A friend indeed
Ariel Chun, to be sure, mastered the long goodbye.
As president and chief executive officer of the UH Federal Credit Union, she passed out the plaques during UH’s Senior Night ceremonies. Too often, her presentations were preceded by lengthy whisper-whisper conversations with each recipient — a time-consuming process that drew comments from wise-acre blog hosts and television directors tapping their watches.
But teasing aside, Chun stepped up and provided a much-needed service. Chun compensated for UH’s difficult economic situation by providing marvelous plaques at no cost to the athletic department.
Her presentations might have been long, but they were heart-felt. And she provided a face — smiling, sincere and caring — to what could have been an emotionless corporate donation.
In retrospect, she took the time to care.
That’s a rare quality these days.
And, most of all, she’s just a really nice person.
Chun is retiring at the end of this year. We wish her a farewell that is as endearing as the one she provided for hundreds of UH student-athletes.

Colt was first on the list of Redskins players to watch this preseason.
Today’s update for David Veikune’s contract situation isn’t good. Veikune’s agent said that the Browns haven’t even given him a contract proposal as of last night…even though rookies were supposed to report yesterday according to the Browns, it is hard to get a deal done if the Browns don’t even make an offer! The person handling contract negotiations for Cleveland is in the first year of her job…maybe that is why she is moving so slowly on this.

I’m not an economist, but is there a point when cutting salaries isn’t good overall?
I thought what made an economy strong was its constant activity.
If you cut salaries, people spend less, and the inactivity worsens the overall economy, right?
Wrong?

DPK #56:
I think such an initiative would be met with fierce resistance by the Boyd Gaming Group as well as the rest of the Vegas gaming industry.
While I can also see the pros and cons in doing such a thing, I can also envision a multitude of angles the Vegas gaming industry can take into trying to convince the people and legislators that legalizing could be detrimental to the State. Some of those angles/talking points are rather contradictory to Vegas’s cause, but are notable nonetheless.
In the end, I echo brew808 and d1’s sentiments. “Don’t bet on it.”

Hey ST – got GPS? 🙄
No need. Got “Ferd”!
I think instead of a pay cut, which is permanent, the workers could agree to defer a percentage — 5? 10? — of their pay at no interest until the economy strengthens.
Or how about the union lend money — again at no or low interest — to the state to assist through this downturn?

ST,
Well, that’s what the economists are saying, that it’ll be bad for the economy.
Remember when Aloha Airlines employees agreed to a pay cut to help the company? Look where it got them.
Arbitration for HGEA state, judiciary, and city employees begins in September, and the employer’s books will be opened for review by the union. We’ll really see then what the shortfall looks like.
Happy Birthday wishes to Jodie, and Hurley and Tyler Too.
Another Happy Anniversary for the Tsais, Wena and Stephen, enjoy all of your good fortunes-kids, soon to be grandkid, health, friends and tsaikos and too many more to name.
OK, ST — I sent you a mango tree… 😛
Okay SteveM, I’ll send him a mango tree later on too.
payroll and benefits are a big bite in the budget, question is, will layoffs benefit the entire state-leaner and more efficient or will services drop and the economy erode further south. Seniority doesn’t mean keeping the best, most productive worker, the union wants loyalty of long term dues paying members on the work line. Maybe Gonzu can help by passing out some of his cabbages, he claims it helps the brain and a whole lot of other things.

