Leaheys end their radio show

The Leahey and Leahey radio show on KUMU-1500 AM — starring Jim Leahey and Kanoa Leahey — apparently has ended. Their last show was last week Friday.
“They’re definitely done for now,” general manager John Aeto said. “We were honored to have them as part of the show.”
The morning show aired Mondays and Fridays.
Aeto said the Dan Patrick Show will air live this Monday.
Aeto said Bob Hogue will replace Rob DeMelllo on the Tuesday and Thursday morning shows. DeMello cited family reasons in leaving the Rob and Russ Show.

He’s baaack. With a thwack!
Cory Daniel, a former MMA fighter and Castle High TKO linebacker, is enrolled at UH-Manoa and prepared to join the Warriors for training camp. He spent the past couple of years at Arizona’s Pima Community College, where he earned an associate degree.
Daniel took a break to talk story with the Warrior Beat.
Weighty question first.
“When I came back, I was up to almost 270. Now I’m back to the high 240s. I’m trying to peak it out. I don’t want to come out too light. At camp time, I can lose whatever I have to lose. Hopefully, I can play at 235, 240.”
The Knight life.
“It was good fun. We had a good (senior) year. We had a chance to play against Saint Louis (in the championship). We could have won, but it didn’t go that way. We gave the crowd a show, at least.”
Fight club.
“My grandpa was into martial arts. We always grew up playing sports, fighting. (MMA fighter and former Warrior) Falaniko Vitale is a good friend of mine. I always cross-trained with him — football and fighting. As soon as I found out I couldn’t play (Division I football as a freshman) because of academics, I went off to MMA.”
The science of martial arts.
“Not too much bodybuilding. I did a lot of rounds, a lot of sparring. I did boxing training. I did Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, kick-boxing and boxing. It was good. Sometimes we’d go up there and train with B.J. Penn.”
His first love …
“I missed football. After high school, I really wanted to play for June Jones. My school work and my SAT scores killed me. To me, football is my dream, and my passion. After high school, I went to Windward Community College. It was really dead. My dream was far and distant. Typical local boy, playing too much in the ocean and running around chasing girls. I’m getting too old for that.”
His current love …
“My girlfriend is up in Arizona. She goes to U of A. She’s smart. She’s Haole-Filipino. Her dad is Irish. He’s a redhead with freckles. Her mom is pure Filipino. Her dad is an engineer. He works for NASA. He builds bombs for Honeywell (Aerospace). When I talk to him I have no idea what he’s talking about.”
His long-time love …
“I love local food. My brother is the best cook. I love Eggs Benedict and prime rib. I like it cooked medium, a little Ajou’s sauce and horseradish. That’s all you need.”

    Homey,
I read yesterday you were asking what kind of mind folks think you have?

As Mrs. C would say, “I Know, I Know”

Waverider, you got one thing on your mind..
Waverider, you got one thing on your mind..

You get up in the morning You get up in the morning
You shake the sand from your feet
    Dreaming about blue water
You toss and turn all the while you sleep

Waverider, you got one thing on your mind..
Waverider, you got one thing on your mind..

You got one thing on your mind now
Well all through the day well all through the night
You just waxin up your gun now
You headed for that Makaha ride

    Waverider — Butch Helemano

  21. Garret July 17, 2009 4:41 am

A rookie CB with Miami was asked about facing Bess in practice.

Q: What have you learned from facing speedy receivers such as Ted Ginn Jr. and Davone Bess in practice?
A: With Ginn, he can just flat-out run, and you have to be able to run with him. Bess, he’s more of a quick receiver, so you need to change directions with him. They have helped challenge me in different ways.

  22. Garret July 17, 2009 4:43 am

Utah is looking for new streams of revenue, and sideline passes will bring in a fair amount of money for them.

The Crimson Club is offering 12 sideline passes to fans for each home game at the cost of $500. The package includes the sideline passes, a tour, food and drinks and VIP parking.

With minimal expense surrounding the program, the university stands to make close to $36,000 off the program, a nice piece of revenue in today’s cash-strapped economy. The money would go into the scholarship fund which covers the cost of in-state scholarships ($12,500) and out-of-state scholarships ($17,500).

