A field of dreams

You never know who will show up at an unsupervised workout. The most recent mysterious participant is a mean-looking linebacker.
The past few workouts, MLB (Mystery Linebacker) has worked his way into the defensive rotation. Other spectators would agree MLB has all of the tools.
It turns out “that guy” — as he was referred to by several players — is Kaleo Wong, a 2003 Campbell High graduate. He said he spent the past few years living on the Mainland.
Wong is an invited walk-on who has been added to the 105-player training camp roster.

Cornerback Jeramy Bryant has drawn praise for his pass-coverage skills. He’s quick, and aggressive. Bryant is a transfer from L.A. Harbor College.

I think this is going to be a big year for defensive end Elliott Purcell, who will emerge as a top pass-rusher. Purcell had some family commitments that slowed his development at UH. Defensive ends David Veikune and John Fonoti will start. But in UH’s rotation system, Purcell is considered to be a “No. 1 guy,” too.

In yesterday’s “Comments” section, blog reader Marlis correctly pointed out that Kapolei High has an impressive football Web site. A couple of years ago, I went to the site after UH received commitments from two Kapolei players. It was a useful site then, and it is even better now. Here’s the link:

When we stayed on Kauai last year, we tried to find JJ’s Broiler, but could not find the street. Maybe we will be luckier this Saturday.

  18. Pauoa Boy June 23, 2008 7:38 am

Catching up from yesterdays blog…wassup with the UH website. I often take a look to see if any changes on the site is different, but still same ol. Then I clicked on Kapolei’s site and sheesh talk about blow you out of the water. Kind of sad that UH gotta take notes from one high school team. C’mon guys get it together, and then you wonder why get so much pilikia. How you expect to compete with the best if everything going be substandard. Now I realize how much JJ’s leaving was a huge blessing in disguise. As much bitterness as I have for him, I gotta give it to him as he was the guy to make things go. Time to step things up and bring it UH, stop ackin and take akshon!

  19. Stretch June 23, 2008 7:40 am

gigi – if you can’t find the street that JJ’s is on, you can find water if you fell off a boat. It is on the main road going through town.

good morning sir. when you make your rounds at UH today, could you ask Derrick and Ryan to take a quick look at the Kapolei Hurricanes website, pretty please! I begged Kekoa to take point in a earlier post and report to Warrior Nation. What impressed me most about the site was the writeups/photos about the players – the past, the future. maybe if you suggest em it won’t come off so hoeity toeity.

I’ll tell you what I’m thinking about the UH Media guyz. Right now, they’re in defensive mindset. Day tinkin its easy fo blame dem cuz day still here, along wit Carl, on da SB stuff.. But day no need make like dat cuz day got you for a friend. An guyz l ike me going cut dem slack even if we talkin out loud, cuz we/I takin my cues from yu an Whitey an da blog.

  24. Pauoa Boy June 23, 2008 7:46 am

Another LB joining the mix…guess you can never have enough guys who like to seek and destroy!

Good to see more talented DB’s this year, they all have speed and great coverage instincts after watching highlight videos and games. This is one area I always thought UH needed to focus on more with the D. Now with our Fab Front 7, these DB’s, and Safety’s should be making plays all day. I envision a top 25 defense this year fo sure!

Elliot Purcell I’m sure will be wrecking havoc this year. He and Alasi Toilolo seem to have motors that keep going and going, just like Veikune. Good to know we have some speed rushing DE’s to compliment our Giants in the middle.

Any word on Quentin Beaver and how he’s coming along. That guy is just massive I would hate to be on the end of one of his hits.

  25. Loa June 23, 2008 7:56 am

Howzit PB – we get the Jone’s Boys at DE too, ho talk about depth, cannot wait till camp opens

  26. Pauoa Boy June 23, 2008 8:00 am

Everybody need to do their part in making the University of Hawaii a top 25 school! I know it takes lots of time and money, which we don’t really have, but things that can be fixed, need to be fixed. The website is a no brainer, and needs to have more news coverage on the teams updates, etc… I’m sure a student at UH would love to do an intern job, working and reporting about the sports teams on the Website if it takes up to much time, etc… Maybe should hire the guys from the C & K show, to have there insightful, comedic videos on the site. All of the fans are always thirsting for more news about not just football but all the UH sports. Whatever happened to Princess Leila, loved her videos of the football boys, we need her! Anyway, just some thoughts, cause like all of you, I believe in UH and the athletics program and where it should be….Top 25 all the way!

  29. Pauoa Boy June 23, 2008 8:03 am

Howzit Loa – Yups I heard C. J. is a beast too. Bruddah should be another rushing threat after moving over from LB. I know he been beastin on the weights, so I hope he can get into the starting rotation and unleash the fury on some people. Sheesh I too excited already…makes me want to go practice and get on the field too!