Isaiah Lavea
Defensive tackle, 6-2, 285
Kamehameha High School, Honolulu, Hawai`i
Played in East-West all-star game … second-team all-Interscholastic League defensive lineman … two-year starter … said head coach
David Stant, “He’s big and strong. He’s really physical. He’s very quiet; a gentle giant.” … said position coach Kanani Sousa, “Isaiah
is a very, very naturally strong athlete. He possesses a lot of natural strength. He’s has very good size. He’s smart and he works at
all the things that he has to to be successful. He has a great work ethic and he’s a student of the game. He’s a great citizen and has
great character. He’s a quite humble young man.” … also competes in track and field.
he redshirted his first year, last year. does he still sit out this year?
Wow! Afternoon already! Howzit everybody…
DPK how about keeping gambling off shore like cruise ship with a shuttle ship going back and forth. That’s one way to keep tighter scrutiny on participants. Invite the Boyd group to bid on the contract since they run a couple of gambling “boats”…that might make them more amenable. Oh, and put in a clause that a small percentage will go directly to UH sports!
Where did Gabe Tuata land after Pasadena CC and Mt Sac JC?
Hoohiki,
The contract delay is NOT the fault of David Veikune or his agent! lava summarized the situation well, Dawn Aponte is *not* getting her job done. She is in her first year with an NFL team and they put her in charge of negotiating contract, and she has been extremely slow about going about it.
If it was *just* Veikune without a contract, maybe you could think that the blame was with him or his agent. However, Cleveland drafted 3 players in the second round and NONE of them have contracts! Even worse, none of them apparently have even gotten a contract offer from Cleveland! Veikune hasn’t rejected any offers from Cleveland…they haven’t made him an offer yet!
Cleveland had their rookie orientation yesterday. As of last night none of their 3 second round picks had contract offers…they cannot agree to a contract if Cleveland’s contracts person isn’t talking to them!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY JODIE You young ladies were such a huge help at the blog celebration last year!!!
Interesting chart put together by Phil Steele that tries to quantify the experience that each college football team has on their roster. It takes into account the number of Seniors, Juniors, Sophomores and Freshmen, the number of Senior starters, the rest of the seniors in the 2-deep chart, the % of returning offensive yards, the % of total tackles (as a measure of the defense’s experience), and the career starts returning for the OL (a key measure for any team prediction in my opinion). This is a nice way to try to compare the experience of each team in an unbiased way. It isn’t perfect, no stat like this could be, but it is a nice way to compare teams.
With the huge turnover in defense this year, I thought that UH would be really low, so UH’s #82 experience ranking doesn’t surprise me. I actually thought it would be lower. Wisconsin is even lower on the experience rankings, #91. NMSU is #115, not surprising after their coaching change and roster turnover.
La Tech has the 8th most experienced team, another way to say they have almost all of their key people back from their bowl-winning season. SJSU is #16 on the experience rankings which means that Coach Tomey has an experienced team to lead this year. Utah State is at #19 and Washington State is at #23…Washington State’s experience rating surprised me because I thought they had a huge roster turnover.
Happy birthday and anniversary to the Tsai’s!
Or is that Tsae, or Tsais, or Tsaises, or Tsaii?

d1….sam’s club sold out last week and maui verizonwireless as well.
The Potter movie is a good one!
Post 139 is interesting re turnover rates. I’m curious about Boise State’s turnover, although BSU’s system has certain plays for certain players, so it is easier for them to adjust on offense by calling more plays designed for returnees.
Re BSU, I’m surprised the NCAA looks the other way on the blue field – blue jersey thing. That reeks to me. I suspect a Herman Frazier type is behind it all.

but you didn’t fool me on that one.

Terrence Apted from James Madison, Free Agent contract with the Redskins. Rated as the 103rd OG in the 2009 draft probably could have done better with a faster 40. Ran 5.64 at his pro day.

doesnt lavea have to sit out 2 years, so he wont be eligible till 2011….hes better off going to a JC for a year, then transferring to UH.

The rule for transferring from a WAC school to another WAC school is two years of sitting out. This applies to football and basketball–the other sports only require 1 year.

Pride,
Thank you for the information–I’ll see what I can do to pass the information along.
there might be a loophole if he was there for only 1 semester and not on scholarship…but im not 100% sure.
I pick on Ralph, and he says nothing….
I don’t bother to mention him…. and he get’s huffy! Sheeesssshhh…. 🙄
me… I’m hoping for a loophole…. hope, hope, hope… 😀
Looks like the Rangers have a swine flu problem, the first team I’ve read being hit this hard. The swine flu is expected to come back in force in the Fall for the flu season…right in time for football. If one player gets it, it could easily spread through a locker room…

