And they're off . . .

Following today’s light practice and meetings this afternoon, the Warriors are off until Monday morning’s practice.

Head coach Greg McMackin said the Warriors did a lot of work during preseason training, and the off weekend will allow them to rest their legs before the practices leading to the Sept. 3 opener.

For the Warriors, today was  “game-plan Tuesday,” when the Warriors watch videos pertaining to the strategies they expect to use against Colorado. And, yes, such a day usually is reserved for the Tuesday before a game. But with the extra time, the coaches moved up the preparation time.

(reloading from the last post den)

    Great Morning All!

New season, new mechanics for Dunnachie…BOOM!

Nice read on Falemalu. Hoping for lots of “productivity” from his position.

Nice report from PowderPuff on the Pigout last night. Hope the haul was bountiful!

‘Morning all! Can’t wait but at least it’s single digit days now… Go Warriors! Broil da Bison!

  10. CoolEthan August 26, 2011 6:26 am

Going against the buffs new, 3- 4 defense.

Some Big boys on that line with speed. Reminds me of what Glanville did here.

Juda Parker made the travel squad and will rotate into that mix.

    Take em down.

  13. d1shima August 26, 2011 6:32 am

    iwwthm,

Great find D1. Hey, according to that Mouse-Go video (the first one) you can run the RnS from under center. I wouldn’t mind Rolo mixing it up with some of that.

Well, it helps to have Jim Kelly taking the snaps!

Seriously though that site is a good one to check in with thruout the season. He usually breaks down the highlight stuff from the past week usually with actual game film.

  23. Garret August 26, 2011 7:42 am

    WassupDoc,

I am glad that it wasn’t a heart attack or the Big C. I hope that you are feeling well and that whatever happened is behind you.

By the way, the setback that I mentioned in the blog last week had nothing to do with the stuff that I had been working on with you. I am sorry that I couldn’t clarify that earlier when you asked.

  24. Garret August 26, 2011 7:44 am

Mouse ran the RnS with the QB under center as recently as his stint at Portland State when he and Glanville were there a few years ago. Mouse eventually moved his QB back into the shotgun position because that worked better for the offense he was running at Portland State.

We’ve seen it demonstrated by both Rolo and JJ that UH’s offense can be effective with the QB under center in short-yardage situations, especially near the goal line. I would anticipate that UH will use Moniz under center in those situations at least.

  25. Garret August 26, 2011 7:51 am

I saw several people wonder where I went, so here is a quick explanation…I didn’t read the blog for 4-5 days after my previous post because of a variety of factors. One big reason is that we went to Vegas, and another reason was the 3+ hour delay we had during the drive back made us arrive home after 1am and wiped out my family for a few days. Several Tsaikos saw my wife post about the delay on Facebook, and I explained via e-mail to a person here, so my traveling was not a secret.

Since I have a policy to not post until I’ve caught up with the blogs, it took my awhile to catch up. I was shocked to read some of the assumptions/accusations about me, but I am going to limit my response to the next few posts.

  26. Garret August 26, 2011 7:55 am

I can tell you exactly why you’re frustrated; you tackling all of this alone. You think you can do this all on your own.

I mentioned that I’m working with 4 different *groups* of people. How am I tackling all of this alone? WassupDoc is leading one effort, 1 occasional poster is leading another, 1 lurker is leading a third, and the last UH-related project is not sports related at all and I don’t think that those people have ever read this blog.

  27. Garret August 26, 2011 7:58 am

But here’s the thing, Garrett- you gotta be willing to humble yourself. Open up and learn new concepts and ideas that will not compute on paper. Toss out all the engineering garbage clouding your literary thoughts and learn to approach with your heart and gut instincts.

You honestly think that I am not being humble about these efforts? Then you don’t know me at all I guess.

You honestly think that I am not looking for new concepts and ideas? The reason why I’m working with different people is BECAUSE they have different ideas and concepts.

You honestly think that these things are being approached as “engineering garbage”? Then you have no idea what I’m doing, but you just want to call me out with incorrect ASSUMPTIONS.

At least Al think that your insticts are correct for your assumptions about me.

ST thinks that you are correct, so you can feel good about that.