“We’re not immune from the current financial situations and we have to be creative in terms of finding ways to raise money,” he said. “If it works effectively, we’ll keep it going forward.”

Lassiter said applicants must be 16-years-of-age and must undergo a screening process. The program received the blessing of coach Kyle Whittingham.

  23. mctruck July 17, 2009 4:46 am

boy-o-boy!!!!!, it’s starting to get pretty confusin keeping tract of the goings-n-comings of players??

Garret probably mentioned this earlier, but I’m just reading in my morning paper,(dallas morning news), that former Texas Tech QB, Graham Harrell will join the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL, which already has three qb’s on their team, hmmmm???
Harrell was the NCAA division l career leader in TD passes but was not drafted by the NFL. His workout with the Cleveland Browns did not result in a contract.
(Harrell had to fight the perception that his numbers were the product of Texas Tech’s offensive system and that he didn’t have the arm strength to succeed in the NFL).>sounds ala Timmy Changish, don’t it??..alas, the similar route as well.

  24. Ronnie July 17, 2009 5:02 am

    Happy Aloha Friday!

I can’t wait until football season starts!

  25. Kekoa (iPhone) July 17, 2009 5:06 am

    Garret
Sideline passes are built in to the Na Koa ticket program for those with the high price packages. However, additional funds could be raised by offering a select group of season ticket holders a chance to bid on a dozen passes.

  26. mana alohi July 17, 2009 5:13 am

Hey Cory, did you enjoy dinners prepared by your girlfriend’s mom that included corned beef and cabbage with a side of kare-kare? My boys are haole-pinoy also and that’s what was for dinner at least once a month.

  27. Kekoa July 17, 2009 5:20 am

    Hiya Ronnie!

    Aloha Socal Friday!
Keep that bullseye dart kit sharpened for a return match. I’m coming out of retirement!

additional funds could be raised by offering a select group of season ticket holders a chance to bid on a dozen passes.

    Kekoa,

I think that could be a way to raise a little more money for the UH Athletic Department…

  29. Stretch July 17, 2009 5:25 am

    good morning tsaikos!!

it’s good to see the desire to play football again for Cory has made his schooling a priority.

garret & kekoa – to get sideline passes for one UH game, the minimum donation is $600 to Na Koa. this year would be a good year to have something like that since the home schedule is pretty good. my preference this year was Fresno, Boise then Navy.

I remember a few years back that they were trying to limit the people on the sidelines since it was getting out of control. not sure how many more people they would allow down there.

  30. Kekoa July 17, 2009 5:34 am

    Mornin’ Stretch ~

Yes, I agree. The sidelines are getting a little crowded now with other ‘selected’ individuals down there.

SailorBlue is a happy camper after he donated a boat load of treasure chest coins to Na Koa. You know he will enjoy prowling the sidelines with his Alma Mater in da house!

  31. Kekoa July 17, 2009 5:38 am

Sorry about the blue flu…got carried away about my favorite subject…Football, up front and personal!

  32. Ronnie July 17, 2009 5:51 am

Good Morning Kekoa, Stretch, Garret, mctruck, and mana alohi.

I’m still trying to get my dad to use my season tickets to go to the Boise game…. He says he would rather watch it on tv, but I told him to DVR it and see it live. My mom would go, but my dad is a little stubborn (hmmm…. that must be where I get it from 😉 )

  33. d1島 July 17, 2009 6:14 am

Good luck to Cory Daniel. Keep the dream alive.

Lametrius Davis looks like he could turn quick slants into quick “outtaheas” with his physicality.

  40. SailorBlue July 17, 2009 7:44 am

Kekoa, I would certainly enjoy sailing the sidelines during the Navy game. Do you think I would get beat up for wearing Navy blue on the Bows side? I could probably find a ‘boatload’ of chocolate pirate coins – would that suffice?

    Bwahahahaaa…

mctruck….the swinging door, that is the football roster goes through this “coming and going” stuff every year.

some years more than others. many will seek what may be a better fit for them. wish them luck.

i think that through this blog, the host is able to “publicize” those transfers and exchanges on a regular basis. that is one of the greatest things about the warrior beat is that we can get info every day.

  44. J-Dog July 17, 2009 8:07 am

I believe it was also mentioned that Cory Daniel has brothers that want to play for UH as well? What’s the chances of that happening?

