A golden year

100_0900

It’s been quite a year for linebacker Corey Paredes.

Earlier this year, Paredes married his long-time girlfriend, Liz.

This past weekend, Liz gave birth to the couple’s first child, Sage Keahi Paredes.

“She’s a big girl — 8 pounds, 4 ounces,” proud papa said.

It wasn’t an easy delivery. Liz checked into the hospital Thursday afternoon. Forty hours later, Sage made her world debut.

Adding to the drama was the past Saturday’s thunderstorm that knocked out power across Oahu.

“They have generators at the hospital,” Paredes said, smiling.

The expanded family returned home Monday. Yesterday, Paredes was back at UH, training and competing in the afternoon’s 7-on-7 drills.

“I’m pretty sleep-deprived right now,” Paredes said.

But, he added: “The first time I held her, it was awesome. I never felt that kind of joy before.”

Paredes, who is entering his senior season, is expected to earn his bachelor’s degree in December.

“It’s a good year,” he said.

After completing conditioning drills, the Warriors stuck around for unsupervised 7-on-7 drills. In a show of leadership, linebacker Aaron Brown brought the water cooler:

Congrats to volleyball Warrior Jonas Umlauft, who was named to the CapitalOne CoSIDA Academic All-America second team.  He was named in the men’s at-large category (fencing, golf, gymnastics, hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling).

Umlauft, who has attended UH two years, is on track to earn his bachelor’s degree at  the end of the spring 2012 semester and his master’s in 2013. He is majoring in engineering, and has aced all but one of his UH courses (he got a B during a course in his first semester) in amassing a 3.93 cumulative grade-point average.

    oh the heat.

thus far, they just don’t play like champions. in both losses a fourth quarter meltdown has led to their demise. they really should have put this series away already.

they out match the mavs in all but two categories. on paper they should be destroying the mavs.

one, they lack the heart of the dallas boys to kick it up in the fourth quarter and do not play with a sense of urgency which is necessary to become a champion.

two, it seems that the coaching staff from the miami team is being outwitted in game management, bench jockeying, and getting the most out of his team for four quarters.

i hope for his sake they can still pull it off or he’ll be standing in line on mililani street.

however, i will bet the house the heat gets it in the next game.

  18. Pauoa Boy June 8, 2011 3:18 am

I agree the Heat play dumb and go into retard mode in the 4th. They play too much individual ball down the stretch and lose focus while Dallas just competes and moves the ball around getting quality looks at the basket. Miami should’ve swept the Mavs already but they don’t finish and keep letting the Mavs take over in the 4th quarter. To be honest I would like the Heat to win but the way they are playing, they deserve to lose. I dislike Dallas but appreciate a team with heart who actually plays like a team instead of a team with too much inidividuals tryna win it all on their own. I think Spoelstra is relying too much on his big three to take over the game and pull out wins. Not so fast when you got Dirk the Dork hitting every free throw and can scorch the rim at any time, Terry who can pop from anywhere, Chandler grabbing rebounds like crazy, Marion hustlin and getting buckets, Kidd dishin dimes, and Barea slashin everywhere… Still Heat should win, but the Big 3 need to step it up and play like they want to win, Lebron especially…time to prove you can finish and win a Championship cause D. Wade can’t do it all…

  19. Garret June 8, 2011 4:01 am

Congratulations to Corey Paredes and Liz!

It is awesome to hear that Corey will graduate in December! That means that he can focus on his pro football goals after the season is over, which is great, but the most important thing is that he’ll get his degree.

Graduating in December also helps UH with scholarship flexibility, since they can get players to enroll in January and count for 2011 or 2012.

  21. Garret June 8, 2011 4:04 am

Nice to read about Drew Loftus turning down a football scholarship from NMSU to walk on to UH. I hope that he earns playing time eventually, as that would give him a chance to earn a scholarship.

The 8-game conference schedule should enable JD to keep coming up with attractive schedules. Someone yesterday said that UH would only be able to schedule 1 AQ school each year, but JD has already proven that he can get 2 or more teams from AQ conferences. Look at the upcoming schedule:

    2011:

    Colorado

    Washington

    BYU

    2012:

    USC

    BYU

2013 (this season has an extra week, so the Hawaii Exception is increased in value):

    USC

    Oregon State

    BYU

    Navy

    Army

    2014

    Oregon State

    Colorado

    Washington

BYU (my assumption, since I think that the UH-BYU agreement was contingent on the MWC playing just 8 conference games)

    2015

    Colorado

    Washington

    Navy

BYU (my assumption, since I think that the UH-BYU agreement was contingent on the MWC playing just 8 conference games)

    Ditto —

Congrats to Paredes Family ! – Looking for All-American Season AND to Enjoy the Future A-A Daughter; curious to hear (Bobby in the A.M.1420 -Thursday?) on how Corey was NOT one of the Top National Linebackers in Phil Steele’s No. 1 Football Pre-Season Guide (got mine today @ King/Fort Street Magazine 538-0266 Across McDonald’s (Duane) – CONTRARY to some radio reports, checked every staff @ Borders & Barnes & Noble (including checking receivables in back storeroom, and no one could verify receipt of Phil Steeles’; when ? Duane has a direct-line relationship with PSStaff and beats other stores to his 18+ boxes per year shipments); Bobby C. scheduled Thursday A.M. to challenge Phil Steele Live on How the usually reliable and Hawaii-Friendly PS Mag could miss on Corey & LB Co. — Corey is the Manti who stayed home — both leading their schools/Conferences in Tackles and Big Plays — with this year’s expected better/improved LB support staff, i expect Corey to be Free-er this season to pursue more Big Plays …(like chasing down Reno’s Kaepernick to secure their Only Loss…))

Agree on The Classic Match-UP for the Ultimate Team Sport: Dallas Team Play versus The individual (and weak-coached/disciplined) Superstar Style of Miami … 2-2 with So many Game Barn-Burners to boot …

  24. Garret June 8, 2011 4:35 am

UH offered a scholarship to 300-pound JC DT Kevin Laudermill. Arizona State and Iowa State offered him scholarships before UH did and other schools like UCLA are talking with him. UH loses both Tuipulotu and Meatoga after this season, so getting a beast JC DT would seem like a recruiting priority.

