Tuesday update

• On second thought … Greg McMackin said there now is a possibility defensive tackle Vaughn Meatoga will make the travel roster for Saturday’s game against Idaho.

• Right tackle Adrian Thomas said he hopes to be cleared to practice this morning. He has been suffering from a lower-back injury.

• Defensive tackle Geordon Hanohano has been cleared to play against Idaho. Last week, he was cleared to practice but not play in game.

• Kicker Scott Enos said he believes he has corrected his problem that led to the low kick (which was blocked) against Fresno.

* * * * *

The UH folks didn’t seem at all disappointed that tomorrow’s match against Louisiana Tech — possibly the 1,000th victory of Dave Shoji’s career — would be postponed until Monday. They figure there will be a bigger crowd for Saturday’s match against New Mexico State.

Outside hitter Aneli Cubi-Otineru will answer your questions on today’s Warrior Beat Show, which begins at noon. You may pose questions on the blog or on the show’s Cover It Live section. Please join us.

Did I mention that Wena had a 75-minute roll at Main Street last week? For that, she won a hat (there’s no golden-arm award there) and undisclosed cash.

  1. Garret October 13, 2009 10:56 am

Glad that Aneli will be on the show today.

  2. Garret October 13, 2009 10:57 am

Congratulations to Wena for that amazing roll at Main Street! That must have been exciting for her and she must have made a ton on the craps table at that time.

Momo had a really long roll at the Horseshoe once and I remember how well he did that day.

  3. Garret October 13, 2009 10:58 am

Navy vs. SMU will be interesting for a lot of reasons: lots of coaches with Hawaii ties, huge contrast in offenses, and the defensive scheme Navy uses against SMU will probably be similar to what they use against UH late this season.

“This is going to be a tough game for us. SMU is coming off a big win versus East Carolina and is playing very well right now,” Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo said. “I have great respect for Coach Jones and he has done a great job of turning around that program. You can see the mentality of the team changing.”

“I think the players are starting to learn June more and have a better understanding of his philosophy,” Niumatalolo said. “It’s pretty obvious on tape that they are more comfortable offensively. (SMU) returned a lot of players and they are executing much better after having a year in the system.”

  4. Garret October 13, 2009 10:59 am

Another bowl is being created, this one at the Cotton Bowl.

A new college football bowl game will be played at Cotton Bowl stadium in Fair Park after the 2010 regular season.

Tom Starr, who has been working with Dallas officials on the game, said late Monday night that the date would be sometime around New Year’s Day. He did not indicate the name of the bowl or who would play.

ESPN speculated that game would involve the No. 7 team out of the Big Ten against an opponent from the Big 12 or Conference USA.

  5. PowderPuff October 13, 2009 11:00 am

Woooo hoooo, Wena! Smokin’ hot in Vegas…awesome!

Saturday is going to be fun at SSC for the 1K win celebration for Coach Shoji. 🙂

  6. SteveM October 13, 2009 11:00 am

    Good morning everyone!

    Congrats to Wena!

  7. Duster October 13, 2009 11:00 am

Really? LTU match moved to Monday? And they’re okay with that? Wow! I thought that was a joke, but it’s not April 1st. Let’s hope for a sellout crowd against NMSU on Saturday to recognize Dave.

  8. Peaches October 13, 2009 11:03 am

    Happy Birthday Kekoa!

  9. Garret October 13, 2009 11:05 am

With all the interest in Mac’s contract, I thought it was interesting to get the details on Hoke’s contract at SDSU. Remember, Hoke came off a huge season at his previous school and SDSU has a similar budget to UH.

    5 years, $675k per year.

If he leaves this year or next year for another job, he owes SDSU $1.5 mil.
If he leaves in his 3rd or 4th years, he owes $1 mil.
If he leaves in his final year, he owes $750k.

If SDSU fires him after 9/15 in the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of the deal, they get 15% off the total contract for the buyout amount.

If they fire him shortly after the season (which gives him the most time to find another job), SDSU gets an extra 5% or 10% off on the buyout in the first 3 years.

  11. Garret October 13, 2009 11:06 am

In case people didn’t get to the end of the last blog: The Idaho game will be on ESPN GamePlan and ESPN360.

    Everybody SING ALONG:

“Nine hundred ninety nine wins on the wall, nine hundred ninety nine wins, postpone just one, fans like slap themselves around… but still get nine hundred ninety nine wins on THE FREAKIN WALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 👿

  13. Slugger October 13, 2009 11:10 am

    Yay for Wena!

So what do I do with tix for Wednesday’s game?

  14. Maverick October 13, 2009 11:11 am

    Hey Garret,
The game is also broadcasting on the Denver based station, Altitude channel # 681 Direct tv’s sports package.

  15. LizKauai (WARRIORS- IMUA!) October 13, 2009 11:15 am

ANELI – Mahalo for all your great efforts on the team. When did you start playing volleyball and did you play other sports too?

  16. Slugger October 13, 2009 11:18 am

UH Ticket Office: Season tickets good for Monday’s game, any purchased can be exchanged for any game. Go early, like during the week, if you want a ticket to Saturday’s game. Guess I go walk-about to UH to xchg my ticket.

    GO WAHINE!!!

  17. Slugger October 13, 2009 11:20 am

    Kekoa & Queen Diana,

Congrats on the new addition to the ‘ohana!