  28. Garret August 26, 2011 7:58 am

Oops, this part was what I was responding to:

But here’s the thing, Garrett- you gotta be willing to humble yourself. Open up and learn new concepts and ideas that will not compute on paper. Toss out all the engineering garbage clouding your literary thoughts and learn to approach with your heart and gut instincts.

  29. mikey August 26, 2011 8:00 am

    Welcome back Garret

It’s nice to hear from you and just in time starting with Wahine weekend.

We hope you hit a big one. Reason for delay. “Big grin”

  30. Bwhaha August 26, 2011 8:00 am

skip blah blah blah skip blah blah blah

  31. Garret August 26, 2011 8:01 am

It pains me to say this bull but, if you’re failing to deliver on “fail proof” brilliant ideas, don’t blame bureaucracy- it’s all in your delivery.

Brah, I know already, if you’re talking to admin the way you blog here you’re killing them with mountains of statistical nonsense and apocalyptic end of days predictions!

You have no idea what things I have been doing but you ASSUME that I’m killing them with statistical “nonsense”? The latest development had NOTHING related to statistics or end of days predictions. So, you just assume the worst about me and that is fine.

  32. Garret August 26, 2011 8:02 am

No need prove to me that 1+1=2 cuz I already know that…sell me the idea that 1+1=something much more than the sum of its parts.

Another assumption of what I’ve been doing that has nothing to do with reality. The latest bad news had NOTHING to do with revenue inequality or anything like that.

  33. madeinhawaii August 26, 2011 8:03 am

    Morning…

  34. Garret August 26, 2011 8:05 am

I am glad that the MWC isn’t interested in combining with C-USA. A 22-team conference would just be unweildy and soon schools would want to break away from it and that could be bad for UH. Plus, UH pays more in travel subsidies depending on the time zone, so C-USA East teams would be costly for UH and draw less than MWC schools.

Thompson, who is friends with Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky. said members of that league previously have indicated a willingness to combine with the Mountain West.

“I still believe it’s alive and well in their league to say, ‘Let’s try our chance on a critical mass, on a 22-team league team of some sort,’” Thompson said. “Our presidents have not bought into that. There have been casual conversations, not a lot of detail or thought.”

    http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2011/aug/24/will-big-12-poach-mountain-west/

  35. Garret August 26, 2011 8:07 am

The MWC’s commissioner specifically mentioned San Diego State as well as New Mexico as possible targets for the Big 12, in addition to Air Force that has already been mentioned by others.

“We’re keeping our finger on the pulse definitely,” Thompson said during a recent visit to San Diego. “The more likely scenario if A&M were to leave, the Big 12 would look for a 10th member. Would that then affect the Mountain West? Are they going to invite San Diego State, New Mexico or Air Force, somebody from our league?”

  36. Shoko August 26, 2011 8:19 am

Big 12 interested in taking New Mexico? I would think that CUSA schools like Houston, SMU, Tulsa would more sense geographically.

  37. Shoko August 26, 2011 8:21 am

Oh, by the way…welcome back, Garret. Thought you did a Gigi on us and leave the blog for good. 😉

  38. Old Diver August 26, 2011 8:41 am

Gib Arnold is on w/ Artie Wilson. Heard that he said Bobby Miles has improved a lot. Miles and Stokes played together with two PGs and Arnold said he liked it. Yesterday afternoon on the Sports Animals, Arnold said they are all full with scholarships for this year. So, let’s count the players.

    1. Zane Johnson, SG (the only Senior on the team)

    2. Vander Joaquim, C

    3. Joston Thomas, PF

    4. Trevor Wiseman, SF

    5. Bobby Miles, PG

    6. Davis Rozitis, C, PF

    7. Shaquille Stokes, PG

    8. Garret Jefferson, SG

    9. Christian Standhardinger, PF (transfer, redshirting this year)

    10. Hauns Brereton, SF

    11. Brandon Jawato, PG (I am assuming he got a scholarship since Blakes is not here)

    Walk-Ons

    12. Pii Minns, SG

    13. Tyler Brown, PF

    14. Jace Tavita, PG, SG

    15. Kainoa Chu, SG

    16. Tyler McDaniels, PF (no sure if he’s officially on the team)

    17. Miah Ostrowski, PG (football scholarship)

    60!

