early wake-up calls and late-night studying.

Some of the coaches are on the mainland helping their families complete moves to Hawaii or visiting friends.

Norm Chow is in China with his family. Chow said the trip was planned before he was hired as UH’s head coach. He said it will be his first time in China. He will spend most of the trip in Beijing.

* * * * *

The Hawaii Tourism Authority is being credited for its part in today’s road volleyball match being shown on ESPN3. It has something to do with Northridge being part of the Big West, and the Big West having a deal with ESPN.

Now the WAC still has ties with ESPN, and UH’s WAC dues have been paid for the rest of the academic year. Is there a possibility softball road games can be shown on ESPN3? Maybe HTA can help.

    ST,

You think it’s possible that the players will have Chow’s schemes down by the first football game of the season? Offensively that is.

I’m a big fan of the four-wide offense. It’s been proven to work the past 14 years here.

I had some concerns about the pro-set offense, especially with only two primary wide receivers.

And then I saw the pro set in action. There are so many different formations and points of attack, that defenses can’t just sit back in pass coverage. It’s been only three practices, and there has been some sloppiness adjusting to the new schemes, but I think this is going to be an offense that is productive and entertaining.

There are many ways to win football games. That’s the beauty of college football.

Washington State’s new coach, Mike Leach, said what he looks for in a quarterback:

“The most basic is, `Does the guy make good decisions?”‘ Leach said, when asked how he evaluates quarterbacks. “The second is, `Is he accurate?”‘

    “Those two you can’t compromise.”

After that he looks at factors like size, arm strength, quick feet and speed.

I recall watching a report on BY-Who FB back when they were churning out QB’s and at one point they were watching the QB’s throwing in practice and someone was charting every throw. The thrower had to come back to the person with the chart and “explain” each decision and it was recorded on the sheet. I believe Coach Chow was the OC back then.

Was this a Chow thing or an Edwards thing?

I’m sure that is done with video now but any idea if the review process is that detailed?

  13. Ipu Man March 24, 2012 8:16 am

d1shima, that would drive Colt Brennan nuts…

  14. Stephen Tsai March 24, 2012 8:21 am

    d1:

There’s no time to stop the action.

What I like is how mistakes aren’t tolerated because there are fewer opportunities. In some drills, there is only one receiver going out at a time. Dropping a pass is the equivalent of rolling a gutter ball when 12 people are sharing a lane.

  15. Ipu Man March 24, 2012 8:21 am

Didn’t he say to Jones, “I don’t know what I am doing out there!”

And coach said, “That’s ok, just keep doing whatchaya doing…”

  16. Stephen Tsai March 24, 2012 8:25 am

When Chow was at BYU, he used to let the visiting media — “Ferd” and I — attend practice.

I remember when we visited Chow at his BYU office. He asked if we wanted sodas. We said, sure, and he told his quarterback to go get us the sodas from the fridge.

    The QB was Steve Sarkisian.

UTEP’s Camila Carrera has hit four home runs in the last two games for a total of 21 for the season. She has a good chance to beat Kelly Majam’s record of 30. Today, I noticed that she got four walks; that’s one way to prevent her hitting more.

The Wahine lost its third game of the year 4-2 to San Jose State this afternoon. This time Amanda Pridmore limited the Bows to three hits instead of one. The Bows hitting woes continue. One of the three hits was a gift, a bobbled ball that was called a hit rather than an error. Again the Bows continue to strike out a lot. Maybe next game of the double-header the team will finally break out the hits. Hope so.

  57. papajoe2 March 24, 2012 3:54 pm

Did anybody else play on the field besides the starting 8. I don’t mean pinch runners, but field players. Just curious.

A few months ago someone on this blog showed us an article about Rick Pitino in an interview, and how he couldn’t wait to get out of Hawaii. DeMello keeps praising Pitino, the former UH Rainbow head coach. After I read the article, I prefer to just call them Louisville and don’t want to mention the coach. At the time, I wanted him to take over our program here in Hawaii, but after reading the article, good thing he didn’t. He didn’t like Hawaii or being here at all.

  75. jm2375 March 24, 2012 6:27 pm

ppj2 – apparently, UH isn’t mentioned in his resume, either, and he was interim HC.

    Congrats to the Wahine!!

    #76 Papajoe2

You forget that he was connected with the Bruce O’Neil problem. When Bruce was relieved of his position, Pitino was the interim coach. He applied for the head coach position but President Matsuda wanted to clean house.

I assume that is why is he huhu with UH.

  78. Old School Dave March 24, 2012 7:10 pm

Artie Wilson has a Pitino story involving an exchange between the two in the old Klum Gym the year after he finished playing for UH and was preparing for an NBA tryout. It wasn’t a pleasant exchange. Tells you a lot about the guy.

  79. Pomai March 24, 2012 7:13 pm

What other team is 26 an 3……………………….

