Farewell, 2012

Well, it wasn’t dull.

If it felt like a long year, well, that’s because it was a leap year.

But it also was because it consisted of the Wonder fiasco (and for his own sake, Stevie Wonder should just put on a concert so his last name won’t forever rhyme with “blunder”), Norm Chow’s first UH season, and the arrival of the Ben Jay era (he’s due here any week, right?).

The year’s about to expire, and it’s time to pound the mochi.

We made it this far, so if you’re going to drink, don’t drive. And if you’re going to drink, in honor of the Koakane, Stretch and the Coloma Ohana, make it a green bottle. (Ginger Ale comes in a green bottle, right?)

Take care, folks.

  4. Chicken Grease December 31, 2012 7:49 am

Final ohyaooooooooooooooogozaimasu of 2012!!!!!! Enjoy it 🙂 .

a Grease’s Predictions for 2013 (not to be taken in the same level of seriousness as some o’these 12-21-2012- believers had with regard to their own now-as-old-as-bell-bottoms-horse-and-buggy-and-8-track-tape belief/took stock in; but, hey, if one or more of these come true in 2013, a Grease is greasy good! 😉 ):

    • Let’s start out with something easy and easily predictable: there will be NO major gun law changes on the federal level in 2013. (a Grease’ll probably repeat this prediction each year. Thank you.)

    • There will be no major U.S. Contemporary celebrity (i.e., Whitney, Jacko, etc.) deaths in 2013. Does not include older, still active, celebrities (i.e., Jack Nicholson, Betty White, etc.)

    • A North Korean missile test will actually hit something on land other than their own territory; China will not back them up. International response will make North Korea apologize.

    • Queen of England will suffer a major health scare that will be the headline for a week or two. Her illness may lead to her death.

    • Mr. Stephen Tsai will be asked by Ben Jay himself to run an encapsulized football Warrior-focused maarketing/PR unit of Uh athletics.

    • Warrior football will win six (6) games. Sorry.

Normally, a Grease hates “end of year/best of” lists, but, this exception I find a bit intriguing (albeit, not a new idea). You Oceanic digital subscribers — one of the the Music Choice “hits” channels. (Pop or “Hit List” something or other) is supposed to begin a top hits of 2012 countdown sometime today (thought I saw “starts at 7pm”, but, could be going on as we post, so, tune in to one of those 800 Music Choice channels for more detail.) TRULY uninterrupted countdown and w/out silly fanfare if youse know how the Music Choice channels work. 🙂

    Happy pre-2013, all.

ESPN reports that the MWC will be paying for Boise exit fee from the BE. Why? Boise is moving to a faltering BE, they want out, the MWC should be patient then dictate terms to Boise to keep them from bailing out in the future. Boise also wants to keep its own TV contract.

did the big 12 pay the big least for TCU? i don’t think so.

if the MWC sends payment, that will be a stupid move.

make the big least take the MWC to court.

  55. Ralph December 31, 2012 10:25 am

#53 that is what ESPN reports, SDST hasn’t committed to the MWC, but I would think the deadline for them passed considering they committed to the BE before Boise. Boise waited for the 12th hour to pull out without signing on to the BE.

Boise says its pulling teams out of the BW, I think this bodes well for UH wahine sports not having to travel to Boise. Waiting on SDST, their teams are also in the BW conference. I hope the BW had an exit fee for Boise and SDST.

When you get greedy, eventually you will get burned. Don’t people watch Burn Notice!!! Boise St., those arrogant bastards. I hope they get their okoles kicked. Sooner or later Chris Petersen will leave for greener pastures, probably the PAC 12, maybe at Washington or Oregon. Sarkisian is on the hot seat and Chip Kelly might be persuaded to go to the NFL. Lose Petersen and that’s like the head being cut off. Their other programs are mediocre at best. But I admire how Boise St. football keep winning big every year, for so long from Dirk Koetter, from Dan Hawkins, to now Petersen. Sooner or later, they will come back to the pack. Texas did, USC did, Penn St. did, and so did Virginia Tech.

