A friend indeed

Ariel Chun, to be sure, mastered the long goodbye.
As president and chief executive officer of the UH Federal Credit Union, she passed out the plaques during UH’s Senior Night ceremonies. Too often, her presentations were preceded by lengthy whisper-whisper conversations with each recipient — a time-consuming process that drew comments from wise-acre blog hosts and television directors tapping their watches.
But teasing aside, Chun stepped up and provided a much-needed service. Chun compensated for UH’s difficult economic situation by providing marvelous plaques at no cost to the athletic department.
Her presentations might have been long, but they were heart-felt. And she provided a face — smiling, sincere and caring — to what could have been an emotionless corporate donation.
In retrospect, she took the time to care.
That’s a rare quality these days.
And, most of all, she’s just a really nice person.
Chun is retiring at the end of this year. We wish her a farewell that is as endearing as the one she provided for hundreds of UH student-athletes.

Word on the street is Idaho defensive tackle Isaiah Lavea, a Kamehameha Schools graduate, is back in the islands.
For good?
Lavea is 6 feet 2 and 298. He sure would fit into the Warriors’ 2010 rotation.

Happy 20th birthday to Jodie Tsai.

Also, birthday wishes to Hurley Chung and Tyler Len.

Colt was first on the list of Redskins players to watch this preseason.

COLT BRENNAN: The second year quarterback from the University of Hawaii will see some serious playing time in the month of August. Last year Brennan’s outstanding performances against the Jets and Colts set the foundation for his ever growing fan base.

If on the football field Colt shines and flashes like the beacons above an emergency vehicle en route to save a life there will be quite a few outcries for #5 to be placed second on the depth chart behind Jason Campbell. A strong preseason will also drive the die hard Colt fans to demand the starting position be given entirely to Brennan. Redskin’s fans won’t be looking for a repeat performance of last preseason by Brennan, but a monumental improvement upon it.

  13. Garret July 25, 2009 4:06 am

Today’s update for David Veikune’s contract situation isn’t good. Veikune’s agent said that the Browns haven’t even given him a contract proposal as of last night…even though rookies were supposed to report yesterday according to the Browns, it is hard to get a deal done if the Browns don’t even make an offer! The person handling contract negotiations for Cleveland is in the first year of her job…maybe that is why she is moving so slowly on this.

Ken Zuckerman, Veikune’s agent, said Friday night he hadn’t received an official offer from the team. Veikune played defensive end for Hawaii but spent offseason practices with the Browns at inside linebacker.

Vice president of football administration Dawn Aponte is handling negotiations for the team. She’s in her first year with the Browns after spending three years working in the NFL office.

I think such an initiative would be met with fierce resistance by the Boyd Gaming Group as well as the rest of the Vegas gaming industry.

While I can also see the pros and cons in doing such a thing, I can also envision a multitude of angles the Vegas gaming industry can take into trying to convince the people and legislators that legalizing could be detrimental to the State. Some of those angles/talking points are rather contradictory to Vegas’s cause, but are notable nonetheless.

    Hoohiki,

The contract delay is NOT the fault of David Veikune or his agent! lava summarized the situation well, Dawn Aponte is *not* getting her job done. She is in her first year with an NFL team and they put her in charge of negotiating contract, and she has been extremely slow about going about it.

If it was *just* Veikune without a contract, maybe you could think that the blame was with him or his agent. However, Cleveland drafted 3 players in the second round and NONE of them have contracts! Even worse, none of them apparently have even gotten a contract offer from Cleveland! Veikune hasn’t rejected any offers from Cleveland…they haven’t made him an offer yet!

Cleveland had their rookie orientation yesterday. As of last night none of their 3 second round picks had contract offers…they cannot agree to a contract if Cleveland’s contracts person isn’t talking to them!

  138. Garret July 25, 2009 12:38 pm

Interesting chart put together by Phil Steele that tries to quantify the experience that each college football team has on their roster. It takes into account the number of Seniors, Juniors, Sophomores and Freshmen, the number of Senior starters, the rest of the seniors in the 2-deep chart, the % of returning offensive yards, the % of total tackles (as a measure of the defense’s experience), and the career starts returning for the OL (a key measure for any team prediction in my opinion). This is a nice way to try to compare the experience of each team in an unbiased way. It isn’t perfect, no stat like this could be, but it is a nice way to compare teams.