  30. Kekoa June 23, 2008 8:05 am

BHF2 ~ I wish I could tell you more about that RH kid from Kapolei, but as you may recall…Pops and I were unceremoniously thrown off their practice field!

However, I did run into a prospect at the Grad partay I attended Sat. night. He told me that it was suggested by the UH staff that he tighten up on his GPA. As a result, he is going to a small college in San Diego. He really would like to come back and play for UH in any capacity on either the Football, Basketball or Volleyball team.

He is 6′ 5″ tall (and still growing!) and weighs a trim 215 lbs. (Needs to pump some iron and still keep that flex). Played tight end at Kalaheo HS, so that was another reason why UH wasn’t too high on him…but…he could be a good recruit for coach Nash, or even Coach Shoji.

I’ll forward his contact numbers and ask Ronnie, Garret, Rainbow Cliff and Pauoa Boy to keep an eye on him. With all that off island supervision & support, he might turn out to be a diamond in the rough!

  31. FloridaTed June 23, 2008 8:05 am

    Morning/afternoon, Tsaiko-Nation and Tsai-Meister.

Man, just love those daily pictures, they have added so much to the blog.

Is there a little “stud forest” nearby? We seem to have all kinds of quality players coming out of the woodworks lately. If we keep this up, we don’t have to recruit anymore, lol.

The depth we have across the D is unreal. Guaranteed we will be top 25, if not top 10. Should our offense achieve 70 % of last years team we will be very dangerous indead.

How is the overall depth of the offense, anybody (Tsai-Meister?) privy to the outlook there?

  32. Pauoa Boy June 23, 2008 8:10 am

Howzit Kekoa, no worries garrans if we see that guy in San Diego easy for pack weight on that kine 6’5″ frame. We’ll be on the lookout.

  33. Pauoa Boy June 23, 2008 8:19 am

Get planny former local prospects who have been slept on. When I was in Arizona, I met planny local boys and polys who play on the JC teams, AWC, NAU, etc… Many who have transferred to big D-1 schools. Also, guys who never got looked at but had the talent to be something special… Ashley Lelie, Chad Owens for example that walked on. Some guys just need more time to develop their games physically and mentally, but there are quite a few out there who can ball.

Just like BHF2 said previously, I rather have a guy who has been slept on that has the hardwork ethic, desire and go all out attitude/ overachiever, than a star player from the beginning. Cause it’s more meaningful when you have a bunch of high character guys like that then a bunch of all-stars with no heart, who just think they good already so not going put forth as much effort. Not saying all are like that, but from experience…it happens.

  34. Kekoa June 23, 2008 8:20 am

  36. Pauoa Boy June 23, 2008 8:34 am

Kekoa – Gotta catch up on the news about KJ, but I heard rumors. I’m sure he’ll get a lot of support as he grew up in the area and once in awhile I’ll see him around a gym. One guy I see alot of is Bill Cartwright (Chicago Bulls C), he lives in the El Dorado Hills area I think, but is always balling it up at his high school alma mater in South Sac area.

Anyway, I forgot Rainbow Cliff lives in that San Diego area, maybe I should ask him were are some good spots to play BBall. Wonder if he still plays too? Anyway, wish I could make it back for the Bash but gotta get the house settled in with the move before I go back working 12-14-16-24 hour days.

We were complaining about UH Athletic’s website on this blog for well over a year…I know that I contacted some people in the Department about things that needed fixing and I’m sure that others did too. Of course, there was someone else in charge of the Athletic Department…and that was just added to the list of things that were ignored under his watch.

Many people have brought up the suggestion that student workers would love to help out the Athletic Program and they work *much* cheaper than full-time web designers.

  39. Garret June 23, 2008 8:45 am

Article about the playoff game where Chad Kapanui’s team lost in a close game. Looks like Chad’s offense did well but special teams cost them the game.

Statistically speaking Saturday night, the Sioux City Bandits dominated the River City Rage.

River City trailed 356-184 in total yardage, but it didn’t matter. The Rage, getting a 19-yard touchdown catch from Virgil Union with 37 seconds left in the game, escaped with a 37-33 win over the Bandits in a first-round United Indoor Football game at the Family Arena.

Union added a 30-yard touchdown reception for River City, which had the ball for 21 minutes and 24 seconds while Sioux City logged 38:36 of possession time.

The difference? Poor special teams play for the Bandits.

David Daniels returned a first-quarter kickoff 52 yards for a touchdown as River City tied the game 7-7. Then, in one of the strangest plays of the season, kicker Chris Hicks failed miserably on a second-quarter field goal attempt, hitting teammate Spetlar Tonga in the back on a low kick.

The ball caromed into the end zone and Joe Bevis, a linebacker who earlier in the week won UIF defensive player of the year honors, pounced onto it for a touchdown that gave the Rage a 21-10 lead.

