hey Cindy, wasn’t the Volleyball special suppose to come out today?

  2. jimmy the lock August 26, 2015 10:51 am

Ashley, Cindy mentioned that it may come out in Friday’s edition. Blame Kilo.

  3. Ashley August 26, 2015 11:47 am

    ok thanks Jimmy.

  4. Cindy Luis August 26, 2015 11:50 am

thanks for getting to that for me Jimmy. not really Kilo as much as the press was having problems. think there’s a new computer system involved.

BTW, I’d like to ask that posts not start with HEY. just a pet peeve. Thanks.

I am hoping that a lot of fans will come to the Arena on Friday and show the new players why it was the right decision to come to the UH. A sold out house would be great but I would be satisfied with 8000+. See you all on Friday.

    Aloha Cindy,

Has anyone seen any of the middles getting involved with the slide play? Adolpho was really nailing it at the end of last season. A video of Mags has her with that snap wrist movement that really connects with the ball! :o)

  8. Cindy Luis August 26, 2015 3:47 pm

    8. have mentioned several times that Maglio and Mitchem run the slides. Had a video of them doing step-ou drills, even caught Magill doing a couple, which she isn’t comfortable with, but don’t think it ever got posted. Will have to go look for it

I think Wichita and Oregon matches will be tough competition. They have some tall players on their squads like 6’5. Just about 48 hrs to go.
To bad weather not cooperating for the visitors.

  10. mauna August 26, 2015 4:58 pm

Hawaii pretty much matches up with Wichita St and Oregon St.
Shockers start- Hitters Raudsepp 6’2, Floyd 6′, Whitledge 5’9, Middles Reilly 6′, Lehman 6’3 and Setter Hiebert 6′.
Beavers start- Hitters Marshall 6’1, Driscoll 6’5, Toner 6’1, Middles Seumalo 6’1, Clarke 6’5 and Setter Backlund 5’10.

  11. Cindy Luis August 26, 2015 6:04 pm

Very spirited practice today, they tried a few different people hitting out of the middle ,including Castillo and Huff apparently ‘just to see.’ it did make observers go “Himmmm.”
And Magill actually did a slide or two.

As for Manu-Olevao … as for now she is expected to play Sunday. Could change but that is the latest.

Saw a graphic in today’s Wall St. Journal that shows the top ten college football programs by revenue. Texas tops the list with $112.5m. Out of curiosity, I looked up UH’s figure on a U.S. Dept. of Education site named “The Equity in Athletics Data Analysis Cutting Tool”. UH’s football revenue was $9.8m in 2013-14. A couple of thoughts came to mind:

    1. Amazing that Na Wahine can still compete in volleyball despite such disparate football revenue figures and the resulting trickle-down to non-rev sports.

    2. The Dept. of Education site should be renamed “The Inequity in Athletics…”

Who knows what the future holds for Na Wahine volleyball competitiveness, so let’s enjoy this team and hope for a strong run into the post-season.

  13. darkfire August 26, 2015 7:09 pm

    Aloha Cindy,

Insofar as the libero is concerned, after Kahakai, who would be 2nd then third backup? Or are we not that deep in this position?

    Mahalo

  14. po'okela August 26, 2015 7:24 pm

has mitchem been cleared to play or still just practice?

  15. AlexM August 26, 2015 7:27 pm

Has Mitchem said where she feels she’s strongest, MH or OH? Also, has Pestolesi offered his opinion on the matter?

Trying not to get my expectations too high. This team is still quite young and untested.

  16. mauna August 26, 2015 8:11 pm

This team is actually not young and are tested. Returning starters are Higgins, Olevao, Magill, Taylor and Greeley. Only the M2 and L starters are new, however they, Maglio and Kahakai had plenty of playing time last year.

  17. Mauian5 August 27, 2015 6:53 am

On Kanoa Leahey show here on Maui, Shoji said Mitchem is not cleared to play.
Still waiting on paperwork to clear her.

  18. Cindy Luis August 27, 2015 7:19 am

sorry late in getting back. power outages at home knocked out the internet. That was some crazy weather Wednesday. surprised the power stayed on in the arena. Rich Sheriff did walk in a couple of times to make sure there weren’t leaks and to test the new graphics on the scoreboard. That thunder was really loud.

    13. agree about it being inequitable. didn’t see that analysis but would ask. Are revenue figures showing revenues as gross or net? Either way, football spends the most money at every school.
Have found that the UH athletic department to be pretty fiscally responsible (minus the Stevie Wonder thing). If they weren’t handcuffed by the travel subsidies it would be another story in terms of running a deficit.

