A real highlight video

Between the third and fourth quarters last week, the highlight video of the season was shown on the Aloha Stadium scoreboard — UH players dancing along to the Bruno Mars/Mark Ronson collaboration of “Uptown Funk.”

The video has gone viral, with links on several sites, including the NCAA home page.

Interim head coach Chris Naeole was looking for a way to spice up the crowd entering the fourth quarter.

“You can’t have drudgery every day,” said Naeole, who was seeking a way to show his players’ personalities.

The video was shot in the football locker room. Naeole said it was “open casting.”

There were four cameras and two runs of the song. It took 30 minutes to shoot.

It was unscripted, except for a brief rehearsal on a group choreography. Offensive tackle RJ Hollis, as always, was a natural emcee in his opening speech.

Kevin Luke took about 2 hours to edit and synchronize the video.

“Kevin Luke did a great job,” Naeole said. “It was fun.”

Here it is: Warriors’ Uptown Funk

    onest.

  2. papajoe2 November 19, 2015 10:48 am

Who remembers Tui Ala sinning the ball in the endzone after a touchdown. Once, instead of watching the celebration after the touchdown, I just watched the ball sin. It did for a long time.

  3. H-Man November 19, 2015 10:49 am

That video was really entertaining. I like what coach Naeole is trying to do to motivate the team and to have fun. He’s going to be a great head coach some day, if that’s what he wants.

  4. papajoe2 November 19, 2015 10:49 am

    Auwe, my hijklmno_qrst not working.

    Papajoe:
That’s actually a common problem with a laptop.
    It is a laptop, right?
If it’s a computer, it’s easy to fix.
But it’s more difficult to fix with a laptop because you have to remove layers. Not sure what that means. Only know when the tech was explaining, all his words looked like this: $$$$$$

  6. Bugaz November 19, 2015 11:01 am

That uptown funk video would rock the stadium with a winner Warrior team. Hopefully June Jones keeps it going next season.

  7. kanak November 19, 2015 11:09 am

Love Braddah Iz, but Country Road had to go. A great upbeat song by a Hawaii-born artist, danced to by a Hawaii team… Finally someone in the program getting it. GO BOWS!!!

  8. mytake November 19, 2015 11:09 am

A miserable season and their making a dance video. That just goes to show nobody gives a sh!t

  9. BigFan November 19, 2015 11:16 am

Great video. It’s debatable whether they should be more focused on football but there’s more to life than football so………

  10. Kapahulu November 19, 2015 11:32 am

I saw the Video at the Stadium. I thought it was great. Nice to see the players having fun!

  11. Arcumfortis November 19, 2015 11:37 am

Don’t want to kick it Norm while he is down. But the video represents a different understanding of how to invigorate a group of young men. Norm was just too conservative and it showed on the field every game. Now my wish is that the dynamic enthusiasm displayed on the video could translate into some dynamic excitement on the field. Yes I can’t wait for next year but would like to see it now .

  12. SteveM November 19, 2015 11:40 am

    Good morning everyone!

I saw the video at the stadium too…me around 6 other people left in my section. I thought it refreshing but a little out of place considering the game situation. Maybe it should have been shown between the first and second quarter. But yes, it is cool!

  13. cocobean November 19, 2015 11:58 am

The overall crowd reaction at the stadium was okay given the mood of the crowd at the end of the third Q. It would have been great if the team was playing better and the student section had some students in it. None of the older folks like me knew the song or who sang it. Thanks ST, now I know. At the SJSU game I’ll try to impress the two sisters around my age who sit in front of me by saying hey that’s a Bruno Mars song, Uptown Funk.

  14. Ipu Man November 19, 2015 12:13 pm

Come on Bruno, make yourself a movie
(like Sylvester Stallone) where you are
the quarter back on the hapless UH football
team, but your funk and creativity bring it
    to life…and victory!

  15. A-House November 19, 2015 12:19 pm

Me li kee the Uptown Funk!

Play it before the game, during quarters, half time – heck just play it for it will take a long time before all the “aging crowd” gets with the beat!!!

we need something to grasp in this hour of need and this may just be the spark

if UH Manoa does not have students with expertise in this area, then go to the community colleges for help – they are part of the greater UH campuses!