letsgowarriors,
You are correct according to the Pac-10’s compliance document. This is what it says about exceptions to the WAC’s intraconference transfer rule:
i have no idea how manupuna and lavea will do at the D1 level, but i hope masch and hafoka make a t smooth transition from JC to D1. if they pan out, i have confidence in our 2010 DL w/ those 2, Tuipulotu, Meatoga and Correa.
letsgowarriors,
However, if he is just coming back to Hawaii now that could mean that he was at Idaho for 2 semesters…so the exception wouldn’t apply to him.
Any kind of depth helps with any injuries, and with reps on the practice field (not just for the starters)…. IMHO 😐
he was a scholarship student/athlete in fall 2008 and was redshirted that semester. not sure if he went to the second semester.
Would the WAC rules even if the player went to a non-football college for a year, then transferred to UH? 🙄
i wonder if redshirting would exclude him from the 2 yr rule?
if he goes to a JC, he can transfer back to UH after a year since he was a qualifier out of high school. then he’ll have 3 to play 3.
Oh no, I’m starting to think like al….. 😆
i personally don’t like the two year rule. especially since you only have one chance to play college ball.

We need another compliance officer just to help answer all the Tsaiko’s questions. PLUS – the student-athletes need/deserve better support. IMHO 😈 😀
rather than debate his eligibility issue, why not call Tsai and ask him to call Lavea..how simple… 🙂
Garret, thanks for the info on #137. I guess my question is why did Kaluka get a contract proposal before any of the other higher round draftees? Talk about disorganization. Why would the Browns give this crucial duty to an untested person? She could potentially lose football players for the team. You would think they thought of this with all the money involved.
#179…..oops.
…participate for four years regardless of when the fours years occur. this year, five years from now, 18 years from now, etc, etc.
ummm. ralph. st did mention that he was unawares of the wac rules.
oh brew-hahaha.
Re: Browns.
Sounds like she’s a cap-ologist.
The J-E-T-S had one of those. And then the GM became their bean counter.
Trouble with bean counters is they’re not football people. She might get the Browns the best deal, but it could be a while. I think it’s more important to get guys in camp rather than to save a few thousand here and there.
Hmmmmm…. J-E-T-S you say…. 😯 🙄 😈
Dawn Aponte: 🙄
J-E-T-S… Jets, Jets, Jest… 😆
Hey…. you guys ever notice that there’s a little al in Ralph?!! 😯 🙄 😆
Happy Saturday evening, Tsaikos. Happiest birthday wishes to Jodie, Hurley and Tyler on their special days. And congratulations on Wena and ST on their anniversary!
Thank you, Ariel, for the support you’ve provided to the UHAD and its student-athletes.
Hope the Browns and their bright executive will make an offer to Veikune soon.
SailorBlue, Kekoa and Slugger…hope you feel better soon!
Hoohiki,
I agree with your points in #183. I don’t understand why Cleveland wouldn’t even start negotiations with their second round picks until *after* the rookie reporting date had passed. It seems that she is forcing them to become holdouts or to be late to camp because she is so slow.
ST,
I hadn’t looked into Dawn’s background and hadn’t realized she had been with the Jets. It would be interesting if she was the cap-ologist with the Jets when they had a lot of late signings of draft picks. But instead of just recommending things to the GM, now Dawn is in charge of negotiating the contracts directly…and she reportedly wasn’t even answering the calls from the agents of their second round picks.
Fox Sports ranked Miami’s passing attack #29 in the NFL. Fox also seems to completely ignore and disregard Bess.
Jevan Snead was the freshman QB who lost the battle against the freshman Colt McCoy to take over the Texas QB job. He transferred out and now he might be battling Colt McCoy for the Heisman Trophy this year.
Just in case people do not follow UH Athletics on twitter, this was posted today.
Note about how Cleveland has needs at LB mentions Veikune as a potential solution to their needs.

Happy birthday, Jodie Tsai!
Happy birthday to Hurley & Tyler, too.
Happy anniversary, Mr. & Mrs. Tsai!

I just checked the UH website: fb and wvb renewals notices, nothing else, why nothing else..mvb, wbb and mbb needs revenue and better attendance, JD needs to be proactive and start selling tickets sooner than later. checked media online, wbb, old stuff, got e bolla as coach and my browser freezes trying to log off the pfd file.

The US has a shortage of primary care physicians, a problem that will get even bigger as current physicians age…since 1997 US medical school graduates in family medicine and general internal medicine have fallen by nearly 50%. The growing shortage of pediatricians can be attributed to salaries–pediatricians make $171k and orthopedic surgeons make $480k!