SMU and Houston to accept invites to the MWC.

There is a bonus paid to each MWC school for play on national TV ESPN/CBS/NBC, $300,000 per game, I think it’s a extra $200,000 for a National TV home game for a total of $500,000.

So the USC vs Hawaii game, Hawaii will get paid a bonus of $500,000 from the new MWC TV contract!

  66. Whats up December 31, 2012 11:25 am

I’m sorry not additional $200,000 for a National TV home game but rather a National TV weekend game.

  67. Committed Road Warrior December 31, 2012 11:27 am

In all honesty, I don’t think the MWC will have to kick in too much to pay Boise’s exit fees from the Big East. I mean…Boise had to pay the MWC exit fees when they left for the Big East, right?

Also, the restructured MWC TV deal will at least allow them to try sell off the USC-UH game to ESPN or Fox…because to be honest, a Thursday night showing on the CBS Sports Network with an 11pm ET (5pm HT) kickoff isn’t gonna draw many viewers.

Mountain West Commissioner Craig Thompson said today the league has been in talks with 3-5 teams. San Diego State — which originally planned to join the Big East in a package deal with Boise — is one of them. A league source says schools from Texas have recently shown interest in becoming members. UTEP, SMU, Houston and possibly Texas-San Antonio are schools to watch.

  79. HawaiiMongoose December 31, 2012 12:12 pm

I think Boise State’s decision is great news for UH football. No more worries about UH being left on the outside looking in. Keeping Boise State stabilizes the MWC and should ensure the Warriors will be playing in a relevant, competitive FBS conference for the foreseeable future.

I really like the way the TV revenue issue was handled. Boise State wanted to keep the money from all of its home football games. That was a non-starter; no conference allows that. But instead, it was agreed that broadcast rights for Boise State home games will be kept separate from the existing MWC TV deal with CBS, and instead will be auctioned off to the highest bidder. The proceeds will not go to Boise State, but rather to the MWC, which will distribute them to all MWC members along with other conference TV revenue. It’s a win-win deal that maximizes the payoff for everybody.

It appears the only real concessions made to Boise State were (1) setting up special additional payouts based on national TV appearances, which can benefit any school that performs well on the field; and (2) the MWC agreeing to help pay Boise State’s exit penalty from the Big East, which is only a one-time expense.

All in all, a good outcome for the MWC and UH. Happy New Year!

  80. kruzen December 31, 2012 12:13 pm

SDSU may not make it back to the MWC if any of the following three gets invited:

SMU, Houston, BYU, UTEP, UTSA, Tulsa, etc.

  83. Bowwar December 31, 2012 12:21 pm

UH may want to reconsider trying to get ALL teams playing in the MWC to avoid being “left off” should there be further realignment. I know it will “cost us”, but it will be worse if we end up with just membership in the Big West.

  84. al December 31, 2012 12:21 pm

i am sure sdsu will announce its return.

then the mwc will be a 12 team football conference.

    two divisions?

    championship game?

having smu brings the dallas market.

including utep or houston would provide a texas travel partner.

or the next texas two step.

  85. PurpleMaple December 31, 2012 12:22 pm

USC not only lost to Georgia Tech. They only generated 208 yards of offense. I love it.

  88. Derek December 31, 2012 12:24 pm

I’m sure San Diego St. will come back to the MWC to make it a 12 team conference. Actually, it could be a baker’s dozen of 13 teams because Hawaii only plays football in the MWC. MWC is hoping BYU comes back to the fold. It makes too much sense.

  99. A-House December 31, 2012 1:00 pm

With the change in the MWC, I hope UH does not get the “short-end” of having to pay travel $$$ to “new teams” including BSU and SDSU – earlier someone posted that Commish Thompson said “new” teams will not receive any travel subsidies from UH – hope this is true.

They already gave up all OC 16 TV $$ rights to the MWC – why did the President’s allow BSU to keep their TV rights or did I read wrong?