  16. Ipu Man November 19, 2015 12:22 pm

Also, Mr. Matlin, take a tip from this video and try
funding UH athletics with an internet fund plea…
not just to Hawaii, but to the world. Bet UH lovers
in Timbucktoo would send you a peso or two, but
probably Australia would be a good place as well as
    Japan and China—Korea, too. 🙂

  17. Ipu Man November 19, 2015 12:29 pm

Here are a couple of fundraising sites:

    http://gogetfunding.com/
    and
    https://www.gofundme.com/
(this one has a category for sports teams…)

Plus there might be a professional fund raiser here in Hawaii
who could take you to the world.

    Anyhow, my two cents worth…

  18. Ipu Man November 19, 2015 12:32 pm

Also Kristi Yamaguchi is a philanthropist and founder of the Always Dream Foundation. I don’t know if she will put on a show for you, but maybe
    Bruno and friends would 🙂

  19. Ron November 19, 2015 12:33 pm

I hope Scott Harding is getting residuals for every time he is on TV.

  20. Ipu Man November 19, 2015 12:36 pm

Tho it would be nice to see the new coach take the
team to the ice palace to cool off on one of their hot
    week practices…

  21. Da Punchbowl Kid November 19, 2015 12:44 pm

“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” Yup Nae’ole has it right. Too much drudgery bad for the soul. Warriors look smuud.

Warriors need to work harder, play harder and get that win this week. After that, they should play that video on the jumbo and errybody dance.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  22. mileHIwarrior November 19, 2015 12:47 pm

Wow! I guess thee boys just can’t catch a break and just have fun without the chosen few saying something against it.

  23. z November 19, 2015 12:57 pm

Important for players to have fun. Nice video.

    Go Warriors!

You can. I haven’t given up.

    Get the big W!!!!!

  24. z November 19, 2015 1:01 pm

Cayman was one I had always hoped to see on the field.

  25. mctruck November 19, 2015 1:27 pm

Talk about, Coastal Carolina, HC (Joe Maglia) Who was a successful, CEO at onetime, retired, so he could become a HC oneday in college. Very good article:

    http://www.campusrush.com/joe-maglia-coastal-carolina-1464364869.html

The article claims there will be at least (15) HC openings just within the Big Five conferences.

  26. justsomeguy November 19, 2015 1:29 pm

Love seeing stuff like this. Part of being on a team is goofing off together. Glad to see the guys in good spirits. Goodness knows, they need it.

  27. poidog November 19, 2015 1:39 pm

I agree with #26. I’m glad that the players can still find some fun and enjoyment somewhere within this dreadful season. It probably doesn’t help to just sit and sulk in the corner all day, even though that’s what a lot of armchair qb’s expect them to do.

  28. Maddog50 November 19, 2015 1:45 pm

Handling adversity is part of life. People don’t like the video people don’t like the record-all I can say is respond-Me I just want a win-

  29. hitmanhart November 19, 2015 1:51 pm

    mctruck:
    Thanks for the great article.
If they don’t choose JJ for Head Coach, I hope they go after this guy.

  34. BigFan November 19, 2015 4:19 pm

So, who’s got the best moves? Was it #19 Jalen Rogers?

  35. ai-eee-soos November 19, 2015 4:21 pm

Matlin presents 5-year budget plan for Hawaii athletics – SA News

    Last two paragraphs are interesting.

Matlin said UH faces $5.2 million more in expenses than its conference competitors due to travel costs, travel subsidies, scholarship costs and other areas. If not for that $5.2 million, Matlin said, UH would have operated at a $3.1 million net surplus in 2014.

Matlin claimed UH athletics is worth $7 million in State tax collection impact in addition to the value it brings to the state in media exposure, exceeding the $4.2 million deficit.

  36. Rodney November 19, 2015 4:26 pm

I ll take Iz any day. It’s like ” Sweet Caroline”

    It’s Hawaii!!! Geezz!