  61. A-House August 26, 2011 9:59 am

    Japan Bowl:

Maybe Jim D can schedule Fresno or San Diego St to play against in Japan in 2014.

What is the cost for round trip to Japan via the “Artic” route? will the $150K cover the cost? Will the MWC approve?

  63. warriorsun August 26, 2011 10:02 am

well, it’s a no brainer that hawaii’s starters were made public one day prior to “game day tuesday”. but according to boulder ‘spooks’, the buffs are deep into “game day tuesday”. guess the jump-start by embree & staff might be to make -up travel lag time? or they may just be eager beavers rather than an aimless herd of american bison.

one thing certain, jon embree is a tireless worker and a relentless martinet…..and his team is motivated by warrior fans who predict hawaii will put more than 70 on the board.

  64. A-House August 26, 2011 10:03 am

Although its a “bad deal” for the injured Warriors, it gives the others a tremendous oppurtunity to get a lot of practice and/or playing time – definitely a plus for 2012 and beyond.

  65. Kamaaina94547 August 26, 2011 10:05 am

  66. A-House August 26, 2011 10:06 am

Why, cause i never win!! only contribute to the building of mega resort w/ casino.

Roger that! Hope JMxxxx will find something good, and quick! Best wishes!

  71. warriorsun August 26, 2011 10:24 am

how does one presume manti is no longer with his faith bc he decided to forego his mission?

the article i read said that manti attends a mormon church in the southbend area. it also said, he discusses his decisions with his deeply religious family. he sounds rooted in his mormon faith. the bigger issue is whether he will forego his senior year and jump into the early nfl draft. this athlete is a thinker and a good decision maker. his choice to turn down usc was classic stuff. as it turns out, the trojans remains on probation and ND changed coaches and are on the rise with manti as their marque player in only his 3rd year of realtime college play. this kid can see the forest and the trees at the same time. he is made of solid stuff.

Curt and SteveM – thank you for setting up the Oktoberfest event. Planning a get-together is hard work and much appreciated. If Stretch and I are done with our shindig next door, we’ll mosey on over and join you. You know we’re always up for good food and good brew.

Re Pigskin Pigout: yes, I do try to push some of the bidding during the live auction. Have to…it’s for our Warriors!!!!

Thanks PowderPuff, but I am only helping Curt spread the word– he is doing all the organizing, receiving RSVPs, and making reservations.

Anyone interested in reservations and our own table area should contact Curt in email or in Facebook. Here’s a KGMB-9 news report I found on the 2009 Hale Koa Oktoberfest that will give a “look and feel” of the annual event…

  73. Derek August 26, 2011 10:33 am

On the other side, the Buffaloes prognosticators has predicted that they will beat Hawaii by

“a couple of touchdowns” and they have been saying this for at least a few weeks ago. Obviously, each team’s fans are favoring their own teams and this is very normal. For Colorado they are confident because they beat us 31-13 in Boulder last year and they are the big bad Pac 12 conference. Yes, they just might be better than us because the last time we beat a Pac 12 team was Wazzu in Seattle at Quest Field. But, you have to remember that Wazzu was the worst team in the conference and they are probably the worst team in the conference this year too. For Hawaii, it is a revenage game and if you look at last year Hawaii dominated the first have. It should have been at least 24-0 instead of 10-0 at the half. Mack and Company remember it very well. Looking at the teams, I think is a little weaker this year and Hawaii is a little stronger. Colorado’s weakness is their secondary and Hawaii’s strength is our passing attack. Colorodo’s stregth is their running game, but Hawaii’s front 7 is the strength on defense. Hawaii’s weakness is the offensive line, and Colorado’s defensive front is questionable that this point. We have home field advantage and it’s not at altitude. We are used to the humidity, Colorado’s humdity is very low. What will happen? I don’t know.