Sioux City took a 33-30 lead with 53 seconds left in the game when Tommy Hofer recorded his seventh touchdown catch of the season, a 14-yarder from Chad Kapanui, who finished the game completing 16 of 32 passes for 140 yards.

Sioux City, which rallied from the 21-10 deficit to get two second-quarter touchdown runs — Bentley’s 24-yarder and O.J. Simpson’s four-yarder on a fourth-down play — rallied desperately in the closing seconds.

Simpson caught a 10-yard pass at midfield, John Ostermeyer added a catch at the 18 and Simpson then had his 91st reception of the season, hitting the wall at the 10-yard line with 16 seconds left.

Ostermeyer missed a catch halfway to the end zone, then the Bandits were charged with an illegal procedure penalty.

Kapanui’s receivers were all covered by the River City defense on what turned out to be the last play of the game. The 6-2, 250-pounder from the University of Hawaii had no choice but to run and was tackled short of the end zone as time ran out.

  40. Garret June 23, 2008 8:46 am

Looks like Chad Kapanui has one more game. I know that Chad Kalilmoku played at least part of season for Chad Kapanui’s team.

The season hasn’t ended for seven Bandits. Kapanui, Bentley, Simpson, Tonga, center Erv Strohbeen, strong safety Chad Hustedt and defensive lineman Andy Poulosky will play in the UIF All-Star Game at the Tyson Events Center on July 19.

Looks like JJ is bringing 3 SMU alums with him to his golf tournament in Hawaii.

Jones left Dallas this past weekend with four of his current SMU coaches to participate in the 4th Annual June Jones Foundation Celebrity Golf Classic. The event will benefit the Ronald McDonald House and H.U.G.S. It is held annually at Hokuli’a (www.Hokulia.com) on the Big Island, Hawai’i (Island of Hawai’i.

Joining Jones is wide receiver coach Jeff Reinebold, Special Teams coordinator Frank Gansz, running back coach Wes Suan and offensive line coach Dennis McKnight. Former SMU alumni Eric Dickerson, Jerry LeVias and Louie Kelcher will also be in attendance. The event begins today and ends on Tuesday.

“I am proud to have SMU legends like Eric Dickerson, Louie Kelcher and Jerry LeVias joining members of my coaching staff and me in Hawai’i,” said June Jones. “I truly appreciate their participation in our efforts to help those in need.”

The group will stay in Hawaii at the completion of the golf tournament and will attend a press conference for the June Jones American Samoa Football Academy on Thursday. The Academy will be June 26-29 in Pago Pago, American Samoa.

  43. Garret June 23, 2008 8:49 am

This article claims that the BCS has cost college football an incredible amount of money!

It is very easy to talk to a few network TV executives, media buyers, and corporate marketing honchos and figure out how much college football and collegiate athletic programs will leave on the table this year (over $650 MILLION DOLLARS this year alone) and over the next 10 years ($7.0 BILLION PLUS DOLLARS) if the current BCS system stays in place over the revenues of what a 16 team college football playoff would generate. What is a more interesting question, especially in a time when the vast majority of college athletic programs are losing money (With only 19 of 120 I-A athletic programs showing a net profit) and the cost of everything from fuel to college tuition skyrocketing, is how much money has the BCS already cost athletic programs across the United States?

Just how much has the BCS cost college athletic programs in its 10 year history if a 16 team playoff had been instituted in 1997 instead of the BCS? Luckily, we here at Coaches Hot Seat have access to the details of TV contracts for college football’s post-season going back to the early 1990s and all it takes is a little research and a calculator to come up with the following numbers:

Revenue generated by BCS since inception (1998 to 2007): $1.02 Billion Dollars

Revenue that would have been generated by a 16 team playoff (1998 to 2007): $5.85 BILLION DOLLARS

Collegiate athletic department Revenues lost because of the BCS (1998 to 2007): $4.83 BILLION DOLLARS

Great post regarding lost revenues due to the BCS system. I wonder what’s happened with Congressman Neil Abercrombies proposed congressional investigation into the matter. If the figures you shared above are accurate, I can’t see how the NCAA can sit quietly by while everybody BUT the BCS conferences keeps getting ripped off.

garett totally agree with you on using students enrolled at UH. especially if they are enrolled at UH in some graphic arts or web design computer programs. kapolei hs has produced an excellent product. hs student have great imagination and vision. they are given the opportunity in hs to develop their skills. sure there a lots of these types of hs students at UH. they have vast experiences to improve or enhance the UH web site so why not use their talents. and as you pointed it would be cheaper and who knows how much better the UH web site might get. have said many time we (old buggahs) need to step aside and let the youngings do their stuff. if we trained and taught them right we should be proud of what they can do.

UH plays Washington State this year…with their team having such problems now maybe that will help UH end the season really strong. Amazing list of problems with Washington State players–some of the details (like the details of the frying pan incident) are pretty amazing.