  26. Wes'side Warrior June 8, 2011 5:06 am

Great read on Drew Loftus. As our program consistently improves, and people realize those who came through our program can succeed in the NFL, we should continue to be more attractive to new recruits and transfers. Just gotta keep those “W’s” coming.

I think we gonna be ok on the Dline. Kani, Vaugh, and Zach gonna be some big shoes to fill, but I feel good about Haku, Geordon, Matagiese, and Manapuna. One or two JUCO dlinemen would be good, but I’d rather go the freshmen route.

(Hi everyone! Posting twice in a week, it must be summer.)

And I thought I did well in school—Jonas has a higher GPA than I did. Heck, his overall GPA is higher than my major GPA. And he does all that while playing volleyball. Hmm … I guess I could have studied harder.

Can’t complain about being up early, now.

It’s how you apply yourself and how well you get along with people — that’s what matters.

  51. warriorsun June 8, 2011 7:42 am

drew loftus is a great get!

he is tall, 6-3 and has speed, 4.5 and is athletic. not just speed, but football on-the-field speed.

The bestway to describe drew–he is a greg salas running as a shot-gun QB….taller, faster (at the same age) and makes tacklers miss by instinctive moves or brut determination.

idk about playing QB for the warriors, esp in our highly regimented offense, plus his arm maybe suspect, but this athlete is a baller and bonafide gamer. to be honest, the only QBs we have now with his athleticism–is moniz and graves. but loftus is taller with greater range in running ability. i like him.

    Good morning folks!

Glad to see you posting again Mr J (changed from “J-boy”). I know you’re been a dedicated lurker during these busy times. Update for gg: Jason is already a successful math teacher because of his 100% dedication to his students and he has more talent than any 3 of us put together (except Garret of course). OK J, you can pay me off by teaching me about pivot tables.

I like the kind of student athletes we’re attracting! Welcome to the Islands Drew and Sage! Also liked the things said by Mr. Adams a few days ago on the WB.

    Gotta study now for a mid-term tomorrow…bbl

  59. gigi-hawaii June 8, 2011 8:22 am

Tom, that’s a nice song! I do hope this is THE year for Dallas!

BG, I know what you mean about Jason. He’s incredible.

But, why do you have a midterm? Thought you graduated already.

  60. gigi-hawaii June 8, 2011 8:24 am

Three guys from the roofing company are here, tearing up my roof.

Sure hope it doesn’t rain today.

And, I hope the guys don’t fall through the roof and into my house!

They are making such a ruckus right now!

  61. jm2375 June 8, 2011 8:31 am

BG – #58 – for the right price, I’ll teach you about pivot tables. 😀

  62. Stephen Tsai June 8, 2011 8:37 am

    Jm:

    Indeed, it’s true.

The UH coaches said Umlauft was on the “four-year plan.”

I said that it’s always impressive when a student-athlete, with all of the demands, can earn a degree in four years.

They said: No, Umlauft is on the four-year plan to get a master’s. He’s going to get his bachelor’s degree in three years.

    That guy is pretty amazing.

  63. Stretch June 8, 2011 8:52 am

#62 – met his girlfriend a few months back and believe it or not, SHE was the #1 student in their high school class, Jonas was #2.

  64. Stephen Tsai June 8, 2011 8:55 am

    Slugger:

Yep, the 7s were run after 5 p.m.

Because it’s summer and everybody has different schedules (work, school, births), there are several options on when to work out. The most popular running time is in the afternoon. The players sprint the length of the football field (along the sideline), walk across (along the goal line), sprint back, then walk across. Repeat. And repeat. And repeat. Conditioning coach Grent Steen runs those drills. Then they do a bunch of stretches and other drills.

After Grant leaves, the players go through position drills.

    Then it’s the 7 on 7s.

I think they’re going to start the Friday-at-the-beach sessions soon.

  65. Stephen Tsai June 8, 2011 8:55 am

    Stretch:

#63. What a dumb jock. lol.

  66. Stephen Tsai June 8, 2011 8:57 am

    Strech:

So, basically, they were the Gigi and Hubby of their German high school?

  67. rage777 June 8, 2011 8:58 am

If Umlauft is getting his Electrical Engineering degree in 3 years it is truly amazing. I am not sure how he would be able to accomplish that. When I was in college, they didn’t even have enough engineering courses to graduate in four years. Especially with all the cuts to the University since then. Unless he had some very lucky scheduling of classes to get there. I took 15 or 18 credits every semester and I still graduated in 4 1/2 years. The last semester I only had two courses, because they weren’t being offered in the previous semester.

After being out of school for a while now, I have to say that the University of Hawaii Enginnering program is a lot better than other colleges. It might be just because of the individual people, but UH taught me more than people at USC or UCLA.

  68. gigi-hawaii June 8, 2011 9:02 am

    ST, huh?

  69. Stephen Tsai June 8, 2011 9:09 am

The other thing about Umlauft is that he also has to help pay his way to college.

Men’s volleyball is a revenue sport, turns a profit, but yet none of the players has a full ride. I remember Nejc Zemljak running toward the locker room still dressed in his Chef Mavro’s uniform because he got off work late.

Then there was Joshua Walker working in the Nagatani Center.

Even the coaches have extra work. Jeff Hall will be coaching the Outrigger 18s this summer.

  70. Stephen Tsai June 8, 2011 9:11 am

Also, for many of the volleyball players, their primary source of transportation is a skateboard. They’re really long skateboards, but still …

  71. gigi-hawaii June 8, 2011 9:12 am

As a parent, I am at my wit’s end because my daughter has decided not to apply to WICHE schools, which would have charged her resident’s tuition for graduate school.

Reason is that the student has to agree to work for 4 years in HAWAII after graduation.

She doesn’t want to live in Hawaii, because life here is BORING.

    grrrr…!!!