With the huge turnover in defense this year, I thought that UH would be really low, so UH’s #82 experience ranking doesn’t surprise me. I actually thought it would be lower. Wisconsin is even lower on the experience rankings, #91. NMSU is #115, not surprising after their coaching change and roster turnover.

La Tech has the 8th most experienced team, another way to say they have almost all of their key people back from their bowl-winning season. SJSU is #16 on the experience rankings which means that Coach Tomey has an experienced team to lead this year. Utah State is at #19 and Washington State is at #23…Washington State’s experience rating surprised me because I thought they had a huge roster turnover.

He played two years at Utah for Urban Meyer and was the cream of Meyer’s 2004 recruiting crop. He transferred to a 1AA school for family reasons, which had a very negative impact on his HFL draft stock. Looks like the Rangers have a swine flu problem, the first team I’ve read being hit this hard. The swine flu is expected to come back in force in the Fall for the flu season…right in time for football. If one player gets it, it could easily spread through a locker room…

Texas Rangers pitcher Vicente Padilla tested positive for swine flu, though his symptoms are subsiding and he’s expected to make his next start.

Padilla was scratched from his start Wednesday against Boston due to flulike symptoms, and lab reports Friday indicated he had H1N1 influenza A. He is thought to be the first athlete in U.S. major pro sports to be diagnosed with swine flu.

Several Rangers players have been hit with the flu this week, including Eddie Guardado, Omar Vizquel and David Murphy. Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia was scratched from Friday night’s game against Kansas City due to the flu.

The team held a meeting Wednesday advising everyone to take necessary hygiene precautions, and the Rangers’ flight to Kansas City was delayed until Friday morning in order to provide additional recovery time. Cultures have been sent away to determine if any other players have swine flu.

“Without speculating, I think it is reasonable to expect that we may find some of our other guys have it,” Levine said. “We’ve been medicating our players. We would use the same medication and the same kind program to rehabilitate them and they’ve all shown improvement. Those are the positive signs.”

The news about Padilla’s illness came on the same day that the San Diego Padres’ Triple-A team postponed a trip to Utah because of a flu outbreak that has affected seven players.

We need another compliance officer just to help answer all the Tsaiko’s questions. PLUS – the student-athletes need/deserve better support. IMHO 😈 😀

  181. Ralph July 25, 2009 5:11 pm

rather than debate his eligibility issue, why not call Tsai and ask him to call Lavea..how simple… 🙂

  182. Hoohiki July 25, 2009 5:34 pm

Garret, thanks for the info on #137. I guess my question is why did Kaluka get a contract proposal before any of the other higher round draftees? Talk about disorganization. Why would the Browns give this crucial duty to an untested person? She could potentially lose football players for the team. You would think they thought of this with all the money involved.

  183. al July 25, 2009 5:50 pm

…participate for four years regardless of when the fours years occur. this year, five years from now, 18 years from now, etc, etc.

    Re: Browns.
    Sounds like she’s a cap-ologist.
The J-E-T-S had one of those. And then the GM became their bean counter.
Trouble with bean counters is they’re not football people. She might get the Browns the best deal, but it could be a while. I think it’s more important to get guys in camp rather than to save a few thousand here and there.

  187. βρεω808 July 25, 2009 6:23 pm

    Hmmmmm…. J-E-T-S you say…. 😯 🙄 😈

    Dawn Aponte: 🙄

…worked for the NFL Management Council and, before that, the New York Jets.

In a statement, General Manager George Kokinis said: “Dawn is an extremely bright executive. She has expertise in many different facets of the NFL, including contract negotiations, salary-cap management, and league labor relations.

“Her unique and valuable experience will be an asset to our front office.”

Aponte spent the past three years in the NFL Management Council office as vice president of labor finance. Before that, she worked for the Jets for nearly 15 years, most recently as the club’s senior director of football administration.

    J-E-T-S… Jets, Jets, Jest… 😆

Happy Saturday evening, Tsaikos. Happiest birthday wishes to Jodie, Hurley and Tyler on their special days. And congratulations on Wena and ST on their anniversary!

Thank you, Ariel, for the support you’ve provided to the UHAD and its student-athletes.

Hope the Browns and their bright executive will make an offer to Veikune soon.

SailorBlue, Kekoa and Slugger…hope you feel better soon!

  190. Garret July 25, 2009 7:00 pm

    Hoohiki,

I agree with your points in #183. I don’t understand why Cleveland wouldn’t even start negotiations with their second round picks until *after* the rookie reporting date had passed. It seems that she is forcing them to become holdouts or to be late to camp because she is so slow.