In May, the NCAA said WSU failed to meet academic standards in 2006-07 and yanked eight scholarships, among the biggest penalties in the country.

In the past 18 months, at least 25 players have been arrested or charged with offenses that carry possible jail time, court records show. Most were charged with misdemeanors such as underage drinking or possession of marijuana. Thirteen had been arrested or charged before.

This year, one player faced felony charges after hitting a man on the head with a frying pan. Another tried to hurt a teammate by soaking his contact lenses in rubbing alcohol. A third was accused of punching a student, knocking him unconscious and fracturing his cheekbone.

Wulff has two problems, and fixing one could compound the other. If he kicks a wayward player off the team, that could hurt WSU under the NCAA’s academic guidelines — and possibly cost the Cougars another scholarship.

Wulff’s challenges hardly end there. Like all WSU coaches before, he must sell recruits on the merits of isolated Pullman — population 27,030. He must counter the take of Courtney Williams, an ex-defensive back from Los Angeles who left with academic problems.

“WSU is a hard school to go to, man,” Williams says. “You ain’t got nothin’ to do but get drunk and smoke weed, and not go to class because you’re too tired from doing what you’re doing.”

Midway through Doba’s tenure came the class of 2005. It included six of the eight who ran afoul of the NCAA’s new academic standards.

“We just had a bad class, basically,” Doba says.

Some of those eight players took and retook classes, trying to remain eligible. Courtney Williams says he had to take a fine-arts class three times. Defensive tackle Bryan Tarkington says he couldn’t pass an advanced health class he was taking for the second time.

Article about the improvements BSU is making with their stadium. It is sad that BSU could use their BCS money to help expand their stadium (which will generate more money for them in the future) and UH has to use its BCS money to pay off old debts (which will generate nothing and they still will have a large debt).

The most expensive project in the history of Boise State athletics is almost complete. Now comes the hard part – footing the bill.Boise State will borrow $28,250,000 to pay for construction of the Stueckle Sky Club, a project that adds luxury suites, loge boxes, club seats, a modern press box, a well-equipped concourse for the west grandstands, a new ticket office and a souvenir store to the west side of Bronco Stadium.

The total cost could go as high as $37.55 million – $35.9 million for construction and $1.65 million for furnishings, fixtures and equipment. The $9.3 million that wasn’t borrowed came from vigorous fund-raising and more than $2 million generated by the Broncos’ trip to the 2007 Fiesta Bowl.

Boise State plans to pay the debt with lease revenues on the new premium seating. The facility is expected to be sold out for the Aug. 30 football season opener against Idaho State.

In fact, Boise State has lease agreements ranging from three to 15 years for every seat so far in the new facility, according to the athletic department.

The athletic department has sold 35 suites (16 seats each), 44 loge boxes (four seats each) and 636 club seats, at a minimum of $2,200 per seat. Another 100 club seats are filled by lifetime ticket holders moved from the now-defunct University Club and four suites are reserved for the athletic department, the president’s office, visiting dignitaries and a potential Bronco Stadium naming-rights partner.

Boise State has virtually assured the Sky Club will be a short-term success with multi-year leases. All of the $3.285 million in budgeted annual revenue is guaranteed for three years and 63 percent is guaranteed for at least five years.

Thirty-one percent is committed for at least 10 years.

A sellout of the Sky Club would generate $3,285,436 in revenue for 2008. With 67 percent of that amount, the athletic department can cover the debt payment and reserve.

gigi…..since you just moved to hawaii, i will pardon both you and mr. gigi for not knowing about the infamous hamura saimin stand of lihue, kauai.

  62. Garret June 23, 2008 9:57 am

BSU’s Academic side will make over $25 mil from the football stadium upgrade:

However, the Sky Club also will generate money for academics. Pearson inserted a new idea – an annual payment from Sky Club revenues to the academic capital projects fund. The fund was set up specifically for this project and will be used to help offset the Sky Club’s impact on the university’s ability to borrow.

The payment starts at $600,000 per year. It increases by $100,000 every five years to $1.1 million per year from 2033 to 2037.

That’s a total academic contribution of $25.5 million plus interest income – compensation from athletics for using a big chunk of the university’s debt capacity.

“In today’s dollars, that represents another building,” Pearson said.

  63. Garret June 23, 2008 9:58 am

Amazing that Oregon State has NEVER sold about 1100 of its club seats! 1/3 of those high-revenue seats are just empty, which really hurts their Athletic Department’s profitability.

By comparison, Oregon State opened a similar facility in 2005 with all 22 suites and 58 loge boxes sold out, but has never sold about one-third of its 3,300 club seats. The prices are comparable to those at Boise State.