  72. gigi-hawaii June 8, 2011 9:14 am

ST, couldn’t they apply for grants?

Daughter has received $6,000 in grants so far.

Next year, UH will deduct $2,000 from her tuition per semester.

  73. duffer June 8, 2011 9:18 am

    @BG

Even I know about Pivot Tables! 🙂

    Follow the PT Wizard.

Sorry Gigi, but I agree with your daughter. I love the islands, but I just wanted to get away from the humidity. After I graduated from college, I got married a month later, then moved to Cali 9 days after that. My wife still reminds me that we never went on a honeymoon. Although I tell her that going to California was our honeymoon.

  76. Da Punchbowl Kid June 8, 2011 9:40 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

    BEAAAAMMMM!!!

The football gods have smiled upon thee. I was going to add two more season tickets to my current five, but for days and days the ticket office tells me the two additional seats can only be in the row in front of us seats 9 and 10. Our current five have always been seats 11-15. LAME SAUCE!!! WEAK SAUCE!!!!!!!!!!

So TODAY, since everybody paid me in cash, I had to go to the box office and BEHOLD!!!!!!!!! All of a sudden two seats in the current row are available!!!!!!! Now got seats 9-15 in the same row!!!!!!!!!!

I should have known the lady dancing hula in front of the Burger King on Beretania near University Avenue all by herself on the sidewalk was a good sign!

So to “Aunty Kealoha” TANKS AH!!!!!!!!!!! 😆

  79. albinohawaiian808 June 8, 2011 10:10 am

@ bigislandkurt i think its a great idea to go out and get a JC player at DT they are proven to have made progress and are more developed mentally and physically i agree that we should bring in freshman DL but we cant look at them as potential starters and make an immediate impact at the D1 level going the JC route is a good way to go

  87. jm2375 June 8, 2011 10:36 am

So, in 2013, UH plays all 3 service academies?

  88. Derek June 8, 2011 10:38 am

#83 Steve M., the best rendition of “I Am Hawaii” to me is by Don Ho. I have been trying to find it, but can’t so far. It was on one of his albums when I was in college (a long time ago).

Sorry to say, but I’ve been to a lot of places on the mainland, in college, in the Army, traveling, on tours, been to mainland seminars and conferences, etc. and there is no better place to live than in Hawaii. I don’t like very hot and cold weather places. The Hawaii humidity is nothing compared to places in the South and especially Washington D.C. during the summer. Hawaii is mild. I prefer the sun and the beaches and the golf courses. Travel is always good to experience things, but coming back to home to Hawaii is the best.

  89. gigi-hawaii June 8, 2011 10:59 am

    I agree with Derek #88.

I have lived in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Thailand, Europe and New York City.

    Hawaii is no ka oi.

If it’s too humid, turn on the a/c.

Besides, I prefer to wear muumuus. How can I wear those on the mainland???

So, in 2013, UH plays all 3 service academies?”

Will UH be eligible for the Commander-in Chief’s trophy ?

  91. Derek June 8, 2011 11:13 am

Looking ahead to 2012, we will be in the Mountain West. We lose Moniz and Austin after this year. We don’t have QB starting experience coming back for next year and no clear cut starting QB for new year. And we start next year, on the road, back to back with @ USC, and the following week, @ BYU. That is tough and daunting schedule to begin the 2012 campaign. Al, I think we need to find and get the next “holy grail” real soon. I don’t know if Justin Alo is the answer. As a grayshirt he’s coming in the program in January as a true freshman. David Graves, Cayman Shutter, Corey Neilson, and Keven Spain all have to step

it up. Right now, it looks real wide open. We also need to replace the interior defensive line w/ Tuipulotu, Meatoga, and Masch leaving. That’s the greatest need for 2012 recruiting, besides the big time QB.

  92. jm2375 June 8, 2011 11:16 am

derek…every year represents a new challenge. will the need be the holy grail, oline, dline, db, wr, sb, lb’s, coaches?

it is why recruiting is so important to a ny program.

it is the stuff that brings anticipation and interest to the program.

    recruiting = reloading

and oh by the way…my guess is next year it will be a showdown between david graves and jeremy higgins. with shutter a possible surprise entry in to the quest for the holy grail.

but, hey…i am looking for to this year first.

  100. al June 8, 2011 11:51 am

    yup…heat…bet the house.

  101. Derek June 8, 2011 11:54 am

Al, at least reloading is a lot better than rebuilding! Yeah, this year is first, but at the same time good planning and an eye to the future is a good thing. The Warriors have already offered 2013 recruits Correa, Koehler, Sua, and Tabuyo. I hope the Warriors can land John Ursua for football and allow him to play basketball too, ala Ostrowski. That option just might be the one to get this talented athlete to sign with us. At least, I hope so. What’s are your thoughts?

  102. Stephen Tsai June 8, 2011 12:00 pm

There actually is a sleeper that might enter the QB discussion. Just learned of him yesterday.

  103. Kazz June 8, 2011 12:03 pm

2:30PM = PRIME TIME ON THE MAINLAND.

    Same scenario, different year.

“MUST-WIN” on NATIONAL TV against a long-time rival.

I flipped out about the 2010 Hawaii Bowl loss to Tulsa and I still feel the same way as it was a tremendous opportunity wasted.

Now as we are about the enter the MWC as they are clamouring for AQ status, we need to carry our weight, not for the MWC’s sake, but for OUR OWN.

As far as I am personally concerned, we cannot rest on the fact that we found a home conference for football, with the way things are going, NO ONE is really “safe”.

We must be SELFISH and look out for ourselves and only WE can ensure our continued survival as a D1 program.

WE MUST GO BAN-KAI ON BYU!!!

  104. warriorsun June 8, 2011 12:13 pm

JMO. recruiting has been improving, especially our D, in particular this year from the juco ranks. we also have a solid bumper crop of frosh on both sides of the ball that are promising, some are potential game breakers. i cant say reload until they are downloaded into the system and their practice performance evaluation serves to verify.

still, we are shot-gunning the most important position–QB. talent is not hidden in a QB. it is apparent in the first year. havent seen spain or alo, so i cant say. one passed prolifically in hs, the other didnt. one thing for sure, these two need time to develop. they need to be ready by 2013. the well will be dry by then…..unless we go juco in the 2012 class. if we do, it will speak volumes.