  18. Kazz (Win #1000 comes on SAT 10/17/2009!!!) October 13, 2009 11:26 am

    Aloha Aneli,

Much has been said about the focus being the key when coming into WAC play considering the drop off in opposing talent from the beginning of the season. So far, how would you say your team is doing with trying to be “fired up” for your WAC competition?

  19. LizKauai (WARRIORS- IMUA!) October 13, 2009 11:26 am

    Lucky Wena!

ANELI- What is your major and what are your plans after your graduate?

  20. Kazz (Win #1000 comes on SAT 10/17/2009!!!) October 13, 2009 11:28 am

    Aloha Aneli,

New Mexico State was able to win a set the last time you met them in Las Cruces. What is your take on this year’s NMSU team as opposed to last season and will Dave Shoji’s 1000th win be on your minds more so than simply winning come this Saturday night?

  21. J-Dog October 13, 2009 11:35 am

Seems only fitting that coach Shoji’s chance at 1K wins comes on a Saturday and against the distant 2nd best team in the WAC.

No work the next day, no excuses for not packing the Stanley.

  22. Kazz (Win #1000 comes on SAT 10/17/2009!!!) October 13, 2009 11:39 am

    Aloha Aneli,

LAST THING. Just wanna say, I have enjoyed your style of play over the past three seasons, especially your grit in playing with that protective mask last year. As a fan I will miss this season’s senior class and I am 808% sure all Rainbow Wahine fans will miss your leadership and talent when it is all said and done.

Here’s hoping for all the best going forward this season and all the best to you in whatever you choose to do in life!!!

  23. Kazz (Win #1000 comes on SAT 10/17/2009!!!) October 13, 2009 11:44 am

I originally had seats in row #18 of the lower bowl for tomorrow, but with the sudden postponement the UH ticket office was able to move and secure me seats in row 7 for this Saturday.

Guess it works out for the better…

Still sucks though, as I was looking forward to something during this work week…

  24. madeinhawaii October 13, 2009 11:49 am

What’s the Federal COLA standards for Hawaii employees? Gotta tack that onto what other coaches are making.

  25. bb October 13, 2009 11:59 am

We all know the Hawaii fans are great. They are educated and very supportive of good play. What/which “away” fans during your road trips would you consider to be the polar opposite?

  26. duffer (iPhone) October 13, 2009 12:10 pm

75 minutes to retirement. Well at least one duffus is off the hook.

Way to go WINNA… Oops Wena! 🙂

  27. Willie October 13, 2009 12:13 pm

Golden Gorn, quite a detailed dissertation like response in the last post and I appreciate your detail. However to me there is a big difference between constructive rhetoric and just plain whinning & complaining. Be honest, if the team was 5 & 0 or 4 &1, you would not even have broached the coaching negativity aspect of your tirade.

You quote a lot of history, this season will also be part of history after it is done. Just a little more palatable if you were positive like a true fan. I too have great memories of sharing the big whirlpool bath with the likes of Levi Stanley, Paul Lee & Hal Stringert. I have been to all the games you mentioned too. And they were good memories, but what you have been spouting has not been good.

Coaching little league baseball is a far cry from coaching D1 football, man this is big time, big business and encompasses the whole State of Hawaii. If you are a true fan like you profess, just try to be more positive in what has proven to be a challenging time in UH Football history.

  28. freznofrenzy October 13, 2009 12:37 pm

Re your post to me last week.
I guess it was not a good day for UH. May the best team win on the Idaho game.

  29. Kekoa (iPhone) October 13, 2009 12:41 pm

Chawan ~ I trust you will be xchanging our vb tics for Sat. Can you add one more for me?

chawan – I know you already have tickets for Saturday but are you going to try and change the Wednesday tickets for Saturday?

  33. Kekoa October 13, 2009 1:12 pm

    Frank25 ~ Thank you for the B-day wishes…

No doubt that you, leading today’s young Warriors into battle is the difference in our having lower casualty rates than other units. You are today’s Hawaiian Suppahman!

Me, BG, Col A-house, we all served proudly. Our time in service passed many years ago. Now it is we, who thank you, for your service Frank.

  34. Ralph October 13, 2009 1:20 pm

  35. Kekoa October 13, 2009 1:22 pm

Again for the many Tsaiko’s and lurkers who have sent in special msgs of Aloha, I thank you. I have truly been blessed this year with a very beautiful little Great grandchild to welcome into our ‘ohana. I couldn’t have asked for a more wonderful birthday present…

    (Ok, a future 6’6″ 310 lb Ballerina/O-line guard would’ve been nice).

Nice visual huh DPK?…Swan Lake in football cleats and a tutu.

RE: Rausch’s comments in today’s HA.

Now that I got a chance to really read the context in which Rausch responded “it’s not my decision anymore”, I think it was more in reference to his addition to the travel roster not being in time with his full medical clearance as opposed to his role or in competing for #1 still in his grasp.

  38. Kazz (Win #1000 comes on SAT 10/17/2009!!!) October 13, 2009 1:25 pm

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO KEKOA!!!

  39. dittohead October 13, 2009 1:44 pm

“Be honest, if the team was 5 & 0 or 4 &1, you would not even have broached the coaching negativity aspect of your tirade”.

If we were 5-0 or 4-1 what Gorn posted wouldnt have merit.
You cite a hypothetical that is untrue and base your soapbox tirade on falacy.
Not all “true” fans are koolaid abusers…..get off your high horse. True fans care enough about the program to make it better through discussion and analysis–your blind faith only promotes incompetence and fantasy.