“That’s incredible,” Oregon State assistant athletic director for development Linda Hurd said of Boise State’s seat sales. ” I was by Bronco Stadium in January. It looks like it’s going to be awesome when it’s done.”

Article about why 16 teams would be better than 12 teams for conferences.

    1) A lucrative playoff can be created with little disruption of current postseason.

Four conferences. 16 teams in each. Eight teams in each division. Four conference title games. Four winners advance to national semifinals after New Year’s. One title game, a week later. You would have achieved the playoff by essentially adding only a couple of extra conference title games and a BCS title game. The season would not be significantly extended. The integrity of the regular season is completely preserved. And the remaining bowls would go on as usual. No more computer polls. No more controversy. Win your division and you are in. Don’t win it, and you can go to bowl games like always.

    2) Division play preserves rivalries that are disrupted in a 12-team format but expands television reach.

The WAC failed at 16 teams because it tried the silly quad format of four groups of four teams. Two eight-team divisions works because you operate essentially as two 8-team leagues under one umbrella. You gain television reach over a larger region but enjoy the benefits of tighter geography within division play such as reduced travel in non-revenue sports and greater access for fans. There would be only limited cross-division competition, but enough to create some attractive matchups each year and build interest in the opposite division race. In the new TV world of conference-owned networks, this would be far more lucrative than operating as independent leagues.

Interesting that UCF has to cut $10.9 million next year due to state budget cuts but are still going to increase the Athletic Department budget by 10%. I wonder if UH would get similar support in that type of situation…

As UCF braces to lose as much as $10.9 million next year because of recently ordered state budget cuts, the UCF Athletic Association approved a record budget that increases by 10 percent for 2008-09.

The new $34.8 million budget, used as a guideline for the athletic department’s expenditures and revenue projections for the coming year, has grown more than $25 million since UCF entered the Division I-A football ranks with a $6.9 million budget in 1996. Here are some key questions and answers regarding UCFAA’s latest budget:

  70. FloridaTed June 23, 2008 10:48 am

    Garret,

About your above post of revenue losses to the schools due to the BCS format, I must say that once the schools really look at those numbers, it will be the biggest catalyst for a play-off, much bigger than any negogiatons could accomplish.

  71. Jason June 23, 2008 11:00 am

I was browsing NFL.com, and I found this video on Washington Redskins’ head coach Jim Zorn from his playing days in Seattle. I gotta say, some of those plays remind me of Colt.

    Re-Player Agents

This is a touchy subject. And one that the schools, camps and academies abroad should look into, mainly because where does the NCAA draw the line of player agents sponsoring camps and allowing for their presence at these camps as teachers and instructors. As I continue writing I recall seeing the player agent’s name included on the Sugar Bowl traveling squad. And I was inquisitive to ask if in the scope of the NCAA rules if this is alright for player agents to travel with the team? Or to travel with the current coaches to these Football Academies abroad? And/or do these camps locally?

Purposely I’ve excluded the identity of this person because I give him credit for knowing what the NCAA rules are governing the relationships between the player agent and athletes and the schools. And camps. And disallowing for any wrongful scrutiny of this individual if I’m wrong. Maybe this is a moot point. And I hope it is. But I can’t help but being curious. The word here is curious that’s all, meaning I’m not out to point fingers. Or cast unfounded innuendos.

But I was wondering after reading the rules myself, basically of which I think are really ambiguous, which states basically that the actions of a player agents can’t/shouldn’t benefit the athlete in any means. Then, even though his heart is in the right place by helping out and teaching football to the athletes at these camps I was just wondering if everybody, including the UH compliance people doing the necessary research, agree beforehand that this is alright that his helping out isn’t construed as benefiting the athletes. Yet on the surface it seems that it does. Maybe it’s only myself that thinks it’s wrong that a player agent travels with the team to the Sugar Bowl. And does these camps and combines.

Personally, I think player agents have gotten a bad wrap and they suffer from the public perception of being scrupulous mainly because of the few incidents at USC and past Senate investigations of player agents. And maybe it appears that I’m condemning this person by association with his peers. What rubs me the wrong way, though, is we have a city of bright people both publically and privately, some even at the UH that forever don’t speak up and ask if this or that is wrong. Does having a player agent close to your school football program and the community camps and combines seem sacrilegious to me…I think it does. And furthermore I would love to talk with Bess and Grice-Mullen on how they were influenced into opting for the draft and passing up their senior years.

  75. bonar June 23, 2008 11:52 am

Without having reviewed the provision(s) to which you refer I would guess that in addresssing to what extent an “agent” is prohibited from an activity depends on the relationship between the person and players during a specific event/activity and the capacity in which the “agent” acts in the event/activity.

gigi- I believe JJ stands for Jim Jasper, Jett’s grandfather. His original restaurant was on Hoolako St. in Lihue and their specialty was the garlic-infused slavonic steak.

