The University of Hawai‘i men’s volleyball team will open the 2014 season at No. 13 in the AVCA Division I-II Preseason Poll.

The Rainbow Warriors finished last season at No. 13 after advancing to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament quarterfinals, their third postseason appearance under head coach Charlie Wade.

Hawai‘i returns five starters and 10 lettermen off of that squad including its top two hitters – Brook Sedore and Sinisa Zarkovic, top three middle blockers – Taylor Averill, Davis Holt, and Nick West, and starting setter – Joby Ramos.

Defending NCAA champion UC Irvine grabbed the top spot with nine first place votes followed by UCLA (3), national runner-up BYU (4), Long Beach State (1), and Stanford (1). Rounding out the Top 10 were Pepperdine, Loyola-Chicago, UC Santa Barbara, Penn State, and Lewis.

UH opens the season with a pair of exhibition matches against Canada’s Thompson Rivers University, Jan. 2 & 4, before hosting the 20th Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Invitational, Jan. 9-11, which includes UCLA, Penn State, No. 12 Ohio State, along with host UH.

way to low, I think they will be top 5 before seasons end, if Sedore and Averill keep playing at a high level like they were at the end of last season and hopefully Siki improves and Mol is the real deal.

UH can absolutely not lose to Ohio State and PSU this year.

  3. Alohilani December 11, 2013 6:11 pm

Should there be any concerns that UH lost all their games except to Grand Canyon at the USC tourney? Possibly all the players weren’t there?

  4. Cindy Luis December 11, 2013 6:15 pm

wouldn’t be concerned. Ramos was injured, they were down to the freshman setter. They went from fielding 2 teams to 1. USC had to rearrange its tourney schedule accordingly.
They also didn’t take Pono Fey since they’re thinking of redshirting him. Him playing preseason would have burned that redshirt. Sounds like Wade might change his mind about the RS year and Fey might be in the mix in January.

Charlie Wade was on the Bobby Curran show this morning talking about starters and newcomers. Olsen and Zarkovic left side, Brook Sedore right side, Kanetake libero, Ramos setter, Holt, Averill and West in a battle for two middle spots. Talked about how Kupono Fey will probably not redshirt and will be competing for playing time in the left side rotation.

Cindy, just wondering if you mentioned that Zarkovic’s Dad is now an assistant coach for the men. You may have, just was not following you blog to much.

Cindy, thanks for allowing me back in. Wahine season is over so I will be nice again. Just kick me out again, come August. Thank you.

    5. No mention at all about the freshmen Mol?? and Olsen starting, is that serious?? Ugh Charlie.

  9. vbfan December 11, 2013 6:51 pm

I think this is the last year of Charlie’s contract unless he got an extension that I haven’t heard about.

So.. he probably has to at least make the MPSF playoffs again earn that extension.

  10. Cindy Luis December 11, 2013 6:55 pm

    6. had it 5 weeks ago. UH just got around to announcing it today

  11. hawaiivbfan December 11, 2013 7:47 pm

    8. He mentioned Mol but I don’t recall what he said. I’m assuming he’s first off the bench at Opposite behind Sedore.

  12. Warriorfan December 11, 2013 8:04 pm

Makes no sense to me, no offense him but Olsen has been abysmal hitting wise. Sedore proved against BYU he can be very effective on the left, charlie needs to play the talented freshmen on the right.

  13. Ron December 11, 2013 8:57 pm

Olsen also played well in that last game with BYU. He made the winning kill that was taken away by a bogus call.

  14. Warriorfan December 11, 2013 9:13 pm

Well Olsen better gain some consistency, and pass better ,Kanetake and ramos also better have improved, and how is Averill not a penciled in starter??

  15. Borislav December 11, 2013 9:39 pm

Is there anyway to hear the replay of Charlie Wade’s radio interview this morning?

  16. Cindy Luis December 11, 2013 10:15 pm

    call the radio station 296-1420
Don’t believe they archive their shows on their website tho

  17. Hot December 11, 2013 10:52 pm

Has Phelps graduated? I thought he was a junior last season. Wonder if Wade will still suit up 2 liberos.

  18. Warriorfan December 11, 2013 10:57 pm

Phelps is not on the roster anymore which is unfortunate because I think he’s better than Kanetake.

  19. hawaiivbfan December 11, 2013 11:04 pm

Wade said Kanetake will be the full time libero this year. He also mentioned Johann Timmer will again be the serving specialist. We all know what a difference he can make form behind the service line.

  20. Warriorfan December 12, 2013 12:15 am

I actually hope Charlie keeps starting Johann at middle blocker so that he can serve more than once per set.

  21. Hot December 12, 2013 2:35 am

    18. Yeah, I thought Phelps was good too.

  22. Cindy Luis December 12, 2013 8:38 am

One other thing Wade said was regarding the schedule
With the limit on matches (28) they don’t get to have many out of conference contests.
24 league, plus two in the Outrigger leaves them with 1 open date.
They have 2 matches with the Canadian team to open the season. 1 counts against the 28, the other will be considered an exhibition because you can do that with a foreign team.

Alohi Makes 1st team. There goes another one.

  24. Cindy Luis December 12, 2013 9:58 am

    23. she’s officially been gone for over a month when she signed her NLI.
Why hold on to players (and residual bitterness) who made THEIR decision to play elsewhere.
People tend to forget that recruiting is a two-way street. Just because UH wants you doesn’t mean you want them. So much discussion about UH not going after the ‘elite’ players. Completely false. They do and the players make another choice.

  25. mauna December 12, 2013 11:05 am

Yes the deal about Alohi was that BYU agreed to let her play both and UH not. I look at it this way, at least BYU is not in the BW (no bachi please).