  45. Kazz (blkberry_storm) July 17, 2009 8:10 am

Congrats to former Rainbow Wahine Stacey Porter who drove in all of Australia’s runs in a 5-2 upset of the 2008 Olympic gold medalist Japan in the World Cup of Softball!!!!!

  46. lakesidegt July 17, 2009 8:11 am

    BC Lions update. BC won.

But the receiver from San Jose State (Rufus Skillern) that played instead of Grice-Mullen looks like he had a pretty good game last night with two catches for 55 yards. One long catch for 46 yards.

  47. Dennis Halloran July 17, 2009 8:35 am

Big Wave, 54 years ago today I was working as a busboy in Disneyland, setting up tables for Walt Disney, Fess Parker, Eddie Fisher, Liz Taylor and the likes. On July 15, I was a bar back for Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis on the Riverboat, one of the only times in the early years that booze was in the Park

  48. Stephen Tsai July 17, 2009 8:41 am

    I miss names like “Fess.”

  49. Dirty Commish July 17, 2009 8:41 am

Excited to see what Cory Daniel can do for the Warriors. MMA fighter? Means he can give out dirty lickings (looking at YOU Kaepernick!!!). Also means he should have super human conditioning and can be running around all day looking for his next victim.

Late post for Zach Masch but I read about how he likes his eggs running all over the rice… mmmmmmmmmm… and wondered if he has yet to discover the pure joy that is the loco moco. Haven’t had one in ages…

  50. Stephen Tsai July 17, 2009 9:04 am

Masch is fortunate. He met someone who is letting him stay at a place for a reasonable rate.
I didn’t know this until a couple of days ago, but you only receive a scholarship for the summer session in which you’re enrolled. Because the second session runs into training camp, most are encouraged to take the first session. But that leaves about a three-week break before camp in which a player is on his own to pay for food, lodging, expenses. That’s why most Mainland players choose to return home during the break.
That’s not an ideal situation. If, say, you’re training for a fight, you want to be peaking entering training camp. But because of financial considerations, most have to train on their own in the three weeks leading to camp.

  51. Stephen Tsai July 17, 2009 9:05 am

By the way, Cory Daniel and Tim Brown are projected to compete at weakside linebacker.

  52. Slugger July 17, 2009 9:09 am

    Dirty Commish,

Off topic breakfast info: At KCC Farmer’s Market (tomorrow at the Bishop Museum for most vendors), North Shore Cattle Company makes a loco moco with an all beef 1/4 lb. patty that is local beef, very little fat, solid meat. I keep hoping it’s less saturated fat since the meat is leaner.

    K, off to look for slugs….Esme & out…..

  53. Dirty Commish July 17, 2009 9:23 am

Oh, a reason to drag myself out of bed early Saturday! I’ll make a note to check it out. Mmmmmmmm… I go Loco for Loco Moco.

  54. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc July 17, 2009 9:23 am

Jim Donovan will be announcing shortly that August 15 has been set aside for a community service project around the Athletic Department. He thinks that they’re ready to handle as many as 100 community volunteers along with student athletics in most sports.

Perhaps there should be a T-Team set up.

Re yesterday’s Stadium Authority meeting: as reported yesterday, Centerplate was awarded the contract, but there were some very unhappy folks when the announcement was made. The Stadium Authority went into Executive Session almost immediately after convening and stayed behind closed doors for about an hour.

The Stadium management is also FINALLY getting around to entering into discussions with both food vendors as well as others about setting up recycling bins both inside the Stadium and in the parking lot even though the state law went into effect on January 1, 2005.

Back to work – have a great day everyone.

Seems to be a few going to dentists.

I use this simple step-by-step book, “Dentistry Made Simple: Polishing to Root-Canals” — on others.

Commons household tools like pliers, hammer, screwdriver set, soldering iron and solder, variable speed drill, and a decent drill bit set are all you will need. Oh, and some sharp pointy probes (a chisel set works) to get under the gumline, too!

  64. LizKauai (iPhone) July 17, 2009 10:06 am

Hmmm. Maybe wafan missed his calling. Watchout!

Ok. Time to haul the CPU back and see if anything is left.