What I think will happen, well, as it stands now it is safe to say that the weather will be fine at game time and it will be hot and humit. Hawaii to me has the advantage. I believe our Heisman candidate will have a field day and our defense will cause all kinds of havoc. By the middle of the 3rd quarter, Colorado offensive and defensive line will be dragging and the floodgates will open. What was a pretty close game at the half will turn into a runaway. I could be wrong. Hawaii could blow out Colorado in the first half and coast in the second half. I doubt Colorado can beat Hawaii by more than 2 scores. They could if we make a lot of untimely turnovers and as you know, things happen in a football game. That’s why they play the games. But, I like Hawaii chances a lot in this game and I don’t think it going to be very close. I already made my pick.

    derek,

    thanx for sharing.

you make a big thing about the humidity, but boulder aint freezing in the summer.

also, anyone that trains a mile up is ahead when descending to sea level. the american bison wont wilt and if they run the quick snap, the warriors will be challenged to suck their own hawaiian air.

btw, where were you last year on counting the altitude deficits and camping for the major pregame duration in summerlin? venue conditions should be played on both sides of the pond.

im a firm believer that football battles are won in the trenches.

our oline has not shown up yet and based on spring and camp practices–we will need more than tea leaves and well wishes from ardent fans. on the other hand, the buffs strength is in their o-line and the their stealth smurfbacks that slice into massive human walls like a knife cuts through butter.

    so where are we?

back to our warrior Defense. experienced, reinforced and deep.

your 45-10 prediction is still under the spread but your 45 points is more bravado than product.

again, the under looms a sloid bet.

but until our 5th year apprentices and underclass that comprise our OL, show and tell, it will be a dog fight.

for our O–more questions remain than are answered….we shall see and kudos to you for being optimistic.

for our D, it’s a matter of execution, focus and assignment discipline. they are certified to go.

  75. Couch potato August 26, 2011 11:04 am

here i thought being a Mormon and going on a mission was a rite of passage. nevertheless, Teo did consult and he is playing and doing very well.

    almost game time.

    GO WAHINE!

    GO WARRIORS!

  76. bigislandkurt August 26, 2011 11:06 am

CU could be in for a rude awakening at Aloha Stadium. Our boys certainly play with some added punch when they are at the homefield. However, our boys have also been known to stink up the joint when playing a big name opponent on national tv. If CU catches us on one of those days, it’s going to be a long day for the warriors.

A slow start for the Warriors is unacceptable. We will need to be crispy and concise from start ’till end. And most of all, we will have to win the turnover battle. Receivers will need to CATCH and HOLD ON to the ball. No dropsies. No fumbles. Same for our RB’s. For the QB’s, Mo will need to be on point. No INT’s, no momentum-busting mistakes. These are the things that usually happen in a first game situation. Our boys will need to play like they been here before.

    BIK

    BIK

  77. Couch potato August 26, 2011 11:08 am

team captains and vocal leaders need to step up big time.

    GO WARRIORS!

  78. warriorsun August 26, 2011 11:14 am

    “right of passage”? hmmmm….

look, it’s like the navy. some want to volunteer for the seals to become something special.

an elevated stautus. but, if you arent a seal, you can still serve your country in the same navy.

i dont get the presumption that going on a mission and being a mormon are mutually exclusive events.

  79. Couch potato August 26, 2011 11:21 am

not a presumption on my part but is mentioned by LDS brothers.

  80. Couch potato August 26, 2011 11:29 am

yes, i do have brothers and relatives that have gone on missions and they did mention it is a rite of passage. i don’t think they were being presumptuous. not for me to judge.

  81. haka August 26, 2011 11:32 am

Hau’oli La Hanau, Yuval! שיהיה לך יום נהדר!

Good to see you pau busy for a moment, braddah Garret! SOLID!!

#64: A-House- you bring up a good point. All too often during the season teams get entrenched in the moment and forgo the thought of preparing for the future; allowing underclassmen garner much needed experience. Rather than waiting for a blown out scenario to arise that allows the second and third string units to play, perhaps a system built in that encourages player rotation at any moment and overall cohesive team chemistry over individual statistics and playing time.

Derek- I like your outlook of the game ahead.

JMxxxx- Bread Pudding Stand!! Let’s Roll!!

#69: Wes’side Warrior: Bringing down a full grown Buffalo with reckless abandon and a simple ball point pen! AWESOME VISUAL!!!! DPK, somehow you just know how fo bring out the best in us all.

BIK- What’s the latest ETA on your new “recruit?” Can I safely presume your training facilities are up and ready for his arrival?