  105. al June 8, 2011 12:13 pm

101…it is very hard to compete at football and basketball at the d1 level.

i saw miah recently and it looks like he is still in basketball shape…lean and mean.

i’d say he needs to rebuild the 10-15lbs he lost playing roundball.

his ticket still remains on the gridiron and he needs to focus on football.

  106. al June 8, 2011 12:13 pm

    102…a name would be nice?

  107. Derek June 8, 2011 12:27 pm

I’m with gigi. I’m pulling for the Mavericks. I don’t like the Heat. I don’t like Lebron and I don’t like D. Wade. I feel like they are smug, like they feel like they are entitled or something. On the other hand, I have no thoughts on Bosh. I guess it’s because he’s the quiet one. I don’t like the way James left Cleveland. I don’t like the way Wade shows after he makes a basket, like “look at me, I’m great.” I was so happy Wade missed the free throw and mis-handled the pass at the end. At one time, I was rooting for James when he was with Cleveland. Now, I don’t like the guy at all. I hate to say this, but I even like Kobe Bryant now, at least a lot more than Wade or James. I never liked the Lakers and I never will, but I have to credit Bryant for being loyal with the Lakers and staying with one team during his career. That’s why I will always like Micheal Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson. David Robinson, Tim Duncan, etc. because they were true to their teams. Yes, I even liked the Bad Boys, the Detroit Pistons. Mostly, I like a lot of the Western Conference teams like Portland, San Antonio, Dallas, Oklahoma City, Denver, and I’m taking a liking to Golden State now since Mark Jackson will be new Head Coach and Jerry West is a consultant. In the east, I am partial to the Celtics, Magic, and the Bulls. Oh, and I like the way the Memphis Grizzlies play. They are tough. Oh well, I hope the Mavericks prevail. I want to see owner, Mark Cuban win a title because he really takes cares of his players and that it has been well documented.

  108. gigi-hawaii June 8, 2011 1:08 pm

Dirk, LeBron, and Wade — these are the best athletes in the world. That’s why it’s so exciting to watch these guys compete.

Bummers that Dirk is so sick with a sinus infection and a cough. It’s something that won’t disappear overnight.

For that reason, I won’t be surprised if the Heat win on Thursday, but I will still root for the Mavs. Should be a great game!

I enjoyed the MBA program so much I decided to get another masters. Now enrolled in “Global Leadership and Sustainable Development” at HPU (haven’t run into Jason yet). The MBA fueled my desire to start a business (don’t ask me “what”) and this current program of study encompasses the area I’m totally interested in…in a nationally recognized program to boot. Life can be so fantastic once a body “retires”! 😀

  110. gigi-hawaii June 8, 2011 1:11 pm

It’s gotten really dark and overcast where I live.

Hope the guys finish the roof over the enclosed lanai today, as they promised!

Tomorrow, they will work on the garage roof.

Everytime they walk on the roof, the ceiling shakes.

So far, they have not fallen through!

    lol

  111. gigi-hawaii June 8, 2011 1:12 pm

BG, you have the brains to seek a Ph.D.

    Have you thought of that?

Good luck and best wishes to you!

  112. BG June 8, 2011 1:14 pm

    jmxxxx and duffer

I’m bringing my laptop to the next t-gate!!! In my defense (and a compliment to duffer) I’d bet a big lunch that I could count on one hand the number of senior citizens at a football game who could do pivot tables (expertly)…and duffer would be one of them!

  113. Curt June 8, 2011 1:16 pm

Congratulations to the Paredes ohana. What a blessing.

  114. Curt June 8, 2011 1:18 pm

Wow. That Umlauft is something else. ST, did you ever do a profile/story on this young man? I’d sure love to read it.

What’s exciting to hear also is that we have another German recruit in the wings. Great balls of fire. Keep it going Coach Wade.

  115. kawika49 June 8, 2011 1:18 pm

#112 Tried doing a pivot table using dbase and clipper way back when.

  116. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 8, 2011 1:21 pm

    #91,

Part of what needs to be done is when (or if) we lay enough points on teams like SJSU, NMSU etc and we put in the backups, we actually let the QB’s run plays and have them try and score.

Its a bunch of crap IMO to have the backups go in just to run the clock out. If we have a comfortable lead, let them open up and do the voodoo. Real game experience is invaluable the last time I checked, might as well use it if we get the chance.

  117. BG June 8, 2011 1:21 pm

gg, I try very hard not to put contraints on myself. However, I go where my interests carry me (with reasonable consideration for my family). Thought abut a Ph.d but decided that I needed too big a shovel to travel that route. “Sustainable Resources”, on the other hand, I cherish the idea of making a better world for the younger generations to come. Definitely give me a better feeling of self-worth.

  118. BG June 8, 2011 1:23 pm

#123 Your comment implies that the new QB is good enough to compete with our current stable of QBs and the incoming recruits. That would be great. I say we’ve got some talent at QB. Too bad we can’t give them all playing time.

  127. ai-eee-soos June 8, 2011 1:48 pm

  129. Curt June 8, 2011 1:50 pm

    ai-eee-soos

#127 Very funny. Yes, we’re on a budget and can’t pay Pryor enough.

  130. Derek June 8, 2011 1:54 pm

I’m not sure how to read what is a “sleeper”. Was Colt Brennan a sleeper? After all, he was a walk-on, but he was rated a 3 star player by Scout, Inc. A sleeper to me could be either a well kept secret, or a “reach”. Somebody who has had not much experience in the position, say only 1 year as a starter, or someone who has exhibited some talent, but haven’t yet really produced yet, but has potential if they work at it. Or somebody who is not that big now, but could grow within the next year to two, ala Aaron Rodgers. At any rate, we’re patiently waiting for Stephen’s report next week, or whenever he decides.