  191. Garret July 25, 2009 7:03 pm

    ST,

I hadn’t looked into Dawn’s background and hadn’t realized she had been with the Jets. It would be interesting if she was the cap-ologist with the Jets when they had a lot of late signings of draft picks. But instead of just recommending things to the GM, now Dawn is in charge of negotiating the contracts directly…and she reportedly wasn’t even answering the calls from the agents of their second round picks.

  192. Garret July 25, 2009 7:15 pm

Fox Sports ranked Miami’s passing attack #29 in the NFL. Fox also seems to completely ignore and disregard Bess.

The blurb on Miami begins “Somewhere, Mark Clayton and Mark Duper have to be shaking their heads.” It concludes that Ted Ginn Jr. has to have a breakout year for the Dolphins passing game to pose any threat.

No mention is made of Greg Camarillo or rookies Patrick Turner or Brian Hartline, all of whom could play a significant role in upgrading the attack.

Jevan Snead was the freshman QB who lost the battle against the freshman Colt McCoy to take over the Texas QB job. He transferred out and now he might be battling Colt McCoy for the Heisman Trophy this year.

According to last week’s story in the Austin American-Statesman, former Stephenville High and Texas quarterback Jevan Snead, now at Ole Miss, has received some newspapers’ support for the Heisman Trophy.

Florida quarterback Tim Tebow, Texas’ Colt McCoy and OU’s Sam Bradford were the finalists last year, with Bradford winning the Heisman. It was won the year before by Tebow. All three quarterbacks are back this year.

Yet, when the Southeaster Conference’s preseason team recently was released, Tebow was picked at quarterback. But he was not a unanimous selection … someone left him off his ballot.

The story went on to say that Snead was the only other quarterback who could be considered All-SEC, but his coach, Houston Nutt, was not allowed to vote on his player.

  195. Garret July 25, 2009 7:23 pm

Note about how Cleveland has needs at LB mentions Veikune as a potential solution to their needs.

Which brings me back to the linebackers, where they don’t have a star such as Rogers as an anchor. The Browns believe inside linebacker D’Qwell Jackson has Pro Bowl potential, but he’s not arrived yet. Barton is solid with 101 starts in 11 seasons. Since 2001, he played all 16 games every year except 2005, when injuries limited him to four games. Leon Williams is an inside linebacker, but he doesn’t seem to be starter material. It appears Beau Bell is more of a special teams guy. Maybe that’s why the Browns have looked at rookie David Veikune. While he is supposed to be an outside linebacker, the Browns also have played him inside — perhaps a hint they are looking for depth behind Jackson and Barton.

  196. Garret July 25, 2009 7:23 pm

The linebackers worry me because they are so important in the 3-4 scheme. If I’m an opposing offensive coordinator, I respect several of these guys but I don’t fear any of them, as I would Rogers on the line. That will be one of Ryan’s biggest chores — developing Hall, Wimbley, Veikune or someone on the outside into a star and a pass rusher worth worrying about.

Powder Puff ~ I’m as fine as frog hair girl! I no longer see dead people, nor do I talk to myself. Still taking care of my very fragile Papa.

SailorBlue is home recovering from his surgical procedure (What did you do to his boat when you landed on it?).

Slugger had violated the international peace accord we had with the Pacific Slug population. As a result, they imposed a secret strain of slug virus on her.

    Did you play golf today?

  198. Slugger July 25, 2009 8:18 pm

It’s slug bachi. This virus kept me out of the garden for two days; couldn’t destroy slugs.

    Happy birthday, Jodie Tsai!

Happy birthday to Hurley & Tyler, too.

Happy anniversary, Mr. & Mrs. Tsai!

Mahalo to Ariel Chun for providing the support for UH athletes.

Back to being sick on the couch. Esme & out…

I just checked the UH website: fb and wvb renewals notices, nothing else, why nothing else..mvb, wbb and mbb needs revenue and better attendance, JD needs to be proactive and start selling tickets sooner than later. checked media online, wbb, old stuff, got e bolla as coach and my browser freezes trying to log off the pfd file.

The US has a shortage of primary care physicians, a problem that will get even bigger as current physicians age…since 1997 US medical school graduates in family medicine and general internal medicine have fallen by nearly 50%. The growing shortage of pediatricians can be attributed to salaries–pediatricians make $171k and orthopedic surgeons make $480k!