  71. Cory Daniel July 17, 2009 11:09 am

    aloha everyone
just wanted to stop by and say thanks to everyone supporting me and brother, but most of all supporting the football program. having people or critics good or bad keeps my drive alive and also moments seeing younger kids getting a kick out of seeing the college athletes which makes them train harder and thats why i want to stay back in the islands and making it exciting this year for all of you. Again i want to thank all of you guys supporting us and special thanks to Mel Delaura,my training partner Lyle Nicely and last but not least my girlfriend Elena getting through school.

  72. Dirty Commish July 17, 2009 11:11 am

    Re: Sideline Passes

I had the awesome privilege of being on the sidelines last season. When my friend and I went to the will call window the girl asked if we were on the visitor’s side.

Why the heck would we be on the visiting team’s side? Then I noticed my friend had a gray shirt and blue jacket & cap on. We were playing Nevada.

And I remember the final drive when I thought they were just gonna set up for a Dan Kelly kick but instead threw for the TD and we were right there. My exact words: “NO NO NO NO NO NO WHAT ARE YOU DOINGYES YES YES YES YES YES YES WOOOOO!!!”

With the exception of that, being on the sidelines isn’t the best vantage point to watch a game but it was still a great experience.

I still believe that children should not be allowed there, however. Lots of colorful language and neglectful parents who would let their child get run over by the K5VE truck.

  73. Ronnie July 17, 2009 11:19 am

Cory ~ Thanks for stopping by. We can’t wait to watch you compete as a Warrior.

Thanks for stopping by Cory Daniel and good luck to your brothers as well.

  77. d1島 July 17, 2009 11:38 am

Aside from being able to hear some of the comments on the sidelines, I never preferred that POV over sitting in the stands.
I admire those like the Former Coach who are able to “see” things develop from field level as I have a hard enough time doing that from 30+ rows high.

  78. Slugger July 17, 2009 11:46 am

    Thanks for stopping by, Cory!

    GO WARRIORS!

Response to last night’s late blog post:

Ok…mebbe a little dangerous when an irate punter has a punt blocked and comes back to the sidelines throwing his helmet like it was a 98 MPH fastball. Had to remind that boy, eh! Aunty Liz is sitting ovah heah! (I was behind her!)

Hey you get to sit and talk story with the Rainbow Dancers at half time…jaw a little bit with Willi ‘K’ and best of all, you get to watch the intensity of coach Mac at his best!

    Go Warriors!

  85. Rob25 July 17, 2009 12:21 pm

    Hey Coloma!

    How are you, girl?

Why are you hiding from us these days?

I used to say that from the yellow when CB15 was playing. He looked like he was throwing long bombs to no one but by the time the ball was chest-high, a dread would appear out of nowhere, snatch it with his hands in full stride and keep on going.

Those will always be the great old days for me!

Re the donations in honor of Dave Shoji’s 1,000th win:

We’ll be recycling once again during the home T-Gates this fall and will be splitting the HI-5 refunds three ways. Allan Inaba’s after-school program at Dole Middle School; Doris Sullivan’s PIAA, and Koa Anuenue’s scholarship program. We were planning to ask Stephen to draw the winner for the seventh game.

Since each game generates about $25 in HI-5 refunds including some cans & bottles brought from home, this would be a great way to quickly raise money without too much of an impact on your wallets.

However, for this good cause, let’s switch things abound and put the scholarship program first and see if we can raise most of the money at the first game. You can either bring your donations to the September 4 game OR we can pick them up at your home or business. For example, Curveball has I think seven sacks waiting to be picked up.

For folks who cannot afford to donate $100 all by themselves, this will be a great way to do so collectively. The donation would be made in the name of the Tsai-kos.

Will work out the details after Stephen posts the final instructions.

Understand & sympathize with folks going through dental traumas. Been there before and will be there again as soon as I make the followup appointment. .

  155. Colomaohana July 17, 2009 2:54 pm

Rob: THAT is a good one!

  156. JaM July 17, 2009 2:58 pm

Am I too late to say I’m in?

  157. Rob25 July 17, 2009 3:02 pm

Coloma: It’s Friday and I BELIEVE that it’s time to come alive again. Although I do have to get up early to meet some “twins.”