  100. koakane December 31, 2012 1:00 pm

  105. kapakahi December 31, 2012 1:21 pm

    #87 & #102,

Jeezy’s talking about TE Brandon Vandenburg (College of The Desert, Palm Desert, CA.)…..

    http://www.hudl.com/athlete/92307/#highlights/19200374

Hopefully UH also taking a look at Brandon’s teammate DL Lynden Tulimasealii…..cousin of Warrior commit DT Kennedy Tulimasealii.

  106. kapakahi December 31, 2012 1:34 pm

    #105,

Vandenburg top rated JC TE prospect by ESPN…..ranked No. 10 overall of top 100 JC prospects…..while Lyndon Tulimasealii ranked No. 96 of top 100 JC prospects.

  107. HawaiiMongoose December 31, 2012 1:34 pm

Former UH Athlete, re #91, that’s true but then BSU sticking around also will keep national media attention on the MWC and over the long run that should help UH recruiting.

  108. Shoko December 31, 2012 1:35 pm

Dropped in to wish everyone a safe and happy 2013 New Year.

Sort of glad “Boise State not going” to the Big East. My hate for them has been rejuvenated.

  109. san jose warrior December 31, 2012 2:03 pm

Be safe and have a happy new year. First half of the UH athletic season pau, looking forward to the second half, I’mua Warriors and Wahine. Aloha and out

  111. laulau head December 31, 2012 2:08 pm

Former Warrior DT Vaughn Meatoga has been signed to the Seahawks’ practice squad…

Lucky him, now he gets to go to the Superbowl! Cheee…GO HAWKS!

  112. Committed Road Warrior December 31, 2012 2:10 pm

    A-House #99:

Boise doesn’t get to keep their TV rights…that would be unheard of even in the SEC.

Instead, the MWC can choose to sell off some (or all) of Boise’s home football rights to other networks. Any monies gained from that would be rolled into the funds from the aggregate MWC TV contract and disbursed to all MWC members.

  113. 99club December 31, 2012 2:23 pm

Hope everyone has a safe and happy new year! Looking forward to next season and road trips to LV, NM, and Annapolis.

How much did Boise get from the BCS games? Did the Big East exit fee just wipe out those profits?

  114. Bryson December 31, 2012 2:33 pm

We do have a relationship with COD Brent Rausch came from there I believe so it might not be that far of a stretch for us to land Vandenburg….

  115. kifi December 31, 2012 2:39 pm

#105 – Doesn’t Brandon Vandenburg already have all of his trips set-up and planned already?

Scout.com says that he visited UConn in November, and plans to visit Arizona State, Vandy, Tennessee, and Nebraska in 2013. Would be great if he cancelled one of those trips and came to Hawaii instead.

  116. Kevin December 31, 2012 2:49 pm

    @FerdLewis

Hawaii LIKELY to HAVE to pay travel subsidies for BSU and ANY NEW MWC football members.

    HAPPY NEW YEAR!

  117. DoubleB December 31, 2012 3:02 pm

    @116 that’s a bummer… Pay to play huh.

  118. nanakuli December 31, 2012 3:04 pm

  120. DoubleB December 31, 2012 3:06 pm

    See you all in 2013!

  122. Kevin December 31, 2012 3:08 pm

The Big West Commissioner made it clear months and months ago that UH’s BWC programs will NOT have to pay travel subsidies should they expand. Yes, no one is looking to jump to the BWC and nor are they openly looking to add, but at that time I believe it was BSU looking to go to the BWC and the BWC commish put his foot down and said UH ain’t paying for any new members.

I like the BWC commissioner. 😎

  123. G (China) December 31, 2012 3:16 pm

Stay safe, do not drink and drive!

  128. HawaiiMongoose December 31, 2012 3:37 pm

Paying travel subsidies to new MWC members is not what UH would prefer, but it won’t actually increase UH’s costs since there will still be only four MWC teams visiting each year. Also, if the conference continues to expand, UH’s costs should go down a bit since fewer games will be with opponents visiting from east of the Rockies, to whom UH pays $175,000 instead of $150,000.