  40. Jn October 13, 2009 1:47 pm

#27 get off your high horse, you don’t have to be a d1 coach or a coach for that matter to give your honest opinion on this season. All opinions should be welcome here. And just because someone does’nt agree with the present coaching staff does’nt make them less of a true fan. You don’t have to be going to the games for 40 years to make you a true Hawaii fan either. You could be 12 years old and be a true Hawaii fan. If you were such an expert how come your not coaching our team? If you don’t like other peoples opinions then don’t read them but don’t fault other people because they don’t think like you. I could’nt stand by and let people be branded unjustfly for speaking their mind. Last time I checked free speech is allowed here in Hawaii too.

  41. Jn October 13, 2009 1:51 pm

Hey dittohead we are thinking alike. lol

  42. postmanke October 13, 2009 1:53 pm

Navy vs SMU – What?? The Triple Option is favored by 7 points against the mighty Run Shoot?

    Go Kenny!

  43. LizKauai (WARRIORS- IMUA!) October 13, 2009 1:53 pm

    I missed this awhile back.

“Each level is significantly different, and now a year and a half in, I have learned what it takes to succeed in the NFL and I’m anxious to get back out there next season,” Brennan said. “I have got used to the game itself and I have figured out what it takes to mature and learn to be a successful player in the NFL”.

Brennan expressed that his time at Saddleback gave him great memories that he will have for the rest of his life.

The fans who come out may never know who or what they will see.

For Brennan, he had no clue what his future had in store for him during his time at Saddleback.

Five years later, he came back to remember the Gauchos.”

  44. Mrs. A-House October 13, 2009 2:03 pm

    Kekoa –

Wow! Proud to be a Libra along with you and so many other prominent Tsaikos! HAPPY BIRTHDAY! to you…one of the finest representatives of the Hawaiian Kingdom residing on ceded lands!

Congratulations also on the birth of your great grandchild! So many happy events to celebrate and keep on smiling.

Let’s dwell on only the positives for our Warrior football team…transmitting good wishes for a safe trip to Idaho…stay focused…eliminate mistakes…win if you can, lose if you must, but continue to play with honor and pride. Bonafide Tsaikos will support you…no matter what. JUST DO IT!

  45. Pride. October 13, 2009 2:21 pm

Congrats to Wena on her 75 minute roll. That’s awesome.

  46. Bulla October 13, 2009 2:25 pm

i began to ponder how did Wena learn how to ‘rattle’ those dice in such a precise manner? visions of certain hand gestures would surely fill one’s mind if you were to consider the dexterity, control, and rhythm involved to produce such a fortuitous result. can someone define for me ‘undisclosed cash’? 🙂

  47. al October 13, 2009 2:29 pm

    well mr. tsai…
    that seals it.

al, you remember about the tower at practice, but neva get off the ground??? remember the coach who started it??? hint: bear. I am not sure if all the major teams have access to one, but this is one piece of equipment that the coaches could truly use in practice and help them see exactly what is going on. will do searching and see if it is something that other teams use. by the way, you coming to maui this week???? duffer said he retired?????

  51. d1島 October 13, 2009 2:52 pm

duffer was commenting on Wena’s roll. 75 minutes before she retired.

What website do I go to in order to translate English into whatevas and vice versa?

We have volleyball season tickets. Do we have to exchange Wednesday to next Monday or will that happen automatically? We’d already planned to attend Saturday’s game.

Will have a final report tomorrow concerning last Saturday’s T-Gate HI-5 Drive. So far, we raised $26.40 in redemption fees for the Hawaii High School Athletic Association donated by a now-retired UH math professor who shares our love for choral singing, the environment, and all sports at all levels.

Don’t forget that the proceeds from the October 24 T-Gate HI-5 Drive will go to the SERVING UP 1,000 Fundraiser for the Wahine volleyball program. More information on that early next week.

Freeway World Series?? What are the odds?

    Back to work.

    22 cases!

How the heck did any of us even remember the game?

  63. WarriorMojo October 13, 2009 3:31 pm

D1, maybe you guys drank five cases before the game and seventeen cases afterwards?

  64. Willie October 13, 2009 3:37 pm

Jn, I am not an expert, never said I was one, not remotely qualified to coach the team and in no way implied this. You might want to go back the last 3 or 4 posts to check out the Gorn Guy’s comments. This guy was very negative and his comments do imply that he is an expert on D1 football coaching expertise, more qualified then the current coaching staff.

That is why I replied, he was just so negative and had the solution to all the team’s problems. Because he had all the answers I really wanted to know the level of his ability. Too many armchair coaches think they know it all by TV analyst osmosis. If you never played the game and never coached you need to stick to general comments instead of professing to be an expert.

I am just trying to convey that there is a way to get your point across by not seeming to know it all and keeping a positive light on the subject.

  65. duffer (iPhone) October 13, 2009 3:49 pm

I’ve quit competitive golf unless I play people the same age or older. 🙂

Did Wena get anything besides money from Main Street?

I’ll check Boyd’s 10 K and see if she made an “impact” in their quarterly earnings!

So, nobody is going to comment on Wena’s 75-minute roll?
I think it actually came out to 23 rolls, because it takes so long with the payouts.
I remember in Shreveport, one of the dealers was new, and she didn’t collected off the field line instead of paying out. Dealer was so bad she actually got replaced before her shift was up. I had never seen that before.

Two things are inevitable when a team is on a losing streak:
    • Some want the coach fired.
    • Some want to offer advice how they’d fix the problem.
The critics are angry. I let them vent … as long as they don’t attack other readers.