  158. Rob25 July 17, 2009 3:02 pm

    JaM: You are always “in”

  159. LizKauai (iPhone) July 17, 2009 3:03 pm

W-Doc. Mahalo to you and Dr. Doc for putting your good ideas into practice. I don’t consume much stuff that comes in cans or bottles but we always look for your portable recycler every T-Gate. I remember lines of bottles and cans around the perimeter one time when you weren’t there. We are all pretty trained now !

    Tommui- nice to see you!

Oldie- mahalo for donating the cool prizes!

  160. Stephen Tsai July 17, 2009 3:05 pm

It’s not too late, but it is kind of unnecessary. Everybody is entered.
    Well, except for Cory Daniel.

  161. JaM July 17, 2009 3:07 pm

A-joe has one helluva voice for radio…or projecting, conversing, whatevers.

Stretch has a big mouth too.

Pride surely has a silky smooth voice….smooth as a….well you know where that is going!

Just food for thought…oh and there are a few females around here that could make for an interesting show too. (Put your hand down Liz, there will be a jun ken po contest for any shows that have Colt as the guest)

  165. Colomaohana July 17, 2009 3:15 pm

Got him back for you JJ!!

  167. midori7 July 17, 2009 3:17 pm

ah man, no more Leahey & Leahey. wondered why they weren’t on this morning. Really enjoyed listening to them on Mondays & Fridays. Now if I can only remember to catch their tv show on Weds…

Plus Rob DeMello’s gone from Tues & Thurs shows.

Back to cds for the morning commute, bummer.

  168. Garret July 17, 2009 3:18 pm

Sad to hear about the Leahey and Leahey ending. I was always happy to get to listen to it when I was lucky enough to be driving around while in Hawaii when their show was on. The syndicated stuff cuts out the production costs and is much cheaper, but it really loses the focus on local topics. And from what I heard on the L&L show, their show was much funnier than Dan Patrick’s show.

Things sure have also changed for the newspaper industry. The NY Times bought the Boston Globe for $1.1 billion in 1993…and now that they need to sell the Boston Globe to cut their operating losses, they might need to *pay* someone to take the Globe from them!

Talk about selling high and buying low: The Taylor family sold the Boston Globe to the NY Times for $1.1 billion, and now the NY Times might pay them $40 million to take it back!

  169. Garret July 17, 2009 3:29 pm

For ST: Paula Abdul’s manager says that she will lead American Idol if the “rude” producers don’t give her a new contract soon.

Paula Abdul is unhappy. And unless the producers of “American Idol” change her frown to a smile soon, she’ll dance like there’s no tomorrow away from TV’s No. 1 show.

“Very sadly, it does not appear that she’s going to be back on ‘Idol,’ ” David Sonenberg, Abdul’s manager, told The Times when contacted about the judge’s contract negotiations.

With auditions for the ninth season due to start Aug. 6, Sonenberg says he doesn’t even have a proposal for a new contract from FremantleMedia and 19 Entertainment, the production companies behind the show. The new season is scheduled to premiere in January.

When TV stars (or their reps) air contract-renewal gripes in the media, it’s often a sign that negotiations are entering a more active phase. Abdul — whose tearful, tongue-tied feedback to contestants have made her a kind of batty sister figure to star “Idol” judge Simon Cowell — may have special reasons to want to push the ball forward now, given that “Idol” host Ryan Seacrest just signed a deal worth a reported $45 million that will keep him on the job for at least the next three years. That pact effectively doubled Seacrest’s salary.

Meanwhile, Cowell has a contract that expires next year and is jockeying for his own rich new payday. Published reports have floated a mind-blowing figure of $144 million, which Cowell has scoffed at, saying that talks are ongoing. (Fellow judge Randy Jackson is booked through 2011.)

  170. Garret July 17, 2009 3:30 pm

Paula’s contract running out may be the reason why Idol added a 4th judge last year…it sure doesn’t hurt their negotiating position to have 2 judges for 1 spot (it was reported they wanted to go back to 3 judges next season)

But the situation is more complicated for Abdul. Last season, the producers added a fourth judge, Kara DioGuardi. Producers have not announced a deal with DioGuardi either, but the speculation is that her presence at the judging table may have been a shrewd move to tamp down any outsize contract demands that Abdul and her team might make. For their parts, both DioGuardi and Abdul have said recently that they want to return to the show.