  129. wafan December 31, 2012 3:39 pm

All this paying travel subsidies stinks. It hurts the program. What Hawaii not a part of the United States? Sorry no freeway to get here. Wish some akamai attorney would look into this matter. It’s discriminatory. Sorry I just feel that way.

  132. azwarrior22 December 31, 2012 3:54 pm

  135. PurpleMaple December 31, 2012 4:04 pm

With Chis Ault’s retirement and Rolo going to Temple, who is going to give Boise St a run for the conference championship? Fresno did poorly against SMU. Doesn’t look like they will. Well, maybe Utah St, but it will look like Snow White and the 10 dwarves all over again. Boise will look for a move for sure. It just won’t be the Big East.

  136. Committed Road Warrior December 31, 2012 4:05 pm

    Happy New Year Fellow Tsai-kos,

So much happened this year… Same good some bad. But whether positive or negative, everyone had a voice and could add their two cents. May all of your hopes and dreams come true in 2013. May we all have good health and not lose any members of our growing community.

Welcome back to the MWC Boise St. I’m looking for the opportunity to see you again at Aloha Stadium. Just a matter of time before we beat your butts regularly

  152. Chicken Grease December 31, 2012 4:46 pm

2012 is “the year of the dragon.” As an individual of Chinese ancestry, a Grease wonders why it didn’t seem that the revered dragon of the Chinese horoscope wasn’t on his side, no?

Or maybe the dragon WAS on his side . . . in order to give him great advantage and great luck down the road. Hard to tame a dragon. Is this the point?

There was a TV ad long ago — “ancient Chinese secret”? A Grease wonders . . .

  153. mo808 December 31, 2012 4:47 pm

    Hui? Wea e’vrybody went?

  155. Chicken Grease December 31, 2012 4:49 pm

Heh. Should’ve read, “As an individual of Chinese ancestry, Coach Norm Chow . . .” [emphasis mine.] and the rest of # 152 is correct.

  156. mo808 December 31, 2012 4:49 pm

Cool! A Grease is of Chinese ancestry!

  159. Chicken Grease December 31, 2012 4:54 pm

Sorry, sorry, sorry, mo808, heh, please read # 153, so sorry for that leave-out of Coach Chow’s name. A Grease DOES seem to get along quite easily w/Chinese folk, somehow, not being Chinese himself[!] Should get a blood tranfusion from Chinese, though; would that count?

Hai, hai, kung hee fat choy (which will be coming soon enough 😉 .

On another note, SA finally printed my letter suggesting renaming the airport to honor Daniel Inouye. This is after they posted a similar letter days early. Oh well, best to keep the idea alive. Also did as al suggested and emailed the Governor’s Office. Not expecting much support from him.

  198. expat December 31, 2012 8:01 pm

2013 will be an interesting year in the MWC with all the new coaches. Crazy that little more than a year from not being retained at UH Aranda will be DC at Wisconsin. McMackin said that he was a rising star — seems that he was correct. I know that’s old news…

Sadly we have no leverage with the MWC. We have no where else to go and they know it.

Happy New Year to everyone & hope to see some of you out in Oregon in the fall.

Am Boise State hater. Having said that am estastic that BS is remaining in MWC and keeping league relevant on the national stage. Wasn’t it just a few weeks ago that many of us were in agnst fearing breakup or instability of MWC with news of Big East further raiding of MWC, and Colorado St/Wyoming wanting to seceed and form new league. BS remaining is good for long term health of the league, and for Warrior football.

Signs point toward Mike Edwards applying to the draft, according to Stephen’s story. Hate to see him go, but he’s achieved a lot and carried himself well in his two seasons in Hawaii. Guess we’ll find out for certain in a few hours.

  244. Darren January 1, 2013 2:38 am

    Happy New Year!!

Travel subsidies are just a necessary evil for us to belong. History shows that one of the primary reasons we were left out of the original MWC was because President Mortimer decided to eliminate our previous WAC travel subsidies. As much as it sucks, it’d behoove us to not make that same mistake again. Mr. Mongoose makes a great point in that we’ll always be paying for 4 trips a year, regardless of the number of teams in the conference.