I dont get guys like Willie. He admits his knowledge of football is shallow. He admits he doesnt know Gorn.
Yet, he critizes someone who wrote a very detailed and honest analysis of what he observes and perceives with the UH football program in general and McM in particular….it’s an honest opinion. A valued opinion to be honest that hits the bullseye in many areas.
    But that’s my opinion.
Just like I get called a hater for picking UNLV, LTU and Idaho.
    Why shoot the messenger?
Why the trash talk about negativety?
That’s Willie’s slant because he is so deep into sugar he farts sweet.

So there’s been talk of Coach Mack wanting his boys to play a little more wreckless on defense, even Pride pointed this out.

I was hoping it would start 808% this past Saturday against the run and I thought we would be able to sacrifice a few pass plays.

Still think the defense showed a little more heart and tackled a little better against FSU seeing as Ryan Matthews never had those big runs against BSU against us.

The failed redzone attempt which led to the blocked FG should have been 7 points for us and 7 points less for FSU and everything after that may have been up for grabs like our game against them last year.

Hindsight does nothing much for the present.

Also, I can see what Coach Mack means about not wanting to “worry about the negatives and wanting to focus on the positives”, but you can’t forget about them as the negatives are mistakes that need to be taken care of.

Fans, more than coaches, should be the ones to try to forget the negatives as much as possible. JMHO. 😎

Anomalies arising from the 2009 Warrior football season

    1. Fans taking losing hard.

    2. In house fighting erupts on football blogs

    3. Even the most congenial people/fans are saying the most horrible things about Coach Mack and his assistants

    4. Attendance(s) at games are down

    5. Patronage(s) at bars telecasting the UH game are down

    6. Re#4&5 beer sales are up as spectators are imbibing more as in drowning out their sorrows of watching the Warriors losing badly.

    7. Spectators resorting to eating more comfort type foods on game days are on the rise. Again to curb their sorrows.

    8. Sales of McNuggets and Big Mac sales plummet during the football season. The reasons are obvious.

    9. Sales of contraceptives peak during game days. Word has it that frustration and boredom of watching the Warriors lose badly acts as an aphrodisiac.

    10. Church attendance is up. Some praying in seeing the light at the other end of the tunnel. Others praying that their transgression of inventiveness towards the coach and team are forgiven.

    11. Piqued interests in hearing the Call the Coach show rises as the coach routinely putting his foot in his mouth resulting in the audience getting a good laugh.

    12. Television and radio sales are up. No explanation needed here.

    13. Spectators, mainly blogger, regressing more, like remembering the good old days of hard nosed, winning Warrior football.

    For our mainland Tsaikos:

Call The Coach Show with Coach Mack 10/13/2009:

-Show opens with Bobby C bringing up the improved Idaho Vandles. Coach Mack says Rob Akey has stuck through the “lumps” of the previous years and says he’s done a good job and says this Saturday is a big game as both Hawaii and Idaho are fighting for bowl games.

-Coach Mack says that “we’re well trained at traveling” with reference to another road game. Coach says we need to play a good ball game, says that Moscow is a tough place to get to (up to Seattle, then Pullman, then Moscow). Coach mentions the volume inside the Kibbie Dome will be a task and brings up the 5 picks against UH in 2007 and says it will be a real challenge. Coach Mack says the practices have been good and expects us to play well.

-Coach Mack says again that we’re not the same team as we were in the fall and goes through the list of injures and how they’ve all been good players and Coach Mack says “ROYCE POLLARD (stress fracture) AND VAUGHN MEATOGA (ankle) WILL NOT TRAVEL TO MOSCOW”. Coach Mack says that Alexander is doing well and says that they’ll be sending videos of the Idaho game for Alexander to watch and says that “it ruined his season” with regards to Alexander going down.

-Coach Mack says that Brashton still needs to go to the NCAA to fill out the proper paper work to file for a sixth season.

-Coach Mack describes the Idaho defense as being a year older. Says their DTs are “smallish” but active, and says their LB and DBs are back and they’ve been playing well. Coach Mack says that they’ve played well against the run and that their passing defensive stats are deceiving.

-Bobby C says the Idaho defense had 6 sacks in 6 games. Coach Mack says Idaho is more of a zone defense. They’ll rush four mostly, but will rush more when needed.

-Coach Mack says he fully expects “Mo” to have a better game in Moscow and says the team is behind him.

-Bobby C on Moniz: “What we expected from him we did get.” Coach Mack says that the “game is not too big for him”. Coach Mack says that the receivers need to get a feel for their QB and vice versa and mentions 60 yards of passing that got called back from other offensive penalties. Coach Mack says he’s talked to Coach Rolo and Coach R. Lee and they’re feeling good about Moniz. Coach Mack says that they (coaches) understand that they need to have more pressure off Moniz ala running game.

-Coach Mack praises LWJ and says that he’s had bad luck all his career and gives credit to Brian Smith this season in working with LWJ, A. Green, and Inoke. Coach Mack also confirms that Chizzy Dimude is NOT pronounced “CHIZZY” like how it’s spelled, but actually pronounced as “CHEESY”. (Dimude corrected Coach Mack on this earlier in fall camp) 😯 Coach Mack says that Dimude needs to work on his run blocking, but there is no doubt Dimude can run with the ball.