  131. Turfwar June 8, 2011 1:59 pm

I’m guessing it’s the QB who’s leaving Nebraska. Or could Andrew be coming home? By the way nice article in Volleyball Magazine ST. Just got around to reading it this week but it’s good to see you contributing to a mag I’ve been subscribing to for a long time and needs more seasoned writers. Especially writers who can offer a recruiting angle to the coverages. A left handed RS would be fun to watch in a Wahine uniform.

  132. Guy in the office June 8, 2011 2:04 pm

turfwar: yes, andrew may as well come home, redshirt and have 3 years to play in the mountain west. why would he stay in a conference that has little stability?

  133. NCAA June 8, 2011 2:06 pm

#126 All QB’s should be able to compete. Be the cream.

  134. Kazz June 8, 2011 2:13 pm

    Pryor to UH????

Hmmm… I still have my receipt from the season tickets I renewed today.

  135. Curt June 8, 2011 2:16 pm

    #131,

If Cody Green is transferring to Hawaii, I will buy you 2 cases of beer and give up rice for a month. No ways he is coming here.

Andrew coming home is a possibility and something worth doing more research. Anyone have his cell phone number?

  137. kawika49 June 8, 2011 2:24 pm

BG for you only, was on the development team in Santa Monica for clipper Summer 87.

  138. Curt June 8, 2011 2:28 pm

    Sleeper sleeper on the ball,

Who is the mightiest of them all?

    Is it you,

Or will it be someone else who stands so tall?

  139. maddog 50 June 8, 2011 2:41 pm

    Go Warriors–73

  140. Stephen Tsai June 8, 2011 2:41 pm

    It’s not Manley.

  141. NCAA June 8, 2011 2:43 pm

LOL, and he didn’t say it wasn’t Green.

  142. Derek June 8, 2011 2:44 pm

I’m not sold on Manley. He doesn’t run well at all. Personally, I would prefer a dual QB at UH. Someone who can run and throw equally well. Such a QB would be a big weapon. A good example of that is Cam Newton, or even Jake Locker. Bryant Moniz runs well enough and throws well enough. He’s not a great runner or a great passer, but he’s very good. Tyrell Pryor is a great runner and a good passer. Colt Brennan, at UH was a decent runner and a great passer. The best QB in college right now, Andrew Luck, is a great passer and a good runner. His running ability is very underrated. I just like athletic quarterbacks. Mariota from St. Louis (signed w/ Oregon) is a very good runner and a very good passer. Just my opinion. I just like the Steve Young type of QB.

  143. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 8, 2011 2:45 pm

This article on (ex-)Nebraska transfer Cody Green talks about Boise State being a possibility. Although the usual suspects in aTm, Texas being more favorable choices.

That would be crazy of BSU could get him…sick actually. lol

    http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/blog/dr_saturday/post/Could-former-Nebraska-QB-Cody-Green-end-up-at-Bo?urn=ncaaf-wp1983

  144. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 8, 2011 2:47 pm

Ok, lets stop with the Green talk. Pryor will play for us before Green. Its just mean to be giving me that kind of *bleep*. lol.

  145. bigislandkurt June 8, 2011 2:51 pm

Tsai, you had to go there with your sleeper post huh? Now you got my mind racing! So I’m guessing that you are talking about an incoming transfer? Higgins? Inquiry minds want to know!

    BIK

  146. Curt June 8, 2011 2:56 pm

  148. ai-eee-soos June 8, 2011 3:16 pm

    # 140 – that’s good news to me.

    # 142 – yah, I’m not sold on him either. His performance last year wasn’t so hot;

and, he never received another offer, after attending that “elite” QB camp on Maui.

  149. kruzen June 8, 2011 3:17 pm

  156. Curt June 8, 2011 3:49 pm

Note that in ST’s post #102, he used the word, “might,” meaning that it’s not a sure thing yet. He also used the word, “sleeper.” What does that word mean to you? To me it means it means someone who currently is under the radar and not expected to be a starter but has talent. Would Green or Pryor fall into that category? I’d say no but ST seems think that he’s good enough and will be in the mix for 2012. Hmmm. Sorry, I just can’t decipher these subterranean messages very well.

  157. Stephen Tsai June 8, 2011 3:59 pm

    R.I.P Hari Kojima.

  158. Stephen Tsai June 8, 2011 4:01 pm

    Curt:

    That’s a lot of analysis.

Wait a week. I’ll tell you who it is and whether the situation will develop.

But, like I said, I found out sorta-sorta by accident.

  159. Derek June 8, 2011 4:07 pm

I’ll get excited when the prospect, recruit is called “big time”. Until then, I won’t get too jacked up. Example, when they said that Jonas Umlauft was big time and mentioned his measurables, I got excited. When Dave Shoji says Jane Croson is “big time” and hits the ball with a different sound than most player, I get excited. When they said Kolten Wong was the real deal, I got excited. I haven’t heard Gib Arnold say any of his new recruits were big time, but maybe he’s more guarded. I don’t know about these messages, but word sleeper doesn’t conjure me with too much excitement. It’s more like, we have to wait and see. Most players doesn’t measure up to pre-billing. Some exceed expectations, like Greg Salas and Devone Bess. Corey Paredes is also another good example. Former walk-on, made 1st team All WAC

  160. Curt June 8, 2011 4:10 pm

Thanks Stephen. Of course, you sure know how to get us all worked up. Okay. I’ll be patient. Right. The good thing is that we need more QBs on the roster. 🙂

All I know is, I used to pay attention when Hari started coming on the show, ’cause I used to have to help clean da fish all da time. Had to learn how to do it right. Hari Kojima was “da man” back den.

  179. gigi-hawaii June 8, 2011 5:14 pm

It’s not easy for all foreign students.

I know a woman from Japan, who speaks very poor English and has a hard time understanding spoken English.

She was a student at KCC and wants to remain in Hawaii, but the only way for that to happen is if she gets married to an American.

    So far no luck.

She has to return to Japan in August.