  184. oldie July 17, 2009 5:01 pm

    Congrats to Colomaohana and SteveM!

I’m glad the Wai family (Faye and PL) was able to get one. Especially pleased that Colt wanted one for himself. I guess that means he’s not upset with me making them.

Thanks, ST, for enhancing the cards by having Colt autograph them.

    Garret,

Thanks for the kind thoughts, I don’t do as much as other Tsaikos (such as yourself). We all contribute in our own ways. It doesn’t cost much but keeps me out of trouble.

I would have made more, but I didn’t want to upset the powers that be. As ST says, there may be copyright issues.

  189. Piper's Son July 17, 2009 5:31 pm

    OLDIE:

As ST says, there may be copyright issues.

You realize of course that tommui has the name “Tsai-kos” registered with the Bureau of Conveyances in his name – at least until Stretch gets some organization going so that the name can be transferred.

Now about those cards … (ho ho ho! – pun intended)

    Piper’s Son,

Peggy and I haven’t figured out who you are. Do you have any relationship to Punahou’s Piper’s Pali?

By the way, Tom Mui and his wife Lois gave Peggy her first real job. We’ve always been thankful for that.

Just a final reminder to folks who are wanting to catch up with the Bulla ohana at the breakfast cc in the morning.

We are out at Nancy’s Kitchen in the Waipio Gentry Shopping Center.

Come out for a delicious local style Paniolo breakfast with every imaginable dish available for your picky palate.

The Beast will be there to meet and greet ‘his’ people. Ryan is becoming one of the key players on the Weber State football club. His leadership is being tapped to welcome the new recruits on to the squad. Come hear what he has to say about his college football experience.

(See Post # 68 above for the details)

  196. Martyn price action July 17, 2009 6:41 pm

Very well said. I hope you had a wonderful dinner to celebrate your big day. You bring up such an important point about making new friends at our age.

  197. Bulla July 17, 2009 7:13 pm

    al
stop making trouble sensei…haha, just in a euphoric mood, the beast comes home….can’t wait to see how this off season training has sculptured him.

now the true test comes when he starts doing daddy’s ‘cross training’ program that is nothing short of barbaric. when a few linemen from UH saw the routine/program, they said that was worse than going into a marine boot camp.

basically it’s a ‘go til you blow’ workout, and we’re not talking playing the clarinet or any other woodwind instrument. this is a very taxing, very exhausting, very soul searching routine. it produces the results you want, but you pay the price.

also, i know of a UH player who is going to WOW everyone at Fall Camp; currently he is training with NFL players and has already lost a ‘considerable’ amount of weight in 9 days…..speed + power…..kills. and that’s all i’ll say about that….

mahalo kekoa for arranging the bfast tomorrow, not only will the beast be there, but the princess Isabella, and the enforcer ‘Nik’. all 3 kids in one place, who you think will be smiling from ear to ear? das right……

ok, off to the airport, had a report of a ‘wildcat’ getting off of a plane

but with a more haole style menu.
On the last proposal they forgot to add rice to the menu, if I can get that for free, we might have a deal for a strip location.

Researchers have developed a way to create houses out of *straw* that could be the way that buildings are made in the future. Straw is a renewable resource and a by-product of farming, absorbs CO2 as it grows (negative carbon footprint buildings may be possible), and its high insulating properties mean that its houses need almost no conventional heating (saving money and helping the environment). But kids growing up in a straw house would sure get confused by a certain children’s story…

Too bad your kids are of college age and not in nursery school or around that age. They probably would know about Piper’s Son.

las vegas — hope they don’t know that name…and I better not find myself in the Penthouse suite (cannot afford) when I check in! Now, if I was driven up in a stretch limo… 🙂

But Hooters would be a “central” location, and they are known for their restaurants…though I never ate there. 🙄

Hooters, huh? It used to be the San Remo — next to the Tropicana and directly across the street from the MGM main lobby/entrance and monorail terminus).

Yes. We do end up staying until the late afternoon sun sinks in the West. The other measurement is when Koakane goes down for the final round of beeru. He’s not here this weekend, so it will prolly break up at around 2 PM.