  84. warriorsun August 26, 2011 11:44 am

just saying, i know many mormons that didnt go on a mission. i also know of mormons that went on controversial missions.

like mitt romney did in 1966 as he matriculated to france for 30 months to get a vietnam related draft deferment. he also received academic deferments before and after his mormon mission assignment as “minister of religion”. now, he wants to be commander-in-chief.

  85. Haleakala August 26, 2011 11:49 am

Hiya Ajoe! Just mentioning again, that I have a few extra UNLV game tickets available that are situated in our Tsaiko block that Rich bought for us.

    Go Warrior! Bust the Buffaloes!

  90. Stephen Tsai August 26, 2011 12:03 pm

OK, Warriors are off until Monday.

  91. haroldwah August 26, 2011 12:04 pm

This is what I found out on when they should go on a Mormon Mission:

Who Goes on an LDS Mission?:

It is a duty for young men, ages 19-27 who are able, to serve as full-time missionaries. Single women, ages 21+, and older married couples also have the opportunity to serve a part or full-time LDS mission.

  92. d1shima August 26, 2011 12:04 pm

    Have a great weekend Warriors!

…and a greater one next week!!!

  93. warriorsun August 26, 2011 12:07 pm

    eh, couch

u humble me (tee leaves). but humit (humid) still is the funniest typo of the day, and derek is a good writer.

btw, my first couz (a mormon) is m to a teo.

  94. d1shima August 26, 2011 12:08 pm

Was everyone practicing per the Depth Chart this morning?

  95. tommui August 26, 2011 12:14 pm

Michelle Wie did OK today two boogies with five birds. She now is -8, four behind the leader

  96. warriorsun August 26, 2011 12:16 pm

key word is “are able”. and no mention of sanctions for otherwise. the church leaves the door open, manti can serve missions in the future under, the “older married couples” category. if he plays in the nfl, he will be old and wealthy by the time he is 35. dont forget the tidings, mormons give 10%. lol.

  97. jm2375 August 26, 2011 12:18 pm

    One more week…

    IS IT SATURDAY YET?

    BTW, where’s the t-gate at?

(Gramps – gotta get your priorities straight – bp or greenies?)

  98. tommui August 26, 2011 12:18 pm

According to the LDS Missions Network (you can access it on Google):

“Young men and women in The Church of Jesus Christ are not required to serve a mission, although many do.”

  99. Couch potato August 26, 2011 12:19 pm

  101. ai-eee-soos August 26, 2011 12:24 pm

Warriors – rest up over the weekend; be ready to work hard on Monday morning.

  102. Couch potato August 26, 2011 12:26 pm

  104. warriorsun August 26, 2011 12:30 pm

    Wow!

One Em Mgmt Dir in NJ put it out there plainly when asked what his message is to anyone who decides to ride out Irene.

“Take a 3 x 5 card and an indelible ink pen. Write your name, SSN, Next of kin and their ph# on the card. Place the card in your left shoe and don’t wear flip flops or loafers; wear tie-on shoes so we can identify you later.”

since you put yourself out to be the expert, will Teo go on his mission? Is the mission not a part of his church’s expectation?

    AJoe!

We are on code-alert ORANGE in terms of the new recruit. Mama is doing good and big sister is taking the impending arrival of her baby brother in stride. We are officially in “any day now” status. I just hope we don’t go into labor on Saturday afternoon right before the CU kick off!!! Yikes! haaaa. Maybe it will be a sign. Facilities are all good and we are as ready as we can be. Much love to you brother.

  137. Slugger August 26, 2011 4:56 pm

If you don’t have the Oceanic HD package, you can get tonight’s game on channel 12. They hadn’t updated the TV guide on channel 24 as of 1/2 hr. ago. They will be broadcasting the home football games on a delay, the day after.

The customer rep. I spoke to said they’d be broadcasting some of the old WVB games this coming week. They’ll cover the WVB tournament this weekend and next weekend.

It was good to see Alex Green in the Packers game.

    K, gotta go…

    RE: Japan Bowl

In MHO I feel Air Force would be the ideal MWC opponent for UH. They’re a natural draw. There’s thousands of military personnel and dependents stationed there. Plus all the US government personnel and their dependents living on the bases.