-“Doug” brings up the “booing factor” at home games and says that his opinion is that “his opinion is that one shouldn’t boo young kids that are playing hard (audience applauses). Bobby C chimes in that in his opinion that some in Hawaii loses sight that UH athletes are STUDENT athletes with a lack of a professional sports team. Coach Mack says he just met with the seniors and says that his job is for him to do everything he can to win games and to help them graduate from school. Coach Mack says that the people that boo don’t know what the team is going through, anytime, Coach Mack says that some players are behind due to the road trip or whatever and that some are afraid to speak to their professors. Coach Mack says that we’re gonna be on the road this week and then home and then on the road again. Coach Mack says that it’s kind of like a controlled scrambling right now to make sure the players are getting time for their classes. Coach Mack says that if a player needs to leave for class during practice or for study time, he’ll let them because education is a priority. Coach Mack says that if the booers actually understand what all student athletes have to go through in the modern NCAA era then they wouldn’t be booing them.

-Coach Mack says that this season’s high school senior recruiting class looks good. Mentions there was a HS QB at the game with his dad and things went well. Coach Mack says that we’re waiting for certain previous offers and more kids are looking to sign LOIs for UH at the same time and that those still without answers to UH on a commit are not obviously going to have all the time to make a decision.

I would like to share Sports Illustrated interview with Coach Mike Singletary who says:

” he doesn’t care at all about big names or individual accolades”

” constant message is team and togetherness”

” strategy is attack on defense, remain alert, disciplined and aggressive until the final whistle”

” greatness is not about someone who has the ability to be great; greatness shows up when someone might not have that ability but finds a way to succeed”

” they work, outhit, outfight their opponents”

” give me the guy who has maybe just enought talent to be on the field but hinks he’s great and who’s willing to do whatever he can do to contribute to make the team better”

” most important thing is to come together and believe in one another and have that as our foundation”

a message that perhaps the Warriors can use for the rest of this season

Call The Coach Show with Coach Mack 10/13/2009 Part III:

-“Dennis” asks Coach Mack asks about his “veteran defensive staff” and asks about the evaluation process with the players (“Dennis” chuckles about how hard it is to watch the UH defense as of late) . (Audio is fading in and out). Coach Mack says he’s in a situation he’s never been in before. Coach Mack says we have 11 new starters and they’re all good athletes, but nobody complained in the first three games, but then “we stunk it up” in Ruston. Coach Mack brings up the situations around that game with the tsunami in Samoa, etc… Coach Mack also mentions the type of running attack they faced in Ruston and says flat out that LaTech played better than us. Coach Mack says then we played against the #3 running team in the country in FSU. Coach Mack says people think FSU “ran all over us”, but says that if you look at the film, FSU’s longest single run was 19 yards and that FSU ran for more yards against Boise State that against us. Coach Mack credits Fresno State’s offensive line as well. Coach Mack says that we just need to get better and will continue to focus on the positives from the Fresno State games and “deal” with the negatives like the blocked field goals and redzone failed attempts. Coach Mack says FSU did beat us at the run, but it wasn’t as bad as it seemed. (audience applauded)

-Caller has his kids chanting “let’s go Warriors!!! LET’S GO!!!” over the phone. 😎 This caller says that the gameday experience was good for his family and they stayed until the end. (Audio is fading in and out). Coach Mack thanks this fan and says that there are alot more fans feeling good and says that this caller and his kids “made his night”. Coach Mack says that we have a lot to over come and things are not going to get easier, but with people like him helps him (Coach Mack) to stay at the office longer at night.

Call The Coach Show with Coach Mack 10/13/2009 Part IV:

-“Craig” thinks that a lot of long time Hawaii fans take UH football personally and that a lot of people are truly passionate and says that UH football has a more longer history of defense than offense before the run and shoot. “Craig” asks what is happening with recruiting to get back to that. Coach Mack says that he’s been able to “tell people” Coach Mack says he still believes that Hawaii fans are still the best fans and says that those that are venting have the right to and jokes that it’s good that Bobby C has to deal with them and he does, but seriously says that he understands that the fans out there want us to win so bad. Coach Mack says that he came up with the “We Play For You” in Maui for that spring game. Coach Mack says that 85-90 % are with the team and those that are venting are simply hurting when we lose and Coach Mack says he hurts when we lose as much as anybody. “Craig” says that he hasn’t spoken to a Hawaii fan yet that isn’t supporting him. “Craig” ends saying that he hopes the recruiting efforts continue to keep the best players home. Coach Mack says that the recruiting efforts have not changed and says that the program is way ahead in terms of recruiting efforts than it has ever been.

-Coach Mack says he looks at the numbers in terms of who’s graduating and says we have 6 offensive lineman that have verballed to UH and still waiting for one more and we need some corners, defensive lineman, etc… Coach Mack again touches on not wanting to be in the QB situation we are in last season and DOESN’T want to end up with large graduating classes like the last two seasons.

-“Raymond” asks Coach Mack about the ratio between high school targets and JUCO. Coach Mack says that we’re down in personel from past graduating classes which is why we have the JUCOs we do. Coach says that he’d like to get about five more JUCOs for next season, but on top of that the focus and drive will head on to high schoolers. Coach Mack points out the freshman that are contributing like Dunnachie, L. Ingram, Haku Correa, Paipai Falemalu, etc… Coach says that this is an example of where he wants the recruiting to focus on talented high schoolers sooner than later.