Jett’s dad (whose name doesn’t start with a J, for some reason 😉 ) is the man in charge now – and they are located in their own shopping center – Anchor Cove in Nawiliwili. Jett and his sister Jori Ann are both great athletes and their mom is a lovely and personable businesswoman in her own right – and a former Mrs. Hawaii!

Ironically, if you fell off the boat turning into the main channel in the harbor, swimming ashore will take you to the back entrance of JJ’s. Great place to watch Warrior football in Nawiliwili. 🙂

I agree with Ronnie. Maybe you should stream it live and I can watch it from Vegas.

I can see it now…watch some, pull the lever….scream…pull the lever again because I didn’t win…scream with laughter. People would never understand. Better not take a chance at getting thrown out of the casino.

Ronnie wants to see everything that she misses when she’s not here.

  167. Stephen Tsai June 23, 2008 5:29 pm

Good point. It could be Brysen Ginlack.

OK, courtesy of Midori7, here are the bowling results. Yes, it’s a bowl list many of us don’t want to make:

ho- ST, you one ringah too, eh? – well, at least in game 1 😆

  172. Kekoa June 23, 2008 5:55 pm

Rob25 ~ Just dusted off my brownie box camera to take some blog bash photos for Ronnie to send by snail mail. After having them developed, she should get them by the time the team takes the field August 30th!

Shootz…dats supah fass arready!…Retro KSB guys sing, Ring, Ring, Kalihi Ring!

  173. gigi-hawaii © June 23, 2008 5:58 pm

Al, actually I took just 3 pieces of poke at the party and did not go back for 2nds. I thought it was pretty good tasting stuff. Hubby said he did not take any poke, cause he is not fond of it.

Too bad the poke ran out and you had to re-order. But there wasn’t much to begin with. Same with the spencer steak.

ST — looks like everyone had fun at the A-Houses’ home. Some of those scores look awesome!

  174. Kekoa June 23, 2008 6:18 pm

Al ~ Eyewitness news accounts from around the globe confirm your suspects. Like I said, we built in the ‘Y’ factor for the blog bash. I’m sure if I check with Jason, the “X” factor is a given, therefore the problem is going to be solved on July 10th.

Have you given much thought to your contribution to the Tsaiko Memoralbilia display? I thought maybe the ‘bull’ of the litter would be named *Tsaiko* and could be the blog mascot. But then, I can imagine your concern over a lawsuit because of him tearing up a mu’u mu’u, or worse…soiling it! Yikes! 😳

    JAMES & GIGI:

Re Gigi’s 3:48 pm post – where are the darned numbas – I have HB 2500 HB1 SD1 CD 1 plus all the accompanying documentation sitting about three feet from me. If you want to bring it, that’s fine with me. I can try to track down the RFP for the contract itself – by the 10th the presumptive winning bid should be announced. Please let me know one way or t’other.

AL: I didn’t pay you $5 since I was gone shortly after 6 pm last Thursday. Do you want me to send you a check. If so, let me know.

  176. MeiLing June 23, 2008 6:38 pm

ST ~ Could you ask the Coach what kind of horse Cabaret is? And how (tall) many hands he is, please. Inquiring minds want to know…. Where is he stabled?

Wow, “that guy” Kaleo is beeg. Who is the muscled back next to Heun? Thanks for the pics, ST!

  177. Maverick June 23, 2008 6:42 pm

Should we refer to Kaleo Wong as “Mr” Wong?

Whew baby, he get the look like he means business.

  178. jm2375 June 23, 2008 6:43 pm

Interesting question posed by the Sports Animals today – UH ends 2008 with record of 11-2. Which 2 losses would you rather have – Florida & OSU or Boise & Fresno?
UH ends up in the Hawaii Bowl either way, but 1st gets UH prestige, while 2nd one gets UH the WAC Championship. I can see both sides, but methinks me rather have the WAC championship and finally stick to Boise on the smurf turf!!

  179. Maverick June 23, 2008 6:47 pm

    JM
Your right – Always go with the conference prestige first. WAC champs two years in a row, when all the media pundits are putting UH on the back burner is called Sweeet revenge.

BTW, We’re gonna still beat Florida.

  180. Jason June 23, 2008 6:52 pm

al: My check is in the mail already. But thank you. Again. Heck, I should treat you. You can pay for the puppies. 😉

So, should I bring a textbook with me? I will bring my linear algebra and differential equations textbooks, in honor of Garret, for whom those topics are dear. 😀

So, Barry and I headed to the Apple Store in Kāhala Mall so that I could pick up a new iPod touch. It’s amazing, Barry is friends with everyone in the store.