We need to start the recruiting
up again!!!!!! Hire the guy already!
    Stop fooling around!!! Gezzzzz!!

aloha rodney !! !! you must be sitting in the front row know ??
rodney what made you change your mind about jj ?
the other you was running him out of town !! lol

  39. hitmanhart November 19, 2015 8:19 pm

    sorry other week

  40. Rodney November 19, 2015 8:23 pm

    JJ makes cents$$$$$

  41. cocobean November 19, 2015 8:51 pm

I’m not advocating anyone but there’s some things JJ and Miano have over the other applicants – they live here, they can get off to a quick start in rebuilding. Throw in they are currently not tied down by any obligations they might feel they owe to the school that currently employ them….i.e. how Chow felt obligated to Utah. Not being employed as coaches they can be focus on their blue print right now – What type of O and D they feel would work here and who they want to hire to best implement their plan.

In my opinion this is the edge they over the field. Not saying they are best choices just saying they’ll have a head start.

  42. hitmanhart November 19, 2015 9:12 pm

Rodney you are 100 % right my friend on that one !!

  43. MattyBoy November 19, 2015 9:42 pm

Wow no news yet on top applications for the HC position yet? Quiet is usually not good. Hopefully Matlin will select a coach that will bring excitement back to UH football.

  44. cocobean November 19, 2015 10:22 pm

MB. Gotta have patience on this one. Matlin said he he’ll probably set the closing date for applications around the end of the of national football season. For now he and the committee are probably doing their due diligence on the applications they’ve received so far. He said he wants to keep the applicants confidential to protect the privacy of those still employed. It wouldn’t look good for someone like Rolo or Babers if word got out they’re looking for a new job while their teams are still playing.

  45. cappie the dog November 19, 2015 10:47 pm

Nobody seems to remember Poi Dog Pondering.

When they were signed to Columbia, great things were expected out of them.

In Rolling Stone magazine, their debut self-titled album was paired with the first Lenny Kravitz album “Let Love Rule”.

    The theme was contemporary hippies.

The highlight of their career was an appearance on Late Night w/David Letterman.

    They performed “Everybody’s Trying”.

I guess the lesson learned for future aspiring bands is that having a tin whistle player is the kiss of death.

  46. SteveM November 19, 2015 11:16 pm

I stopped at a McDonald’s this afternoon and noticed the big chart of $500 donations McDonald is making for every UH touchdown per game. After 11 games, the season total is $7,500. I haven’t counted UH touchdowns this year, but that comes out to 15 touchdowns in 11 games. I hope we can make McDonalds contribute a lot more in the last two games.

  47. Moocher November 20, 2015 12:58 am

Sad to say, with a win this weekend and a Wyoming loss, the best Hawaii can do is to be tied for last place in the entire mountain west. With a loss, Hawaii will finish with sole possession of last place in the entire mountain west.

how did we get this bad?

  48. Maddog50 November 20, 2015 3:52 am

There will not be a public airing of the candidates unless they reveal it themselves. I can only assume most are employed and for the sake of keeping the playing field level they will only make it public after the season and then maybe not even then. It will happen in due time. Regarding the Budget Matlin detailed, I for sure am going to respond to Matlin’s mailing requesting donations-I normally wait till the first quarter which I will do for my annual gift to Na Koa, but a little sumptin-sumptin can only help the cause. I would like a win please! Go Warriors!!!!

  49. cappie the dog November 20, 2015 4:01 am

    I am an alumnus.

    2003.

If I give money to UH, can I request where in the athletic department I wish to help.

And how much gets me on Matlin’s mailing list.

  50. cappie the dog November 20, 2015 4:16 am

Golden State has got me watching regular season basketball.

I am no longer one of those people who say they only watch the playoffs.

I am waiting for people to put Stephen Curry in the conversation with LeBron and Jordan as the greatest-of-all-time.

I used to call Garrett Nevels a poor man’s Stephen.

I owe Curry a telepathic apology.

I do think Nevels would have made a great grad assistant, but it is very nice to see Zane Johnson on the bench.

  51. mctruck November 20, 2015 6:44 am

#30-Aku; #33-Kapahulu, Glad you folks enjoyed that article. I’m with you on rehiring June Jones. Actually the coach in that article reminded me of JJ, who came into a situation to turn the program around. JJ left coaching at the highest level and turned a struggling UH program around his 1st year. Does that ring a bell?
I believe June Jones still has what it takes to turn this UH program around. That’s why he left the NFL; just like Joe Maglia left at the pinnacle of his profession as CEO. Both these men still have that burning desire to succeed just as Warren Buffet described, Maglia and why he admired Maglia at his age for being successful in coaching Football.

