Wednesday check in

Appreciate all the links to other stories on the previous thread.
Probably easiest if you got back to Tuesday thread to use the links.

The one question asked previously was Mitchem and possible medical hardship request.

Not applicable because she has played in too many matches this year.

Not one to complain about site design. So this is the 1st.

Dear Star-Advertiser I.T. and/or management, please ensure navigational usability, simplicity & coherence are not subordinate to “appearance” in future redesigns. Mobile-friendly only makes sense if subscribers can readily access content without guessing where it is or how to get there. Example: the Volleyshots blog must rank among SA’s most popular. Yet, navigational issues remain where VB content is not unified or in sync due to multiple access methods which do not steer users to Ms. Luis’s latest blog content. So also please, if you can, raise the quality of site navigation to the quality of site content. Good for brand, good for ads & advertisers.

    5. please email managing editor Frank bridgewater at fbridgewater@staradvertiser.com

Not liking the new redesign either.

Volleyshots is No. 2 in popularity, behind Stephen Tsai’s.
Volleyshots als was named recently as one of the top blogs in Hawaii and is being put on some international list.

6, thanks for the info. I’ve already provided feedback by phone but could be more specific in an e-mail. Meantime, wishing you safe travels, as well.

  9. Mark December 2, 2015 5:19 pm

Cindy, is mitchem in the trip?
    Thanks!

  10. islandman December 2, 2015 5:39 pm

9… Yes both Annie and Burns went on the trip, per Cindy’s article today.

  11. H-Man December 2, 2015 6:28 pm

Yup, agree. The new SA Sports design is junk. The previous layout was much better.

  12. Cindy Luis December 2, 2015 7:57 pm

    9. yes both Mitchem and Burns.
    11. Don’t like it either. please let our management know on the feedback link.

BTW, former Wahine Keani Passi was named AVCA all-region today. She finished her career at Chaminade. No up for DII All-American honors.
Passi, who last week was named the Pacific West Conference Newcomer of the Year, had 489 kills with a 4.29 kills per set average, both program-records in the rally-scoring era as the Silverswords won 19 matches, the second-most in school history. She also ranked among the conference leaders in hitting percentage (.263) and service aces (0.28 per set) and tallied 15 double-doubles.

  14. Cindy Luis December 2, 2015 8:43 pm

Randomness. Sitting in the HAL lounge waiting for flight. Sistah Palkiko is sitting across from me with husband Mike Beazley. Didn’t realize that Mike played with Higgins’ dad at UH.

  15. haleiwacrossfitter December 2, 2015 9:03 pm

There is a blogger that tweeted if it was too late to get Megan Rice to changer her commitment. Ummm…yes, too late. But I would not prefer her over Sibley.

Rice is jut an offensive weapon, and even then she can be stopped.

Sibley is a better all around player, especially in the back row. She is a better digger and passer.

The blogger did not mention a comparison to Sibley, just thought if it would be too late to changer her mind…probably out of sarcasm.

But I’m putting it out there because if Rice decided to come to UH, I think we would be missing out on a possible better version of Hartong. And only time will tell. But Sibley is a solid recruit and I would not choose Rice over her. We scored with Sibley.

We also scored with Norene, BUT really, really, really scored with Emma Smith. She is going to be the best libero in the country when her career is over at UH. Norene even said in a previous interview that because Mira Costa and Redondo faced so many times, she is really looking forward to having Smith on her side of the net this time.

  16. Ron December 2, 2015 9:36 pm

Three great recruits, but I think Norene can takes us to the “promised land”. I also think that despite the disadvantage of being on the road and playing in a hostile environment, that we will prevail this weekend. We will see if I have good judgement or just wishful thinking. I really hope that I am right!

  17. Maverick December 2, 2015 9:52 pm

    15. Not to be a smart aleck, but if Emma Smith is as good as you say she is going to be, how is it that she is a walk on? Wouldn’t someone have seen her potential as the best libero in 4 years and given her a scholarship? Not like she is from a no-name high school either.

    16. Depends on who the OHs and MBs are. Don’t think she will be starting next year, and we lose our All-American after that. Not sure who the next terminator is after her. Also, we had an incredible setter in Kamana’o and no national championships during her tenure. Takes a lot of talent at multiple positions these days.

Yeah, I know I sound negative, but I think the euphoria of the upcoming tournament is inflating some opinions. I just want to see UH take apart TCU and TAMU/CorpChristi this weekend and live somewhat in the present for a bit.

  18. Kryon December 2, 2015 9:58 pm

That’s too bad for Annie, I really think she could have grown into a phenomenal force if the injury didn’t occur. Seems like she got the short end with that rule. Maybe the ncaa should change n go by minutes played. If the minutes played added up to 10 games then I could c not being eligible. I think if we added annies minutes played, she probably would have only played a total of 4 or 5 gms. Seems like she will b penalized twice. Cant play cuz injury n Lose a yr of Eligibility. Sad.

5 & 6. Like you, I do not like the new style of the newspaper either and not only did I post feedback, I also asked for an answer to my question as to where we can find news archives. They are not available any more. Anyone else knows how to find them? Please inform.

  20. Row13 December 3, 2015 5:32 am

To get to the Archives, click on the gray box with 3 horizontal bars at the top left of the page.

  21. Cindy Luis December 3, 2015 5:43 am

just because I’m very tired, not going to go by number
Thank your Row13. they even had to send out a staff email to help us find the archives.

Smith is very good but they have no scholarship. Never knew Rice was a possibility. again, no scholarship

My u understanding is Smith is an invited walk-on, plans to play both indoor and beach. She also might have academic scholarships and/or financial aid.
Might be the case that she redshirts then comes in a freshman Kahakai’s senior year.

will be interesting next year with 3 setters on scholarship. Don’t know what he’s going to do.

Just wanted to know I it was legal for the 12th Man Foundation to pay for all student admission to the Texas A&M matches? If there are student athletes I the crowd, isn’t that illegal? Even if it’s $3 I thought a student athlete can’t take money from a booster, which it seems the 12th Man Foundation is.

  23. Cindy Luis December 3, 2015 5:48 am

    19. as for minutes played, volleyball is not like basketball where they keep track of minutes . The stat used is matches played.
besides, the time of matches vary as do the times of sets. consider that when Anderson is in to serve and goes on an extended run, that takes away minutes from the libero.

  24. menehune December 3, 2015 5:52 am

I have a daughter who lives and work in Des Moines, Iowa and she has already inquired on tickets for the Hawaii-Minnesota Regional game to be played there. Too soon?..nope, not if, but when. As an aside, she was a setter and all conference player for El Camino HS. LET’S GO BOWS.