Wondering with (im)patience for the name of the maybe QB.

HA! Sounds like waiting for something to happen albeit we do not know who, what, when, why, and how. But, we are waiting, never the less!

  181. wafan June 8, 2011 5:16 pm

    GG . . .

I work with high school kids. They have been learning English from their early education years. English is no problem for them. So nice to actually hear English as opposed to American!

  182. wafan June 8, 2011 5:17 pm

Too bad for the Japanese woman. She should have been working toward US citizenship if she really wants to remain.

  183. wafan June 8, 2011 5:20 pm

    Long week so far.

    12 more wake ups.

  184. wafan June 8, 2011 5:24 pm

    Nytal!

  185. gigi-hawaii June 8, 2011 5:25 pm

Wafan, don’t forget about lunch in August with hubby and me.

Was thinking of bringing my mom, but she probably wouldn’t remember you from Damien days.

    Her dementia is bad.

  186. al June 8, 2011 5:42 pm

i remember when hari was just a youngster out of high school cutting and cleaning fish for tamashiro market. his pidgin english style was something refreshing to hear in contrast to bruce carter’s perfect english and straight laced demeanor.

was interesting as hari would learn how to cook from many a local chef. none could turn his great character and personality down.

kojima would frequent many a restaurant that i happened to work at.

    good guy.

  187. al June 8, 2011 5:43 pm

kawika49…perhaps our paths crossed streams back in the day.

  188. bigislandkurt June 8, 2011 5:46 pm

I wish they’d run the old let’s go fishing episodes. RIP Hari Kojima. 66 is still young these days. Yes, he started as a the fish cutter, but soon took over that show and made it his own. Viewers wanted to see him, not Bruce Carter or Stan. Hari was the man and the spinoff — Hari’s kitchen was a CLASSIC! Man, I wish these episodes were available to view somewhere.

    BIK

  189. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 8, 2011 5:53 pm

al…are you THAT MUCH older than Hari?

  190. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 8, 2011 5:57 pm

    #188,

The Mike Sakamoto, Bruce Carter, Hari Kojima fishing shows were da best! No can beat ’em. I mean Ben Wong is a cool dude and all but nothing beat those guys.

Btw, wasn’t Ben Wong working at the Oceanarium before?

  191. kawika49 June 8, 2011 6:02 pm

al how’s about Nai Doo (sic), Allen Maguire or Noe Kimi?

  192. kawika49 June 8, 2011 6:06 pm

#189 Hari had more energy than his age. When he was on, he was on.

  193. NYUH June 8, 2011 6:08 pm

Between Allen Sampson and Darius Bright, John Hardy-Tuliau is getting some good training.

JJ looking to have a good year.

  194. gigi-hawaii June 8, 2011 6:12 pm

Hari’s Kitchen? Maybe that’s where I saw him and not on Sam Choy’s Kitchen! Confused.

  195. bigislandkurt June 8, 2011 6:15 pm

    “Hi gang, Hari hea”

    BIK

  196. kawika49 June 8, 2011 6:17 pm

#194 Hari new how to cut fish. He was efficient in skinning and cutting, and had an understanding of texture and taste in different kinds of fish.

  197. kawika49 June 8, 2011 6:33 pm

BIK, you need to set up a pre-season TG! Let us know.

  198. kawika49 June 8, 2011 6:34 pm

#195 You and BIF could get together.

  199. Curt June 8, 2011 6:53 pm

    Shhh. It’s 199.

  200. Curt June 8, 2011 6:53 pm

    200

  201. Curt June 8, 2011 6:54 pm

Don’t wake up al. He’s getting his beauty sleep.

  202. Curt June 8, 2011 6:57 pm

al’s the real sleeper…not the QB ST is talking about.

  203. gigi-hawaii June 8, 2011 7:00 pm

    You’re a funny guy, Curt.

Does Meg know how funny you are? Does she read the WB?

  204. gigi-hawaii June 8, 2011 7:01 pm

Methinks Al has just finished dinner and is washing the dishes! What a guy!

  205. BG June 8, 2011 7:07 pm

Back for a few minutes…hey k49! You’ve been here, there, everywhere and doing everything! Right on! Isn’t it a kick to know that the cellphones we carry around have more computing power than the best pc we had back in the day? I know, I know! Let’s not started down this path again! But, I gotta put in this one tidbit because I thought it was funny each time. When we had to dial in for our internet connection and those funny bells would go off to signal we were in to the system. lol

  206. A-joe June 8, 2011 7:14 pm

The only person I ever seen that could out-talk Hari was Beth-Ann Nishijima of Nori’s. She left him speechless everytime! Too funny.

Worked with Mike Sakamoto in Hilo at Creative Arts. One day he’s screening and designing t-shirts with us, next thing he’s got his own show on TV! WTH!

    FISHINGGGGGGG TALESSSSS…. =)

  207. BG June 8, 2011 7:14 pm

jmxxx, I hope you see this. I don’t see how we can get on the players to practice and hone their skills if we don’t do the same. No likee be one hypocrite! So, I think a practice t-gate is a necessity and not optional. I think last year’s practice t-gate showed emphatically how rusty we were. Equipment needed to be maintained and our food preparation polished. New recipes to try out. Good Lord! We can’t just rest on last year’s laurels!!! Now…where’s that Sailor Blue guy?

  208. Curt June 8, 2011 7:15 pm

So far, the QBs competing for 2012 are Graves, Spain, Shutter, Nielson, Alo, Higgins, and da Mystery Sleeper. That’s alot of competition. I would think the coaches have got to cut down on those numbers.

  209. BG June 8, 2011 7:16 pm

Howzit A-Joe! Give our best to A-Sports…we miss you folks!

  210. BG June 8, 2011 7:18 pm

#203 Who’s she? I think I would like to meet her.

  212. duffer June 8, 2011 7:46 pm

    Hey ST,

Was nice to see you. When I see Keku, I’ll send your regards!

    Pride

sent a text to JK, he says ALOHA. Neva see you in 30 years. He’ll be with me at Turtle Bay!