  52. Maddog50 November 20, 2015 7:09 am

Anyone wishing to donate to any athletic branch simply has to go to the UH home page there is a field or banner that says donate-I give thru Na Koa thru that NaKoa.org and have given to coaches choice which is also on the home page and that has specific sports and departments such as Training room weight room and most of the sports. Would love to see more support from the football alums hopefully that will come with the new regime-

  53. Ipu Man November 20, 2015 7:31 am

Maddog, anyone wishing to give to UH is not the point.
That is like saying to the fish, come to my hook and I will catch you.
You’ve got to go find the fish, world wide. You hafta throw out your
net far and wide. You need to bait your hook with goodies.
You can’t just sit under a tree and hope the fish come to you;.
    🙂

Oh, sorry maddog, I see you were replying to Cappie
on how to donate. Good answer. My bad.

  56. Kryon November 20, 2015 7:42 am

From the minority. Say No to JJ. If he is so great, like alot of stuck in the past Hawaii fans think he is, why did ari St go crazy to not go thru with him? Can anyone tell me if Miami fl is calling for him? Or any of the 15 other schools that r looking for a HC? I’d rather have a new car then a used one. So lets c wat someone else can bring. It’s not offensive style that will make us anymore. All versions of R&S is being done nowadays. Defenses are all accustomed to defend it now. There is no edge. The HC that is going to get us competitive again is not an X&O only guy anymore. It’s going to b a HC that is 100% a committed recruiter n motivator. We need a younger coach to go get it. Not a 60 yr old guy who is looking for his last hoorah.

  57. Buffoman November 20, 2015 7:57 am

#56, I too have asked that question regarding his availability and if there were suitors from other places asking for his services. To date, it seems that only folks here are in hot pursuit of him.

Like you, I am more interested in a completely new face as HC, with tremendous organizational and delegating skills. Leadership that relentlessly seeks quality student athletes to fill it’s roster. One who can build an equally motivated staff of teaching coaches that complement the vision of the HC.

  58. tempmanoa November 20, 2015 8:32 am

If not JJ, Rolo, or Miano, or if there is someone better than them out there, then I would go with someone with a good record as a coordinator or head coach and preferably, a record as a head coach. That is why JJ is so hard to pass up– he has done it here in one of the hardest places in the country to coach (and we are seeing mention of this in the media). There have been two or three article out there on three or four coaches who returned to coaching after taking time off from coaching– Urban Meyer and Bob Davie and another coach whose name escapes me– and they have done very well- New Mexico is bowl eligible under Bob Davie and could play for the MW championship after beating tow of the toughest teams in the MWC– Boise at Boise and Utah State. And and we all know Urban Meyer one of the few coaches besides JJ to coach a non-BCS team into a BCS bowl.

  59. shadow November 20, 2015 8:53 am

If not seen already, from SB Nation (11/6/15):

Former Fresno State head coach Pat Hill “is rooting for Hawaii to bring back former head coach June Jones and feels that the former Warriors head coach knows what it takes to win on the islands and can build the program back up.”

  60. BigWave96744 November 20, 2015 9:07 am

JJ as HC, Pat Hill as DC
    Now that would be interesting

  61. NorthShoreFan November 20, 2015 9:26 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…bootiful day.
Kind of wet but cooling rains.

    BigWave96744….. just flashed a mental pic….JJ & PH sitting unda da koa tree…having a screw driver…talking football…

Anyhoo, two fantastic games at the Aloha tonight….should be on ESPN I tell you…

    IMUA WARRIORS!

  62. z November 20, 2015 10:24 am

Pat Hill not a DC. He would be a really good oline coach or special teams coordinator.

  63. Maddo50 November 20, 2015 10:47 am

Ipu Man- Fishing bait nets shade trees goodies? I was just trying to help out a guy. Thanks for the acknowledging that. Several references have been made reggarding the age of a certain candidate for HC. There are an awful lot of Head Coaches 50 plus in colleges and certainly pros-nothing at all to do with Anything-can you recruit raise money and engage the community-asst also play a major role. Most top programs have a lead tireless recruiter. So I just want somebody to restore us so I can fish under a shade tree for some goodies!!!