  245. maddog50 January 1, 2013 3:31 am

  257. oldtimer808 January 1, 2013 5:40 am

Good morning it was a quiet entrance into the New Year. Doggone fireworks ban!!! I miss those noisy years. May our men’s basketball team be blessed with a winning season and that Vander either goes up to the basket for a shot after receiving a pass or throw it back out to an open man and move into another open spot to receive a reentry pass and not hold on to the ball and be swarmed on a double team.

  258. Natisha Norsworthy January 1, 2013 5:40 am

Hello there! I know this is kind of off topic but I was wondering if you knew where I could get a captcha plugin for my comment form? I’m using the same blog platform as yours and I’m having problems finding one? Thanks a lot!

WNY, one of several alarms never sleeps in! 🙂

  261. mo808 January 1, 2013 5:53 am

So! How, noisy was it last night where you live Folks?

  262. mo808 January 1, 2013 5:54 am

It was a ruckus in Kailua last night!

  263. mo808 January 1, 2013 5:56 am

My pit and retriever were best friends united in fear and trembling from all the explosions! So much so they slept in the same crate!

  264. gobows January 1, 2013 6:12 am

#245 monte kiffin was probably fired by son lane and is seeking job opportunities in the nfl.

with 7 teams looking for a new head coach, he surely will land somewhere in the league.

  265. Chicken Grease January 1, 2013 6:34 am

That fireworks ban must be working, mo808. Much less explosions (i.e., none every few minutes) than in past years. Stockpilers’ inventory going DOWN as years go by. Up to the gov’ment make sure these things don’t get through, no?

Yeah. Relatively way less quiet. Good. Think that incident where that little girl’s hands were damaged by those idiots’ pipe bomb — think was Kalihi side — helped to silently (pun intended) galvanize the effort.

Heh, a Grease knows some who are AGAINST fireworks ban, but, FOR gun control. A Grease is one the other sensible side 😉 . Here we go . . . “politics” begin in 2013 . . . 🙂

  266. PONO January 1, 2013 7:03 am

Good Luck to Mike Edwards. Thanks for reppin the 808 for two years.

  267. Da Punchbowl Kid January 1, 2013 7:24 am

    *yawn* zzzzzzzzzzzzz…

  268. Diogenes Sinope January 1, 2013 7:42 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

And a bright Hawaiian day – either that or the windows need cleaning and we have also a touch of vog.

It was comparatively quiet in the Kapiolani district with sightings of some illegal fireworks. From our rooftop, we got to see (partially) the midnight display on the beach with the Harbor display in the far distance.

Yep, the previous years of noise and smoke are disappearing as the years go by – which may be for the good.

Happy New Year one and all!

  269. papajoe2 January 1, 2013 7:58 am

Not too much noise in Mililani compared to previous years but there were still some “bombs” that rattled our windows.

  270. Bleed Green and White January 1, 2013 8:02 am

    Damn I hate fireworks!

Irritating as heck, wake up this morning and see some of the neighbors have no class again, the street’s a mess. My God, at least clean your crap up!

Hey HPD, really, how many arrests for illegal firewirks or “no permits” were made……?

    What a joke!

  271. kapakahi January 1, 2013 8:03 am

    Aloha Mikey!

  272. wafan January 1, 2013 8:13 am

    Good first morning of 2013!

This is going to be a super year.

  273. kev-1 January 1, 2013 8:25 am

    Happy New Year everyone!

    #266 PONO . . . did I miss something?

  274. jm2375 January 1, 2013 8:26 am

    Happy New Year!

Relatively quiet in my part of Kailua last night.

Everyone else in the house is still sleeping, even the blog mascot.

  275. kev-1 January 1, 2013 8:30 am

Nevermind. Maybe I should read the paper before I comment. Anyway, I will save my opinion on Edwards pending decision for fear of coming across negative. Good luck to him whatever he chooses.

  276. mo808 January 1, 2013 8:36 am

Nevah read papah yet so will go do so now 🙁