  213. Curt June 8, 2011 7:49 pm

    Keep studying BG. Ace ’em.

  214. al June 8, 2011 8:20 pm

189…haha. no, no, no i am much more junior than hari.

  215. al June 8, 2011 8:25 pm

curt…i find it more amusing these days to watch you trip out trying to grab the century marks.

  216. al June 8, 2011 8:26 pm

k49…it was the other person that i knew. one day we can discuss this over a green bottle or two.

  217. asdf June 8, 2011 8:26 pm

    derek-

you may have forgotten, kobe bryant almost pulled a move worse than lebron. lebron was a free agent and was allowed to go wherever he pleased. kobe back in the shaq days wanted and complained and got to the point he demanded a trade because he did not want to play second-fiddle to shaq, however the lakers sent shaq packing and kept kobe…that being said he is a very good player and they were still successful but oh how winning games makes us forget the decisions these players make

  218. al June 8, 2011 8:28 pm

scary when gigi sorts out my evening plans.

our house rules are “i cook, you clean”.

since #2 cooked i cleaned. (shaking my head) how come the boss is sitting on the couch with the remote in hand as usual?

  219. al June 8, 2011 8:29 pm

curt…we just missed a big fish of a qb recently. he instead decided against the haka and will now become a duck.

  220. al June 8, 2011 8:31 pm

curt…you will know when the sleeper qb comes to town…if he does…by sound of this tune resonating throughout manoa valley.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hYV-JSjpyU

  221. gigi-hawaii June 8, 2011 8:44 pm

Curt, Meg is the wife you sleep with every night. At least, I hope you do!

Al, I cook but I clean — except when I am too sick to do so. Then daughter cleans.

I would never trust hubby to clean, because he does such a lousy job! Plus, he complains a lot.

  222. al June 8, 2011 8:47 pm

    china anyone?

brian mcinnis has the scoops on the tour being setup by panda travel to accompany the warrior basketball team. sounds reasonable at that…

  223. gigi-hawaii June 8, 2011 8:47 pm

The Warriors will be on national television 3 times this season.

Hope they don’t get stage fright and lose!

  224. al June 8, 2011 8:49 pm

i used to do that monku monku trick when it came time to clean up and of course i’d do a half-a job too. but, i felt guilty.

lose the battle but win the war i always say.

  225. al June 8, 2011 8:49 pm

now your daughter has no excuse.

  226. al June 8, 2011 8:50 pm

223…a positive opinion would have been nicer.

  227. gigi-hawaii June 8, 2011 8:51 pm

Al, how do you wash dishes?

Do you fill a bin with hot soapy water and wash dishes in the bin?

    or

are you like daughter and wash with the water running and a soapy sponge?

I do the 1st one because the dishes get cleaner that way!!!

  228. gigi-hawaii June 8, 2011 8:53 pm

of course, there’s the dishwasher for dishes, but I wash the pots the 1st way.

  229. warriorsun June 8, 2011 9:00 pm

there has been a carousel of transfering QBs this spring from major programs. Penn State and Neb are only two examples.

A myriad of reasons preceed it. And for the sake of brevity that is a seperate storyline better reserved for serials over the slubbering summer.

To be sure, loyalty runs two deep and college athletes realize it may not be all about talent that squeezs them out of the picture. Whatever the case, many of these QBs remain high value re-recruits. My point is there is no need for a “sleeper-QB” at Hawaii with so many slam dunks lingering a text message away, looking for a program and a system that can restart nfl interest. Hawaii is currently stocked with a cupboard full of “sleepers” and wake-up call is coming faster than progress.

  230. Curt June 8, 2011 9:02 pm

    al

Life is all about grabbing the century marks. What else is there to live for? Oh–I porgot; we live for Hawaii sports.

Are you talking about that Oregon QB commit, Jake Rodrigues? I don’t know how good a QB he is but the women will love this stud. He’s a 12 on a 10-point scale.

  231. gigi-hawaii June 8, 2011 9:04 pm

Curt, stud huh? I am all for studs!

Shoots, why did Mack let him get away?

  232. 2013 June 8, 2011 9:07 pm

    Ask the UHAD

  233. jm2375 June 8, 2011 9:09 pm

BG – I’m in for a practice t-gate. Especially since we’re not going on vacation this summer. I don’t have enough vacation time and hubby is on TDY the week after Screecher finishes summer school. Next year…

OK, so what about a cc next week? Any day except Tuesday is good for me. Hale Vietnam? Happy Day? Big City?

  234. Curt June 8, 2011 9:12 pm

    al

#220 That theme song is a clue? Based on your subminimal message, there’s only one QB that comes to mind. But I’m not going to guess as it could possibly mess things up. So, I’ll wait til next week when ST makes the announcement.

  235. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 8, 2011 9:16 pm

the problem with “sleepers” is that sometimes they forget to wake up…

  236. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 8, 2011 9:18 pm

re: Our Nationally Televised Game Performances.

I don’t know what our real W-L record is when we are being nationally televised but I want to say recently (3-5 years) or so its been pretty lousy.

Maybe someone has the numbers but if its not fact that we poorly perform, it sure as heck feels like it.

Anyone done the research and have the W-L record?

  237. Curt June 8, 2011 9:22 pm

    gigi

#221 I was wondering why that name sounded so familiar. She’s special.

Regarding the new Oregon QB commit, Jake Rodrigues, google his name and tell me if you agree that the ladies will drool all over this stud.

  238. SteveM June 8, 2011 9:27 pm

    Rest in Peace Hari Kojima.

I used to watch his fish cutting and cooking on Let’s Go Fishing weekly. He was great!

    …especially significant since I don’t eat seafood.

  239. Curt June 8, 2011 9:28 pm

    gigi

Apparently, there are a number of Jake Rodrigues. So go to scout.com and do the search.

  240. Curt June 8, 2011 9:30 pm

    Howzit SteveM.

  241. gigi-hawaii June 8, 2011 9:30 pm

Curt, I googled Jake. He’s cute, tall, and slim.