-“Marvin” says that he doesn’t feel good about the team right now and says something about Funaki participating in the redzone attempts. Coach Mack says he too is bothered and promises that the coaching staff is working hard to fix all the issues. Coach Mack says that the entire program is fighting through adversity right now and says all he can promise him right now is that the kids and the coaches are not giving up and hopes he and other fans will be happier come the next game.

    Tuesday update
October 13th, 2009 by Stephen Tsai

    • Kicker Scott Enos said he believes he has corrected his problem that led to the low kick (which was blocked) against Fresno.

Hope Enos isn’t getting too hard on himself. I have to admit, I felt odd and doubted his abilites after some issues during fall camp with his kicking game, but thus far, I take back everything I thought and said as he’s proven he can kick when needed.

I can’t remember how long the FG attempt was, but I think most are right when they attributed his low aim to get more power behind his kick as to why it got blocked.

Scott Enos is gonna be ok!

Please don’t take my Call The Coach stuff as actual transcripts. I type as best as I can as they’re talking so it can be a little off if you’re looking for detailed stuffs. 😛

Plus the 1420am reception isn’t that great when my PC is on. I have a ghetto-arse alarm clock/radio. 😆

My special congrats to Wena for her long roll. It is not an easy task as most “shooters” will carp out” within the first 5 rolls of the dice. Many times even less.

To go 23 rolls is great and of course, hoping with great jealousy, that I was on her table. Stretch and G’nalo would have gone crazy!!!!

Main Street allows up to 20x odds so a $5 pass bet can be supported by a $100 odds bet. Many craps players always put down their odds after the first roll. Personally, I wait and on many ocassions, I do not put an odds bet at all. I would rather take the chips and “place” the numbers giving me a better chance to win. Play the “field”. Play the “hard ways”. Play the “horn”. Only time one wins the “odds bet” is when the shooter makes his/her point. And, that could take a long time.

Last April, my friend had a very, very, very long roll – shooting all the numbers except his point # and finally crapped out without throwing a “pass”. His number was 5.

We all have our own system for craps and I’m sure that Wena used hers to her best advantage!!!

  143. Silky Voice of the Gorn October 13, 2009 8:12 pm

    Tsai, it works both ways.

What about the tsaikos who attack those posters who vent.
Dont be a hyprocrite–clean up your house too.

Nope, blog hosts can make whatever rules they wish and arbitrarily enforce them as they see fit since that is their prerogative even if it is hypocritically one sided. That is no different than Bobby Curran screening callers who ask the really tough questions (as the voice of UH football, he has an agenda). Their house, their rules. Plus that is how things are here in Hawaii; very political and who you know (yes, I know it is like that elsewhere but having lived elsewhere, being isolated on an island in the middle of nowhere makes it many times worse here). As a UH booster, I understand that side of the fence and the sort of ugly and at times, childish games that people play.

I’m not too surprised either that my last post on the other days posting would be removed but someone else kept pecking away goading for a response. Normally I just ignore types like that but I directly answered that person. Unfortunately, your blog host took that as attacking another reader. Make of it what you will but yes, I’ve read worse by some of the regulars here.

Tsai, you no longer have to worry about me as it isn’t worth my time any more when I have no idea if what I’m going to write will be deleted into the bitbucket including this post.

Word of advice before I take my leave. Don’t let your insider access with the UHAD and friendship with the coaching staff get in the way of objectively asking this coaching staff the tough questions and don’t let them answer you with smokescreen and mirrors. Their audience out there, the fans, especially the loyal ones are not stupid and can figure these things out quickly. Respect is sometimes garnered when people can be straight up honest with each other rather than being so “tatemae” (go and ask las vegas for a detailed explanation about exactly what this means in Japanese culture and society) about it.

  148. Garret October 13, 2009 8:30 pm

Mac and many others are correct to point out that the red zone problems are really hurting the team. To put things in perspective, I linked to the NCAA stats for red zone success.

UH is rated *117* in red zone scoring, with 14 scores in 23 attempts (61%). Only 8 TDs in 23 drives in the red zone comes out to less than a 35% TD success rate…pretty near at the bottom.

UH plays SJSU soon and Tomey’s team has done well in the red zone–scoring every time they get into the red zone, with TDs 82% of the time in the red zone.

Idaho has a 82% scoring rate in the red zone, with TDs 50% of the time they get into the red zone. They have *10* rushing TDs and just 1 passing TD, so they appear to have a run tendency in the red zone–with great success at it so they probably won’t change that unless UH stops their red zone runs.

SMU has a 82% scoring rate in the red zone, with TDs 73% of the time when they get into the red zone. They have scored the same number of TDs rushing and passing. The have been in the red zone less than half of the time that UH has, but they have scored the same number of TDs as UH.

I’ve been seeing the term ” honest opinion ” lately. I just don’t believe there is such an animal. You have informed opinions, uniformed opinions and subjective opinions. Most opinions here are a combination of uniformed and subjective opinions. Can’t get mad at that cause everyone has a right to be uniformed. That is my ” honest opinion “.

  155. Garret October 13, 2009 8:39 pm

The Big 12 just announced their bowl lineup for the next 4 years, which includes the new bowl in New York city (at Yankee Stadium). I hope that Karl Benson has been proactive with the bowl situation and noticed that the Independence Bowl in Shreveport and the Sun Bowl in El Paso have been dumped by the Big 12…so there may be openings for another conference.

With Louisiana Tech a team on the rise and almost surely going to make a bowl game each year, it would seem that Shreveport and El Paso would be geographically suited for them. It would be great for the WAC to add another bowl spot for the prestige of the conference and so that bowl eligible teams are not left out.

