Wednesday checkin

Team back in the arena for practice after spending Tuesday in Gym 1.
A lot of serve and pass.

Taylor again doing passing drills. Shoji said it was “awesome” to have her back. no word on how soon she’ll be cleared to play. I’m thinking not unit after next week’s tournament.

Ah Mow-Santos working with the setters on technique, wanting them to move more quickly to the ball, instead of doing what Shoji calls a crab walk.

Didn’t catch it on video but did get a few clips of Shoji and Longo comparing technique with Ah Mow-Santos hitting at them. will try to post later.

Great to hear Nikki is back practicing again! Slowly but surely! Woo hoo!!!!

    Hi Cindy,

I hope you post that video clip of Ah-Mow. She can SLAM the ball. I remember her playing right side hitter subbing in for Brandi Brooks in the Neal Blaisdell Arena against UCLA. She had hops like Therese Crawford and had a quick arm swing.

Thank you for all your blog posts and what you write on the StarAdvertiser.

saw this article on Shoji from Volleyball Magazine: http://volleyballmag.com/articles/43450-hawaii-s-dave-shoji-hits-the-big-4-0

cindy — hopefully it’s ok to post articles from other publications. if not, then please feel free to delete this.

i also posted the article on VTalk.

Watching US men in world championships now on the BeIN sports channel. Boy do I miss Clay Stanley, and prefer Kawika Shoji to be setting over Micah Christenson.

  6. Brandon September 4, 2014 8:37 am

One of hawaii recruits ranked at 75. I’m guessing Castillo cause of her injury. Anyone who subscribes to prep can confirm this?

  7. Pot-of-Gold September 4, 2014 9:11 am

    6. Granato is ranked 75th, suggesting that she is a ‘typical University of Hawaii outside hitter recruit’.

  8. mei mei September 4, 2014 9:23 am

4 thanks for the link… very good article!

  9. rayson September 4, 2014 9:25 am

6: My guess is that’s Granato. Castillo is going to be ranked higher.

  10. Brandon September 4, 2014 9:29 am

I was thinking it wasn’t her because she was a third team pre season USA volleyball all American. But this is just another recruit shoji can make into an AA

  11. haleiwacrossfitter September 4, 2014 9:34 am

Just join the site…it’s cheap and filled with info that you would want to know.

  12. Cubicle1126 September 4, 2014 9:37 am

pot-of-gold — what is the ‘typical university of hawaii outside hitter recruit’?

  13. haleiwacrossfitter September 4, 2014 9:39 am

John calls her a consistent passer and dynamic defender and could play libero but is too powerful not to use upfront. Good 6 rotation player.

  14. Pot-of-Gold September 4, 2014 9:50 am

Cubicle1126, That was quote from the assessment of Granato. Basically they are suggesting that the “typical” Hawaii recruit is not the tallest, but has great vision and an accurate powerful hit.

Hope that helps, can’t really quote the piece off of Prep…

  15. Cindy Luis September 4, 2014 10:21 am

    4. thanks for the link. glad it made it up. Other times it would have gone into spam.
just how the filter is set.

    14. agree that the ‘typical Hawaii recruit’ isn’t the tallest but has all-around skills and high VB IQ. May be raw but potential of being developed into a very good player.

  16. po'okela September 4, 2014 10:54 am

it is granato and IMO she should be ranked in the 30-40 range.

she’s so explosive and has a variety of shots. can she play libero? highly doubt it. she’s a good defender but not a GREAT defender. I’d take kahakai over granato as libero but what I like most about her is her back row attack.

  17. po'okela September 4, 2014 10:54 am

    lost my post, oh wells

  18. Cubicle1126 September 4, 2014 11:00 am

    pot-of-gold — gotcha! thanks!

  19. islandman September 4, 2014 11:17 am

Wahine VB season ticket sales highest in 6 years, per Ben on twitter. Is it the new players or is it due to Dave’s 40th year ?

  20. Cindy Luis September 4, 2014 12:07 pm

discussed earlier that the feeling a lot about Shoji’s 40th.
Odd that the tweet would go up now. had a post about it two weeks ago, that it was nearly 4,000, which was the most since 2008.

  21. warriorfan September 4, 2014 12:58 pm

I think Granato can be Hawaii’s version of Macey Gardner in a few years, but much much better in the back row.

  22. warriorfan September 4, 2014 1:04 pm

She’s got a ton of power, just like Greeley and Taylor before her, Tawa has got her rated way too low.