  80. papajoe2 March 24, 2012 7:22 pm

tom mui and the others. Thanks for the info. Does anybody remember the article that was mentioned here? I always was proud that he was a coach in Hawaii, but after reading the article and his woes here, I could care less if he recognizes Hawaii or not. I’m more proud of what Jaime Dixon accomplished at Pitt and the football coaches that either played here, coached here, or grew up here. Maybe DeMello hasn’t heard of the true story of Pitino and Hawaii. I admit that I don’t know everything about his stay or leaving here but what I do know now makes me feel differentlly from what I believed back then.

  81. tom mui March 24, 2012 8:08 pm

Some have passed on. I’m rather new to the blog, just over a year, but still feel like I made a lot of friends as we share the same love of UH sports.

  86. mo808 March 24, 2012 9:18 pm

@50 ok maybe I lost track today–but my best guess is Kailua Storms 56-6 vs Ewa Beach Cane Spiders today at preseason game played at Aiea HS Football field! “Bully” got a Pick and I got it on film. (iPhone)!

Next game is opening Ist game for HGL on April 1st at UH, i beleive at the Clarence Ching Field. The 1st game begins at 1pm. Storms plays Volcano’s at 4pm.

The defense for the Storms seems to be coached by a veteran player on team! Way to go D!!!

I’m so happy for these guys who enjoy the game and keep playing for the love of the game! The youngest player on the team is nineteen and the oldest is 29! They played as one! I was amazed because a certain player was gray haired and so I thought the player might be over 35 but son said “no Ma younger than me (20)? The price of admission is worth it! Go see and support Hawaii Gridiron FB!

I’m so glad these guys can keep playing! Some played college or semi pro and for the love of the game keep on playing :). Which fills the void until UH Warrior FB hits the field this Fall!

    Cheehoo! Go Warriors!

papajoe2 — rest asssured that many are lurking, and they pop up once in awhile, but it takes a lot to draw them out. They are all veterans who have mostly learning to ignore idiots and jackasses and are not amused by sock puppet mentality clones.

Interestingly, most of the MIA bloggers know each other–or have come out to past activities to meet people in person. They are in the photo archives. When that happens, they are no longer a faceless blog name. That’s how the Tsai-ko’s formed. (See Blog Party 1).

I remember Blog Party2 where I met the legendary Al, Bulla, Da Punchbowl Kid, gigi-hawaii, James, Addahknowjoe, Curt, and truegreen.

I personally disagree that bloggers need to use their real names. Jackasses and trolls are not using their real names anyway. Real names come out when people get together and introduce each other (tailgates, cattle calls, karaoke calls, cruiser calls, and any reason we can agree too) 🙂 Do you think it surprising that I can associate real names with almost every blog name of the people who attended Tsai-ko functions? No great feat since people of good will have little to hide.

Hmmm…haven’t seen Curt here for a while.

Now let me tell you about this “newbie” papajoes2 next…. 😆

To complete my thought on papajoe2 before my meds kick in tonight…

papajoe2 has actually been around the blog for 2.5 years. Really. Yes, time flies as we get older 🙂

Here was a person who said on the blog that he would like to attend the Cattle Call buffet at Fook Yuen in the McCully Shopping Center but cannot. Toward the end, he appears and says he was in town for some business and had to stop by….he was somehow able to spot us and introduce himself. 😆

Then he came to large Karaoke Call and his eyes widened. He later sheepishly admits that he’s been on 8 cruises. BTW, I am finding a stronger and stronger correlation between the more social Tsai-kos and the cruisers. I offer some evidence in support of this: Tom Mui, garret, hawnstln, Mrs. Bulla, myki, and Long Time UH Fan (RIP).

  97. al March 24, 2012 11:24 pm

yup, this spring will separate the men from the boys and contenders from the pretenders. i would imagine there will not be enough room to keep 15 receivers. some will migrate no doubt.

i nearly ordered one of those “too big for your mouth burgers” at chili’s tonight in your honor. but i had to order sensibly so that i could partake in that signature dessert of theirs; the molten lava cake

  102. al March 24, 2012 11:32 pm

i guess i’ll have to fast tomorrow since we took our 88yr old aunt to lunch today. we had the best dry beef chow fun in the state and some dim sum at the mandalay restaurant.

  106. papajoe2 March 25, 2012 4:46 am

Thanks SteveM. Sorry, I went to bed early last night and of course got up too early this morning. Wow, even I didn’t realize that I’ve been on the WB for 2.5 years. Yup, time sure flies. I really thought it was about 1.5 years. The portion about Tom Mui was great. I’m so fortunate to have met Mr. Mui in person and the rest of the bloggers. You are also spot on about my first meeting some of the bloggers too. And the big party with the closing of the Honolulu Advertiser. I thought it was the end of the WB so I had to meet the great people on this blog. I’m looking forward to more great times with the WB family and friends.