Garret, Hello my brother. How are you doing?

That’s what I’m trying to understand about Gorn. He had two long posts late on the October 11 blog. His posts were #170 and #172.

He then had a long post on the October 12 blog, post #481.

I’m guessing that he didn’t see his #481 and assumed — erroneously — that it was deleted, but I could be wrong. Hopefully, he’ll clarify that.

  159. Garret October 13, 2009 8:43 pm

I didn’t check back to the 10/12 and the 10/11 blogs to see if a post was deleted so I don’t know which blog and what subject the post was covering. I didn’t see anything that I thought was over the line, but I might not have seen the post if it was deleted before I read it.

Watching the replay of today’s Warrior Beat Show with Aneli Cubi-Otineru and it doesn’t take an expert to wonder why this young lady so successful on the court.

Never too high and never too low and leads by example and vocal and emotional support.

Got chicken skin when she got emotional with regards to her love for her family towards the end of the show, but that just shows that this girl is genuine with her words and her emotions.

Great character leads to a great talent on and off the volleyball court.

She may not have the Jamie Houston or Kim Willoughby like stats once her UH career is over, but faithful and good volleyball fans will remember her in annals of Rainbow Wahine Volleyball history. The digs, the service aces, and the monster kills!!!

  165. WarriorMojo October 13, 2009 8:48 pm

    Regarding # 148

    Thanks for the info Garret:

Also interesting is while both SJSU and Idaho score 82% of the time and UH scores 61% of the time when they are in the red zone, SJSU averages 15.6 points a game, Idaho averages 28.66 points a game and UH averages 23.8 points a game. It appears we get there more often than either team, just can’t punch it in.

  168. Garret October 13, 2009 8:52 pm

I’m hoping that you are correct, as I honestly had thought that the #170, #172, and #481 posts were from the same day, so I can see how Gorn might have made that mistake. The days have kind of blended together lately on the blog and I hope that we have happier topics to cover after the Idaho game.

I hope that you are doing well. My work has been okay. We had a Navy contract start a week or so ago and we won a NSF contract, with two more under review. My subcontractor for the NSF contract is Santa Clara University, so I scheduled a meeting for this contract that is “coincidentally” going to occur in Santa Clara a couple of days after the SJSU game:

Now I just need to get some funding in collaboration with someone at UH so that I can schedule meetings that “coincidentally” occur a few days before or after a game at Aloha Stadium.

I think that *everyone*, from the coaches to the players to the fans have noticed the problems in the red zone this season. The sad thing is that the UNLV game would probably have been different if the red zone offense had done better. The Fresno State game turned on a drive in the red zone where UH threw an INT. I can’t remember if the blocked FG was after the first drive in the Fresno State game stalled in the red zone, but if it did then that was big also.

I thought I heard the UH coaching staff say that they focused on the red zone offense in the week before one game…and then that I formation was used that probably won’t be used again.

I’ve talked with UH profs many times, given a seminar at UH, and looked for compatible research being done at UH. Unfortunately, the last time I visited UH’s EE Department (had a meeting with the Department Chair to figure out if there was a match) they didn’t have a prof was a match for my company’s work. They had hired someone who might be a match, so I’ll visit UH next time I’m in Hawaii to see.

There is funding that I can get from the National Science Foundation where they will pay my company to work with a University. I find a professor to take $105k and NSF will give my company $45k for our trouble. Trouble is, I insist on the work actually being useful instead of just wasting the government’s money…

  190. whitey October 13, 2009 9:08 pm

kazz, i have not been a big wahine fans the last few years and the basic reason was our offense was a one woman show. it wouldn’t be bad if she could produce, but shoji left her in games which she should have been yanked and let others play. this was my major reason and stated that early on before the season started that if the wahines stick to their one dimensional offense, they would suck. lo and behold, coach shoji realized that his best teams did not involve a one dimensional game, but involved the whole team and look where they are today. for that i congratulate coach shoji and his staff and give this team a lot of credit for working and playing as a team.

  191. Stephen Tsai October 13, 2009 9:09 pm

The Jets are a bunch of losers and that’s my honest opinion……….

Nah, just kidding I really like the Jets. LOL

    ST: from fb:
Kenny Meatoga: “Vaughn won’t be making the trip to Idaho. Went to the Hawaii Sports Clinic and got an MRI which showed a ligament tear along the ankle so he’ll be doing therapy and stuff.”

  224. WarriorMojo October 13, 2009 10:31 pm

Garret, good to hear that things are going well for you. Too bad you haven’t been able to find a way to get those funds to UH yet, but keep trying. The school needs every penny.

In other news it’s looking more and more like you and Brew won’t be able to ignore me at the San Jo game this year. I really wanted to go, but the heartache was just too great last time. Nah, actually I have a ton of work stuff scheduled before and after that weekend so I don’t think I can get away.

  225. WarriorMojo October 13, 2009 10:38 pm

So, I’m wondering what Gorn is gonna do now. He apparently got upset over his own misunderstanding, but he made such a melodramatic exit he might feel funny coming back.

Gorn, if you’re out there, you should come back. I thought your posts were interesting and well-written. That’s not to say that I agreed with everything you wrote, but definitely worth reading in my opinion.

I once held the dice for 45 mins at your casino, S.T., but at that time I didn’t know how to bet, so I wasn’t making a lot of money, but everyone else on the table did. Used to go there when my father-in-law & Uncle were alive.