Has potential to be Mr. Stud. Not there yet.

    Yup.

  242. gigi-hawaii June 8, 2011 9:31 pm

Curt, how would you know what turns women on?

    lol

  243. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 8, 2011 9:33 pm

    Rodrigues is no Brady Quinn.

  244. Curt June 8, 2011 9:34 pm

I have no clue gigi what turns women on. Actually, I’m an expert on what doesn’t.

  245. MysteryPerson June 8, 2011 9:35 pm

gigi, maybe Curt is Koa-mahu, hmmmmm…….

  246. Curt June 8, 2011 9:39 pm

    MysteryPerson

#245 I don’t think I’m KoaMahu. KoaMahu has hit on me and I can tell you that I have better taste than that!

  247. gigi-hawaii June 8, 2011 9:41 pm

I can’t see Curt talking to himself when Koa-mahu comes onto him like that.

    They are 2 separate entities.

  248. MysteryPerson June 8, 2011 9:47 pm

Ok, sorry Curt, just trying to eliminate people Koa-mahu is not.

I think SailorBlue mentioned there are some renovations underway? –in any event, a “practice” tailgate doesn’t have to be near the stadium (esp. in summer). Maybe think beach, paddle/surf boards, overnight camp. Bellows? Just thinkin’ outta da box since there is no game to get to… 😆

I’m in for a Cattle Call next week in the Kaimuki 9th-12th ave area…

    (unless it’s seafuud) 😕

Each of us has a distinct personality.

    It’s really amazing.

Did I mention that I’m off next Tuesday?

    tsigh

  252. Curt June 8, 2011 9:53 pm

No problemo MysteryPerson. Are you new to the Warrior Beat? If so, welcome.

  253. SteveM June 8, 2011 9:54 pm

  255. gigi-hawaii June 8, 2011 9:58 pm

SteveM, I’m not certain I can speak for ALL women, but I have always preferred tall men like hubby.

I don’t find men who are shorter than I am to be attractive.

  256. Curt June 8, 2011 10:02 pm

    SteveM

If you want to turn women on, gigi is telling you it’s simple; just grow taller. Got it?

  257. gigi-hawaii June 8, 2011 10:04 pm

    hahahahaha!!!

  258. Curt June 8, 2011 10:05 pm

    gigi

Almost all the ads by single women state that they desire someone tall. So what should us hobbitt-like males do?

  259. gigi-hawaii June 8, 2011 10:08 pm

Curt, my 2 daughters have latched on to guys who are shorter than they are.

I think I am an anomaly. Hubby is probably too tall for me.

    He’s 6’1 and I am 5’1.

We look weird ballroom dancing together.

  260. Kazz June 8, 2011 10:10 pm

A man’s height won’t matter when the woman is horizontal.

  261. d1shima June 8, 2011 10:11 pm

  262. Curt June 8, 2011 10:12 pm

    Iwonderwhytheyhateme

#243 I don’t know much about Jake Rodrigues but he did get offers from Nebraska and UCLA in addition to Oregon. He might not be Brady Quinn but these schools seem to think highly of him.

  263. gigi-hawaii June 8, 2011 10:13 pm

    You guys use twitter?

    I never have.

Heck, I don’t even know how text message ST if I were to win a prize.

But, daughter told me she would teach me if that ever happened.

  264. Curt June 8, 2011 10:15 pm

    gigi

    Are you still ballroom dancing?

  265. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc June 8, 2011 10:15 pm

    T-Gate Stuff:

Public parks don’t allow open drinking. Not a problem for me, but for the Big Boozers, this could be an issue.

Re what makes a man attractive? Big Brains? Deep Pockets full of ka-ching? Broad shoulders and clutchable okoles? Viable pulse?

  266. gigi-hawaii June 8, 2011 10:16 pm

Curt, nah, I haven’t ballroom danced for 10 years now.

  267. gigi-hawaii June 8, 2011 10:19 pm

WDoc, that’s another thing. Not many women want to marry a guy who is more stupid than she is.

    lol

  268. d1shima June 8, 2011 10:23 pm

Rodrigues’ star rating jumped after a good showing at the Stanford Elite 11 camp last month caught Trent Dilfer’s eye and got the former SB QB touting the NorCal prepster.

  269. jm2375 June 8, 2011 10:30 pm

speaking of t-gates… I will be practicing the art of bread pudding making for a coworker who will become eligible for AARP membership on Friday. 😆

  270. Stephen Tsai June 8, 2011 10:31 pm

  272. Curt June 8, 2011 10:43 pm

    gigi

The wifey and I danced until about the time we got married. Then other things got in the way. But, it was fun while it lasted.

gigi, did you actually hike to the top of Diamond Head?

  275. LizKauai -iPad June 8, 2011 11:27 pm

Hmmm. Perhaps one of the reasons I liked Hari’s show so much is because he would follow the fish and we would enjoy the hanapaa moments. When Hawaii fish started to get thin, he would take us to Micronesia and other places where fish are still plentiful. Mmm hmmm. Made memories!

  276. LizKauai -iPad June 8, 2011 11:29 pm

Kawika49- do I know you? Was around during the Kauai Surf days and IIR.

  277. LizKauai -iPad June 8, 2011 11:30 pm

  278. MysteryPerson June 8, 2011 11:36 pm

  286. al June 9, 2011 12:58 am

237…you are showing your fem side…yikes. you can have the century markers.

does this indicate why you passed up that hot date in college….?

  287. al June 9, 2011 12:59 am

265…never thought i’d hear it from this blogger.

  288. al June 9, 2011 1:07 am

    277…linsky for sure.

if i were walters and blake i’d go too.

for walters and blake the bonus will barely cover a year’s expenses but they were surprise picks at where they got called.

    capaul’s a senior so he’ll sign.

that hs pitcher squier is intriguing. he could be a randy johnson type. he’ll probably come to the les.

these hs recruits should go college and improve and prove they can. a lot scouts would tell them that too.

now if a kid doesn’t have the college eligible academics or desire to study then he should go pro.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.