UCLA would be the biggest draw for the Japanese. It’s been stated before that the UCLA

  156. cocobean August 26, 2011 6:29 pm

    SORRY HIT ENTER BEFORE FINISHING.

It’s been stated before that the UCLA brand is by far the best selling of any university logo merchandise in Japan. They have the best name recognition among Japanese sports fans.

Los Angeles is probably the largest gateway from the Mainland to Japan.

  157. clowns nose August 26, 2011 6:38 pm

Light practice today, no practice Saturday, no practice Sunday, eight days outside of the season opener. Hmm. Hope it doesn’t come back and haunt the Warriors, like it did during the Hawaii Bowl, where the team played sloppily because of a lack of practicing and preparation.

The Colorado team’s been shooting live ammo. Two weeks ago they had a 146 play live scrimmage and then this last week they had a 105 play live scrimmage. That’s impressive on the Colorado team’s part.

The Hawaii team is going about preserving themselves (hence the three day vacation)–coaches words saving our legs…and picking up right where they left off in preparation for the Hawaii Bowl (limited number of practices and no sense of urgency in getting ready for Tulsa). I

But, hey, everyone has confidence in Coach Mack’s winning formula. We shall see.

But I think having the players idle does

I like this line from the last blog post I cited.

he suffers to some extent from good young offensive coordinator disease, which is a specific strain of a larger disease that affects large portions of the NFL: his offense often suffers from needless complexity.

  165. Pride. August 26, 2011 7:14 pm

#151 – Campbell’s head coach Amosa Amosa and O-Line coach Ulima Afoa coached together under Dan Morrison at Punahou many years ago. Two very knowledgable and experienced coaches. That’s a big plus for Campbell.

  166. Pride. August 26, 2011 7:19 pm

#164 – I like that one D1. They do that at all levels. I just heard a coach this week berating an eight year old free safety at the pop warner level to shade the the inside slot to the strength of the formation, and not play head up. You’ve got to be kidding me. At that age I was only interested in having the most “bumbucha” marbles. Would have never known what the hell a slot was much less an inside slot. The only thing I knew about strength was that I didn’t have any.

this is a quick wahine team. i cant recall a shoji team like this. it opens up their offense to attack from all sides, the middle and behind the 3-meter line. also passing game looks good as well as our D. maeda is like a shortstop that eats up everything that comes her way.

croson is the real deal in all phases of the game. promising outlook.

Thanks for all the good thoughts and prayers!

Having a wonderful reunion with my favorite aunt who used to live in Enchanted Lakes and who now lives in Miami with fabulous daughter and hubby. All thanks to Irene. Weather here has been sunny and hot. Got to have an awesome Cali. Pizza Kitchen lunch with PDX nephews who are and were CPK GM’s so we let them order and had a Tsai-ko sized feast. Highlight of the trip so far has been visiting my cousin’s daughter’s fabulous dance studio (home dance studio of Janine Mason) with Ukulele boi (who is playing again) and watch her creating a new competition piece with a group of students.

    Hi, AussieMum!

Hope you can join us for a T-Gate. Spoke to Alex about your schedule. I won’t be going to the away games, tho.

  185. Slugger August 26, 2011 9:26 pm

Got to meet Stump Godfrey tonight while talking to D. Bright & T. Bell.

Saw Dunnachie at the VB game, Vaughn, Bubba, Kody Afusia…bunch of FB players at the game. Coach Mouse was at a table on the floor.

Couldn’t see the Tsaikos across the way.

    LASER,

I was telling Scott Harding that I’ve had 2 Australian families sitting in the seats next to me at a couple of games last season. They were both here on vacation. One family actually read about Alex in a newspaper article and decided they’d come to a game. Lots of fun!

  187. Slugger August 26, 2011 9:32 pm

    LizKauai,

Hope you all stay safe. When are you supposed to hit the (High) seas?

  188. Slugger August 26, 2011 9:36 pm

I’m glad the USF team made a game of it in the last set. It’s my alma mater, so I had to cheer for them, too. Met the parents of USF #11 who are here from WA. Mom is a first time visitor. She said they’re lucky to have 300-400 people at one of their matches. This must have been an experience for the team to play in the SSC. [Didn’t hear Billy V. announce the gate numbers.]