That said, regarding the Wahine, where the disparity comes is in is when prospects compare facilities, weight rooms, overall athletic complex, food service, locker rooms. For now, the quality of the Wahine program is what attracts really good players.
IMO, there is a difference in the thinking of male and female athletes overall when it comes to a degree. From what I’ve seen, there seems to be more value placed on graduating from a ‘name’ university than one not quite as highly regarded academically by gender. I.E. Hawaii vs. Stanford. Hawaii is well-respected in academic circles for a number of its degree program but, again, IMO the national perception is not that If you were applying for a job which school do you want on your resume?

  19. Cindy Luis August 27, 2015 7:31 am

    14. Shoji said he hasn’t yet been able to separate the three. They all bring something different and he’s looking for someone who can come in, serve well and pass. pretty much that is what I wrote in the preview that comes out Friday.

    15. Mitchem has not been cleared to play. And may not be until Friday afternoon. question of some of the paperwork not being received yet, no fault of Mitchem. Not to dis educational institutions but get the feeling the non-Hawaii schools Mitchem has attended don’t have the same sense of urgency or the semester hasn’t started in those places.

    16. Pestolesi played Mitchem at middle but that’s not where she was always hitting. She can run the slide. She can hit left-back, middle-back, right-back. He saw her as a middle at UH but was confident she could adjust to OH if that’s what the Wahine needed.

There is no question that she is athletic and talented. pretty good at read block from what I’ve seen but she has said that she’s still getting used to the speed of the game and the intensity of practices and workouts.
She definitely gives Hawaii some options. it’s just a matter of her adjusting to this level and, of course, when she is cleared.
Very pleasant young woman. has gone out of her way to say hello to me when I’m at the press table during and after practice. Might be TMI but we both like the same fragrance and she noticed I was wearing it.

  20. Maverick August 27, 2015 7:40 am

    18. Cindy, the figures I quoted are gross football revenues, but the site provides the details across all sports by gender, gross and net. I recall Texas making a profit of $15m and UH taking a $2.6m loss (total athletic program). I was shocked that Texas’ football revenue was more than one order of magnitude greater than UH’s, which leads to the superior facilities you mentioned. Really is amazing the quality of the UH Program is still very high where other non-power 5 schools have fallen, like in the WCC.

Also, the explosion of volleyball nationally over the past 15-20 years makes it easier for schools to retain local talent and harder for UH to get someone like a Kim Willoughby from Louisiana. Big football money has made that possible for schools in the SEC and ACC, to give two examples.

  21. Cindy Luis August 27, 2015 7:47 am

16-17. Both of you correct. They are not young in terms of the returning starters but still young in terms of playing together and being tested together as a unit.
Higgins begins her second year as the setter so the rest of the lineup only had one year with her.

MH Magill is a senior but this is her second year at UH.

MH Maglio was a reserve and the 3rd middle, usually came in late when the match was well in hand or for injured Magill that one time at Long Beach State.

OH Greeley and OH Kahakai both in their second years. Greeley probably the most experienced of the sophomores as a starter. Kahakai injured early, wore brace that limited her mobility. She seems 100 percent now.

OH Taylor missed all of preseason practice in 2014 and the first 7 matches. She estimates she maybe got up to 90 percent by the end of the season but she often wasn’t an option in the offense because they were trying to limit her swings.

As for Manu-Olevao, 2 1/2 years as a starter, the first when un-redshirting midway through freshman season because of Croson’s suspension. Been very inconsistent, has never hit above .200 in a season. That said, has stepped up at the ends of matches after hitting negative to start and played her way out of negative with the exception of the final against UW. This is her second year with Higgins (not counting Punahou when they were together) after two with Uiato. Also being asked to be a primary passer, something she is still learning to do and something she didn’t do in high school.

  22. Cindy Luis August 27, 2015 7:53 am

    20. thank you. I will take a look. might be something I can use in my class at UH. Don’t think I’ve mentioned that I’m teaching Reporting: sport journalism.

As for the exposing of girls volleyball, it is now the most popular high school sport in the country. F rom what I read, something like just under 500,000, think 2013-14 school year.

  23. Maverick August 27, 2015 7:58 am

    19. Regarding fragrances, totally TMI, but you might as well reveal what brand so that the online trolls can send you and Annie some gifts (just kidding, of course)

  24. Cindy Luis August 27, 2015 7:58 am

    18. yep been saying that all week and that likely might not happening until Friday afternoon.

sorry the numbers now may be a little off for responses.
just found your comment in Pending.

    24. didn’t mention it for that very same reason ‘-)