  23. Cindy Luis September 4, 2014 1:09 pm

As many have opined previously, Castillo, Granato and Mitchem comprise an outstanding recruiting class

  24. AdmrVT September 4, 2014 1:36 pm

16 Granato and Castillo were both in the top 50 juniors. Something must have changed.

  25. cocobean September 4, 2014 1:54 pm

off topic. Does the spam filter have a no post list to block anyone on the list from posting? I ask because the person voted the most irritating poster of all time here and on the football blog has not been heard since the filters started up.

  26. Brandon September 4, 2014 2:09 pm

Cindy in your opinion, what are the chances that Mitchem is coming

  27. warriorfan September 4, 2014 2:15 pm

Doesn’t post 23 by Cindy, say it all?? Jeez

  28. warriorfan September 4, 2014 2:17 pm

    25. Sure hope so, it’s been nice on the blog without that person.

  29. Cindy Luis September 4, 2014 2:35 pm

    26. Guareenz

  30. Cindy Luis September 4, 2014 2:36 pm

    25. didn’t know there was a poll. but I believe so. I cannot block anyone.

  31. Brandon September 4, 2014 2:53 pm

Without a verbal everything is up in the air. And even with a verbal, she could always switch and any given time. It happened with the mens volleyball team with the boy who decided last minute to play for usc

  32. Brandon September 4, 2014 2:57 pm

and cindy i was addressing warriorfan with my last comment. Not you. Thanks for the heads up by mitchem. Excited for next year. She will FOR SURE be an All american by the time she leaves UH

  33. warriorfan September 4, 2014 3:13 pm

Women do not change their minds at last minute the way men do in athletics, just does not happen.
UH has been the only school recruiting her constantly since her sophomore year of HS, good job by Scott and Dave to stay persistent.

One thing I like from her last match, she led Irvine Valley in kills, blocks and digs, with a triple double, as a middle! Been a long time since UH had a middle that could play all the way around. If Maglio makes big strides in the middle, we might see Annie on the right.

  34. Brandon September 4, 2014 3:33 pm

Thanks for the heads up warrior. I thought it was common in both genders. I do know nebraska was recruiting her but Mitchem is such a great get for hawaii. For a middle to lead in digs, that’s amazing.

  35. 'ohanaInBellingham September 4, 2014 3:34 pm

    26. LOL!

  36. Brandon September 4, 2014 3:37 pm

UH will have such a strong bench next year. Usually you know who the starter a re and the backups are backups. But with Mitchem, Castillo granato, Nikki, Higgins, Greeley, manu olevao and even Maglio all potential starters, UH will be the deport Ives even them in a long time.

I’m most excited about Castillo. I’ve heard she’s one of the best players in so cal

  37. mauna September 4, 2014 3:44 pm

    36. You left out Olivia Magill who will be a senior incumbent MB.

  38. Brandon September 4, 2014 3:48 pm

My apologies. Forgot about her. Even more so our bench will be LOADED with talent: not to mention I forgot kahakai, Gianna and Kendra.

  39. mauna September 4, 2014 4:20 pm

For next season I count 7 probable starters, Magill, Mitchem, Taylor, Olevao, Greeley, Higgins, Kahakai. New comers Castillo, Granato and hold overs Koelisch, Long, Passi, Maglio, Guinasso, Anderson, Ponce and Huff will have to work to unseat them.

  40. Cindy Luis September 4, 2014 5:04 pm

Guinasso may be on sand scholarship next year so this would mean the last of her indoor career.

  41. Brandon September 4, 2014 5:06 pm

I thought the rule was two years. So couldn’t she redshirt, then miss one year so she’ll be back by her junior year? Or did I misunderstand the rule

  42. Cindy Luis September 4, 2014 5:09 pm

    33. of course women change their minds, just as men do. but think more is made of the men changing schools, especially in sports like football and basketball.
But Hawaii has nurtured their relationship with her and had faith from the beginning that she would stay on track school-wise.
I know other schools had doubts.

  43. Cindy Luis September 4, 2014 5:13 pm

Not that clear on the rule either. thought that she was walking on to sand this school year and then would be on sand scholarship 2015-16. so no indoor in 2015

  44. Cubicle1126 September 4, 2014 5:52 pm

oregon and st. john’s are tied one game apiece.

  45. Cindy Luis September 4, 2014 5:53 pm

    yes, see new thread

  46. 505jeans September 4, 2014 6:39 pm

Where do you all get your info on these prep players?

  47. Warrior World September 4, 2014 7:01 pm

FYI, new video up on the site about UH freshmen Savanah Kahakai and Kalei Greeley: http://hawaiiwarriorworld.com/rainbow-wahine-volleyball/video-wahine-volleyball-freshmen/

  48. tossup September 5, 2014 1:58 am

    47. that video has no sound of speech. star advertiser screwed up again!