    ST ~

Do they have practice tomorrow morning? Think I’ll go & then head to the box office to xchg my ticket.

Okay, just got back from another walkabout…

Everyone is entitled to their opinion.
Everyone should be able to voice that opinion.
Post with respect and get respect.
Post with disrespect and get disrespect.
Talk trash and you better be able to take trash.

Is the koolaid glass half empty or half full? Does it matter?
No, and that is what makes the idea of a collective thought process so intriguing to everyone. The interaction of minds of a common thread communicating through respectful dialogue is a voice heard loud and clear.

One thing we can all agree on…GO WARRIORS!

Okay, going back to the mountains.

  237. bighilofan2 October 14, 2009 1:04 am

okay, these are my honest opinions….

    Sanchez is a queen. 😆

Mack gots2 hook up wit Garrett and lern how fo make all smaht wit da public speaking. 😆

Mack gotta give orders to Rolo and Ron, sumtin like dis: ONE OF YOU, and only 1 of you, is the boss inside the 25. da collaboratin is done befo da game. DO YOU JOB ! INSPIRE CONFIDENCE IN THE QB. DO A GREAT JOB EVALUATING YOUR PERSONNEL OPTIONS BEFORE THE GAME, LOOK WHO IS LIKELY TO DO GOOD AT GAME TIME, MAKE A PLAN AN STICK TO DA PLAN UNTIL DA END OF DA 1ST QTR.!

Actually i think Mack is doing something like that. and I like how he’s standing up for himself. We need our leader to act like our leader. through thick and thin.

i actually got hope, after i got over my personal issues. 😯

    Go Warriors.

  238. bighilofan2 October 14, 2009 1:18 am

    Coach Tormey,

now i’m confused. who runnin da safeties gametime, you o miano?

I was watching my personal favorite safety hanging out in centerfield alot during the last game. That bradda can hit when he hits! but no can hit if he not close enough to da akshun.

jmo, you gotta scheme so get him more involved sooner in the scraps.
hanging way off da ball is good to prevent da long runs, but bad against teams who can execute da shorter gains.

but tank did good, huh?! mana is my fave!

  239. bighilofan2 October 14, 2009 1:21 am

wuzza good game, Jets an Cincy.

both qbs did good. both coaches were classy.

    coulda gone either way.

    i actually felt for Ocho… 😆

Cincy won the game without the greatest player in the world
    being directly involved. 😆

  240. bighilofan2 October 14, 2009 1:25 am

NMSU player was charged with a felony…and got a 3-day suspension that doesn’t even include a game. Meanwhile, Nevada kicked a player off their team.

According to a press release issued by New Mexico State, the school has suspended running back Marquell Colston for a 72-hour period, in accordance with NMSU policy. Colston was charged with a third-degree felony late Monday afternoon.

Nevada junior offensive lineman Mike Gallett has been suspended for the rest of the 2009 season, head football coach Chris Ault announced today in a press release.

“Mike has been suspended for a violation of team rules,” Ault said. “He is still a member of our program and he is still a student at the University of Nevada.”

my biggest worry about da Idaho game is our offense.

no mo offense no mo poi. our offense is da air attack. but we gotta use da shuffle pass mooah, not in da 4th quarter, in da 1st quarter. gotta get da RBs in da passing game after da snap, first recognizing da coverage an going frum dare.

sheesh, gotta draw da play frum Hilo?

o, an 1 mo ting. da braddaz gotta catch da ball.

  260. bighilofan2 October 14, 2009 6:38 am

  281. hotwheels October 14, 2009 9:55 am

sorry to see that silky is all huhu with the blog. i really liked reading his posts. all i can say is that i don’t think ST is biased but there are alot of regulars on this site and most want to hear only one point of view and get PO’d at others. that’s pretty common in most blogs but this one has more regulars that hang out or know each other, or so it seems.

i look at this as just adding my opinion. i don’t try to say how to coach nor how to fix what is wrong, because i feel as a coach, you do what you do and live with the results. but i will add my opinion on who i think will win, whether i want that outcome or not. and i call out what i think is just BS excuses.

i certainly think it’s funny what people write sometimes and don’t agree with alot that is written, but it is just opinion and that is why i read it in the first place, for entertainment puposes. don’t take the comments too seriously silky, and just write what you believe, if it makes you feel good.

  282. hotwheels October 14, 2009 10:04 am

    that said…..Idaho 28 UH 10….sorry Tsaikos

  289. kama krab October 14, 2009 10:48 am

    Howzit Everybody,

My take on this is that everyone has there opinions whether it is with the norm or against. We all are not here to make friends or agree with each other but what we are here for is to celebrate our Warriors. Whether it is constructive criticism or just some crazy opinion, everyone has a voice. For the most part I love to reading both sides of the story whether I like it or not. If I totally don’t agree with a veiw point then I will question it a give my reasoning. This is just part of the process. I don’t think anybody should totally agree with another person’s opinion because it is just that, “An Opinion”.

What I will say is I don’t like when people come on the blog calling people idiots and koolaid drinkers. I mean so what if some of us like koolaid should it bother anybody. This is what we chose to drink. If we chose to say the praises then that is what we chose to do. And on a side note, I always like koolaid and that is probably why my dentist always scold me now about my cavities.

But to close this off, I am always open to opinion and I love to read other peoples view points. What I don’t like is when people start getting nasty and that kind of people have no place in open forum like to Warrior Beat.