Afterwards, we were hungry, and we remembered to go visit Gourmet Express — which so happens to be right across from the Apple Store. If you don’t recall, Stephen posted a lurker bio on Kamehameha Day, where Chad mentioned his parents own Gourmet Express and The Panini Grill. (It’s too bad Chad wasn’t here, but he’s on vacation right now.) Barry and I both ordered Thai chicken plates, which contained two generous slabs of chicken topped with a peanut sauce, two huge scoops of brown rice, and our choice of two different types of salad. And they have a large variety of salads, from your typical green salad to a Greek fruit salad to different pasta salads. The food there was excellent, and when we couldn’t find an open table, Chad’s younger brother pointed out that we could sit at The Panini Grill’s counter. If you’re in Kāhala Mall, be sure to stop by and try this place. We got a 10% discount, and they still gave us a LOT of food — so much that I couldn’t finish it all. I think I’m going to go there every time I’m in Kāhala Mall now.

  181. gigi-hawaii © June 23, 2008 6:53 pm

JAMES, it’s your call. Do you want to accept Doc’s offer? Actually, I was just thinking of 1 page — the one showing the numbers for the athletic dept.

BTW, Koakane, are you gonna have a label for each item submitted? Just so the display makes sense!

  182. Jason June 23, 2008 6:56 pm

I could take the two conference road wins. Wins at Florida and Oregon State early wouldn’t do us any good in the rankings if we lose to the top two teams in the conference.

  183. gigi-hawaii © June 23, 2008 7:01 pm

I agree. Winning the WAC championship 2 years in a row would be awesome and would send a big message to all those naysayers!

  184. Jason June 23, 2008 7:12 pm

Er, I meant that I WOULD take the two conference road wins, not could.

The article concerning the money lost because there is no football playoff misses the point of why the BCS was setup in the first place. They don’t want to share the MONEY. A playoff system will involve the NCAA and spread the money to more conferences. Even though there might be more money to be made by all, the BCS schools could see less revenue. Nice idea but it won’t happen.

  194. Kekoa June 23, 2008 9:02 pm

Pauoa Boy ~ ‘Gio’ should be in San Diego early September, I’ll check with his Aunty Olivia for exact date ’cause she’s so wanting him to return home to UH and PLAY BALL!

Then add insult to injury by unleashing our new media guide with direct quotes from those idiots all over the splash page. 😈

  199. lakerj32 June 23, 2008 9:23 pm

    Aloha tsaikos

OMG! Why is my score up for bowling…yuck..

Stretch – Im an LA fan for everything…even the crappy Kings. Yep, I live in dark times right now for almost every sport.

Midori7- trade rumors for lakers: Jefferson for Odom, Marion for Odom. trading for or signing Artest. All speculation. Nothing concrete. Probably not happening.

  200. Kekoa June 23, 2008 9:24 pm

J ~ Kinda pricey for one Pogo Stick, yeah?…I just continue using my pinky!

  201. Pauoa Boy June 23, 2008 9:27 pm

Kekoa – No problem, he can come lift with me get Gold’s Gym, 24 Hour Fitness, etc… He going out for Football or what sport?

jm2375 – Yup it’s nuts up here, the sky is grey with all the smoke. Stayed inside today cause the air is not good for breathe, very dirty.

  202. Pauoa Boy June 23, 2008 9:31 pm

Depending on what sport and position he going for is what determine the workout regimen.

  203. Kekoa June 23, 2008 9:32 pm

Liz ~ Got the info you needed…check your email.

Wow! feel the buzz generated from the blog bash RSVP mail to Stretch is cutting down all the trees left on da Ewa Plains…try wait…ack!…Homey said was gone already!

  204. Pauoa Boy June 23, 2008 9:36 pm

lakerj32 – where you heard that from? Which Jefferson, RJ I’m assuming? Kobe wants Ron Artest to join him in LA if I remember correctly. No way Miami gives up Marion. I don’t see it happening with either of the speculated trade talks though.

  205. Kekoa June 23, 2008 9:40 pm

PB ~ Gio says Football, but my gut feeing leans toward Basketball for some reason. Maybe because he has that smooth gait like a bb player. I dunno, you could prolly gauge better once you run him thru some grass drills. Maybe after a shoot around, or some spiking drills on the new BB/VB court Rainbow Cliff built…With his height he might make a great middle blocker for Coach Shoji.

  206. Jason June 23, 2008 9:43 pm

Last year, the big rumor was Jermaine O’Neal for Odom and Bynum, and as a Pacer fan, I was adamant against that. Yikes, I regret that the trade didn’t happen. Now, the rumor around JO is him for T.J. Ford, a draft pick (#17?), and some other guy. Hmm…

Meanwhile, Mike is gloating over his Celtics — even in the newspaper. Check out today’s article.

  207. jm2375 June 23, 2008 9:44 pm

uh, Kekoa, that would be Coach *Wilton* 🙂

  212. gigi-hawaii © June 23, 2008 9:52 pm

Ah, Mike is a reporter after my own heart! He waxes poetic over the Celtics — better than I.

Too bad he didn’t have a $1,000 bet riding on their victory!

  213. Pauoa Boy June 23, 2008 9:55 pm

Jason – Pacer fan? Don’t worry I guarantee you the Celtics will not win another championship next year, yup I said it!

  214. gigi-hawaii © June 23, 2008 9:55 pm

So Mike is 40 years old this year? Just doing the math re his graduating from high school when the Celtics won back in the 80s.

  215. Tita K June 23, 2008 9:56 pm

Okay, where are those original photos of “that guy” Kaleo, AKA Mr Wong? Da Linebackah?

  216. lakerj32 June 23, 2008 9:56 pm

Pauoa Boy- Yep, RJ..but I dont think its happening. Actually a Marion trade could happen. They are having problems with signing Marion and you know Marion wants to come to LA. I like Artest. He’s insane. LA needs a thug. lol. They needed someone to get in Pierce’s head. Anyway, a LOT of people from Boston told me they hated Paul Pierce just two years ago. Funny how winning a championship changes things.

  217. chawan_cut June 23, 2008 10:04 pm

    Stephen, midori7

Who do I pay to get my name off that list????

oh wait. nvm, no more controversies. i don’t have money to be sued by the ’tiser….

  218. Pauoa Boy June 23, 2008 10:09 pm

lakerj32 – Yes it is funny, cause I know a lot of bandwagoners who jumped on that Celtic train this year. I don’t like Paul Pierce either and remember watching UH kick KU’s @ss back when A.C., Alika, and the Helicopter Erin Galloway jumped about 5 feet in the air and swatted that KU 7 footer. Anyway, I love Marion and don’t think Miami will give him up too soon. Gotta involve some big names for that to happen. RJ is New Jersey Nets so I doubt he’s going anywhere I would think VC is gone before him. I see Artest all the time here in Sacramento with his fam. I don’t care too much for him as a person cause he does carry that thug persona even in person. I mean he thought he was 2PAC trying to make a rap album. I do like his physical play though and someone who goes all out on the court. He would probably compliment Kobe better than RJ or Marion…but 2 thugs don’t make a right…

  219. Pauoa Boy June 23, 2008 10:19 pm

    thanks

  231. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc June 24, 2008 12:17 am

Hmmm – just be thankful that a certain Tsaiko’s right shoulder took most of the hit last August because many of the bowling scores above used to be that Tsaiko’s four-frame average – give or take a pin or two.

These days will keep everyone’s scores for fuud.

On a more sober note, a quick reminder that bowling alleys are an endangered species here on O`ahu.

No worry Doc, we got access to the military alleys. They are in much better financial positons. Plus, they are here to stay. Never mind the scores, no price tag on the fun…it’s priceless!

    >>So Mike is 40 years old this year? Just doing the math re his graduating from high school when the Celtics won back in the 80s.

Gigi, leave the math to Jason. But, yes, you’re right. I hit 4-0 next month. (My knees are 65.)

Jason: Kevin McHale showed his Celtic loyalty by delivering KG for Big Al and a box of Twix. Time for Bird to step up with a J.O. for, oh, Brian Scalabrine trade…

here’s Gainesville Sun’s take on Florida and Hawaii

Top 25 Teams and Games — No. 7 Florida Gators

    By Pat Dooley
    Sun sports writer

The buzz: There are a lot of pre-season magazines in love with the mighty Gators this summer, based in part on the fact that the Gators return the Heisman Trophy winner. Urban Meyer has stacked three top recruiting classes on top of each other which should mean better depth for the Gators.

Difference-maker: Tim Tebow was amazing last year and may not come up with the same stats as he did a year ago. But he is still the straw that stirs the drink, a physical and emotional leader who can beat you with his arm, his legs and his will.

The upside: If Percy Harvin is healthy, Florida looks unstoppable on offense. The Gators have an outstanding offense line, the best quarterback in the game and a plethora of skill players with speed. Add in kick returner Brandon James and there shouldn’t be a more potent attack this season.

The downside: When you are counting on a true freshman defensive tackle to make the difference on defense, you have problems. Omar Hunter may be good, but he can’t cover anybody and the secondary has to get better. Florida will be young again and this is still a unit that was torched by Michigan and Georgia last year.

Schedule factor: It’s not easy but not quite the gauntlet the Gators faced in 2006. Miami is still a year away and Hawaii lost its coach and quarterback. The Gators trade Auburn for Arkansas as the rotating SEC game. The Georgia game likely will be the one that matters most.

Mahalo for the finds of all these new guys.
Did Kaleo go to Menlo College?
I see he played at Campbell with David Veikune but is a year older.
How many years would he have to play?
Dude looks like a MMA fighter…

on a side note, I think Leatiagaga is also going to be a key reserve at DE… 🙂
